Winter Hikes in Oregon

By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

W

e’re a tenacious bunch here in the Northwest. Despite the inclement weather, very little deters us from venturing forth into the great outdoors. It can be dark, raining and below freezing, and you’ll find us bundled in our coats and huddled together, obstinately “enjoying” our random outdoor adventures. Hiking is a favorite pastime among Oregonians come rain or shine, but these three hikes are considered some of the best during the winter months.

1. Crater Lake National Park: Garfield Peak Trail — this is one of Oregon’s most popular attractions. The lake itself is the deepest in the whole of the United States and its blue crystalline waters are a sight to behold. Hiking the crest is an experience in itself, with awe-inspiring panoramic views that will literally take your breath away. Especially in the winter, when the peaks are covered in snow, this is a challenging but incredibly rewarding hike. Be sure to check with the National Park Service before you go, since excessive snow can sometimes impede travel.

2. Mount Hood: Trillium Lake Loop — Trillium Lake is one of Oregon’s best kept secrets. A quaint little lake nestled into the forest just below the peak of the mountain, this gorgeous area boasts not only a fantastic loop trail, but also camping, boating, fishing and swimming. In the winter months, the snow-covered trees surrounding the lake add to the majestic reflection of Mount Hood in the background, creating a magical winter wonderland. The trail is relatively

6 | Euphoric Magazine

HIKES ENHANCED BY WINTER WEATHER! flat, so it can accommodate hikers at various skill levels, and a portion of the trail consists of a boardwalk hovering over the water for a unique “walking-on-water” experience.

3. Silver Falls State Park: Winter Falls Trail — The largest state park in Oregon, Silver Falls covers more than 9,000 acres and has over 24 miles of walking trails, 14 miles of horse trails and a four mile bike path. Running along the banks of Silver Creek, Canyon Trail passes a whopping 10 waterfalls, four of which take the hiker behind the falls! Winter Falls Trail highlights the falls of the same name and after a good snow, its already stunning presentation is that much more stunning. As always, hike responsibly. Enjoy this beautiful state we call home, but leave no trace behind. And remember, as John Muir once said, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”

FARM FOCUS

The Heart & Soul

By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Tyler Maddox

of Belushi’s Farm

J

im Belushi needs no introduction. On the big screen, he is the hilarious star of films like “About Last Night,” “Mr. Destiny,” and “Taking Care of Business.” On the small screen, he is known for stealing every scene in shows like “Saturday Night Live” and “According to Jim.” He is one of the most unassuming, affable and beloved actors in Hollywood, and it all comes from a place of genuine authenticity. He is one of those rare stars who, in person, proves to be exactly who you always imagined and hoped he would be. I had the distinct pleasure of speaking to Mr. Belushi about his latest venture, the marijuana farm he has developed here in Eagle Point, Belushi’s Farm. Every bit as down-to-earth, funny and friendly as his movie star persona would suggest, Jim is also a profoundly spiritual man. He admits that this entire process, from finding the land to building his home and his business, has been a spiritual awakening of sorts. It all began 12 years ago while visiting a friend in Shady Cove. After emerging from a swim in the waters of the Rogue River, he felt baptized, reborn, and he committed soon after to buying property in the area where he could continue to commune with nature. Apparently there weren’t many opportunities to do that in Los Angeles!

“EVERY TIME I CULTIVATE THE LAND, I GET PULLED MORE AND MORE INTO THE MEDICINE AND THE JOY OF THIS WORK.” — JIM BELUSHI Moving here and building his new business — chronicled in both the DIY Network’s “Building Belushi” and Discovery Channel’s “Growing Belushi” — has been a phenomenal experience for the actor. He stated that the title of his current show, “Growing Belushi,” is a bit of a double entendre in that it refers not only to the crops he is growing, but also his growth as a human being. “There is something special about this land,” he stated, and he has made a concerted effort at every opportunity to honor it, the indigenous people of the area and their spirits. From the beginning, he made the decision to use primarily repurposed wood and old-school construction techniques to build both his home and outbuildings. A totem pole and sweat lodge were erected on the property by local Indigenous 8 | Euphoric Magazine

