Ripe for the Picking PDX’S FRUITION DEFIES GENRES WITH NEW TAKE ON AMERICANA

I

n the vast and diverse tapestry of what we refer to as the human experience, the almost singular language which transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity, and cultural background is music. In profound and inexplicable ways, it acts as a unifying force – a catalyst for emotional expression and connection that evokes harmony among even the most dissonant of forces. The bands who find their audiences, and especially those who endure over time, are the ones who possess artistic integrity, who refuse to follow trends, but instead follow their muse, wherever it might take them. Portland based Fruition is just such a band. They are the real deal. With genuine authenticity, Fruition has steadily grown and expanded their sound since their debut album in 2008. Subverting genres, they have explored a variety of textures and musical soundscapes, releasing a slew of consistently strong albums which, while running the gamut of styles, still manage to maintain the sound of Fruition. The music cuts deep, with raw emotionality and a catchy, folkAmericana sensibility, grounded by gorgeous three-part harmonies. I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with one of the founding members, Kellen Asebroek (vocals, rhythm guitar, piano), and he stated that it was their vocal compatibility that really brought the band together. The past few years have seen the band evolving even

further and now that they are preparing to release a new collection of songs for the world — with a scheduled release date of spring, 2024 — they are more excited than ever to share what they have achieved. Although they didn’t consciously set out to do so, the band really discovered their identity on this release. “It only took us 16 years,” Kellen joked, but they finally came to the conclusion that they are an Americana band. They have played at Folk, Blues, Bluegrass, and Jamband festivals: their music incorporates all of those genres, but at their core they are Americana, and discovering that has been a liberating experience. For a band who has always prided themselves on their authenticity, their latest album will perhaps be their most authentic to date! Recorded live without overdubs, autotune, or studio “magic,” this new collection promises a certain grit and immediacy that is missing from a lot of current releases. With deeply moving lyrical content, catchy hooks, and creamy-smooth vocal harmonies, this is music for the soul. Fruition fosters a shared emotional experience among their listeners that defies the constraints of cultural divides, and in this day and age, what more can be asked of a band? Find out more about Fruition via their website: fruitionband. com or follow them on social media under fruitionpdx.

HIGH PEAKS

Day HikeHiking Ramona Falls By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

GORGEOUS VIEWS WORTHY OF THE DRIVE

H

iking is a favorite pastime for many of us here in the Northwest. Not only is it a chance to enjoy this beautiful region of the country we live in, to commune with nature, but it’s also a fantastic way to sneak in some exercise without feeling like it’s a chore. And because trails come in all shapes and sizes, it’s something most of us can do. Certainly, there are considerations to be made. Mood, availability, and level of fitness/ability all come into play, but relatively speaking, hiking is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get the blood flowing. For those looking for the perfect day hike (late spring through early fall), one that requires a decent chunk of time and at least a moderate skill level, there are few trails in the area that are more enjoyable, diverse and rewarding than Ramona Falls. Tucked into the west side of Mount Hood along the Upper Sandy River near Rhododendron, Ramona Falls Trail is a 7.1 mile loop that cuts through the forest, wanders past the titular falls, and at one point, even connects to the famed Pacific Crest Trail. For the average hiker, it takes a little over three hours to complete the loop, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear and take some water and snacks. In fact, like any hike, it never hurts to go prepared with emergency essentials. At the outset, you will be crossing the

