We are super excited to present to you our first issue of 2022, which is jam packed with tons of things to see, do, and buy. Here is a quick glimpse of what we have inside this issue: Featured on our cover is Canby’s very own Siren Song Bar. A great place in town to hang out in a relaxing atmosphere with good company, great food, and amazing drinks. Calling all Dads & Daughters! The Rotary Club of Canby is finally getting to put on their Daddy-Daughter Dance. The Dance was originally scheduled for March 14th, 2020 – you can probably figure out why that did not happen. We have all the details inside but hurry, tickets are going fast, don’t miss out. For all of you Valentine’s Day fans out there, we have some great stories inside for your reading pleasure. If you have ever wondered who invented the Valentine’s Day candies with little words printed on them, or what movies to watch, or even the history of Valentine’s Day, we’ve got you covered! What a bummer! But Odd Moe’s in Canby has the perfect solution. It’s one of the rare restaurants in Canby that delivers drinks right to your door.! And when you call in to make your order, choosing from any number of delicious choices on the menu, Austin James Russell will be on the other end making sure everything is delivered to you the way you requested. A.J. is an energetic 24 year-old entrepreneur who opened the Canby franchise of Odd Moe’s Pizza in February 2021. Prior to that, he worked in Salem for six years with the founders of Odd Moe’s Pizza, Mike Sublett, and his business partner, Sam Wibowo. While A.J. started out on delivery, he worked his way up to supervisor, assistant manager, and then became a manager. When I asked what inspired him to start his own franchise in the early stages of his career, A.J. said that even though his childhood dream was to run and own an ice cream truck, he discovered when he joined Odd Moe’s that he was determined and motivated to not return to his ten-year reunion still working as a “pizza boy.” That’s why today, as the owner of the Canby franchise, he takes great pride in owning a local business devoted to his community. Not only does Odd Moe’s offer the personal touch of being locally owned, their beer sales support cancer research, which 10 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
is incredible. Ever since Odd Moe’s founder Mike Sublett lost his mother and sister to cancer, supporting cancer research has been an integral part of his life and Odd Moe’s philosophy. For example, they offer a rotating variety of beers that are handcrafted and brewed on their own private label, made right here in Oregon, and currently offered in two special varieties: Odd Moe’s Citrus IPA, “The Pink Can,” which supports breast cancer, and Odd Moe’s Hazy IPA, “The Yellow Can,” which supports bone cancer. Along with those conveniences, what makes the menu so special is both the quality of ingredients used as well as the quantity of toppings served. As A.J. puts it: “Everything is fresh. And local. No skimping here.” Let’s dive into their gorgeous pizza, which they call a “Northwest Style.” They offer a classic Combo (Lineman), Garlic Veggie (Reggie), Hawaiian, (The Sweet Spot), Garlic Combo (Power Forward), Classic Veggie (The Borg), All Meat (Grand Salami), Taco Style (The Big Juan), Garlic Chicken (The Mascot), BBQ Chicken (The Bull Rider), Greek Style (Jimmy the Greek), Artichoke Pesto (Green Monster), and Vegan (The Natural). The Lineman, for example, is topped with salami, pepperoni, fresh mushrooms, red onions, black olives, green peppers, Italian sausage, ground beef & mozzarella cheese with red sauce. Equally delicious is The Sweet Spot, which is topped with Hawaiian extra Canadian bacon, extra pineapple, extra cheese, and breakfast bacon with red sauce. Candy Hearts:
A History Of A Sweet Treat

N
ecco wafers, candy hearts, Sweethearts, conversation hearts. The candy goes by many names, with silly messages and a chalky consistency. The notorious candy hearts have a strange history that involves a pharmacy and America’s first candy machine. Our story begins in 1847, with a pharmacist named Oliver Chase, who invented a machine to produce lozenges. Back then, apothecary lozenges were popular for sore throats and other illnesses. But 175 years ago, the process to make a lozenge was labor-intensive: pulverizing medicine and sugar paste by hand with a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, then rolling and cutting out little discs. Considered the first candy machine, Oliver invented a lozenge cutter to simplify the process, and smartly shifted from making medicine to making candy, founding Chase and Company, which later became New England Confectionery Company, or Necco! Here’s where the story gets really interesting! Legend tells us that Union soldiers during the Civil War carried Necco wafers, known as “hub wafers,” and Oliver Chase might have been inspired by the love letters
these soldiers carried. Historians suggest instead that Daniel Chase, Oliver’s brother, was inspired by the growing popularity of Esther Howland’s Valentine Day cards which began selling in the mid-1800s. A third and more likely explanation is the oddly named cockle, a popular candy shaped like a scallop seashell which contained a “motto” printed on a thin roll of paper. Daniel cleverly improved upon this design to print the messages directly onto candy, by using a felt roller pad wetted with red vegetable coloring. However, Daniel’s “conversation candies” or “motto lozenges” weren’t heart-shaped until later in 1902. Up until that time, their candy was sold in a simple disc shape, but eventually were sold in shapes like baseballs, watches, and horseshoes. The candy hearts were hugely successful, and over the next 100 years other smaller companies began selling similar candies. In 1990, Necco acquired Stark Candy Company and became the “leading manufacturer in conversation hearts.” Today, the company claims to manufacture nearly 100,000 pounds of Sweethearts every day from midFebruary through January and approximately 8 billion candy hearts each year. But what is a candy heart exactly? Necco offers classic Sweethearts, as well as chocolate, sugar-free, “dazzled,” and “color your own” varieties. According to their website: “Manufacturers combine sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, f lavors, gums and colors into a mixing machine to create a dough, which then goes into a machine that presses it flat, stamps it with sayings and cuts it into hearts. After 30 minutes in a “drying tunnel,” the six different heart flavors are mixed together and packaged.” Surprisingly, they’re not made out of chalk! Daniel Chase’s original printed lozenges were larger and therefore included longer phrases, like “HOW LONG SHALL I HAVE TO WAIT? PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE.” There were also weddingthemed sayings, such as “MARRIED IN WHITE, YOU HAVE CHOSEN RIGHT.” Previous sayings like the timeless “FAX ME” and “GROOVY” have been discontinued. “BE MINE” and “KISS ME” you may be more familiar with. Whatever your feelings on candy hearts, they’re a fun and fascinating little piece of American history.

