TASTE OF THE TOWN

THE FOOD CARTS OF NEWBERG BY DAVID BATES ACTIVE MEDIA CONTRIBUTING WRITER

PHOTOS BY TERESA TINGLEY

F

ood carts have come a long way through the centuries. You can trace them all the way back to the rickety hand-pushed or even animal-drawn contraptions in ancient Greece and Rome. In the U.S. they’re known to have exploded with the rise of the railroad, and more recently they’ve become a familiar staple at carnivals and fairs. But in the last 15 years or so there’s been a food cart Renaissance of sorts, with dozens of them popping up in nearly every town and city. Two years ago, the Oregon Mobile Food Association formed to advocate for the increasingly dynamic and diverse food cart industry, which boosted their growth and popularity even further. Food carts (or trucks) are now officially a trend, a scene of their own, and Newberg has one of these scenes. You’ll find most of them at the city’s nearly 3-year-old food truck pod, the Bite of Newberg, located at 910 E 1st St. Hours for each truck vary, but all are listed online (along with menus for most) at Bite of Newberg (www.NewbergFoodPod.com). Maybe you’ve already got a favorite one to visit, where you order the same thing again and again, but why not expand your culinary horizons when you’re out and about? Here’s a list of several of the options you’ll find in Newberg’s bustling food truck court

Hunnybeez

American Filipino Fusion is literally a blending of American grilling and barbecue with Filipino dishes, according to owner Andrew Wegman, who runs the truck with Honey Blossom Robles. This is the place to expand your palate and discover new favorites, like a Lumpia Plate - that’s a Filipino eggroll -- including veggie, smoked pork, Shanghai, or smoked chopped brisket. If you’re not ready to be an adventurous eater, ease your way into some zesty islandic influences with a tasty twist on a plain old American burger. The top sellers (which have a pound of meat!) are

6  Newberg To Advertise Community WithAdvantage Us, Call 503.825.2111 Magazine | To Advertise: 503.825.2111

the bacon double onion melt and the Bumblebeez. You can find out more about their food and schedule on their facebook page, at www.facebook.com/HunnyBeezFoodTruck.

G&W Caribbean Smoked BBQ

If you are looking to experience the savory cuisine of the Caribbean without ever leaving town, the dishes they serve here will transport

you nicely. The cart doesn’t open to customers until 11 am, but they’re up before sunrise getting the smoked BBQ fixings (purchased from a local farm) ready to use in their sandwiches or just to be eaten a’la carte. The must-try item here is the signature smoked mac and cheese. Drop by or give them a call, they’re also available for catering. You can get more information at www.NewbergFoodPod.com.

Bangkok Noi Thai

If you’ve got a hankering for a steaming, flavorful plate of Pad Thai noodles but not a lot of time, this place has you covered. They serve delicious noodles and so much more. Their promise: “Our food has such a dynamic vibrant flavor that you’ll instantly be transported to old Bangkok.” The menu offers a full range of small bites (think potstickers, chicken satay and crispy spring rolls), five varieties of Thai curry dishes, traditional rice plates and, of course, noodles. Wash it down with a refreshing Thai iced tea. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, and you can find out more about their menu on their facebook page.

Gifft

You may want to spend some time looking over the extensive menu before you try this one. Their speciality is “comfort food, with a gourmet twist in every item.” In the gourmet department you’ll find a fantastic selection of house sauces and seasonings that can be served up mild or (if Carolina Reaper means anything to you) HOT. Look for tots, fries, onion rings, wings, shrimp, fish and chips, pot stickers and a “super juicy burger” with more than twenty toppings to choose from. If there’s anything you should know before you go, it’s that this deep fried paradise “is not your run-of-the-mill street food experience.” You can find them on facebook, or see their menu at www.NewbergFoodPod.com.

Bobablastic

Bobablastic’s drink and topping combos have been a hit since the Oregon company rolled out their secret Traditional Honey Boba in 2016. For the Boba newbies out there, “Boba” is short for Bubble tea, which came out of Taiwan in the 1980s. It’s shaken with ice to create a foamy layer on top that’s spackled with toppings. More than fifty combinations are commonly available, although if you do the math with the ingredients, more than 6,000 combinations are possible. What better time to start trying all of them than this summer? They have several locations throughout Oregon, and you can get more information about their bubble teas, as well as food and dessert options at bobablastic.com.

