How to Carve the Perfect Pumpkin

Everyone can be an artist at pumpkin carving because it’s actually easier than it looks. These 10 terrifying tips will have your gory gourds looking great for the entire spooky season. 1. START WITH THE PERFECT PUMPKIN Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve. Wash it with warm soapy water to prevent mold and dry it off with a paper towel. 2. CUT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP For the lid, instead of cutting the top, cut the bottom. Cutting your lid from the bottom helps prevent the sides from caving in later. This also keeps moisture inside the pumpkin longer. 3. SCOOP OUT ALL THE PULP (strings and seeds) in a spiral motion until the pumpkin is clean inside, not one scoop at a time, and everything will come out in one drop. You can use the special “claw” that comes with a pumpkin carving kit, an ice cream scoop, or a large wooden spoon. 4. YOU CAN USE PREMADE DESIGNS from a pumpkin carving kit, from the internet, or design one yourself. For your own design, sketch it out on paper first and trace the sketch with a thick marker. Whichever design you choose, use masking tape to tape the design to the front of your pumpkin. Poke holes along the lines of your design with the poker from a pumpkin carving kit, or a pencil will also work.

5. WHEN YOU’RE READY TO CARVE, put the pumpkin in your lap with a towel (or wear pants you don’t mind getting dirty). Carving is easier when the pumpkin “face” is close to you, and this can reduce neck or back strain instead of leaning over the dining table. A sharp medium serrated knife is best for cutting medium to large features, and an X-Acto knife or small knife from a pumpkin carving kit is best for carving the small details. 6. WITH YOUR SMALL KNIFE, start by cutting the small details first so the pumpkin is more intact; if you cut the large features first you can accidentally break it. After the small details are cut, cut out the large features with your medium serrated knife. When everything is roughly cut out, you can use the small knife to clean up the edges of your design. You can also use the discarded pieces creatively! The pulp can make a great tongue, vomit, or messy hair. Smaller pieces can be used for spikes, eyebrows, or teeth. Be creative!

8. CREATE A CHIMNEY You can use a real candle such as a votive, or you can skip this step and use an electric candle. For a real flame, light the candle on the bottom lid and place the pumpkin over it. After a few minutes the “ceiling” will have blackened. Cut around this blackened spot to make a small hole to vent the candle heat. 9. SPRINKLE CINNAMON INSIDE Cinnamon will prevent fungus, and when you light the candle your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. 10. ROAST THE PUMPKIN SEEDS! After removing the pulp, wash the seeds in a colander and dry between a towel. In a large bowl, toss the seeds with olive oil, salt, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper, or season to your liking. Spread the seeds evenly on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes, tossing the seeds every 5 minutes for even browning. When the seeds are golden brown and radiate a cozy nut aroma, they’re done! Pumpkin seeds are a great source of fiber, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and iron.

THE LAZY EYE BILLIARDS AND BISTRO

hen we think of pool halls, often we think of dark, dingy, sometimes fetid places. Perhaps they used to reek of smoke, but now they just reek of spilled beer and old smoke from years ago. The food is usually about as fresh and cheap as the beer. But that’s not always the case. There is a danger in making generalized assumptions and by doing so, you may find yourself missing out on some of the best “hidden gems” in the area. Case in point, The Lazy Eye in Forest Grove.

eye, of course! The fact that she named the place after what many would perhaps consider an unfortunate condition says all you need to know about Mindy. She is a force to be reckoned with! She is the most wonderful, spirited, ambitious, and kind person you’ll ever meet! She was blind for much of her childhood but doctors were able to mostly cure her except for the lazy eye and tunnel vision. She had to work for years to learn how to see again, and eye-handcoordination exercises (like pool and darts) were one of the best ways she could do that. Fish tanks, also—watching the fish swim around—helped immensely, and that is why you’ll see fish tanks scattered throughout the hall. She considers herself a fun and quirky person and this business is an extension of that.