6 | Oregon Lifestyle Magazine

Sandy River over a “footbridge” made of logs. Depending on how high and fast the river is flowing, this crossing can be dangerous. Be smart, use caution, and don’t cross after a heavy rain. But once you get past that, the rest of the trail is only moderately difficult (more due to the length than the terrain), and the diversity of the terrain alone is worth the trip. The parking area and trailhead are located in The Old Maid Sand Pit, an eerily barren, rocky, alien landscape. It’s an odd start, to be sure, but as you progress you will find other areas of the hike that are so lush and green, carpeted with moss and toadstools in such a whimsical manner, that you’ll think you wandered into the Hobbit’s shire. The crowning jewel, the falls themselves, are also a sight to behold: 120 feet tall, and almost as wide, rivulets of water spreading out and cascading over multiple crags and shelves of rock like marbles in a giant Pachinko machine. This is a popular hike with a lot of foot traffic. It’s highly unlikely that you will be alone on the trail but it’s well worth the trip regardless. There is plenty of room under the canopy of trees for everyone to sit and enjoy the falls, but as always, be respectful of others and don’t forget to pack out everything you pack in. At the end of this one, you will likely feel it in your muscles, but you will also feel refreshed and revitalized, ready to take on the world. Bring your dogs too, provided they are on a leash!

ADVENTURE AWAITS AROUND THE BEND!

E

xperience the Pacific Northwest from the road! A wonderland of adventure and activities await road warriors and day trippers alike. Considering an end-of-season ski outing to Mount Hood? Or maybe a trip to your favorite Oregon winery for some aged Gouda and a glass of Pinot? Perhaps a trip to the Coast with the kids and the dogs. So what’s stopping you? Not your car, if it’s in good working order. The benefit of regular oil changes and routine vehicle maintenance can never be underestimated, and putting it off has thwarted many a plan for taking to the road. The worst is breaking down enroute somewhere between “here” and “there.” Steve’s Auto Service (serving Yamhill County) is always looking out for your best interests. Committed to keeping your vehicle road-ready and safe, Steve’s Auto

8 | Oregon Lifestyle Magazine

Service is a valuable travel partner for all your journeys along the highway, wherever they may take you. Steve Drew, owner of both Steve’s Auto Service locations – McMinnville and Newberg — takes pride in running his business with complete transparency. “Anybody can tell you they’re honest,” Steve says, “but I’ve always made it a point from the day I opened to be very transparent.” Steve’s dedicated to keeping clients safe on the road from the hazards of mechanical, electrical and tire failure. He’s committed to providing expert service and value for the price they pay to maintain their automobile. Aware that vehicle repairs and maintenance can be a major expense for clients, Steve stresses that bringing your car or truck in for regular oil changes helps mitigate or at least manage some of these expenses. In addition to the obvious benefit of running clean oil through an engine, Steve relates that “most shops use oil

changes as a point of inspection every time a customer comes in.” Problems or potential problems found by your mechanic that could impact the quality and enjoyment of your life can then be addressed within your own timeframe and budget. Warding off unwelcome surprises that might disrupt or interfere with spontaneous adventure seeking or a well-thought out and meticulously planned road trip cannot be taken lightly. “We’re there for the long haul for the customer,” Steve says, and he’ll go the extra mile for the regulars including supplying them with new tires as needed. Customer service and providing a great value is such a strength for Steve’s Auto Service that customers go to great lengths to continue servicing their vehicles at Steve’s – many have been with him since day one! One customer who started with the opening of the Newberg location in 2001 has since moved to Seattle, but continues to schedule her car’s maintenance when she comes to town to visit her parents. This same individual was instrumental in encouraging her Seattle neighbor to ship a car to Steve’s to have an engine installed. “We’re pretty lucky to have customers like that,” Steve comments. Professionally, Steve Drew has worked on cars since the mid-1980s. He opened Steve’s Auto Service as a

new shop in Newberg in July 2001. “I swore I was going to do everything myself,” Steve relates: that only lasted about seven to eight months as business grew beyond his ability to handle the workload by himself. In 2016 he bought Ray’s Auto in McMinnville, changing its name to Steve’s Auto Service as well. Today, Steve’s Auto Service employees enjoy a family-style culture which filters amongst the fourteen staff members comprising the two locations. “I am very blessed to have such talented and dedicated employees,” Steve shares. “Without them, none of my success would be possible.” Steve recently purchased a third shop – Ed’s Transmission in McMinnville, which is still in transition but will continue operating under Ed’s name. Keeping the legacy name serves as a tribute to the business Ed began in 1966 and what

