The largest hydrangea selection in North America Celebrating 25 Years

Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley, in Aurora, OR. is a small business with one of the largest selections of hydrangea varieties in North America. Hydrangeas Plus grows and propagates their own varieties with their motto, “We grow with care and it shows.”

Kristin and David VanHoose were in search of a change and a chance when they happened to come across an already established business for sale in the heart of Oregon Wine

Country. They bought Hydrangeas Plus 25 years ago and never looked back. They learned as they went, inherited two employees that helped them navigate the roots they were destined to set. Both employees still work for Hydrangeas Plus today.

“Our parents thought we were nuts. We were working 60 hours a week for somebody else. But both David and I have our MBA and we felt we could tackle the business side. It was just the growing side we had no idea what we were doing. But growing is very logical, you start with a plant, keep it watered, fertilized and then move it to a bigger pot,” Kristin said.

When they purchased the business it was very heavily wholesale – now their main focus is retail. Hydrangeas Plus ships nationwide, with 2020 and everyone home from Covid sparking their biggest year yet. Hydrangeas Plus carries over 300 different varieties of hydrangeas, and that’s just a fraction of the varieties out there, Kristin confirmed.

“Hydrangeas became very, very popular in the early 2000s because of Martha Stewart and the photos from her show. She loved hydrangeas, and others fell in love with them too. Hydrangeas are very diverse, there’s some that just the color changes on them. Then other blooms that have multiple colors and look like a totally different plant,” Kristin said.

With all the hype centered around such a bold flower, that’s when Hydrangeas Plus came in, shipping their plants nationwide and making a huge impression to their customers coast to coast.

FARM FOCUS

“They remind people of their family, their grandmother, their mom. It’s such a family plant. They’re like, ‘oh, you know, my grandmother grew these,’ or ‘I’d love to have one just like grandma,’ it’s such an emotional plant,” Kristin said.

Hydrangeas Plus and the property became such an integral part of the VanHoose’s lives that Kristin and David and Kristin’s brother all got married on the property, where Kristin and David’s children grew up, bringing a new meaning to a family owned and operated business.

Over the last 25 years, Kristin has made connections and friendships to last a lifetime. Hydrangeas Plus and other local and specialty nurseries co-market to create the Cascade Nursery Trail, forming a trail of nurseries through the Willamette Valley.

“The friendships that we’ve made over the course of 25 years is probably what I’m most proud of, and that we’re still in business. Everyone thought we were just crazy to do this since we had no background, but the people along the way have made it all worth it,” Kristin said.

Hydrangeas Plus is located at 6543 S Zimmerman Rd. in Aurora. Visitors are welcome by appointments or on any scheduled open dates that can be found on their website, https://www.hydrangeasplus.com. Typically the summer months offer slower and reduced hours, but come fall is when the business ramps up again. All inquiries can be sent to Info@hydrangeasplus.com or call 503-651-2887.

Shrimp It Up! A Salmon and Steelhead Bait for Summer

Cured “Coon-stripe Shrimp” have not been popularly used as a fishing bait until somewhat recently, but they have changed the game for salmon and steelhead anglers alike. For the bait world, there are pros and cons to the options out there. Eggs are one of the best, but dialing in a cure can sometimes be an unending task, not to mention the mess and their tendency to fall off the hook. Sand shrimp seems to work for salmon, steelhead and sturgeon, but keeping them alive or getting them fresh can be a difficult task.

It’s hard to beat bait in almost any fishery, and especially so when it comes to Columbia and Willamette River Salmon and Steelhead!

A specific kind of shrimp, called “Coon-Stripe Shrimp” is a popular and extremely effective bait for a few reasons:

• Higher durability than sand shrimp

• Consistent color retention

• Can be refrigerated and re-fished

• Effective on Salmon & Steelhead

About “Coon-Stripe Shrimp”

Coonstripe shrimp are a pandalid shrimp with a long, spiny rostrum that protrudes forward from their eyes and carapace. They are the second largest shrimp in Alaskan waters, typically ranging between 3 and 6 inches in length. They can be distinguished from other similar shrimp (like spot shrimp) through the darker striped markings on their abdomens. They have a heavier, more robust appearance that is arched more than other Alaskan shrimp.

Taking Care Of Your Shrimp.

