Taste Of The Town Sandwich Express

P

By David Bates Photos By Teresa Tingley

rior to being a restaurateur, Matt Primbs was a high school teacher. Then in 1995, he opted for a career change. He bought a restaurant in McMinnville, launching his new life as owner and operator of Sandwich Express. It was a good decision, as the place is so popular that you can pretty much count on long lines at the drive-thru during the lunch hour.

all baked in-house. There are plentiful choices from both a cold deli lineup and a hot sandwich menu.

Chances are good that all those people ahead of you in line are returning customers who know a good lunch when they taste it. Matt enjoyed such great success with his McMinnville location that he decided to replicate it, and twenty years ago he opened a second location in Newberg. Both of those locations have done so well that in 2008 he was able to expand to Salem as well.

Most people will agree that the key to a great sandwich is the bread, and at Sandwich Express that is a point of pride. “We make all of our bread from scratch every night,” Matt says. “No mixes or artificial dough conditioners. We started off with just white and wheat but have added sourdough, dark rye, and cheddar jalapeno through the years.” The cheddar jalapeno is their most recent addition, but it’s gaining popularity quickly.

If you’ve never eaten at Sandwich Express, you need to get in there asap - your tastebuds will thank you! Plan on spending some time with the menu, as there are a lot of options. With the addition of breakfast to the menu a few years ago, Sandwich Express now offers nearly thirty different sandwiches on a variety of breads that are

The sandwiches aren’t the only things worthy of acclaim here, though. One of customers’ favorite discoveries at Sandwich Express is that the fries rank among the best in the area, and you get the choice between beer-battered or garlic fries. “Our new garlic fry is a steak-cut fry which has become very popular,” Matt says. “You can’t get steak-cut

“It’s a lot of work to make the bread, but it is well worth it.” says Matt. Sandwich Express also recently started offering gluten-free bread, which is the only kind not made on site.

interior dining available that features a popular attraction for kids. Circling the perimeter of the restaurant just below the ceiling, and occasionally vanishing into tunnels, is an electric model train. It makes for a nice distraction while waiting for your order, and young and old alike enjoy watching it. According to Matt, when running all day it travels over ten miles! Matt and his team have earned a reputation over the years for being team players and good citizens when others are in need. They’re often participating in fundraisers for youth clubs, graduation night and other non-profits, and when people fall into harm’s way, Matt looks for a way to help, both locally and beyond.

fries at other drive-thrus in town because they take longer to fry. The quality is worth the extra minute-and-half wait.” You’re not going to want to forget the other sides, either; salads are a huge part of the Sandwich Express experience. “I truly believe there are none other in town that are better for all that you get on them at an affordable price,” Matt says proudly. We offer ten different salads and we don’t skimp on portion size.” Their chili and rotating selection of daily soups are also a draw when the weather turns cold. You know a place is good when you see a long line, but as popular as the drive-thru can be at the McMinnville store, it’s worth venturing inside to enjoy your meal. Both locations have

“We have done several very large fundraisers for big disasters like Hurricane Katrina and Haiti, and local volunteer firefighters,” he says. “These bring in thousands of dollars for people in need.” Most recently, another big fundraiser was held to raise money for people who lost houses and were displaced due to the Oregon wildfires. Matt can usually be found running the McMinnville location, and his wife Amber manages the one in Newberg. For them, this business is a passion project and they absolutely love their work serving the local communities in Yamhill County. “Even after 25 years, I still look forward to going to work,” Matt says. “I love my crew, and they are like my second family.” Sandwich Express is located in McMinnville at 711 NE Highway 99W; Phone: 503-472-3500. In Newberg, find them at 901 Brutscher Street near Fred Meyer; Phone: 503-554-8636. A STRONG NETWORK OF SUPPORT by David Bates

C

aitlin Sticka was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 when she was only 30 years old. She says she was blessed with having a wonderful support system of family and friends. “When I was recovering from one of my surgeries,” Caitlin recalls, “I was laying in bed and the thought came to me that I wanted to give back and to provide support for other women in my community who were going through something similar.”

