NICKS & CUTS: MEET THE BARBERS NIKKI My name is Nikki Griesenauer, I am a Wife, Mom & Barber. I take these roles very seriously. I have been cutting hair for more than 10 years & have loved every minute of it. I slowly have built a clientele that includes all ages but kids are some of my favorites. They get to take home a match box car when they are done. I am blunt, straight to the point & I will tell you the truth. I hope you all will make Nicks & Cuts your new hair home!

ROBYN

Hi my name is Robyn Rene Flynn, and I’ve been a barber for about 3 years. You could say I come from a long line of hair stylists. My great grandpa started as a barber in the navy & owned salons throughout Portland. I like being a barber & getting to know different people. A little bit of sarcasm & jokes are on my side. In my spare time I like volunteering my time to help where I can in the community.

CHRIS Hello, my name is Chris B & I’d like to share a few things about myself. First, I’m a father of two boys ages 10 & 9. Everything I do, I do for them. Second, I was in the U.S. Army as an armed crewman on the M1A1 Abrams tank. About two years ago I decided to take a chance on myself & jumped into barber school. After graduating in less than a year I’m now a proud owner/partner of an up & coming shop. Come see the team at our family friendly barbershop.

B’s Bake Shoppe CANBY’S GOT FRESH BREAD BAKING! by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

I

f you’re in downtown Canby and you catch the whiff of some delicious baked goods fresh out of the oven, don’t be surprised. That’s B’s Bake Shoppe you’re smelling, Canby’s new upscale artisan bakery located at The Dahlia next to Canby Gifts. The bakery just opened to the public in late July. Owners Bethany Zito, a professional baker and pastry chef, and her husband David, an experienced sous chef, have worked in the industry for some time, but are firsttime business owners who have built B’s Bake Shoppe from the ground up. “It’s been quite the journey,” Bethany says. “But it’s been good, it’s been fun. There’s been great support.”

that fresh-baked, from-scratch breads and pastries were in demand in the south Portland metro area. “I started out baking breads, then got into pastries and the fancy plates, desserts,” she said. “I’ve been playing around a lot with different flavors.” As the weather turns colder, she plans to focus on her artisan sourdough breads, pretzels and other fresh-baked goods that might be hard to find in the area without a trip into the Portland metro. “There’s a real need for locally baked breads at stores and restaurants here, but sometimes they have to go all the way up to Portland just to get something local-ish,” she said. “So, I’m going to try to feed that market and get a piece of that pie.”

B’s Bake Shoppe is the culmination of a dream Bethany has harbored ever since she started working in the industry at the age of 15. She graduated from the New England Culinary Institute in 2006 and has worked with amazing chefs all around the world, including her most recent stint as pastry chef at The Painted Lady in Newberg. David also started working in professional kitchens at age 16 and has a background in classic French and Italian cuisine.

At B’s Bake Shoppe you’ll find breakfast pastries and other staples, including a rotating menu of freshly baked daily breads, but there’s also a few things that might surprise you. Bethany’s homemade ice cream is an unexpected delight to many patrons, as is a line of what she calls “Big, Fat Candy Bars.” Some of these are her own version of established brands like Almond Joy (they stylize them “Almond Joyy” to avoid any copyright infringement) and others.

While selling baked goods at the Hubbard and Canby Farmers Markets over the last few years, Bethany found

The candy bars have been a big hit since the shop opened this summer, Bethany said, and she is continuing to

develop new flavors. A line of doughnuts is also in the works. Their ever-changing menu of hot sandwiches (David’s speciality) have also been very popular. “It’s been all over the place,” Bethany said, when asked what folks in Canby have seemed to like the most. “It’s like it changes every day. But people do seem to really like the new stuff. Every time we try something new, it goes really fast.”

Occasionally, the name of one of their French or Italian inspired dishes will throw someone for a loop, and Bethany chuckles as she admits she has heard some pretty interesting pronunciations for “focaccia” or “gougère,” but that’s fine with her. “I really want this to be more of a conversation,” she said of her business. “Less transactional... I like learning new things, and I think most other people do, too.”

