ris Widiatnoko has been in the restaurant business since 2001, so by the time he arrived at Odd Moe’s in Newberg about a year and a half ago, he’d already developed some ideas about pizza. “People will say, ‘Pizza is a fast food,’ but it’s not, you know?” he says. “We make these to order, just like the customer wants it. We make them from scratch, we make the dough fresh every day, we cut the produce every day, washed by hand, cut by hand.” Odd Moe’s has been a go-to pizzeria in the Willamette Valley for two decades. The first store opened in May 1999 in McMinnville, and the company later expanded to Salem, Canby, Keizer, Hillsboro and Newberg. Widiatnoko and his wife Elizabeth have been keeping busy in Newberg since Covid-19 has shut many restaurants down. “Actually,” he says, “we got busier,” because in addition to the sit-down eatery, Odd Moe’s also delivers. 6  Woodburn To Advertise Community With Us, Advantage Call 503.825.2111 Magazine | To Advertise: 503.825.2111

At first glance, the menu may seem small until you really dive into it and see the astonishing variety of toppings, crusts, and sides available. You can build your own, which means the options really are endless, or go with any of a dozen house pizza selections. Some favorites include The Lineman, which offers a delicious pile of tasty traditional toppings like Italian sausage, mushrooms, red onions, and more on a crust that finds a happy balance between crispy and chewy. There’s also some imaginative fare like The Borg, a “classic veggie” pizza, but with a red sauce; or The Green Monster, which offers artichoke hearts, spinach, tomatoes, chopped garlic and a couple cheeses with a zesty pesto sauce. Those with dietary restrictions may take heart; Odd Moe’s has vegan and gluten-free diners covered. “We were one of the first pizza places to do a gluten-free crust,” he says. “Those have been a hit, and some people don’t realize it’s gluten free. It looks and tastes like a ‘real’ crust.” The beverage menu, meanwhile, offers more than twenty varieties of beer and craft cider, from familiar mainstream brands to local microbrews. In every town where Odd Moes has established itself, the restaurant gets involved in the community, and the Newberg branch is no exception. Widiatnoko is especially proud of the restaurant’s sponsorship of the football and basketball teams at George Fox College, where they sometimes provide lunch for players along with selling pizza by the slice at home games. Odd Moe’s Pizza is located at 2515 Portland Road in Newberg. To order, call 971-281-8987, or order online at www.oddmoes.com/odd-moes-pizza-in-newberg/.

Newberg Old Fashioned Festival

AN ORAL HISTORY As Told To David Bates by Festival Chairman Brian Love

T

he Newberg Old Fashioned Festival, one of many smalltown summer festivals in Yamhill County, is among the casualties of the COVID19 pandemic. Festival Chairman Brian Love announced on Facebook in May that the event scheduled for July 22-25 has been canceled; a decision, he said, that “was not made lightly.” “At the onset of the COVID-19 virus, we were hopeful that the situation might resolve itself by late July,” Love said. “The health and safety of our community, sponsors, attendees, vendors, staff and volunteers is our top priority and we decided the risk of holding this great summertime event is too great!” Love was born and raised in Newberg, so his knowledge of the festival goes back to childhood. After the decision to cancel, we spoke with him about the festival’s history going back to the mid-1930s, when it was reportedly called the Newberg Berrian Festival. What follows is a series of oral snapshots spanning Love’s involvement, edited for length and clarity. And finally, a note of what’s to come in 2021! “There was a Berrian Festival. There were a lot of berry fields around Newberg. It was huge. You had black caps and strawberries and boysenberries and who

