Chimcare Chimney Service
Chimcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day. Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals. As they have grown, Chimcare has expanded with additional locations in order to service the greater Portland and Seattle areas. Their chimney professionals can service homes and businesses as far north as Everett, Washington and as far south as Salem.
Along with providing chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair services, the great team at Chimcare can also help transform your outdoor living space by constructing a beautiful outdoor fireplace for you to enjoy all year round. They are experts at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar. In 2005 Richard’s son Jesse took over the business. Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse remains committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer. Along with the current customer base, Jesse is working hard to expand Chimcare as his father had always dreamed. They are always looking to serve new customers who are searching for clean-cut service technicians with experience, quality workmanship, and a name that is trusted around the northwest. They are proud to carry on the Peralta family tradition of providing exemplary chimney care for you and your home. If you have any questions or want to inquire about their services, you can visit their website at https://www.chimcare.com, or call them at (800) 362-4840.

Christopher Reeve:
Superman I-IV (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987)
Started 44 years ago, Superman I and Superman II blew peoples’ minds! I think this franchise’s success greatly depends upon visionary director Richard Donner, who directed great movies like the Lethal Weapon series and cult classics The Goonies & The Lost Boys. These movies are action-packed, funny, and just solid entertainment (III & IV aren’t as great, but still good). The starstudded cast includes Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Ned Beatty (Otis), and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), among others. But let’s not forget Christopher Reeve, a Cornell and Juilliard School graduate, and classically trained actor. His simple spandex, dark slicked hair and curl were true to the comics, and his kind, sly, understated demeanor were fantastic—the Man of Steel was a true American hero. He played Clark Kent exactly as he should be—meek, bumbling, and clumsy, in the iconic thick black glasses. And that Clark Kent good-naturedness carries into his Superman, an altruistic and all-powerful alien who finds his humanity. Rated PG, watch these classics!
Brandon Routh:
Superman Returns (2006)
The black sheep of Superman movies, Bryan Singer directed and wrote the story, who also directed the hit or miss X-Men movies and the recently acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody. Although visually slick, the pacing is a bit slow, the story too focused on romance instead of action, and Brandon Routh’s Superman is a tad stoic. That said, it’s polished and watchable, but not my favorite. Co-starring Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), James Marsden (Richard White), and Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), and others. Rated PG-13, it’s a solid entry in the Superman cinematic universe.

Henry Cavill:
Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)
Heir apparent to Christopher Reeve and bearing an incredible resemblance, Henry Cavill has 3 films under his belt as Superman and he’s fantastic! Cavill’s Superman is just as sly, kind, and softspoken as Reeve’s, but he’s much more ripped and modern in today’s superhero heyday. Ultimately, you just like Cavill and want to root for him. Directed by the polarizing, long-winded, but reliable Zack Snyder, the movies are visually spectacular, action-packed, funny, and really fun to watch. Man of Steel has a star-studded cast rivaling the original movies, including Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Russel Crowe (Jor-El), and more. BvS and Justice League are team-up movies but still Supermancentric and solid entertainment. Rated PG-13, give them a watch!
Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

Happy Art Ceramic Studio By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
S
ince their last article back in July 2021, Happy Art Ceramics Studio was getting ready to move from their long-standing Wilsonville location. And as of November 2021, they’ve been loving their new location, located right off 219 & Wynooski in Newberg. The brand new studio, built by Tracy’s husband Jack and son Andy, is located right on her own property near the Willamette River! It’s a little bit smaller, but it’s quaint and offers all the same amenities in a gorgeous rural setting. We all have a creative side. Some of us embrace it and develop it, because we all have a need to create and express ourselves. And if going through a worldwide pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that there is no better time than NOW to do the things we’ve always wanted to. Looking for a new creative outlet, for something fun to do with the kids, for a ladies night out, or an evening with your spouse? Look no further than Happy Art Ceramic Studio! Whether you’re a seasoned painter or a novice, you will enjoy creating something here. It’s the perfect place to relax, socialize, and get your paint on! Owner Tracy Bischoff is a wonderfully warm and welcoming person, not to mention an absolute professional. She has her own kiln on-site and does all her own glazing and firing, so you can rest assured your project will come out perfectly every time. They provide the place, the paint, the tools, the Tracy Bischoff, Owner techniques, the kiln, and the glaze. All you have to do is provide a positive attitude and pay for the pottery pieces you choose to paint. It’s that simple! Prices vary on the items, but they literally have hundreds of pieces on the shelves every day. If you prefer to create at home, you can order a To-Go Box: a complete kit with paint, brushes, your chosen

ceramic piece, and instructions. Paint at home, at the park, or wherever you like! Just return it to them to be fired and glazed when you are finished. If you want to create on a regular basis, join the Happy Art Home-Art Club! For only $60/month, you get 4 seasonal ceramic projects (1 each Saturday) to paint at home, plus supplies and directions. Or come to the studio with some friends, co-workers, neighbors, youth group, or mom club. You are welcome to bring in your own snacks and drinks! Walk-ins are welcome, however, their tables & parking are limited, so we suggest calling first to save a table. They currently offer 2 classes, KIDDOS, ages 4-12, Wednesday 4-5:30 pm ($25 each or $80/month for 4 classes, PreRegistration is required), and ADULTS, all ages, Thursday 11-12:30 PM ($10 each OR $30/month for 4 classes + cost of pottery). They will also be adding summer KIDS classes Wednesday and Friday mornings—stay tuned. Support this great local business and do something fun, relaxing, and creative today! Happy Art Ceramics is located at 7905 NE Dog Ridge Rd in Newberg. For more information, visit happyartceramics.com or call 503-682-3473. HISTORY
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
C
reated by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, Superman first appeared in 1938’s Action Comics #1, which sold for a staggering $3.25 million in 2021. Starring in 1939’s Superman #1, this was the first comic book ever devoted to a single character. Interestingly, Superman was first created as a homeless villain given temporary powers by a mad scientist, but thankfully Siegel and Schuster gave him a cape, spandex, a Midwestern childhood, and a cool alien backstory instead! Although earning moderate salaries, Siegel and Schuster unbelievably sold the rights and royalties to Superman for $130. When they asked for a raise, DC Comics falsely told Siegel, “Our company has very little to gain in a monetary sense from the syndication of this material.” After filing a lawsuit, they were fired in 1947. Siegel returned to DC in 1959 at standard pay and no byline (aka no credit), leaving again in 1965 and filing another lawsuit. When the Superman movie began production in the 70s, Siegel launched a successful PR campaign and secured $20,000 annual pensions for himself and Schuster, an amount that has increased over time. As of 2016, their estates have launched further copyright lawsuits for additional compensation. But let’s get to Superman’s backstory, if you don’t know it from the many comics and films… The planet Krypton is facing climate collapse and destruction, but the leaders won’t listen to Superman’s father, Jor-El, the planet’s best scientist. Fearing the worst, Jor-El and Lara put baby KalEl into a small spaceship and send him to Earth. Krypton explodes, orphaning Kal-El, and the planet’s remnants become kryptonite, Superman’s one vulnerability. And the red blanket Kal-El is wrapped in becomes his cape! His spaceship crashes in rural Smallville, Kansas, where he’s adopted by the Kents and leads a typical albeit concealed life as Clark Kent, a farmer’s son. But he can’t contain his powers for long, and he yearns for the excitement of the big city. Leaving behind
16 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