There’s lots of joy to be found inside the doors of B’s Bake Shoppe. Their tasty offerings are sure to bring a smile to even the grumpiest face, but there is also a sense of joviality that makes even the littlest things enjoyable.

Check out B’s Bake Shoppe at 113 NW 2nd Avenue. For more information you can call them at 503-2662004, visit their website at www.bsbakeshoppe.com, or find them on Facebook and Instagram. ◾

CANBY MUSIC IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MUSIC by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Jess & Jay Photography

A

fter 12 years at its original location on NW 1st Avenue, Canby’s premiere instrument sales, lessons, rental and repair shop, Canby Music, has moved three blocks north, to a location three times the size.

Each of the team members at Canby Music wears a few different hats. Aly Whelchel, Rhys Hodge and Nathan Doty all share responsibilities managing retail sales as well as handling instrument rentals and repairs. Then, of course, there’s Brian Haines, the owner, or as he jokes, the “old guy.” But that’s not all. Between the four of them, they are experienced musicians and instructors, offering lessons in just about any instrument you can imagine: guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo and other folk instruments, drums and percussion, clarinet, saxophone, piano, voice, trumpet, trombone, other brass, and even the euphonium. Whelchel, a 2019 Canby High School grad who started working at Canby Music late last year, teaches vocals and a variety of other instruments. She’s also a blossoming singersongwriter in her own right. “It’s been amazing,” she said, of her time at Canby Music. “I’ve been learning so much and growing as a person. I’ve been doing a lot of lessons, and it’s been really fun to stretch myself and hear different types of voices.” The store is offering those lessons in a variety of ways: at any of their four spacious, brand-new private lesson rooms, through Zoom or out on the store’s spacious side porch — 22 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

which Haines rebuilt with the idea of doing concerts from there someday. “Lessons on the porch, I’m just throwing that out there if someone wants to do it,” Haines said. “I think that would be really good for brass and woodwind, especially, because of the way air travels. And I think it would be enjoyable for people.” The store also offers a wide variety of instrument rentals, which are popularly used by both school band programs and individual customers. New this year, and to help you get started right, Canby Music is offering two free lessons with every rental. The first one will cover the basics: how to put your instrument together, play your first notes and properly clean it before putting it away. The second lesson will be scheduled for a later date and will cover any questions or struggles you may be having with your instrument. They are also doing rentals in the store, or over the phone, with free, no-contact delivery (think of it like GrubHub but, you know, for a tuba). Canby Music is also now a licensed Casio dealer, including its high-end Privia line, which are fully digital pianos that are meant to feel – and sound – just like the real thing. Now, about that new store. After a more than two-year renovation project, Canby Music in August moved into its new location: three blocks to the north and three times as big. Their new location is a commercial property on the corner of Douglas and First next to Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies, which is, in fact, a historic home. And despite its commercial zoning, it’s pretty much just been a home ever since it was built in 1923 by a man named Chris Huiras — until Canby Music came along, that is.

For Haines, the move was exciting – and terrifying. Transforming a residential property into a commercial one is no small feat – especially when the structure was built almost a century ago. Haines and his crew – which included his father, Norm, 7-year-old son, Henry, and his employee, Hodge – had to strip the building’s insides down to the original, hand-hewn 2x4s. The interior was completely renovated, rewired and refinished. In the building they found an old cabinet that looked like it might be an antique. As it turns out, what is now Canby Music was the childhood home of lifetime area resident William Keyser. In one of those twists that make the old-

timers shake their heads and say, “That’s Canby,” Keyser and Haines’ father are old friends and former high school classmates. Not only that, they were born in the same hospital, on the exact same day. Norman Haines reached out to Keyser, who confirmed that the antique cabinet had belonged to his family and that he’d love to have it back, but he was too busy with Christmas tree customers to come get it. So, the Haineses loaded it up and delivered it themselves. That’s Canby! Check Canby Music out at their new location: 590 NW 1st Avenue, visit them online at canbymusic.com or call 503-263-2263. ◾

