With the flu season approaching quickly, here’s something that you may not have considered. Mouthwash has been proven to inactivate infectious viruses like those that cause the common cold. Although it has yet to be proven, research and studies suggest that the same may apply to the Coronavirus. Common mouth rinses such as Listerine, Crest Pro-Health, Equate Antiseptic mouthwash as well as hydrogen peroxide rinses have shown to inactivate certain viruses by breaking the membrane of the virus, thus reducing the viral load. Researchers have found that the mouth rinses effectively inactivates 99.9% of viruses after swishing for 30 seconds or more. Of course, this is not a means to treat COVID-19, nor is it a substitute for wearing masks and social distancing, but it is a great supplement. Due to the effective short-term virucidal properties for the oral cavity and throat, they are also often given by dental and medical offices prior to treatments as well. Who knew your over-the-counter mouth rinses and hydrogen peroxide rinses could do so much more than give you fresh breath!