his parents and childhood love, Lana Lang, he moves to Metropolis to become a reporter for the Daily Planet, falling in love with Lois Lane, and sneaking off as Superman whenever danger calls. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about Superman’s most important moments in comic book history: The Death of Superman and Crisis on Infinite Earths. 1985’s Crisis was a meta-attempt to restart the continuity (or lack thereof) for Superman and all of DC Comics’ characters, whose backstories had gotten so tangled and contradicted that no one could keep them straight anymore. DC’s solution was to create the multiverse, where all the various versions of characters could live —Golden Age Superman, for instance, lives on Earth 2—and in this “event,” the big baddie, The Anti-Monitor, wants to destroy the multiverse. It’s mind-boggling, epic, emotional, staggeringly illustrated, and a surprisingly fun read that forever changed DC Comics. 1992’s The Death of Superman, a PR stunt cash grab and one of the worst comics ever written in my opinion, made $30 million the first day and sold 6 million copies. The unprecedented idea of Supes’ death shocked the world at the time, but for me it just lacks substance. Superman has survived just about everything, like Batman, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, interdimensional super gods, time travel, and flying through the sun. But Doomsday, a big brute, punches Superman to death for 160 pages! Thankfully, Superman is revived in the incredibly written and redeeming The Return of Superman by Dan Jurgens. If you read Death, make sure you read Return immediately after! One of the most iconic symbols and recognizable superheroes ever, Superman has forever changed pop culture since his inception 84 years ago! Spanning nearly a half century of films and tens of thousands of comic book pages, the Man of Steel continues to capture the hearts and minds of readers young and old. Watch a movie or pick up a comic book today to celebrate this pop icon!

Your First Call in a Home Disaster By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer | Photos by Megan Rose Photography

ikes! A water pipe bursts and the basement is flooding, or a severe winter storm topples a tree and demolishes a section of roof. Emergencies such as these require immediate assistance. What to do? Who to call? Rapid Response Restoration & Construction LLC will come to your rescue any time day or night, any day of the week—that includes weekends and holidays too! Rapid Response Restoration & Construction realizes that emergencies don’t wait, so neither should you. Unique in the industry, they are the only “fullservice” restoration company in the area, serving communities spanning approximately a 2-hour driving radius from their McMinnville-based operation. Dryouts and damage repair from water, smoke, fire, etc. is only the beginning of the services they offer. Rapid Response Restoration & Construction also contracts the build-back and repair side of the project, “which is a bonus for our customers,” expresses co-owner, Melissa Watson. A homeowner is never “left stuck” by what to do next or where to turn once the initial dry-out or demolition is done. Rapid Response Restoration & Construction stays on the job and helps the homeowner “navigate the process from start to finish,” walking them through the needed repairs, as well as completing those repairs.
R12 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
“It feels really good seeing the process through to the end,” Melissa says. “And we are proud to have partnered with some really amazing local companies and contractors with the same core values.” Rapid Response Restoration & Construction has worked hard to build their own community of partnerships by incorporating “likeminded” local and small businesses. These affiliates assist with projects during times of high demand, and those requiring specialty services (i.e. carpet services, electrical, plumbing, etc.). Customers can rest assured that the same quality of service will be implemented throughout the entire project. Recognizing just how confusing and overwhelming it can be dealing with insurance while experiencing the heartbreak of a fire, the severity of water damage, or the like, Rapid Response Restoration & Construction is there for you. They work with ALL insurance companies and offer deductible assistance as well. As
Melissa relates, “We want to be that shining light, we want to be somebody that’s on your team, we want you to feel that you have a friend in the project, we really strive for that.” Based in McMinnville, owners Joel and Melissa Watson started Rapid Response Restoration & Construction 7 years ago. Joel grew up in Newberg with a background in construction and had worked previously in restoration. He loved the science behind the repairs—drying out buildings, etc., and had the opportunity to work for a few large corporations. Although the Watsons found that large corporations were “not for us,” they gained valuable business knowledge. Having identified areas they could improve upon, they realized their vision would be best suited to the small town community. Melissa, who was born and raised in McMinnville, was excited to move back to the area to raise a family and “bring our knowledge back home,” promising that in our business “we would do all the things we saw the need for.” Customers are top priority at Rapid Response Restoration & Construction! And if you’re wondering, they take on non-emergency jobs too. Offering full-spectrum construction, they “do it all”— fence building, deck building, kitchen remodels, etc.—whatever the customer needs. Towards the end of each project, homeowners are provided a complete “walk through” addressing