La Gran Victoria

We can talk all day about which Mexican restaurant has the best tacos, but let’s get real: the best tacos are always street tacos. La Gran Victoria offers a full range of fresh meats: steak, shredded and marinated pork, chicken and chorizo, along with more exotic fare like beef head, beef tongue and tripe. The tamale department even offers some unique variety, as you can get banana leaf wrapped

tamales in addition to the traditional corn leaf. Be sure to check out the selection of tortas and enchiladas as well. Find them on facebook for more information.

Marisco’s Maggie

Marisco’s Maggie is like having a bunch of food trucks in one food truck: No matter what you’re craving, they probably have it: tacos, seafood salads, shrimp burritos, burgers, plenty of sandwiches, and a dash of the South with shrimp and fish poboys. More? Fish and chips, corn dogs, fries, tots... What are you waiting for? Check out their menu on the Bite of Newberg website.

Hooknladderpizza

Though not technically part of the Bite of Newberg collection, this is also a must-try. Pizza baked and served out of a refurbished fire truck that roams the area. Owned and operated by David Bensch and wife Laura Clendenin, this 1980 Pierce pumper truck came all the way from Midvale, Ohio. The 42-inch brick wood-fire pizza oven cranks out your standard pies with fresh ingredients, like the Chef ’s Special, which includes crispy chicken and bacon with white sauce. “When the oven’s at 750 degrees, it takes about six minutes to cook,” Bensch says. Check their Facebook page or hooknladderpizza.net for their hours and to see where they are located at the moment.

RECIPE

EASIEST EVER BLACKBERRY CHIA JAM Prep: 5 min

Cook: 15 min

Total: 20 min

August

in the Pacific NW means that blackberries are abounding nearly everywhere. What better way to use up your abundance of local blackberries than making some delicious jam? There are many ways to do so, but this recipe is the easiest by far. It’s made with just a few clean ingredients, thickened naturally with superfood Chia seeds, and the sweetener can be changed to fit nearly any dietary need, including paleo or keto options. Best of all, it takes only 20 minutes and there’s no canning required! This jam tastes wonderful on toast or pastries, served with cheese, or as a dessert topping. (Note: This recipe can be made Recipe reprinted from twopeasandtheirpod.com with almost any berry, although blueberries and strawberries will not break down as easily as blackberries or raspberries, so your 1. In a medium-sized pot, bring the blackberries to a low boil, stirring frequently. jam will turn out a bit chunkier.) Reduce heat to low and simmer until the berries soften, about 5 minutes. Lightly mash the berries with a potato masher or fork. Leave some berries in chunks for texture, if you want.

Instructions:

Ingredients:

• 1 pound Blackberries, fresh or frozen • 2-3 tablespoons sweetener of choice (monkfruit for keto, pure maple syrup for paleo) • 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice (optional) • 2-3 tablespoons Chia seeds • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

2. Stir in the sweetener, lemon or lime juice (if using), and Chia seeds. Cook the jam on low until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure you stir the jam so it doesn’t stick. 3. Remove jam from heat and stir in the vanilla extract (if using). Let jam cool to room temperature. Pour in a glass jar or air-tight container and store in the refrigerator. This jam will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It can also be frozen in an air-tight container.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

MIGHTY CLEAN CARPET CLEANING Written By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

“Gosh, those are MIGHTY CLEAN CARPETS!”

J

ust ask Josh Vorderstrasse, owner and operator of Mighty Clean Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Service in Yamhill County. He knows this business better than most, which he can attribute to the early start he got back in the seventh grade. His father started the business down in Salem in 1995, and Josh would go to work for his dad during his winter and summer breaks from school. Initially it was just that; a part-time, “helping out dad” type of venture. Eventually though, Josh came to realize he sincerely enjoyed the work and once he was old enough, decided to branch out independently. He bought himself a van and the requisite equipment and started his own branch of the business servicing the Newberg and McMinnville area. “What really appealed to me,” Josh says, “was the flexibility in the work and the hours, as well as the personal relationships I’m able to build with my customers.” Josh is a family man with two beautiful young kids of his own now, and he loves running a business that allows him to make a living while still balancing time with his family. In addition, each day is a new adventure 12  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