That is how With Courage was born. Initially, the program was launched in 2016 under the umbrella of Hope on the Hill, working out of the Church on the Hill in McMinnville. “They were wonderful and allowed With Courage to grow, and eventually we decided to step out on our own,” she says. The group became a 501c3 this year. As a two-time survivor herself, Caitlin knows that being in the company of others who have been through the experience is so important. The primary goal of With Courage is to provide a strong network of support to women and families affected by breast cancer. If you’re local to Yamhill County and are newly diagnosed, currently undergoing treatment, or you’ve come through as a survivor, her group is here to support you. 10 •MCMINNVILLE COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

There are multiple ways that With Courage lends its support, such as providing care packages with useful and comforting items for patients in active treatment. They also have a private Facebook support group, which is monitored by Caitlin and others from the organization. “This support is for our clients who are in any stage of their diagnosis or survivorship,” she says. “We know that the ‘after’ of cancer can be harder than the actual treatment.” Normally they hold monthly in-person support meetings, but those remain on hold due to the pandemic, and will resume when it is safe to do so. Additionally, they strive to provide financial assistance opportunities for women in active treatment, paid directly to providers and companies for medical services. Since their founding, they have delivered 50 care packages to patients in active treatment and given more than $30,000 in financial help and support to more than 150 families. The team at With Courage pride themselves on holding unique and interesting fundraisers, and there was never a better time for creative fundraising than in 2020. “We had to postpone a few of our favorite events due to Covid, but we’re looking forward to hosting our 6th Annual Pink Ribbon Event on Oct. 17. It will be much different this year but we are working hard to come up with something unique and fun!” Those who are hesitant to reach out are encouraged to take a look at the With Courage Facebook page and read testimonials from some of the women who have been helped. “We know everyone has different comfort levels, and we hope that people feel safe and welcome in our group,” Caitlin says. With Courage is located in the Cozine House in downtown McMinnville, at 105 NE Third Street, Ste B. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 2pm. Visit their website at www.withcourage.org, or call 503-0218-3703 for more information.

hen you visit Encore Home Furnishings in McMinnville, you’re looking at 15 years worth of success stories, dedicated customer service, and unparalleled experience in the furniture business. It started out as a “fun project” for Nikki Elliott, who teamed up with her mother-in-law one summer to fix up and resell furniture out of her garage. The idea took off, and soon she opened a small store in Bunn Village selling brand new furniture & mattresses, factory seconds & consignments priced at 40-80% off retail. She developed a successful model to bridge the gap between inexpensive thrift store furniture and costly furniture store chains. A decade and a half later, after a lot of fine-tuning, late nights & hard work, Encore Home Furnishings employs more than two dozen people, and owns a 6-acre parcel of land with 25,000 square feet of name-brand furniture, mattresses & home decor. They no longer sell consignments, but focus on selling highquality brand new items & factory seconds at discount prices. Encore partners with Homelegance, Serta, Ashley, Modus, Mohawk, Natuzzi and over 40 other brands

Thousands of customers over the years have come to appreciate Encore’s mission to make furniture buying, whether it’s for a first apartment or a dream home, an affordable and stress-free experience. The staff, including long-time managers Casey Ranger & Michael Stanley, are focused on providing customers with the highest quality of service & making customers feel like part of the Encore family. The store offers easy financing options with zero interest, as well as a 30-day layaway program. Nikki is grateful to the community that has helped to make her store such a resounding success, and she gives back generously. “We have been truly blessed & feel it is important to share that with others. We have donated furniture to nearly every school in the county,” she says. “We’ve also worked closely with Habitat for Humanity, Juliette’s House, Destiny Rescue & the See Ya Later Foundation, as well as various churches, non-profits & other organizations helping those dealing with abusive situations and illnesses. Over the years we have also sponsored county-wide youth sports teams.” Encore Home Furnishings is located at 2730 Bunn Road, just off Hwy 99W in McMinnville. Hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 1-5 pm. For more information, please call 503-474-1937 or 866-665-1937, or visit them online at www.EncoreHomeFurnishings.com 

Understanding The “True Value of Dentistry” “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and that is true with preventative dentistry. It’s easier and cheaper to stop dental problems from happening than it is to fix the damage. Preservation instead of repair or replacement keeps your money in your pocket. Getting a cavity is an unpleasant experience as well as a painful reminder that teeth, unlike bones, can’t heal themselves once damaged. Cavities are the result of a tug-of-war happening every day in your mouth. Our teeth, gums and jawbone are under constant attack from bacteria, acidic foods and drinks, trauma and normal wear and tear.

