Suddenly, the video quality begins to drop, and her colleagues send her screenshots of her face frozen in a funny position. Let’s take a look. In this household, there’s a battle for bandwidth. The entry level internet speed tier that Jennifer chose is no longer fast enough to support the growing number of devices now competing for bandwidth.
Susie gets home from school and decides to knock out her homework so she can go outside with friends. She connects her school iPad to the home WiFi network and loads up the web pages that she’ll need for her assignment. Some of the work includes watching several YouTube videos on the family smart TV while taking notes on the iPad. Susie plays some music on her smart speaker while she texts her friends that she’ll be done soon. When everything is complete, she’ll upload her work to her teacher’s online submission portal.

What if those shoes are boots with eight-inch platforms? This past month, I had the opportunity to visit the KISS Museum in Las Vegas while on a trip with my wife to visit her sister. In addition to seeing a ton of KISS memorabilia, I had the opportunity to sit in Gene Simmons’ chair at his desk wearing his platform boots from his Destroyer Era costume. Quite the moment for me. I have been a KISS fan since junior high school and have seen them perform in concert 11 times. One of my bucket list goals was to meet every original member of the group. I had the pleasure of meeting both Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons back in 1992 when I worked for Dan Reed—his band, The Dan Reed Network, was signed to the same record label as KISS. The other two members, however, proved to be a bit more challenging to cross their paths. It was not until 2017 when my buddy, Dennis McNabb, and I were finally able to meet Ace Frehley when he played at the Aladdin Theater in Portland. And I was finally able to check the final name off the bucket list this year by taking a quick trip to Nashville to meet the drummer, Peter Criss, at one of his rare meet-and-greet appearances. It feels good to finally be able to say I’ve met them all. Speaking of meeting them all, my wife and I had the pleasure of working with the Rotary Club of Canby to work the blue gate and take tickets for this year’s Clackamas County Fair. Her grandfather was a ticket taker at the Puyallup County Fair, now known as the Washington State Fair, for more than two decades. For us to be able to continue in his footsteps holds special meaning. There’s nothing more fun than seeing all the families and folks coming in with excited smiles and anticipation. Joking with the fairgoers about not eating too many corn dogs or going on too many rides remains a highlight of our summer that we enjoy each year before fall classes start. So until then... “Rock and roll all night, and party every day!”
Responsibly, of course.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” A drama starring Keke Palmer, Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and others, this is based on the true story of grade school students who compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Meant to inspire kids who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to succeed, it goes to show you that talent, skill, and intelligence are independent of where and how you grow up, and that hard work, persistence, and believing in yourself matter most. A good movie for pre-teens and above. Rated PG. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Rated G.
“Sometimes failures lead to better things.” Disney/Pixar’s animated comedy stars a huge cast, including Billy Crystal, John Goodman, John Krasinski (Jim from The Office! ), Helen Mirren, Aubrey Plaza, and more. This prequel to the popular Monsters Inc. is all about dreams and personal failure, and the story of when Mike and Sully attend college to become scarers. Sully, being big and scary, is a natural scarer who doesn’t have to work very hard; contrastingly, Mike, who’s a tiny comedian, has to study very hard to be taken seriously. Ultimately, it teaches the lesson of finding what’s special about you, even when it’s different from what you want and imagined. Funny, heartfelt, and genuinely insightful, this is a great family movie.
POP CULTURE
Kindergarten Cop (1990)
Rated PG-13. Monsters University (2013)
Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.
In this absurd comedy from Ivan Reitman, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays an undercover cop who disguises himself as a kindergarten teacher in our very own Astoria, Oregon. His quest? Find a mother and child in danger. As the principal astutely asks, does he have experience teaching? No, no he does not. But he soon gets the kids into ship shape by taking a police academy approach to their chaos and bringing much needed order to the classroom. It’s wacky, ridiculous, and cheesy, counterbalanced with bad guys, fisticuffs, and gunplay. Not a little kid’s movie, reserve this one for teenagers and older.
“You gonna eat your tots?” This movie exploded on the scene in my junior year of high school and became an instant pop culture success. In a small Idaho town, awkward teenager Napoleon Dynamite (played by Jon Heder) doesn’t fit in. When his grandmother is injured, his weird football-nostalgic Uncle Rico shows up and bullies him. Without reprieve at home or school, Napoleon makes a new friend in Pedro, a melancholic Hispanic boy who mostly speaks Spanish, and the two form a plan to run for class president: Vote For Pedro. Interpersonal drama and quirks galore, Napoleon wanders about looking for friends and purpose, until he finally discovers them in the most unlikely of places. Good for teens and adults. Rated a strong PG.

LUCAS NICKERSON was raised here in Oregon, just up the road and over the hill. Being raised in a simple barn, he was quite fond of animals of all types. He especially loved to draw them (sometimes depicted in hideous, mutated forms), most often to illustrate puns or jokes that he loved. It wasn’t long before he realized that people actually got a laugh out of his doodling. As he grew, he realized that the hamlet of Beavercreek was a little too small for a person with his worldly aims, so he set out on a 4-year epic journey across the world. Much like Bruce Wayne of legend, he sought out the masters of art mediums and traditional techniques in hopes of learning their secrets. After failing and spending his only money on he remained for three long years. He eventually made his way home via an extended stop in Seoul, Korea. It was there that he obtained his much sought-after knowledge and art technique by carefully mimicking a certain master’s every stroke. Upon returning home, he realized that a degree in studio arts would be a nice addition to his accomplishments. He traded a disused kidney and a small package of foreign gum for a document proving his merit. He now resides in Oregon City, a town famed for the creation of the Hacky Sack and all-star U.S.A. baseball pitchers. His wife is lovely and kind, his dogs are well behaved, but his daughter is starting to show unusual tendencies that are much like his own. He has a lot of anxiety about that.