10  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

knows what else back then. I actually have some of the old banners they used to hang across First Street that say “Berrian Festival.” And we still put them up -- not downtown but down at the festival grounds. It’s important to show the history of Newberg and where we came from. “The Berrian festival used to take place in early June. I remember that. I was in the kids parade. My grandfather was a Rotarian, and they hosted a breakfast. My brother and I used to decorate a wagon and we would walk through the parade advertising their Rotary Breakfast. I actually had a broken arm one year, and we had a sign on it that said, ‘Even good with a broken arm.’ “The Berrian Festival went away, so that’s why the Chamber of Commerce stepped in. There were several transitions (before that). There was a Farm-a-roo, there was bicentennial days - that was in 1976. There were a few little things. “It was initiated as a Chamber of Commerce function, and my uncle, Al Blodgett, was heavily involved in the chamber. I’m pretty sure that’s how I ended up having a

pickup there when I was in high school. I had an old flatbed pickup and I had a Dixieland jazz band on the back. I remember Dick Elliott was the band instructor in Newberg for years, he’s retired now, but he put together this band. It was three guys, maybe four. I was asked if I could do it. So that’s how I was in the first parade. We were going thirty miles an hour down First Street because you were only allowed to be in one lane, and normal traffic was still going around us, so it was definitely a raw first year. I wish I had pictures, but I don’t. “It was Old Fashioned Festival Days under the chamber, and then it got converted to just the Old Fashioned Festival. It didn’t stay under the chamber for a long time. We’ve slowly evolved into more things. Now, there’s a car show and all that kind of stuff. I believe it was the late 1980s when it was switched into its own entity and did its own thing. “It’s probably no different in McMinnville or in Carlton or Yamhill. You see the same people every year, and that might be the only time you see them, you know? That’s what we want in our festival. It’s been around a long time. A lot of

it hasn’t changed. We have an elephant ear vendor, and he’s been here every year. People come and they’ll wait two hours in line to get an elephant year. And our sound guy has been with us almost the whole time, bringing the speakers and helping with the stage and helping all these years. “It’s not that we don’t want people from outside the community, but this festival is put on for the community by the community from the business community. Our focus isn’t to draw in people from outside as much as what we can do to make sure we’re spending our money on events for people in our community. I mean, there are other festivals in Newberg. The Camelia Festival, for instance. That’s not really a community festival. It’s put on in our community, and it’s definitely Newberg-driven, but it draws from all over the place.” “A few years ago, we were faced with some financial challenges and we weren’t sure if we could pull it off. I went to the volunteer

fire department, because they were disbanding and disbursing some funds to charitable organizations, so I asked for $5,000. We had a couple meetings, and in the last meeting I met with their executive board, made my proposal, and went on my way. A couple hours later I got a phone call to come back. So I get there, and there’s only a couple of them at that point. They said they’d agreed to give us some funds and handed me a check. I didn’t look at it. So we’re still talking, and they’re like, ‘Aren’t you going to look at the check?’ That’s when I looked, and it was for ten thousand dollars. That’s when emotions overcame me. “It is important for us to make sure that when the Old-Fashioned Festival returns July 22-25, 2021 that it does so in a way that’s safe and that all of our attendees feel secure,” Love concluded in his announcement. “We will spend the next year carefully planning on how to hold a successful event in a post-pandemic world. We look forward to the 40th Newberg Old Fashioned Festival with the theme, ‘The Best is Yet To Come!’”

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Encore Home Furnishings by David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer Thousands of customers over the years have come to appreciate Encore’s mission, which is to make furniture buying, whether it’s for a first apartment or a dream home, an affordable and stress-free experience. The staff, including three of Nikki’s children, are focused on providing customers with the highest quality of service. You’ll find brand name products priced at 40 to 80 percent off retail, and the store offers financing options and layaway, delivery within 250 miles of McMinnville, and an online database that allows you to search the entire inventory.

W

hen you v isit Encore Home Furnishings in McMinnville’s Bunn Village, you’re look ing at 15 years worth of success stories, dedicated customer service, and unparalleled experience in the furniture business. It started out as a “fun project” for Nikki Elliott, who teamed up with her mother-in-law one summer to fix up and resell furniture out of her garage. The idea took off, and soon she was renting space in an antique mall. Customers responded so enthusiastically that she opened a small store in Bunn Village and found a successful model to bridge the gap between inexpensive thrift store furniture and more costly brand names. A decade and a half later, Encore Home Furnishings has a crew of more than two dozen people and eight buildings, including two showrooms, totalling 25,000 square feet with a diverse and competitively-priced inventory that is constantly changing. “Our inventory changes on a daily basis, so our floor is constantly changing,” Nikki says. “Most stores set up their inventory once a year and just change out a room every two to six months. We rearrange areas in our showrooms two or three times a week!”