THE CHAMBER CORNER Dear Canby Area Residents, I am writing this letter to you just after the wildfire events that overtook our community and under a veil of smoke, but I am not here to lament the hardships, which are many, but to take a look at all of the AMAZING things that have happened in light of this once in a lifetime conflagration. Many residents in our region were affected by the fires and have seen the loss of life and property, and we cannot undercut the hardship these individuals, families and businesses have faced. There is another story that took place during this time too, and I want to make sure that we don’t lose sight of the hopeful actions of the individuals who stepped up to answer the call in these hard times. I want to start with a deeply profound word of thanks to our first responders. Canby Fire District, Molalla Fire District, Aurora Fire District, and other fire agencies have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their operations around our region. They truly are the picture of community spirit, selflessness, and bravery that we should hold as some of our highest ideals. In my talks with the Vice President of the Chamber Board, Jim Davis, I have heard stories that made me marvel at the tenacity, bravery, and selflessness of our local crews. We owe them a debt of gratitude higher than I feel is possible to express in these few paltry words. In addition, Canby Police Department, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, and other agencies have also answered the call to protect our communities in this time of need. The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce is forever grateful for their commitment to helping preserve human life and property throughout this time. To Laurie Bothwell, Tyler Nizer, the Clackamas County Fair Board, and all of the volunteers who stepped up to make the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center a safe haven for both human life and animal life, we should all be grateful. I visited the fairgrounds almost every day in the days after the fire, and I saw a commitment to service and a grace under pressure that made me proud of my community. Donations streamed in and volunteers rushed to sort and distribute those offerings to families in need. The Canby Center and the Canby Adult Center also played a key role in making sure families were fed and people had the resources they needed throughout the situation.

OCT - NOV 2020 To the corporate donors like Costco Wholesale, Wilco, River City Environmental, Wilson Construction, Caruso Produce, Coastal Farm Stores, Anderson Hay, Baker’s Prairie Bakery, Cutsforth’s Market, State Farm, Bentley Feed, Home Depot, NV Feed, West Family, NW Mobile Vet, Ya Ya’s Catering, Taco Bell, Hampton Lumber – Tillamook, Diesel Diagnosis John Flintjer and many, many others, your donations and services were felt in this community’s time of need, and we will be forever grateful for your contributions. While the wildfires were a moment of hardship for our community, it was also a moment that provided the opportunity for individuals, organizations, and businesses to step up and rise to the challenge for the betterment of all, and I am proud of our community’s efforts to ensure the needs of others were met. You’ve made us all proud, Canby. Be well. We will feel the effects of this situation for a while, but after what I’ve seen, I have the utmost confidence that our community will be stronger as a result. Be kind. Watch out for your neighbors and your community and, as always, reach out to the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce if you have needs that need to be met but don’t know where to turn. We pride ourselves on being a conveyer of resources that help strengthen our community. Be well! Sincerely, Kyle Lang, Executive Director Canby Area Chamber of Commerce chamber@canbyareachamber.org www.CanbyAreaChamber.com 503-266-4600

ROTARIANS SUPPORT CUTSFORTH’S CRUISE-IN Canby Rotarians joined with the Canby Cruisers Car Club and many community volunteers and financial supporters on August 29 for the annual Cutsforth’s Thriftway Cruise-In. There were about 450 registered classic vehicles and 1000 vehicles filled with enthusiastic “lookers” that attended the event. This is a family-oriented recreational and educational activity which was especially important and appreciated because of the limited number of community activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rotarians worked at check in, traffic control, setup, cleanup and tear down, coffee station, tee shirt distribution, trophy presentation, event promotion, and event photography. We are most proud of Rotarian Frank Cutsforth who chaired the Cruise-In and spent many hours coordinating, brainstorming, meeting, and communicating with obvious outstanding results. Involvement and engagement of Canby Rotarians is an expression of love for our community.

