s I write this article weeks before it is to be published, I do not know what our community will be going through or what changes to our life COVID-19 will bring in April. I do however know a few things right now. This is a huge wake up call for keeping our bodies as healthy as possible. It is no longer time to talk about getting healthy, but rather doing something about it. Make those life-style changes that will boost your immune system, so if you get a pathogenic insult, your body is at optimal health to combat the disease. Exercise, eat right, drink water, get a good night’s sleep, keep your hands clean, and spend more time with people that make you happy and healthy. Worry less about what you cannot control and start worrying about what you can control. This is not the first time we have been exposed to a potentially harmful invader and it will not be the last. All too often positive changes only happen when something drastic encourages those changes. The images of what happens when grocery stores run out of perishable items such as fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat, and dairy are all too scary. Maybe think about starting a small garden this spring, learn to can or share the bounty of your garden, start making connections with a local farmers to get fresh eggs, dairy or meat, grow herbs in your kitchen window, learn ways to preserve your perishable items so you always have extra food in the freezer or pantry. Not only will you boost your immune system by eating healthier, but the sense of pride is mentally rewarding. Gardening is great way of getting some exercise. Loading and unloading wheel-barrows or bags of dirt, pulling weeds, raking, watering, trimming, walking around the garden burns off extra energy and gets fresh, clean air into your lungs. For many digging in the dirt, watching plants grow, and enjoying the fruits of their labor is a way of relieving the everyday stress. Besides being good for your mental health, if you can find a family member or friend that likes to garden with you, gardening is a great way to spend quality time together. Find stability during these times by controlling what you can control. Make positive changes that will boost your immunity, find a way to be more independent and healthier by growing and storing your own foods, and spend quality time with those people that make you happy and healthy. Naturally, if you make changes to boost your immune system, your body will be better equipped to fight all sorts of pathogens attacking your body and your mouth too.