Energy is finite, too, both physical and mental. We can only stay on task for so long before our focus and enthusiasm wanes, especially when the demand for performance is great. Despite all of this, making time for downtime is at odds with many people’s work ethic, which views it as weakness or wasted time. In most arenas, rewards still accrue to those who push themselves the hardest, but that doesn’t mean they’re always the most productive. It’s also worth noting that how well you renew yourself matters more for performance than how long. That is, the more rapidly and deeply you can learn to rest your mind and body, the more restored you can feel in less time.

O
scar Wilde famously opined that life imitates art far more than art imitates life.
Local business owner Matt Morrissey and chef Justin Rouse, of the new upscale cocktail bar Siren Song – much like the Greek sailors in the myth that inspired the watering hole’s name – saw a need that wasn’t currently being filled in downtown Canby and answered the call. Undoubtedly, the ending is a lot happier in this version. “You walk around these streets, and we’re like, ‘You know what? There’s no classic cocktail bar,’” says Rouse, who previously collaborated with Morrissey on their wildly popular upscale sandwich shop and wine bar in Canby, Wayward Sandwiches. “‘We could do that.’ And that’s sort of how it all happened.” The new bar – which is open only to guests 21 and older – specializes in old-school cocktails made with fresh, highquality ingredients and crafted the old-fashioned way. Morrissey said some guests have already remarked how their Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour tastes different than what they expected (in a good way), and that’s because the flavors come from fruit and other real ingredients – not out of a bottle.
“We wanted to make really nice, fundamental cocktails, and that’s what we do,” Morrissey explains. “We make our sours with egg whites; all of our juices are fresh. Lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit – all of that gets squeezed fresh right here. We don’t bring in any of that stuff. A lot of the different syrups, we’re making ourselves, and that really shows up at the end. There’s no substitute for fresh.” In building their inventory of spirits, Morrissey and Rouse intentionally sought to bring a quality and variety – in terms of taste, region and style – that wasn’t readily available in the local area. “We wanted to have an upscale liquor collection,” Morrissey says. “That’s something that we really didn’t have around here. We wanted to have some really excellent bourbon and scotch and rye, as well as gin and vodka – all the different spirits. We wanted to have a nice selection for people to choose from and try something new.” Siren Song has drawn rave reviews for its cocktails, which are made in the traditional style, with the freshest and most high-quality ingredients. While its most popular blends are also the most familiar – namely the Whiskey Sour and Old Fashioned, a top seller – the menu also encourages sampling from a number of drinks you may have never heard of. “We have a handful of Prohibition-era, speakeasy cocktails that folks may not have had before,” Morrissey says. “Drinks like the Sazerac or The Last Word. Some of those drinks may sound weird, and they have ingredients like absinthe or chartreuse, but they’re really delicious. And I think if you’re willing to branch out a little bit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

That same sentiment holds true for the bar’s highly ambitious food menu, which offers a variety of pub food and other traditional favorites that not only pair spectacularly with strong beverages – they’ve also never touched a deep fryer.