any remaining details, and upon completion they receive a Certificate of Satisfaction. Joel and Melissa are proud of the reputation they’ve built for Rapid Response Restoration & Construction LLC. They can hold their heads high as they encounter their school children’s coaches and teachers, and their neighbors and friends, “because we believe in what we do,” says Melissa. They show their support for the community through attending local nonprofit events and sponsoring local youth teams. On Call 24/7, Rapid Response Restoration & Construction LLC: Your first call in a home disaster! WHAT TO DO IN A DENTAL EMERGENCY
I
t’s important to take action quickly in emergency dental situations. Below are a few tips on how to handle tooth injuries and pains: KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH Find the tooth immediately and place it in a glass of slightly salted tap water or cold milk without first cleaning or scrubbing it. Take the tooth to your dentist as soon as possible, preferably within 30 minutes of the injury, and he or she may be able to replace it in your mouth. BROKEN TOOTH Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and soothe the tooth. Place an ice pack on the cheek nearest the injury to help keep the swelling down. See your dentist as soon as possible. TOOTHACHES Keep food away from the tooth that hurts. Rinse your mouth with warm water after eating and floss your teeth. If your jaw is swollen, place an ice pack on the cheek that hurts. Do not put heat or aspirin on the painful areas. Toothaches can have a number of causes, such as an unnoticed cavity, gum disease, a crack in a tooth, or a new filling that doesn’t fit right. See the dentist as soon as possible, particularly if swelling is present. MOUTH SORES Avoid acidic foods, such as oranges and pineapples, which can “sting” the sores. Often, sores in the mouth are canker sores, which are small ulcers. Call your dentist if your mouth sores persist for more than two weeks. If you notice any lumps or white patches in or around your mouth, you should see your dentist immediately, as they may indicate a more serious problem. Whenever you have a tooth injury or pain, it’s important to seek care from your dentist as soon as possible. Keep your dentist’s phone number handy! ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
DAN REED
For the Love of Paint By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
W
e’re all familiar with Dan Reed, the musician. Born and raised right here in Portland, Oregon, he’s our hometown hero who has been rocking and rolling across the globe with his band, the Dan Reed Network, since 1987. Incidentally, the Dan Reed Network is preparing now to unleash their exciting new album, Let’s Hear It For The King, to a fervent and anxious fanbase. But music alone does not define the man; Dan is a multifaceted artist expressing himself through a variety of creative endeavors. Most significantly, outside of his musical career, he has also become an avid and revered painter. He actually started painting back in college. He took some classes and produced some beautiful work, but when his musical career took off, painting naturally took a back seat. It wasn’t until years later, after Dan became disillusioned with the music industry and he put the band on hiatus, that he returned to the canvas. They were dark times. He had traveled the world in support of The Rolling Stones, he had reached the pinnacle of success, scaled the very heights of Mt. Olympus, but inside he was feeling empty, bereft of joy and inspiration. Painting allowed him the freedom he’d been missing in music. Without the strict “guidance” of labels and overeager A&R representatives making their demands, telling him what to play, how to play, and how to look, he was finally able to express himself more authentically. There were no rules, no borders; only the edges of the frame to restrict his flow. And it was transformative! Along with his spiritual journey (he spent years meditating and studying at a monastery), the demons
24 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
he was able to exorcise through the process of putting paint to canvas, helped him navigate those dark corridors and return to a path of wellness and light. Although he has returned to music, and the fans are all grateful, Dan hasn’t given up his “second love” this time around. Painting allows his creativity of expression to simply flow. They are all abstract pieces, informed by internal emotion and mood versus being representative, realistic compositions. They are fascinating to behold, full of depth and color, inviting thorough examination and discussion over the feelings they evoke. They are the kinds of paintings you can stare at for hours, continuously finding new and interesting patterns as they emerge. So there you have it. Dan Reed: accomplished musician and painter. Check out his work on Facebook at Dan_Reed_Art or on instagram: @Dan_Reed_Art.