Community organizations and businesses benefit from the event held annually for 26 years although changes were made this year because of community safety concerns. The Cruise-In brings the community together and promotes local tourism while showcasing an aspect of transportation history.

“It’s the best of both worlds ~ science and nature.”

MEET OUR NEW DOCTOR:

Scott Ferguson, nd by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

eet Dr. Scott Ferguson, the Canby Clinic’s newest naturopathic physician, who joined the practice on May 1.

Dr. Ferguson is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, who said he had “very early ambitions” to go into the medical field. He attended medical school at The National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, then completed his two-year residency in Australia. It was his abiding interest in the study of genetics that took him Down Under prior to medical school, and the experience exposed him to different philosophies of care and a deeper understanding of naturopathic and preventative medicine. “My ambition was to be a holistic pediatrician,” he said. “I wanted to focus on more preventative therapies such as diet and nutrition, and the more cutting-edge genetic treatments that were on the horizon.” During a medical career that has spanned more than 25 years, Dr. Ferguson has been active in private practice, education and consulting. He has published several books in the areas of natural medicine and diagnostic interpretation, and given lectures across the globe. One of his specialties is functional medicine, also known as integrative medicine. “It’s the best of both worlds.” he says. “Science and nature. That’s where I see the future of medicine going.” For much of the past two decades, he has been based in private practice in the Happy Valley area, but he moved to Sherwood last year. Before joining the Canby Clinic, Dr. Ferguson was working in laboratory medicine for a biopharmaceutical company with locations in Oregon (and around the world). The company specializes in manufacturing plasma-derived and recombinant therapeutic products, and has joined other leading companies in a global effort to develop “CoVIg-19,” a potential plasma-derived therapy for treating those with serious complications from the novel coronavirus. Dr. Ferguson was on a state task force that was leading Oregon’s effort in that regard, which was chiefly tasked with isolating antibodies from COVID-19 patients for further study.

40 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

“The primary focus is on isolating antibodies from convalescent plasma, from patients that have had exposure,” Dr. Ferguson explained. “That’s where a lot of the energy and focus is right now: trying to develop biological therapies, as opposed to, say, a vaccination that could take a year or more to properly isolate and test.” Dr. Ferguson said the state of primary care led him to return to a role where he was able to interact with patients more directly. Personal responsibility, prevention and empowerment are the cornerstones of his philosophy for care and healthy living. He said he is happy to be part of the Canby community, and is particularly impressed with the Clinic’s membershipbased model of care. “It’s a novel concept in its implementation,” he said. “I’m really, really pleased to see how well that is working in allowing affordable care and access to a number of patients, who don’t have to wait for us to answer to insurance companies in terms of what we can do.” If you’d like to meet Dr. Ferguson and hear more about the Canby Clinic’s naturopathic approach to high-quality, personalized primary health care, take advantage of their free, 15-minute “Meet the Doctor” appointment. FALL FUN IN CANBY! Many of the usual fall harvest events have been canceled or significantly modified this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but there is still plenty of fun to be had! Here are a couple of events that will still be going on to provide Canby with some seasonal cheer: CLACKAMAS COUNTY SCARE FAIR