Americans, and Jim holds regular purification ceremonies. He shares the land with a neighbor who brings his cows down to graze every winter. He allows the Ashland Elks Lodge (who owned the land years ago) to continue holding their annual picnics there. And the old stage, which has been rebuilt, is where he and his friends get together to rock out and hold benefits for various causes. The farm itself, in Jim’s words, was created as a gateway to healing. He believes very strongly in the medicinal properties cannabis has to offer. That, combined with the spiritual strength of the land, the waters and the all-organic materials he chooses to grow with, come together to produce a truly unique and special product. Jim is a student of the artform, and in his quest to heal, he has learned that it’s not so much about the THC as it is about the terpenes.

There is a common misconception that the higher the THC levels, the better, regardless of anything else. But according to Jim, that approach lacks finesse. High THC levels will get you stoned, no doubt, but they won’t get you high. Ideally, most people are seeking a more pleasurable experience, one without the inevitable paranoia, persistent munchies, etc. With that in mind, THC should be at a respectable level, but more importantly, so should the terpenes. This is not a common concern in the industry, but for him, personally, 19 to 21% THC with terpenes at 1.5 to 3% is the perfect balance. It’s what makes all the difference. And it’s this kind of attention to detail that sets Jim’s signature brands above the competition. “Chasing Magic” is his premium farm brand, and it’s unlike anything you have ever tried. You will smell, taste and feel the land. This produces a smooth and pleasurable high like no other. “The Blues Brothers” is his working man’s brand. More widely affordable but still superior in quality, this brand delivers on the same level

as the band which inspired it: a 10-star, quadruple-A experience! “Captain Jack’s” is a phenomenon in the industry. It’s “the smell of SNL” and, like Jim himself, requires no introduction. Suffice it to say, this is the stuff of legends. And finally, “Good Ugly Weed” is exactly as its title suggests: It isn’t the prettiest stuff to look at, but otherwise meets all of Jim’s strictest standards of quality. Jim Belushi is a consummate professional. He has put his heart and soul into this endeavor, and we are the fortunate beneficiaries. He is a humble steward of the land and has genuinely come to love our state and the communities he serves. He is a big supporter of the Last Prisoner Project and regularly holds benefits at the farm to raise money for a variety of causes. Check out his website belushisfarm.com for more information and to find out where you can purchase his fantastic products and merch.

WHAT’S COOKIN’

Let’s Get Baked:

Yields: 30 – 32 cookies Total Time: ~2 hours

Molasses Cookies

2¼ cups flour 1½ tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. ground ginger 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon ¼ tsp. ground cloves ¼ tsp. nutmeg ¼ tsp. salt 1 stick plus 3½ tbsp soft butter ½ tbsp. soft cannabutter ½ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup sugar 1/3 cup dark molasses 1 egg 2 tsp vanilla

1) In a large bowl combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

2) In a separate bowl, cream together butter and cannabutter. 3) In the second bowl, add in both sugars until combined, followed by molasses, egg, and vanilla. Don’t forget to scrape your sides. 4) Combine wet and dry ingredients slowly until they form a wet dough. 5) Cover dough in cling film and chill for 1 hour. 6) Preheat oven to 350º F. Roll chilled dough into 1 tbsp. balls. Roll balls in granulated sugar and place on a lined baking tray, roughly 3 inches apart. 7) Bake for 11–12 minutes or until edges are set. Remove from oven, let cool and enjoy!

We recommend ½ tbsp. of cannabis-infused butter* to achieve roughly 0.5 mg per cookie, but this can be adjusted more or less. When adjusting the amount of cannabutter remember to adjust the normal butter to match. There should be ¾ cup total of both butters. *Our dosage is based on a 29mg/teaspoon cannabis butter. This dosage may vary with homemade recipes and it is recommended that you adjust the dosage for your cannabutter and comfortability.

