COFFEE CAT COFFEEHOUSE
Art of the Brew By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Kara Langley Photography
I
think we can all agree that there is an art to brewing the perfect cup of coffee. Even more so, I would suggest there is also an art to constructing the perfect coffee shop: warm, inviting atmosphere; fast and friendly service; consistently great food and drink. It’s not an easy balance to strike. And let’s be honest, we are all so particular when it comes to calling a coffee shop our own. We are illogically protective and possessive of them, like our favorite indie bands who we love but don’t want anyone else to know about. We treat these places like an office or a second home. For those living in or around Newberg, or even for those driving through, there is only one coffee shop to call your own, and that is Coffee Cat Coffeehouse at 107 S. College St. Owner/operator, Tiffany Olea, purchased the business 4 years ago and has done a complete overhaul of the entire place. If you haven’t been back for awhile, do yourself a favor and stop by. There has clearly been a lot of heart and soul put into revamping almost every aspect of the business, starting with the coffee itself. Tiffany is a strong believer in buying high quality ingredients and whenever possible, buying local. So her first order of business was switching to Flag & Wire Coffee Co. for her beans. Next, she lowered the prices from the previous owner to be more competitive in the market. Then she standardized and stripped the menu down to focus on the “classics.” She still has an amazing array of signature and seasonal drinks of course, but now with a far more sophisticated presentation. Favorite drinks that people can’t get enough of are her Bee’s Knees, an iced-tea drink made with Smith Teamaker (another local Portland company!) Mint Tea, lavender and honey, and her entire line of mocha coffee drinks. Her mochas are not made with
6 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
syrup! Instead she uses a powdered mix which gives them a smoother texture and creamier consistency. And for a special treat, ask for iced coffee cubes in your iced drinks. No more watered down coffee as you reach the bottom of the cup! Equally delicious are her breakfast foods and baked goods which Tiffany makes fresh from scratch every day! Cinnamon rolls and Triple Berry rolls are her biggest sellers, but everything is fantastic and again, fresh. The one thing she doesn’t make are the bagels, but those come from another local company, Donut Land. And for all you Celiacs and gluten-sensitive coffee drinkers lamenting over the fact that nobody carries gluten-free pastries, lament no more! Tiffany always has a great selection of gluten-free options, including her amazing cinnamon rolls.
And of course there’s the shop itself: warm, inviting, displaying a wonderful selection of art from local artists who work with her on consignment. This is the perfect place to meet a friend for breakfast, for a cup, or even to set up shop for the day and work on completing that novel. Locally owned and operated, by someone who understands the art of constructing both the perfect cup o’ joe and the
perfect coffeehouse, Coffee Cat Coffeehouse will be your new favorite. Come down today and meet Tiffany, the DaVinci of divine brew and baked goods! They’re located at 107 S. College St. in Newberg. Check out their menu or order online at coffeecatcoffeehouse.square.site, or reach them at 503-538-5384 or coffeecatcoffeehouse107@gmail.com.