Some ghoulish new residents are moving into Canby, as the Clackamas County Fairgrounds presents “Scare Fair,” a drive-thru Halloween experience running every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through October. The fairgrounds is partnering with scare-masters Fearlandia, Davis Graveyard, The Nightmare Factory and Creatures of the Night to transform the Clackamas County Fairgrounds into a (PG-13 rated) fear fest. “We were just thinking about ways we could do something for Halloween while still fitting within the rules,” said Fairgrounds Events and Marketing Coordinator Tyler Nizer, referring to the county’s phase 1 coronavirus guidelines. Fearlandia is a top-rated haunted house production company and prop maker based in Tigard. Davis Graveyard is a free Halloween attraction produced by the Davis family at their home in Milwaukie each year. The Nightmare Factory in Salem is Oregon’s longest-running haunted house, now in its 35th year. Creatures of the Night is a company that produces haunted attractions, as well as handling costumes, makeup, special effects and storytelling from their headquarters in Marylhurst. Nizer said he reached out to one of the haunted attraction companies to see if they’d be interested in producing the unique experience at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. They reached out to the other creative teams, and it “kind of snowballed from there,” as he says. “Since most of them weren’t really doing anything this year, they were 42 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

interested,” Nizer explained. “It’s cool because they’re mostly thinking outside the box of what they normally do.” An individual ticket price is $11, or $20 per car. The “Scare Fair” will be presented every weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in October, including Sunday, November 1st. Tickets are available now and space is limited. Visit ClackamasCountyFair. com and click “TICKETS” to purchase yours.

DOWNTOWN CANBY SCARECROW CONTEST

Not even the pandemic could derail one of Canby’s newer, but dearly beloved, traditions. The scarecrow contest returns to downtown Canby this fall! Canby Scarecrow Contest organizer Shannon Allee of Hot Rod Dreamworks said the third annual version will be presented virtually, unchanged from previous years. Local businesses, schools, organizations and clubs will be invited to build and decorate scarecrows for placement throughout the downtown core. The scarecrows themselves can be made out of almost anything, from your more traditional effigies forged from worn-out old clothes and straw to, well, pretty much anything you can imagine. The scarecrow contest and its sister event, the Canby Snowman Contest in December, have produced figures made from mannequins, trash bags, water tanks, trash bags, hay bales, old tires and even prefabricated signs. Once the scarecrows are installed, Hot Rod Dreamworks will offer an online portal for residents to vote for their favorites, with the winning

organization netting a cash prize. The scarecrow display and voting run throughout the month of October. For more information, visit hotroddreamworks.com.

LOCAL PUMPKIN PATCHES & HARVEST FESTIVALS

Many of the local farms in the area are still open for business this fall, including Fir Point Farms in Aurora and Bauman Farms down near Gervais. Be sure to visit the website of any farm you plan to venture out to, to see their updated event information and rules for visiting.

Several of the annual harvest festival events have been necessarily cancelled or restructured to ensure the safety of all staff and visitors, but you can still go out and hunt for the perfect pumpkin, get lost in a corn maze, and pick up those irresistible Apple Cider Donuts! Now more than ever, it’s important to continue supporting our local businesses and communities, and to remember that it’s ok to have some fun! This autumn may be different than previous years, but we can still enjoy the changing of the leaves and find simpler ways to celebrate the season. ◾

Mattress World Northwest A LOCALLY-OWNED DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH by Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

attress stores seem to be a dime a dozen, with locations on virtually every street corner and dozens of online options as well. I have to admit that before speaking to Sean Hathaway, President and Owner of Mattress World Northwest, I was ignorant of the nuances distinguishing one mattress retailer from another. I assumed that there must be only so many brands and so many varieties to chose from. One buying experience would be the same as the next, right? Wrong. In fact, I could not have been more wrong. How could I have been so wrong, you ask? Well, for starters, there’s the personal element. Sean has been in the business for over 25 years. He started the parent company Furniture Showcase, Inc. back in 1995, and has been serving the community as Mattress World Northwest since 2004. He and his team are sincerely and thoroughly dedicated to making your buying experience with them truly one of a kind. This is no mere sales ploy either. Sean is the genuine article and it’s obvious in talking to him that he really cares deeply about his employees and his customers. As a business, Sean tells me they have a three-pronged approach for success: first and foremost is making sure that they are providing their customers with the very best buying options available to give them a good night sleep. They have the largest selection in the Northwest at guaranteed low prices (they will beat any retail competitor’s prices on a comparable bed by 5%) and they literally hand pick every mattress they sell based on the optimal combination of both quality and value. In addition, if you

