himcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day.
at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar.
In 2005 Richard’s sons Jesse and Daniel took over the business. While these two keep Chimcare running, Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse and Daniel remain committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer.

Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals.

TASTE OF THE TOWN
EL TAPATIO
With Love, From Cuautla
By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Hayley Starkey
F
resh, delicious, authentic Mexican food you are sure to love!
Hailing from the tiny rural town of Cuautla, Jalisco—a town in Mexico so diminutive that it doesn’t even register on most maps—Efren Guitron migrated to the United States back in 1970. Just 17 years old at the time, he began working for a relative at a small Mexican restaurant in Seattle. He started at the bottom, busing tables and washing dishes, but over the next 10 years he learned every aspect of the business. He moved to Oregon in 1980 and opened his own restaurant, El Tapatio, in Milwaukie. Now 42 years later, his eatery empire boasts 20 locations all over the Northwest (with a few outliers in neighboring states), including our fantastic little spot here in St. Helens! Niece, business partner (coowner of 3 stores), and manager of our St. Helens location, Estella Alcazar is not only a highly-respected and recognized professional in the industry, she

also happens to be one of the hardest working. She moved here to the United States to work for her Uncle Efren, and following in his footsteps, she couldn’t be more grateful or appreciative. Like her uncle, Estella started at the bottom, learning the ropes, and earning every promotion honestly and with utmost integrity. This is a family business, but there are no free rides! And now 30 years later, Estella is still one of the most dedicated and diligent people you will ever meet. When you walk into the St. Helens location of El Tapatio, take a moment to recognize the care and attention that has gone into every aspect of the business. From the spirited decor—most of which came directly from Mexico, along with the inspired wall murals painted by an artist flown in from Mexico, to the food (sourced from Efren’s own grandmother’s recipes), to the excellent service—where the fact that they are a family-run business means they treat every customer like a member of the family,
make a mean cheeseburger that people rave about!
Estella and her team have worked tirelessly to provide customers with the ultimate dining experience. Their attention to detail cannot be understated! Everything on the menu is cooked fresh to order! Their kitchen has no canned food! Nothing is frozen. Everything is fresh, delicious, authentic, and made from scratch! Estella admitted that sometimes it may take a little longer, but the resulting dishes are more than worth the wait! Local favorites include their Carne Asada, Chile Relleno, Tamales, Enchiladas, Burritos, Fajitas, Molcajete, and their Camarones a la Diabla (Spicy Shrimp!), but you won’t be disappointed with anything you order. And if someone in the family is craving something besides Mexican food, they offer an array of American dishes which are equally satisfying. Estella admitted they
Of course, Mexican dishes are always better with an inspired drink, and at El Tapatio they serve those up in spades! Fresh Margaritas, Palomas, and Mojitos are especially popular, but they have a full bar with over 50 kinds of tequila!, Mexican beers, wine, and more. You will never leave thirsty! Top it all off with an order of amazing homemade Flan, and you are guaranteed to be smiling all the way home! Family-owned and operated, El Tapatio offers the freshest, most exquisite, authentic Mexican food in town! Bring your family, and bring your appetite! El Tapatio is located at 2105 Columbia Blvd. in St. Helens. Give them a ring at (503) 397-1465, or check out their menu at eltapatiooregon.com/st-helens.html.

NORTHWEST PLUMBING SERVICES & SASS AT HOME
For the Love of Your Home By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
C
olumbia County’s premier full-service plumbing company and home gift shop!
Northwest Plumbing Services (NWPS) is a familyowned and operated business located right along the main artery of Columbia River Highway in Warren, Oregon. Established in 1991, by local couple, David and Mindy Sass, the business was actually run out of their home for almost 30 years before expanding, adding their “Sass at Home” retail store, and moving into their beautiful new 4600 sq. ft. warehouse and showroom. I had the pleasure of speaking with Mindy, and she couldn’t have been more excited and enthusiastic about the whole endeavor. Although they are clearly a well-established business and boast an impeccable reputation amongst homeowners and many construction contractors in the area, it’s almost as if they have officially arrived now with the commercial location. They strive to provide superior service and sell professional-quality products, but now they are able to do so in a more convenient location. David has been in the plumbing trade since 1985, and has the added distinction of having been the youngest journeyman plumber in Oregon when he received his license at the age of 20! He operates his crew with professionalism, integrity, honesty, and a sincere dedication to providing every customer with consummate workmanship and service. He lives, works,

and plays in the same community he serves; many customers are friends and neighbors, and he takes pride in the fact that he can look them straight in the eye with confidence over a job well done. New construction and remodels, toilet repairs and replacements, leaking pipes, garbage disposal repairs and installations, sump pumps, faucet repairs and replacements, sink installations, water heater repairs and replacements, new fire sprinkler system installations in new homes, water line repairs and replacement; they do it all! On new construction and remodels, they will work with you and your general
contractor regarding all aspects of the plumbing in your home from the first stages of planning all the way through to setting the finishing fixtures. Repair projects can include your home, shop, or office. And as a point of particular interest, Northwest Plumbing Services has proudly partnered with Bestbath to provide excellent quality, low-threshold, barrierfree fiberglass shower enclosures which are specifically designed to be ADA accessible. Ask how they can replace your old tub with this fantastic product without even having to do a full remodel of your bathroom! In addition to all of the services and products Northwest Plumbing Services provides, Mindy and David’s new retail space has allowed them the freedom to expand into other related markets. Embracing and embodying the spirit of their name, Sass at Home is a reflection of who the Sass family are to their community. If you go online and check out their website at nwplumbingservices.com, you can’t help but notice right there, front in center on the “About Us” page, how active and dedicated they are to supporting local non-profit organizations and other local businesses. It’s no surprise then that their retail space is jam-packed with not only kitchen and bath fixtures and accessories, but also locally-sourced and beautifully-crafted artisanal items such as: soaps, lotions, spices, olive oils, candles, Portland-themed trinkets, local artist’s prints, mugs, t-shirts, and more! Of special note is how they also carry Derive Jewelry, and a percentage of those sales are donated to non-profit organization, Fighting Pretty,
a Portland-based nonprofit focused on helping those battling cancer feel beautiful throughout their fight. Family-owned and operated (their daughter, Susannah, and son, Richard also work with them), and providing the best plumbing products and services in the industry, Northwest Plumbing Services is your one stop shopping solution in Columbia County. Northwest Plumbing Services is located at 58105 Columbia River Highway, Suite B in St. Helens. Come down and check out the new store—and their sister-shop, Sass at Home— today! Give them a call at 503-366-1323 (Northwest Plumbing Services) or 503-410-5197 (Sass at Home), or check out their websites, nwplumbingservices.com and sassathome.com.
