hile Oregon City boasts a wide variety of amenities, from its charming downtown to its one-of-a-kind Municipal Elevator, one thing it is decidedly not known for is oceanfront beach access. But stepping into Coasters Crossing, you might just forget that fact. That’s because the laid-back, family-friendly eatery is decorated with floats and other beach finds (even a surfboard!) from owner Brian Grant’s hometown of Cannon Beach. “I grew up in Cannon Beach, which is why our logo has Haystack Rock,” Brian explains. “It’s kind of a cool story that people like to hear about. Even all of the beach grass outside the restaurant is from Cannon Beach. Everybody loves Cannon Beach, so it’s kind of fun to be able to bring a piece of that here to Oregon City.” The beach theme is more than just a reference to Brian’s own roots, however. His wife, Leigh, also grew up on the coast and spent summers with her dad in Cannon Beach long before the two of them ever met. The name was also inspired by The Keg Steakhouse, where the couple met for the first time. They liked the name “Keggers,” which is a nickname for Keg employees, but thought that was a little too “frat

housey” for what they were going for. “So my wife said, ‘Hey, we both have this connection to the coast. Let’s go with Coasters,’” Brian recalls. “It was a little more family-friendly.” Coasters is truly family-run, and that very much includes the decor. The Grants’ 13-year-old daughter helped decorate and design the restaurant’s beach-themed ambience, while the art was provided by Brian’s parents — both of whom are artists. “When both of your parents are artists, you get free art for your restaurants,” he says with a laugh and a shrug. Brian even started his restaurant career in Cannon Beach as a busboy for the Driftwood Inn, which was owned by his best friend’s dad. That was where his dream initially began. “He had a cool old car, and it just seemed like it would be fun someday to own my own restaurant,” he recollects. After years of managing restaurants for other people, opportunity finally came knocking on Brian’s door, and the Grants opened their first Coasters location about five years ago. It was a brewpub located at 18650 SE McLoughlin Blvd. in Milwaukie, and it wasn’t long before the chance for a second restaurant “fell into my lap,” as Brian puts it. In 2018 the doors of Coasters Crossing opened for the first time at 1757 Washington St. in Oregon City. The building is a fully restored historic railroad depot that was originally built in the 1800s. It was moved to Portland about 50 years ago before being returned to the area in the 1990s. Even after renovation, the structure retains a historic charm that makes for a perfectly ambient space to enjoy some delicious food and beverages, especially on their fully covered patio.

As far as the food goes, Coasters is perhaps best known for its mouthwatering, hand-formed burgers, one of which is called The Haystack (another tribute to Cannon Beach) and comes topped with Swiss cheese, A-1 steak sauce and frizzled onions. Delicious! Their hand-breaded chicken strips and always-fresh, street-style fish tacos are some other popular choices. They offer a full selection of sandwiches and wraps, seafood, and salads, along with a full bar and expansive beer and wine list. “We’re kind of a seafood, sea-themed brewpub,” Brian explains. Coasters does not do its own brewing, but instead collaborates with the masters at nearby Coin Toss Brewing Co., which is also based in Oregon City. They’re open for lunch and dinner with daily happy hour specials, and even offer a brunch menu on weekends. Scarecrow Cookies Enjoy these Halloween-style cookies that are creatively shaped to look like scarecrows.

INGREDIENTS

1/4 C Betty Crocker™ Ready-To-Spread Vanilla Frosting 10 Creme-Filled Vanilla Sandwich Cookies 5 Baked Whole-Grain Wheat Crackers, Cut In Half 1 Tablespoon Sugar 10 Large Gumdrops 10 Pieces Candy Corn Black Decorating Gel

DIRECTIONS

1. Spread 1 slightly rounded teaspoon frosting on each cookie. For each scarecrow cookie, cut half cracker into shreds with sharp knife; place shreds on 2 sides of each frosted cookie to resemble hair. 2. Sprinkle work surface with sugar. Place 1 gumdrop on its side on sugar; flatten with rolling pin into 1/8-inch-thick triangle. Fold up one edge to form hat brim; place on cookie, trimming to fit if necessary. 3. “That’s one of the things we do that’s outside the norm,” Scott says. “We recycle and donate as much as possible. But it’s really about getting to know the client, listening to what they need and getting it done. We’ll haul darn near anything, whether you’ve got one item or a thousand. We just want the best service in the world for our clients.” The real estate market is red-hot right now, with many folks looking to sell their houses and seek opportunities elsewhere, and with many more eyeing a new home in the Beaver State. “We’re slammed right now,” Scott admits with a laugh. “There’s a lot of demand. HISTORY

Oregon’s First City By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

regon City was not only the first city incorporated in Oregon (actually preceding the state’s founding by 30 years) — it was the first city founded anywhere west of the Rocky Mountains and a main terminus of the Oregon Trail. For thousands of years, the area below Willamette Falls was home to the Clackamas Indians and was an important gathering place and fishing center. Salmon, steelhead, and lamprey in the river attracted Indigenous fishers, including the Multnomah, Wasco, Tualatin, and Molala, who traded with the Clackamas for fish and fishing rights. White fur trappers first explored the area near Willamette Falls in 1811. After the British-Canadian Hudson’s Bay Company in 1824 established Fort Vancouver, about twenty-five miles to the north on the Columbia River, Chief Factor John McLoughlin showed interest in land at the base of the falls.