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Please join Mattress World Northwest in sponsoring & donating to the

RACE FOR THE CURE 46 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

visit their website, you will see that they have pages of articles written on the science of sleep. They consider it their SEAN HATHAWAY Owner responsibility to educate and assist their customers in finding the ideal mattress. The second prong is making sure their employees are happy. Again, it’s obvious from talking to Sean how much he cares for and believes in his employees. This is one of those places you hear about but rarely find; one of those diamonds in the rough, where young folks start working while they’re still in school but never leave because they’re so happy there. They legitimately treat their employees like family and empower them to live their best lives. With the business side of things covered in the first two prongs, their last (although certainly not least) priority is helping the communities they reside in. This was, to me, perhaps the most impressive part of their operational plan. Not content to simply donate money to a charity or two (though they do that as well), Sean and his entire team have incorporated fund raising and general philanthropy into their entire corporate culture. There’s almost never a time when you will walk into one of their stores that they’re not promoting some sort of fund-raising event, whether it’s for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Susan G. Komen, Special Olympics Oregon, the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas County or any of the local schools. Family owned and operated, dedicated to providing their customers with the best products at the best prices, all while donating to and participating in their local communities in the most meaningful ways, Mattress World Northwest exemplifies the finest of what retail businesses have to offer. They prove without a doubt that not all mattress stores are created equal. Next time you need a bed, don’t hesitate. Go to Mattress World Northwest and let them take care of you. They are taking extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of all customers and employees. Get a better night’s sleep and help support your community at the Mattress World Northwest Canby store located at 298 Northwest 1st Ave (503-266-6771). They are open every day from 10am-7pm or you can order online at mattressworldnorthwest.com. ■

Birch Street Animal Clinic PRACTICING GUILT-FREE MEDICINE by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Dr. Dax Miller, owner of the Birch Street Animal Clinic, was the kid whom all his friends said would grow up to be a veterinarian. For once, they were right. “I was always bringing home the baby birds that fell out of nests,” he said with a laugh. “Going to mom and dad saying, ‘Can we keep it?’ ‘Can we save it?’ I did a lot of that.” Miller, or “Dr. Dax” as his clients know him, grew up with horses and other animals on a small farm near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis. One day he found a kitten (which he wanted to keep, of course) shortly before the family was supposed to leave for a full day at the Six Flags amusement park in St. Louis. His parents told him that if the kitten was still there when they got back, he could keep him. They assumed the stray would have found a new home, but they were wrong. The next day, the kitten was still there, just waiting for Dax. The kitten was named Jasper and became Dax’s companion for over a decade, eventually dying while he was in veterinary school. Dax entertained thoughts of a career in medicine or even law, but it was a job at a local veterinary clinic when he was 16 that put him on his current path. “That was where I realized, ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life,’” he said. He studied zoology at Southeast Missouri State University and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. During summer breaks, he worked on ranches leading trail rides in Colorado and Wyoming. Since graduating from vet 50 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

school in 2007, Dax has worked in Grenada, Salem and Gresham before purchasing Birch Street Animal Clinic from its longtime owner, Dr. John Harpster, in 2011. Birch Street Animal Clinic also features the services of Dr. Jarret Dod, whose career also began at a local vet clinic when he was a teenager. He later became Miller’s classmate in veterinary school at St. George’s and joined him at Birch Street shortly after he purchased the clinic. The clinic handles a wide variety of services and animals, but is mainly dedicated to the care of dogs and cats. Though Birch Street’s logo includes a few other animals, such as a bird, rabbit and turtle, the care of such animals is not a specialty there. They offer some basic care for rabbits and ferrets, and can perform beak trims and clipping for birds. “We’re basically small animals, dogs and cats,” Dr. Dax says. His approach is simple: “We practice guiltfree medicine here. I know how to practice what you might call ‘gold star medicine,’ and we can run every test and do everything that you would like us to do,” he explained. “But if you don’t have the ability to spend that money on your pet, that’s your decision. We don’t make you feel bad for that.” Birch Street Animal Clinic is located at 145 Birch Street, near Canby High School. For the latest information about the clinic, including how COVID-19 may have impacted services, or to schedule an appointment, visit www.birchstreetanimalclinic.com/ or call the clinic at 503-266-5881. ◾

