et’s face it Oregonians: the local weather is not kind to our houses. Constant moisture and cold temperatures during the winter months juxtaposed against hot, arid, sometimes drought-like conditions in the summer months leads to expansion and contraction of materials, compromised joints and seals, moss invasion, mold, cracked and dulled paint, and more.

Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy

Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.

Easter Bunny

According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!

Easter Eggs

From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children.

Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter.

Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

Six Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Home Humming This Spring

pring is here, and with it comes warmer, dryer weather.

It’s time to start looking at how your home has fared over the fall and winter, and what you might do to maintain it and get ready for summer. Now is the perfect time to take care of some routine home maintenance to get your household organized for spring and keep it running smoothly and efficiently right through summer.

Winter weather can wreck your home’s exterior, potentially causing an assortment of damage. Now that it’s getting warmer, get outside and take a look around: Clean your gutters. Again. Even though you cleaned them last fall (right?), they can pick up a great deal of debris over the winter. Check for loose and leaky gutters and ensure downspouts are positioned to drain away from your home’s foundation.

Inspect the roof. Your roof is your home’s primary defense against the elements. Visually inspect the roof, looking for signs of warping, cracking and loose shingle or tiles.

Examine f lashing around chimneys, skylights and vents.

Damaged covering and f lashing should be replaced. For roof areas too high to inspect from the ground, hire a licensed roofer to perform the inspection and make necessary repairs.

Check seals around windows and doors. Cold weather can cause seals around windows and doors to loosen, harden or crack. Inspect these areas for damage and make repairs as needed. Sometimes the judicious application of some caulking will prevent air and water intrusion and extend the life of your siding, windows or doors. This will also help reduce summer cooling costs.

And don’t forget to take a look around inside. Just because you have been indoors most of the winter doesn’t mean your home’s interior isn’t in need of a seasonal once-over.

Here are a few areas that merit your attention: o Service your home’s cooling system. No one wants to be caught in the dog days of summer without air conditioning if you can avoid it. It’s a good idea to have your home’s cooling system checked yearly, about one month prior to regular summer usage. o Check smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries.

This is an easy and potentially lifesaving task. Take time now to change the batteries in all your home’s smoke detectors. Better safe than sorry. o Check the connections on all of your water appliances. o Check the shut-off valves and drains under sinks for drips or leaks, your toilets for intermittent running, and your water heater drip pan for moisture. Catching minor drips early helps prevent major problems in the future.

Home maintenance is an important part of home ownership, and vital if you want to maintain or improve your home as an investment. Regular inspections of all parts of your home, inside and out, will help you catch minor problems early and greatly reduce the cost of necessary repairs later. Not an Easter movie, but it’s about a rabbit, so close enough.

From elephants to mice, the metropolis of Zootopia is a melting pot where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first bunny on the Zootopia Police, she realizes how hard it is to bring order to a city of such chaos, especially when you feel so small. Determined to prove herself, Judy leaps at the chance to solve a mysterious case. She’s forced to work with a wily and sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her job impossible. But eventually the two discover, as a small bunny who was once bullied, and a fox who was treated as a thief before he even knew the word, they have more in common than they think!

This 1971 stop motion animated TV special was produced by Rankin/Bass Productions and was based on the 1957 novel The Easter Bunny That Overslept. In this fun and lighthearted flick, Peter Cottontail is a young Easter Bunny who lives in April Valley where all the other Easter bunnies live and work, making Easter candy, sewing bonnets, and decorating and delivering Easter eggs. Colonel Wellington B. Bunny is retiring as Chief Easter Bunny, and Peter and an evil bunny named January Q. Irontail are both vying for the job. But Irontail, voiced by Vincent Price!, of course wants to ruin Easter!