bringing fresh challenges and variety to his work. Especially with living in the Northwest, where we can have such inclement weather, researching and discovering new ways to get all manner of dirt, sap and ground-in plant particles out of your carpets can be quite a challenge to overcome. Perhaps Josh’s most impressive quality, beyond his diligence and commitment to quality service, is his charming and friendly demeanor. “One of the most important aspects of this business is customer service,” he said. “I’m going into peoples’ homes. I can clean their carpets better than anyone in town but if I’m not personable - if I’m not giving them the best customer service they’ve ever had, I don’t get called back”. Josh’s friendly persona is not simply an act he puts on for the job, however. He genuinely is a really nice guy, and his main concern is doing the best job possible to clean your carpets and making you feel comfortable having him in your home on top of it. What sets Josh apart from other carpet cleaners, you may be asking? Well, besides the fact that he’s going to be your new best

friend, Josh has set up his business in such a way as to virtually guarantee your satisfaction. First of all, he has taken all the guesswork out of his pricing. He has a very straightforward and simple cost structure with NO HIDDEN FEES! You know exactly what you will be paying before he even arrives at your house, and his prices are both affordable and competitive.

services come at easy and affordable fixed prices. He can do pet treatments, deodorizers, stain guards, deep soil extractions and emergency water extractions. Josh can even venture outside to clean the fabrics in your vehicle, boat or RV! Made a huge sticky mess last time you went through the drivethrough? Let Josh come and take care of it for you. He’ll return it to its former glory, or even better.

Secondly, Josh is the owner and sole operator of Mighty Clean. There are no other employees working for him. He’s THE guy; the one you will speak to on the phone, and the one you will meet in person when he comes to your house, each and every time. He’s also the guy who takes pride in his business and does a superior job without any of the petty shortcuts you might get from some of his competitors. Even if you have a particularly difficult stain or spot, he will do his absolute best to get it clean without nickel-and-diming you for extra chemicals needed for the job.

On the commercial side, Josh can spruce up that dingy old office carpet for you in a jiffy. No office is too big or too small; the pricing structure is just based on square footage in this case (which is twenty cents per square foot). He can also take on any multi-family dwelling such as a condo or apartment complex and has separate specials for those as well.

“He’s THE guy; the one you will speak to on the phone, and the one you will meet in person when he comes to your house, each and every time.”

Josh doesn’t limit himself to just cleaning carpets, by the way. He’s also a pro when it comes to freshening up your upholstery, including couches, loveseats and recliners. As always, these

The bottom line is this: without a doubt, Josh is going to earn your repeated business. He’s going to show up on time, he’s going to win you over with his friendly personality, and he’s going to deliver the best cleaning your carpets and upholstery have ever had. Don’t wait through another winter with dingy, dirty carpets. Call him up at 503-956-6148 to schedule your service today!

ART & CULTURE

MEET THE VOCALIST

ERIN MCCARTHY She’s Got Talent! by David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

I

f you’ve spent any of your summer quarantine time watching NBC’s America’s Got Talent, then you may have seen Newberg’s own Erin McCarthy wow the judges with a bit of opera delivered while astride her horse, Etta. “I love that I am the first opera singer to bring Wagner to reality television,” Erin says. “That gives me a giggle for sure.” Erin’s musical life didn’t start with opera, but she did enjoy classical and symphonic music. Growing up in Sandy, Erin recalls that her mother would play old-school Disney records with “those wonderful, lush orchestrations… and Fantasia! And lots of Gershwin. I would drop whatever I was doing and run around in circles whenever I heard Rhapsody in Blue.” Erin started taking voice lessons in high school and realized she’d found her passion. “I studied voice in college and then moved to Boston after being at Portland State University in the ‘golden years’ of the voice program,” she said. “I sang professionally out there for a few years before moving back. She has appeared onstage throughout the Pacific Northwest, across New England, and in Europe as some of opera’s most distinguished roles: Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Mimi in La Boheme and the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro. These days, you’re more likely to find her at home on her Newberg farm, where over the years she has built a highly regarded singleteacher voice studio, where she instructs young students and professional singers alike. “When I start working with a student, we’ll assess what their goals are, and come up with a way forward,” 18  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

she says. “Success to me is when milestones on that plan are achieved.”