CANBY’S

Agricultural

HERITAGE

GET TING BACK TO OUR ROOTS by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

he roots of Canby all come back to farming. Canby wouldn’t be where or what it is today without agriculture. Most likely, it wouldn’t be here at all.

Canby can credit its agricultural success to the area’s fertile, sandy soils (deposited here, geologists believe, in the massive floods from Lake Missoula that ripped through the Willamette Valley during the last ice age, some 15,000 years ago) and of course to the hard work of our first farmers and settlers. The area had a reputation as a so-called “Garden of Eden” long before the first Oregon Trail blazers made their way to Canby. It all began with berries. The ground we now call Canby was open and virtually clear of trees when settlers from the East first arrived here in the middle of the 19th century. Although

join us in helping the canby center providing social services in our community

vast rows of trees encircled this “prairie,” abundant crops of strawberries and other wild fruits grew here. Most historians believe the land was a garden for the local Native American tribes, who had long before burned down the trees and allowed berries to grow. The tribes who used this area (the Clackamas, a Chinookian tribe) were a nomadic people, who wandered throughout the valley. The lush green valley was the home to Native Americans and their predecessors for eons. The Clackamas County Historical Society has several prehistoric relics collected from this area, indicating man had long used the meadows, springs and trees of this area. They used the area like a giant store, in some respects, traveling to where the plants they survived on flourished. What is now Canby was apparently a favorite spot, with the small tribes continually coming here for the fresh strawberries. Situated atop a grassy plateau above the Willamette and Molalla rivers, the first permanent settlement here was named Baker Prairie, probably for the larger-than-life frontiersman James Baker, who lived for a time on the prairie before leaving to make his reputation as an explorer, army scout, interpreter, soldier, territorial militia officer and more. Baker reportedly rubbed shoulders with legendary historical figures like Jim Bridger, Kit Carson and General Custer in his travels. The rambling Baker - who, later in life, would come to be known as “Big Jim” and “Honest Jim” - settled here in the early 1830s and operated a huge ranch and farm on the rich lands that now form north Canby. He stayed until at least 1838, and possibly as late as 1845; the records aren’t exactly ironclad. What is certain is that Baker eventually tired of farming and left, selling his interests in the farm business to a man named W. C. Dement.

PLEASE DONATE: thecanbycenter.org

Other settlers had followed Baker to the area, and Canby soon cultivated a reputation as one of the Willamette Valley’s richest farming utopias. Timber harvesting between 1873 and 1893 cleared the land and made space for even more farms. If you plant it in Canby, it will grow: peas, hops, filberts, flax,

squash, potatoes, lettuce, melons, tomatoes, and of course, strawberries. You name it, it probably has been or is still being grown around here. Philander Lee, one of Canby’s founders and patriarch of the family that donated the land that became the town’s first 24 blocks, grew apples on his land and carted them up the road to train cars leaving Oregon City that would take them south to prospectors in the California goldfields.

Swan Island Dahlias, now one of the cultural centers of Canby, actually began (as the name suggests) on Swan Island in Portland. It was moved to rented land in Canby in the 1940s. Around 1953, 20 acres of farmland was purchased in Canby, and the business was relocated to its present site on North Holly, a stone’s throw from the Canby Ferry. (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)