An Oscarwinning smash musical from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Easter Parade stars Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in this perfect film of nostalgia and escapism. When a Broadway star and a chorus girl fall in love, it culminates with a proposal that happens during the Easter Parade. or the multitude of travelers crossing the Interstate Bridge between Oregon and Washington, Jantzen Beach is simply a vast spread of shopping centers, restaurants, and hotels clustered on Hayden Island as you zoom past. Many will have a vague notion of the area being associated with the Jantzen brand of swimwear, but with each passing year the memories of the iconic Jantzen Beach Amusement Park dwindle into obscurity. Back in the day, hailed as the “Coney Island of the West,” Hayden Island was once home to the largest amusement park in the nation—a massive park encompassing 123 acres that was patronized by over 30 million people during its 42 years of operation.

It all began in 1927 when William A. Logus and Leo F. Smith purchased forty acres on Hayden Island from the Portland Electric Power Company.

Shortly thereafter, Logus and Smith launched the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, named after Carl Jantzen of swimwear fame; along with a number of Jantzen executives and several prominent members of the community, Carl To Advertise With Us, Us, CallCall 503.825.2111 18 To Advertise With 503.825.2111

Jantzen underwrote the entire $500,000 project.

Jantzen and his fellow investors envisioned the park as a showcase to promote swimming as a public activity, which later included the company’s sponsorship of national “Learn to Swim” weeks throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. With swimming as a primary focus of the park, four gigantic swimming pools were constructed as well as a natatorium (an indoor swimming facility).

The Jantzen Beach Amusement Park officially opened on May 26, 1928. In addition to the swimming pools, the park also featured a number of popular rides including the Big Dipper Roller Coaster and a custom-made carousel.

Constructed by C.W. Parker, the “American Amusement King,” the carousel was hand-crafted in 1921 and first operated at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. After surviving a fire, the carousel was later shipped to Portland where it became a highlight attraction at Jantzen Beach. Of the various rides created by Parker, only the carousel survives

today. It resides in the custodianship of Restore Oregon, an organization with plans to reassemble and install the carousel in a permanent new home that will “serve as a new attraction for our region.” On a spooky note, the carousel was for years the source of ghost stories. A number of youngsters, as well as maintenance workers, claimed to have witnessed ghostly children on or about the ride.

The Big Dipper Roller Coaster, designed by Carl Phare, took center stage as the featured attraction of the park.

The “Dipper,” a gigantic amusement construction, boasted to be the largest roller coaster west of Chicago, traveling 3800 feet per minute with 14 dips, 5 of them in excess of 35 feet, and the steepest dip which plunged riders 70 feet straight down. For the more faint of heart, the park offered a Kiddy Dipper roller coaster, and included arcade games and picnic grounds.

One of the biggest draws of the park was the Golden Canopy Ballroom, which became Portland’s premier dancehall during the 1930s and ‘40s.

In 1942, Clara Shepard of the Spectator newspaper wrote: “If a young man about town says dancin’ to a girl, he might as well say Jantzen Beach at the same time…for they are synonymous as far as she is concerned. The Golden Canopy Ballroom features the sweetest swing in the country every night of the park’s season, with a parade of big name dance bands moving across its board…” Shepard’s description was no exaggeration. World famous musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong performed at Jantzen Beach to the delight of thousands who flocked to the park for unforgettable nights of top shelf entertainment.

By the late 1940s, however, Jantzen Beach was in decline.

Vanport, a town created during World War II to house workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver (hence the name Vanport), was located at today’s Delta Park area and provided one of Jantzen Beach’s primary revenue sources. As the second largest city in Oregon at the time (by population), the residents of Vanport frequented Jantzen Beach for its wide variety of entertainment right in their own “backyard.” After the Vanport Flood of 1948, which effectively destroyed the majority of the town, and the

decline in population after the war, this important revenue stream dried up for the once thriving park.

Changes in the society at large also contributed to the decline of Jantzen Beach. While television rose to prominence as America’s go-to entertainment, people frequently opted to stay home rather than venture out during their leisure time.

When they did venture out, the boundless freedom of the automobile—now a staple of American society—offered endless opportunities for recreational activities. The allure of the traditional amusement park had lost its luster.