On the surface, The Lazy Eye is, yes, a pool hall. And yes, it’s a very old building and it has been occupied by a pool hall for quite some time. However, if you judge this book by the cover only—or even if you haven’t been by but are judging it by the “synopsis on the back page flap”—then you are going to miss out on one of the best kept secrets in Forest Grove! The business was just purchased in 2019 by current owners Mindy and Don Yeargin. As mentioned, it was a pool hall prior to that but they went in and completely gutted the whole place! They spent months tearing out the old flooring (revealing beautiful hardwood floors beneath), cleaning the walls (revealing a gorgeous hidden mural that’s been there for who knows how long), replacing 100% of the old plumbing and electrical systems, remodeling the restrooms, replacing the lighting and repainting and refinishing every surface from front to back. If it ever was a dingy, stinky place, it certainly isn’t that way now! It’s clean, comfortable, and welcoming. And it’s now dubbed The Lazy Eye. An usual name to be sure, and why is it called that? Because Mindy, the owner, has a lazy 10 • FOREST GROVE COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

Besides the full remodel, the true key to their success lies in the fact that Mindy and Don have created a warm and family-friendly establishment. They have made a concerted effort to appeal to a wider audience. They have 9 ft and 7 ft tables, 4 of which are Diamond pool tables (top of the line). They have dart boards. They have Giant Jenga. They have TVs and they will soon have Open Mic Night. There is a multitude of fun to be had here and minors are even welcome before 9:00 pm! If you are looking to have the perfect family fun night, this is the place to come! And part of that commitment to being a family establishment lies in their commitment to producing great food. Again, this is a pool hall and a bar, but it’s so much more than that! The front section is an Ice Cream and Coffee Shop. They always have at least 9 flavors of delicious, local, Alpenrose Dairy Ice Cream available. They serve Portland Coffee Company coffee. And if there is a style or flavor combination you can concoct, they can fix it! They are also one of the only places in the area who can make true Italian Sodas! The middle section is the restaurant (that’s also where the mural is). This is where you sit at your table and enjoy a nice drink with

a nice meal and relax. Almost everything on the menu is handmade! Jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks, burgers, pita bread, french fries—all fresh, and all hand-made! 100% lamb gyros! Tzatziki sauce, ranch, and nacho cheese—handmade! There is almost nothing on the menu that has not been made fresh in-house and even the meats are all organic and come from Carlton Farms (another local company). Words just can’t do this place justice! This is a local business run by local people supporting the local economy by using local produce and supplies. You literally can’t do better than what Mindy and Don are doing here! And the drinks are as good as the food! They have 5 specialty cocktails on the menu at all times for $6, not to mention a plethora of European beers (provided by Portland distributors Point Blank, Mulitus, and Columbia). And Southern BBQ pulled pork is coming in October! Please, do not assume this is just another pool hall. You’d be missing out on the fact that it is also a family-style restaurant with incredible food, a delicious coffee and ice cream shop, and a terrific bar to boot.

Look to the October skies ... If you live in the northern hemisphere, you’ll be rewarded for keeping your eyes to the skies in October, as the Draconid Meteor Shower can be seen. It contains a single comet that is visible exclusively in the northern hemisphere between October 6th and 10th. An even more impressive meteor shower that is visible in both hemispheres is the Orionid meteor shower, which runs from October 2nd until early November. It is named after Orion as it is usually visible in the same part of the sky as the constellation. Local Home Based Cat and Kitten Rescue Written By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

