Mrs. S. Soper oversaw telephone switching with her daughter and assistant, Miss Rena Hutchinson, until she retired in 1922 after more than 16 years of service. She was succeeded by Zella Hardsey and her daughters, Mabel and Sylvia, who earned a combined $1,800 per year. DirectLink moved from the company’s original Canby location on A Street on the north side of the railroad to a new office on Second Avenue in 1920. The purchase was organized a year earlier by Franz Kraxberger, but delays in acquiring the needed supplies put the move on hold. The move to the new office was spearheaded by longtime lineman Russell Scramlin with assistance from Grover Harris. They installed a new 100-line switchboard and changed the lines without discontinuing service. The new switch was suited to serve even more members as the co-op continued to grow. The company calls the same space on SE Second Avenue home today.

Daddy-Daughter Time

Making memories at annual Rotary Club of Canby dance

By the time you get this magazine in the mail, we will be counting down to the final weeks before the third annual Daddy Daughter Dance, an annual event by the Rotary Club of Canby. Since last August, a team of very dedicated Canby Rotarians have been meeting every month to go through all the planning that it takes to put on an event of this magnitude.

Last year, there were more than 400 dads and daughters who participated. I have had the pleasure of being able to bring my daughter to the dance for the last two years in a row. I must say, as a dad, the event let me connect with my daughter in ways I will never forget.

family. Sometimes, I’m so focused on doing what it takes to provide that I don’t take enough time to stop and “smell the roses” with the ones I love. This dance allows me to push all of that aside and make it just about me and my daughter. We both have had great experiences and are looking forward to doing it again this year. Although she is well on her way to being all grown up, she is and always will be Daddy’s little girl. This year’s DaddyDaughter Dance happens March 16, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Ackerman Center in Canby. Tickets are available at canbyrotary.com.

As a father, my natural instincts are to protect and to provide for my

Exercise should be consistent all 12 months of the year.

January and February are when I see the highest usage here at ClubFit, with March and summertime decreasing in usage & then a slow increase again in the fall. So what is this pattern all about? The weather? School? Vacations and fun? All of the above! Get the kids involved. Get outside and ride bikes, hike and play in the great outdoors, even if spring break is at home.

WALK, WALK, WALK!

Here we go again, but I believe in this, and the whole family can participate! Find a trail, a path, take the kids, bikes and the dog. We love Champoeg Park! At the end of the trail is the old Butteville store and guess what

they have… homemade ice cream! You’ll feel good about that treat when you’ve exercised your way there.

Be prepared. Meal plan! It’s tempting when on vacation to eat the wrong thing.

Pack along your own food and plan ahead what snacks you’ll have available to keep everyone going.

Allowing yourself to get too hungry is a sure way to grab and eat the wrong thing. Keep alcohol to a minimum, too!

Relax during vacation! Allow your mind to rejuvenate by slowing down and getting a little extra sleep. Your body will thank you. Stay hydrated and eat your greens.

Staying hydrated and eating healthy vegetables… even on vacation!

St. Paddy’s Day Party and Casino Night

Event promotes building community resources

During non-emergency times, the Multipurpose Building will serve the community year-round as an event center for reunions, weddings, baby showers and the like. Partitions can divide the climate-controlled space into three rooms, allowing for multiple events to be hosted simultaneously. Trade shows, festivals, concerts and more will have a spacious venue from which to operate. “It gives us a great place to bring more local events to the town,” Trina explains.

Fundraising has never been more fun! Beginning at 6 p.m. March 16, as the event commences, Possibly Irish — a Salem band known for high-energy, foot-stomping tunes — will kick things off. Wild Bill’s Casino will have games going until close with prizes for the top winners, and 2 Guys and A Grill will be cooking up some special Irish dishes to tantalize the taste buds. All proceeds from the night will go to the Clackamas County Fair Improvement Foundation. Any individual donations collected will go directly to the Multipurpose Building fund and are tax deductible.

Come Irish, come all! Join your neighbors and friends on Saturday, March 16 for a fun-filled St. Paddy’s Day Party and Casino Night. Hosted onsite by the Clackamas County Fair Improvement Foundation, everyone 21 years and over are invited to attend. Cards, music, dancing, green beer and Irish pub fare are featured among the evening’s festivities. Don’t miss out! Tickets for this one-of-a-kind fundraising event can be purchased in advance on the Clackamas County Fair website or at the Clackamas County Event Center office. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Any excuse for a party, right? While you’re having a good time, kicking up your heels, placing your luckiest bet or simply mingling with your neighbors, you’ll be helping to build a brand-new multipurpose building for the Clackamas County Event Center. Replacing the old barn torn down in 2014, the new building will serve as a state-of-the-art evacuation site and resource center for the county. “It will be a great place to house people and their animals if they need to evacuate their homes,” says Trina Smith, special events manager for the event center.

“We just want people to come and have a good time and enjoy the party,” Trina says. So, wear your green, bring your green, and show up for a night of fun and of good cheer. The best-dressed person will win two tickets to the Canby Brewfest in May.

Tax deductible donations are accepted online, by mailed check or in person at the Clackamas County Event Center office: 694 N.E. 4th Ave. Canby, OR 97013. Checks should be made out to Clackamas County Fair Improvement Foundation. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

For details and tickets, visit clackamascountyfair.com and scroll down to St. Paddy’s Day Event. For inquiries call (503) 2661136 or email catrinas@ccfairevents.com. More on the Multipurpose Building can be found on the website under “New Construction.”

Navy Veteran Gary Lisman is a man to be admired and respected for his service. He humbly admits to feeling unworthy of praise considering that his time was spent inhabiting a more supportive role on shore. Over the years, however, he has come to finally understand the significance of such roles. Hailing from a Norwegian seafaring family, Gary jokes that he is a salty old sea captain at heart. He simply never had the opportunity to leave shore!