SEASONAL SPECIAL
ANIMAGIC
The Surprising History of Rudolph By Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer
Y
ou’ve probably never heard of Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment, but you’ve certainly seen their abundant and classic Christmas movies. The most popular stop-motion Christmas movies they produced were Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town (1970), The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974), The First Christmas (1975), Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (1976), and Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July (1979). While far from being new, these heartwarming movies continue to charm new generations every holiday season. First known as Videocraft International, Ltd., the company was founded by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass in New York City in 1960. Most of the Rankin / Bass animations, including their “Animagic” stop-motion movies, were produced in Tokyo, Japan. In fact, most of the studio’s animation was outsourced to Japanese companies like MOM Production, Eiken, Toei Animation, Mushi Productions, and Topcraft. Rankin / Bass was one of the first American film studios to outsource low-budget animated television and movies to foreign animation studios. Throughout the 1960s, the Animagic movies were spearheaded by stop-motion animator Tadahito Mochinaga at MOM Production. Rankin / Bass remained successful for many years thanks to their animated holiday specials which aired for American television. In 1964, the company produced a special for NBC and sponsored by General Electric: a stop-motion animated adaptation of Robert L. May’s 1939 story “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” which featured the 1949 song it inspired, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” written by May’s brother-in-law, Johnny Marks. With American actor Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman and narrator, with an original score by Marks himself, Rudolph became one of the most popular and longest-running Christmas specials in television history, airing with NBC until 1972 when it 10 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
moved to CBS. After its last series output, Rankin / Bass shut down its production company on March 4, 1987. The look and style of the films has heavily influenced more modern holiday classics such as Elf (2003), as well as being parodied by Saturday Night Live and South Park. The figurines featured in Rudolph were created by Japanese puppet-maker Ichiro Komuro for the fan favorite stop-motion movie. “These were hand-made. They weren’t toys,” pop culture memorabilia appraiser Simeon Lipman told PBS in 2006. “They had mechanisms to make them move, to make them come almost alive. No mass manufacturer of toys, especially in the 1960s, made things like that. It was made to be on film.” The 6-inch-tall Rudolph and 11-inchtall Santa were made of wood, wire, cloth, and leather, with Rudolph’s nose lighting up and Santa’s beard made from yak hair. Sometime in the 70s, the puppets came to Barbara Adams, a secretary at Rankin / Bass. She used the figurines to decorate her Christmas tree, and let her nieces and nephews play with them like toys. Later, most of the figurines ended up tragically melting in a hot attic, presumably Barbara’s. Her nephew brought the survivors, Santa and Rudolph, to the Antiques Roadshow, where they were valued at $8,000 to $10,000. A toy collector, Keith Kriess, purchased the puppets for an undisclosed amount, but much more than that appraisal. He then spent $4,000 to have them meticulously restored. Before that, Rudolph had lost his nose, and Santa was missing half his yak-hair mustache. Santa and Rudolph were successfully restored, according to Peter Lutrario, who purchased them from Keith for an undisclosed amount. In late 2020, Peter sold them to an anonymous auction bidder, who won them for a whopping $368,000! Although the current whereabouts of the figurines are unknown, we can be sure that Rudolph and Santa are alive and well in their Rankin/Bass stop-motion movies, emblazoning television screens each December all across the world. Magical and heartwarming to this day, these Christmas films pioneered holiday television specials, forever changed the world of animation, and continue to capture our imagination and hearts.

ris Widiatnoko has been in the restaurant business since 2001, so by the time he arrived at Odd Moe’s in Newberg about 3 years ago, he’d already developed some ideas about pizza. “People will say, ‘Pizza is a fast food,’ but it’s not, you know?” he says. “We make these to order, just like the customer wants it. We make them from scratch, we make the dough fresh every day, we cut the produce every day, washed by hand, cut by hand.”
pizza, but with a red sauce; or The Green Monster, which offers artichoke hearts, spinach, tomatoes, chopped garlic, and a variety of cheeses with a zesty pesto sauce. Those with dietary restrictions may take heart; Odd Moe’s has vegan and gluten-free diners covered. “We were one of the first pizza places to do a gluten-free crust,” Aris says. “Those have been a hit, and some people don’t realize it’s gluten free. It looks and tastes like a ‘real’ crust.” The beverage menu, meanwhile, offers more than twenty varieties of beer and craft cider, from familiar mainstream brands to local microbrews. In every town where Odd Moes has established itself, the restaurant gets involved in the community, and the Newberg branch is no exception. Widiatnoko is especially proud of the restaurant’s sponsorship of the football and basketball teams at George Fox University, where they sometimes provide lunch