Some anglers cure their own shrimp. Addicted Fishing has a cure that I rely on for making my own special blend. If you can’t make your own, commercially packaged coon shrimp is very effective (with the right brand). My particular brand of choice is “Washington Coon Shrimp” by RiverCity Fishing Products. These shrimp are selected from the boat to the jar using gloves, never having touched human hands. Special care is taken to keep the tails and antennae intact. Subpar shrimp are thrown out so that every shrimp in the jar is fishable. “Millenial Coon Shrimp” is also an effective cure that I especially like for Sockeye but it works well for all speciesl. Be careful not to shake your shrimp jar or turn it upside down. Keeping them intact is key.

Scent

Commercial cures don’t require scent, and often are effective as is, but if other anglers are using the same or similar bait downriver from you, it’s a good idea to add scent.

Coon Shrimp Success

If you’re unsure of the coon shrimp you have available, try to bring two different cures and a few scents to play with. Some days the fish will respond to a certain scent and others they won’t. Ultimately, the fish need to be there - but Coon Stripe Shrimp are a great way to target them.

Celebrating area farm and food producers

There’s no better place to sample a region’s bounty than a farmers’ market, and Yamhill County is abundant with organic food producers, sustainable family farms and talented artists. Celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year, the McMinnville Farmers Market is officially open for the season, and it’s got an exciting lineup of vendors, a food court for hot meals, live music and more!

Organized by the McMinnville Downtown Association, the market takes place every Thursday afternoon, May 16–Oct. 17, 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Located downtown on First and Cowls right next to City Hall, this year’s market will feature more than 60 local vendors, including a few new faces to expand the array of offerings.

A local kettle corn vendor is one of the latest additions and makes fresh popcorn you can smell a mile away, and a new cold brew coffee company is serving their tasty refreshments on tap. High Peak Granola has also joined this season, specializing in gluten-free and vegan varieties. Another new vendor this year is Oregon Cream Honey. If you’ve never had creamed honey, you’re in for a treat! They slowly stir liquid honey into a cream-like texture that is much thicker

and perfect for spreading on toast. Remember to pick up some fresh blooms from one of the floral vendors for a beautiful and cheery addition to your kitchen table for the week.

As in past years, the McMinnville Farmers Market will manage an information booth where EBT/SNAP customers can exchange benefits for market tokens. “We will continue to facilitate the Double Up Food Bucks program,” says Heather Miller of the McMinnville Downtown Association. “SNAP recipients will be able to get $20 in matching dollars to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables.”

The food court area has been expanded so market-goers can sit and relax with a homemade

meal from the hot food vendors. Local live music is scheduled periodically throughout the season, and downtown McMinnville is full of excellent shopping and restaurants, a fantastic area to walk around and explore. The market holds a contest inviting local artists to create a unique poster for the year, so keep your eye out for the winning design; you’ll see it posted in and around the market!

Shopping at the farmers’ market versus the grocery store has many advantages. Farmers generally use organic, regenerative practices that heal the land and soil and produce fresh, highquality produce and pasture-raised meats.

When you buy from your neighborhood farmer, you know where your food is coming from, and you know the product and the dollars stay local. Also, small family farms are known for their dedication to educating the public; many invite visitors to come and see for themselves how their plants and animals are raised.

McMinnville Farmers Market is located downtown at 105 N.E. Third St. Please give them a call at 503-472-3605 or visit their website at downtownmcminnville.com.

The history of Father’s Day

Father’s Day will be celebrated on June 16 this year. Father’s Day, a holiday celebrated around the world, is a day dedicated to honoring fathers and father figures.

The origins of Father’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century in the United States. The holiday’s establishment is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, who was inspired by the newly recognized Mother’s Day. Sonora, the daughter of a Civil War veteran and single father, William Jackson Smart, wanted to honor her father’s selfless service in the war. So in 1909 she proposed the idea of Father’s Day to local ministers in Spokane, Washington, to be celebrated on June 5, her father’s birthday. However, there wasn’t enough time to prepare for the holiday that year, so the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

popular as the holiday became more mainstream and commercial.

In the mid-20th century, the roles of fatherhood began to shift, with an increasing emphasis on fathers being more involved in raising the children and doing more things around the house. This social shift could be seen in how people viewed Father’s Day as a celebration, not only of paternal authority but also of paternal love, care and nurturing.

Father’s Day gradually gained popularity, with several attempts made to establish it as a national holiday. It wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon officially recognized Father’s Day as a national holiday in the United States, to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year.