That includes its popular chicken wings and jalapeno poppers – both of which are roasted in a convection oven rather than boiled in hot grease.
“Those have both been a huge hit,” Morrissey says. “People have been going crazy for them. They’re truly decadent bar food. The food here is really by far the most ambitious menu,” Morrissey says. “I don’t know anybody else that’s doing fresh oysters and schweinshaxe and scallops and all of the other things that we’re doing here. It’s kind of elevated comfort food.” For those of you wondering the obvious question – what the heck is a schweinshaxe? – I’ll allow Morrissey to explain. “It’s a pork shank, with a German-style preparation where you keep the skin on this enormous hunk of meat,” Morrissey says. “And it’s just
unbelievably delicious. What we’re really aiming for is food that’s elevated, but at the same time accessible, great to share with people. We’re finding that there is a market for that here. The food’s been really wellreceived. Folks have been really pleasantly surprised.”
That includes one of the bar’s biggest specialties: raw oysters, served on the half shell, which can be ordered at any time of day, but perhaps are best enjoyed during the oyster and champagne happy hours – available daily. “Oysters and champagne – they’re amazing together,” Morrissey says. “Those are a hit for sure, and something that I think people haven’t really experienced. We’re shucking them to order, so the time from getting harvested to when they’re being served to you is literally a matter of hours. Based on Jane Austen’s romantic novel published in 1813, there are many film versions of P&P but this is the best one, in my honest opinion, and I’ve seen a lot of them! This is a romance drama starring the electric Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, alongside such brilliant actors as Donald Sutherland and Judi Dench, and many other familiar English faces. What stands out most is the quick wit and ratatat dialog, not just between men and women, but among everyone in high Victorian society in the English countryside. This is a movie of side glances and subtext, wry smiles and melodrama. What really ties this together is a masterly, whimsical score by Dario Marianelli that’s guaranteed to make your heart swell.
Adam Sandler has starred in a curious number of romantic comedies which are surprisingly good, and this is no exception. This movie co-stars the lovely and hilarious Drew Barrymore, who has a rare condition of anterograde (short term) amnesia following a car accident. The comedy and yearning ensue when Henry (Sandler) and Lucy (Barrymore) fall in love over and over, and Henry’s attempts become i ncreasi ng ly more involved and sentimental in an attempt to cause her to remember him. Also starring Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Blake Clark, and Dan Aykroyd, this movie is as sweet and sappy as it is hilarious and downright absurd.

A wry adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew, this film follows a sprawling 90s cast with the likes of beau-hunk Heath Ledger, starlet Julia Stiles, and quick-witted Joseph-Gordon Levitt. The plot, if you’ve never read the play, is a convoluted tangle that is best explained as a series of romantic bets on unlikely love, not dissimilar to a number of plates spinning simultaneously as the audience holds its breath and fights back laughter. But especially, the film involves Heath Ledger trying to “tame the shrew,” or stubborn woman, Julia Stiles. It’s teenage love, rebellion against parents’ wishes, and high school drama, which makes for a fascinating and impossible potpourri of comedy, romance, and drama. In this teen romantic comedy, shy high school junior Lara Jean has her unsent love letters unknowingly sent out to her crushes by her younger sister. What follows is as equally nerve-wracking as it is adorable and sweet, as she begins down a complex journey of conf licted feelings and love and heartbreak. hen you first considered investing, it probably seemed like a good idea to focus on what worked best for you from the beginning. If stocks from a particular company brought you high yields, why not double up on your investment? The answer is diversification. It may seem counterintuitive, but it is a fundamental aspect of risk management and plays a critical role in building an investment portfolio.
Overall, your general appetite for risk determines how best to diversify your investments.
Effective diversification requires more than just purchasing random investments. Otherwise, your investment may all move in the same direction in both up and down markets. Instead, investors might want to consider selecting securities that do not all move in correlation to each other. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission advises investors to diversify by asset category and within asset categories.
DIVERSIFY BY ASSET CATEGORIES Asset allocation is the practice of dividing up your investment capital among different asset categories. This covers three main asset classes: stocks, bonds, and cash. Some financial advisors consider this separate from diversification. Even so, the fundamental principle is the same and can be used in tandem with company-specific or industry-specific diversification. While asset allocation may help to manage market risk, it does not provide a guarantee against market losses. It seeks to provide a cushion against market volatility.

The First Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance Should Be ‘A Magical Evening’

M
ore than two years in the making, the Daddy Daughter-Dance is an evening of music and magic for the young and young at heart, and is planned for Saturday, March 12 at the Ackerman Center in Canby.
Hosted and organized by the Rotary Club of Canby, the inaugural event was originally planned for March 2020 – the same fateful week in which the first wave of large gatherings were canceled in the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now almost exactly two years later, the dance has been placed back on the calendar as a symbol of hope and a signal that the long-awaited return to normalcy is on the horizon. It’s hard to overstate how much the world has changed from March 2020, when the Daddy-Daughter Dance was originally planned to take place. From then until now, one thing that has not changed is the need for such an event, as Rotary President Ray Keen explains. “The Daddy-Daughter Dance is coming back online at a time that I think is really critical for relationships that are core in our community,” Keen says. “After everything that’s happened the past two years, I think one thing that is really needed are opportunities for fathers and daughters – and other meaningful relations – to come together and connect.” 34 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
In the wake of the pandemic, many adults and kids are finding themselves drowning in screen time, Keen says, whether that is a product of remote work, school, or simply an increased desire for escapism. “Either we use that to disconnect or we use it to reset,” he says. “Or we feel like, ‘Hey, I need to stay informed about the next thing that’s happening.’ With all of that taking place, I think our relationships can really be impacted by that. So it’s important that we find time to do things together that are relational beyond just sort of being in the same room together, but actually having a meaningful experience together.” “The simple act of stepping outside one’s comfort zone can be very meaningful and significant to an impressionable child or loved one,” Keen explains. “Many dads out there, like myself, are terrible dancers,” he says with a chuckle. “But I think that’s one of the best things that we can do with a young daughter is step into a space where I’m not an expert. I don’t have all this figured out. But I do know that I want to make a night that is special for her. Creating meaningful experiences and memories is something that I think we’ve all learned the past couple years is so important. ” While Keen and the other organizers see the event as meaningful and important – they also think
and expect that it will be a ton of fun. The evening’s agenda includes arts and crafts, snacks and refreshments, a chocolate fountain, a professional magic show, and other surprises. “Our desire is to see dads and daughters come together for what we think will be a really magical evening,” Keen says. “There will be special treats and magical surprises, so it should be a fantastic time.”

