IN GOOD TASTE

Newberg’s New Favorite Family-Friendly Bar & Grill

By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Kara Langley Photography

N

ewberg is a wonderful place to live, and with the ideal location in the heart of Oregon Wine Country, it’s a popular destination for travelers too! But hold the phone, because there’s an amazing new place in town that you have to check out, and it’s not a winery. It’s the Old Town Bar & Grill! Owners Justin and Amanda Dillingham are incredibly excited to welcome you into their brand new establishment. They are both native Oregonians and have lived in Newberg for the past 8 years. While they love the city and all that it offers, they recognized that there was an opportunity to provide an alternative to some of the other amazing restaurants in town. Justin and Amanda may be familiar faces to those who have visited either the popular Wildwood Cafe or the historic Blue Moon Lounge in McMinnville. They have owned and run both businesses for the last three and a half years, and they are thrilled to now bring their success and experience to Newberg. You simply must come over and check out their new venture! The historic building on East 1st Street that houses Old Town Bar & Grill was constructed way back in 1905! It was initially part of the Spaulding Mill (which itself played a huge role in Newberg’s history), and after that it was owned by Krohn’s Appliance Repair all the way up until 2019 when it was first transformed into the Old Town Bar & Grill. Unfortunately, the original owners opened during the height of COVID and the unprecedented circumstances proved to be too much of a challenge. Like so many others, they were forced to close the doors. But the light of opportunity would shine once more,

6  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

and in June of 2021 Justin and Amanda were able to purchase the business, personalize it to their tastes and standards, and reopen! Their business model is a straight-forward one: to provide a family-friendly place (kids are welcome until 9pm) where people can go for great food, great service, and great times. Of course, it’s always easier said than done to put all the elements together in the right way so that the result measures up to the expectations, but Justin and Amanda have succeeded! It’s a testament to their experience and their professionalism that running a successful business would seem to come almost naturally to them. Walk into Old Town and it’s tangible: they’ve cultivated an atmosphere made for relaxation and enjoyment, where an experienced and friendly staff ensure that everyone feels welcome.

The menu is similar to what it was before they took over. Justin says that there were “good bones” in place already, so there wasn’t much need to make drastic changes. They still serve your archetypal bar food, though slightly elevated, and the Dillinghams pride themselves on quality and consistency, so only the best ingredients are used. Their Flatbread Pizzas are overwhelmingly popular and there’s a reason for that: they are fantastic! Everything on the menu is delicious, but these just happen to be standout favorites. Their burgers (served with a unique signature sauce) and sandwiches are all amazing. The Spinach & Artichoke Dip is made from scratch, as is the delectable beer-cheese sauce that accompanies their hot pretzels. On weekends they open at 9am for breakfast, and that menu (which includes a breakfast burrito, waffles, and biscuits & gravy) has proved to be a hit as well. Of course, no bar is complete without wings, fish & chips or an awesome burger,

all of which you’ll find at Old Town. They also have a small variety of salads for those in search of lighter fare. When it comes to drinks, they have a whole slew of domestic and local craft beers on tap, which get rotated. They have 4 varieties of wine, all from wineries within a 10 mile radius, and they have a wonderful selection of craft cocktails, including some incredible fruit-infused varieties! For those who don’t partake, they also have fantastic non-alcoholic drink options like the Red Hills Lavender Lemon Drop and the Yamhill Sour. If you’re a sports fan, you’ll love it here too! They have 7 big-screen TVs which are always displaying current sporting events. Video Lottery is coming as well! They are still waiting on licensing, but that is something to look forward to. As the state eases out of COVID restrictions, live music will also be featured. According to Justin, they have one event planned already with more to come! Be sure to follow them on social media to keep track of all the exciting changes and updates. Locally owned and operated, Old Town Bar & Grill is the other great reason to visit Newberg, so come in and check them out today! Old Town Bar & Grill is located at 315 E 1st Street in the heart of downtown Newberg. Call 503-554-9362 or visit oldtownbarnewberg.com for more information.

No Travel Adventure Is Too Big Or Too Small!

Why Having A Travel Agent Is More Important Than Ever By Patricia Hall, Certified Travel Specialist

T

raveling has changed since COVID-19 hit, and continues to change depending upon the numbers the CDC gives our authorities. While states & countries open up to more travelers, it brings more or less restrictions and protocols. All these new rules create confusion for a traveler, and that is why an in-person travel agent vs. an online travel agency is key to have in your back pocket.