He joined the Navy in 1964 with the intention of traveling the world. He attended bootcamp in San Diego and was then sent to Electronics Technician School at Treasure Island in San Francisco for a 40 week program. After graduating, Gary was transferred to the Naval Communications Station back in San Diego. He assumed, hoped he would be assigned to some sort of exotic port of call overseas, but the Navy had other ideas. Instead of hitting the open seas, he was sent to Cryptologic Technician School in Vallejo, California.

Cryptologic Technician School was an exciting time for Gary since the work he was doing was

challenging, interesting, and highly classified. The position required that he help keep hundreds of extremely critical and extremely sensitive crypto machines running, but there were no opportunities to leave California. Ironically, he never would. While so many people view time served in the military as time away from home and loved ones, Gary viewed it as an opportunity for adventure. When, upon graduation, Gary was stationed back at San Diego as an onshore Cryptologic Technician, he was forced to concede he would never sail the open seas with the Navy.

Gary was honorably discharged in

1967. While it was initially difficult for him to reconcile his expectations with his actual experience in the military, he eventually came to recognize the importance of such supportive roles. He now feels a sense of pride about his accomplishments, not to mention, of course, the fact that he served his country. Gary credits the Navy with helping him to straighten out his life, find a sense of purpose, and garner the discipline necessary to find success in pursuing a career in Hollywood.

Casual Dining in the Countryside

Family-friendly dining just a short drive from Canby

Unique! Phenomenal! That’s Langdon’s Grill. This familyfriendly restaurant is situated within the beautiful 175acre golf course of Langdon Farms. Located just south of Wilsonville, the rural farm-themed setting is a rare find so close to a major metropolitan area. The restaurant features made-to-order American-style cuisine reminiscent of some of your favorite home-cooked meals. Offering a full-service bar and amazing views from both the patio and the dining area, Langdon’s Grill presents a culinary experience like no other.

Sitting on a property that was once a working farm, you can’t miss the Red Barn Clubhouse, which is home to Langdon’s Grill, Bar and Restaurant. The inside seating area is host to a wall of windows which overlook the 18th fairway and a lovely man-made lake. One of the property’s original existing barns can also be seen from the restaurant. In addition to the steady clientele of golfers,

dine-in customers come from miles around to enjoy quality casual dining and the country atmosphere offered at Langdon’s Grill. As spring approaches, and in particular when everything is in bloom, General Manager David Stead notes that “you’ll really be looking over a beautiful space, and it’s much more quaint and quiet than other local-area restaurants.” Unlike the familiar business park setting which often sits on a busy main street, Langdon’s Grill is a venue set inside a peaceful and serene golf course. “That’s what sets us apart,” expresses David. “That’s what makes us unique.”

As for the restaurant fare itself, Langdon’s Grill has dedicated many years to developing and promoting its quality casual dining. The chef, Pancho, is a 20-year veteran of Langdon Farms who learned his trade “on the job.” His knowledge and

TASTE OF THE TOWN LANGDON’S GRILL AT LANGDON FARMS 30 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

experience complement the venue’s style perfectly. Sharing his expertise with the cook staff, they serve up such favorites as Langdon’s Grill’s phenomenal California Chicken Sandwich, the Friday Special Prime Rib Steak, Prime Rib Dips, and Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches, as well as Langdon’s Grill’s own Cajun Chicken Mac-and-Cheese. Surprisingly, the most popular dish is the Teriyaki Plate. Patrons see it coming from the kitchen and can’t help but remark how delicious it looks. In addition, a wide variety of “deliciousness” is included throughout the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. The full breakfast menu is available Saturdays and Sundays, and a Happy Hour menu is offered seven days a week. Friday and Saturday evenings also have live jazz added to the menu.

The qualities of a venue such as Langdon’s Grill are sure to foster a

unique company culture. “Down home, fun, loose but respectful,” are all accolades David Stead attributes to the Langdon’s Grill culture. “We treat you like you’re a part of our family, welcome you into our home with a smile, and call you by name whenever possible.” This culture extends into the community as Langdon Farms Golf Club hosts numerous private events

and fundraisers, and in turn, Langdon’s Grill provides all the catering for these special events. Actively supporting around 150 charity-related golf events each year, General Manager David Stead relates, “charity is certainly a core aspect of what we do here.” Only minutes from home, come and experience Langdon’s Grill’s beautiful and unique farmthemed setting in the midst of this spectacular rural property. “We want you to feel like you’re dining at home on your family farm,” says David, “only we’ll do all the work.”

Essential Requirements for Executing a Will

Recently, we discussed the reason everyone should complete an estate plan (please see the article from the January 2024 Advantage Magazine). But what are the requirements for executing a Will?

Legal Capacity and Age

A person must have “legal capacity” in order to execute a Will. According to Oregon statute (ORS 112.225), a person must be at least 18 years of age (or be lawfully married or emancipated) AND be of sound mind. While the age/marriage requirement is fairly objective, the requirements for a “sound mind” can be a bit more subjective. This analysis includes an understanding of what property you own, who your family is, and how you are proposing to dispose of your property upon death. It can also include an analysis of whether you are under any undue influence by others, fraud, or duress.

Clear Intentions and Instructions

A Will serves as a roadmap for how your estate will be managed and distributed after your death and who you want to implement your wishes. To ensure clarity and prevent misunderstandings or disputes among beneficiaries, it’s crucial to articulate your intentions and instructions clearly within the Will. This includes identifying specific beneficiaries, detailing the distribution of assets, and addressing any unique circumstances or wishes you may have.

