Oregon City Together names community prevention champions

Oregon City Together (OCT) recently named three recipients of its first-time Community Prevention Champion Award. The new award recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to preventing youth substance use in Oregon City.

factors with city and county elected officials. He volunteers his time to encourage limiting dispensaries and using a percentage of marijuana retail taxes to mitigate the negative impact of legalization on the city’s youth.

Oregon City Together is a community coalition of concerned parents, youth, community and school leaders, and representatives from law enforcement, faith-based groups, organizations serving youth, neighborhoods and government agencies. It is the only organization in Oregon City focusing solely on youth drug use prevention. “Prevention is essential to all youth having healthy futures. We are very pleased to acknowledge people in our community who are doing this important work. “ Paige Hirt, a licensed professional counselor and a certified alcohol and drug counselor, co-founded the Oregon City Together Coalition. She invested uncountable hours building the coalition and bringing her expert focus on prevention. Paige has educated thousands of students and their parents during the past 10 years. The coalition today reflects her commitment, guidance and leadership. Ravin Lopez, a youth mentor, has worked in Oregon City middle schools through several programs at Northwest Family Services. Ravin works with at-risk students to increase protective factors in their lives and help them stay in school. An outstanding mentor like Ravin reduces the risk of substance use for vulnerable youth. Through her work, she has helped countless youth connect with mental health services, and drug and alcohol support.

Brian Shaw, a long-time Oregon City resident, has been a member of Oregon City Together for five years. Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.

Easter Bunny

According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!

Easter Eggs

From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Easter Candy

Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter. Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

or the multitude of travelers crossing the Interstate Bridge between Oregon and Washington, Jantzen Beach is simply a vast spread of shopping centers, restaurants, and hotels clustered on Hayden Island as you zoom past. Many will have a vague notion of the area being associated with the Jantzen brand of swimwear, but with each passing year the memories of the iconic Jantzen Beach Amusement Park dwindle into obscurity. Back in the day, hailed as the “Coney Island of the West,” Hayden Island was once home to the largest amusement park in the nation—a massive park encompassing 123 acres that was patronized by over 30 million people during its 42 years of operation. It all began in 1927 when William A. Logus and Leo F. Smith purchased forty acres on Hayden Island from the Portland Electric Power Company. Shortly thereafter, Logus and Smith launched the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, named after Carl Jantzen of swimwear fame; along with a number of Jantzen executives and several prominent members of the community, Carl R12

Jantzen underwrote the entire $500,000 project. Jantzen and his fellow investors envisioned the park as a showcase to promote swimming as a public activity, which later included the company’s sponsorship of national “Learn to Swim” weeks throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. With swimming as a primary focus of the park, four gigantic swimming pools were constructed as well as a natatorium (an indoor swimming facility). The Jantzen Beach Amusement Park officially opened on May 26, 1928. In addition to the swimming pools, the park also featured a number of popular rides including the Big Dipper Roller Coaster and a custom-made carousel. Constructed by C.W. Parker, the “American Amusement King,” the carousel was hand-crafted in 1921 and first operated at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. After surviving a fire, the carousel was later shipped to Portland where it became a highlight attraction at Jantzen Beach. Of the various rides created by Parker, only the carousel survives

today. It resides in the custodianship of Restore Oregon, an organization with plans to reassemble and install the carousel in a permanent new home that will “serve as a new attraction for our region.” On a spooky note, the carousel was for years the source of ghost stories. A number of youngsters, as well as maintenance workers, claimed to have witnessed ghostly children on or about the ride. The Big Dipper Roller Coaster, designed by Carl Phare, took center stage as the featured attraction of the park. The “Dipper,” a gigantic amusement construction, boasted to be the largest roller coaster west of Chicago, traveling 3800 feet per minute with 14 dips, 5 of them in excess of 35 feet, and the steepest dip which plunged riders 70 feet straight down. For the more faint of heart, the park offered a Kiddy Dipper roller coaster, and included arcade games and picnic grounds. One of the biggest draws of the park was the Golden Canopy Ballroom, which became Portland’s premier dancehall during the 1930s and ‘40s. In 1942, Clara Shepard of the Spectator newspaper wrote: “If a young man about town says dancin’ to a girl, he might as well say Jantzen Beach at the same time…for they are synonymous as far as she is concerned. The Golden Canopy Ballroom features the sweetest swing in the country every night of the park’s season, with a parade of big name dance bands moving across its board…” Shepard’s description was no exaggeration. World famous musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong performed at Jantzen Beach to the delight of thousands who flocked to the park for unforgettable nights of top shelf entertainment. By the late 1940s, however, Jantzen Beach was in decline. Vanport, a town created during World War I to house workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver (hence the name Vanport), was located at today’s Delta Park area and provided one of Jantzen Beach’s primary revenue sources. As the second largest city in Oregon at the time (by population), the residents of Vanport frequented Jantzen Beach for its wide variety of entertainment right in their own “backyard.” After the Vanport Flood of 1948, which effectively destroyed the majority of the town, and the