“The whole trip went without a hitch. Patti totally hit it just right for us!” - Sam R

Online travel agencies like Expedia, Cheaptickets, and others are basically just a booking agent. If you are having an emergency while you travel, the online agency may not be able to help you. One of the most common questions is about vaccinations, and this is complicated to navigate. Some states, like Hawaii, have their own guidelines, as well as other countries and even cruise lines. Your in person travel agent will have all this information at their fingertips. As an in-person travel agent, it’s my job to do all the research behind the scenes, know all protocols and current happenings that will affect your travel, plan your trip down to the smallest details, and even add personal touches for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons, or weddings at your destination and more!

“Our honeymoon was magical thanks to Touch & Go Travel Agency’s exquisite planning!” - Sara D

Health Insurance

Though there is no penalty for not having health insurance, should you live day to day without it? Recently, with a new law, the American Rescue Plan Act, you and your family can take advantage of financial assistance to have health insurance with much lower premiums. It is wise to have some level of coverage so that you and your family can have confidence that your medical needs will be covered. Areas of our services: Individual And Family Plan, Small and Large Group Business, Dental & Vision.

Medicare Insurance

A federal health program for people age 65 and over or a person at any age who has disability for 24 months. Original Medicare, which consists of Part A, hospital and Part B, medical. Part B is your responsibility to pay the monthly premium which is set at $148.50 for 2021. You will need Part D, prescription drug plan additionally to avoid penalty. There are two different Medicare plans to choose from, the Medicare Supplemental plans or the Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) fills in some of the gap on the expenses that Part A and Part B don’t cover. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans combined Part A, Part B and Part D plus extra benefits such vision, hearing, dental, free gym membership. Although Medicare may seem to be a complex matter, we can help you find the plan that best meets your needs. Areas of our services: Medicare Part D, Medicare Advantage (Part C), and Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap). We are proud to provide Medicare Educational workshops via Zoom or in person.

Life Insurance is actually a love policy. It provides benefits directly to you and your family and your loved ones and your business. Most people think life insurance is good to have if you have a family. That is an old concept. These days life insurance has more additional benefits such as chronic illness, critical illness so you, the insured, can take money out from the death benefit to take care of yourself. The greatest benefit of life insurance is tax free death benefit, and in the state of Oregon, it protects from creditors. Each case may have similar needs, however, designing a case is unique and specific to each individual’s needs. We specialize in meeting clients’ needs. Areas of our services: Individual, Business, Estate Planning for Term and Permanent Life.

DENTISTS IN SURVEY SAY

Brushing Too Hard Causes Sensitive Teeth ALSO: ACIDIC FOODS AND DRINKS LEAD TO SENSITIVE TEETH

B

rushing your teeth too hard and consumption of acidic food and beverages are the leading contributors of sensitive teeth, according to a nationwide survey of dentists.

One-third of 700 dentists surveyed by the Academy of General Dentistry say acidic foods and beverages are the most common contributors to tooth sensitivity, followed by toothbrushing technique. Sensitive teeth is a condition that’s a result of nerve irritation in the tooth. It’s characterized by discomfort or sharp and sudden pain in one or more teeth and is often set off by hot or cold foods or drinks, breathing in cold air, or pressure on the teeth. The condition affects at least 40 million American adults, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. Van B. Hayward, DMD, professor in the department of oral rehabilitation in the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia, says aggressive toothbrushing and consumption of acidic substances can wear down the enamel on teeth and also affect the gums. “When the protective layer of enamel erodes or gum lines recede, a softer tissue in your teeth called dentin can be left exposed,” Hayward says in a news release. “Dentin connects to the tooth’s inner nerve center, so when it is unprotected, the nerve center can be left unshielded and vulnerable to sensations, including pain.” The survey also showed that dentists say that certain toothpastes, mouthwashes, tooth-whitening products, broken or cracked teeth, bulimia, and acid reflux also contribute to enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends the following steps be taken to alleviate sensitive teeth: • Switch to a desensitizing toothpaste. • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. • Practice good oral hygiene, which means flossing regularly and brushing at least twice a day for two or three minutes. • Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, brush gently in a circular motion, and hold the toothbrush in your fingertips – not in the palm of your hand. • Avoid acidic foods and drinks (like soft drinks and citrus foods). HISTORY

YAMHILL COUNTY FAIR

Oregon’s Oldest Fair By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

I

n the heart of the Willamette Valley, Yamhill County Fair is Oregon’s oldest fair!