Formal Execution and Witnesses

In Oregon, a Will must be in writing - video Wills or recorded Wills are not generally acceptable. Further, to help ensure that a Will is recognized by the Oregon courts, a Will should be executed in a formal manner. That is, it should be signed by the “testator” and attested by two witnesses. These witnesses should either “witness” the testator signing the Will or hear the testator acknowledge the testator’s signature.

Review and Revision

Life is dynamic and circumstances can change unexpectedly. As such, it’s essential to review and, if necessary, update your Will regularly to reflect any significant life events or changes in your wishes. Whether you experience marriage, divorce, the birth of children, or the acquisition of substantial assets, these events warrant a reevaluation of your Will to ensure it remains aligned with your current circumstances and objectives.

Legal Assistance and Expertise

While it’s possible to draft a Will independently using templates or online resources, seeking professional legal assistance is highly recommended, particularly for more complex estates. An experienced estate planning attorney can offer valuable guidance, navigate the intricacies of state law, and help tailor your Will to address your specific needs and goals. Investing in expert advice can provide peace of mind and minimize the risk of errors or oversights that could invalidate your Will or lead to unintended consequences.

Executing a Will is an important aspect of responsible estate planning that transcends age and life stage. By understanding and adhering to the basic requirements outlined above, individuals of all backgrounds can take proactive steps to safeguard their legacy, protect their loved ones, and ensure their wishes are honored according to their intentions.

Generations of Bounty

Historic family farm committed to community

Back in 1948, in the aftermath of World War II, John Liepold was recovering from pneumonia in a Canadian hospital when he met a redheaded nurse named Elsa. After falling madly in love, they married and moved to Oregon. Quickly discovering that berries grew well in the Pacific Northwest, they bought a property in Boring with vineyard vistas and Mt. Hood in the background and were soon blessed with a robust crop and three beautiful children.

Generations of Liepolds have graced the abundant berry fields since it all began in 1952, with John’s son Rodney and Marcia, his wife, taking over in 1988 and expanding the farm almost threefold in acreage. Their children, Jeff and Michelle, stepped in around 2016 and fully transitioned the farm to certified organic. These days, about ten family members work on the farm, including Jeff, his wife Jen, Michelle, her husband Paul, cousins Brandon, Nicholas, Zack, and Abby, and of course, Grandma and Grandpa!

Liepold Farms cultivates delicious varieties of organic strawberries, raspberries, marionberries, blackberries, boysenberries, blackcaps, and blueberries, all with a very high brix content, measuring fruit maturity and level of sweetness. “We make fruit spreads with our berries versus jam because the natural sugar content is so high,” explains Michelle Liepold. “To be considered a jam, the FDA requires 55 percent sugar content. Our fruit spread has the consistency of a berry mash and only 22 percent sugar, so perfect for diabetics and maintaining a healthy weight.”

Liepold berries can be found at the farmers market, at their seasonal berry stand, in the produce section at New Seasons and even on the menu at Burgerville. Some crops are made into supplements and pharmaceuticals, like the blackcap raspberries commonly used in colorectal cancer treatment.

1998 was a challenging year for the farm, and out of desperation to make ends meet, the Liepolds started one of the first agritourism sites in the area. Autumn now brings a colorful bounty of squash, pumpkins, gourds and all the best seasonal vegetables. The Fall Festival is still one of the best and features a large selection of specialty pumpkins, a corn maze, and scavenger hunts.

Visitors can walk about the 250-acre farm enjoying tasty treats like caramel corn, hand-dipped caramel apples and apple-spiced donuts, or feast on hot barbecue sandwiches with homemade pickles and macaroni salad. Don’t forget to say hello to their friendly herd of goats as they clown around on their play structures! In the summer, the berry stand is open seven days a week and slings fresh parfaits and shortcakes on the weekends. Other seasonal events include Daffodil Weekend and a Mother’s Day Brunch.

“Being right next door to Portland, we see a lot of innercity families,” says Michelle. “Teaching kids to be aware of

FARM FOCUS LIEPOLD FARMS 38 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111

their neighbors and community helps them understand how they fit in, especially when it comes to the environment.” That includes a yearly educational theme for the corn maze and scavenger hunt. “We welcome visitors, not just in the fall, to come see how we grow things.”

Liepold Farms is proud to introduce two exciting new attractions this year! In 2020, the family acquired property adjacent to their land, known historically as Maple Shade Farm, which belonged to the original Boring family.

After spending several years beautifying the grounds and restoring old buildings, they are welcoming guests this March.

The eight-bedroom house they call Maple Shade Estate has been converted into an Airbnb with private rooms and access to a gym, a library, an indoor pickleball court, an outdoor pool, cozy fire pits, and fresh made breakfast from the farm.

One of the barns on the new property houses the Black Barn Tasting Room where guests can sip hard ciders, enjoy small plate appetizers, and sample fresh berries and fruit spread. “It’s got a dark and moody vibe, and the decor is made of old farm tools,” shares Michelle. “I turned a hay rake into a chandelier and used components from an old hazelnut rack to decorate the walls. It’s a nod to my Grandpa John and celebrating our history here.”

The Liepolds can’t wait to host you and your family on the farm this year! For tasting room hours and future event details, visit liepoldfarms.com.

Liepold Farms’ Berry Stand is located at 14480 SE Richey Rd, Boring, Oregon, 97009. Please call ahead for availability 503-663-5880.

Tax Season Planning

MAXIMIZE YOUR IRA CONTRIBUTIONS

While profits and losses for 2023 have already been booked, did you know you may still be able to reduce your tax bill for 2023 by making an IRA contribution? Whether it is fully deductible may be determined by whether your employer provides its own retirement plan.