decline in population after the war, this important revenue stream dried up for the once thriving park. Changes in the society at large also contributed to the decline of Jantzen Beach. While television rose to prominence as America’s go-to entertainment, people frequently opted to stay home rather than venture out during their leisure time. When they did venture out, the boundless freedom of the automobile—now a staple of American society—offered endless opportunities for recreational activities. The allure of the traditional amusement park had lost its luster. In 1960, a fire broke out in the Tunnel of Love, resulting in its destruction as well as that of the Fun House and the Dutch Mill. In the face of incidents and declining attendance, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park closed its doors after Labor Day weekend in 1970. Following the closure of the amusement park, Jantzen Beach Center, a large shopping complex, eventually arose, and for some years housed the historic C.W. Parker carousel, which may operate again one day should Restore Oregon succeed in constructing a new home for it. The pumping system for the swimming pools of the old amusement park are still in use today, providing drinking water for residents of the Hayden Island area. And wooden remnants of the Big Dipper Roller Coaster live on at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on S.E. 28th St. in Portland, where they have been repurposed as tables, as well as the bar itself. So the next time you’re caught in traffic on I-5 near Jantzen Beach, allow yourself to daydream a little about the “Coney Island of the West,” that famous amusement park on the Columbia from days gone by that brought joy to millions, and memories to last a lifetime, for those fortunate enough to share in the experience.

n any town, few public institutions are more beloved, more celebrated, more vital to the health and overall well-being of the community than the local library. Perhaps only the wastewater treatment plant comes close...and for very different reasons. Oregon City has been home to a public library since the 1840s, though the library has taken on many different forms — and many different locations — over the years. The first public library in Clackamas County was established in Willamette Falls — or as we know it today, Oregon City — in late 1842. It was given a mouthful of a name — the “Multnomah

Circulating Library” — and was stocked with 300 volumes. This first library was a subscription library, with members paying $5 for the privilege of borrowing materials. T he f i rst l ibr a r ia n wa s Wi l l ia m H. Gr ay, a pione er politician and historian of the Oregon Country who wore a magnificently long, white beard and later wrote the evenlonger tome A History of Oregon, 1792-1849, of which a critic once uncharitably said, “It would require a book as large as Gray’s to correct all of Gray’s mistakes. It has three faults: lack of arrangement, acrimonious partisanship, and disregard for truth.” Gray had come to Oregon as a lay member of the doomed Spalding-Whitman missionary group, which Philander and Anna Lee, who later helped found the neighboring city of Canby, would also meet on their way down the Oregon Trail in 1847. Gray had resigned his post in 1842 to join the staff of the Oregon Institute, the first school built for European Americans west of Missouri, and the Oregon City library. Sadly, mere weeks after the Lees left the Whitmans’ company in 1847, they would be killed by a group of Cayuse warriors who blamed them for an outbreak of measles that devastated their tribe. The killings sparked a conflict between the settlers and the Cayuse that became known as the Cayuse War. The library’s 300 books were likely kept at the City Hotel, just south of the mint which produced five and ten dollar tokens known as “Beaver Money,” the short-lived currency commissioned by the Provisional Government of Oregon. The Multnomah Circulating Library was formally incorporated on August 19, 1845, the second corporation to form under the provisional government of the burgeoning state.

