risp air and turning leaves always means family fun at French Prairie Gardens during the fall season. There are plenty of activities for all ages, and the activity they’re most famous for is the Pigtucky Derby Pig Races. The Pigtucky Derby Race is really something special. The pigs are lined up, not unlike
horses at the Kentucky Derby, except dressed in mud and bandanas around their necks. Once they’re off, the auburn pigs race through a winding grassy muddy track to their hearts’ content, and right beside the track is seating for the whole family. Once you’ve seen the pigs come a’running, the classic Pumpkin Patch is open and running from October 2 through 31 for the perfect jack-o-lantern or seasonal decor with 20 varieties of pumpkins. There’s also the incredibly impressive mazes, of which there are four! The Corn Maze, Sunflower Maze, Rope Maze, and Kid’s Hay Maze. The slides are great for all ages too, including the Tube Slide and brand new Super Mega Ride ‘n’ Slide. The kids can enjoy countless

activities like the Pig Barrel Train Ride, Pedal Karts, Tire Swings, Jump Pad, Hamster Rollers, Obstacle Course, and Farm Ninja Course. Oregon’s historic heat wave in June serves as a reminder that when taking fire mitigation actions at home, watch the weather. Don’t use power tools, such as chainsaws and mowers, when the weather is hot and dry or when restrictions are in effect. What it requires, according to State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple, is thinking about wildfire in terms of years, not seasons. Fire season is now a year-round affair. “Wildfire safety starts with you and your property,” says Ruiz Temple. “Residents can help our fire service partners by taking action to prepare their homes, families, and communities for wildfires by starting on their property.” Fire officials say you should think about the space around your home as a target or donut, with your home in the center.
• Five to 30 feet out, keep lawns and vegetation well-irrigated and trees limbed. Research plants for this zone, as some are more fireresistant than others. • Balconies, decks, porches, or patios should be kept clean and free of compostable material. Combustible furniture and cushions, BBQ grills, propane tanks should be removed during high fire danger when not in use. • Treat fencing as a structure, with no hanging branches over the fence. Make sure there are no combustibles under or up against the fence. • Keep hanging baskets and potted plants well watered; if embers hit dried vegetation, it will catch fire more easily. • If you rent, check with your landlord about things they can or should do. • Clear your gutters of any debris, like pine needles and dry leaves. Also make sure your roof is clear, especially if it’s flat. • Sign up for alerts with the county to ensure you’ll be notified in the event of an evacuation. Also, have an evacuation plan arranged with family and/or neighbors. • Have a go-bag ready. You can find more tips on this with the American Red Cross.