Odd Moe’s has been a go-to pizzeria in the Willamette Valley for two decades. The first store opened in May 1999 in McMinnville, and the company later expanded to Salem, Canby, Keizer, Hillsboro and Newberg. Widiatnoko and his wife Elizabeth have been keeping busy in Newberg ever since. At first glance, the menu may seem small until you really dive into it and see the astonishing variety of toppings, crusts, and sides available. You can build your own, which means the options really are endless, or go with any of a dozen house pizza selections. Some favorites include The Lineman, which offers a delicious pile of tasty traditional toppings like Italian sausage, mushrooms, red onions, more on a crust that finds a happy balance between crispy and chewy. There’s also some imaginative fare like The Borg, a “classic veggie” 12 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Keep Holiday Smiles

Avoid tooth damage and decay caused by wine, sweets and stress by making oral health a priority. By Robert Preidt, HealthDay News

he busy holiday season may disrupt many people’s daily routines, but at this time of year it is especially important to remember to look after your teeth, an expert advises. “Holiday get-togethers tend to lead people to consume sugary treats and drink alcoholic beverages more than usual,” Dr. George Shepley, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry, said in an academy news release. “Additionally, with their busy schedules and increased stress levels, I’ve noticed that my patients’ oral hygiene suffers. They forget the most basic of oral hygiene tasks that can counteract the effects of sugary snacks and drinks,” he pointed out. Shepley offers suggestions on a number of ways to protect your teeth during the holiday season. To reduce the risk of damage from drinking red and white wines, which are highly acidic and can eat away at a tooth’s enamel, refrain from swishing wine around in your mouth and drink water between glasses of wine to rinse acid from your teeth. And, while holiday goodies such as cookies, chocolate and candy canes are tempting, the sugar in them promotes the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. If you can’t brush or floss after eating sweet treats, drink water or chew a piece of sugarless gum, which will increased saliva flow and help wash away the bacteria. Finally, Shepley pointed out, holiday stress can cause some people to grind or clench their teeth, potentially resulting in chipped teeth, jaw pain and headaches. “Finding ways to alleviate your anxiety can help, but it’s also important to see your dentist, who can recommend solutions like a custom night guard,” Shepley said. “Wearing one at night will prevent you from taking out the holiday stress on your teeth while you sleep.”

ORCHARD & VINEYARD SUPPLY
Well-Suited For The Job
Provided by Cascade Water Systems / Orchard & Vineyard Supply. Photography by Kara Langley
Paul Ridgway says the secret to the company’s success is this: “It is all about the people. From the employees, to the people of the surrounding community, without them we would not be here.” Cascade Water Systems has been a Berkeley Pump Award Dealer for more than 10 consecutive years and was named The McMinnville Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2006. For nearly 23 years, Cascade Water Systems has been devoted to serving the Yamhill County community. A tradition they want to continue for many years to come. In 2020, Cascade Water Systems became part of the growing family of OVS, Orchard & Vineyard Supply. OVS is a leader in orchard and vineyard supplies from growing and training supplies to irrigation, agronomy, harvest and postharvest care. With Cascade Water Systems, OVS expanded its services in irrigation solutions and management for our hard-working farmers. For more information about Cascade Water Systems, visit online at www.cascadewatersystems.com, call 503-4351515 or toll-free at 877-231-7867, or email at cwsoffice@ cascadewatersystems.com.
C
ascade Water Systems has been servicing the well, pump, and water treatment needs of Yamhill County since 1998. From residential to commercial agriculture, Cascade has grown to become one of the area’s largest purveyors of well and water treatment equipment Originally the well and pump division of Cascade Tractor, the business was purchased by Paul Ridgway in 1998 and renamed Cascade Water Systems. With nothing more than a used service vehicle, a customer list, and 2 employees, they went to work servicing the needs of the local residents. Hard work and committed service resulted in company growth, and in 2000, the vineyard irrigation division was added to further serve the needs of the agricultural community. Specializing in irrigation design and water management, the vineyard irrigation division continued to thrive alongside the well and pump business. The business was expanded again in 2003 with the addition of a retail store front (Ridgway Supply), specializing in irrigation, tanks, and water treatment. This unusual dynamic of company interactions provided Cascade Water Systems with the ability to service its customers with a unique blend of speed and efficiency at a lower cost.

Solst ice WINTER
The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It's marked by the point at which the North Pole is at its farthest from the sun during its yearly orbit around the sun. Despite the temperature outside, the winter solstice is considered the astronomical beginning of winter. Meteorological winter begins December 1st and lasts until the end of February. Depending on how far north a person is in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter, their day can range from 9.5 hours to absolutely no sunrise at all. On the bright side, the days will gradually become longer in the Northern Hemisphere until the summer solstice in June. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same day marks the summer solstice and the Southern Hemisphere’s longest day of the year. Winter lovers, enjoy the shortest day of the year. Those longing for more sunlight, prepare to celebrate. Longer days are ahead.