Does NOT include Periodontal Treatment Some restrictions apply. Not valid with any other offers. No cash value. Must present ad. Expires 12/15/20

At some point (myself included) we are guilty of taking our teeth for granted. After all, they have always been so reliable, so solid and it’s hard to imagine they will change any time soon, right? Teeth are no exception to the inevitability of change. Usually changes are so gradual they are hard to detect until something catches our attention like a toothache or even worse, a broken tooth. Dental disease in early stages is painless and relatively slow in progressing, but without intervention it will continue and become costly on a variety of levels. By the time pain, bleeding or breaking teeth occur, there is usually significant and possibly irreversible damage to teeth, gum tissue or bone.

821 NE Highway 99W • McMinnville (503) 472-1159 www.jamesnelsondentistry.com

Regular dental visits provide an opportunity to identify potential issues or problems when damage is minimal and solutions are less extensive and less expensive. Our team would be honored to be of assistance with your dental care.

History of the McMinnville Public Library written by David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

he Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie is credited for building many of the city libraries across the United States, including the one in McMinnville. However, the story of the McMinnville Public Library actually begins a little earlier. At the dawn of the 20th century, more than two decades before McMinnville had a Carnegie Library, the local Grange and various women’s groups led the way in bringing culture to the fledgling city. McMinnville at the time was among those small American towns that had a “rest room” for travelers to catch a breather, and those rooms usually offered a small book collection. The earliest such record here goes back to 1909, when McMinnville’s rest room had 268 books. It was located in the Wright Building on the corner of Third Street and Davis. McMinnville’s official library was born in 1911, when Ordinance No. 736 created a city library board. Martha Lincoln Bardon was hired as the first librarian and was paid $35 per month to oversee a collection of 757 books and many more periodicals. Circulation was about 500 patrons.

20 • MCMINNVILLE COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

Early in December of that year, the city pledged $1,000 a month and voters approved a levy later that same month. But the big money came in January 1912, when Carnegie pledged $10,000 for a library. The modern equivalent of that amount would be more than $261,000. The building went up quickly; it opened in 1912 with 1,419 volumes. A few years later, the local Shakespeare Club donated two pictures to the library, launching a tradition that today has the library filled with and surrounded by art, including murals, paintings and sculptures. The library proved popular and grew quickly. By 1931, it housed nearly 9,000 volumes with library cards issued to more than 2,000 residents. Things slowed the following year with the Great Depression; by mid-year, new book purchases were in the single digits. A couple of years later, the library hosted a problem-solving workshop in which libraries from as far as Tillamook and Hillsboro participated, marking the beginnings of regional library cooperation that still exists today. Postwar growth led to inevitable growing pains at the library. The pressure

was eased somewhat by the removal of a beloved fireplace to make room for more shelves. In 1956, a children’s room opened, drawing attention from local newspapers, including the Oregonian. In 1960, the library hired a woman whose name is synonymous with the library itself; Rose Marie Caughran came in as the children’s librarian, and she would remain on the job for 33 years, eventually becoming the head librarian. Early in her tenure, she helped create Friends of the McMinnville Library, a support group to help with the busy workload. Members volunteered inside, and (like they are now doing again because of COVID-19) delivered books to residents around the city. In the 1970s, growing pains again demanded attention. In 1972, the Oregon State Library in Salem provided funds for the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments to study the library needs in the tri-county area of Polk, Marion and Yamhill counties. They found that of nearly half a million residents in the area, 100,000 had no local library service because they were not living in a city. Initially funded by tax levies and now part of the tax base, the Chemeketa Community Regional Library Service was created in 1974, at which point the McMinnville library had more than 25,000 books. A tax base approved in 1985 allowed CCRLS to automate and link every library’s catalog, previously stored on paper index cards in massive drawers. This enabled the users of any member library to search (and, more importantly, to borrow from) the holdings of all the libraries collectively. Today, there are 17 libraries in the system, including the library for Chemeketa Community College, and the total holdings are more than 1 million. Even as she was a key player in the formation of CCRLS, Caughran had another concern: the building Carnegie had paid for was no longer sufficient to serve McMinnville’s population. Led by Caughran and then-mayor Scott Hill, the city asked voters in 1980 to approve $1.7 million in bonds and also an operating levy. Voters approved both. The 11,500 square-foot addition was designed by architect Mike Keller and opened in 1982, followed by a dedication in 1983 that was attended by Willard Scott, the iconic jovial weatherman from NBC’s The Today Show. His appearance launched a new tradition for the library: the appearance of significant culture

