Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. For almost 25 years, Molalla’s El Charrito has been a favorite stop for delicious Mexican food, craft margaritas, and cold beer in an authentic, family-friendly environment. The restaurant itself is a family affair, owned by two brothers and a brother-in-law, with many family members and longtime friends serving as employees. And the family feelings don’t stop there. “I really like being able to create connections and relationships with the customers,” Sergio Rodriguez, one of the owners, says. “A lot of them feel like my family as well. I’ve known many of them for years, and they keep coming back again and again. I really like that.”
On the food side, the grill’s carne asada is a local favorite, as is their bacon-wrapped shrimp and the supersized Molalla burrito, which offers generous helpings of shrimp, beans, rice, lettuce, tomato and cheese, topped with guacamole, sour cream and red sauce. “The Molalla burrito is very popular,” Sergio says with a laugh. “Anything with shrimp and meat is popular around here.”
El Charrito opened in October 1997 and has always enjoyed strong community support, Sergio says. “The community and everyone has always been so nice and welcoming,” he says. “They’re easy to serve. I especially want to thank the community for all their support during the pandemic. I love how the whole community always comes together in times of need.” El Charrito is particularly known for its Cadillac margaritas and other f lavored frozen concoctions, including the aptly named “Coronarita,” a classic marg greatly improved by the addition of an upturned bottle of Corona beer that drains into the glass as its contents are consumed. 4

Another mainstay is the El Charrito steak, a thick, chargrilled T-bone served with rice, beans, guac, pico de gallo and tortillas. Its expansive menu includes many seafood dishes and vegetarian options. Everything at El Charrito is made from scratch and cooked to order, including the chips. “Our goal is to provide customers with fresh, f lavorful food and great service,” Sergio says. “We just want to make them feel at home.” Food and drinks are available for dine-in or takeout, and El Charrito is a great place for birthday celebrations, where the lucky celebrant gets to wear a sombrero and be serenaded by the staff, as well as getting a tasty dessert. A Different Kind of Art Gallery
“What is Art-O-Maddic?”
S
ince we opened in June of 2021 we have received variations of this question. Art-O-Maddic is primarily an Art Gallery with a very eclectic collection of creations in all materials and styles, mostly made by local artists, but we brought in some nationaltouring artists for added variety. Many know us as a Creative Space hosting beginner-level classes for all ages in various mediums. Others know us as a unique space to rent for private events and gatherings. We are different things to different people.
The Art-O-Maddic name is a play on the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, one of our favorite stories. We chose this because we are creating a fun, whimsical vibe that is approachable for everyone. We live in Canby
and enjoy shopping local, so we created a unique experience we didn’t see anywhere else in our region, and it’s always evolving and changing. Whether you have $5 or $5,000, we try to have something for everyone. And if we don’t, we can arrange a commission for you. We are sometimes easy to miss off the corner of Grant and 2nd Avenue in downtown Canby, across from Backstop Bar and Grill. We like being Canby’s little secret. However, word is getting out and people are visiting us from farther and farther away. I guess you could say they are becoming curiouser and curiouser.
