Our fur babies can also be predisposed to periodontal disease and poor oral health. Fortunately, there are preventive measures that we can take to ensure they can keep their teeth to eat their favorite treats.

What Causes Periodontal Disease in Cats and Dogs? The same way periodontal disease occurs in humans! After eating, our pets begin to accumulate plaque in 24 hours. If no brushing is done, after 72 hours, the plaque will mineralize and harden into calculus. Plaque and calculus are packed with bacteria which causes inflammation of the gums which then leads to bone loss around the teeth.

How can I prevent Gum Disease in Cats and Dogs? • Brushing their teeth daily. Brushing needs to be consistent and thorough in order for it to be effective. Brushing should start once their adult teeth erupt, around 6 months of age for puppies and kittens. Use a pet toothbrush or a piece of gauze to clean their teeth. • Bring your pets into your local Veterinary office for periodic, preventative and professional dental cleanings. • Regular Check-Ups to screen for oral cancers. • Tooth-Friendly Treats Maintaining your cats and dogs oral and overall health is crucial to keeping them active and happy.