Throughout its history, Father’s Day underwent several transformations due to cultural, social and economic factors. Initially, it was celebrated with the simple gestures of wearing a red rose to honor a living father and a white rose to honor a deceased father. Greeting cards, often accompanied by gifts and family gatherings, became increasingly

Around the world, Father’s Day has different origins and traditions. In many countries, it’s celebrated on different dates and with varying traditions. For example, in Catholic countries like Spain and Portugal, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19, coinciding with the Feast of St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ. In Germany, Father’s Day, known as “Vatertag,” is celebrated on Ascension Day, with traditions that include men going on hiking trips and pulling wagons filled with beer.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide with a variety of traditions, ranging from simple acts of appreciation to elaborate family gatherings, gift-giving and beer-filled wagons (yes, please!). While its commercialization is often criticized, Father’s Day remains an important holiday for expressing gratitude and love for fathers and father figures, honoring their contributions to family and society as a whole.

As a father myself, I wish you and your families a “Happy Father’s Day!” this June.

Exploringtheretrovideogamerenaissance

most realistic, imaginative video games for both consoles and streaming platforms, many enthusiasts are increasingly looking to the past for a familiar, relaxing and affordable gaming experience.

With the dizzying array of tantalizingly new games out there, complete with ultra-high definition graphics and immersive music and storylines, the rising popularity of old low-tech games with pixelated graphics and simplistic controls is a bit of a head-scratcher. In order to wrap one’s mind around this curious phenomenon, it’s important to understand what the term “retro game” refers to. In gaming parlance the term “retro gaming” instantaneously evokes primitive but charming 8-bit graphics, intuitive straightforward gameplay that is addictive and challenging, yet is, at its core, innately simple.

The heyday of these retro games was back in the 70s and 80s when the internet was still a dream, and words like “cell phone” and “streaming” had not yet entered the common lexicon. During this era, arcade games like Donkey Kong, Centipede,

machines located in pizza parlors, convenience stores and malls across America.

For those of us who grew up during this era the nostalgia factor is immense. As the world continually grows faster and more complex, there is a certain comfort in the return to something familiar. Engaging again with the graphics, sounds and challenges of these simple games has the ability to evoke the past, like a time capsule transporting one back to the days of their youth. Whether rescuing the princess in the various castles of Super Mario Brothers, zapping fast flowing insects in Centipede or defending humanity from invaders from outer space in Galaxian or Space Invaders, engaging once again with these simple yet thrilling games is like reacquainting oneself with an old friend.

Another lure of retro games is their simplicity. Unlike contemporary video games whose complexity often mirrors real life, retro games offer a binary experience that requires minimal decision making and strategizing. In a world where everevolving technology demands increasing levels of expertise and knowledge, the straightforward gameplay of retro games can be a refreshing change of pace. Basic hand/eye coordination and reaction time are typically the skills required in retro games, versus the detailed storylines and game mechanics common to today’s popular titles.

Aside from nostalgia and relaxing game play, the affordability of retro gaming is also appealing. The expense of today’s popular titles creates a strain on the pocketbook for budget-minded individuals. The inexpensive price of retro games — frequently bundled together at minimal cost — creates a democratizing effect, wherein the vast majority of gamers can afford to participate, rather than only the hardcore few willing to shell out significant dollars to stay up to date on the latest and greatest new releases.

Finally, one cannot discount the aesthetic appeal of retro games with their pixelated graphics and jaunty chiptune soundtracks that impart a certain charm to these old titles. While highly orchestrated musical scores and jaw-dropping HD visuals are indeed impressive from a technical standpoint, there are times when simple equates to good. In a sense, retro games are the comfort food of the video game industry. While gourmet cuisine can be an amazing culinary experience, there are times when you simply desire a good old burger and fries.

Leaning over a classic arcade machine, joystick in hand, is a completely

different experience to gaming online via the latest PlayStation or Xbox console wearing a headset and communicating in real-time with players around the globe.

So how has the recent resurgence in retro game popularity affected the gaming industry? The surging demand for retro games has manifested itself in a myriad of ways, from the creation of small hand-held arcade machines for gamers on the go to the digital remastering of classic retro titles. Game designers are also incorporating visuals, sound effects, and game mechanics from the old retro titles and developing new games that capture the essence of these timeless originals. In cities across the globe the burgeoning demand for retro video games has spawned arcade establishments catering to gamers wishing to play the old classics standing up, on machines like those of their youth.

restaurants serving food and beverages to hungry gamers as they strive to save the world from galactic invaders or guide Pacman through a labyrinth of hungry ghosts.

