La Sierra

Mexican Grill & Lounge Written by Brad Neuhoff, Active Media contributing writer | Photos By Teresa Tingley

T

he relationship between La Sierra Mexican Grill & Lounge and the communities that they serve is one that owner Victor Lopez sees lasting a lifetime. “This is a great neighborhood and a great community, which makes all the difference,” he says. “We love our community and I think they love us too.”

Cooking is a skill that Victor gained when he first came to the United States in 1993. He started out as a dishwasher, but during his breaks he would watch his brother cook. Eventually he discovered the passion of cooking for himself, saying “I knew I wanted to have my own restaurant. I did not want to work my whole life for someone else. I only wanted to work for me.”

Located in Dundee, La Sierra is now in its 20th year in business. The 8,000 square foot restaurant is certain to make an impression on newcomers, with its large, festive dining room, and huge lounge area equipped with a full bar and video poker. What really grabs your attention when you walk in, though, are the aromas of the delicious food being prepared, and the prompt, friendly attention from the staff. “We are committed to treating people well,” says Victor.

Luckily for all of us, Victor is fulfilling that dream and our taste buds get to benefit from his success! There are so many amazing options on the La Sierra menu that it may be impossible to choose a favorite; from sizzling Fajitas, to zesty Carnitas, and the rave-worthy Carne Asada, which Victor considers his Signature Meal. “It’s the flavor and the way we cook,” he says. “The meat is so tender.” It’s also rumored that he uses a secret blend of spices that is a closely guarded secret, so of course I had to try it for myself.

Not only are customers treated well, but they are also treated to a fiesta of food unlike any other! A prime example is their La Sierra Burrito, which Victor says is their bestseller. The burrito is loaded with freshly grilled and flavorful meat, along with rice, beans, and Pico de Gallo, all wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. If that’s not enough to get your mouth watering, it’s also topped off with a special melted cheese sauce, lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. It’s guaranteed to satisfy even the largest appetite.

The enormous portion of sizzling seared meat is what you’ll first notice when it’s served, followed by the accompanying aroma of grilled onions and peppers, salsa with homemade guacamole, and toasty flour tortillas. After the first bite I knew instantly why Victor’s Carne Asada was so special. It is so tender and bursting with flavor, and the large portion size means you get to enjoy bite after delectable bite until you are totally stuffed! “My customers deserve what they are paying for,” he says.

Victor doesn’t just brag on the food, though. His amazing staff gets the highest praise, as well. It’s a close-knit team, and each member clearly takes pride in the job they do and the service they provide. “I listen to them, and they are so important to me. I treat them as my family,” says Victor. What is a mexican feast without some refreshing beverages to wash it all down with? There’s no shortage of options, as they carry a huge selection of beer, wine, hard alcohol and endless choices of flavored margarita specials, like raspberry and kiwi. Of course, there are nonalcoholic options as well, including soft drinks, juice, and horchata. If you want the festive flair without the alcohol, you can always go for a virgin margarita, too! This year has been especially difficult on our local small businesses, but Victor says the community has really rallied around them to show their support. It all comes down to that amazing relationship, and it’s one that Victor is extremely proud of and grateful for. He has plans to pay it forward by holding fundraisers for local schools and churches in the future, when it is safe to do so. Another bit of good news is that Victor has had such wonderful support with La Sierra that he’s been able to work on expanding! His new restaurant, Mi Lindo Nayarit, will be opening its doors in McMinnville very soon! The restaurant will feature Mexican seafood specialties and other amazing dishes. Victor is so thankful to the wonderful communities of Newberg and

Dundee that have helped make his dreams a reality, and he can’t imagine doing what he loves anywhere else. “La Sierra will stay here forever,” he says. I think we can all agree that that’s a win-win for everyone. La Sierra Mexican Restaurant is located at 1175 Hwy 99W in Dundee. They are open for dine-in or take-out, and delivery service. Visit lasierramexicangrill.com for more information and to view their menu, then call 503-554-1562 to place your order.

Ace Sewing & Vacuum

Written By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer | Photos By Stephanie Baker

F

ew business owners know their own product as well as Nick Egoroff does. Before he opened Ace Sewing & Vacuum here in Newberg little more than ten years ago, he’d spent about a quarter century in the industry as a technician servicing sewing machines and vacuum cleaners, which are frequently sold side-by-side in specialty shops.