Swan Island Dahlias, the nation’s largest dahlia grower, in full bloom
Established in 1927—with acreage in Portland and on Swan Island, hence the name—the farm was relocated to Canby in 1953. It was purchased by the Gitts family in 1963, and since then has doubled in size and scope. Still owned and operated by the Gitts family to this day, during the blooming season the farm boasts almost 50 acres of the most dazzling, varied, and unique dahlias you’ve ever

We have sometimes felt overwhelmed, gotten caught up in the negatives, and neglected to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life. Quite literally, we have forgotten to stop and smell the flowers. In order to rectify that situation, though, we need look no further than our own backyards. With 370-plus varieties on display, and on average roughly 10 new varieties introduced every year, there’s always something new and exciting to be found. Prior to the pandemic, the farm hosted a six-day dahlia festival every summer, split between two weekends. Since then, they have adapted to our advantage. Now Swan Island Dahlias is open to the public for two full months, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30. It’s free to attend, free to park, and if the stunning, world-class assortment of gorgeous flowers isn’t enough to lure you, then perhaps the adorable gift shop will. If not that, then the food—anywhere from two to six food trucks are on site at all times, the educational classes (art, health and beauty, floral arranging, dahlia care, and more), or the entertainment (live music every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm) certainly will. This is truly the hidden gem of the Willamette Valley. You don’t want to miss it. Three generations have proudly run Swan Island Dahlias.

I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with Heather GittsSchloe, daughter of Nicholas and Linda Gitts (who currently run the farm) whoandgranddaughterandofNickMargaretGitts, initiallypurchased the farm back in 1963. Her passion and love for the farm was evident in every word she spoke. Some of us work to live, but clearly she and her family live to work (on this farm). The gratitude she expressed for being a part of something so sublime and so positive was inspiring, and her sincerest wish was only to share all of this with the community at large.

e have always carried vintage flatware. It’s fun to have some pieces around for special events or to use for crafts. I personally find the act of polishing silverplate to be quite relaxing, although I know I’m probably in the minority. But how do you know if your pieces are silverplate or something else? Almost all flatware is stamped on the back, usually with a maker’s name, some may include the pattern name, and others have only letters and numbers. is almost always marked 925 or sterling and will have a maker’s mark and depending on where it was made, several marks denoting dates and location. If there’s a number such as 800 or 600, those are a version of coin silver - a silver and other metal mix, but uses 80%/60% silver versus the 92.5% sterling silver. is indicated by a word with the word ‘plate’ in it such as Community Plate, or IS in capitals, or quadplate or tripleplate or something along those lines. is usually marked straight up stainless. We carry both silverplate and mid-century stainless flatware of all types at affordable prices. Personally, I think a mismatched set is very fun. Come on in to Retro Revival and pick out your own.

Canby Kids’ main purpose is to provide a healthy, safe, and fun outlet for local kids and families — not to create championship teams at the high school level. But it certainly doesn’t hurt the latter by instilling such values as teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship in local athletes at young ages.
lmost every story about success a Canby High School team or athlete has experienced at the state level is also a story about Canby Kids.

Canby Kids Inc., is the local, independent nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth recreational and competitive team sports opportunities for children in and around the Canby area on a year-round basis.
Founded in 1975, and built up over the years by a number of outstanding community leaders, including Wayne Oliver and Shantel’s father, Bob Rapp, a former mayor and city councilor who was known as Mr. Softball for his lifelong support of that sport, Canby Kids has helped multiple generations fill the gaps that other area institutions and organizations failed to fill.
The Canby Kids Are Alright
Nonprofit provides outdoor recreational programs for local kids
“It’s been a while since I’ve coached, but I always told my kids, ‘It’s not about winning and losing,” says longtime Canby Kids President Shantel Rapp Harney. “It’s about lifelong friendships. It’s about being a good teammate and developing good habits for being an adult.”
You can say that again. Currently, Canby Kids serves more than 1,100 youth athletes across five distinct sports, which all do their own fundraising and are steered by their own volunteer boards: Canby Cougar Football, Canby Junior Baseball, Canby Rebel Softball, Canby United Soccer, and Canby Lacrosse.
It takes over 500 volunteer parents, coaches, and supporters to make things operate smoothly, all working in partnership with

“I was born and raised here in Canby. I was an original Canby kid,” Shantel says with a laugh. “The founders of it, they just saw a need for sports programs in town. It was started to build relationships with the City of Canby and the Canby School District to create places for our kids to play sports. And it works great. We have great relationships with the city and school district, and it’s been very successful.”

Over the years, many teams have won league and even state championships in their respective sports and age brackets.
Being a small, volunteer-run organization, the COVID-19 pandemic hit Canby Kids particularly hard. But its dedicated network of parents, coaches, volunteers, and supporters fought hard to bring youth sports back and keep alive Canby Kids’ remarkable, nearly 50-year-long legacy.
“We’re proud Canby has been able to support sports for as long as we have thanks to the support of the community,” Shantel says. “We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of good folks put in the time over the years to keep it going.” For more information about Canby Kids, visit canby.com/canbykids, email canbykids@canby.com or call 503266-KIDS (5437). “You know, you often don’t know what you have until you don’t have it, and I think we really missed a lot during those years,” Shantel says. “It just showed: Kids need something, whether it be sports, music or dance. Kids need outlets. They need to be able to be kids. I don’t know what I would have done without sports as a kid.”

Cowcohol is a labor of love — took the farmers-turned-distillers more than 12 months to get the formula down. It does seem like their hard work paid off because Cowcohol is one of the creamiest vodkas on the market.... a beautiful satiny finish that will make you believe in moo-ricles.” — Mashed.com