You have until April 15, 2024, to contribute to your traditional or Roth IRA and have it count as a 2023 contribution. Though we at Better Planning & Investing recommend saving as a monthly habit, you may have been holding onto extra cash this past year as inflation created uncertainty.

The IRA contribution limits for 2023 are $6,500 for those under age 50 and $7,500 for those 50 and older.

SPOUSAL IRA CONTRIBUTION LIMITS

Are you wondering who can contribute to a spousal IRA? Under current law, most couples can contribute up to $13,000 ($6,500 each) to their IRAs for 2023, as long as their combined compensation is at least $13,000 for the year in which contributions are made. This is a great way to get more money into a tax deferred or tax-free investment account without both spouses having to have earned income. Once again, these contribution for 2023 can be made up to the date of this years filing deadline of April 15th, 2024.

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR A TAX-FREE RETIREMENT

If you are investing for 20 years or more (including retirement years) you are almost certain to benefit from Roth IRAs. Roths are funded with after tax dollars but provide both tax free

compound growth and also tax free withdrawals. Another bonus is that they are not subject to the required minimum distributions (RMDs). This gives you more control in how you spend down your assets in retirement.

If you want to contribute to a Roth IRA for your spouse (or yourself), there are income limits. For 2023, a married couple who file a joint tax return and have a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of up to $230,000 can contribute the full amount to each of their Roth IRAs.

ROTHS FOR UPPER INCOME EARNERS

Even though there are income limits on Roth contributions, there aren’t any limits on Roth conversions. You can earn as much as you want and still convert a traditional IRA to a Roth. Surprisingly, there are investment advisors who do not make use of this simple method to grow tax free money for their clients.

A backdoor Roth IRA is a retirement savings strategy whereby you make a contribution to a traditional IRA, which anyone is allowed to do, and then immediately convert the account to a Roth IRA.

If you make a nondeductible traditional IRA contribution or if you immediately convert the account after making a traditional IRA contribution, there generally won’t be any taxes due on the conversion.

Always check with your tax professional before making tax decisions. Consulting with a CPA in coordination with a Certified Financial Planner® may allow help ensure you have the best possible tax planning.

CANBY FIRE DISTRICT

VEHICLE FIRE SAFETY

U.S. FIRE ADMINSTRATION OFFERS LIFE-SAVING TIPS

It’s important to act quickly if a vehicle catches fire.

Burning vehicles can quickly trap occupants. Mechanical and electrical issues, along with crashes, are common causes of vehicle fires.

If your vehicle catches fire

• Pull over as quickly as you can when it is safe.

• Once you have stopped, turn off the engine.

• Get everyone out of the vehicle. Never return to a burning vehicle. Do not fight the fire yourself.

• If you think there is a fire under the hood or trunk, do not open it. This could cause the fire to grow.

• Move everyone at least 100 feet from the burning vehicle and well away from traffic.

• Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Electric Vehicle

Fire Safety

Many residents in your community have purchased or are thinking about buying an electric vehicle (EV) but may be unaware of the risk of fire or electric shock injury related to charging EVs.

Before buying an EV, have a qualified electrician install:

• A new, dedicated circuit for your EV charging device. Older home wiring may not be suitable for use with EV supply equipment.

• Level II charging devices (if that is your preferred charging method).

Charging EVs:

• Follow manufacturer’s guidelines when charging your vehicle. Check with your local dealer if you need additional information.

• Purchase a charging device that is certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

• Plug Level I EV chargers directly into an outlet designed to handle the amperage of the charging device. Never use a multiplug adapter or extension cord.

• Install a residual current device with the charging unit. It will turn off the power if a fault is detected.

To prevent a vehicle fire

• Have your vehicle serviced regularly by a trained mechanic.

• Keep gas cans or propane tanks away from passengers. Tightly seal and place them on a flat surface to make sure they stay upright.

• Keep windows open to stop fumes from building up if you must put gas cans or propane tanks inside your vehicle.

• Drive safely to avoid an accident.

• Place all charging device components out of reach of children when not in use.

Discover if a lash lift is right for you

Lash lifts have been getting more and more mainstream as spas add the service to their menus. What is it? Lash lifting is the process of getting your own natural lashes curled up like you would with a lash curler, but instead using a solution that keeps them curled for up to 12 weeks!

The great thing about a lash lift, well, it’s your own lashes. So you can rub and wash your eyes, and even wear mascara if you’d like. Some lash lifts even strengthen lashes and include a black tint, so you end up with stronger curled black lashes for up to a couple months. Sound like heaven yet? Not all lash lifts are created equal so best to do some research before getting one done.

about an eight- to 10-week cycle. To keep your lash lift lasting the longest possible, use an eyelash growth serum like Revitalash or Latisse, which artificially extends your lash cycle length, which in turn extends the length of your lift. Who shouldn’t get a lash lift?

My pick is the YUMI lash lift, pronounced “you me.” This lift is different than the rest because of the quality of the ingredients used. The formula for the YUMI lash lift originates from Paris, France, where standards are stricter for ingredients. This curling solution does not contain formaldehyde or ammonia like some of the other lash products on the market in the U.S. This is important when we are talking about getting really close to the eye area. The lash lift also has a strengthening keratin step to strengthen and nourish lashes, and also includes a black lash tint.

How long will your lash lift last?

If you have very short natural lashes, a lift will not give you the best results. Also, people with naturally very curly hair may not like the results from getting a lash lift. Unless your practitioner is very experienced, these curly-haired clients can end up with lashes that are too curled.

How long does an appointment take?

Typically, a lash lift appointment is an hour. Price of the service really ranges from the product used and experience of the practitioner. Lash lifts usually range from $65 to $175.

