ake ‘N’ Bake pizza is the best of both worlds, isn’t it? All of the benefits—fresh dough made from scratch every day, freshly cut vegetables, 100% real mozzarella cheese shredded from blocks (not poured from a bag), piping hot in the comfort of your own home—and none of the detriments. Of course, by promoting and fostering such a positive work environment, they

have also been able to hold onto a large core group of employees who have been with them for many years. They treat their employees like family, and in fact, Chris was thrilled to congratulate Lucia Arthur (who has been with them for nine years) for having just been promoted to manager of the McMinnville store!

ARTS ALLIANCE OF YAMHILL COUNTY

Art In The Community

W

ith life returning to some semblance of normal, many cultural events in Yamhill County that the pandemic shut down or forced online in the last couple years are returning, and that means the Arts Alliance of Yamhill County has its hands full.

The Arts Alliance of Yamhill County is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in McMinnville. And McMinnville musician, Valerie Blaha, serves as president of the 9-member non-profit board, which in 2023 will celebrate its 35th birthday. She’s been busy recently organizing AAYC’s records and history, plus rolling out a new website.

She’s excited that the work is about to get more visibility. “Things are coming back!” she says. “We’re really looking for good participation at Art Harvest and also want to spread the word about Paper Gardens and the Terroir Creative Writing Festival.”

The Art Harvest Studio Tour is the AAYC’s single largest event, with its own paid staffer. Come fall, dozens of artists from around McMinnville, Newberg, and the rest of Yamhill County open their studios to the public, offering a glimpse of where and how they do their work.

The self-guided tour typically runs over two weekends in late September and early October.

AAYC also organizes the nearly 30-year-old Paper

Gardens writing contest, in which people of all ages contribute prose and poetry for publication in a literary journal published annually in the spring. All entries are judged by Pacific Northwest literary luminaries. All of this year’s copies have sold out, although you can find one at the McMinnville Public Library.

Rounding the bend into 2023, Blaha said she also expects the Terroir Creative Writing Festival to return next spring after a 3-year hiatus forced by the pandemic. The event draws writers and poets from around the state to McMinnville.

Beyond public events, the AAYC also works to support young artists and arts education. Two $1,000 scholarships are funded annually for local high school students who intend to study art in college, and grants are also available for arts teachers in Yamhill County.

It’s all very loosely organized, with each event and program having its own organizers and volunteers, but AAYC is always in the background, offering support and free publicity in the Arts Alive program on McMinnville Community Media, Channel 11.

“It’s been sort of an organic thing where people come together and say, ‘Hey, let’s do a writing contest,’” Blaha says. “So they can use our nonprofit status to do the project. These are all done by volunteers.”

A fun upcoming event for all ages, Art in the Park: Kites, is happening on Thursday, August 18, at 6 PM, in West Hills Neighborhood Park in McMinnville.

Accu-Tech Automotive: The Experts!

The friendly, knowledgeable staff, with years of combined automotive experience, is a team you can trust.

Shilo Couch, owner of Accu-Tech Automotive, grew up riding dirt bikes. He was constantly fixing and rebuilding them himself, since a new bike was not likely to come his way. At that time, during the 1980s, his dad owned and operated a service station in Carlton (now Carlton Corners), and Shilo recalls being intrigued by what was going on inside the repair shop. He enjoyed rolling under cars on the creepers and going for rides on the old in-ground lift. “I remember the mechanic there had an old Ford T-Bucket with a rumble seat, and occasionally took me for rides in it,” Shilo related.

“Another customer would come in with his soupedup, straight axle ’55 Chevy and would let me sit in the captain’s chair he’d put in.” Not even 10 years old yet, Shilo had wanted to build his own hot rod.

ACCU-TECH AUTOMOTIVE His high school ambition, however, was to join the Air Force and become a jet plane mechanic. That plan changed when a rep from Universal Technical Institute visited Shilo’s metal shop class at Yamhill Carlton High School promoting their automotive program.

He attended UTI in Arizona, receiving an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology in 1994.

Friends and family often asked him, “Why don’t you just open your own shop?” After working in the field for 11 years at two private shops and the USPS Vehicle Maintenance Facility, he opened Accu-Tech Automotive in June 2005.

Accu-Tech Automotive continually invests in state-of-theart tools and equipment, including factory scan tools that allow them to download and update factory programming calibrations in Chevrolet and Ford vehicles. Additionally, Accu-Tech works closely with other auto repair shops in the area, sometimes “bouncing ideas off one another for that problem car that just isn’t making any sense.” The shops loan and borrow specialty tools and equipment between them, as well as refer customers to neighboring shops that might specialize in a particular service or repair. “We just want the customer happy and to get them back on the road, and will do almost anything to make that happen,” Shilo says.

Shilo’s lived in Yamhill County since 1983, his wife Angie, who was born in McMinnville, has lived there all her life. An ASEcertified Master Tech for over 20 years, Shilo has watched his business develop and grow within the community. A Member of McMinnville Chamber of Commerce, Shilo also supports and donates to local schools and organizations. In partnership with Yamhill Christian Church, Accu-Tech sponsors an annual Car Care Clinic for single and widowed mothers, offering a free oil change, wash and vacuum, new wiper blades, and light bulbs.

Visits from friends and family are welcome and highly encouraged. At the Independent level, guests often join residents for their social high-point of the day—the meal. Two separate dining rooms, each with its own chef, offer completely different menus. Tawnya Turner, the marketing and sales director for Dallas Retirement Village, has been with the community for almost 9 years now, and is constantly amazed by how quickly those years have passed. “When they

say ‘pick a job you love and it will never feel like work’… well that applies to me.” Her greatest reward working at Dallas Retirement Village is all the wonderful people she meets, whether they become residents or not, and the beautiful love stories and interesting life adventures they share with her.

“I believe you treat everybody the same way, and you treat them in a compassionate and caring manner,” David explains, adding, “I love what I do. Feel we can make a difference. And I’m happy to be a small piece of that for our staff and our residents.” Strongly rooted in the community, Dallas Retirement Village maintains relationships with the local schools and college, inviting students to interact, perform, and educate the residents. Seniors “who never stop learning” are able to remain more independent, and increased physical and mental interactions tend to “keep us younger.”