political roles in the provisional and territorial governments and in the efforts toward statehood. The falls and its proximity to nearby farming settlements in French Prairie also attracted merchants, and their ships carried wheat and other agricultural goods from the Willamette Valley to the Columbia River. The Indigenous population in the area, which had once exceeded 2,000 people, had been reduced to fewer than a hundred, as epidemic diseases such as smallpox and malaria decimated villages and white settlers claimed Indigenous lands. Indigenous leaders signed a treaty in 1856 in which they ceded their homeland to the U.S. government in exchange for protected territory and subsistence rights. Most local Indigenous were relocated to the Grand Ronde Reservation. With the arrival of steamboats on the Columbia River in 1851, Oregon City became a center of transportation and industry for communities above and below Willamette Falls. By the 1860s, Oregon City’s economic focus was on flour, woolen, and paper mills, and wood pulp and paper production would drive the city’s economy for more than a century.

In 1829, McLoughlin claimed two square miles at the site and built three houses and a millrace, establishing the first permanent white settlement in the Willamette Valley. The early town was built on a strip of land between Willamette Falls and Abernethy Creek to the north, the Willamette River to the west, and Singer Hill Bluff, rising one hundred feet or more, to the east. As the main terminus of the Oregon Trail, the region became a hub of American settlement efforts. The 1873 opening of the Willamette Falls Locks at West Linn, across the river from Oregon City, made it safer for commercial and recreational river traffic to navigate the falls. The population had slowly increased to over 4,000 by 1890, and some residents had moved to Singer Hill Bluff, creating neighborhoods at first connected only by traditional Indigenous trails, crude roadways, or stairs. The historical importance of Oregon City prompted residents to support one of the earliest acts of historic preservation in Oregon, when the McLoughlin family house was rescued from demolition in 1909 and moved up to Singer Hill near present-day Seventh and Center Streets. Hundreds of Oregon City sites and structures have since been designated local or national historic sites in recognition of the city’s significance to early settlement, including the Ermatinger House built circa 1843, believed to be the site of the coin toss that named Portland.

The arrival of the automobile significantly changed life in America. The first automobile arrived in Oregon City in 1903 when C.G. Miller established his automobile dealership. His business became known as the MillerParker auto dealership in 1913 and the C.G. Miller Company in 1922.

Oregon City became a center of transportation and industry

Several other dealerships followed and a number of auto-related businesses were established, including garages and service stations. The State Highway Commission was created in 1913 and legislation in 1917 created the State Highway Fund. Soon after, construction on a modern highway system began. Highway 99E, referred to in 1923 as the “Super Highway,” was constructed through downtown Oregon City, eventually connecting with its southern neighbor, Canby. In addition to construction of the highway, street paving improved. Transport of another sort developed in 1913, when the first municipal elevator in Oregon City was constructed. The steel and wood structure stood 89 feet tall and powered by water, making the vertical trip between downtown and the bluff easier for residents. It also supported a continuing trend to locate

The original elevator’s unreliability led to a concrete and steel replacement, powered by electricity, in 1955. The Oregon City elevator is the only outdoor municipal elevator in the United States and the only to be designated a “vertical street.” In 1922, the now-iconic arched bridge over the Willamette River, designed by the Oregon State Highway Division’s chief engineer, Conde B. McCullough, replaced a wooden span built in 1888 to connect Oregon City to West Linn. After the construction of a new fire station on the bluff, a new city hall was built downtown in 1925. Commercial development was strong following World War I and a number of new store and office buildings were constructed downtown and existing buildings remodeled. Growth continued through the Great Depression, but at a slightly slower rate. Although the Great Depression was not as devastating in Oregon as it was in other parts of the country, its effects were felt locally. Oregon City was the recipient of a variety of funds from federal programs, many of which resulted in new improvements in the downtown area. A new Clackamas County Courthouse was constructed in 1936-1937 with assistance from the Works Progress Administration. The highway underpass and Singer Creek Falls and Steps were also constructed in 1936 with WPA funding.

With improved roads and new trucking technology, the timber and wood

products industry experienced great expansion. The Willamette and Crown mills merged in 1914 to become The Crown Willamette Pulp and Paper Company. In 1937, Anthony Zellerbach took control of several mills, including Crown Willamette, which became Crown Zellerbach. World War II brought an end to the Great Depression and ushered in a fully modern period. Although growth and development was slowed during the war, the period following the war was one of substantial expansion in Oregon City, as it was in most communities around the country. The timber and wood industry recovered from the Great Depression slump and was restored to its position as the state’s leading industry with the building boom that followed the war. New residential neighborhoods expanded eastward to the third terrace above the river as newfound prosperity allowed many to buy their own homes. Commercial growth in the downtown area continued, although only a handful of new buildings were constructed. Much of the development involved the creation of new “modern” businesses, which opened their doors in existing buildings. The pulp and paper industries began to decline in the 1970s, in part because of changes in timber management, but also because of concerns over the pollutants that paper mills were dumping into the rivers and air. The Blue Heron paper mill, the last working mill in Oregon City, closed in 2011. The mill site, on land where the McLoughlin house once stood at the base of Willamette Falls, is now owned by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community. As of 2021, the Tribes were part of the Willamette Falls Legacy Project, an effort to restore access to the river while also recognizing the cultural and historic significance of the site.