As one might expect, the surging popularity of retro video games has spurred demand for old gaming consoles. The resale market on sites such as eBay for vintage Atari, Nintendo, and Sega Genesis consoles has exploded as the younger generation of gamers discovers these old classics, and Boomers reengage nostalgically with the favorite games of their youth. The demand for retro game paraphernalia has also moved in lockstep with the demand for the old consoles and games cartridges, driving a craze for all things retro gaming.

Often these new arcade establishments also double as

happy cows. Members can visit the farm weekly to pick up their share. “When we onboard someone, they can bring anyone they want and tour the farm. We have regular hours when customers can pick up milk, poke around and say hello to the cow. We’re one of the few farms you can go to and actually lay eyes on the animals producing your food each week,” Christine says.

Anyone who’s tasted raw, farm-fresh milk will tell you it’s an entirely different beverage from store-bought. Thick, creamy, and chock full of nutrients, it has a sweet flavor with fresh, earthy undertones. Cast Iron Farm is a small, family-owned farm specializing in fresh milk from the happiest dairy cows and giving people a way to connect directly with their food and local farm.

The cows at Cast Iron are a mixed breed with an emphasis on Brown Swiss, a lovely variety that thrives in the valley climate and are often crossbred with Jerseys to promote longevity and fertility. Cast Iron has a small beef component to their program, which is operated on a different farm, but they’re primarily interested in dairy cows and caring for the animals throughout their lifespan. Pampered and treated like the queens they are, the ladies are never forced to produce beyond

their limits and live a quiet, comfortable life on the farm with a rotationally grazed pasture and plenty of alfalfa hay in the wet months. “We adore our cows,” Christine says, “and they’re all daughters or granddaughters of something I bred on the farm.”

Christine Anderson grew up on a cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon. After moving to the valley to go to school and spending some time in Europe, she decided to become a food producer. “I spent three years in Greece and noticed how they valued food, how ingrained it was in their culture,” she explains. “I wanted to bring that to my community.” Christine and her family began by leasing a chunk of land on a shared property and purchased Cast Iron Farm in 2010. Cast Iron Farm operates a dairy herd share, which means customers pay to take partial ownership of the animals. In return, they receive the benefits of owning well-cared-for,

The Brown Swiss are also known for their milk, which is exceptionally delicious and contains lots of protein and fat. Cast Iron is committed to safety and transparency concerning unpasteurized milk. “We’ve been listed by the Raw Milk Institute since 2012,” Christine explains, “which involves certain production protocols and regular bacteria tests that are accessible to the public. We’ve never had any issues with the milk that comes from our farm.”

Christine does most of the farm work, with support from her husband and three children. “Farming is my dying passion,” she explains. “My world revolves around milking my critters.” The family also raises sheep, a few Yaks, a couple of horses, a flock of chickens and a few dairy goats that belong to their ten-year-

Breathe Easier, Live Better

Naturally, Non-Surgically.

Do You Suffer with Chronic Sinusitis?

“Thanks Dr. Siegfried. No more sinus congestion, allergies, snoring or mouth breathing,” —Niki Z.

“After the eighth treatment, I was sleeping solidly for eight straight hours for the first time in eight years. And by the way, no more drugs!!” —Jon V.N.

Breathe Better Now!

Are you sick and tired of chronic sinus congestion? Dr. George Siegfried, Chiropractic Physician at Dunn Chiropractic Clinic in McMinnville, has been helping patients breathe better with Bilateral Nasal Specific Treatment since 1976. This natural, nonsurgical treatment has helped alleviate chronic sinus and other related problems even in patients who have already had sinus surgeries, or those who have considered sinus surgery prior to visiting Dr. Siegfried. “Desperate” and “at the end of their rope,” these patients are grateful for his care and expertise in providing Bilateral Nasal Specific Treatment, which he has performed thousands of times. Furthermore, this treatment uses no drugs and no needles.

Could This Be You?

It’s been estimated that 30 to 60 million people in America suffer from sinus congestion which can manifest in mouth breathing, dry eyes, dry mouth, snoring, limited sleep and sleep apnea, low energy, loss of smell, taste and hearing. Many have had to resort to a CPAP machine to keep their airways open, just to try and obtain a decent sleep cycle.

Who Can Benefit?

Over the years, Dr. Siegfried, an international chiropractor, treated world-class athletes from the 1984 Italian Olympic Team Track and Field Division, United Arab Emirates Track and Field Team, and other world-class athletes. He’s treated Broadway dancers, San Francisco Ballet dancers, opera singers and jockeys. Bilateral Nasal Specific Treatment has helped children and adults suffering with chronic sinusitis “get their life back” after experiencing a deviated septum, broken nose, concussion, whiplash injury, birth injury and more. Dr. Siegfried has helped so many patients that his colleagues have referred to him not only as the leading expert in this treatment, but also the “guru” and even the “godfather.”