bout four years ago, a family asked Brittney Hazel and her wife Kendall if they could help find a home for a stray litter of kittens that had been found in a barn. That was the beginning of Hazel’s House, a cat-and-kitten rescue operation that continues to this day. It is a mission that has put hundreds of stray and abandoned cats in homes where they’re safe, healthy and loved. The name “Hazel’s House” might be a bit misleading for some, conjuring an image of some cramped, smelly facility full of frightened cats. That is certainly not the case in reality. “We don’t have a site,” Brittney explains. “We do all this out of our own house. The majority of the rescue work is all in foster care.” That means a lot of networking with volunteers, screening families that want to help, and matching them up with cats before they go to a permanent home. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they’re not doing in-home visits at this time, and communication is done through the non-profit’s Facebook page, where messages are returned quickly. Hazel’s House can help with semi-feral kittens, mothers with litters, abandoned litters and orphaned kittens, and bottle babies. They can set traps to contain the cats if necessary, and are able to work within a 25-mile range of Newberg. They also have helpful information about low cost spay/neuter clinics and vet care. Hazel’s House started out handling around 50 animals a year, but it’s been growing rapidly. In their second and third year, they started a partnership with the Newberg Animal Shelter, and the 2 organizations have a wonderful working relationship which has helped support that growth. This year, Hazel’s House has taken care of about 200 cats. How does the adoption process work? It all happens on Facebook. “When a cat or kitten is ready for adoption, we will post their picture and information and how long

we are accepting applications on them for,” Brittney says. It’s not a first-come, first-serve basis, so customers should not expect to be able to “reserve” or “pre-adopt” an animal. “At Hazel’s House we strive to place cats and kittens in their ‘purrfect’ forever home.” Adoption fees are $150 for kittens and $50 for adult cats. Kittens will be started on vaccines, flea treated, dewormed, microchipped, and with a spay/neuter contract. Cats will be current on vaccines, fixed, dewormed, flea treated and microchipped. ary Elizabeth Roher was a young widow when she met Lewis Stinson Fairchild in Vancouver, Washington. After marrying in 1867, they came to Oregon, where they lived the rest of their lives in Washington County. They first homesteaded in the Gaston area and then later retired to Cornelius. During that time, while growing crops and raising livestock, they also started a family with nine kids: three girls (Sarah, Louisa & Emma) and six boys (Joseph, Edward, Charles, Elmer, James & Robert). After 52 years together, Mary’s husband Lewis died in 1919. Mary continued to live in their house on the corner of Alpine and 10th in Cornelius where they had resided for over 20 years. Her family became concerned that Mary was now in her 70s, getting older, and that she would walk every week to Forest Grove and back to shop. Her kids started to pressure her

to move to Forest Grove. Soon, Mary moved into this house, which was next door to her son Joseph and his wife Nora, who lived on the corner at 1504 Birch Street. The Fairchild family thought that they could keep an eye on Mom from there. So into her 90s, they watched her split cords of wood for her two stoves, hand spade a large garden in the side yard, and continue to walk regularly to Cornelius to visit her friends there! Mary loved to peel a large onion each evening and eat it like an apple. There have been five other owners of this house since then, until when in 2006, Carole and Philip Clark took on the task of completely renovating it into the beautiful house that it is today. We are thankful for all of the hard work that they have done, and are pleased to present to them on behalf of the Friends of Historic Forest Grove a plaque recognizing the Mary Elizabeth Fairchild House.

oseph Fairchild was born in 1872 to Mary & Lewis Fairchild who came here about 1867 to Washington County to homestead. Joseph grew up as a farmer and soon had some land of his own northwest of Forest Grove. In 1906 he married Nora Laughlin of Forest Grove. After buying Lots 14, 15, & 16 of Block 7 in the Southpark Addition, the new couple were the first to live in the house he built there.

who had been looking for a long time for just the right place to be their first home. They fell in love with the neighborhood and this home. We are so glad that they did and we are very pleased that we can present them with a plaque recognizing the history of the Joseph & Nora Fairchild House.

Joseph and Nora were very family and community minded. Nora was a dedicated and consistent church worker serving as Clerk and Treasurer at the local Christian Church. She was a staunch supporter of the Women’s Suffrage Movement and in 1913 the local newspaper had a front page picture of her along with the story that “Mrs. Nora E. Fairchild had the distinction of being the first woman in this city to cast a ballot at an official election.” Nora died in October, 1956, just shortly after celebrating their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary. Joseph continued to live in the house they shared for so long until his death three years later.
