Letter From The Publisher Welcome to our June 2022 issue of Canby Community Advantage Magazine. We are incredibly excited to present our third issue of 2022, which is jam packed with tons of things to see, do, and buy. Here’s a quick glimpse of what’s inside this issue. Featured on our cover is Art-O-Maddic. Canby’s local art gallery. As you can see, they’re mildly obsessed with Alice in Wonderland, which translates into a whimsical and fun vibe you can experience at their store. If you haven’t visited them yet, make sure you enter “through the looking glass” to see some great works of art from many talented local artists. When June hits, Father’s Day is near. If you’re interested in how Father’s Day got started and eventually became a National Holiday, look inside. If you’re looking for a quiet night of watching movies (rent or stream), check out our Summer Cinema movies review. Next, we have the History of the Canby Police Department, as well as summertime BBQ Tips for outdoor cooking done right, and a feature on Canby’s summertime concert series, Slice of Summer. This issue also highlights a myriad of spotlight stories, including FOB Taproom as our Taste Of The Town, Cutsforth’s Sushi Bar, Dick’s Canby Ford, Mattress World Northwest and Bloomin’ Blinds! We also showcase the talents of local sign-making artist Tanner Cutsforth. And this month’s “Meat” The Veteran article, sponsored by Ebner’s Custom Meats, features none other than Robert “Cash” McCall – a selfless hero and longtime member of the Air Force. Read about him inside. And don’t miss this month’s Student Athlete, sponsored by Roth’s Heating and Cooling, Canby’s High School’s talented softball team. On a personal note... When I graduated from college in the early ’90s, my first job was working for a local musician named Dan Reed who had a band called The Dan Reed Network. Fast forward 30ish years, and Dan Reed and his Network are back, getting ready to release their new album, Let’s Hear It For The King. In this feature article, we take a peek at what shaped Dan into the musician he is today, as well as discuss all things music and his new album. And as always, packed throughout this publication are great local deals and specials from some of Canby’s finest restaurants, retailers, home improvement specialists, and more. Our next issue will be out just in time for the Clackamas County Fair. We hope everyone has a wonderful June and July! Matthew Nelson, Publisher Canby Community Advantage Magazine P.S.: If your business services local residents, please give me a call at 503-825-2111 to see how partnering with us will put you in the homes of everyone in Canby and Aurora.

FRIENDS OF BEER®
Sudsy Summer JOIN YOUR FOB FRIENDS FOR BREWS OUTSIDE
By Hilary Berg, Staff Writer
S
ometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name... Like the neighborhood bar on the sitcom “Cheers,” FOB Taproom takes care of its customers. Owner Steve Puga calls his patrons “friends.” No surprise, given his business name. Friends of Beer — FOB for short — makes pals out of people who are passionate about brew. The 34 rotating taps, representing producers from around the globe, are ever-changing, and yet, the classics are always available. Looking for the malty sweetness of a German pilsner? It’s here. How about an authentic weissbier ripe with notes of banana and clove? That’s tap 10. What about a thirstquenching Mexican-style lager with a wedge of lime? All summer long, grab a pint. No matter the style, FOB has a cold one for everyone.
Although FOB does not serve food, those who wish to dine and drink have many options. Customers are welcome to bring in takeout food or have items delivered. Puga recommends Thai Corner Cuisine. Not only is the restaurant next door, the staff regularly walks orders over to the bar. Puga recommends a kölsch or pilsner for pad Thai or red curry. He explains, “You want something light to pair with dishes that are spicy.” As the weather heats up, patrons can once again head to the patio, where Puga plans to expand the outdoor experience with more seating, plus the coolest way to keep warm when the sun goes down: a gravity-fed wood-pellet heater that radiates the perfect warmth. Sounds like the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening with a pint of fresh suds, maybe a bite or two, and a chance to hang with friends — friends made both outside and inside the FOB. Cheers!

