From Fine Art Show Artists to Gallery Owners
S
tarting out as show artists, Tina Hospers and her husband John Koster began their art journey and business, Cutting Edge Wood Creations, by traveling across the country displaying their 3D shadow boxes at Fine Art Shows. After years of traveling, Tina and John began looking for a way to stay closer to home and their animals. So in the fall of 2021 they decided to open a fine art gallery in Lake Oswego, representing work from many of the unique artists they discovered during their travels cross country. “We hope to bring new ideas and inspiration to Lake Oswego and surrounding areas,” Hospers said. The gallery not only has work from national artists but work from local artists as well, including pieces of their own, making the total artists represented in the gallery well over 40, with more submissions weekly. The gallery is filled with work from juried fine painters, ceramicists, glass artists, jewelers and mixed media artists. “We have something for everyone with all price points because we believe art should be accessible to all,” Hospers said.

Get to Know Your Garden
Is it south-facing or north-facing? Knowing where the sun hits the ground will help you decide what to grow where. It’s also worth knowing what soil type you have. Take a look at what’s growing. Doing a soil test will also help you know your soil, and therefore what plants you can grow.
Plan Your Garden
Plan what to grow where, rather than getting carried away at the garden center and ending up with too many random plants that neither look good together nor suit your growing conditions. Planning also enables you to use color and structure wisely, which will help you create a garden that looks great throughout the year.
Learn How to Plant
Proper planting will ensure good growth and longevity. Make sure you weed and prepare the soil before planting, and add mulch or fertilizer where necessary. If you’re unsure how to plant something, look online for instructions or check the nursery tag.
Feed and Water Regularly
Proper watering is the difference between life and death. As a general rule, water the root ball rather than the leaves, as the roots absorb the water. Soaking the root ball every week is better than watering a little bit every day. Feeding is also important. Generally you should feed every two weeks during spring and summer, and feed more if growing in containers.

Watch Out for Pests
Most garden pests don’t do much harm and can be left alone, as there are plenty of natural predators that will keep them in check. However, sometimes pests can become an infestation and you need to act. Keeping an eye out for pests in excess like aphids, slugs and snails will help keep your plants safe and save you a lot of heartache.
Make Your Own Compost
Composting kitchen and garden waste is good for the environment, wildlife, your wallet, and also your garden. Let the waste break down (usually for months) and then use it when planting or as a mulch around the base of plants in your garden and veg patch. There are also many ways to compost, so look online for ideas that work for you.
Be Kind to Wildlife
You may see wildlife as the enemy to gardening. But wildlife can be useful in the garden, too. Birds eat a variety of garden pests like slugs and snails, aphids and caterpillars. The artist’s work is crucial to this equation, as are those who appreciate and purchase the work, as well as the gallerists and curators who provide and display it for us all to enjoy.

With that in mind, we are pleased to welcome the Lawrence Gallery to Lake Oswego! While this location just opened in November 2021, the Lawrence family has long represented local artists in their McMinnville area location, and in their galleries formerly located in Portland and at Salishan on the Oregon Coast. Gary and Carole Lawrence started the art gallery in 1977. In 2018, their son Bradley and his wife Heidi purchased the business and accepted the passing of the torch. Relocating to Lake Oswego was first on their list of priorities.

Bradley also purchased the original gallery location outside of McMinnville, which is temporarily closed for redevelopment, but is planned to reopen later this year as an art/ wine/food destination. In the meantime, the Lawrences are focused on ensuring that this beautiful new Lake Oswego locale adds to the selection of artwork and the quality of life in our local community.

