Dental Emergencies and How To Deal With Them Written by Debi M. Huyssoon, D.M.D. at Sherwood Old Town Dental

W

ith all this warm weather, people are spending more time outdoors biking, running/walking, gardening, hiking, swimming, etc. As fun as all these activities are, there is an increased risk of having a traumatic dental injury while you are out being active in the sunshine.

Here are important things for you to know if you sustain an injury to your teeth.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth: • Find the tooth, handling it only by the crown of the tooth.

Do not touch the root of the tooth.

• Rinse with cold water or cold milk only if there is dirt or debris on the lost tooth.

• Attempt to reinsert the tooth as close as possible to its original position.

• If you are unable to re-implant the tooth, store it in cold milk or cold water.

• Call or visit your dentist immediately. The quicker the tooth is re-implanted the better the odds of saving it.

Knocked Out Baby Tooth: • It is not recommended to reinsert a baby tooth that has been knocked out.

• However, you should take your child to the dentist to verify that the entire tooth came out, and that no other teeth were affected.

Broken Tooth: • Gently rinse the area with warm water.

• Apply a cold compress to any bruised areas.

• Find and save any broken tooth fragments (in cold milk or water).

• Call your dentist immediately to make an appointment.

For more serious injuries you should always seek immediate medical care. If you take a hit to the mouth, have your dentist still confirm that you did not fracture a root or something else below the gums. At minimum, it will be good to have a baseline x-ray, in case things change in the future.