he beauty of design within the home has always been a passion of mine. Almost 2 years ago I had the amazing opportunity to start working at McLarens Carpet One Floor & Home. From new homes of small carpet projects to remodeling the entire home, I have learned the joy that comes from transforming a space that my clients long to spend time in. I strive to help my clients throughout the process in the simplest Kali Lucas way possible to result in a home that will be enjoyed for years to come. I am excited to continue my education in Interior Design at George Fox University next fall, so I can expand my knowledge of building beautiful interior spaces. One thing that captivates me about the design of the home, is the power the simplest changes make to a space. AVOIDING PROBATE (without a trust) M any people believe that they should do everything possible to avoid probate. While the cure (avoiding probate) is sometimes worse than the disease, avoiding probate can be simple and very beneficial. In Oregon, there are several tools that can be used to avoid probate, including joint ownership, contract or beneficiary designations, and transfer on death deeds.
JOINT OWNERSHIP
If you own a bank account or a brokerage account as “joint owners with right of survivorship,” or real property as “tenants by the entirety,” or with some other form of survivorship, when you die the surviving owner or owners will become the new owners without the need to go through probate. Normally the bank or brokerage only requires a death certificate in order to acknowledge the new ownership. Once established, joint ownership can be difficult to “un-do” or to change without the consent of all of the joint owners. Also, joint owners actually own the asset and can often use it, spend it, or transfer it without the consent of the other joint owners.
BY CONTRACT / BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION
Nearly a decade ago, the Oregon Legislature recognized “transfer on death deeds.” (ORS 93.948 et seq.) A transfer on death deed essentially lists one or more beneficiaries for your real property upon your death. Similar to the foregoing, while the “transfer” to the beneficiaries happens automatically, in order to document the new ownership, a death certificate will need to be recorded in the real property records of the county. Like many budding young musicians, Engerman got his start in school — albeit at a younger age than most. “I started with the violin at the age of 5,” Engerman said. Engerman grew up in the tiny Two Rivers Farm School, a private institution and non-profit in Aurora, in which students are required to learn to play one of three instruments: violin, harp, or cello.
Brian Haines after graduation when he was looking for work, and the two clicked. Engerman joined the team in May 2021 and teaches violin, guitar, piano, drums, and ukulele. Szenasi also started her music career in school, albeit in a very different region of the orchestra. Her first instrument was trumpet in the seventh grade at Baker Prairie Middle School. While she enjoys performing as part of a band or ensemble, she has come to find teaching is one of her biggest passions, which makes her a particularly good fit at Canby Music. “I feel like this is just the perfect place for me,” she said. “I love it here so much. Being able to teach kids music is just exactly where I feel the most at home.” Szenasi teaches trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, saxophone, flute, clarinet, and piano.
He later joined the wind and jazz ensemble at Molalla High School, and discovered the guitar through his kung fu instructor at the Balance & Harmony yoga studio in Canby, who also taught guitar.