Now that COVID restrictions are being lifted and we are finally starting to venture out from under our protective shells, it’s both comforting and exciting to hear that many of the events and activities we missed out on this past year are also beginning to return. We live in a beautiful state filled with rich traditions. One of those traditions that many of us hold near and dear to our hearts, but have perhaps taken for granted in previous years, is the county fair. And none is more dear to us, or more historic, than the Yamhill County Fair. The first Yamhill County Fair was held on October 7th, 1854, in Lafayette. Yes, you read that right, 1854; almost 170 years ago! To put that in perspective, that was a time when thousands of people were still immigrating here on the Oregon Trail, and Oregon wasn’t even admitted to the union as a state until 1859! The first state fair wasn’t held until 1861 in Oregon City, so the Yamhill County Fair actually predates a huge chunk of our state’s history, and is a tradition well worth celebrating on its own accord. Amazingly, that first fair wasn’t as dissimilar to what we enjoy today as you might think. While they, of course, did not have the big flashy carnival rides or concerts acts, they did have plenty of displays with bed quilts, produce, butter, cheese, cattle, sheep, hogs, farm implements, horses, mules, and more. So if you consider the fair as a dual-sided coin with one side being the rides and entertainment, and the other being the “country craft” side, it’s only the entertainment side of the coin that is new. That said, over the years there have been many changes to the facilities and even the location of the fairgrounds. The current site is on 30 acres with housing for exhibits and animals, as well as a show arena that’s open year-round for shows and youth events. The property is located at the center of Yamhill County in the heart of wine country. The facilities host the Yamhill

County Fair and Rodeo every year, as well as a variety of events throughout the year including trade shows, conferences, parties, weddings, banquets, horse shows, and even dog shows. They have the ability to accommodate indoor and outdoor events of all types! Current manager, Gary Wertz has been working as a volunteer at the fairgrounds for over 20 years. I had the pleasure of speaking with him, and it was immediately evident that he has a sincere and earnest love for Yamhill County and his role in helping to support and bring the community together during each of these events. COVID has been difficult on so many of us, both personally and professionally, but for the county fair, it was a monumental tragedy. Last year was the first time they’ve been unable to open since World War II - that’s nearly 80 years! Since the fair grounds are not tax-funded, they rely on rental fees and ticket sales in order to stay afloat. Although they had one or two buildings open for individuals to rent out last year, the vast majority of the facilities were closed entirely. They weren’t able to hold any big events at all, and that put a huge dent in their coffers, to say the least. So this year it’s incredibly important that we all get back out there, start renting the spaces again, and get ready to go enjoy the awesome fair and rodeo. It’s good for not only our own psyches, but for the community as a whole! And what a line-up they have planned to get everyone back out there! Gary was extremely excited to announce these big-name acts they have scheduled: August 4th: Craig Morgan - Country Music icon, Billboard chart topper, and Army veteran. August 5th: Mitchell Tenpenny Country Music up-and-comer, with his platinum-certified #1 single, “Drunk Me.” August 6th: Ned Ledoux - son to Country superstar Chris Ledoux, who began playing in his father’s band and

Derby is back. The open class exhibits for arts and crafts are back, and according to Gary, with everyone spending more time at home this past year, they have had more submissions than usual, so there will be plenty to see! 4H & FFA exhibits and classes have also returned, including horticulture. Back are the beautiful and bizarre flowers and vegetables. Back are the animals, the food booths and the carnival rides. Everything that we all know and love about the fair has returned and it’s better than ever! After a year of deprivation, I think we’re all ready to enjoy ourselves to the fullest, and not take these pleasures for granted for a change.

has now established himself in the genre with two successful albums under his belt. August 7th: Quiet Riot - Last but certainly not least, you are all invited to come out and “Bang Your Head[s]” with a group that’s ranked in the top 100 of VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock; their album “Metal Health” was the first heavy metal album to top the Billboard charts. Besides all that, you can expect a return of all that was great about the fair prior to COVID. They will have not 1... not 2... but 3 nights of fantastic rodeo entertainment! The Demolition