Precautions before getting the service

If you wear contacts, you’ll be asked to take them out during the service, but you’ll be able to put them back in once it’s complete. You’ll also be asked to not get your lashes wet for 24 to 48 hours, depending on the product used. This ensures your lash lift is secure and will give you curled lashes for as long as possible.

Well, that depends on your natural lash length. The lash lift curl will last as long as your natural lash cycle. Shorter lashes have about a four- to six-week lash cycle and longer lashes have

If curled and strengthened dark lashes have been on your beauty wish list, a lash lift might be the treatment for you!

Do you know St. Patrick?

He wasn’t Irish — born in Britain to a Romanised family, he was kidnapped by slave traders in Britain at age 16 and worked in Ireland on a cattle farm for six years. Only later did he return to Ireland.

His name wasn’t Patrick — ordained Patricus (Latin for “nobleman”), he was born Maewyn Succat.

He did not wear green — but rather blue.

He didn’t banish snakes — archeologists have no evidence that snakes were ever native to Ireland. It’s more likely the snakes are a metaphor for the evil he banished.

He might have popularized the shamrock — the shamrock is claimed to be a symbol for the Holy Trinity, with the three leaves representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

This Technicolor (full color!) Disney movie is a rare gem set in a small Irish village. Darby O’Gill (Albert Sharpe) is fired as caretaker of his leased farm and refuses to tell his daughter Katie (Janet Munro), especially when he’s been replaced by a brawny younger man (Sean Connery). On his way home from the pub, Darby falls into a portal to a secret land of the little people (leprechauns). He meets the leprechaun king, Brian (Jimmy O’Dea), and accidentally brings him home. As Darby has trapped him (that’s the trick), he demands that Brian grant him three wishes, bringing Darby bittersweet and surprising results. Funny, sweet and surprisingly thoughtful, this is great for the whole family. Rated G.

A visually gorgeous and beautifully scored Irish fable, this family movie won a slew of awards and was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year at the Academy Awards. In the wilds of Ireland, Cellach readies his fortress for a Viking raid looming on the horizon. Little does he know, his nephew Brendan rejects the savagery of warfare and instead chooses to hone his skills in the monastery scriptorium. As the Vikings draw near, Aidan, a respected illuminator (artist), seeks Brendan’s aid in a dangerous quest. Starring Evan McGuire, Christen Moone, Brendan Gleeson, Mick Lally, Michael McGrath and others. Great for the whole family. Not rated but essentially PG.

A coming-ofage comedy set in 1990’s Derry, Northern Ireland during the Northern Ireland conflict (The Troubles), this show is utterly hilarious and truly unique. It follows a group of Irish Catholic teens who rebel against everything — their school, parents, the conflict, you name it — leading to hilarious hi-jinks and consequences. They’re also obsessed with the music (featured in the show) and culture of the time, making for a nostalgiadrenched experience. Be warned, it’s full of profane and mature content. Best viewed by older teens and adults. Rated MA (aka R).

Standing Tall

Canby Wrestling pins hopes on Doman

had scored 16 pins heading into the Tournament of Champions.

“He’s really unique because he’s really tall,” Harms said. “He uses his leverage really well but he’s also able to wrestle like a little guy. He’s fleet footed so he can do lower leg attacks and he’s pretty successful at it, which you don’t see in a lot of big guys. He’s unusually talented.”

Jackson Doman is not your average looking high school wrestler. At 6 foot 5, 205 pounds, the fleet-footed athlete stands tall on the mats, where he has become a dominating force for the Canby Cougars this year.

He may look more at home playing tight end for the Canby football team, which he does in the fall. But the two-sport star has learned to use his size, quickness and speed to his advantage in taking down wrestling opponents.

“He’s pretty dominant,” Canby Wrestling Coach Brandon Harms said. “He’s pinned most everyone he’s faced.”

With a 31–0 record through January, Doman is the only Cougar still undefeated midway through the season. He recently won the Reser’s Tournament of Champions 215-pound class title by defeating the defending state 5-A champion.

“It was a tough match,” Doman said of the 5–1 decision over Cole Langdon of Dallas. “He’s a really big super-strong guy. I just used my length and my technique just enough and got the W.”

The majority of Doman’s victories this year have been pins. In fact, he

Harms has high hopes for Doman in the state championship tournament. “He should definitely be in contention for the state title,” Harms said. “I absolutely think he has a chance to win it all.”

Last year, Doman took second place in the district and sixth in the state tournament. This year, he is confident he will win the state title. “I’ve pinned almost all of my opponents,” Doman said. “I think I will win the state championship.”

Growing up in a large Mormon family of nine, with six siblings, not to mention cousins and other relatives, there was no lack of family and friends for backyard football and other games. Jackson isn’t the first (and likely won’t be the last) Doman to go through Canby High sports programs.

“Ever since I was little, I’ve been super competitive with the whole family,” Jackson said. “The Domans are pretty decent at sports, and athletic cousins and friends played backyard football and wrestled around.”

Spending summers doing hard work on the family farm and strong support from his family have played as much a part in Jackson’s success as talent. Doman credits his father, Scott Doman, for teaching him one of his best moves on the mat. He calls it the underhook.

“Since I’m wrestling bigger guys, 215-pounders and I’m not quite 215 yet, I’m quicker on my feet and I can take low shots, quick shots and catch them off guard.” Doman said. “Also I use my underhook to almost lift them off the mat and then set them down. It’s actually a pretty good move.”

His exceptional exploits on the football field have already grabbed the attention of recruiters. After attending a camp in Utah, he was offered a football scholarship from Brigham Young University, but wants to weigh all his options before making a decision when the time comes.