Legend holds that Lee and his sons, frustrated by the narrow roads they encountered in Oregon City, mandated that Canby’s streets be wide enough to turn around a horse-drawn carriage, which is why downtown Canby’s streets are unusually spacious compared to most city centers. In the 1930s, green peas became so abundant that they took over a city block. Countless loads of peas were stripped from the vine at what became known as “pea viner corner” on 13th and Ivy, now the home of the Canby Adult Center and Canby Swim Center. After vining, the peas were trucked to Woodburn for food processing. Produce from Canby, especially fresh strawberries, were often first on the market in those days, and many a young Canbyite earned his or her first income as a berry picker in one of the town’s many strawberry fields. Flower growers also discovered that the land north of town, between the city and the Willamette River, was perfect for growing their crops. Ben Cummings grew lovely fields of pansies, irises, lilies, tulips and other petaled varieties in the 1920s and ‘30s, and visitors would flock to Canby just to view his land. CANBY CANBY COMMUNITY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE •• 55 55

HISTORY OF AGRICULTURE ... continued Grant E. Mitsch of Canby was the leading U.S. hybridizer of daffodils in the 1950s and ‘60s, and flower farms still surround the town today. Farming spurred the growth of the city’s early economy and development, from the establishment of a railroad depot to the Canby Ferry — both of which were used primarily for agricultural and other commercial pursuits before offering passenger service. It also led directly to and supported the Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo, the annual Dahlia Festival, and former warehouse development along the railroad line, which now form much of the infrastructure of downtown Canby. Three warehouses in particular - the W. H. Lucke warehouse (burned in 1930), W. S. Hurst & Co. warehouse (demolished in 1950), and the W. H. Bair warehouse (demolished in the 1980s) - facilitated shipments of farm products from Canby to market. By 1913, the Canby Produce Company (later, the Canby Cooperative Cheese & Produce Company) had also established a warehouse along the railroad. It would be fair to say that our roots go deep here in Canby. Many descendents of the original families who settled and worked the land, building the city from the ground up, still reside here today. Canby is a city with a legacy that is tied to the earth it is built on, and just as the plants in the rich soil have flourished and grown, so has our beloved town. ◾

Canby High School Band Shines On Screen! The Canby High School Band is used to being in the spotlight, but this year several members were drafted into a role that was a little bigger than the usual halftime shows or parades. About a dozen members were featured in the new Netflix film All Together Now, which premiered on the platform in August. The film stars 19-year-old Auli’i Cravalho, lead actress from Disney’s 2016 hit Moana, as well as Fred Armisen, Carol Burnett, and many other big names. Based on the novel Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick, All Together Now is a teen drama that tells the story of optimistic and musically gifted high schooler Amber Appleton, played by Cravalho, who dreams of going to Carnegie Mellon University, her deceased father’s alma mater. Karrie Garrett, a recent graduate of Canby High School and former band member, said the film’s casting director called CHS band director Nick Luchterhand back in October 2019 because they needed a high school band with the colors blue and gold. The band discussed and accepted the offer, and thirty students from the wind ensemble were selected (based on seniority) to participate as extras. Eight students got to play a larger role in the production, including Karrie. These students filmed for three days straight at the old Concord Elementary School building in Milwaukie. During that time the students met most of the cast, including Cravalho and Armisen. “This was the best part of filming, in my opinion,” Karrie said. “They are the most amazing people... What’s also amazing is Fred Armisen used to be in a band, so he was super happy to see us playing. He even signed and autographed our drum set!” The filming of the larger group of Canby High School Band members took place at Oregon City High School. It was an unforgettable experience for the students, who got an inside look at the making of a major motion picture. “It gave us insight into how much effort goes into putting on a movie,” said Karrie. “We got to see every part of the industry from makeup, hairstyling, costume designers, to the camera filming, the special effects, and to even hear the sound of the clapperboard! “We may have been exhausted after working super long days, but in the end, we were just really excited to be part of it. And those who have seen the movie know the band has a huge impact on the entire story!” All Together Now premiered on Netflix on August 28th and has been well-received by critics and audiences alike. Congrats to our CHS band members on their amazing experience - I’m sure they delivered a performance to be proud of! ■ 60 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