In 1960, a fire broke out in the Tunnel of Love, resulting in its destruction as well as that of the Fun House and the Dutch Mill. In the face of incidents and declining attendance, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park closed its doors after Labor Day weekend in 1970. Following the closure of the amusement park, Jantzen Beach Center, a large shopping complex, eventually arose, and for some years housed the historic C.W. Parker carousel, which may operate again one day should Restore Oregon succeed in constructing a new home for it. The pumping system for the swimming pools of the old amusement park are still in use today, providing drinking water for residents of the Hayden Island area. And wooden remnants of the Big Dipper Roller Coaster live on at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on S.E. 28th St. in Portland, where they have been repurposed as tables, as well as the bar itself.

So the next time you’re caught in traffic on I-5 near Jantzen Beach, allow yourself to daydream a little about the “Coney Island of the West,” that famous amusement park on the Columbia from days gone by that brought joy to millions, and memories to last a lifetime, for those fortunate enough to share in the experience.

A Voice Like No Other Dr. Sarah Maines

Y

ou probably haven’t thought of musicians this way, but singers are athletes, and like other athletes pushing their bodies to the limit, they can get injured - and that’s where Dr. Sarah Maines can help.

Sarah is a Portland area musician and teacher who, in addition to basic voice training, offers artistic and habilitative voice instruction. “We keep singers in top vocal shape for their chosen genre and help rebalance and strengthen the voice after an injury or strain,” she said. “I’ve had multiple students who came to me with issues severe enough to require surgery on their vocal folds who now maintain successful singing careers.”

Sarah grew up on a cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon, where she spent a lot of time on horseback or helping out in her mother’s huge garden. Music was “ever-present” in the family. National Public Radio’s Performance Today was always playing, and her mom played the flute.

“My first understanding of harmony came from singing hymns in the front pew, hearing my brother and dad sing bass, my mom and sisters sing alto and sometimes tenor while I sang soprano,” said Sarah.

The family would sing on road trips, and after long days of working on the ranch, her “Dad would sing to keep our spirits up.”

Sarah joined the Treasure Valley Children’s Chorus in Ontario when she was ten and also played trumpet in jazz and pep bands in middle and high school. She studied music at Berea College in Kentucky where she fell in love with pedagogy (teaching) as a senior.

Then, another epiphany.

“Just after graduating, I experienced some vocal health issues due to

laryngopharyngeal reflux,” she said. Working with a professional voice specialist in Ohio, Sarah became “completely smitten with the world of voice care.”

“It was immediately obvious to me that this is my purpose,” she said.

“I’ve been teaching ever since.”

She earned her doctorate at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, and even before she moved to Portland about 15 years ago, Sarah had already instructed hundreds of students.

Along with teaching in her private studio, Sarah currently accepts referrals from the OHSU Voice Clinic, works with laryngologist Dr. James Thomas of voicedoctor.net in Portland, and teaches at the University of Portland.

Her students regularly win awards, scholarships, and are cast in leading roles in musicals and perform professionally around the world.

If the fit seems right, an initial lesson is scheduled so Sarah can assess the student’s voice and they can talk more about goals.

When not teaching voice instruction, she’s also an active union member of the Portland Opera Chorus and performs regularly with the Resonance Ensemble, Fear No Music, and is active in the Portland area musical theater scene.

Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners.

“The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’”

Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks.

Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls.

Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s.

Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes

its own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross.

“We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom quality flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a championship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.”

Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh.

Lemon Blueberry Cake This moist blueberry lemon cake contains three lemon cake layers with blueberries and is frosted with a refreshing whipping cream and cream cheese frosting, which again has blueberries and lemons.

INGREDIENTS

CAKE 1 (16.25 ounce) package white cake mix 1 ¼ cups water 3 egg whites 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons lemon extract DIRECTIONS

FROSTING 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened ¾ cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract FILLING 1/3 cup blueberry pie filling

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 8-inch pans.

2. Beat cake mix, water, egg whites, vegetable oil, and lemon extract together in a bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until batter is well combined, about 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans.

3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Beat cream in a chilled bowl using an electric mixer until soft peaks are almost forming into stiff peaks; place bowl in refrigerator.

5. Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture.

6. Place 1 cake on a plate; top with blueberry pie filling. Place second cake atop blueberry filling. Generously frost cake with whipped cream cheese frosting.
