or all you wine drinkers out there—whether you’re a connoisseur boasting a refined palette, a casual drinker interested in the science of oenology, or just a social drinker looking for a cozy unpretentious environment to meet friends— there’s a fresh new face on the Lake Owego landscape. Having opened in September of this year, Beso Bar & Bottle is a little taste of Spain right here in Oregon! Managing partner Vanessa Harris is an encyclopedia of knowledge, and a contagiously enthusiastic champion of wine, especially when it comes to lesser known, up-andcoming producers. Her passion is evident and manifest in every aspect of the business. You can’t meet her without being drawn into her wonderful and fascinating world, and yet she still manages to speak to your level of interest. She can inform the casual consumer just as easily and readily as she can “talk shop” with the epicure. After growing up in Lake Oswego and earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Magazine Journalism from the University of Oregon, Vanessa went abroad to teach English in Spain. It was that experience which changed her life and inspired her

new vocation. The culture, the history, the people, it was all more than she could’ve hoped for; and what was initially planned as a three-year stay turned into eight. So inspired by everything she was experiencing there, she honored the terms of her teaching contract, but then stayed and earned a Master’s Degree in Winemaking. Returning to Lake Oswego afterward, she kept her eyes open for opportunities while working for friends and family as she managed Baldwin’s on A Street. That opportunity came with the confluence of two events: her becoming acquainted with Janine Tunay, a regular customer at Baldwin’s who was interested in opening a business; and her finding the perfect location at 148 B Ave. Ste. 200, where an old favorite gathering spot, Chuck’s Place, had previously existed. From there it was “simply” a matter of realizing the dream and bringing it to life. Initially, Vanessa had envisioned more of a hybrid bottle shop and wine bar that would serve tapas—which were traditionally smaller appetizers / snacks in Spanish cuisine, although that definition has evolved over the years and now indicates a much broader scope of foods. However, as the business opened and customers were being served, it became immediately evident that the menu would need some expansion. Answering the call with tenacity and resourcefulness, and in just three short months Vanessa transformed Beso into what it is now: a wine-centric, Spanish-influenced, elegant dinein restaurant. She has a small-but-mighty staff, comprised of husband and wife team Salvador and Chely (her chefs, and the backbone of her kitchen), Leslie (hostess), Irene (special events coordinator), and of course, herself. Salvador and Chely worked for Vanessa’s parents as chefs in their

Vanessa Harris, Owner of Beso Bar & Bottle catering company for many years, and brought not only a wealth of experience and knowledge but also a sense of home. And they have all contributed and worked together to formulate the menu and the overall vibe of the restaurant. Vanessa admits she couldn’t have accomplished any of this without her staff. Everything is fresh, locally-sourced, and naturally seasonal. There will always be a core menu, but as the seasons change, so too will their fantastic selection of entrées. Many of the ingredients come either from Our Table Cooperative (out of Sherwood) or Rubinette Produce (out of Portland). Chicken is free-range and organic, and the lamb kofta comes from the Carman Family Ranch in Eastern Oregon. Wines come from all over the world, but Vanessa is a strong proponent of low-intervention products—meaning there is as little manipulation to the natural grape as possible. Some of these come from local wineries (Lingua Franca, Morgen Long, Audeant), some from the Loire Valley in France, and some from the Galician regions of Spain.

Beso Bar & Bottle is the culmination of Vanessa’s experiences living abroad. It’s a physical representation, an outward expression to be shared. The Easiest Way To Acquire A Lot In Lake Oswego - Circa 1935 By Char Green, Oswego Heritage Council

uring the Great Depression, from 1929 to 1939, many banks failed. This triggered a drastic decrease in home loans and ownership. At that time, most home mortgages were short-term (three to five years), with no amortization, and balloon instruments at loan-to-value (LTV) ratios below sixty percent. This prevented many working and middle-class families from being able to afford home ownership. The National Housing Act of 1934 created the Federal Housing Administration. Its intention was to regulate the rate of interest and the terms of mortgages that it insured. These new lending practices increased the number of Americans who could afford the down payment and monthly debt service payments on a mortgage, thereby also increasing the size of the market for singlefamily homes.

to encourage growth of the local housing market. One of the many families who enjoyed a day or two out was Thomas W. James and his wife, Mildred, as well as their children, Marion, Ellen Louise and Thomas. A native of Wales who had made his way to America in 1911, Thomas Sr. was a watchman at Meier & Frank department store and the family lived comfortably in a house they owned in SE Portland. While one cannot be sure if the whole family attended together, we do know that 10-year-old Ellen Louise certainly did since she was the grand winner of a rather nice prize, two lots in Lake Oswego.

So, what became of the little girl with the big prize and that lot in Oswego? Let’s take a look! A visit to the Clackamas County Recorder office revealed that Ellen was given title to not one, but actually two lots in the Lakewood area.

At the time, building lots in this area of Oswego were selling for roughly $300 to $400 for lots not directly on the lake or with lake views. While this seems low to our 2020 eyes, don’t forget that the median annual salary in 1935 was around $500.00. According to real estate records, purchasers Ralph and Frances Gilbert built a home on the site in 1956.