TASTE OF THE TOWN
FOB TAPROOM
This One’s For You By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
M
any a local watering hole has aspired to emulate the beloved bar from the sitcom “Cheers,” and its reputation as a place “where everybody knows your name.” FOB (Friends of Beer) Taproom owners Steve and Leanne Puga are no different, but they asked themselves, “Why stop there?” At FOB, not only do they know your name—they can even put it on a mug for you. Such is the lot of FOB’s Mug Club, whose members’ steins line the lighted coolers above the bar’s rows of more than three dozen taps serving the best craft beer, cider, and other drinks. “We’re really trying to create that ‘Cheers’ environment, where we know you, we know what you drink, and we have it waiting for you when you walk in the door,” Steve says. “That was always the intention with FOB, and certainly, with the Mug Club. Your stein’s ready, it’s cold, and it’s on the counter practically before you walk in the door.” Like many aspects of FOB, the Mug Club was inspired by Steve’s love of German pubs, which he frequented during his previous career in supply chain logistics that often took him overseas. “I saw that a lot over there, all the ceramic steins lined up behind the bar with the regulars’ names on them,” he says. “On any given day, a lot of the folks who come through the doors here are Mug Club members. I always love seeing them. It’s like family, you know? It makes me feel good.” Even in a thirsty region packed with craft breweries and cider houses, Steve has a passion for beer that stands out, helping fuel the taproom’s ever-rotating repertoire of labels and selections. “People ask me sometimes if I’m going to retire someday,” he says with a laugh. “I say, ‘This is my working retirement. My passion is beer. I love beer, and I love what I do. My friends know, I’ll talk about beer all day long.”
10 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
As a family-owned, independent business, FOB takes a lot of pride in showcasing the work of the many brewers in the Pacific Northwest, Steve says, but will always take a look at new beers and breweries from a variety of states, regions, and countries, with a particular emphasis on smaller companies and self-distributors. “If there’s delicious beer out there, I don’t care what country it’s from or what part of the United States, we’re going to take a look at it,” Steve says. “But we think very carefully about the different things that we bring in, and what would be fun for the community to try.” Steve is always seeking to bring new flavors, styles, and tastes to the area, even if they’re a little out there. That’s included a Rogue ale brewed with wild yeast originally cultured (intentionally) from the beard hairs of brewmaster John Maier, or a recent selection from Ex Novo Brewing, “Hello, My Name is Indigo Montoya,” known less for its taste than its shocking, almost-neon blue color, which derives from indigo leaves. “Our goal is to try to curate as many different beers as we can possibly get our hands on,” he says. “There are so many great breweries out there, and being able to bring that to people is what really excites us. Life’s too short to just drink one brewery or one style of beer. Why would you want to do that?” Another passion that’s also well-known to the regular —or even the casual returners or first-time guests—is his love of the Portland Timbers. The taproom was designated as an official Timbers Army viewing location on 107ist.org earlier this year, and is steadily
gaining a reputation—both in and outside of Canby—as a great place to watch the Timbers. “What we’re trying to do is develop a fanbase here at FOB, where more and more people know this is a place they can come if they’re looking for a hardcore Timbers bar,” says Steve, who is a season ticket holder. “We’re still trying to grow it, and the attendance is up and down. But for the big matches, this place can get pretty raucous with soccer hooligans, which is kind of fun.” The FOB is also continuing its long tradition of Wednesday night trivia, with guests encouraged to call ahead if they’re concerned about crowding. That won’t be as much of a concern with warmer weather, as the taproom revamps its outdoor seating area and turns it into one of the places to be in Canby this summer, complete with a brand-new, gravity-fed wood pellet patio stove by Timber Stoves. “It makes things really cozy, and that’s what we’re all about: Great beer and a cozy atmosphere,” Steve says. “We’ve fired it up a few times and people seem to really enjoy it.” The Taproom will bring back its popular FOBtoberfest event, inspired by the German tradition of Oktoberfest. FOBtoberfest celebrates all things community and beer and is held each September to coincide with Steve and his team’s favorite time of year. FOB also offers live music and disc jockeys, Mug Club events, and other fun stuff happening throughout the year. FOB Taproom is located in the Canby Place shopping center at 1109 SW 1st Avenue. Father's Day History By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Origins
The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Washington State. However, not until 1972—58 years after Mother’s Day was made official by President Woodrow Wilson—did Father’s Day become a national holiday. The campaign to celebrate fathers didn’t have the same enthusiasm as celebrating mothers–maybe because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginian church sponsored the nation’s first event honoring fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. But it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year in Spokane, Washington, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish an official holiday for fathers. She went to the YMCA, local churches, business owners, and government officials to garner support for her idea, and she was successful! On June 19, 1910, Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day, and the holiday slowly spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to observe Father’s Day.
Controversy and Commercialism
Strangely, many fathers and men criticized the holiday! As one historian wrote, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental 20 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products–often paid for by the father himself.” During the 1920s and 1930s, a protest movement formed to demand a single holiday instead, called Parents’ Day, in place of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Each Mother’s Day, pro-Parents’ Day groups protested in New York City’s Central Park. Parents’ Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere commented, “a public reminder that both parents should be loved and respected together.” The Great Depression, however, deflated these protest efforts, as retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men; promoting neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. At the breakout of WWII, advertisers argued that Father’s Day honored American troops and supported the war effort. After the war, Father’s Day was still not a federal holiday, but it became a national institution. In 1972, in the midst of his arduous presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon made Father’s Day an official national holiday. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. In other countries–especially in Europe and Latin America–fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19. In the United States and elsewhere, Father’s Day 2022 will occur on Sunday, June 19.
Does weight lifting increase fat loss? M ost people assume that weightlifting helps
you lose weight because it increases the
number of calories you burn. While this is true there is more to it than just calories burned.
Research has shown that when we lift weights, our muscle releases a special type of cell
into our blood called extracellular vesicles.
These cells leave the muscle carrying a strand of generic material called miR-1 which then deposits in neighboring fat cells.
Interesting fact, while in fat cells miR-1 hinders
muscle growth but once it is deposited in a fat cell it can turbo charge fat burning.
Knowing this we can expedite our fat loss
while boosting our fat burning by following a plan that includes a generous portion of
weight lifting supplemented by cardio routine without overdoing it!
TIPS ON HYDRATION: First off, what is dehydration? Dehydration
is generally defined as 1 to 2% loss of body
weight but this is acceptable just suboptimal. More than 2% can significantly reduce
performance and increase your risk of heat stroke or worse.
Secondly, being over hydrated is actually worse than being dehydrated. Excessive
amounts of water quickly dilutes the sodium concentration of the blood, this leads to a condition known as exercise-associated hyponatremia AKA water intoxication.
The solution you ask? Well it’s actually very
simple.... Drink when you’re thirsty, don’t drink when you aren’t thirsty, and you’ll be fine.