Erin McCarthy

“I enjoy working with students at all ability levels, but I love working with folks who have big, ambitious goals,” Erin added. “I adore breaking down big ol’ problems, putting together a plan, and then seeing it through.” Erin’s student load is full at the moment with a waiting list, as she’s downsized a bit so she can keep an eye on her five-yearold, and they have plenty of company on the farm. “Oh man, our farm is magical,” she says. “We have alpacas, goats, chickens, and four horses. It’s ten acres up on Chehalem Mountain, and I love it. I do dressage when I’m not singing, and my whole life I’ve only ever been interested in singing, performing and horses.” If you caught her America’s Got Talent segment, you know that Erin sometimes combines singing and her farm animals. Recently, her performances singing alongside animals have become a YouTube sensation. “I started back in March on a lark, to give my friends a hoot by singing a Wagner aria in a stall,” she said. “It went viral! The alpaca video got picked up by some huge classical media. It’s pretty funny!” Erin is still in the running (as of this writing) with America’s Got Talent, but you can also hear more of her singing by visiting her website at www.eringmccarthy.com, barnyard performances included!

ow that the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg has resumed operations after closing this spring, organizers are hoping to circle back to an important event that COVID19 canceled: The center’s tenth anniversary.

District sold the building to the Chehalem Parks and Recreation District for -- wait for it -- one dollar.

“If the Chehalem Cultural Center has a matron saint, Ground was broken for the non-profit facility it’s Loni Parrish,” says Rick in the heart of downtown in 2009, and in Lee, who sits on the center’s 2010 the first in a (still ongoing) series of board of directors. “She and renovations to the long-vacant elementary about eight women in the early 2000’s put forward the school building that originally went up in 1935 idea that the best use of this as a WPA project was unveiled. building was an arts-based The gallery recently featured a show in which artist Jennifer “We hope to plan a celebration for our 10th Kapnek incorporated tree branches into paintings in a show community center.” anniversary when social distancing restrictions entitled, “Known: An Exploration of the Identity of Trees.” In 2005 a non-profit was begin to relax,” said Carissa Burkett, the center’s curator and director of arts programs. “It’s so difficult to know what formed, and over the next five years money and public interest was raised. An effort to get a bond measure passed was unsuccessful, the future will look like and what we will be able to do, so we are holding off on developing specific plans, but this tenth year will not but thanks to private donations and public grants, the project came together, resulting in one of the Willamette Valley’s largest nongo by uncelebrated in some way. profit art centers. “A lot of thought goes into planning out the exhibitions,” she said. “I try to ensure that there’s a wide variety of mediums, styles, content and themes within the artwork over the year. I also try to showcase a variety of local, regional and national and sometimes international artists. I think through how the various exhibits that are up at the same time throughout the building can have dialogue or shared themes.” As an arts journalist, I’ve seen every exhibit there since June 2018 and can testify to Burkett’s ambition in curating shows, many of which are intriguing and even spectacular. A recent ecologically-themed quilt show featured work from literally all over the country. Also, late last year a show featuring theatrical masks was international in scope and gave the public a chance to inspect masks up close that had only been seen on stage.

The Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, located just north of the city library is open year-round and features more than 30,000-square feet of gallery space, art workshops, performance venues and a culinary center. It opened ten years ago.

“The mask exhibit that took over all of the exhibition spaces at the center last winter was a pretty unique experience for us,” she said. “I think it had the most traffic since I’ve been curating. We had countless visitors of all ages who were in the building for all different activities who would stop in their tracks and become entranced by all the masks.” Currently the center is showcasing 35 years of oil paintings by celebrated Oregon painter Michael Gibbons, who passed away in July at his Toledo home. The show, “The Yaquina Exhibition: A Painted Voice for a Sacred Landscape,” was curated by Burkett and features dozens of paintings depicting the Yaquina watershed near Newport. Along with the galleries, there are also classrooms, glass, ceramics and music studios, meeting space, a black box theater, a ballroom that is frequently packed for public events, and -most recently -- a culinary center. Lee said the center’s first few years were a financial struggle, but then organizers figured out how to produce a steady revenue stream. “Opening the ballroom was a game changer,” he said.

