aliva probably isn’t something you spend much time thinking about, unless you are in the dental field like us.

Did you know that without it, we would have some serious health problems? Saliva is essential for a healthy mouth, good digestion, and more.

What Is Saliva?

First, let’s discuss what saliva is and how it is produced in our mouths. Saliva is a liquid composed of water, proteins, mucus, minerals, and an enzyme called amylase. Saliva is made by your salivary glands, which are small organs around your tongue, lips and cheek. Ducts (small tubes) then carry the saliva into your mouth throughout the day in small amounts to keep your mouth moist. Saliva is most active when we are eating, or even just thinking about eating. You may even be producing more saliva by reading this article because you are thinking about the process.

How Does Saliva Impact Your Health?

Saliva does numerous things to aid your health. For starters, it helps prevent tooth decay by continuously washing your teeth from debris and covering your teeth with a thin layer of saliva which guards them from bacteria. It also helps fight off gum disease, since there are antimicrobial agents in it that help kill the bad bacteria.

When eating, our mouth produces acid to help aid in the breaking down of food, saliva helps neutralize those acids during and after eating since those acids can also break down your tooth’s enamel.

Lastly, it helps you swallow food by beginning the digestive process of making it soft and wet so food can go down much easier.

Dry Mouth

Some people tend to have a drier mouth, also known as xerostomia (we have discussed before in a previous article). It’s important to see your dentist if you suffer from dry mouth, as this can affect your overall health as well as your oral health. There are many solutions to dry mouth that we would love to assist you with. Be sure to drink a sufficient amount of water to ensure that you are producing sufficient amount of saliva and are well hydrated.