14  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

For those not familiar with the terminology, the broad range of “factory seconds” you’ll find in the showrooms includes pieces ranging from no visible imperfections to items with a small scratch to items with obvious damage. “We try to disclose any blemishes on our price tags,” says Nikki. Encore also partners with NW Bedding, Modus Furniture, Mohawk Rugs, MLily, Emerald Home Furnishings, Southern Motion, Glideaway, PureCare, Coaster Furniture, Acme Furniture, and many others to provide high-quality, brand new items for their showrooms as well. Nikki is grateful to the community that has helped to make her store such a resounding success, and she gives back generously. “We have donated furniture to nearly every school in the county,” she says. “We’ve also worked closely with Habitat for Humanity, Juliette’s House, & the See Ya Later Foundation, as well as various churches & non-profits, organizations helping those dealing with abusive situations and illnesses. Over the years we have also sponsored county-wide youth sports teams.” Encore Home Furnishings is located at 2730 Bunn Road in McMinnville. Hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 1-5 pm. For more information, please call 503-474-1937 or 866-665-1937, or visit them online at www.EncoreHomeFurnishings.com. 

Name: Robert Wilde, DDS

THE DOCTOR

Occupation: Dentist Years Serving Newberg: 14

by David Bates | photo by Teresa Tingley receptionists and a hygienist. “I really like working with people,” he said. “People keep it interesting, and I definitely like repairing teeth.” Since starting his practice, the technology used in dental offices has evolved. “When I first got out of school, we were doing a lot of gold crowns, and porcelain baked onto gold crowns,” he says. “Now, the ceramics have taken over and we do very little gold anymore. The ceramics are just as strong, and they look very natural, tooth-colored, and they’re made with a computer, so the accuracy is better.”

Y

ou’ll find Dr. Robert Wilde at Associated Westside Dental in downtown Newberg, where he’s owned his practice since 2006. Dr. Wilde is a native Oregonian, having grown up in Roseburg. His parents weren’t doctors, but he’s not the first in his family to pursue medicine as a vocation. His brother William, older by just two years, led the way. Wilde liked what he saw and decided he’d do the same. “My brother is a dentist, and he made it look easy,” Wilde says, laughing. “We had a lot in common.” At that time, it took eight years to become a dentist. Wilde did his undergraduate work at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, then studied dentistry at Oregon Health & Science University. Dentistry has residencies and internships available for new doctors starting out, but Wilde (unlike his brother, who did a residency in the Air Force) opened a clinic in Raleigh Hills right out of school. Then in 2006, Newberg dentist Dr. Ron Hatfield put his clinic up for sale, and Wilde decided that was an opportunity he wanted to take. It allowed him to begin his Newberg career with an established clientele. The clinic is on the southeast corner of North Washington Street and Highway 99W a couple blocks west of the Newberg Public Library. Wilde shares the building with a podiatrist, and he has a staff of five: two assistants, two

Of course, Dr. Wilde encourages daily brushing and flossing so patients don’t get to the point where they need a crown. He also urges patients to consider diet. “Soda can be really rough on teeth, so we try to educate people about that.” Above all, he wants to remind everyone to come in regularly for check-ups and cleanings! “If people don’t see the dentist regularly, the sad thing is, they don’t just pay for it with money. They pay for it with teeth,” he says. “It’s pretty difficult to replace a tooth sometimes. People talk about implants, but not too many get them. We try to save people from dentures when we can.” Associated Westside Dental is back open for a full range of services. In accordance with recommended safety measures, patients are screened before coming in, and will have their temperature taken before the examination or procedure begins.

Associated Westside Dental is located at 201 North Washington Street, Newberg. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Fridays 9 am -Noon. For more information or to make an appointment, call 503-538-2560 or visit online at www.dentistnewbergor.com.