Who is Dr. Siegfried and His Clinic?

Dr. Siegfried has been in practice since 1984 at the Dunn Chiropractic Clinic and is the third generation of chiropractors at that clinic. Established in McMinnville in 1922, Dunn Chiropractic has “A Compassionate Tradition of Natural Pain Relief and Wellness,” states Dr. Siegfried. The father of four grown children and grandpa to nine grandchildren, Dr. Siegfried studied over 10 years and 1,000 hours as protégé to Dr. J.R. Stober, the developer of this natural, non-surgical specialty. Treatment is selfpay as Dr. Siegfried is out of network for insurance, but patients from all over the world seek him out to help relieve their chronic sinusitis and escape the drudgery of the related suffering.

To consult with Dr. Siegfried, call the clinic at (503) 433-6902, located at 301 N.E. Dunn Place, McMinnville. Clinic hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9AM-6PM. Dr. Siegfried’s website is nasalspecific.com.

Confession to Yamhill County...

Dear Friend,

When I meet people in McMinnville, they usually say, “Oh, I know you. You ’re the doctor that I ’ve seen in the ad with your son Chris, from the Bachelorette. ” Well, I want you to know a little more about that picture and why I use it in my ads. Years ago in High School in Philly something happened that changed my life. I hurt my back playing football. Really bad! I could hardly walk. I remember the instant I felt that knife in my back. My Dad took me to Dr. Hill, our family chiropractor who adjusted my back.

MY CONFESSION TO MCMINNVILLE AND YAMHILL

Friend,

Dear Friend,

When I meet people in McMinnville, they usually say, “Oh, I know you. You ’re the doctor that I ’ve seen in the ad with your son Chris, from the Bachelorette. ” Well, I want you to know a little more about that picture and why I use it in my ads. Years ago in High School in Philly something happened that changed my life. I hurt my back playing football. Really bad! I could hardly walk. I remember the instant I felt that knife in my back. My Dad took me to Dr. Hill, our family chiropractor who adjusted my back.

When I meet people in Yamhill County, they usually say, “Oh, I know you. You’re the doctor that I’ve seen on YouTube with your son Chris, from the Bachelorette.” Well, I want you to know a little more about that picture and why I use it in my ads. In 1976, when I was studying to be a chiropractor, I received an amazing treatment at age 26 that totally changed my life and got rid of my chronic headaches, sinusitis and snoring from falls, bumps and thumps in sports, even a few fights growing up on the streets of Philly. It is called the Bilateral Nasal Specific Treatment from my teacher Dr. Stober, at the University of Western States in Portland. And all I could say then, even now, was WOW! After that first treatment, I was able to breathe so much better through my nose. And my headaches? Felt like a knife was taken out of my head. Even my vision improved from needing glasses to not needing glasses. At age 26, you learn how to put up with a lot, but I was at the “end of my rope,” desperate, in spite of being a competitive athlete pitching in the semi-professional Portland City League. Once I had that adjustment, “the lights went on for me” and I knew at that moment I wanted to learn this special technique, developed, practiced, and taught by Dr. Stober for over 30 years before I had my first treatment in 1976. I was so committed to learning his technique that I spent over 1,000 hours over a 10-year period observing and studying with him and am now a leading expert. I became his protégé and the only student to treat him for his chronic headaches he suffered with from a bad head injury as a kid, leading him to develop this special, non-surgical treatment. I also truly believe he saved my son Chris from a lot of suffering as well.

Well all I can say is WOW! When I left Dr. Hill’s office, I could stand up straight and walk. And the pain was gone! I knew at that moment I wanted to be a chiropractor, even though I was supposed to follow in the surgical footsteps of my great uncle who founded Nazareth Hospital in Philly – and cousin – who was an orthopedist. After undergraduate college at Schiller University in Heidelberg Germany, and pre-med studies at Temple University, I was accepted at the University of Western States in Portland, drove across the country, started in the fall of 1976 and graduated in 1981. And as they say, the rest is history. But before settling in McMinnville at the Dunn Chiropractic Clinic which was founded in 1922, I had the good fortune to travel with and take care of professional Broadway and Ballet dancers, Jockeys, the 1984 Italian Olympic Team Track and Field Division and many other professional athletes while in Italy.