“We changed our operating model from being mostly reliant on contributed income to earned income, mostly from renting out that space and other rooms in the Center.” Burkett said the center is still moving forward on a capital campaign to remodel the unfinished, 250-seat upstairs theater, among other secondLast year the Chehalem center hosted a spectacular floor amenities, show, curated by Carissa Burkett and filling several including a galleries, featuring theatrical masks made by artists movement studio. from all over the world. “It’s a difficult time to be fundraising, but a lot of the funds for the project have already been raised, so we are just working on the final stretch and are still hopeful that we can stay on target,” she said. “The community has always been so generous in supporting the center and it’s growth and with the economic impact of COVID-19, it may be more difficult for people to financially contribute to our fundraising initiatives, but I do not foresee a diminished desire for this beautiful theater in our county.” The center isn’t just a place to come and look - it’s also a place to come and make! When in operation, the center offers a variety of arts classes and workshops for people of all ages. Writers are encouraged to bring their work for open mic events as well. The center is also a hub throughout the year for several major events in the community: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Willamette Valley Lavender Festival and Paint-out, and the Camellia Festival. Also, a free summer concert series, Tunes on Tuesday, is held weekly on the center’s sprawling plaza.

The Chehalem Cultural Center is located at 415 E Sheridan Street in Newberg. Hours are 9am to 6pm Tuesday-Saturday. For more information, call 503-487-6883 or visit www.ChehalemCulturalCenter.org today! Newberg Community Advantage Magazine  25

K&L Industries THE MOST TRUSTED PAVING COMPANY IN PORTLAND by Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

O

ne of the most compelling things about Keith Callaway, the founder of K&L Industries, is his honesty. In a world where consumers are unfortunately taken advantage of all too often, it’s comforting to know that there are people like Keith out there; honest people who can be trusted to do the job you hired them for and do it right the first time. When speaking with him, it quickly becomes quite evident that Keith is not trying to sell you anything. He doesn’t have to. The quality of work that K&L does sells itself. Keith has worked tirelessly over the past 35 years to grow his business from the fledgling enterprise it started as into the well-oiled machine it is today. It took a lot of hard work, dedication, trial and error but the destination has proven to be well worth the long ride. Keith is a practical man. His initial forays into general contracting didn’t take him where he needed to go, so when his new bride’s family introduced him to the more lucrative business of paving, Keith jumped right in. Knowing he would soon be a father, he wasted no time getting himself established in the business, and in 1984 he founded K&L Industries. The company did well and for the first 25 years or so things were solid; consistent. The rollercoaster ride came in 2008 when the country went into recession and the big “drop” occurred. Keith and his wife had to go through some serious soul searching but when they came out the other side, if a little bloodied and bruised, they were also wiser. Stock was taken and changes were made. New machinery was purchased, new training programs were developed, hiring qualifications were updated and implemented, and most importantly according to Keith, a new corporate culture was devised. With these modifications in place, the last five years have seen the business flourish and achieve new heights of success. Keith says that as far as the work goes, they are now able to do things he never dreamed were possible when he started. K&L Industries does all aspects of commercial and residential paving: new paving jobs, maintenance, repair, sealcoating, and milling (asphalt grinding). They do it with the best equipment, and they have a terrific team focused on providing customers with the best value for their money. All this and they’re also a locallyowned, family-run business in the truest sense. Keith’s wife (known affectionately as the “company mom”) and his eldest son help him run the business, and every employee is considered family. The sincere dedication and respect that envelops their whole team extends to their customers as well, and that’s no joke. Check out their facebook page and see all the testimonials from their very pleased clients. Keith and his company are the real deal. If you need asphalt work done anywhere in the area (and let’s face it, in the rainy Northwest many of us do) don’t hesitate to contact K&L Industries. Call them at 503-266-1130 or visit their new website at www. kandlindustries.com for more information. ■

THE GREAT OUTDOORS! by Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

ravel may be severely restricted at the moment and many summer vacation plans have had to be cancelled, but that doesn’t have to keep you from enjoying a getaway right here in our own backyard. Many State Parks and campgrounds have reopened, and Oregon is abundant with beautiful hiking trails that can be explored while maintaining safe distance from others. Some parks remain closed and others may have limited access to facilities, so be sure to check the status of wherever you may be headed at stateparks.oregon.gov before you venture out. That being said, here are a few places nearby that are open and ready for visitors:

here. The park is open for day use with a permit from 8am to 9pm, although the Visitor Center and park office remain closed, and limited camping may also be available with reservations. Silver Falls State Park is another gem of the Willamette Valley. For those looking for a good way to stretch their legs, the Trail of 10 Falls is a stunning hike that is known nationwide for displaying the tremendous beauty of Oregon, and it clocks in at just over 7 miles. There’s one important rule, though: for their own safety, pets are not allowed on this hike. However, there are other trails throughout the park that are not only pet-friendly, but also allow for mountain biking and guided horseback rides. The park is open for day use (parking permit required) and camping (with reservations) although some facilities remain closed.