describe our shop as “Retro with a Mid-Century vibe.” But what does that mean? Vintage is universally accepted as anything 25+ years (Me!) and antique as 100+ years (!). In America, mid-century is generally accepted as encompassing the mid-1940s through the mid-1960s; a period when design became casual, optimistic, and carefree amidst postWWII mass-production. It was meant to be affordable to a new suburban lifestyle. Some indicators that a furniture piece is midcentury are their clean geometric lines, organic curves, and function over form. Natural wood furniture with legs; they are accented with color by
how you adorn them. They mix easily with pieces you may inherit from your great-aunt or your favorite late-summer garage sale treasure. Here at Retro Revival, our definition of vintage extends into the 1970s and are creeping into the 1980s. What I look for are items with a useful life left in them; colorful pieces that pop out against natural surfaces of the average home; and picks that are a bit quirky, and may elicit a smile. And I love to rehab pieces that have great bones but might be a little shabby on the surface. We work hard to find things that are an affordable price – as mid-century was originally intended to be. utsforth’s Market prides itself on being an oldfashioned, locally owned, family-run full-service grocery store, where employees know their customers by name and serve them with a smile. But perhaps nowhere does this hold more true than in the Cutsforth’s café, the on-site espresso stand and coffee shop that also happens to be the store’s smallest department.
The coffee shop offers a full range of all of our favorite espresso, iced and blended drinks, as well as refreshing alternative choices like flavored energy drinks. One of the café’s major advantages is having access to the full inventory of a major grocery store – especially when it comes to blended and specially flavored energy drinks.
“Right now, there’s only four of us,” manager Megan Bussey says with a laugh. “But we’re all pretty close. It’s awesome. It feels more like a family than coworkers, you know? We’re all good friends and know each other, so everything flows really nicely. Being able to have fun at work can help the job go a lot smoother.”
“That’s one of the things that’s really cool,” Bussey explains. “Because we work in Cutsforth’s, we can literally use anything in the store, mix it with any flavor – blend it if you want, ice it if you want – unlike a coffee stand, which might have only one brand or a really limited selection of flavors. That’s one of the coolest things that we can do here.”
The coffee crew feels the same way about their customers, which range from first-timers looking for a quick pick-me-up in the midst of a busy day to regulars who stop by every morning to visit with neighbors and hear the latest local news. “We have a really awesome group that comes in pretty consistently,” says Bussey. “We have a morning group plus some groups that come in every Friday. We kind of know everybody, which makes it a lot easier. We know them and know their drinks. It’s an awesome community. We try to take care of them and they take care of us.” Being a small crew, it can be hard to break into. Bussey learned that firsthand. Her Cutsforth’s career actually started a couple counters away – at the nearby deli. “It’s not far but it’s kind of hard to get over here,” she chuckles. “But I really wanted to since I started, so I kind of waited patiently until there was an opening. I’ve never left since because it’s so fun.”
For the traditionalists, one of the café’s specialties is the everpopular Spanish mocha. “It has cinnamon and almond flavoring, so it’s a little bit more of a spicy blend,” she offers. “We can do it hot or iced. The white chocolate mochas are also ver popular. Lots of people enjoy those.” Like other departments, Cutsforth’s encourages its baristas to exercise their culinary creativity, which has led to some spectacular results, including the Thin Mint, a mint chocolate blended delight so named because, well, “it tastes exactly like the Girl Scout cookie,” according to Bussey. “We do a lot of stuff like that where we come up with our own recipes and flavors,” she says. “That’s the nice thing about not being a Starbucks or someplace corporate. We’re allowed to mix up the recipes and do any kind of custom orders.” The baristas aim to make each drink to their customers’ unique tastes and exact specifications – even if it doesn’t always make sense to them. “I have one regular who orders her mocha ‘chunky,’” Bussy says. “Which basically means you don’t mix it all the way. We just pour the milk in and stab it a couple of times.” For the health-conscious consumer, the café offers a wide range of milk alternatives, including oat, almond, macadamia and soy. Canby Rotary Responds to Community Challenges
S
omeone has to step-up. Cancer patients face serious illness and at the same time must travel some distance for treatment. The Carol Danielson Suzuki Cancer Center at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center will bring worldclass cancer care miles closer to patients in Clackamas County. The Rotary Club of Canby and its members hosted a dinner and auction with the theme “Island Escape” in November to raise funds for the cancer center and other community projects such as scholarships for local students, Canby Kiwanis Christmas food and toy drive, Backpack Buddies, and Reading Rotarians books for local elementary school students. Net donations total about $64,000 from the generous dinner attendees. Providence Willamette Falls Medical Foundation is raising funds for the Carol D. Suzuki Cancer Center, and the Foundation matched contributions made from Canby Rotary. The Rotary’s $20,000 donation was matched dollar for dollar so the total impact from the fundraiser is $40,000 toward the $3 million Bridges to Hope Campaign. The campaign has topped 90% of its fundraising goal. Canby Kiwanis and Rotary have been partners along with other community organizations and businesses for many years when it comes to providing help to local families at Christmas.
This year more than 960 children received gifts and about 370 families received gift cards to purchase food in the weeks before Christmas. This and other community service projects are why people feel Canby is the kind of place where everyone matters and neighbors are willing to help neighbors.
Community service focused on youth is important to Canby Rotary and is central to the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” which means unselfish volunteer service.

ROTARIANS: PEOPLE OF ACTION Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.
C
anby Rotarians support local economic health and community development by raising funds and providing volunteer labor for projects in the area. The Christmas snowman display constructed by Rotarians Rodger and Patti Busse is just a recent example of being part of community efforts to sustain and improve the downtown business district. The project was organized by Hot Rod Dreamworks and Collision Repair which is owned by Rotarians Jack and Ruth Brito. A vibrant business community is essential for the longterm sustainability of Canby. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is the source of matching grant funds for local and international Rotary supported projects. The Rotary Club of Canby is fortunate to have club members who share both their time to plan and implement projects and their dollars through gifts to The Rotary Foundation. These gifts are returned to the local Rotary Club as matching grants for a wide variety of projects. Rotarian John Zieg led a fundraiser in November which raised $1,000 in donations for the Foundation
supported by 37 members having fun and making a difference. The matching funds returned will support Backpack Buddies and Reading Rotarians among other projects. Food insecurity has been very challenging for families in Canby this past year. A community project called “Rotary Bucks” raised more than $2,500 in December. These emergency funds are distributed by community partner The Canby Center as vouchers for purchase of food at Cutsforth’s Marketplace. Cutsforth’s is a long-time supporter of the Canby community through its financial donations and special events that bring the people together while addressing community challenges. Community service is central to the Rotary motto Service Above Self which mean unselfish volunteer service.