By Kat Fajardo A new graphic novel for ages 8–12. Sue would rather spend the summer at camp with her friends than visit family she hardly knows in Honduras. CANBY LIVABILITY COALITION
SLICE OF SUMMER
By Olive Gallagher, Contributing Writer
S
ummer fun in Canby is returning for 2022 thanks to the Canby Livability Coalition. The popular and fan-favorite Slice of Summer concert series will return once again to Wait Park for concerts from 6 to 8 PM on four Sunday evenings in July and August. This year will be bigger and better than ever, with the season offering four concerts—two in July and two in August. Kicking off the season on July 10th will be the Jesse James Band. This rocking country music party band is led by Hubbard natives and brothers James Curtis and Jesse Slover, who have been playing together for 40 years. The second show, scheduled for July 24th, will feature the PNW’s Thrillride, back for a third time at the festival. Thrillride plays an incredible hybrid of upbeat rock, funk, and country. Then on August 7th, Portland’s Stump City Soul will step up to entertain the community with their soul funk dance music featuring an impressive brass section. And to close out the season two weeks later on August 21st, Portland’s Generator will wrap it all up with the fourth and final concert, playing a variety of rock, soul, R&B, motown, blues, and boogie. Canby fans will remember that Slice of Summer was one of the first live music events in Oregon to announce a comeback last year, so being able to continue to move forward in 2022 is even more exciting!

“We’re so energized to continue on into an exciting summer season following our return last year,” said board chair Lisa Leir, who also administrates the community Facebook group Canby Now. “And once again, just seeing the community out and about,” Lisa continued, “enjoying a summer evening, chatting with neighbors, singing and dancing…well, it lifts everyone’s spirits, especially when people get up and dance.” Lisa believes that now more than ever the community is once again primed and ready again for some great music and dancing. She emphasized, “After staying home for so long, we have lots to celebrate this year!” A Canby tradition since 1985, the Slice of Summer series was canceled in 2017 when the Canby Music Boosters (who previously organized the concerts) could no longer run the event. Fortunately, the community wanted Slice of Summer back after going one year without, and a new volunteer group, led by Lisa Leir, revived the series under the direction of the Canby nonprofit Livability Coalition. The concerts feature local and regional acts and attract hundreds of music-lovers to downtown Canby, as well as offering delicious food and treats! Slice of Summer couldn’t be successful without the vital participation of its food vendors: Crust Woodfire Pizza, Good News BBQ, Claudia’s Food Truck, Rock’n Latte, Willamette Valley Berries, and Kona Ice!
Slice of Summer concerts are free to the public, and it’s recommended that you bring your own blankets and chairs to sit on. The series is locally sponsored by a number of organizations and businesses, including Direct Link, Canby Kiwanis, Wilsonville Carpet and Tile, Canby Community Advantage Magazine (that’s us), Builders Supply, Cutsforth’s, Canby Rotary, 4:8 Financial, NorthLake Physical Therapy, Hope Village, and many small donations from people like you! A key to making these festivities possible is the support and participation by the incredible and vital volunteers who join every year and donate their energy, time, and talent to make these events successful for everyone. This year, volunteers are needed more than ever to complete essential tasks, such as setting up and tearing down the stage, selling water and raffle tickets, and keeping the bathrooms and grounds clean. If interested in volunteering, please contact Lisa Leir via Facebook or on the Slice of Summer website.
So don’t forget…you, too, can help, by contributing in whatever way you can; whether through donations, attendance, or your time, and help keep Slice of Summer moving forward and providing these wonderful events for the community. To contact Slice of Summer or get the latest updated news, visit the Canby Livability Coalition’s Facebook page at facebook.com/ sliceofsummer or visit their website at sliceofsummer.com.