Football is Doman’s No. 1 sport. Last year, he had seven touchdown receptions and played on both sides of the ball — tight end/ wide receiver on offense and outside linebacker on defense. He said he is looking forward to playing his senior year with quarterback Kellen Oliver.

“He’s a hard worker and a good guy,”

Doman said. “I love to throw with him. I’m excited for this year to hopefully put up some good yards and some points and go far in the playoffs.”

Doman said he thanks all his friends and family who have pushed him to try to improve as an athlete. “Thank you to everyone who pushed me to be better, my dad especially,” Doman said. “He’s always been there and just tried to help me get better.”

Harms said the whole Doman family deserves credit for their support of Jackson and his work ethic. “He works hard,” Harms said. “The whole family helps him prepare so he’s always got a workout partner at home. He’s not just contained to the mat room when it comes to getting better.”

“I try to take leadership and encourage people because wrestling is such a hard mind game,” Doman said.

The Luck of the Irish

rish culture — a blend of folklore, superstition, and Catholic beliefs — is known for their lucky symbols like shamrocks, leprechauns, and horseshoes. But the phrase ‘the luck of the Irish’ wasn’t actually about good luck — originally it was bad luck! This was due, according to Elizabeth Stack, Executive Director of the Irish American Heritage Museum, to the high fatalities of Irish laborers during the gold rush. A big reason for these modern lucky symbols is due to Irish immigration into the U.S., as the Irish brought symbols of their culture as a means of comfort in a strange new land. And of course, like storytelling, the symbols changed over time. These days, the luck of the Irish is legendary and their symbols are popular worldwide.

Shamrock vs. Four-Leaf Clover

You may not know this (I didn’t!), but shamrocks are not the same as four-leaf clovers. Shamrocks actually have three leaves, grow in clumps, and come in green, purple, or white. Clovers grow alone and usually don’t have four leaves, so four leaf clovers, as we know, are extremely rare. The shamrock is the true Irish symbol of luck, as St. Patrick used the shamrock, which has three leaves, to describe the Holy Trinity. Yet, for some reason, perhaps due to its rarity, the four-leaf clover took over as the more popular symbol.

Leprechaun

The leprechaun, which we know from pop culture, may be rooted in the Irish belief of fairies, who supposedly live among us but stay hidden with magic. Interestingly, the leprechaun is believed to be one class of fairy among many, not a stand-alone magical creature. The leprechaun, of course, is a widely recognizable symbol, known as the mascot of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Lucky Charms, but especially known are the potential rewards of finding a leprechaun and getting a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There are countless designs for kids’ leprechaun traps online, but they are more for fun and celebration than catching the real magical creature.

Horseshoes

Horseshoes are definitive in Irish culture for many reasons. In folklore, the devil appears at a blacksmith and demands shoes, so the blacksmith nails burning hot shoes to his hooves. The devil walks away in pain and swears to keep away from them forever, thus the idea of horseshoes warding off evil spirits. Additionally, early Western Europeans believed iron was magical and could drive away evil, such as malevolent fairies and witches – which is why witches ride broomsticks, not horses. Then there’s the number of holes in horseshoes, seven, known worldwide as lucky: seven continents, seven colors in the rainbow, seven seas, seven days of the week. And there are two ways you can hang a horseshoe for good luck. Hanging a horseshoe heels up (like a U) keeps the good luck from running out of the shoe and inside the building. And hanging a horseshoe heels down allows good luck to flow down on everyone who walks underneath it. Sometimes people would even bury a horseshoe under the cornerstone of a new building for good luck.

Dan Cable Presents...

Long-running podcast dives into music

Everyone loves music. There isn’t a soul among us who isn’t affected by it to some degree. It lifts our spirits, fills our cups, compels us to move, to rejoice, to laugh, to cry. And for some, that’s enough – to simply allow it to exist, to acknowledge and appreciate its myriad gifts without questioning the inspiration behind it. For others, music possesses an almost mystical quality, an enigmatic draw that compels them to venerate their favorite artists and seek to discover what’s behind the veil. Local podcaster Dan Cable falls into the latter category, and what a gift he has afforded the rest of us.

A music fanatic from an early age, Dan grew up playing in bands, going to concerts, and generally just being a student of the form. When he moved to Portland in 2013 and began meeting some of the circuit regulars in town, he discovered that there was an abundance of talent, but limited access to anything outside the regional market. Bands needed a bigger stage where their voices could be heard, where their stories could be told, and Dan chose to answer the call.

In February of 2016, the first episode of the podcast Dan Cable Presents aired. Initially, he focused on the Portland market. Later, he expanded to include the whole Northwest region and finally our nation’s borders and beyond, but since moving to a weekly format in July of 2016, he has produced one episode per week, every week,

and never missed a single one! Now that he is closing in on 400 episodes, Dan Cable, without question, has become “that voice.” His podcast has become the platform of choice for bands new and old to share their inspirations, to talk shop, and to reveal a little of that magic which would otherwise remain locked in the vault.

And Dan does it like no other. He’s found such a wide audience because he approaches every episode and every band from a position of integrity. This isn’t a job for him, it’s a labor of love. It’s his passion. He is a fan of the music of every band he has on the show, and he has lived with their music for years/months/weeks (depending on how young the band is) before ever conducting an interview. He does his homework! His questions are in-depth, unique, and thought-provoking – what true fans would ask, not the banal standards of a poseur. Dan is the genuine article, and if you’re looking to get the real answers about your favorite bands, there’s no one who does it better.