Gary was very adamant about wanting to extend his sincerest thanks to his volunteers; they are like a big family and he loves all of them. He couldn’t do this without them, and is even hoping to grow their happy family. After COVID closed them down last year, they lost some of their volunteers and are looking for more, so if you love the fair and want to help out, please hop on their website: co.yamhill.or.us/fair and fill out an application. They’d love to have you! The county fair brings the community together. It brings people from all walks of life. Whether you are a volunteer, a participant, an exhibitor, or a spectator, it’s the one time of year we all take some time to eat a funnel cake and have some good old fashioned fun! Gary, the board, and his team of volunteers have worked incredibly hard over the years to provide you with the safest, and most entertaining fair in the land, so please come out in support of all of their hard work.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 8 CELEBRATES GLOBAL

Sleep Under The Stars Night Whether it’s in the backcountry or your own backyard, one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the outdoors is to spend a night under the stars. Gazing up at the night sky gives us a sense of peace and, at the same time, an overwhelming sense of awe. HOW TO OBSERVE #SleepUnderTheStarsNight Let’s do this! Make a day of it on August 8th. Set up camp in your backyard, pitch a tent on the patio, bring blankets to the rooftop, or lay your sleeping bags out on the back deck and turn your gaze upward. The celebration lands in the middle of the Perseid meteor showers! So, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, look northeast for the best view and count the shooting stars as you fall into a peaceful sleep. Make it an annual tradition and share your experiences using #SleepUnderTheStarsNight or #EBUnderTheStars on social media. GLOBAL SLEEP UNDER THE STARS DAY HISTORY Founded in 2020, Global Sleep Under The Stars is a unique way to encourage the world to experience the beauty of the outdoors under the same night sky. Jeff Jurrens By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

eff spends his days painting in a studio on a Chehalem Mountain ridge in Cornelius, which he shares with his wife Toni, who does ceramics work. Interestingly, it took two hairpin career changes to get there. The original plan was to play the piano, so he got formal training in composition at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Then, he spent the next 30 years as a firefighter before retiring as a Hillsboro fire marshal in 2005. Then came the Rothko. For a full half hour in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, he stood in front of a painting by the legendary painter, “transfixed.” Toni suggested that if he loved it so much he should paint himself. He’s been doing so for ten years - all the while listening to music, his first love. The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity: How do you get your ideas or inspiration for a piece? “I think a lot about color, shapes, and the sequence of making a piece. Concepts just assemble in my head. Occasionally I have a complete vision & some of my best stuff comes then. Generally, it’s an interactive process. Accidents are the path to original work. In other words, I paint over stuff a lot. What I don’t do is paint ideas or messages or intend meaning. I do it to please myself.” Describe the process of making a painting, from start to finish. “In the beginning, I just bought paint and

started doing something. It was the way I learned what I could do. Nowadays I have some concept either hazy or formed, colors being the first concern. As I’ve gained more control over what I want, I take more time, work in layers and try to discipline myself to not work too fast. Paintings now take a week or more.” Do you listen to music while painting? “I can’t paint without it. All kinds. From Debussy to Miles Davis, lots of R&B, ambient, Afro-pop, Brazilian and Jon Hassell. I have no doubt it influences the work in some way but it’s subconscious, if it does.” And you share the space with Toni? “Toni started doing hand-built ceramics in high school and always wanted to get back to it. She makes dinnerware, vases, nameplates/signs and is looking for new niches to work. Toni still has a full-time job but will retire in a couple years, and her business plan for Crusty Eye Ranch Studios is our future.” How may people see and buy your work? “People can contact us through the website at www.jeffjurrens.com, and I’m also on Instagram @jeff.jurrens.”