MONEY MATTERS
CORNERSTONE WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Money Mantras By Matt Stutes, Certified Financial Planner
Market swings causing you some anxiety? These four money mantras can help you overcome it. Whether it’s the continuing presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, a sudden boost in prices for consumers, supply chain hiccups, an uncertain labor market (or any number of other things), the stock market has certainly seen its share of ups and downs over the past six months. As always, it’s impossible to predict what the market will do on any given day. But, it’s always a good idea to take some deep, measured breaths and focus on some basic money mantras. Doing so will help you push through any anxiety you may be feeling regarding your retirement account (no yoga pose required).
MANTRA #1: I Am Investing for the Long Term
bonds and cash), and market conditions cause one of your investments to decline, all of your money shouldn’t be affected.
“Saving for retirement is a journey not a sprint.”
An old saying goes, “saving for retirement is a journey, not a sprint.” A volatile market can push the most experienced investors into making emotional decisions. However, it’s never a good idea to change your investments simply because of day-to-day volatility. Set a strategy that’s right for you and stick with it. Having a diversified portfolio can help you build confidence in your long-term plan — so don’t just throw it out the window during big market swings! Historically, equity markets have trended upward over the long term. However, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Investing involves risk, so you may want to consider working with a financial professional who can help you review your current tolerance for risk, keeping in mind your other financial goals.
MANTRA #2: I Will Diversify My Portfolio
Putting your money into several investment options that include different types of asset classes can help reduce risk. If your dollars are invested in materially different types of investments (stocks,

A simpler way to understand diversification is to look at the food you put on your plate. The more food groups and colors on your plate, the more nutrients your body consumes and the healthier you are. If, however, you only ate pizza every day, your body would suffer from a lack of key nutrients. The same is true for an investment portfolio’s diversification. Investors who put their money in only one type of asset (such as stocks) are at an increased risk for loss of principal due to a lack of variety in their portfolio.
MANTRA #3: I Will Rebalance My Portfolio on a Regular Basis
Over time, market changes can lead to shifts in your portfolio’s asset allocation. For example, you may have started with a 75/25 stock fund-to-bond fund split, but changes in the market caused stocks to now account for 85% of your portfolio’s value. That’s why it’s important to periodically check your asset allocation to see if it aligns with your current strategy and risk tolerance. Keep in mind, you may also want to rebalance to a more aggressive or conservative allocation should your tolerance for risk change due to where you are in life or how close you are to retirement.
MANTRA #4: I Will Seek Professional Help If I Need It
Many people consult with an investment advisor for guidance regarding their retirement plan investments. An advisor can help you determine an appropriate investment strategy to achieve your financial goals that is based on your risk tolerance and time frame. This material was created for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended as ERISA, tax, legal or investment advice. If you are seeking investment advice specific to your needs, such advice services must be obtained on your own separate from this educational material.