Daddy Daughter Dance 2022 Family relationships have been both more strained and more important than at any other time in my life. Adults have found these days to be confusing, frustrating, and discouraging and children have had to navigate relationships with parents with these heightened emotions! As life returns to a rapid pace, it is so important that we capture the moments we have together. Relationships between children and their parents are so vital to healthy homes and a healthy community. That’s why we are making a special time for the connection between fathers and daughters. The Rotary Club of Canby is hosting the Daddy Daughter Dance on Saturday March 12th at 6pm at Ackerman Center in Canby. All are welcome to this evening with special treats, magical surprises, and wonderful moments for a Daddy and Daughter(s) to share! THE COMMANDANT

Facing the prospect of a draft in the wake of the Korean War, Colonel Alfred Burton “Burt” Aus opted to join the Oregon Army National Guard at the suggestion of a high school buddy. Thus began a colorful and rewarding career that would span 35 years of his life. Aus made his mark early on, building a reputation as a dependable, trustworthy leader who took his work seriously. After enlisting for five and a half years, Aus took a commission to join a company based in Oregon City. He fulfilled a lot of different roles and assignments over the years, and he found his commanding officers would typically turn to him when they had a difficult or important job they needed done right. “I was the youngest member of the company for several years, but when something came up that was a problem, it was Burt answering the call,” he says with a chuckle. “A lot of things came my way that had not been in my job description originally.” In 1977, Aus had the honor of being named commandant of the Oregon Military Academy and its officer candidate program. Unfortunately, the academy was not performing well — in fact, it was in the bottom 10 of the 52 schools in the nation’s Guard system — and Aus’s new post had a bit of a reputation as a dumping ground for problematic lieutenant colonels. “It was my cup of tea,” he says, “and in six months, I had it in one of the top four in the nation.” All it took was a little leadership, Aus believes. “Army principles teach that when you take command, you don’t disturb things for 90 days,” he says, adding
with a chuckle: “I didn’t last 24 hours. We went back to doing things by the book.” But if you’re starting to get the idea that Colonel Aus was your stereotypical rigid and unapproachable drill sergeant, perish the thought. “It didn’t strike me until after I retired, but I was never addressed by senior officers by my rank: Major Aus, Captain Aus, Lieutenant Aus,” he remembers. “It was always ‘Burt.’ I think that was a compliment to my perceived abilities.” Aus had the good fortune that, despite serving 35 years in the military, including during the entirety of the Vietnam War, he never once heard a shot fired in anger. One of the biggest blunders the nation’s military leaders made in Vietnam, Aus believes, was relying on the draft rather than activating Guard units like his. “I do think Vietnam would have finished sooner and much differently had the Guard gotten involved,” he says. “Because we were trained, and we were ready.” Nevertheless, he’s proud of his service and military career. “I’m very proud of my service,” he says. “I’m proud of what it gave me. I’m proud of what, in theory, I gave it. I’m a service-oriented person, and I’m very proud to have been able to serve the citizens of the country.”

With Sturdy Whipped Cream Frosting

INGREDIENTS
1/3 C Vegetable Oil 3 Egg Whites 8 Drops Red Food Coloring 2 Drops Raspberry Candy Oil
CUPCAKES: 1 Package White Cake Mix 1 ¼ C Water
FROSTING: 1 (8 Oz) Package Cream Cheese, Softened ½ C White Sugar
1 t Vanilla Extract ½ t Almond Extract 2 C Heavy Cream
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. Line a standard muffin tin with paper cupcake liners. 2. Beat the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and egg whites together on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium for 2 minutes, until smooth. Fill cupcake liners 1/3 full with white batter; set aside. 3. Stir 4 drops of red food coloring into the remaining bowl of batter to make the batter pink. Stir in the raspberry oil. Pour 1/3 of pink batter into a resealable plastic bag and set aside. 4. Mix more food coloring into the remaining bowl of pink batter until it is an orange/red color and pour the batter into a resealable plastic bag. Cut a corner off the bag, stick the open tip into the center of each cup of white batter and squeeze in about two tablespoons of red batter. 5. Cut the corner off the bag with the pink batter, stick the open tip into the center of the red batter and squeeze about 1 tablespoon pink batter into each cup. 6. Bake the layered cupcakes in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool completely before frosting. 7. For the frosting, combine cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract and almond extract in a large mixing bowl, mix until smooth, then slowly pour in the heavy cream. BELLA SHORT By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
When Class of 2022 Canby High School Senior Bella Short first started rowing, a scholarship offer was the furthest thing from her mind. For one thing, she was only in seventh grade. For another and more important reason, rowing had been suggested to her as a part of her recovery and rehabilitation from a severe concussion she suffered while playing for the Canby Rebels softball team.
Once she started rowing, she never stopped. After taking rowing camps between her seventh and eighthgrade years, Short committed to a rowing team.
Short had been a three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and softball, but the injury forced her to relearn the most basic of activities, including reading, walking and talking. Her doctors had encouraged her toward any form of physical activity — as long as it was non-contact.
“Rowing became the avenue for me to feeling normal again and giving me hope that I could overcome the brain injury,” Short says. “There is a deep connection that happens when I feel the water under the boat and as I move the oar through the water.”
She was inspired to try her hand at sculling after her mother started reading aloud from The Boys in the Boat, a nonfiction story of the American Olympic rowing team’s triumph in Nazi Germany, while she was still in the hospital.
Short’s love for the sport has translated into stunning results. In 2019, Short took home first-place honors in the Northwest Youth Regional Club Championship in Vancouver Lake, Washington, which led to her representing the Northwest Region team in the US Rowing Youth Regional Challenge in Florida. After COVID-19 cancellations in 2020, Short came back hungry from competition. On Sunday, November 21, Bella competed in a 5K race around Mission Bay in the San Diego Fall Classic, where her team of eight girls placed 11th. She also took home an Oregon State Championship at the 2021 edition of the Northwest Youth Regional Club Championship, once again held in Vancouver Lake. Short’s laundr y list of rowing accomplishments eventually led to scholarship offers. The Canby Senior was a sought-after prospect and received offers from top schools such as Rutgers, Washington State, Fordham, and Cornell. But after receiving a handwritten Christmas note from Michigan State assistant coach Egan Berne and a campus trip in 2020, she knew she was destined to be a Spartan.