BUDGET BLINDS

Milo McIver State Park near Estacada is open for both day use and camping. This park allows for a huge variety of activities, including hiking, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, disc golf, and more. With so many things to do, surrounded by the wondrous beauty of our home state, you may not even miss that cancelled exotic vacation after all. Be aware that there is a parking fee for day use areas, and reservations must be made for campsites on the state park website. Halfway between Portland and Salem and just west of I-5 is the lovely Champoeg State Heritage Area. This site, where Oregon’s first provisional government was formed by a historical vote in 1843, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Situated on the south bank of the Willamette River, Champoeg offers much to be explored. Fishing, hiking, and disc golf are just a few of the activities that can be enjoyed

Just as beautiful as the nearby Opal Creek Wilderness, but generally less crowded, the Little North Santiam Recreation Area also offers lots of ways to escape to nature. Although camping is not permitted at this time, there are dozens of places to spend a perfect day in the great outdoors, including the Canyon Creek and 3 Pools Recreation Areas. If these spots are too popular for your taste, just take a hike! Many of the trails offer access to hidden swimming and fishing holes that you can discover for yourself. Plan to bring plenty of water and snacks, as you’ll likely want to spend your whole day basking in the beauty of this glorious place. Just be sure to clean up after yourself before PHOTOS BY STACY BENNER you leave. ■

History of the Newberg Public Library written by David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

any city libraries across the United States have a common factor in their history: they got their start through the philanthropy of Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The Newberg Public Library is a Carnegie Library, but it also has a story that goes back much farther.

Notes compiled by George Edmonston Jr. of the Newberg Historical Society report that Newberg, which today is Yamhill County’s second-largest city, was actually the first city in the county to open a library for local residents. In fact, it was only the third city in the Portland metro area to do so, after Portland and Forest Grove. For that history, you have to go back three years before the Civil War and one year before the Oregon Territory was admitted to the Union in February 1859. 36  To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

It was in 1858 that a local Sunday school class operated a small library for students in Newberg. The shelves boasted just 160 volumes, mostly songbooks, including the then-popular Sabbath School Gems. A couple of decades later in the 1880s, the Women’s Temperance League in Newberg started buying books with an eye to opening a larger library. The first brick-and-mortar library, per say, was actually under the same roof that housed a butcher shop, a hardware store, a pharmacy and a post office. It was operated by J.T. Smith, an 1876 transplant from Iowa. A February 1925 issue of the Newberg Graphic newspaper quoted a resident as saying that borrowing a book actually wasn’t free: It cost five cents per book. Also, the selection was still not very extensive. There were other efforts on behalf of the library, though they were not all so egalitarian. In March of 1891, a group of local businessmen organized the Whittier Literary Society for the “mutual improvement of its members in all exercises of a literary character.” The group raised money through ticket sales and membership dues and used the money to buy books, papers, magazines and other reading materials to circulate -- but only among the dues-paying members. Edmonston’s history reports that the books from Smith’s store were turned over to Pacific College by the Temperance

History of the Newberg Public Library League in 1893. Smith moved to Washington state and continued to work on library advancement there, leaving Newberg to enter a period in which there was no library that served the general public.

more than 900 were still used as libraries. Two hundred and eighty-six, according to that reported, had been expanded. There have been two major developments in the library’s growth in the last half-century, and the first one had nothing to do with the building. In 1972, the Oregon State Library provided funds for the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments to study the library needs in the tri-county area of Polk, Marion and Yamhill counties. They found that of nearly half a million residents in the area, 100,000 had no local library service because they were not living in a city.

“Today, the library holds more than 90,000 volumes”

That changed in 1907 when nearly twenty representatives from various local civic groups met at the dental office of a “Dr. Harold” to discuss filling the literary void. This group morphed into the Newberg Library Association, which got financial support from the Wednesday Club, a women’s group that hosted fundraisers and also provided funds from dues. The Newberg City Council partnered with the association, and levied a tax to support it, so long as association members would agree to operate it. One week later the association held its first official meeting, where it was decided the library would be free. This library was operated out of a corner in the YMCA room, which was located on the northwest corner of First Street and Meridian. It opened on May 26th, 1908, which is the date when Margaret Inglis, the city’s first librarian, loaned out a book. Operating hours were as humble as the location: 3-5pm and then, presumably after a dinner break, 7-9pm.