Two years ago Nick and his wife Maria opened their second shop in Tigard, but their hearts remain with the Newberg shop because they like that it’s further away from the hustle and bustle of the Portlandmetro area. Lately, however, they have had some hustle and bustle of their own. “We’re extremely busy,” Nick says. “After COVID came along, if there can be a silver lining, it’s the fact that there are more sewers now. That, and people who have had sewing machines sitting in their closets for ten or twenty years, and now they’ve come back. We’ve been extremely busy with sewing machines, it’s hard to keep products in stock.” Ace Sewing & Vacuum carries nearly 50 brands of sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. According to Nick, as both items have become more electronic over the years, brands you might find in box stores or online may be cheaper, but they’re not made to last. He says it’s worth it to shop around, and with so many brands at Ace, you’ll be sure to find the perfect one. “It’s a little more expensive initially,” he said of the better brands. “But they last so much

12  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

longer that over time it more than pays for itself and becomes the less expensive machine.” Also, thanks to Nick’s previous experience, they are able to service your machine anytime it needs a repair or a tune up, making sure it stays in fantastic working condition. “We have a full service shop where we go through the machine and clean, oil, service and adjust everything, resetting it back to factory specs, making sure the machine is running absolutely perfectly,” Nick says. “On vacuums, we go through the entire unit, clean and service the brush roll and motor, and put everything back in good working order with parts that are needed.” Ace Sewing & Vacuum encourages annual servicing to resolve issues like snags, puckers, inconsistent tensions, thread or needle breakage, skipped stitches and damage to your fabric. The store’s pledge: “Our factory trained technicians do a thorough top to bottom service to ensure all aspects of the machine are working as good as new, if not better, in some cases.” In normal times they also offer in-store sewing classes, which unfortunately due to COVID restrictions are on hold for the time being. However, Ace does stock plenty of fabric for purchase to help keep their customers occupied at home. Their fabric sales are also up more than usual, thanks in part to both new and returning sewers, and the explosion of DIY face masks. “We have all the supplies you need if you’re making masks,” Nick says. Ace Sewing & Vacuum is located at 414 Portland Road in Newberg. They are open Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, and Saturday 10am4pm. If you’d like more information, visit their website at www. acesewingandvacuum.com. You can also call them at 503-538-1122, email them at Info@acesewingandvacuum. com, or find them on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.

SPOTLIGHT

Home Based Cat And Kitten Rescue In Yamhill County Written By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

A

bout four years ago, a family asked Brittney Hazel and her wife Kendall if they could help find a home for a stray litter of kittens that had been found in a barn. That was the beginning of Hazel’s House, a cat-and-kitten rescue operation that continues to this day. It is a mission that has put hundreds of stray and abandoned cats in homes where they’re safe, healthy and loved. The name “Hazel’s House” might be a bit misleading for some, conjuring an image of some cramped, smelly facility full of frightened cats. That is certainly not the case in reality. “We don’t have a site,” Brittney explains. “We do all this out of our own house. The majority of the rescue work is all in foster care.” That means a lot of networking with volunteers, screening families that want to help, and matching them up with cats before they go to a permanent home. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they’re not doing in-home visits at this time, and communication is done through the non-profit’s Facebook page, where messages are returned quickly. Hazel’s House can help with semi-feral kittens, mothers with litters, abandoned litters and orphaned kittens, and

Lavender Massage

bottle babies. They can set traps to contain the cats if necessary, and are able to work within a 25-mile range of Newberg. They also have helpful information about low cost spay/neuter clinics and vet care. Hazel’s House started out handling around 50 animals a year, but it’s been growing rapidly. In their second and third year, they started a partnership with the Newberg Animal Shelter, and the 2 organizations have a wonderful working relationship which has helped support that growth. This year, Hazel’s House has taken care of about 200 cats. How does the adoption process work? It all happens on Facebook. “When a cat or kitten is ready for adoption, we will post their picture and information and how long we are accepting applications on them for,” Brittney says. It’s not a first-come, first-serve basis, so customers should not expect to be able to “reserve” or “pre-adopt” an animal. “At Hazel’s House we strive to place cats and kittens in their ‘purrfect’ forever home.” Adoption fees are $150 for kittens and $50 for adult cats. Kittens will be started on vaccines, flea treated, dewormed, microchipped, and with a spay/neuter contract. Cats will be current on vaccines, fixed, dewormed, flea treated and microchipped. If you’re interested in fostering or adopting, contact Hazel’s House on Facebook at facebook.com/hazelshousepdx, call 971-264-0760, or email hazelshousepdx@gmail.com for more information.