I had the pleasure of meeting both Brad and Heidi, and you won’t find two more earnest, genuine, and passionate people. Their sincere desire to help Northwest artists make a living from their art was inspiring. E
very year there are plenty of aesthetic procedures that aren’t so noticeable, the ones that make us green with envy, the ones that make people look radiant and ageless. And according to Shana LaMarsh, those are the procedures that really represent what the industry is all about. Shana is the CEO of Aesthetic Medicine Physicians & Surgeons here in Lake Oswego, and in her view, it’s not about appearing to be 20 when you’re 50, but about looking like the healthiest, most youthful version of yourself at any age. Their goal is to expose, maintain, and enhance the client’s inherent natural beauty. Such transformations, although noticeable, should be subtle.
Even though aging is inevitable because of hormone changes, child birth and menopause, there are ways of slowing the process, and at Aesthetic Medicine they are extremely adept with all of these methods. There are even some ways to “reverse” aging to some extent, but Shana treads carefully with her clients heading down that path. Not an Easter movie, but it’s about a rabbit, so close enough. From elephants to mice, the metropolis of Zootopia is a melting pot where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first bunny on the Zootopia Police, she realizes how hard it is to bring order to a city of such chaos, especially when you feel so small. Determined to prove herself, Judy leaps at the chance to solve a mysterious case. She’s forced to work with a wily and sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her job impossible. But eventually the two discover, as a small bunny who was once bullied, and a fox who was treated as a thief before he even knew the word, they have more in common than they think!

An Oscarwinning smash musical from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Easter Parade stars Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in this perfect film of nostalgia and escapism. When released it grossed six million dollars, and although six million sounds petty these days, the average movie ticket was 37 cents in 1948! When a Broadway star and a chorus girl fall in love, it culminates with a proposal that happens during the Easter Parade. After his first dance partner leaves, Don (Astaire) chooses a young and naive chorus girl, Hannah (Garland) as his protege. But it turns out she’s incredibly klutzy and confuses her left from her right. Funny, cute, and magically musical, Easter Parade holds up at 74 years old!

Probably Gene Wilder’s best movie, and not an Easter movie, but the definitive movie about candy! Willy Wonka, after years of seclusion, hides a handful of golden tickets in random chocolate bars around the world, and if found, children will be given a tour of the famed chocolate factory. Of course, Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe are the only good people in a crowd of selfish brats and classless parents, as the group gets smaller by one after each tour stop and its ensuing lesson and misadventure. Weird, fun, and pure classic cinema.

Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.
Easter Bunny
According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!
Easter Eggs
From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children. 32 • LAKE OSWEGO LIFE/STYLE • APRIL/MAY 2022
Easter Candy
Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter. Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

Lemon Blueberry Cake This moist blueberry lemon cake contains three lemon cake layers with blueberries and is frosted with a refreshing whipping cream and cream cheese frosting, which again has blueberries and lemons. INGREDIENTS
CAKE 1 (16.25 ounce) package white cake mix 1 ¼ cups water 3 egg whites 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons lemon extract
FROSTING 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened ¾ cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract FILLING 1/3 cup blueberry pie filling
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 8-inch pans. 2. Beat cake mix, water, egg whites, vegetable oil, and lemon extract together in a bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until batter is well combined, about 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Beat cream in a chilled bowl using an electric mixer until soft peaks are almost forming into stiff peaks; place bowl in refrigerator. 5. Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture. 6. Place 1 cake on a plate; top with blueberry pie filling. Place second cake atop blueberry filling. Generously frost cake with whipped cream cheese frosting.