HIT OF HISTORY

The Twinkie:

A Sweet Legacy Unwrapped By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

A

spongy, golden cake with creamy white filling: for most of us this description immediately evokes a single word, “Twinkie.” Whether a nostalgic favorite from your childhood or still a go-to favorite at snack time, have you ever wondered where this yummy classic originated? The story of the Twinkie takes us back to Schiller Park, Illinois, in 1930. Canadian-born baker, James Alexander Dewar, an employee of the Continental Baking Company (later known as Hostess Brands), realized that a number of the company’s machines for creating cream-filled strawberry shortcakes were sitting idle due to strawberries being out of season. With a little ingenuity, Dewar conceived of a new product that substituted banana cream for the traditional vanilla cream and dubbed the new cream-filled cake “Twinkie.” As for the name, legend has it that Dewar saw a billboard in town advertising “Twinkle Toe Shoes” and

12 | Euphoric Magazine

drew inspiration from that. It’s not clear whether the shape of the shoes or simply the name was the driving force behind his decision, but to this day, people the world over know the iconic snack as the Twinkie. With the onset of World War II, the cream filling inside the Twinkie switched from banana cream to vanilla cream. The change came about due to the rationing of bananas, but vanilla cream proved to be a hit with customers who preferred it above all other flavored fillings. Over the years, Hostess experimented with alternate cream fillings such as strawberry, and for a short time, re-introduced the original banana flavor, but in the end vanilla cream was always the flavor of choice for Twinkie aficionados. Despite their hallowed place in lunch boxes across America, Twinkies transcended their role as a mere snack cake to become a part of urban legend

and even earned a place in the lexicon of the legal profession. In pop culture, Twinkies have garnered attention for both their perceived longevity of shelf life as well as their lack of nutritional value. According to urban legends, Twinkies have a virtually infinite shelf life with stories claiming that the famous snack cakes could remain unspoiled in their original packaging for periods ranging anywhere from 10 to 100 years. During the 2012 Super Bowl, Chevy ran a commercial featuring the Silverado in an apocalyptic scenario that alluded to the Twinkie’s extreme durability. In truth, however, a Hostess executive revealed to The New York Times in 2000 that the shelf life of Twinkies was actually relatively short, generally seven to 10 days. Studies later demonstrated that prior to 2012, Twinkies had a maximum shelf life of 26 days. In 2012, additional preservatives were added extending the maximum shelf life to 45 days.

In 1984, the movie “Ghostbusters” introduced the Twinkie to countries across the globe previously unfamiliar with the famous American snack cake. In the movie, the character Egon Spengler uses a Twinkie to demonstrate rising levels of psychokinetic energy in the environment. He compares the current level of psychokinetic energy in New York City to a Twinkie. He points out that due to the recent extraordinary increases in the energy that it would result in a Twinkie 35 feet long weighing 600 pounds. In the legal profession, lawyers in San Francisco argued that their client committed a crime due to depression resulting from a shift in his diet from healthy food to Twinkies and other sugary snacks. This argument became known as the “Twinkie Defense.” Contrary to popular belief, however, the lawyers did not actually assert that the Twinkies caused their client’s actions, but rather that his excessive consumption of Twinkies was symptomatic of his underlying depression. On the culinary front, Christopher Sell, a Twinkie devotee from England, came up with the notion of freezing the snack cake, battering it and then deep-frying it in oil. Thus was born the first deep-fried Twinkie. Sell described his new invention: “Something magical occurs when the pastry hits the hot oil. The creamy white vegetable shortening filling liquefies, impregnating the sponge cake with its luscious vanilla flavor.... The cake itself softens and warms, nearly melting, contrasting with the crisp, deep-fried crust in a buttery and suave way...” In 2002, restaurant owner Clint Mullen introduced the deep-fried Twinkie novelty snack at state fairs. In 2016, Walmart stores even began carrying pre-packaged frozen versions of the deepfried Twinkie. As popular as the Twinkie was, however, trends toward healthier lifestyles and eating habits were taking a toll on the sales of the famous product. In 2012, after reporting a 20% drop in Twinkie sales from the previous year, Hostess announced its plans to discontinue operations, citing that its customers had migrated to healthier foods. On November 16, 2012, Hostess filed for bankruptcy and Twinkie production at all plants came to a halt. Not surprisingly, the public outcry at the loss of the Twinkie was tremendous. It wasn’t long before companies were vying