The success of this thing has altered the trajectory of his life, but he has found his calling. This is exactly where Dan should be, and he couldn’t be happier. If you are even remotely a fan of music and discovering what goes on behind the scenes, check out DanCablePresents. Dan’s intelligence, enthusiasm, and professionalism are unparalleled in the industry. Find him anywhere you stream podcasts: Apple Music, Spotify, etc., or follow him on Instagram @ dancablepresents. He also has a spot on Kink FM every Thursday at 12:30 where he introduces and promotes new Portland acts. He puts out a new playlist of Portland acts on the 1st of every month or you can catch him around town DJing under the moniker “Ernie Moose Johnson.”

Little House on Macksburg

The tale of the Yoder Family log cabin

Coming from California to the rural outskirts of Canby, I was in awe of the log cabin on Macksburg Road. It wasn’t something I’d ever seen in San Jose, California. I had the opportunity to sit down with Alicia Yoder, daughter of Larry and Betty (née Fish) Yoder, the couple who made the unique home a reality.

The Yoder family has lived in Canby for decades and are one of the Yoder families who settled Yoder Road between Molalla and Woodburn. Larry Yoder grew up on the family farm on Needy Road. Alicia’s maternal grandmother is a part of the Smith family who owns the 4-Mile Nursery on Highway 170, which became Century Farm in 1978. The Smith family also owned the notorious “Wolf in the Window” house.

This was not the Yoders first home — the young family had a house on Hamricks Corner in the unincorporated territory of

Yoder. Alicia attended kindergarten in Yoder in the basement of a Mrs. Yoder (unrelated). She attended first and second grade in Rural Dell, third and part of fifth grade in Colton. The family then moved to Hermiston, Oregon, and returned to Canby in 1976 after Alicia’s grandfather passed away. Alicia is a Canby High graduate of 1983.

In the ’70s, the idea bloomed for Larry and Betty to build a log cabin on their 14 acres. They shopped around for a design and decided to go with a home kit from Real Log Homes of Missoula, Montana. The flatbed arrived in early 1977 and the work of sorting the logs and materials began; the logs were lettered and numbered for ease of assembly. With the help of family and friends the construction began. Because the house was such a novelty, people would drive by and stop to lend a hand. Alicia’s grandmother, along with Alicia and sister Tina, would provide perhaps the biggest help by preparing the lunchtime meal for whoever was working that day.

They worked every weekend and evenings when weather and schedules would permit. It took nine months to make the house livable. It was “completed” in December of 1977, if “completed” meant the exterior was done. The interior was still a work in progress. The interior walls were made of mostly blue knotty pine. The ceilings are tongue and groove rough pine; everything was built with a rustic feel. As with any new build, there were obstacles. The county didn’t want to give them a building permit. Real Log Homes helped by providing the requisite information, addressing the

county’s concerns about insulation.

As a teenager, Alicia’s bedroom was her sanctuary, the place where she spent her private time, doing homework and listening to music. Spending time watching TV, learning to cook and hosting family holidays brought a warmth to the drafty interior. The family raised dogs, cats and horses on the property, as well as tended an elaborate garden. They canned and froze everything they needed and opened the garden for picking to other members of the family in the area.

The family still owns the home today. Alicia’s younger sister Tina resides in it now and their father Larry lives in a mobile home on the property. The other house with the legendary “wolf in the window” stayed in the family until a cousin passed away in 2019 and his wife decided to sell. The wolf has since moved across the street and is again haunting Macksburg Road.

The real timber wolf was killed in the upper Molalla mountains by Alicia’s great-great-great grandfather. As a child

she would rarely go up the stairs without her parents or grandparents for fear the giant canine would come back alive to render its revenge! So, if you dare, take a scenic trip down 170 to Macksburg Road

and try to get a glimpse of the lone wolf. If you listen closely you will maybe hear his howls — or maybe it’s just a gust of wind in the old log cabin.

The Canby Historical Society preserves our rich heritage and inspires an appreciation and understanding of Canby area history. Talent, creativity on stage at Spring Festival

Canby High School Theatre proudly recognizes the creative and technical efforts of all its students, and is especially honored to celebrate those who received qualifying scores at the Oregon Thespians Regionals Festival at Sam Barlow High School on Feb. 3. The State Thespians Competition in Salem, April 4-6 at the Convention Center, will further provide students an opportunity to develop and enrich their craft alongside peers from all across Oregon. Regardless of competition status, the State spring event is a performing arts festival and students are encouraged to attend. “It’s just a good opportunity for them to be a part of the theatre world beyond Canby High School,” says CHS Theatre Director Sullivan Mackintosh.

Participating in the State Festival provides theatre students an occasion to attend workshops and performances given by professionals from all over the country and to connect with students around the state who share similar passions. Students can explore college theatre programs, and should they take up studying Performance Arts in college, they might possibly run into some of these very same students again. “I tell the students that if you qualify for State, or are a top scorer, that’s phenomenal and you should be very proud of that,” Sullivan says. “But just the fact that they are taking the initiative to develop their own performance pieces is already an incredible opportunity for them to get feedback from other theatre professionals or educators.”

CHS Theatre troupe participates in the State Festival not as an entire troupe giving a single performance, but as individuals,

partners or small groups of students showcasing their skills, often in state-specific events like the Tech Challenge or the All-State Musical Theatre number. CHS Theatre students who received International Thespian Festival qualifying scores at Regionals were: senior Joel Winnigham, for Experienced Solo Musical Theatre, junior Laney Wakefield for Experienced Solo Musical Theatre and ninth graders Alyssa Driver and Juliette Mellande, for Novice Duet Musical Theatre. Driver and Mellander also qualified as Regional Finalists, as their performance scored in the top 10 percent for their category.

Several CHS Theatre designers also presented their work at Regionals for preliminary feedback and will be presenting their completed work for adjudication at the state festival in April. These designers include: seniors Cadenza Billingslea and M. Torres-Garcia, both for sound, and juniors India Stults for scenic, Rylee Lund for costume and Jacob Totten for lighting.