The 1967 purchasers, Richard and Dorothy Norman, were the longest residents, living there until they had both passed away by 2004. In 2012, the house was once again on the market, and following sale, the original house was demolished to make way for the new home that sits there today.

A Little More About Ellen Louise James

ollowing graduation from high school, she went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oregon State University in 1946, a Master’s degree in Paleontology from the University of Oregon in 1950, and began working for the US Geological Survey as a research geologist. Ellen would go on to spend 37 years working for the USGS. She wrote numerous professional papers and was regarded as one of the worldwide authorities in the area of fossil mollusks. Following retirement, she moved back to Oregon with her husband and fellow geologist, George Moore, where they remained active in the field of geology and, among other things, “were known for their generosity and for hosting wonderful parties at their home in Corvallis.” Ellen passed away in 2017, a celebrated and respected scientist.

ith the holiday season rolling around, more and more people are searching for the perfect dress to wear for any and all upcoming occasions. I paid a visit to Lake Oswego’s local bridal boutique Anna’s Bridal, which was established 28 years ago. Anna Totonchy opened her first storefront in 1993 where she sold special occasion dresses and custom gowns, as well as unique bridal fabrics. Shortly after opening, Anna decided to expand her store by also carrying gowns designed by exclusive wedding gown designers. In 2014 the shop moved from Lake Grove to its current beautiful location on the corner of State and A Avenue in downtown Lake Oswego. This bigger and brighter location allows their experienced staff to better service their clients. Anna’s background in custom bridal gowns coupled with the talented on-site alterations team allows them to transform dresses as needed, tailoring each one for a perfect fit. The shop carries dresses to suit any price range, body type and color preference. Anna’s Bridal has continually won awards for being “Portland’s Best Bridal Shop,” as well as having the best bridesmaid, mother-of-the-bride, and flower girl dresses. They also have the perfect accessories for every event, according to Oregon Bride Magazine. Additionally, it is one of the only bridal shops that offers in-house wedding coordination; Anna’s Bridal provides one stop shopping coordinated with the wedding planners from Bridal Bliss. This talented team of wedding planners have been named the best of the best year after year.

Anna loves to repurpose wedding gowns. Over the years, she has transformed many gowns that belonged to mothers, grandmothers, and even greatgrandmothers into custom gowns for their brides. The alterations team has even altered one mother’s dress three different times for three daughters in the family, each time making it slightly different for that particular bride. Another alteration Anna does is transforming old wedding dresses into a christening gown or nursery accessory for an infant.

The shop also works to promote sustainability by offering garment bags made of recycled materials and running their payments through Rock Paper Coin, a locally founded company that allows for a fully digital experience which reduces paper waste. One of their designers, Pronovias, has even started creating eco-friendly gowns that have been added to their inventory to further reduce their carbon footprint. With the world in disarray, Anna’s Bridal is able to meet with brides who have a fast-approaching wedding date and are on a tight timeline. This can be challenging because most bridal gowns will take 6-8 months to come in once it is ordered. However, Anna’s Bridal has a wonderful selection of off-the rack gowns to ensure that every bride is taken care of. Their goal is to continue providing their customers with excellent service, helping them find the perfect gown that they always dreamed of for their special day. he Lake Oswego Fashion Festival Launch Party was held on September 25th at Skyland neighborhood, exhibiting a breathtaking sunset view of Lake Oswego. Over 75 people attended the event, including Lake Oswego City councilor John Wendland and wife Lisa Wendland, Miss Universe Canada 2021 Tamara Jemuovic, Miss Oregon USA 2021 Allison Cook, and CW Channel TV host Nicole Decosta as well as many artists, musicians and fashion models. The event was organized by LOCC 501(c)(3), Harvest Education Group, and Oceana Blue LLC, which promotes sustainable fashion practices. President Shi of the Lake Oswego Fashion Festival (LOFF) announced that LOFF’s first annual event will be held at Millennium Plaza Park in Lake Oswego in late August 2022. LOFF’s mission is to promote sustainable fashion which fosters change in the products and the systems of fashion, pushing it towards greater ecological integrity and environmental justice. Grinch Cookies Despite their name, these cookies are about as festive and holiday-friendly as can be! These soft and chewy cookies are colored Grinch-green and decorated with milk chocolate candy pieces. INGREDIENTS

1 C unsalted butter softened 1 2/3 C sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3-5 drops green food coloring 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cup red and green M&Ms plus additional ½ cup

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine butter and sugar in a large bowl and use an electric mixer to beat until well-combined and light and fluffy (about 1 minute). 2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. 3. Stir in vanilla extract and food coloring, until well-combined. 4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. 5. Set mixer to low speed and gradually stir dry ingredients into butter mixture. Add ingredients and stir until well-incorporated. 6. Fold in M&M candies and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Chill in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. 7. Once dough has finished chilling, preheat oven to 350°F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper 8. Drop cookie dough by heaping 1 ½ Tbsp-sized scoops onto

prepared cookie sheets, for perfectly round cookies, roll dough in your hands into a smooth ball. 9. Bake on 350°F for 11-13 minutes. If desired, gently press additional M&Ms into the tops of each cookie for decoration while they are still warm. 10.