When I went the first weekend of June to MSU, I met the all-female coaching staff and they were awesome,” says Short. “I couldn’t picture myself going to school anywhere else.” Short, who also plans to major in chemistry at Michigan State, credits her family with helping her accomplish her dream of college rowing. “Before I got my driver’s license, my mom would drive me to practice downtown 50 miles roundtrip every day,” Short says. “My parents attend and support me at every regatta.”
After traveling with her family and team to compete in Wisconsin, Florida, and California, Bella’s next goal is for an Olympic appearance in 2028. What started as a rehab exercise has transformed her life. Once a girl who needed help walking and talking, now Bella Short is a “rower who loves talking about rowing,” a soon-tobe college athlete, and a potential Olympian. And if her awards and accomplishments are anything, she’s a darn good rower, too.

alentine’s Day incites cliché images of roses, cartoon Cupids, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, and mushy romantic comedies. While these days we harmlessly celebrate with candy, expensive jewelry, and candle-lit dinners, interestingly the origin of the holiday isn’t as cute or marketable as you would think. As far as we know, the history of Valentine’s Day dates back hundreds of years to pagan rituals in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire to greeting cards in the 19th century. In ancient Rome, when Emperor Claudius II decided single men made better soldiers than married men, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, a priest, realized how unjust this was of the Emperor, so in defiance of the Emperor he performed marriages in secret. Eventually his rebellion was discovered by authorities and he was sadly executed, later recognized as a martyr and St. Valentine. The life of a saint, am I right? As the story goes, he left his daughter a note signed “Your Valentine.”
The modern holiday is celebrated on the same day every year, February 14th (so don’t forget!), but the ancient Romans and Greeks had celebrations this time of year even before St. Valentine. Unlike Valentine’s Day, however, the Roman holiday Lupercalia was a bloody, violent, and (ahem) sexual celebration full of animal sacrifice and random matchmaking and coupling in the hopes of warding off evil spirits and infertility. The Festival of the Arcadian Lykaia, held on February 15th in ancient Greece, celebrated the god Pan’s founding of his temple, a day when the city was cleansed of evil spirits and people’s souls were purified, bringing health and fertility. As often happened when ma ny paga n fest iva ls were renamed, in 496 AD Pope Gelasius outlawed the pagan festival of “Lupercalian” and renamed it The Feast of Saint Valentine, to be celebrated on the fourteenth of February. Fast forward to the late 15th c e n t u r y, w h e n t h e w o r d “Valentine” was used to describe a lover in poems and songs of the day, such as this translated line by French poet Charles d’Orléans: “I’m already wearied by love, my very sweet Valentine.” Later in the 1840s, Esther A. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” sold the first massproduced valentines in America, elaborate creations with lace, ribbons, and colorful pictures. Her early valentines pioneered the commercial tradition of buying and gifting fancy cards to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. According to current data, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Over the centuries, Valentine’s Day has been a religious celebration, a ritual full of violence and warding off evil spirits, health and fertility, and now a sappy commercial holiday. The mysterious and complex origins of this holiday allows the meaning of Valentine’s Day to be truly whatever you want it to be. You can skip the celebrations completely, buy yourself some chocolate, wine and f lowers, and find a good romantic comedy to watch with pizza. Or you can express your love (and platonic love!) and appreciation for the people in your life, whether they’re spouses, family, or friends. Some of us love Valentine’s Day, and some of us love to hate it. If you’re wondering what to do on Valentine’s Day, just know that there are no rules: It’s a new era, and you can celebrate the day of love however you want, even if it’s just through self-love.

Upon Jeanie’s return, her sister introduced her to a relatively new but burgeoning company by the name of Jackson Pacific, where she still works today (although she technically retired in 2017). Jackson Pacific is known around the world for producing beautiful custom brass ornaments…the kind you might find at many tourist attractions while on vacation! I
t’s safe to assume that most of us have done a little traveling at some point in our lives, if just around the state of Oregon. Often our travels include landmarks like the picturesque Oregon coast or majestic Crater Lake, or perhaps a quirky tourist attraction like The Oregon Vortex and House of Mystery! Inevitably, with eyes full of wonder, many of us simply refuse to leave without a souvenir to commemorate our experience, but did you ever wonder where those souvenirs might have come from? Let me introduce you to Jeanie Clarke. Born in South America and raised in New York, Jeanie came from an artistic family. Her father was a painter, and several other relatives on her father’s side designed Hallmark cards, so Jeanie was exposed to the arts from an early age and was encouraged to develop her own style and form of creative outlet. In grade school, art was her favorite field of study, but she’s always had a practical side as well. The plight of the tortured starving artist did not appeal to her, and so she earned a much more marketable degree in Graphic Arts from Monterey Peninsula College in California. Her decision paid off when she got hired almost immediately as a graphic artist for MacMillan McGraw-Hill, a company which produces textbooks. She worked as a graphic artist there for almost a decade before moving back to Portland, where she had lived previously.

