Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.
Easter Bunny
According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!
Easter Eggs
From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children. 4 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Easter Candy
Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter. Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

TWO WOLVES TAPROOM
Feed the Wolf! A
By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Laurel Bice
ttention folks! If you are not already aware, there is a brand new watering hole in town that just celebrated its grand opening last month! Husband and wife team, Tyler and Danielle Genovese, are incredibly excited to be opening their doors, and aspire to be the new community gathering spot for adults and children alike. Providing an elevated experience in dining, drinks, and atmosphere, Two Wolves Taproom is the hottest new place in town! The name, Two Wolves, is derived from the old Cherokee legend regarding the endless battle that is being waged inside every one of us. It is the battle of two forces, the luminous (the white wolf) and the dark (the black wolf), the duality of good versus evil, which defines us. Our personalities, and how we present
ourselves to the public, is in large part dependent upon which wolf we have chosen to more consistently feed. Tyler and Danielle hope that you will frequent Two Wolves Taproom to feed the wolf inside of you! Tyler and Danielle have set out to create something slightly unique with this endeavor: an upscale bar which offers fantastic food and drinks, in a friendly, clean environment, which caters to the whole family. For the adults: they serve all of the best burgers, sandwiches, and salads, plus 15 beers on tap (always on rotation but mostly from local breweries), wine, and hard liquor. For the kids, they’re currently in the process of creating an entirely separate menu, which will consist of all kinds of delicious treats to entice even the most jaded of picky eaters! For those looking for healthier options or who have dietary restrictions, they will be offering alternatives

to your average pub fare. Straight out of the gate, they have a vegan chicken option, cauliflower wings and bites, lettuce wraps and gluten free buns (for those with gluten sensitivities), and vegan salad dressings. They also have separate fryers so there is no cross-contamination between the vegan and non-vegan offerings. In light of the fact that they have literally just opened their doors, the focus has been placed solely on perfecting operations. And they have big ideas for the future. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for exciting new developments on the horizon. As they become more established, plans to expand the menu and the number of taps will become top priorities. In addition, one of the most exciting items on the docket: Danielle plans to sponsor local events and activities to ensure that their establishment becomes a consistent and integral part of your local community lifestyle. Plant classes (how to build and propagate terrariums), Paint & Brew, Yoga & Brew, Live Music; Danielle has a thousandand-one ideas and can’t wait to start implementing them. Bottom line: there won’t be another place in town where you can find better food, a better atmosphere, or have more fun, than at Two Wolves Taproom. Support local business and discover the best new place in town while you’re at it! Bring the whole family, and feed the wolf!

Zootopia (2016) - PG
Not an Easter movie, but it’s about a rabbit, so close enough. From elephants to mice, the metropolis of Zootopia is a melting pot where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first bunny on the Zootopia Police, she realizes how hard it is to bring order to a city of such chaos, especially when you feel so small. Determined to prove herself, Judy leaps at the chance to solve a mysterious case. She’s forced to work with a wily and sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her job impossible. But eventually the two discover, as a small bunny who was once bullied, and a fox who was treated as a thief before he even knew the word, they have more in common than they think!
Here Comes Peter Cottontail
(1971) - TV-G
This 1971 stop motion animated TV special was produced by Rankin/Bass Productions and was based on the 1957 novel The Easter Bunny That Overslept. In this fun and lighthearted flick, Peter Cottontail is a young Easter Bunny who lives in April Valley where all the other Easter bunnies live and work, making Easter candy, sewing bonnets, and decorating and delivering Easter eggs. Colonel Wellington B. Bunny is retiring as Chief Easter Bunny, and Peter and an evil bunny named January Q. Irontail are both vying for the job. But Irontail, voiced by Vincent Price!, of course wants to ruin Easter! 10 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Easter Parade (1948) - G
An Oscarwinning smash musical from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Easter Parade stars Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in this perfect film of nostalgia and escapism. When released it grossed six million dollars, and although six million sounds petty these days, the average movie ticket was 37 cents in 1948! When a Broadway star and a chorus girl fall in love, it culminates with a proposal that happens during the Easter Parade. After his first dance partner leaves, Don (Astaire) chooses a young and naive chorus girl, Hannah (Garland) as his protege. But it turns out she’s incredibly klutzy and confuses her left from her right. Funny, cute, and magically musical, Easter Parade holds up at 74 years old!
Willy Wonka (1971) - G
Probably Gene Wilder’s best movie, and not an Easter movie, but the definitive movie about candy! Willy Wonka, after years of seclusion, hides a handful of golden tickets in random chocolate bars around the world, and if found, children will be given a tour of the famed chocolate factory. Of course, Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe are the only good people in a crowd of selfish brats and classless parents, as the group gets smaller by one after each tour stop and its ensuing lesson and misadventure. Weird, fun, and pure classic cinema.