subsequent owner, Max, who took over in 1998, built over his twenty-five years at Ed’s Transmission. Residing in Dundee since 1995, Steve and his wife Sandy have three grown children who all live locally. Although the Drews have no grandchildren yet, they do have a “grand-puppy,” their son’s Lagotto Romagnolo, Honey. Bred for truffle hunting, Honey is being trained by the breeders, Amico Roma. Kevin, co-founder of Amico Roma and former employee of Steve’s Auto Service from years back, moved on to become a Lagotto breeder. Kevin and co-founder Carly likewise offer guided truffle hunting tours on their McMinnville property. What a fun experience that would be, heading out to Amico Roma in your well-maintained auto to go truffle hunting! Receiving top reviews on numerous car and auto sites such as Carfax,

SureCritic and Yelp, Steve’s Auto Service believes, “Fixing your car is about trust!” A majority of their business comes from repeat customers and referrals from their very pleased clients. “We received the best service imaginable! As out of towners we didn’t know what we were in for but their team fixed us up right away and got us in tip top shape. A HUGE thank you from the hippy van!” – Jacque W. “Excellent service, fair price, friendly and helpful. One of the best car shops I’ve dealt with in 40 years.” – 2015 Acura RDX Technology Owner Steve’s Auto Service McMinnville is located at 710 NE 3rd St. in McMinnville. Phone (503) 472-3483 or email stevesautooregon@gmail.com. The Newberg shop is located at 112 N Meridian St. in Newberg. Phone (503) 554-1778 or email stevesautonewberg@gmail.com.

Directions  Preheat oven to 375ºF. Line sheet pan with parchment paper or silicone mat. Have your fortune strips ready to go.  Using stand mixer, whip egg whites and sugar on high speed for about 2 minutes, until frothy. Whip in melted butter, vanilla, almond extract and water until incorporated. Add flour and mix until flour just disappears.  With tablespoon measure, spoon batter onto parchment paper and spread out into even 3-inch circles. Only do 2 to 3 at a time as they set quickly and you won’t be able to fold more than that.  Bake cookies 7 to 8 minutes, until edges brown slightly (see note).  When each batch finishes baking, remove from oven and quickly flip circle over. Place note in center and fold cookie in half (a semicircle). Place semicircle onto edge of a cup, and quickly fold ends down to crimp into a fortune cookie shape. Place cookie in muffin tin to cool and hold its shape. Repeat with remaining batter and enjoy. Note: If you let them brown too much, they’ll snap when you shape them. If they don’t brown enough, they will tear. ALSO: Experiment with food coloring, using red for Valentine’s Day.

FARM FOCUS

A Better Food Supply

By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Source Farms

Y

ou are what you eat! The saying is familiar and it even makes sense. But do we bring it home? Source Farms in Yamhill, Oregon is a trusted place to purchase locally and humanely raised proteins and produce sourced from local farmers. With this vision of interconnectedness, Source Farms believes that “when you nourish the land and its inhabitants, it nourishes back.” Their commitment to “lead with integrity so that you know exactly what’s on your plate” is demonstrated in every nutrient-rich meat and vegetable they provide. Source Farms’ grass-fed and grass-finished beef and lamb and pastured pork is lower in calories and higher in Omega 3 fatty acids than those fed partially on grain. Source Farms supplies their Farm Stand with seasonal meats and vegetables grown on their regenerative farm in Carlton as well as other regional farms. You can also find eggs, raw honey, milk and other locally-sourced products at the Yamhill Farm Stand, open Thursday – Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers can choose from whole or fractional shares of nutrient-dense proteins that can be conveniently picked up in person from the Yamhill Farm Stand. In addition, curated boxes of meats are also available

through their online shop and can be shipped nationwide to your door. They also offer seasonal CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) where members receive an assortment of seasonal vegetables. Buying local food goes a long way to support agricultural farming, ensuring farmers yearlong stability which perpetuates the regenerative process. Source Farms will be participating in Farmers Market’s across the Portland