MEET THE ARTIST
NAILED THAT DESIGN COMPANY
Tanner Cutsforth NAILED THAT DESIGN COMPANY By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
L
ocal woodworking artist Tanner Cutsforth, of Nailed That Design Co., didn’t start out looking for a new career, or even a new hobby. He was just looking for some home decor. “It all started when I bought my house in 2014,” he says. “I was a first-time homebuyer, you know, and I didn’t have any artwork or furniture, so I started making my own. The first piece I made was a world map. I posted a picture of it on Facebook, and someone said they wanted to buy it. So I sold my first piece that same week, and that’s where it all began.” Tanner discovered a particular affinity for signs and logos, which is not too surprising considering his “day job” as head of marketing for the familyowned Cutsforth’s Market.
“I do all the signage and digital design for the store, so I was already making signs for a living,” Tanner says. “It’s basically the same thing but in a different medium.” One of his specialties is string art, the threading of layers of string between rows of nails to form words or a picture, something he first began experimenting with after seeing the technique on HGTV. Large-scale examples of his work can be seen at many local businesses, including Ebner’s Custom Meats, Oliver Insurance, B. Ayres Plumbing, Ace Hardware, Martin’s Town and Country Furniture, Millar’s Point S Tire and Auto, Canby Rental and Equipment, Frontier Screenprinting, Frontier Golf, Chug Coffee, Matt Olsen State Farm Agency, Renee’s on Main, and, of course, Cutsforth’s Market, among many others.
He recently completed one of his most high-profile projects to date: a giant world map that’s been installed at the Wayfarer Lounge of the swanky SCP Redmond Hotel. Closer to home, he’s currently working on one of his most ambitious projects: an 8-foot-tall recreation of the iconic oak tree on the property of Canby’s Four Mile Nursery on South Highway 170. All of the wood he uses is reclaimed from local buildings and properties. “I’ve been using reclaimed wood for seven years,” he says. “If someone is tearing down an old fence, I am always willing to help with the removal in exchange for the wood. That’s where I get all of my material.” Until very recently, his tools were “reclaimed” as well. His main tool was a 25-year-old miter saw that was sitting unused in his parent’s barn.
“That’s when the sign business really took off,” Tanner says. “I’ve had great support from local businesses and the community, and I’m really grateful for that. The community of Canby is always so great in supporting local and that’s why I love Canby!”
“Up until last year, I was doing all of my cutting on this old saw with a rusty blade,” he says with a chuckle. “It worked because I wasn’t doing a lot of finesse cutting or anything like that. I didn’t need anything fancy.”
Tanner estimates he’s sold about 300 pieces, from business and corporate projects to individuals who want to immortalize their family name, commemorate a special occasion, or celebrate their favorite sports team, wedding gifts, and lastly, real estate closing gifts.
He’s since upgraded—a little—but every project is still done by hand and custom-made to order.

A Different Kind of Art Gallery
“What is Art-O-Maddic?”
S
ince we opened in June of 2021 we have received variations of this question. Art-O-Maddic is primarily an Art Gallery with a very eclectic collection of creations in all materials and styles, mostly made by local artists, but we brought in some nationaltouring artists for added variety. Many know us as a Creative Space hosting beginner-level classes for all ages in various mediums. Others know us as a unique space to rent for private events and gatherings. We are different things to different people.
The Art-O-Maddic name is a play on the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, one of our favorite stories. We chose this because we are creating a fun, whimsical vibe that is approachable for everyone. We live in Canby
and enjoy shopping local, so we created a unique experience we didn’t see anywhere else in our region, and it’s always evolving and changing. Whether you have $5 or $5,000, we try to have something for everyone. And if we don’t, we can arrange a commission for you. We are sometimes easy to miss off the corner of Grant and 2nd Avenue in downtown Canby, across from Backstop Bar and Grill. We like being Canby’s little secret. However, word is getting out and people are visiting us from farther and farther away. I guess you could say they are becoming curiouser and curiouser. Stop in and experience Art-O-Maddic for yourself. We think you will be happy you did.

BOB“CASH”McCALL “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer The trajectory of Bob “Cash” McCall’s life was forever changed by his decision to enlist in the United States Air Force, where he enjoyed a career spanning two and a half decades. He even got a new name out of the deal. He was 21 and in his first year of service when he and a large group of his fellow aviation cadets went to see the 1960 film “Cash McCall” starring James Garner and Natalie Wood. “When we came out of the movie theater, one of them said, ‘Your nickname now is going to be ‘Cash McCall,’” Cash recalls. “And it stuck with me through 24 years of service. Even today, most people don’t know my real name.” He had enlisted at the recommendation of a cousin who was in the Air Force. “It turned out to be a pretty good decision,” he says. For more than 10 years, Cash served as an aircrew navigator on missions that primarily concerned reconnaissance in North Vietnam during the war. It was a straightforward but extremely important job. “The purpose of the navigator is to keep the aircraft on track, detect emergencies if anything comes up,” Cash says. “It’s going from point A to point B, you know. I used to tell everybody, ‘I tell the pilots where to go.’ But it’s all based on trust. They trusted me because I never got them lost.” He flew 5,500 hours for the military, including 110 missions gathering intelligence in and around Haiphong in North Vietnam. On several occasions, their recon planes were spotted and even pursued by the enemy, but the American fighter jets supporting their mission encouraged them to stay away.
40 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
“They tried maybe a half dozen times to come after us, but eventually, they forgot about it because they were at risk of getting shot themselves,” Cash says. “It was dangerous, but we had the advantage because our technology was vastly superior.” He later returned stateside and served as a mission planner on the highly classified Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird,” a long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ aircraft designed to conduct strategic reconnaissance. The aircraft was retired in the late 1980s, but still holds the world record set in 1976 as the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft ever built. One of his final assignments was serving as a security coordinator for the Department of Defense at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, where he witnessed the United States hockey team’s shocking victory over the heavily favored Soviet Union—later immortalized as the “Miracle on Ice.” “It was something,” he recalls. “It was incredible, it really was. Then, I saw them win the gold medal by beating Finland.” Cash retired from the service in 1981 and began a second career in business and as a financial adviser. He and his wife, Betty, moved to the West Coast in 2002 to be closer to family, and settled in Canby in 2005. “I had a good career,” Cash says. “I can’t really say anything negative about my service. You showed up, you worked hard, and when you did a good job you got the appreciation of your superior: Mission accomplished.”