or the multitude of travelers crossing the Interstate Bridge between Oregon and Washington, Jantzen Beach is simply a vast spread of shopping centers, restaurants, and hotels clustered on Hayden Island as you zoom past. Many will have a vague notion of the area being associated with the Jantzen brand of swimwear, but with each passing year the memories of the iconic Jantzen Beach Amusement Park dwindle into obscurity. Back in the day, hailed as the “Coney Island of the West,” Hayden Island was once home to the largest amusement park in the nation—a massive park encompassing 123 acres that was patronized by over 30 million people during its 42 years of operation. It all began in 1927 when William A. Logus and Leo F. Smith purchased forty acres on Hayden Island from the Portland Electric Power Company. Shortly thereafter, Logus and Smith launched the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, named after Carl Jantzen of swimwear fame; along with a number of Jantzen executives and several prominent members of the community, Carl 34 • LAKE OSWEGO LIFE/STYLE • APRIL/MAY 2022
Jantzen underwrote the entire $500,000 project. Jantzen and his fellow investors envisioned the park as a showcase to promote swimming as a public activity, which later included the company’s sponsorship of national “Learn to Swim” weeks throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. With swimming as a primary focus of the park, four gigantic swimming pools were constructed as well as a natatorium (an indoor swimming facility). The Jantzen Beach Amusement Park officially opened on May 26, 1928. In addition to the swimming pools, the park also featured a number of popular rides including the Big Dipper Roller Coaster and a custom-made carousel. Constructed by C.W. Parker, the “American Amusement King,” the carousel was hand-crafted in 1921 and first operated at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. After surviving a fire, the carousel was later shipped to Portland where it became a highlight attraction at Jantzen Beach. Of the various rides created by Parker, only the carousel survives
today. It resides in the custodianship of Restore Oregon, an organization with plans to reassemble and install the carousel in a permanent new home that will “serve as a new attraction for our region.” On a spooky note, the carousel was for years the source of ghost stories. A number of youngsters, as well as maintenance workers, claimed to have witnessed ghostly children on or about the ride. The Big Dipper Roller Coaster, designed by Carl Phare, took center stage as the featured attraction of the park. The “Dipper,” a gigantic amusement construction, boasted to be the largest roller coaster west of Chicago, traveling 3800 feet per minute with 14 dips, 5 of them in excess of 35 feet, and the steepest dip which plunged riders 70 feet straight down. For the more faint of heart, the park offered a Kiddy Dipper roller coaster, and included arcade games and picnic grounds. One of the biggest draws of the park was the Golden Canopy Ballroom, which became Portland’s premier dancehall during the 1930s and ‘40s. In 1942, Clara Shepard of the Spectator newspaper wrote: “If a young man about town says dancin’ to a girl, he might as well say Jantzen Beach at the same time…for they are synonymous as far as she is concerned. The Golden Canopy Ballroom features the sweetest swing in the country every night of the park’s season, with a parade of big name dance bands moving across its board…” Shepard’s description was no exaggeration. World famous musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong performed at Jantzen Beach to the delight of thousands who flocked to the park for unforgettable nights of top shelf entertainment. By the late 1940s, however, Jantzen Beach was in decline. Vanport, a town created during World War II to house workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver (hence the name Vanport), was located at today’s Delta Park area and provided one of Jantzen Beach’s primary revenue sources. As the second largest city in Oregon at the time (by population), the residents of Vanport frequented Jantzen Beach for its wide variety of entertainment right in their own “backyard.” After the Vanport Flood of 1948, which effectively destroyed the majority of the town, and the
decline in population after the war, this important revenue stream dried up for the once thriving park. Changes in the society at large also contributed to the decline of Jantzen Beach. While television rose to prominence as America’s go-to entertainment, people frequently opted to stay home rather than venture out during their leisure time. When they did venture out, the boundless freedom of the automobile—now a staple of American society—offered endless opportunities for recreational activities. The allure of the traditional amusement park had lost its luster. In 1960, a fire broke out in the Tunnel of Love, resulting in its destruction as well as that of the Fun House and the Dutch Mill. In the face of incidents and declining attendance, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park closed its doors after Labor Day weekend in 1970. Following the closure of the amusement park, Jantzen Beach Center, a large shopping complex, eventually arose, and for some years housed the historic C.W. Parker carousel, which may operate again one day should Restore Oregon succeed in constructing a new home for it. The pumping system for the swimming pools of the old amusement park are still in use today, providing drinking water for residents of the Hayden Island area. And wooden remnants of the Big Dipper Roller Coaster live on at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on S.E. 28th St. in Portland, where they have been repurposed as tables, as well as the bar itself. So the next time you’re caught in traffic on I-5 near Jantzen Beach, allow yourself to daydream a little about the “Coney Island of the West,” that famous amusement park on the Columbia from days gone by that brought joy to millions, and memories to last a lifetime, for those fortunate enough to share in the experience.