ARTS & CULTURE
MEET THE ARTIST
JEANIE CLARKE By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer
off when she got hired almost immediately as a graphic artist for MacMillan McGraw-Hill, a company which produced textbooks. She did that for almost a decade before moving back to Portland (where she had lived previously). Upon Jeanie’s return, her sister introduced her to a relatively new but burgeoning company by the name of Jackson Pacific, where she still works today (although she technically retired in 2017). Jackson Pacific is known around the world for producing beautiful customized brass ornaments, the kind you might find at many vacation destination spots! Pittock Mansion, Camp 18, and the OHSU Tram are just a few of the local attractions boasting such ornaments, many of which were designed by Jeanie. These are gorgeous, highly-detailed, intricate 3D designs of all shapes, sizes, and colors. They make a perfect and tasteful keepsake, even for those who aren’t generally into knickknacks. So the next time you’re at the coast or any other kind of attraction, make sure to look for keepsakes made by Jackson Pacific, Inc. You may just find one designed by Jeanie herself! Check out their website at www.jacksonpacific.com/ornaments to see some of her work, or to place a custom-made order!

lthough there are always exceptions to the rule, it’s safe to assume that most of us have done a little traveling at some point in our lives, even if only around the state of Oregon. Often our travels likely included an interesting destination, like the picturesque Oregon coast or majestic Crater Lake, or perhaps just a pit stop at a random fantastical site claiming to be the “World’s Only This” or the “Country’s Biggest That.” Inevitably, with eyes full of wonder, many of us simply refused to leave without a souvenir to commemorate our experience; but did you ever wonder where those souvenirs might have come from? Let me introduce you to Jeanie Clarke. Born in South America and raised in New York, Jeanie came from an artistic family. Her father was a painter and several other relatives on her father’s side designed Hallmark cards, so Jeanie was exposed to the arts from an early age and was encouraged to develop her own style of creative outlet. In grade school, art classes were her favorite field of study, but she’d always had a practical side as well. The plight of the tortured starving artist did not appeal to her, and so she earned a much more marketable degree in Graphic Arts from Monterey Peninsula College in California. Her decision paid

HOLIDAY WINES
Essential Wines
For Your Holiday Table
By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer
H
ave you ever stood in the wine aisle of your local grocers during the holidays, baffled as to the appropriate wine for meals featuring poultry, beef, pork, or seafood—not to mention the array of appetizers and side dishes? Our guide below will help simplify this process with six wines flexible enough to compliment your holiday cuisines from autumn through winter.
Sauvignon Blanc
Also referred to as “Sancerre” in France, this medium-light bodied white wine is a winner. It features a crisp, herbal profile perfect for turkey, goose, chicken, or seafood.
Pinot Noir
With its bright acidity and versatile nature, Pinot Noir is one of the best choices for the holidays. It excels across the board with poultry, pork, and hearty beef dishes. The Pacific Northwest and California offer many solid choices with fruit-forward characteristics sure to please even the most discriminating palates.
Zinfandel
A more full-bodied white, Chardonnay is an excellent partner to fish or roast poultry. Likewise, Chardonnay pairs beautifully with beef, should you have guests who prefer to drink only white. In this case, opt for an oak-forward Chardonnay, as it will enhance the robust flavors of the beef.
Red Zinfandel has long been considered a great Thanksgiving wine for its ability to compliment turkey while also blending well with cranberry sauce and other sides. Its fruit-forward profile, along with notes of cinnamon, clove, and vanilla evoke the holiday season. Zinfandel also performs admirably with beef and pork, should your holiday dinner include a roast or baked ham.
Viognier
Cabernet Sauvignon
Chardonnay
Not as well-known as other whites, Viognier is a fantastic partner to roast turkey and other poultry dishes. Rounded in body with undertones of honey and spice, some of the best Viognier comes from the Rhone region of France, as well as Australia and South Africa. Like Chardonnay, Viognier can also play well with beef.