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Banner Furniture & Mattress F By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Brubaker Photography

urniture is something we all own, and it’s very personal. It’s a reflection of who we are: our tastes, our aesthetic, and it’s important to find pieces that fit our style. It’s also a purchase that generally comes at considerable cost. Next to our homes, automobiles, and tech gadgets, our furniture is likely some of the most expensive items that we own. That’s why it’s imperative that we can rely on the businesses we purchase from, and that’s why you should look no further than Banner Furniture & Mattress in Hillsboro! Family-owned and operated since 1980, they strive to not only offer the best selection in the area, but also the best service. James Thurber and his mom Cathy co-own the store together, and they are genuinely sincere about wanting to provide the absolute best experience for every customer walking through their doors. They also work hard to consistently maintain the family atmosphere they’ve established for both employees and customers. At Banner, they pride themselves on the fact that they have been around for over 40 years, and they aren’t going anywhere! When you do business with them, you can rest assured that you won’t have any problems down the line. They are established in the community and engaged in their work, but this is not just any old job to them; being a family business means this is who they are, and that is absolutely reflected in their attitudes towards their customers and their community. They truly go out of their way to do right by every customer and to make them customers for life! You don’t have to take James’ word for it either. Go to their website and check out the testimonials. They have carefully cultivated a very relaxed atmosphere where you can feel comfortable browsing with no pressure to buy. Buying furniture isn’t just a necessity. It’s an expression of ourselves and as such, it should be more than just an errand or something to check off our to-do list. It should be an experience; something that elevates our day to day lives. We should be able to get assistance and ideas from experienced salespeople who actually want to help us find the perfect items, not just make a sale. That’s what Banner Furniture is all about. Even better, they carry all of the best brands that you know and love, and they carry them at affordable prices. Because they are a family, and because they’ve been in business so long, they’ve developed fantastic long-term relationships with their vendors. That means that they will often be able to provide better products (sometimes even hard-tofind items) at cheaper prices than many other stores. Right now they have a warehouse full of beautiful, in-style furniture, and they can provide same day or next day white-glove delivery on many items that you can’t even find anywhere else. With the supply chain being less than reliable in many situations, competitors often have wait times as long as 6 months! But because they planned ahead, Banner already has tons of amazing items in stock just waiting for you to bring them home. Family-owned and operated by active members of the communities they serve (including sponsorship of many local sports teams and donating mattresses to low income families), Banner Furniture is the perfect place to buy your next piece. Support local businesses and come on down to view their fantastic selection today! Banner Furniture & Mattress is conveniently located at 4871 SE Tualatin Valley Hwy in Hillsboro. RECIPE

Refreshing Summer Drinks Hot summer weather means we need to stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water, of course, but when you want something more flavorful, try out some of these ideas to keep things interesting.

WATERMELON LEMONADE:

CUCUMBER MINT GLOW WATER

DOLE WHIP LEMONADE

Combine half watermelon juice and half lemonade. To make it even more fun, freeze watermelon chunks ahead of time to use in place of ice cubes. They won’t water down your drink, and you have a snack once they thaw!

In a pitcher, mix 3 cans of seltzer with slices of cucumber and lemon, then add 3 sprigs of mint. Stir/muddle to release more flavor. So refreshing!

In a blender combine 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup lemonade, and 1/2 cup coconut milk. Blend until smooth, then pour and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings *recipes reprinted from delish.com

SEASONAL

CELEBRATING SMILES National Smile Week By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

he second week of August is National Smile Week, an effort that was primarily started as a campaign to focus on dental health. While oral hygiene is of the utmost importance and should not be overlooked, I think that this year in particular (after 18 months of covering our faces), National Smile Week may have acquired an additional layer of significance. How long has it been since we ventured out into public and could clearly see the faces of everyone around us? How many months have we gone without seeing the smiles of the people we interact with on a daily basis? After all of this time, let’s take the opportunity to appreciate the impact that smiling has on our lives, our relationships, and our wellbeing. First of all, smiling can actually make you happier. We’ve all heard the saying “fake it till you make it,” and smiling is a great example of how this works. Say you’re having a terrible, no-good, very bad day. You can frown your way through it, which will actually make your mood worse, or you can smile. The facial muscles used to smile trigger neurotransmitters in the brain that have the power to make us feel happier. These include the natural antidepressants dopamine and serotonin, as well as endorphins, which help us relax. Ever heard the old adage that “laughter is the best medicine”? There’s a reason for that. In order to laugh you must smile first, which we already know changes brain chemistry, and when you have more “happy hormones” that directly affects your body. Smiling can not only reduce stress and make us feel happier, but some studies have found that it may also improve our immune systems and help us fight off illness.