front of our eyes, my wife and I could see the shape of his head changing. I took over Chris’s care from there and he became an All-Star baseball pitcher and soccer player in high school, a walk-on at the University of Portland, and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 11th round and the 354th pick and pitched for them for 5 years. One just never knows how valuable a Bilateral Nasal Specific treatment and sound nutrition can do for a person’s health. It's strange how life is because I have treated many patients since 1976 with chronic migraines, sinusitis, snoring, concussions, whiplash, birth trauma, and other conditions related to blows to the head or difficult births. Here’s just one testimonial from a recent patient. And there are reviews as well as on my website: www.nasalspecific.com

Still Oozing with Color, Just in a Different Form

Baker falls back in love with pottery

The world is full of stories about people who start their journey on one path only to find themselves on another. When Maggie Pike sold her successful bakery, Maggie’s Buns, she thought she would be bored. But instead, she fell back in love with pottery, a craft she had dabbled in thirty-two years earlier. Now, she makes vibrant creations that are not only utilitarian but also beautiful works of art.

When asked what drew her to pottery, Maggie admits she used to be terrible at it, but had always enjoyed it. After selling her bakery, she longed for something creative to do, so she dug out her old potter’s wheel and gave it a spin. To Maggie’s surprise, she got it right on the first try, and that was all it took to reignite her passion.

The colors Maggie discovers on her travels inspire the forms and textures of her pottery. She sifts through photos from her latest trip, selects about ten colors, and starts creating. Her glazing process involves up to seventeen hand-painted layers, each adding depth and personality to her creations. Even Maggie doesn’t always know what the final product will look like, but the unexpected results are part of the fun.

The process of creation holds its own magic for Maggie. Unveiling a new design from her kiln, fondly named “Calvin,” is always thrilling. Nearly 30% of pottery is lost in the kiln due to various factors, so she feels an indescribable sense of accomplishment when a piece turns out exactly as she dreamed. Despite years of experience, she never quite knows how a piece will look after it’s glazed, so it’s

nothing short of magical when her vision comes to life.

Maggie found an intimate connection between her love for food and creating practical and visually appealing creations. Her work is a tribute to the moments that often go unnoticed yet hold profound significance, like sipping hot coffee from a beautifully crafted mug or enjoying a homecooked meal in a hand-thrown bowl. This is her way of spreading joy, and she finds inspiration in the thought that her creations might make someone’s day a little brighter. She hopes this cycle of inspiration — where the excitement of her audience fuels her creative energy — continues to thrive, enabling her to create art that brings smiles and warmth to people’s lives. If you eat off something every day, it might as well be a work of art!

Valley Arts Association has profoundly impacted Maggie’s artistic journey. The familiar faces and warm appreciation of the local community foster confidence and inspire her to experiment with her artistic style. Valley Art’s vibrant culture and lively environment have also provided ample opportunities for networking and collaboration. Moreover, Valley Art’s website serves as a hub for upcoming events, allowing her to stay connected to the local art scene, discover new inspiration, and showcase her creations.

Maggie’s journey to becoming a potter was unexpected, but it has led to some truly stunning work. Her use of color and hand glazing has made Maggie’s pieces into unique and beautiful works of art that people can enjoy. If you’re looking for something functional and artistic to add to your home, you can’t go wrong with one of Maggie’s creations.

To see more of Maggie’s work, check out her Facebook pages under ‘Maggie Pike’ or ‘Passport to Color.’ You can also see her creations at Valley Art at 2022 Main Street in Forest Grove, (503) 357-3703 or on their website at: www.valleyart.org

In recent years nostalgia has settled into the gaming industry. Despite the continuing demand for the newest, most realistic, imaginative video games for both consoles and streaming platforms, many enthusiasts are increasingly looking to the past for a familiar, relaxing and affordable gaming experience.

With the dizzying array of tantalizingly new games out there, complete with ultrahigh definition graphics and immersive music and storylines, the rising popularity of old low-tech games with pixelated graphics and simplistic controls is a bit of a head-scratcher.

During this era, arcade games like Donkey Kong, Centipede, Asteroids, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders reigned supreme. While many of these games eventually made it onto various at-home consoles, the original experience was to play these games standing up on arcade machines located in pizza parlors, convenience stores and malls across America.

For those of us who grew up during this era the nostalgia factor is immense. As the world continually grows faster and more complex, there is a certain comfort in the return to something familiar. Engaging again with the graphics, sounds and challenges of these simple games has

the ability to evoke the past, like a time capsule transporting one back to the days of their youth.