Watch for Joel Winningham as Narrator, Laney Wakefield as Cinderella, Alyssa Driver as Ensemble and Juliette Mellander

as Rapunzel in CHS’s musical production Into the Woods, presented Feb. 29 and March 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at CHS Richard R. Brown Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Tickets are available at the door. “Into the Woods” also features lighting design by Cadenza Billingslea, sound design by M. Torres-Garcia, scenic design by India Stults and costumes created by a team including Rylee Lund and Jacob Totten. See you there!

A lively dive into St. Patrick’s Day history and traditions

Did you know that the color originally associated with Saint Patrick was blue, and that pubs were closed on the day we celebrate this holiday? Delving into the history of Saint Patrick’s Day and the traditions associated with it provide a glimpse not only into this fascinating holiday but into Irish history as well.

New York University admits that information on the famous saint is scant at best. “We know he was a Roman Citizen, because Britain was Rome then, and then he was enslaved and taken to Ireland, where he either escaped or was released.”

This man, later known as Saint Patrick, became a priest and returned to Ireland where he was instrumental in converting the followers of Druidic culture to Christianity.

As the story goes, St. Patrick’s birth name was Maewyn Succat, but at some point in time, he changed his name to Patricius — a name whose Latin roots are associated with the concept of fatherhood, or a father figure.

Today, shamrocks and green beer are common Saint Patrick Day traditions. In 1631, however, when the Church established March 17th as a feast day honoring St. Patrick, such traditions were non-existent. While the celebration of Saint Patrick dates back to 1631, the man himself was even further removed in history. So who was Saint Patrick and when did he actually live? Marion Casey, a professor of Irish Studies at

It wasn’t until the 18th century that St. Patrick’s Day celebrations began to ramp up and assume the form we associate today with the holiday. As St. Patrick’s Day falls during Lent, it functioned as a day off, so to speak, from the prescribed abstinence leading up to Easter. In fact, the celebrations became so excessive that the Church felt compelled to remind people of the religious significance of the holiday. The symbol it chose to commemorate Saint Patrick was the shamrock. Not only was this clover leaf already ensconced in Irish culture and lore dating back to pre-Christian times, but its classic three-leaf shape directly corresponded to the number three — a number associated with the Holy Trinity. The story went that when Saint Patrick returned to Ireland, he employed the shamrock as a symbol to illustrate the Trinity to the heathen masses he was striving to convert to Christianity.

Throughout the 1700s, St. Patrick’s Day traditions continued to evolve. Despite the fact that the holiday originated in Ireland,

the first St. Patrick’s Day parade actually took place across the Atlantic in New York City in 1762. It wasn’t until the Irish Rebellion of 1798 that the color green was associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Prior to the rebellion, blue was the standard color linked to Ireland, as it was featured in the royal court and also present on the ancient flags of the country. In contrast to the famous red of the British military, the Irish adopted green as their color, proudly singing “The Wearing of the Green” during the war, thus cementing green as the national color of Ireland.

As for the current traditions common to St. Patrick’s Day, one might assume they originated in Ireland. Contrary to popular belief, however, a number of these familiar traditions were born right here in the U.S. One such American invention was green beer which traces back to an Irish-American physician, Dr. Thomas Hayes Curtain, who in 1914 added a drop of blue coloring to beer, turning it green. The coloring utilized by the doctor was referred to as “blue wash,” an iron powder solution with dye intended to brighten up white clothing. Unfortunately, beer at the time contained acetaldehyde, which

not only adversely affected the flavor of the beer, but reacted negatively with the blue wash, making the St. Patrick’s Day imbibers ill. Fortunately, today’s green beer is made with a drop or two of blue or green food coloring and acetaldehyde is no longer an ingredient in beer. While other towns and individuals claim to have invented green beer, historians tend to give Dr. Curtin the nod.

Speaking of turning things green for St. Patrick’s Day, how about an entire river? In 1962 when city workers used dyes to trace the source of illegal sewage dumping in the Chicago River, they applied a St. Patrick’s Day concept. Injecting 100 pounds of green vegetable dye into the river, they were able to turn it green for an entire week. Today, in an effort to be environmentally conscious, only 40 pounds of dye are used, turning the river green for a matter of hours rather than days.

When it comes to food, the typical St. Patrick’s Day classics are corned beef and cabbage: traditional Irish food, right? Not so fast. In truth, traditional St. Patrick’s Day fare in Ireland would have consisted of Irish Stew and soda bread, or perhaps a meal of pork and potatoes, which were less expensive than beef. Food historians suggest that struggling Irish immigrants likely substituted beef and cabbage for pork

and potatoes, which at the time were more expensive.

Another fact that might blow people’s minds today is that until 1970 pubs were closed in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day in observance of its status as a religious holiday. Subsequently, laws were passed to have the pubs open on March 17th, a move which, as you might imagine, was embraced by business owners and promoted heavily. An official campaign by the Irish government was launched in 1995 to spur tourism to the country by marketing St. Patrick’s Day and Irish culture abroad.

Today, St. Patrick’s day is celebrated not only in Ireland, but throughout the world, particularly in North America and Australia. St. Patrick’s Day celebrations take place as far from Ireland as Japan, Singapore and Russia. What began in Ireland as a religious holiday, and later expanded to represent Irish culture and nationalism, was embraced by people around the world as a day to make merry, appreciate Irish traditions, and knock back a pint or two while enjoying corned beef and cabbage, soda bread, and perhaps a hearty bowl of Irish stew. So the next time you’re donning a bit o’ green for St. Paddy’s day, propose a toast not only to old Saint Patrick, but to the rich historical evolution of this fascinating holiday!