figures (mostly writers) each year as a fund-raising tool. Between 1983 and 1997, guests included beloved Pacific Northwest luminaries such as poet Kim Stafford, photographer Ray Atkeson, former Oregon Symphony conductor James DePriest, local children’s book author Beverly Cleary, and novelist Jean Auel. The library celebrated its 100th birthday in 2012. Jenny Berg, an employee who worked her way up through the ranks and in the 1990s played an important role in building the library’s remarkable collection of graphic novels and comics, became the head librarian in January 2013. Among her first major projects was an attractive enhancement of the plaza on the south side. Roughly 180 new bricks were installed, each individuallysponsored and designed/inscribed to resemble a beloved book cover or spine. The project was completed in 2016. Today, the library is a major cultural force in McMinnville. Nearly 30,000 residents have their own library card, which they may use to check out any of the library’s 95,687 books and nearly 129,000 digital items, including books and films. The library fills 22,000 square-feet and is run by more than twenty employees, both full and part-time. Current circulation is more than 286,500 items, which is down from last year’s 315,700, likely due to a 3 month closure earlier this year. The library is operating part-time now, but Jenny and her staff have worked hard to make the library an accessible, clean and safe place, while staff and volunteers have helped with home deliveries during the pandemic. When operating at full capacity, the library is a hub for a host of services and activities, particularly for youth. As always, the Friends of the McMinnville Public Library and the Library Foundation of McMinnville offer their support to ensure that the library fulfills its mission well into the 21st century. The McMinnville Public Library is located at 225 NW Adams Street. They can be contacted by phone at 503-435-5562, email at libref@mcminnvilleoregon.gov, or found online at www. maclibrary.org. Owen and Friends of McMinnville Public Library; additional information provided by Librarian Jenny Berg and Circulation Supervisor Adam Carlson.

WINE TIME

ALL ABOUT PINOT NOIR with Woodard Wines by Jeff Woodard

O

regon’s Willamette Valley has become one of the world’s leading producers of pinot noir in a relatively short period of time. In a matter of 55 years this area is now held in the same regard as what is considered the greatest pinot noir region, Burgundy, France.

In 1965, Charles Coury imported and planted the first pinot noir vines at what is now David Hill Vineyards in Forest Grove. Just a handful of winemakers were brave enough to do what the rest of the world thought impossible. These early pioneers found the perfect location to grow what is often referred to as the greatest wine varietal of the world. Oregon, as it turns out is perfectly suited to grow a number of highly prized varietals including pinot noir, gamay, chardonnay and riesling. The Willamette Valley straddles the 45th parallel which happens to also run through the heart of Burgundy. This is very important as pinot noir needs a long growing season with ample light, warm days and cool nights. The Willamette Valley receives approximately an hour more of daylight than the Napa Valley during Summer Solstice and the cool marine influence of the Pacific Ocean keeps temperatures down at night. This 30 degree temperature swing gives the delicate skins of the

pinot noir grapes a much needed break from the warm summer days. Each vintage in Oregon is also incredibly unique. Pinot noir showcases vintage variation possibly more so than any other varietal. Winemakers love the challenge each year brings, as well as oenophiles. Truly, no two wines are the same. The Willamette Valley hosts thousands of visitors every year who specifically come for these prized wines. With over 600 wineries to choose from, Oregonians are minutes away from some of the world’s greatest wineries. I have always urged my customers to constantly try new wines as this is the best way to learn. With every winery you visit you will gain a greater appreciation for the vision of Oregon’s early winery pioneers.

Want to learn more about wine? Woodard Wines offers local and international collections as well as those hard to find selections. Get out of your wine rut and try something new. Jeff Woodard is the proprietor of Woodard Wines located in McMinnville. For more information on wine, you can reach him at 971-237-2502 or Jeff@woodardwines.com.