The Boyhood Home of the 31st President

The Hoover-Minthorn House Museum

Written By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer | Photos Courtesy of the Hoover-Minthorn House Museum collection

I

t would seem that nearly every city has some sort of historical claim to fame. For Newberg, ours holds a significant weight on the national scale, as we can boast of the thirty-first President of the United States, Herbert Hoover, and the years he lived here during his youth.

An early settler to the area, Jesse Edwards, was among those responsible for luring Dr. Minthorn away from his job as school superintendent in Forest Grove to be involved in a new Quaker academy in Newberg. That academy eventually grew to become what we now know as George Fox University.

Hoover resided in Newberg, albeit briefly, in the late 1800s with his uncle, Dr. Henry John Minthorn, one of many Quakers who was attracted to the area and who served as both a teacher and local physician. They were formative years for Hoover. The future president had just turned 11 when he arrived in Newberg by rail, and he lived here for three years doing all the things local children did at the time: going to school, doing chores and working odd jobs on local farms, and exploring the wooded hills nearby.

Edwards built the house that is now known as the HooverMinthorn House around 1882, and platted the town as well. When Minthorn moved his family to Newberg, he bought the house from Edwards. It was three years later that he invited his recently orphaned nephew Herbert to live with them.

In his memoirs published in 1951, Hoover recalls arriving in Newberg: “I was at once put to school and the chores. These included feeding the doctor’s team of ponies twice a day, hitching them up periodically, milking the cow and splitting wood. All this routine, plus abundant religious occasions, somewhat interrupted the constant call for exploration of the Oregon forests and streams. That, however, was accomplished in time. Repression of the spirits of boys is not a Quaker method, and the mild routines have their values.” But before Herbert Hoover arrived in Newberg, there was the house that now bears his name and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house that currently exists as a non-profit museum. How did it, and Dr. Minthorn, come to be here? 20  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Again, in his memoirs, Hoover recalls the day of his arrival in 1885: “When I arrived in Newberg, Aunt Laura Minthorn and her... daughters, my cousins, were making pearbutter supply for the winter in a wash-boiler over a fire in the yard. I had never eaten a pear before. I was asked to stir the butter and urged to eat as many pears as I liked. I liked them. But after two days of almost exclusive pear diet, I did not eat pears again for years.” That pear tree still stands in the picket-fenced yard. The Quaker faith exerted a strong influence on young

Hoover. His previous membership in the Springdale Monthly Meeting back in his birthplace of West Branch, Iowa was transferred to the Newberg Monthly Meeting in 1887, which made him part of the Newberg Society of Friends.

“

He attended the academy headed by his uncle, and he was particularly influenced by a Sabbath School teacher, Evangeline Martin. Hoover was among the boys who presented her with a scrapbook with the following short note: “Mrs. Vannie Martin - Please accept this as a token of appreciation of your kindness and interest in us, manifest in your efforts for us in Sabbath School - with much love - your class.” Historical accounts note that Hoover returned to Newberg “many times to visit Mrs. Martin.”

Hoover helped Americans stranded in Europe at the outbreak of World War I and also headed the Commission for Relief in Belgium, which got food to about nine million people whose country had been overrun by the German army. Then-President Woodrow Wilson appointed him as the U.S. food administrator for the duration of the war.

A Quaker boy who became one of the world’s greatest humanitarians

Tour guides at Hoover-Minthorn House emphasize that it was the values instilled in young Herbert by his parents, Mrs. Martin, and particularly those years with the Minthorn family that equipped him with the sensibility that compelled him to oversee extraordinary humanitarian relief efforts in war zones, even before he was elected President in 1928.

After his election to the office of President, plans were set in motion to commemorate the former Newberg resident and his legacy. In 1947, the HooverMinthorn House was transferred to a non-profit group and was restored to its original configuration after some remodeling by other owners. The restoration of the property was spearheaded by Dr. Burt Brown Barker, one of Hoover’s childhood friends.

”

The Hoover-Minthorn House Museum is located at 115 S. River Street in Newberg. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and children ten and under are free; families of four or more pay no more than $20. The museum is closed in December but will reopen in January; call ahead at 503538-6629 to check for hours and COVID protocols. For more information, visit www.hooverminthorn.org.

KEEP HOLIDAY SMILES

BRIGHT Avoid tooth damage and decay caused by wine, sweets and stress by making oral health a priority.