Metro area and the valley including Montavilla, Happy Valley, Tigard, Hillsboro, McMinnville & Aloha. A full list of markets will continue to be updated through the spring and can be found at https://sourcefarms.love/ pages/farmers-markets. Source Farms embraces the spirit of humans as good stewards in their community, stewards over the animals, plants, sea life and land. Brenda Smola-Foti of Tabula Rasa Farms in Carlton and her husband, Frank Foti, set out to bring people back to the land and to where their food is grown. With the 2022 acquisition of Kookoolan Farms in Yamhill (present site of Source Farms) the couple are realizing those dreams. Heather Miller, spokesperson for Source Farms notes, “We work with other like-minded farmers to bring food to the community that is responsibly raised and nutrientdense.” She points out that “Source Farms is a place people can go and feel confident that they are supporting local agriculture that benefits land, animals and people.” Although Source Farms and its owners may be relatively new to the community, Heather emphasizes, “We are rooted here, our employees live here, and our goal is to be a part of the community for the next several

generations.” In addition to supporting numerous local associations directly, Frank and Brenda also founded TREL (Truth Responsibility Evolution Love), a foundation which contributes annually to nonprofits in Yamhill County. The Mysterious Grey Ghost THE LIFE OF THE WINTER STEELHEAD

E

very year, the “Grey Ghost” enters the coastal regions of our beloved Pacific Northwest region. Born in the rivers and creeks that we pass by daily, they have a unique journey of 1-2 years in freshwater before migrating to the Pacific Ocean to begin a feeding journey that can last anywhere from 6 months to 6 years. These are winter steelhead.

By Lucas Holmgren, Contributing Writer

Ocean-Run Rainbow Trout For anglers in the know, these are considered one of the premier sportfish in the world. Steelhead are the same species as rainbow trout, but they have the predisposition to migrate out of their rivers into giant open water to feed before returning at spawn time. Steelhead and rainbows can spawn together, and produce either resident rainbow or ocean-run steelhead in the same hatch! This is why you will see trucks parked at boat launches in the dead of winter. With frigid temperatures, rain and snow, winter steelhead return after swimming all the way to places like the coast of Japan, Russia and Alaska. Because they are solitary during their feeding phase, they are one of the most mysterious “anadromous” (freshwater born fish with an ocean phase) fish that exist. Chinook and Coho salmon often travel in schools, following the Pacific Coastline and feeding, being intercepted by commercial fishing fleets. They are easier to predict and keep track of. Steelhead tend to swim straight across the ocean, heading into dangerous water with many predators. As a result, only about 1 in 100 steelhead that enter the ocean will return alive to spawn. Steelhead are Native to Oregon I’m sure you’ve seen PDX-area rivers like the Sandy and Clackamas. Although the last several years have been incredibly tough for steelhead numbers, they are still sneaking in through tidewater into these rivers, utilizing the wintertime flows to travel and hold. They are not in feeding mode at this time, although they often strike lures and bait aggressively out of instinct. They use the magnetic polar queues to navigate back to the mouth of their river and then start to use their incredible sense of smell to find the exact area where they were born. The Oregon Coast has a healthier population of these sneaky ghosts. They are not easy to spot like salmon, nor do they tend to jump or roll at the surface much. Because of this, you may walk a quiet section of a river and never know that there are a few large steelhead hiding in a riffle next to you. The only time they expose themselves is when they’re spawning. This is best observed in March, April and May, when the majority of winter steelhead spawn. The Future These fish are a hallmark of Oregon wildlife, but they need our help! We are at the lowest levels ever counted for these magnificent fish. The more we can do to protect creek and river habitat, protect cold, clean water, and supplement them in smart, scientific ways, the better chance we have at future generations enjoying these mysterious ghosts!