Cabernet Sauvignon, the “King of Reds,” is the ultimate pairing for beef. Cabernet’s dark, full-bodied character, often reminiscent of currants and black cherry, enhances the hearty flavors of such entrees as prime rib or crown roast.
Syrah/Shiraz
Another fabulous red wine to pair with beef is Syrah (known as Shiraz in Australia). This luscious red bursts with complex flavors from pepper to cherry, smoky to floral. Syrah, made in France’s Rhone Valley, is generally known more for its elegance and complexity, while Shiraz is bolder and more fruit-driven. If beef is on the menu, you can’t go wrong with Syrah.
Which Wine to Bring to a Party?
Let’s say you’ve been invited to a holiday event and wish to bring a bottle of wine, but you’re uncertain of the menu. The safest choices might be Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Both wines have versatility across a broad spectrum of entrees, and will be welcome additions to the holiday table. All of these featured wines are readily available at your local markets, where helpful staff can assist you in determining the best selections and values for your particular budget. 20 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
HOLIDAY CHEESES
Cheese For The Holidays A Quick & Easy Guide To A Savory Cheese Board By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer
A
s the holidays roll around, entertaining family and friends takes center stage. For many of us the holiday cheese board is a star player in the food festivities, yet with the plethora of choices available at local markets, assembling it can prove a bit daunting.
Basic Strategy
For presentation purposes, select cheeses of different colors, shapes, and sizes. When calculating the amount of cheese to purchase, three ounces per guest is a solid guideline. Thus, if you’re serving three types of cheese and entertaining 12 guests, you should buy at least 12 ounces of each type. If other appetizers will be served, the amount of cheese can be reduced to two ounces. In general, three varieties of cheese—a hard, a semi-hard, and a soft—will provide ample variety for most events.
Hard Cheeses Aged Gouda
This Dutch cheese is always a strong player on any cheese board. If you prefer a sharper, nuttier flavor with those delicious salty bits, opt for a Gouda aged at least 10 months. Many of the premier Goudas will be aged up to 18 months or more. Top brands include Beemster, Parrano, and Rembrandt.
Manchego
A full-bodied cheese made from sheep’s milk, this Spanish cheese from the La Mancha region is creamy yet nutty with toasty nuances. Aged Manchego has a wonderful granular texture much like aged Gouda, and will be a superb compliment to fruit or meats such as prosciutto, salami, and capicola.
Cheddar
A good aged cheddar is always a welcome member of any cheese board. American, English, and Irish cheddars are all fantastic choices, providing slightly different characteristics. In general, the longer a cheddar is aged the sharper the flavor. Tillamook, Kerrygold, and Cabot are all fine choices.
Semi-hard Cheeses Fontina
Originally from Italy, this versatile cheese features a sweet and pungent character nuanced with tones of butter and roasted nuts. It is rich and creamy with an intensity of flavor that increases with age. Sartori, Stella, and Boar’s Head are all excellent brands.
Comté
One of the most popular French cheeses, this creamy, mild cheese is a pleasing addition to any cheese board as it blends well with bolder flavored meats and preserves while adding a luxurious undertone. Jura Flore, Fort Rousses, and St. Antoine are all quality brands.
Soft Cheeses Brie
Soft and creamy, with a musky complexion, this French cheese is spreadable and delicious slathered on bread or crackers. Try it warmed and melted. Excellent brands are President, La Bonne Vie, or Dietz and Watson. Marin French is a quality domestic brand.