It didn’t take long for library organizers to realize that a larger, permanent home would be needed in the growing community. Two years later, in 1910, the association wrote a letter directly to Andrew Carnegie, who had started handing out money for libraries in the early 1880’s. It was one of the greatest acts of philanthropy in American history, and the legacy is still very much alive today. A special library committee received word from James Bertram, Carnegie’s personal secretary, that $10,000 would be given for bricks and mortar so long as Newberg would pledge $1,000 in annual support for the facility, and to provide a space where it could be built. The City of Newberg agreed, Carnegie signed off on the plans early in 1911, and construction started in October of that year. On March 29th, 1912, the Newberg Carnegie Library was dedicated. The 1,000-volume library that opened in 1912 stood at 4,000-square feet, with Inglis still running the show. It is worth noting, more than a century later, that the Newberg library is one of roughly 300 or so Carnegie libraries that continue to be used as a library in an expanded facility. An academic survey in the early 1990s showed that of the original 1,681 Carnegie library buildings in the coutnry, 1,554 still existed and

To resolve this, a cooperative was formed. Initially funded by tax levies and now part of the tax base, the Chemeketa Community Regional Library Service was formed in 1974. A tax base approved in 1985 allowed the CCRLS to automate and link all the catalogs, previously stored on paper index cards in massive photo by Teresa Tingley drawers. That enabled the users of any of the member libraries to search (and more importantly, to borrow from) the holdings of all the libraries collectively. Today, there are 17 libraries in the system, including the library for Chemeketa Community College. Meanwhile, as the library network was coming together in the late 1970s, it became clear that the original 4,000-square-foot building was no longer large enough. Newberg residents Ken and Joan Austin, the family behind the local dental equipment manufacturer, donated land and money was raised through a private gift from the Publisher’s Paper Company, federal funding, and $965,000 in local voter-approved construction bonds. By 1986, nearly 18,000 square-feet had been added to the library. The late Senator Mark O. Hatfield dedicated the expansion on February 15th, 1986. The 100th anniversary of the Newberg Library Association was celebrated in May of 2008. The role played by Carnegie was observed with a centennial celebration in March 2012. Today, the library holds more than 90,000 volumes, and it remains open (albeit with reduced hours) during COVID-19, proving that not even a pandemic can keep a good library down.

The Newberg Public Library is located at 503 E Hancock Street in Newberg. Hours are noon to 6pm Tues-Sat. For more information, call 503-538-7323 or visit www.newbergoregon.gov/library. Newberg Community Advantage Magazine  37

DENTISTS IN SURVEY SAY

Brushing Too Hard Causes Sensitive Teeth

ALSO: ACIDIC FOODS AND DRINKS LEAD TO SENSITIVE TEETH

B

rushing your teeth too hard and consumption of acidic food and beverages are the leading contributors of sensitive teeth, according to a nationwide survey of dentists.

One-third of 700 dentists surveyed by the Academy of General Dentistry say acidic foods and beverages are the most common contributors to tooth sensitivity, followed by toothbrushing technique. Sensitive teeth is a condition that’s a result of nerve irritation in the tooth. It’s characterized by discomfort or sharp and sudden pain in one or more teeth and is often set off by hot or cold foods or drinks, breathing in cold air, or pressure on the teeth. The condition affects at least 40 million American adults, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. Van B. Hayward, DMD, professor in the department of oral rehabilitation in the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia, says aggressive toothbrushing and consumption of acidic substances can wear down the enamel on teeth and also affect the gums. “When the protective layer of enamel erodes or gum lines recede, a softer tissue in your teeth called dentin can be left exposed,” Hayward says in a news release. “Dentin connects to the tooth’s inner nerve center, so when it is unprotected, the nerve center can be left unshielded and vulnerable to sensations, including pain.” The survey also showed that dentists say that certain toothpastes, mouthwashes, tooth-whitening products, broken or cracked teeth, bulimia, and acid reflux also contribute to enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends the following steps be taken to alleviate sensitive teeth: • Switch to a desensitizing toothpaste. • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. • Practice good oral hygiene, which means flossing regularly and brushing at least twice a day for two or three minutes. • Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, brush gently in a circular motion, and hold the toothbrush in your fingertips – not in the palm of your hand. • Avoid acidic foods and drinks (like soft drinks and citrus foods).