exhausting. It can also create an elevated level of anxiety. Subconsciously, we begin to tune people out. If something is deemed important, however, or if there is an emergency, we tend to pay close attention and may, in fact, understand every word. This may be a primary reason why hearing and mental fitness are interrelated. As we experience hearing loss, it becomes harder and harder to communicate with others. This often leads to a gradual social isolation—a major contributor to cognitive decline.”
Drawing upon his experience and expertise, Mark relates: “Most everyone is familiar with the quip, ‘they have selective hearing.’ What you possibly haven’t considered is that everyone with hearing loss has selective hearing. The reason for this is simple. When we must listen very carefully to understand what someone is saying, it can be mentally

WESTERN INTERLOCK INC.
Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space
R
By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer | Photos By Laurel Bice
etail, Wholesale, and DIY customers: Western Interlock is your one-stop shopping solution for all paving and retaining wall systems designed specifically for the Northwest! Outdoor living is on the rise, and more and more people are considering how they can enhance and transform their patchy lawns, untended flower beds, and generally unused outdoor spaces into something more functional, more aesthetically appealing, and more comfortable. Forbes even recognized this trend and named 2021 “The Year of the Yard.” As a consequence, the question that must be rolling around in people’s heads is, what are my options? Particularly here in the Northwest, where high water tables tend to flood uneven landscaping and moss overwhelms lawns and gardens, one of the more intelligent alternatives is hardscaping. Specifically, interlocking concrete pavers which come in a multitude of beautiful colors, styles, and patterns; more than you are probably aware! And the possibilities are endless: pave out the entire yard or just strategic portions in combination with your landscaping. Add a new retaining wall, a fire pit, or a pathway. Build a new patio space for your BBQ or that new outdoor furniture you purchased last year. You’re only restricted by your imagination, and as a result: no more backyard
lakes! No more mud! No more patchy lawns overrun by moss. Both in form and function, pavers are cleaner, easier to maintain, have higher curb appeal, and add significant value to your property! If that sounds like an attractive proposition, then Western Interlock should be your next stop! Western Interlock was founded in 1990 by Wyatt Pegg. Family has always been one of his top priorities, and that’s as true in his business as it is in his personal life. While visiting his soon-tobe father-in-law back in the 70s, Wyatt helped out on a
20 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
project which introduced him to the art of installing paving stones (as a part of that family’s landscaping business). That experience planted the seed of an idea—to bring pavers to the Willamette Valley—which would germinate some 15 years later with the development of his very own manufacturing facility in Rickreall. It’s that very same manufacturing facility where Western Interlock still resides today! Success has come as a result of their strict dedication to one simple founding principle: treat every employee and customer like members of the family! To them, customer service is not a department, it’s an attitude. They have a friendly and knowledgeable sales staff, yard personnel, and delivery drivers, many of whom have been with them for years. Several employees are even second generation! They certainly have no shortage of experienced team members, and their goal is to ensure that your experience with them, their product, and your completed project, exceeds your expectations. Company vice-president Landon Pegg stated, “as a family-owned business, we like to serve our customers directly!” After 30 years, Western Interlock is still the same independent, familyowned and operated, local business they started out to be! Their Rickreall retail facility and its gorgeous 10,000 sq ft. outdoor display still retains that same relaxed family atmosphere, and is still open to the public for tours. They still serve both retail and wholesale customers in Oregon and Washington, catering to all customers at every level of project involvement. Whether you want to hire a contractor to do the job for you, or participate in any of their regular DIY classes (on-line and in-person) and learn how to do it yourself, they are ready to assist at every step of the process. As a side note, because they are a local company, using materials that are both sourced and produced locally, they have not had to battle the same supply chain woes most of their larger, corporate competitors have. If it’s in their brochure, it’s almost assuredly in stock on any given day. Not to mention, the money you spend there goes straight back into the local economy! So if you’re ready to get started, regardless of your planned level of involvement, contact Western Interlock and allow their wonderful staff to guide you through your process from start to finish. Western Interlock is located at 10095 Rickreall Rd. in Rickreall. HISTORY
The History of Linfield Football: A Streak of Greatness By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
If
you’re a fan of college football, doubtless names like the “Crimson Tide,” “Fighting Irish,” and “Buckeyes” require no explanation. They speak for themselves. However, if you don’t follow NCAA Division III football, you might not realize that one of the nation’s most successful football programs resides right down the street in McMinnville, Oregon. None of the haloed Division I teams cited above can match the accomplishments of the Linfield University Wildcats. It started on an autumn day, October 6, 1956. Great things often have humble beginnings, and for Linfield football this was certainly the case. While it would have been more dramatic if the Wildcats’ win that day had been defined by a scintillating highlight moment—a miraculous last minute catch in the endzone, or a gutty goal line stand—such was not the case.
experience it and build up over the years.” For a team composed of small town kids and Korean War veterans attending college on the GI Bill, they had no idea that their victory over the Ramblers that fateful October day would be the start of the “Streak.” The “Streak,” which has now extended to 65 consecutive winning seasons as of 2021, is the longest active winning streak in NCAA history at any level. No other team is even close to this record, with the next in line coming in at 42. In retrospect, Ward admits no one at the time had any idea of what was to come. “I guarantee you that in 1956, nobody had any idea there would be any kind of streak,” he said. “We were just happy that we could get through the season with a win.”It was coach Paul Durham’s team that started the “Streak,” but it is a testament to the pride, tradition, and dedication to excellence, fostered by successive coaches over the last six decades, that is