WHAT TO DO IN A DENTAL EMERGENCY

I

t’s important to take action quickly in emergency dental situations. Below are a few tips on how to handle tooth injuries and pains: KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH Find the tooth immediately and place it in a glass of slightly salted tap water or cold milk without first cleaning or scrubbing it. Take the tooth to your dentist as soon as possible, preferably within 30 minutes of the injury, and he or she may be able to replace it in your mouth. BROKEN TOOTH Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and soothe the tooth. Place an ice pack on the cheek nearest the injury to help keep the swelling down. See your dentist as soon as possible. TOOTHACHES Keep food away from the tooth that hurts. Rinse your mouth with warm water after eating and floss your teeth. If your jaw is swollen, place an ice pack on the cheek that hurts. Do not put heat or aspirin on the painful areas. Toothaches can have a number of causes, such as an unnoticed cavity, gum disease, a crack in a tooth, or a new filling that doesn’t fit right. See the dentist as soon as possible, particularly if swelling is present. MOUTH SORES Avoid acidic foods, such as oranges and pineapples, which can “sting” the sores. Often, sores in the mouth are canker sores, which are small ulcers. Call your dentist if your mouth sores persist for more than two weeks. If you notice any lumps or white patches in or around your mouth, you should see your dentist immediately, as they may indicate a more serious problem. Whenever you have a tooth injury or pain, it’s important to seek care from your dentist as soon as possible. Keep your dentist’s phone number handy! STEVE’S

AUTO SERVICE

G

iven how technologically complex some cars are these days, one can be forgiven for being a tad wary of the aftermarket, but Steve Drew, who has owned Steve’s Auto Service on the east end of downtown Newberg since 2001, puts customers at ease.

vehicles. “I had to learn way more and be way more versatile and spend more time learning about cars when I left the dealership because I work on everything,” he says. “So actually, the truth is, the best technicians really aren’t at the dealerships; they’re on the outside, in the aftermarket.”

“Before I worked in a dealership,” says Steve, “I always thought those were the premiere technicians, that if you were a dealer tech, you were top notch. Actually, the opposite is true.”

Steve has been forced to lay off a few people since the COVID19 pandemic began, but he still has a crew of more than half a dozen, and has cut back only one hour a day. They work out of a shop adorned with some spectacular artwork produced by George Fox University students. The east-facing wall of the building greets motorists heading west into downtown with a mural depicting a series of clasped hands that symbolize gratitude and giving. “I have grown to love it,” he says.

Steve has been working on cars since he was 15, working his way through hot rods and motorcycles before a stint in the military steered him toward a few years of electrical engineering training. Raised in Southern California, he spent some time working in the tire industry before moving his family (he and his wife will celebrate their 30th anniversary this year) up to Oregon. As Steve says, having once worked in a dealership was part of the experience that drove him to start his own shop. “Even though my passion is fixing cars, I never liked being in an environment where I didn’t like the way the customers were treated,” he said. “Looking back, I always disagreed with how people were treated in this industry, the miscommunication, a lack of empathy, really a lack of responsibility in shops, which I think is what causes most of the bad reputation that auto repair gets. That’s what drove me to do this, to be more in control of the customer experience,” he says. While it’s difficult to pry schematic information loose from manufacturers, Steve said online databases have made life easier for independent car technicians like himself. “In the mid-1990s, it was horrible,” he said. “The Internet has helped us immensely, for sure.” What sets him apart from a dealer tech is that he spends a tremendous amount of time researching all types of 26  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Though Steve also recently opened a second shop in downtown McMinnville, he spends most of his time in Newberg, and values his connection with the local community. “I’m blessed to have great managers in both stores,” he says. “I don’t worry about them.” If you are in need of some top-notch care for your vehicle from professionals who take pride in their quality work and excellent customer service, give Steve’s Auto Service a call! Steve’s Auto Service is located at 112 North Meridian Street in Newberg. The shop is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Phone: 503-554-1778. ■