Camembert
Another soft spreadable cheese that hails from the Normandy region of France is Camembert. Not quite as creamy as Brie, it is less pungent, and pale yellow in color. Often celebrated as the most popular cheese of France. For festive additions consider cranberry cheeses such as Wensleydale or Celebrity. Crave truffles? Explore the many truffled cheeses on the market such as truffled Brie and Gouda. Newberg Community Advantage Magazine 21
INDUSTRY EXPERT
Jolie Richards at Bella Casa Real Estate
YOUR AGENT NEXT DOOR By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Kara Langley Photography
F
or the majority of us, entering the real estate market can be an intimidating endeavor. That said, it’s also one of the safer places to find opportunities for investments. The key to navigating the market successfully is finding the right agent: someone who has all of the necessary knowledge, experience, and an established network of industry insiders who can assist you throughout the process. Someone like Jolie Richards of Bella Casa Real Estate in McMinnville! Jolie is the perfect agent because she is the “agent next door.” She is your neighbor, your friend, someone you run into at the grocery store or invite over for a BBQ. She has a vast knowledge of the market and years of experience as an agent—the last 6 years with Bella Casa—but she’s also managed to maintain her enthusiasm and keen relatability. This has never turned into a “job” for her. She sincerely loves connecting with people, especially first-time buyers and those looking for older fixer uppers, and helping them find the home of their dreams.
After 8 years as mayor of Dayton, Jolie was looking to buy a house and move from Dayton to Lafayette when she discovered her “calling.” Taking all of the knowledge she’d gained as mayor, such as working with a huge variety of contractors on city projects, and her pre-existing love of remodeling and design, she turned herself into exactly the kind of agent you need when buying or selling your home. Jolie has lived in the area since 1994, so she knows Yamhill County like the back of her hand, and she is a full-time agent. What that means for you is that she is literally available 24/7! She sees herself as a counselor as much as an agent and is always onhand to help in any and every way she can. Real estate is a fantastic investment, and can be relatively stress free, but only when you have someone like Jolie directing you through the process. And she does it all with a smile on her face! If you are thinking of getting into the market, now is the time to do it. Just make sure you pick the right agent to assist. Call Jolie Richards @ 971-241-2508. Bella Casa Real Estate is located at 1002 N. Springbrook Rd. in Newberg.

NEWBERG ROTARIANS: BEAUTIFYING THE COMMUNITY
ou may have noticed over the past 4 years a series of colorful, vibrant murals popping up all throughout Newberg. These murals were created through a partnership between George Fox University and the Newberg Noon Rotary Club in an attempt to beautify our town and provide real-world professional experience for young art students. The mural project unofficially began in 2014 with a private mural still on display at CLIMAX Portable Machine and Welding Systems. Rotarian Geoff Gilmore, who at the time was the CEO of CLIMAX, wanted a way to help employees, Newbergundians, and customers locate their building by making it more of a local landmark with a big, vibrant mural. Geoff spent 2 years working with the City of Newberg to develop and implement a new municipal code in order to allow for murals to be legally created in town. Once the mural at CLIMAX was completed, Geoff and the Newberg Noon Rotary Club set out to beautify the City in hopes of telling a story through art to express who Newberg is and give art students an opportunity to gain professional experience. Four additional murals have been completed by the Newberg Noon Rotary Club with the help of, Geoff and fellow Rotarians, donated equipment from Reid Rental, and the GFU Art department. George Fox University Art and Design students, in collaboration with the Newberg Noon Rotary Club, created the following murals intended to encompass the ideals of Rotary and the City of Newberg; a place to grow, community and connections with the people in our town.
MURAL 1 “COMMUNITY WITH ONE ANOTHER” Steve’s Auto Service (112 N Meridian St, Newberg)
The graphic hands depict (from left to right) Giving Hands, Receiving Hands, and Embracing Hands and represent core values vital for Community. Geometric shapes are made dynamic and visually engaging by slight shifts in color and implied lines that establish interesting visual paths. This technique creates a bold background for the hands to interact with, but is not overwhelming. The team of artists that formed this concept wanted to create a welcoming and eye-catching mural that would cause walking traffic to stop and look closer, and also engage car traffic passing by with bright colors and bold forms that can be easily recognized at a glance.
For more information on membership or club activities visit NewbergRotary.org
MURAL 2 “THE ART OF NEWBERG” Newberg Public Library Annex (211 N Howard St, Newberg) This mural is located in the Art and Cultural District, incorporated in the design by the variety of figures engaging in literature, family, dance, visual, and musical arts. The figures in the design represent the diversity, service, joy, and community found in the art of Newberg. The geometric background and bright color palette was to embrace the playfulness found in art. The triangle pattern creates unity in the composition of the mural, which reflects the connectedness of the community in Newberg. The organic freedom of the background represents the Oregon landscape in an abstract manner.