By Robert Preidt, HealthDay News

T

he busy holiday season may disrupt many people’s daily routines, but at this time of year it is especially important to remember to look after your teeth, an expert advises. “Holiday get-togethers tend to lead people to consume sugary treats and drink alcoholic beverages more than usual,” Dr. George Shepley, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry, said in an academy news release. “Additionally, with their busy schedules and increased stress levels, I’ve noticed that my patients’ oral hygiene suffers. They forget the most basic of oral hygiene tasks that can counteract the effects of sugary snacks and drinks,” he pointed out. Shepley offers suggestions on a number of ways to protect your teeth during the holiday season. To reduce the risk of damage from drinking red and white wines, which are highly acidic and can eat away at a tooth’s enamel, refrain from swishing wine around in your mouth and drink water between glasses of wine to rinse acid from your teeth. And, while holiday goodies such as cookies, chocolate and candy canes are tempting, the sugar in them promotes the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. If you can’t brush or floss after eating sweet treats, drink water or chew a piece of sugarless gum, which will increased saliva flow and help wash away the bacteria. Finally, Shepley pointed out, holiday stress can cause some people to grind or clench their teeth, potentially resulting in chipped teeth, jaw pain and headaches. “Finding ways to alleviate your anxiety can help, but it’s also important to see your dentist, who can recommend solutions like a custom night guard,” Shepley said. “Wearing one at night will prevent you from taking out the holiday stress on your teeth while you sleep.”

Beaded Snowflake Ornaments

OF SEASONAL INTEREST

HOW TO MAKE

P

erhaps more than any other year, this holiday season is a great time to get crafty and creative! With everyone stuck inside even more than usual, it can be easy to go stir crazy, but a fun project will really help to ease the boredom and restlessness. This project is especially great because at the end you’ll have beautiful ornaments to hang on your tree or around the house for years to come!

W H AT YO U ’ L L N E E D : • Wire snowflake forms (these can be purchased online or find a tutorial to make your own) • Assorted beads (make sure the holes are large enough for the wire) • Needle nose pliers • Ribbon for hanging (or an ornament hook)

S T E P S: • Bead one prong of the wire form, leaving about ½ inch at the end. • Use pliers to bend the end of the wire back and close it to make a loop. • Repeat steps 1 & 2 for all of the remaining prongs. • Insert ribbon through one of the end loops and tie the ends together, or simply use an ornament hook. *Instructions from happinessishomemade.net 26  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

MEET THE DOCTOR

Dr. David Sanders

of Oregon Eye Specialists

by David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

any children form a bond with animals, and sometimes that bond is so profound that it affects the rest of their life. In the case of Dr. David Sanders of Oregon Eye Specialists, it was his relationship with animals that put him on the path to become an ophthalmologist, with expertise in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. “I had a deep fascination and love for all kinds of animals and had actually planned to become a veterinarian,” Dr. Sanders says. “I ended up narrowing my focus to the most interesting medicine to me: human medicine.” After studying at Oregon State University, he spent time working in clinical cancer research at Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland, where he saw daily how important the intersection of innovation and warmth was in treating patients. While in medical school, he had the opportunity to work on public health projects in Colombia and Ethiopia, and even spent some time studying in Northern Africa. “It was during these projects that I fell in love with ophthalmology and the possibility to change the world for the better, caring for individual patients and populations,” he said. “The profound impact of eye surgery on people’s quality of life was so obvious, both abroad and in the United States, and I was hooked.” Dr. Sanders received his M.D. and a Master of Public Health degree with a focus in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Oregon Health & Science University. He completed ophthalmology training at the University of Michigan, and his glaucoma fellowship at OHSU and Legacy Devers Eye Institute. Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve and can lead to blindness if it goes untreated. Dr. Sanders believes

there is a massive need for more expert glaucoma care, and he has a passion for providing that care. “There are exciting new research findings and options for controlling glaucoma that have come about in the last several years,” he says. “In particular, I’m very excited about minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries that add very minimal risk to a cataract surgery but can help patients preserve their vision by controlling their glaucoma. They can also minimize their glaucoma pressurelowering eyedrop medication burden.” Dr. Sanders absolutely loves his profession and the opportunity it gives him to serve people. “One of the reasons I chose ophthalmology was lasting life-long relationships with patients that are uncommon in medicine these days. The richness of such a patient-doctor relationship is really one of the reasons I feel so fortunate to be in the field I am in.” When he’s not working, Dr. Sanders enjoys visiting local vineyards with his wife and working in the kitchen. “I love the challenge of making golden sourdough loaves from a starter,” he says. “Just like ophthalmology, cooking demands a lot of attention to detail. Your efforts are rewarded when you put in the extra time and dedication!”