Believe it or not, faking a smile when you’re stressed can also help protect your heart. Just as it directly affects the brain, smiling can also reduce the increase in heart rate and breathing that we naturally experience under pressure. So the next time you’re struggling with a difficult situation, rather than letting your frown bring you down, try turning it around! You may be surprised how much better you feel. Smiling also affects our confidence and sociability. When we smile, we appear more approachable, friendly, relaxed, and (as an added bonus) younger! A genuine smile makes you seem open to others, which in turn makes others want to be around you. Better social interactions and improved relationships are big boosters when it comes to confidence and self esteem. Not to mention that smiling is contagious! After this last year and a half, that word may not be the most appealing one to use, but it’s true. Thankfully this is the kind of contagion that we want to spread. When interacting with others, we have a natural reaction called “facial mimicry,” meaning that when someone smiles at us, we do the same. When you smile at someone else, they are likely to smile back, and thus gain all the benefits of smiling that were previously mentioned. Smile at someone today and you might just start a mood boosting chain reaction! There you have it. Smiling is a crucial factor in improving our emotions, our health, and our relationships. Make it a point to smile as much as possible today, and don’t forget to take care of that smile by making regular visits to your dentist! As Nat King Cole soulfully crooned, “Light up your face with gladness, hide every trace of sadness… You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile.” *info from registrypartners.com and hillcountryoralsurgery.com

SERVICE ABOVE SELF NEWBERG ROTARIANS: DOING GOOD FOR DECADES The Four Way Test and the idea of service above self are some of the guiding principles that help make Rotary such an outstanding organization. The Four Way Test asks: “Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?” Since its inception in 1935, the Newberg Rotary Club has strived to live up to the Four Way Test. Through many service projects and times of fellowship, Newberg Rotarians demonstrate truthfulness, and fairness while building goodwill and better friendships amongst the Club and the local community. Hopefully, by interacting with Club members, attending Club events or meetings, or visiting the club website, you will find opportunities to see how this group puts service above self for the benefit of Newberg and communities throughout the world. The Rotary Club of Newberg was organized December 20, 1935 and received its charter on February 5, 1936, with 22 charter members, becoming the 3,910th club in Rotary International which was in 79 different countries. The charter presentation was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Portland and was presided over by District Governor Stanley Long of Seattle. Today there are over 35,000 clubs around the world in 200 countries with over 1.2 million members. Until the 1960s the Rotary Club of Newberg met for its weekly Wednesday luncheon at the Chamber of Commerce rooms, above City Hall, then moved to Bowman’s Restaurant at 400 East First Street (currently occupied by Lucky Fortune Chinese Restaurant). It outgrew Bowman’s and moved to Riverwood Golf Clubhouse (located west of Dundee) in 1974. Meetings were moved back to Newberg in 1978 to the Chehalem Park and Recreation District Center and later to the Cap and Gown Room at George Fox University’s Heacock

Commons. In 2016 the growth of George Fox University resulted in the club moving their meetings to the Chehalem Cultural Center. Through the years the Rotary Club of Newberg has been involved in countless community projects and events. Some of the the more notable activities/projects that Newberg Rotary participated in through the years include helping Pacific College (now GFU) fund and build a dormitory, helping GFU to purchase and acquire the Hoover-Minthorn House, donations of Thanksgiving meals, various projects for local schools including dozens of annual scholarships, sponsorships of various scout troops, the annual Pancake Breakfast, building of Memorial Park Restrooms, international dental projects, various community safety events, annual pumpkin contests, fruitcake sales, auctions, the purchasing and installation of playground equipment, the erection of Rotary Centennial Park, and so many more. The Rotary Club of Newberg has a rich history of making an impact locally as well as around the world and welcomes other good people to join in on serving the community. The Newberg Club often helps other individuals or service groups on new projects, so please don’t hesitate to invite our club to participate in new ideas or service projects. Note: As part of the club’s celebration of its 80th anniversary in 2016, Britta Stewart was hired through the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce Internship Program. During the summer of 2016 Britta, a junior history major at George Fox University, went through years of Rotary club documents and interviewed a number of past presidents. Her work is a valuable history of our club as well as the Newberg community. For her complete history, go to: Newbergrotary.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/NewbergNoon-Rotary-History.pdf