LEGAL MATTERS
REIF & HUNSAKER, P.C.
So you have to file a Lawsuit. What court do you use? NOBODY WANTS TO FILE A LAWSUIT. They are, at best, expensive and time-consuming, and there is rarely a guarantee of a win. Nonetheless, they are an important part of dispute resolution in America and are sometimes necessary. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to file a civil lawsuit, one of first things you need to consider is which court to use. SMALL CLAIMS – Small Claims courts are limited jurisdiction courts that can hear and decide a specific list of disputes. While each county has its own Small Claims court rules and procedures, all Oregon counties require that cases under $750 go to Small Claims court. Cases over $10,000 cannot go to Small Claims court, and must go to Circuit Court. It is important to note that Small Claims court cannot award any relief other than damages (money). So, for example, if someone took your dog, the Small Claims court could award you the value of the dog if you win, but could not order the other party to return the dog to you.
CIRCUIT COURT – The Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction meaning it can hear and decide almost all disputes. This is what most people think of when they think of going to “court”. For Marion County, that means the courthouse in Salem, or for Clackamas, the courthouse in Oregon City. The Circuit Court can handle all cases over $50,000, or cases with lower amounts which require injunctive or equitable relief.
“Any case between $750 and $50,000 which is filed in the Circuit Court will be referred to Arbitration. This is to help expedite cases and get them resolved more quickly.”
CIRCUIT COURT ARBITRATION – Any case between $750 and $50,000 filed in the Circuit Court will be referred to Arbitration. This is to help expedite cases and get them resolved more quickly. These cases follow the formalities of regular Circuit Court, but never have juries and often use licensed attorneys as the “judge” or decision-maker. They sometimes use retired judges. Like small claims courts, circuit court arbitration cannot award any relief other than damages (money) – that is, no injunctive relief or equitable remedies. If a party doesn’t like the result of their arbitration, they may appeal it to the Circuit Court and start over. 44 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
COURT OF APPEALS AND SUPREME COURT – These courts review the decisions of the lower courts when one of the parties believes a mistake has been made. The Court of Appeals must hear/decide all cases which are appealed to it, but the Supreme Court does not. The Supreme Court selects those cases which it believes need further clarification or explanation. With very limited exceptions, no cases start in these courts.
LUBA , TRIBAL COURTS – Oregon also has some specialized courts, such as Tribal Courts which hear matters unique to tribal areas, or LUBA, the Land Use Board of Appeals, which is a special court that handles appeals of land use decisions. FEDERAL COURTS – Federal court jurisdiction is limited to certain types of cases listed in the U.S. Constitution. For the most part, federal court jurisdictions only hear cases in which the United States is a party, cases involving violations of the Constitution or federal law, crimes on federal land, and bankruptcy cases. Federal courts can also hear cases between two parties involving state law if the parties are from different states and the amount in controversy is over $75,000. For All Your Flag, Flagpole, Banner & Kite Needs!
Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners. “The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’” Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks. Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls. Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s. Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes its
own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross. “We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom quality flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a championship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.” Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh. Elmer’s selection of kites, flags, banners, weather vanes, wind spinners and other wind toys will amaze you. Looking to spruce up your home’s exterior? Stop into the retail store at 1332 NE Broadway in Portland, Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Or visit their website, elmersflag.com anytime.

The party will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Canby Music, 590 Northwest 2nd Avenue, to coincide with the 14th anniversary of the store. Family, friends, and community members of all ages are welcome to enjoy kid-friendly fun, free food, tours of the store, and other goodies. “It’s a good time,” Canby Music owner Brian Haines said. “We’ll have a huge block party with a bouncy house, hamburgers, hot

dogs and soft drinks. Live music on the porch, performed by all the people who work here and a lot of our friends.” The yearly anniversary celebration is something Haines started when he first opened Canby Music at its original location in June 2008, but the tradition lapsed after a while. He and the team brought the idea back last year at the new store, and it was a huge hit. “We had really good turnout, better than we expected, and everybody had a good time so we decided to do it again,” Haines said. Canby Music is located at 590 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. For more information, call 503-263-2263 or visit canbymusic.com.