Fizzy Sherbet Punch
Cool off this summer with this creamy, fruity punch that's so easy to customize. This one is filled with fruit, plenty of fizz, and enough sherbet to go around. We love it for its simplicity and the fun pops of color it brings! INGREDIENTS
3 c. ice 2 (2-L) bottles lemon lime soda 1/4 c. grenadine 2 c. pink lemonade 1 c. pineapple juice
2 c. pineapple chunks 1 c. sliced strawberries 1 qt. sherbet 1 c. maraschino cherries
DIRECTIONS
1. In a large punch bowl, add ice. Add lemon lime soda, grenadine, pink lemonade, pineapple juice, strawberries, and pineapples. 2. Top with sherbet and maraschino cherries and serve immediately. SERVICE ABOVE SELF NEWBERG ROTARIANS: SUPPORTING NEWBERG PUBLIC SCHOOLS RESOURCE ROOMS
T
he Newberg Noon Rotary Club has several ways of supporting local students, including annual scholarships, providing dictionaries to third graders, supporting grad nights, and more. The Club Foundation also has had a longstanding goal to specifically provide consistent annual financial support for the NSD resource rooms that work to provide basic needs resources to any student in need. Rotary had a mission to provide critical resources to students began many years ago when the Newberg Rotary Foundation created and managed what was known as the Rotary School Needs Program. Funded by the club and administered by late Rotarians Bob Weaver and Ray Simonsen, Newberg School District (NSD) representatives could contact the program and get authorization to be reimbursed for purchases of eligible resources. In 2015, the Resource Room project was started at Chehalem Valley Middle School, and this new program proved more accessible to students and the Club Foundation ultimately decided to discontinue the Rotary School Needs Program and instead provide grant funds to the Resource Rooms. The Newberg Rotary Foundation has since awarded the Resource Rooms (10 schools) with approximately $10,000 of grants each year since 2019, and many of our Rotarians have participated in these projects directly as volunteers of the Resource Rooms.
Today, each of the 10 schools within the NSD work with volunteers each year to have their own on site Resource room, independently run by community and parent volunteers, available for use by students throughout the District. This project does not exist at each of our 10 public schools, without someone willing to lead the project at each school each year, so it is important to raise awareness about this foundational project that supports our communities’ children and that we as community members make sure the project continues to be inside our schools as a support for our children. Thanks in large part to funding by organizations like Rotary, generous businesses, and individuals throughout the community, the Resource Rooms are able to provide students in need with clothes, shoes, school supplies, hygiene items, and food. The project is run 100% by volunteers and funded completely through donations. It is estimated that over 40% of the students in our community are living at or below the poverty line. These resource rooms not only support our vulnerable kids, but also support our teachers and staff who often dig into their own pockets to provide for a number of these students' needs. This proactive model addresses needs much faster than the previous reactive approach so children no longer wait for needed items. The Resource Rooms throughout the Newberg School District will be back up and running when school starts in September and are always looking for additional donors and volunteers. For more information on how to donate or volunteer for a local Resource Room, look them up on Facebook or the Newberg School District Website or reach out directly to any of the schools after the start of the school year. “An important part of what the Resource Room offers is a place for students to find a sense of connection in a safe, welcoming space where there’s no judgment and the only question asked is ‘How can we help you today?’. A student recently left us a note that said, ‘I love how I always feel included and loved no matter who I am, I can always be myself. I love everyone’s kindness.’ That’s the very heart of why we volunteer.” - Jan Hart, NHS Resource Room Project Leader