Linfield had just suffered back-to-back losing seasons, and the 1956 campaign looked like more of the same. The opponent that Saturday was the Seattle Ramblers, a semi-pro team on a tear, who had defeated the Wildcats the previous year, and dominated the conference titles over the last 14 seasons. Against the odds, Linfield managed to defeat the Ramblers 13-7. From that game on, the Wildcats wouldn’t lose another game that season. This win over the Ramblers marked the beginning of what has become known as the “Streak.” Paul Ward, who played guard on the ’56 team, recalled: “Once we had a winning season, we knew we could win. We had to

responsible for Linfield’s relentless march through the NCAA history books. Looming at the forefront of the Mount Rushmore of Linfield football coaches is Ad Rutschman. Hired as head football coach in 1968, Rutschman continued the winning tradition until his retirement in 1991. Rutschman not only coached football, but baseball as well. Rutschman is still the only coach at any level to win national titles in both football and baseball. In his 24 seasons as Linfield ’s head football coach, Rutschman won three NAIA national championships (1982, 1984, 1986), and 15 Northwest Conference titles. Perhaps Rutschman’s most epic victory occurred in the 1984 national
championship game, where Linfield trailed Northwestern 22-0 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Against all odds, the Wildcats roared back to win the game 33-22. In addition to coaching football and baseball, Rutschman also served as Athletic Director for 25 years, during which time the school’s athletic facilities were greatly improved. Among these improvements were two new gymnasiums, a baseball stadium, and the 26,600 square foot field house named in honor of Rutschman and his wife Joan, for their dedication and service over 27 years to Linfield University. From 1992 to 2005, Linfield’s football program was led by Ed Langsdorf (1992-95) and Jay Locey (1996 -2005). Both coaches kept up the winning tradition. Langsdorf ’s brief tenure resulted in a record of 32-9-1 and three championships. Locey’s tally at the end of his Linfield career was a stellar 84-18 and six championships, including one NCAA Division III title. During one stretch of his impressive career, Locey coached the team to a 41-game win streak.