In a world where ever-evolving technology demands increasing levels of expertise and knowledge, the straightforward gameplay of retro games can be a refreshing change of pace. Basic hand/eye coordination and reaction time are typically the skills required in retro games, versus the detailed storylines and game mechanics common to today’s popular titles.

Aside from nostalgia and relaxing game play, the affordability of retro gaming is also appealing. The expense of today’s popular titles creates a strain on the pocketbook for budgetminded individuals.

While highly orchestrated musical scores and jaw-dropping HD visuals are indeed impressive from a technical standpoint, there are times when simple equates

to good. In a sense, retro games are the comfort food of the video game industry. While gourmet cuisine can be an amazing culinary experience, there are times when you simply desire a good old burger and fries. Leaning over a classic arcade machine, joystick in hand, is a completely different experience to gaming online via the latest PlayStation or Xbox console wearing a headset and communicating in real-time with players around the globe.

So how has the recent resurgence in retro game popularity affected the gaming industry? The surging demand for retro games has manifested itself in a myriad of ways, from the creation of small hand-held arcade machines for

Often these new arcade establishments also double as restaurants serving food and beverages to hungry gamers as they strive to save the world from galactic invaders or guide Pacman through a labyrinth of hungry ghosts.

The demand for retro game

paraphernalia has also moved in lockstep with the demand for the old consoles and games cartridges, driving a craze for all things retro gaming.

No matter what your age or level of gaming experience — Baby Boomer to Gen Z, avid gamer to newbie – retro video games have something to offer everyone. Whether you grew up in the 70s or 80s and seek a nostalgic blast to the past, or hail from a more recent generation, the realm of retro gaming is a wonderful respite from the complexities of our modern life— digital comfort food for the soul!

Finland’s Party Metal Masters! Visits Oregon

When a band chooses a moniker like Battle Beast to conjure an image representative of their sound, there are certain tacit expectations which must be met. They have to be big, larger than life, hard-driving, and full of energy. The songs need to be aggressive but catchy, with soaring sing-along choruses, outrageous guitars, and bombastic production. The kind of music that puts a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Right? Because a Beast ready for Battle does not evoke soft balladry. It is not befitting of a band who plays Adult Contemporary, or Pop, Country or Rap. It has to be metal, with a capital M and that’s exactly what they are.

Of course, for those familiar with the genre, particularly European Power Metal, Battle Beast is a known commodity. Established in 2008, they are actually 16 years and 6 albums deep into a career that has seen them steadily growing a rabid fanbase. Their most current tour, which is in support of their most recent album, 2022’s Circus of Doom, is their first as a headliner in the United States.

In a few words, who or what is Battle Beast to you?

Noora: From a musical standpoint, Battle Beast is the six of us. We are like a family. A very tight unit with all members contributing unique ingredients to the overall mix. We all have different influences which, when combined, form our particular brand of positive-energy Power Metal/Party Metal.

This sees the band in top form both as a well-oiled touring machine, and as a first class recording act. In terms of potential success, the sky’s really the limit. This band is teeming with fantastic musicians, a charismatic powerhouse vocalist in Noora Louhimo, and an on-stage chemistry that is undeniable. They each genuinely enjoy one another’s company, not to mention the music they play. World domination is a forgone conclusion. They can’t fail.

Publisher Matt Nelson and Writer Dennis McNabb were afforded the privilege of interviewing two members of the band, lead singer Noora Louhimo and founding guitarist Juuso Soinio, an hour before their Portland show on May 22nd at Revolution Hall. Here’s what they had to say about the band, their music, and what the future holds. We have taken some liberties and paraphrased when necessary due to space constraints.

Without even just one member, everything changes. From a production standpoint, it’s the entire organization, road crew, etc. Everyone collaborates and works together, making this a well-oiled machine.

In the first iteration of the band, previous member Anton Kabanen seemed to hold the reins. He was credited with writing all of the music.

The band parted ways with him in 2015 due to musical differences and other unresolvable issues. What was the transition like and how has the band dealt with the changes?

Juuso: It’s a much more positive and collaborative situation now. We’re a very democratic band now, but it has taken some work. We do all still have issues sometimes—

Noora (laughing): Yes. Five brothers and one sister.

Juuso: But we are in a much healthier place. And, I have to say, Anton got what he wanted (with his “new” band, Beast in Black). That situation has worked out for him. And this situation is working out for us.

Noora: He got what he wanted. We got what we wanted. And now there are two good bands that came out of it. Our policy is to always be looking forward, not back.