Yet this effort did not stick. Between the 1850s and the beginning of the 20th century, many groups embarked on creating reading rooms and library associations for the Oregon City community. Some of these efforts were successful for a time, including the Free Reading Room which was opened on October 14, 1892, and housed in a one-story building rented from George Harding, a prominent druggist who married Jennie Barlow, the granddaughter of legendary pioneer Sam Barlow whose eponymous Barlow Road marked the end of the Oregon Trail. However, by the end of the century, the reading room had become a “hobo resort,” containing more dust than books. Another strong effort was launched to establish a public library in Oregon City in 1906. This attempt seemed to have enough drive to realize its dream, but after establishing that the city would manage the library, it would be several years before the City Council actually took action to establish said library. No real progress was made until 1909 when a group of citizens created the “Oregon City Library Association,” which raised money to support a reading room from membership dues set at $12 per year, payable monthly. In addition, the managers of the Willamette and Crown Mills, recognizing the value of a l ibr a r y to t hei r workers, each agreed to prov ide generou s monthly support.

the “Carnegie Formula,” which stipulated that the city must provide a site and annual funds in the amount of at least 10% of the cost of the building. Oregon City submitted an application for a sum of $12,500, the estimated cost of the building plus furniture.

Mrs. Edit h Truscott, of Jennings Lodge, was selected to the position of “house attendant.” The Reading Room opened on December 13, 1909, to the music of the Concert Band with 60 people in attendance. The location on the third f loor of the Masonic Temple was made even more accessible by the modern elevator erected in this 1907 building. By 1910, city residents had agreed to support the public library with a special library tax. By 1911, several libraries in Oregon had been built using funds from the legendary steel king, Andrew Carnegie, and

In 1912, work began on the new Carnegie Library in the Seventh Street Park using a design by E. E. McClaran, of Portland, which did indeed receive the seal of approval from Mr. Carnegie. Robert Shelley, also of Portland, was retained as the builder. After many changes to the plans and slowdowns which caused the need for the library to temporarily relocate to the basement of the Masonic Building, the building was finally completed. On June 21, 1913, the library was officially opened for business. For the event, fine music was provided by Mrs. DesLarzes, a piano solo was played by Miss Grace, and singing was provided by Oscar Woodfin. Speakers included Joseph E. Hedges, president of the library board, Miss Marvin, state librarian from Salem, and B. T. McBain, of the Crown Columbia Paper Company. The original Carnegie facility served as the city library until 1995. It had been determined that the 6,500 square foot facility was no longer large enough to serve the needs of the Oregon City community, and the library moved into a temporary leased facility in a former hardware store in Danielson’s Hilltop Mall, while officials canvassed for a new, suitable location.

After more than 15 years, it was decided that the best location for the new library was the original Carnegie Library — expanded and remodeled. In November 2008, voters of a proposed Clackamas County Library District approved the district and agreed to pay for library services, providing stable operating funds for the libraries of Clackamas County, including Oregon City and Canby. On June 19, 2013, the same night Mayor Doug Neeley read the proclamation celebrating the Carnegie Building’s 100th anniversary, the City Commission designated this site as the home of the new expanded library. On May 20, 2014, voters of Oregon City approved Measure 3-435, authorizing up to $6 million

in bonds for capital improvements, including a 15,000-square-foot addition to the original Carnegie building. Groundbreaking for the addition took place on August 8, 2015. The Library remained in the Carnegie building during construction, which took place right behind it. On July 27, 2016, library services moved to the addition and took up operations in the new building. Contractors then renovated the Carnegie building. The new and improved Oregon City Library held its grand opening on October 15, 2016, and has remained one of the growing community’s most beloved historical, educational, and cultural centers ever since.

Lemon Blueberry Cake This moist blueberry lemon cake contains three lemon cake layers with blueberries and is frosted with a refreshing whipping cream and cream cheese frosting, which again has blueberries and lemons. INGREDIENTS

CAKE 1 (16.25 ounce) package white cake mix 1 ¼ cups water 3 egg whites 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons lemon extract

FROSTING 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened ¾ cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract FILLING 1/3 cup blueberry pie filling

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 8-inch pans. 2. Beat cake mix, water, egg whites, vegetable oil, and lemon extract together in a bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until batter is well combined, about 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Beat cream in a chilled bowl using an electric mixer until soft peaks are almost forming into stiff peaks; place bowl in refrigerator. 5. Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture. 6. Place 1 cake on a plate; top with blueberry pie filling. Place second cake atop blueberry filling. Generously frost cake with whipped cream cheese frosting.