for the rights to restore the beloved Twinkie to its fans around the world. Apollo Global Management & Metropoulos & Company won the bidding war for the sum of $410 million. The joint companies revived the Hostess brand reintroducing Twinkies, Ho Hos and other Hostess products to the market in 2013. If it seems like today’s Twinkies are smaller than those of your childhood, it’s not your imagination. Just prior to the bankruptcy, Hostess had reduced the size of the Twinkie from a total overall mass of 42.5 grams to 38.5 grams, and the reintroduced Twinkie of 2013 retained this formula. Despite the slight reduction in size, it’s likely that Twinkie fans around the world are more than happy to compromise a little rather than going without their favorite snack cake altogether. For its legions of fans around the globe, nothing will ever take the place of the moist, golden cake with vanilla cream filling known as the Twinkie. Perhaps Time Magazine, after ranking the Twinkie No. 1 on its list of 10 “iconic” junk foods, said it best, stating that “they’ve been a staple in our popular culture, and above all, in our hearts. Often criticized for its lack of any nutritional value whatsoever, the Twinkie has managed to persevere as a cultural and gastronomic icon.” EuphoricMagazine.com | 13

Garcia Birthday Band

By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Marshall Snyder

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S GRATEFUL DEAD COVER BAND

J

erry Garcia was an artist in the truest sense of the term. Known widely for his role as a founding member, principal songwriter, vocalist and lead guitarist for The Grateful Dead, he was also well-respected in the industry for his technical skills and innovative guitar playing. He was a central figure in the 1960s counterculture movement who “walked the talk,” emphasizing creativity and experimentation in his music while embodying a sense of personal freedom and non-conformity in his daily life. Although it began before his death in 1995, since his death, there has been an ever-growing “movement” to keep his music alive. There are now literally hundreds of tribute bands across the country comprising what has become a significant, vibrant and dynamic scene. It seems that Jerry lives on! Of course, when it comes to cover bands, there is a diverse range with regard to quality and intent. Some seek only to mimic, to attentively replicate note-for-note what came before. Others seek to dive deeper and invoke the spirit of the original band, utilizing the framework of the songs, but then respectfully allowing their own artistic expression to drive the music forward into new, exciting and unexpected territories — just as Jerry would have wanted! Of the latter, the Garcia Birthday Band (GBB), hailing from our own backyard here in Portland, is one of the very best in the country. I had the pleasure of speaking with keyboardist/vocalist Adam King, who has been with the band since 2015. Warm, intelligent and enthusiastic, Adam stated the band has been

14 | Euphoric Magazine

playing for over 20 years. It began back around the turn of the century when McMenamins Edgefield decided to throw a birthday party in honor of Jerry and needed a band who could not just play the music but also embody the spirit of The Dead. It was then that the Garcia Birthday Band was born! Since then they have become a McMenamins staple, and a favorite house band playing regularly at shows all over Oregon and beyond. And the crowds just keep growing larger! This music is as popular now as it ever was, and because GBB plays without boundaries or restrictions, often following jams into unexplored territories, no set is ever played exactly the same way twice. From their website: “Using The Dead’s repertoire as a springboard for limitless potential and improvisation, GBB is a cornerstone of the modern Grateful Dead universe, and their fans have come to expect the unexpected as the norm. Placing no boundaries on eras of the Dead’s career or catalog, and drawing on decades of individual and shared experience, GBB play the music through an auditory kaleidoscope. Composed of some of the most ace players of the Oregon music community, the band makes every show an act of exploration, both musically and spiritually.” GBB live is more than just a show; it’s an experience, and it’s one you can’t miss! Catch them at McMenamins or any of their other shows and festivals throughout the year. Check out their website: garciabirthdayband.com or follow them on Facebook or Instagram.