MURAL 3 “THE COMMUNITY AND DIVERSITY OF THE CITY OF NEWBERG” Mini Market El Tala (1012 E 1st St, Newberg) The team of artists that formed this concept wanted to create a welcoming and eye-catching mural that would cause communities near the Mini Market El Tala and the Food Carts to look closer. The artists wanted the bright colors to encourage pedestrian audiences to engage with the mural as they pass by. With this design the artists hope to encompass Rotary’s ideals of community, service and connection, while also making an aesthetic addition to Newberg’s cityscape.
MURAL 4 “COMMUNITY, MUSIC, HISTORY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP” Lewis Audio Video (2112 Portland Rd, Newberg) Our newest mural has a fun and captivating color palette. The background is a replica of Newberg’s scenery with the far distant mountains and rolling vineyards toward the middle ground. In the design there is an emphasis on landscape in order to draw attention to the environment and viticulture of our region. You see a diverse group of figures enjoying walks or rides on an imagined brick road, which is a nod to the history of brick-making in the city of Newberg. Buildings in the upper left part of the image are illustrative depictions of the public library, the city hall, and quintessential Newberg homes. A significant focus of the mural is the large tree to the right of the composition, which is a portrait of the Ewing Young Oak, an important historical landscape landmark for Yamhill County. We see both the roots of the tree, representing the history of our region, and the rings, again, referencing the many years this community has existed, which can also communicate rings of sound, or an LP record, paying some homage to the site of the mural on the Lewis Audio building. The figures in the mural are in an attitude of leisure and joy, embodying hope and care for each other.
THE ROTARY MURAL CHALLENGE:
Complete this challenge and you will be entered to win one of five $20 gift cards to a local Newberg business. This challenge will be open through the end of December and five winners will be chosen at random. This opportunity is open to anyone.
Step 1) Go on a walk, ride, or drive, touring all 4 of our Rotary Murals. Step 2) Take a picture or selfie of yourself standing out in front of each mural. Step 3) Post those pictures onto the comment section of our “Rotary Mural Challenge” post within the Club Facebook page (www.facebook.com/newbergnoonrotary).

HISTORY
Alfred Carlton Gilbert Even As A Boy, The Erector Set Inventor Seemed Larger Than Life By Finn J.D. John
F
rom about 1913 on, every small boy in America knew who A.C. Gilbert was. Somewhere on an advertising page in practically every youthoriented magazine, his cheerful, immaculately dressed image could be seen, beaming over a neat bow tie and pointing proudly at a steam shovel, Ferris wheel, rocket launcher, or some other motorized contraption built with the product he’d invented: Erector.
week, young A.C. and his friends were setting the neighborhood on fire. Literally, that is. One of Gilbert’s childhood memories, as he recalled in the memoir he wrote when he was 70 years old, was building a fire department in the family barn. He cut a hole in the floor of the haymow and installed a wooden pole to slide down and cots to pretend to sleep on. He also engineered and rigged a self-opening apparatus for the barn door. Young Alfred and the other little “firemen” would all then lie down and pretend to be sleeping on the cots, like real firemen did when Alfred C. Gilbert as he appeared waiting for a call. Meanwhile, in around 1901, in his Pacific one of their number would run University jersey. out and set a brush fire for them (Image: Eli Whitney Museum) to extinguish (luckily, none of these ever actually got out of control; if they had, Salem might remember A.C. Gilbert rather differently than it does today!) Then the young arsonist would return and ring the alarm bell, and the boys would all leap out of their cots, slide down the pole, take the “fire engine” — a boy’s wagon with a 100-foot garden hose coiled up on it and a bell rigged to clang as it went — and race for the door. One of them would pull the lever, the door would open and out they’d go to save the day.