We want to focus on making positive music and putting on great shows for our fans. Brothers Janne and Joona Björkroth (keyboardist and lead guitarist), along with bass player Eero Sipilä are our main songwriters now, but everyone is invited to contribute.

Juuso: Yes, and each has different influences. Janne is much more into pop music.

Noora: Right, and Joona has two sides to him. He likes very complex heavy metal as well as 90’s-influenced pop music. It’s really cool. I love that mixture. And I enjoy being able to tell them, “I would really like to try this kind of song”, and they will bring me something that fits that style perfectly. Also, the songs now are written for my voice and my range.

(Laughing) Do you have a range? Are there any limits to what you can do? It seems that you can sing anything!

Juuso: There are some limits.

Noora (laughing): No. No limits!

Juuso: Not much she can’t do.

Noora: But it’s also that I really want to try new things. On every album, the guys always bring new challenges for me, and it’s like, “Oh, my God. How am I going to do this?” But it’s good for me. It’s

like a puzzle to crack and I really enjoy that. As long as I can find some sort of personal attachment to the song, to understand its meaning, then I enjoy performing the song.

What’s your favorite part of the process? Is it the writing, the recording, the touring?

Juuso: I would say it’s playing live because actually recording and making albums can be very stressful. During the writing process, when songs are coming together, there is a creative spark that is sometimes lost over multiple takes. There is a lot of pressure in the studio, and it all becomes a bit too familiar, but once the album is completed and we get to play those songs live, the spark comes back. You get to interact with the crowd, to see how they respond to the new stuff, and that makes it all worthwhile.

Noora: The live shows are definitely the best part, but also, I love so much the rehearsing and preparing for the live production. Designing the costumes, working on the choreography, and visualizing how the show will look; that’s something else I love. We’ve been doing some recordings, too, for a live album and video. That will hopefully be coming out soon.

For the video, No More Hollywood Endings, did you do the choreography?

Noora: I did my own choreography for the role I played, but we hired someone for the rest of the dancers. When I first heard the song, I immediately envisioned the whole thing with the backup dancers, etc. I do that with most of our songs, visualize how it will look live on stage or on video.

Battle Beast live is quite an experience. The entire band consists of incredible musicians who all put on a fantastic show. And this is in no way to be disrespectful to the rest of the band, but Noora, your voice is a genuine commodity. It’s so powerful and you have such amazing control, it puts the band on a whole other level. How do you maintain that over the course of a tour?

Juuso (laughing): No offense at all. I knew what you were going to say before you even said it.

Noora (humble): Thank you. Thank you so much. It’s basic

enjoy the music and we want people to know, heavy metal isn’t always about grumpy faces and melancholy tunes.

Juuso (everyone laughing again): One important thing we’ve managed to create is a so-called “safe space”. We all make mistakes but we don’t judge each other. We allow each other the freedom to make those mistakes, and still have fun with it. Otherwise, no one dares to try anything new. I’m very proud

I hope the audience feels that atmosphere during our performances, too. It’s very important to us that our fans know they can come as they are. Everyone is accepted.

Juuso: That goes for how the fans choose to enjoy the show, as well. Whether they want to stand in the corner, or dance and go crazy, everyone is free to be themselves.

Do you have a favorite song to play live?

Noora: It changes, but right now it’s Wings of Light. That song makes me really happy. I feel like it’s the climax of the show.

Juuso: Me too. Those types of songs are my favorite to play. I love the riff.

Are you working on new music? And if so, what is the direction it’s taking?

Noora: We are! Some of the guys are probably writing right now.

Juuso: Yes, those guys are always writing. Whenever the inspiration comes. We’re in the very early stages though.

Noora: From what we’ve heard, the new stuff is very much in the vein of Battle Beast. It’s very energetic, and fans will not be disappointed. We haven’t chosen which songs will be on the album yet, but we are extremely excited about it.

So, what is next for Battle Beast?

Noora: Stadiums. Arenas. World domination. We want to be as big as Nightwish or Metallica or Iron Maiden. Why not? That’s where we would like to take this. The genre and the industry are going in the right direction by more fully embracing female-lead bands. We would like to be a part of that movement.

The show that followed was every bit as bombastic, energetic, and mesmerizing as promised. Nearly two hours of top notch metal played to perfection. By the time you read this article, Battle Beast will have wrapped up the current leg of their North American tour. But they will return, and if you’ve not yet experienced the Beast live and in Battle, you owe it to yourself to catch them next time around. In the meantime, catch them on youtube and watch their website: battlebeast.fi/home for updates on their upcoming live CD as well as future releases and concert dates.