COLTON CAFE
Historic Colton Café: Cool Summer Events By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer
L
ooking for outdoor entertainment this summer? Head on over to the Colton Café for one or more of their hosted concerts, dance parties, or family-fun nights. These events are open to the public and include free admission and parking. Check out the flyer insert for a complete list of events, dates and times, and band schedules. This historic family diner, as owner Nora Nofziger puts it, “has been the pulse of this community for 72 years.” The café’s slogan, “In the Heart of Colton,” speaks of the community itself, as well as the café’s location in the town. Wanting to do something unique for the locals who have enjoyed and supported the café over the years, Nora came up with the idea of a summer music bash. The first in the series of Historic Colton Café’s Cool Summer Events will take place June 18th, recognizing the 1st year anniversary weekend of Nora taking over as the café’s owner. A total of four concerts will be held, one each month from June through September, as well as two 80s dance parties led by DJ Gil for people 21 and over. Dance party attendees are invited to come dressed in their favorite 80s garb and matching hairdos. Family-fun nights, beginning at 5:00 pm and lasting till 8:00 pm, are scheduled for July 31st and Aug 21st. All events will take place outdoors. Concertgoers may want to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.
(Please avoid any items that may block your neighbor’s view.) Food and drink will be made available at all events, including alcohol for those of legal age. Kicking off the concerts (scheduled to go from 3:00-9:30 pm) will be Dennis Stafford, The Singing Cowboy. Dennis is wellknown to the local community, having performed in the café for the last 35 years. Other bands in the line-up will represent a variety of genres, and a tribute band covering Neil Young/ Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Creedence Clearwater Revival will be featured. When asked who the café used to book these bands, Nora responded, “I put it on a Facebook post and got referrals— people were saying, ‘Oh, I know these people.’” Nora is so excited to share her summer nights at the café with the community that she plans to make the Cool Summer Events an annual occurrence. “It’s going to be fun!” she says. The Colton Café is located at 21038 S Hwy 211 in Colton. Free parking is across the street at the fire station, or at the high school. For more information contact Nora at (503) 824-5111.

