Trouble With Topping Trees

he term “topping” is often misused. To arborists, it means shortening a tree at a set height with blunt heading cuts, and doing so without regard to the natural structure of the tree. When this is done, the cut branch dies back, exposing the wood to pests, disease and decay. A heading cut also stimulates vigorous sprouts below the cut, which grow faster than the original branches. The tree then develops many thin vertical branches. This approach creates more growth and weaker shoots that easily break and defeats the purpose. More “topping” is done to deal with all the growth, and a vicious cycle begins as the tree grows faster and taller on more damaged branches. Competent, ethical arborists should not “top” a tree. The best approach is a

Thinning cuts allow trees to grow over the cut, sealing out pests, disease and decay. Trees never fix the damaged tissue. They can grow new tissue over damage and sprout new branches, but these are much weaker. The result? The tree looks awful, becomes less healthy and is more likely to have branches break. After all, this charming beach community is a short scenic drive from the city, the perfect place to stroll the beach, shop, or enjoy an ice cream cone while people-watching on Main Street. Have you ever wondered though, about the origins of this cherished beach community? Archaeological records indicate the Cannon Beach area was inhabited by early ancestors of the indigenous Tillamook people as early as the 15th century.