CANBY’S ROLE IN FILM & TELEVISION

ioneers, happy couples, and laughing families walked quickly into the basement of Canby Christian Church on that unseasonably warm October night in 1998. And there they stayed, reading, playing cards, talking, and thumbing hand-held video games, waiting for the call to set — and maybe, just maybe, their big Hollywood break.
The 200 extras were there to fill in background scenes for the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie Night Ride Home, starring Keith Carradine, Rebecca De Mornay, Ellen Burstyn, and Thora Birch of Hocus Pocus and American Beauty fame.
Night Ride Home, which also prominently featured Wait Park and its iconic gazebo for a founders’ day picnic, transformed Canby into a fictional town called Elks Springs. The production was led by Wilsonville-based McGee Street Productions Inc. and aired on CBS and other stations starting in February 1999. A Portland-based agency called Extras Only supplied the talent for the shoot, starting with a list of more than 2,000 names and slowly whittling it down to the best-suited. Those who made the cut included 75-year-old Aloha resident Richard Eiden Sr., an experienced extra who had gotten into the business just a few years before when he heard movie companies were looking for older men.
The film, which tells the story of a family grappling with the tragic loss of their son, was one of many major movie, television and commercial productions that have been staged in the Canby area over the years. In this piece, we will look at just a few of them.

“I’m retired, and it’s something to do,” Eiden told The Oregonian. “I usually sit around and work crossword puzzles, and I can’t stand sitting around. You try to get in on the action whenever you can. You never know how much will end up on the cutting room floor.” Eiden earned a grand total of $50 for every eight hours worked on the set, according to the paper.

The film’s producers staged a full-on carnival at Wait Park to set the scene, including vendors selling kettle corn, cotton candy, fresh fruit, and espresso. The extras, many of whom were dressed as pioneers to set the stage for the founders’ day parade, spent two days roaming around on cue, dancing in the shade of the gazebo — looking as though they were having a great time.
One of the most well-known and iconic projects in the Canby area was not actually a film but a commercial. In 1986, advertisers for the Burger King fast food franchise came to the Canby area to shoot a television ad centered around — among other locales — the “Gribble Barn” located on Highway 170 about five miles south of Canby.
63 year-old Portland resident Carole Hansen was another veteran of the extra circuit who had rubbed shoulders with a number of stars, from Kevin Dobson to Sylvester Stallone. She told The Oregonian she likes to watch the movies she works in to see whether she made the final film. Hansen and her husband, Al, once worked on a 10-minute scene for two weeks, but it was cut. “It’s long hours, but it’s fun hours,” Hansen said. “Sometimes you’re in; sometimes you’re out. After all, it’s supposed to be background.” Julie Lord, a 36-year-old real estate agent and part-time waitress from Molalla, said the movie’s stars were approachable, with Carradine, DeMornay, Birch, and Jordan Brower appearing on set for most of the two days of shooting. Extras were able to stay on the set between shoots as long as they were quiet.
The project, led by Mark Coppos Films in Los Angeles, and the McCann-Erickson advertising agency based in New York, involved painting a massive 30-foot-tall logo for the fictional crop-dusting outfit “Double A Flying Service” on the side of the century-old barn, which was owned by Iola Bowers. Another farm on Highway 170, owned by Lester and Myra Nelson, also featured prominently in the shoot. More than 25 film crew members descended on the area to execute the commercial, which was intended to promote the hamburger chain’s double burger. Everything had to be done in pairs: two trucks traveling down a highway side-by-side; shirtless twin boys scampering around the Nelson farm armed with double burgers; a young couple walking down a country road with the giant “Double A Flying Service” logo in the background. became an iconic symbol of Canby for many years, until the Gribble Barn was sadly torn down in 2017.
Frank DeSantis, a Portland graphic artist, designed the logo of the old, weathered barn sign and two other Portland sign painters, Benn Schonman and Peter McKearnan, spent more than 60 hours bringing the logo to life on the east-facing sidewall of the historic structure. DeSantis applied the oil-based paint in thin, dry layers to achieve the intended look.
Another made-for-TV movie, Fatal Exposure, filmed scenes at a Canby-area farm in 1990, and a national TV commercial for Dodge automobiles was staged at the Canby Ferry in 1987. But the project that finally landed Canby on the Oregon Film Trail just last year was Eco Park’s appearance in 2014 on the popular NBC fantasy police procedural series Grimm.

Its season 3 episode “Synchronicity,” which aired in April 2014, featured a number of locales from the park, which stood in for a European forest in the modern-day fairy tale adaptation. The Canby Economic Development Department assisted the production’s crew to identify locations and provide access to other needed accommodations like parking to store trailers, equipment, and crew facilities.