one another. This intense trust that grows from respect and brotherhood is interwoven with a blue-collar work ethic of toughness
and we are the hammer.” So next fa ll, as Linf ield continues on its historic ma rch through the NCAA record books, take a moment to appreciate what six decades of commitment to family, grit, and excellence can achieve. As Coach Smith ref lected, “From Coach Durha m to Coach Rutschman, to now, the secret to this place has been that we have really good people coming and being part of a really good program. When you focus on excellence and put the team first and you’re a man of your word, great things happen.” The “Streak ” lives on!
“It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. ‘We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school’.”
In 2006, the future of Linfield football was turned over to Joseph Smith, and he has not only continued the “Streak” but pushed the school into the NCAA record books. Under Smith’s leadership Linfield has amassed an incredible record of 13827, with a .836 win percentage, the highest percentage of any coach in Linfield history.
When Smith, a former defensive back for Linfield in the 90s, took over in 2006, he was well aware of the legacy he was responsible for and described his role as that of a “caretaker.” With Locey’s departure, Smith understood that the decision to hire him had been carefully considered. “It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. “We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school.” The Smith era at Linfield has been nothing short of remarkable. For a school that offers no football scholarships, a modest budget for athletics, and typically doesn’t attract big time recruits with NFL aspirations and talent, the question remains: “How does Linfield do it?” How do the Wildcats continue to churn out victories, winning seasons, and championships? Ultimately, how do they keep the “Streak ” alive? Smith credits a number of factors, foremost of which is the sense of family that permeates the entire Wildcat program. Caring for

and a thirst for excellence. Ryan Carlson, a defensive star on the 90s era teams, sums it up beautifully: “Once you’re in our Linfield family, you’re connected to 60 years of people who have had those core principles shape their young lives. Those life experiences continue to breed an incredible amount of love and loyalty towards the program.” As inspiration to his players, Smith periodically invites guest speakers to address the team. One of the speakers, Bretton Brown, an Army Ranger and a friend of Smith’s, imparted words from the Rangers’ credo that resonated with the team: “We are Men of Action. We do the heavy lifting. We are the walls,

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS Written By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

ransform that embarrassing, worn out, and outdated kitchen or bathroom into the beautiful, new, luxurious space you’ve always wanted, and with minimal demolition! Home renovations are never enjoyable. As a rule, they tend to be messy, costly, and incredibly disruptive, often spanning weeks if not months. That’s not the case, however, when you hire Granite Transformations! Their unique concept addresses these issues by preserving and utilizing the majority of your existing functional assets, and in essence, performing more of a “facelift” than a complete remodel. That equates to less mess, lower costs (40% less on average than a full remodel), and far less of a disruption to your daily life. And the results are astounding! Granite Transformations is a worldwide franchiser with some 240 franchises around the globe. They have been perfecting their methods of operation for over 20 years. Local franchisee owner Dan Lappin purchased his location, which services Oregon and southwest Washington, 6 years ago. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision to invest and expand, he has relocated to a brand new and highly impressive showroom in Lake Oswego which will be celebrating its Grand Opening this Spring! It was Granite Transformations’ unique process that attracted Dan to the business. Most kitchens and bathrooms are functionally sound, but over the years have just become outdated. As a result,

simply “transforming” them versus demolishing and starting from scratch makes perfect sense. Granite Transformations’ proprietary makeover methods are highly efficient, and by using recycled materials whenever possible they’re also environmentally friendly. Countertops, cabinets, sinks, backsplashes; they do it all, and everything is engineered in the US and fabricated locally. They do these “makeovers” provided there are no structural changes needed to the building itself. They refresh, customize, and reconfigure cabinetry, countertops, and entire kitchens and bathrooms within your existing walls without extensive demolition. Dan explained, they are make-up artists, not plastic surgeons! If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen or bath, call Granite Transformations first! Let them schedule a free design session to show you the amazing transformations they can provide. Their products are top-notch, require little-to-no maintenance, and come with a lifetime, transferable warranty. Why would you even need to consider anyone else? Granite Transformations is located at 9 Centerpointe Dr. Suite B in Lake Oswego. Give them a call at 503-498-9389.