“Hello boys!” he’d be “saying,” in a distinctive informallooking italic type. “Make lots of toys!” And, in their millions, boys did. (Girls, too, although in that era of more rigidly defined gender roles far fewer girls were encouraged to take an interest in such things.) You might think a man who made a large fortune building what had to be the iconic toy of mid-century maker culture must have had a pretty interesting boyhood himself. You’d be right. Alfred Carlton Gilbert was born in 1884 in Salem, Oregon, and within six years of the event nearly everyone in the city was aware of the fact. There was clearly something special about this chipper-faced youth. He came from a family of very strict Congregationalists, so Sundays were for worship and contemplation only. But every other day of the 28 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Young Alfred used the fire station as inducement to get the other neighborhood boys to help him with his chores. After all, many hands made light work, and they all wanted to play. The price of getting to play with Alfred’s fire station was 10 or 15 minutes of helping him stack wood — and thus an hour-long chore was reduced to a few minutes, after which everyone got to play. It was truly win-win. The kind of salesmanship shown by this gambit was not a fluke. Young Alfred was a born salesman — which is, indirectly, how he became a magician. In those days, around 1890, there was a magazine called the Youth’s Companion. Boys and girls who sold lots of subscriptions to it earned credits that they could redeem from a catalog. Alfred enthusiastically dove into this, and after selling subscriptions to practically every other kid in Salem, redeemed his credits for a real magician’s magic set. It must have been a pretty good magic set. Soon Alfred was the neighborhood magician. But what he learned from that magic set was, more than anything, the power of practice. “I worked at my tricks hour after hour, day after day,” Gilbert recalled in his memoirs. “Of course, I wasn’t very good, but in time It was good enough to astound and delight my family and friends.” It was a lesson he took to heart.
From that time on, Gilbert’s life would follow a pattern: Find something worth doing, practice it relentlessly for thousands of hours, look up and realize he’d become one of the world’s best. Of course, with magic shows, it wasn’t nearly as simple as that sounds. But the young illusionist got good enough to impress professional traveling magician Hermann the Great during a Salem show in 1891. Alfred was called upon as an audience volunteer. After having rabbits pulled out of his pockets and an egg he’d carefully placed in a box transformed into a full-sized chicken, he got his chance when Hermann the Great asked him, “Now, son, don’t you wish you could do things like that?” “I can,” returned the bold youth, and proceeded to show Hermann his best trick: he made a card disappear. Hermann’s surprise, hammed up for the audience’s benefit, was probably genuine: backpalming a card was a professional-grade trick, something he surely didn’t expect to see from a 7-year-old boy in a remote rural outpost like 1890s Salem. “You’re very good, son,” he told the youth. “You’ll be a
great success. Come back to my dressing room after the show, I’d like to talk to you.” Sometime after that, the Gilbert family moved to Moscow, Idaho. But Alfred came back to Oregon in 1900 to attend Pacific University in Forest Grove for his undergraduate degree. At Pacific, he forged a reputation for mild mischief — stealing chickens to roast and eat over campfires in the woods, setting an outhouse on fire, that sort of thing. He also forged a reputation as a world-class athlete — in no small part due to the fact that he was one of the few athletes in 1900 who recognized the value of constant practice. While a student at Pacific, Alfred set the world’s record in chin-ups and the running long dive.
He met his wife, Mary Thompson Gilbert, at Pacific. “Alfred used to court me with one arm around my waist, and the other hand in his pocket — (practicing) back-palming a half-dollar,” Mary recalled, years later. Magic would be a huge part of A.C. Gilbert’s life story. Oregon would, too. But, ironically, he would have to move decisively (if regretfully) away from both to achieve his biggest successes. He left Oregon more or less for good when he graduated from Pacific and enrolled at Yale for medical school. While at Yale, he broke several more world records, including the pole vault and the rope climb, and founded a company with a friend: The Mysto Manufacturing Company, specializing in magic sets for professional and aspiring magicians. And he left magic, more or less, in 1913 when he created the iconic Erector Set — the toy that would make him truly rich and famous. By then he was well settled in on the East Coast. And his old neighbors and classmates in Oregon and Idaho could only look on from afar, taking pride in his success and remembering the old days; when a bow-tied magnate was still a scruffy, likeable lad of 10 or 12, busily lighting brush fires and pulling rabbits out of an old hat