SEASONAL
SUMMER CINEMA
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986): PG-13
“Nobody leaves my cheese in the wind.” Hands down this is one of my all-time favorites which I constantly quote. It’s the story of a high school senior who takes a “skip day” for a grand adventure with his friend and girlfriend. Directed and written by John Hughes, and like all of his movies, it’s quirky, funny, colorful, cinematic, musical, philosophical, and honest. Matthew Broderick steals the show as he dances and sings and jokes across the screen; Alan Ruck, who plays his best friend, is a hilarious hypochondriac sidekick; and Mia Sara, who plays the girlfriend, is funny and incredibly sharp. And really, no character is wasted: the jealous sister, the goofy secretary, the oblivious parents, the high school students, the parking garage attendants. But let us not forget the petty and pointless Principal Ed Rooney, played by Jeffrey Jones, to whom the above quote belongs, who lights up every scene. It’s quintessentially 80s, larger-than-life, absurd, and it has the legendary 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider, which famously soars the Chicago streets when stolen by the parking garage attendants. A must-see for summer!
Disney-Pixar’s Luca (2021): G
“It’s just the greatest thing that humans ever made, the Vespa!” Like most new Disney-Pixar movies, Luca doesn’t disappoint. It’s utter eye candy, a gorgeous film to watch. Taking place in a fictional 1950s Italian Riviera, with director Enrico Casarosa drawing from his very own childhood, Luca feels like a summer period-piece: it’s classic, warm, relaxed, tropical, and yet somehow boundless, stretching like the blue-green sea. The movie is a coming-of-age story following the title character, Luca, a boy seamonster who wants nothing more than to visit and explore the human village of Portorosso. Luca and his best friend, Alberto, also a sea-monster, befriend a kind human named Giulia, and proceed to have that type of unforgettable summer you only experienced as a kid. Interestingly enough, like Brave and Frozen, there’s no love interest! But there is bromance, and it’s wonderful to watch. There’s also Vespas, bicycle races, fishing, swimming, and all kinds of meditation on identity and accepting who you are. Great for the whole family! 64 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
The Sandlot
(1993): PG
I think everyone has heard the quote “you’re killing me, smalls,” but maybe you don’t know it’s from this movie! Probably one of the best kids’ baseball movies ever, The Sandlot is a time machine into the summer of 1962 and the simpler times of childhood: monster dogs, making new friends, pretty girls, and the sublime sound of a wooden bat cracking a baseball. The movie follows a new kid in town who joins a pickup baseball team who plays in the “sandlot,” and their mental state and inventory of baseballs is completely dependent on The Beast, a mysterious and terrifying monster dog who lives behind the fence. It’s one of those boys-will-be-boys movies: sun-kissed summer days, riding bikes in the streets, occasional swearing, pretty lifeguards, running from scary dogs, and mysterious neighbors behind fences. Better for slightly older kids due to language and The Beast, The Sandlot is a great movie for a lazy summer afternoon.
Grease
(1978): PG-13
“Tell me about it, stud.” Grease is iconic, pure and simple, and a movie musical that follows high school seniors in their final year before they graduate. Loaded with nostalgic 1950s Americana, there’s leather jackets, PINK!, blue jeans, bouffants and pompadours, dancing and rock and roll, smoking and fighting, high school cliques, and hot rods. After a crazy and unlikely summer fling between Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), they realize they go to the same school and now must reconcile how different they are. Not wholly dissimilar to Romeo and Juliet if you think about it, they’re driven apart by their friends and social roles, but like the doomed couple they just can’t stay apart. It’s funny, whimsical, spectacular, but also deals with the serious issues faced by teenagers: rebellion, love and romance, friendship, drugs and alcohol, violence and mortality. Not appropriate for small children, Grease is a classic nonetheless and a great summer flick!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
BLOOMIN’ BLINDS
SAY YES! By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer
During her interview with Bloomin’ Blinds, she remembers thinking, “This is perfect!” They offered company support and already had all major marketing pieces in place. They also provided leads and a quality website. Lindsay bought her franchise at the end of October 2020, and started selling blinds January 2021, after receiving her Oregon CCB license.
L
indsay Krinke, who owns and operates Bloomin’ Blinds South Portland franchise, just said, “Yes!” She had been laid off from her job, and a mere two days later the COVID-19 pandemic began, changing life as we knew it. Lindsay, as fate would have it, had just finished reading a book about “saying yes to everything.” So, taking that to heart, she approached her job search with a newfound perspective. Having been in commercial lighting for “several decades,” Lindsay noticed that a lot had changed within the industry—it had become more corporate and less family-oriented. Convinced that she needed to widen her job search, she decided to apply for everything that looked like it had potential, and say “yes” to everything until it became a “no.” Although Lindsay had never entertained the idea of owning her own business, she said “yes” to the prospect when she was approached by a woman via LinkedIn. After completing a “fascinating process” which focused on Lindsay’s personal working strengths and what she “did and didn’t like in business,” the results came back with 3 small business owner opportunities—one in lighting, Bloomin’ Blinds, and a third that was a qualified “no.”
66 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
What sets Bloomin’ Blinds apart in Lindsay’s mind is their full-service model. In addition to sales, they do installation and service, including repairs. - BUILDING COMMUNITY TAKE ACTION
Peace and Conflict Resolution and Prevention Rotarians Work For Peace Canby Rotary Club recently was designated as a “Peacebuilder Club”. Rotarians have become more aware this past two years of the interrelationship of all the people of the world. The Canby Community Summit held last fall brought together about 75 community members for the purpose of strengthening peaceful and productive relationships. The Summit was the beginning of several projects aimed at building peace. ShelterBox is an emergency response team who provides humanitarian relief in the form of equipment and materials that bring shelter, warmth, and dignity to people affected by natural and other disasters worldwide. Canby Rotary continues to support international aid efforts by making a $1,000 donation to purchase one kit or “shelterbox” each year. Recently, emergency kits were sent to Poland and Ukraine to assist people who have become homeless during the military conflict. Ukrainian Refugee Relief supplies were delivered by Rotarians from Portland who represented Canby Rotary Club members and Rotarians from 20 other clubs who donated a total of $150,000 toward reducing the suffering and basic needs of women, children, and elderly people displaced by the war in Ukraine. The report back from these representatives and the photographs of the situation were touching and reinforced the idea that each of us can make a difference in our community and the world when we work together.
A new Peace Pole was placed in front of the Canby Fire District in April. The dedication ceremony drew about 25 people who support the sentiment, “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. The four languages on the peace pole are English, Spanish, French, and Japanese. The peace pole project was started in 1983 in Japan, and it has spread throughout the world. Currently, there are more than 200,000 peace poles in about 200 countries. Rotary supports peaceful efforts around the world through service projects, graduate studies by an international community of Peace Fellows, and community education. These actions address the underlying causes of conflict including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. About $150 million have been dedicated directly to these efforts by Rotarians around the world. Peace Poles dedicated by Canby Rotary are located at the Canby Public Library and Civic Center; Canby High School; Canby Police Department; and now, at the Canby Fire District. We are all hopeful that peace may prevail on earth.
Community service focused on youth is important to Canby Rotary and is central to the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” which means unselfish volunteer service.

CLUB OF CANBY
Y
ROTARIANS: PEOPLE OF ACTION Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.
Rotarians Are People of Action Reading Rotarians is part of the Canby Canby Rotarians joined with other community members to participate in the Canby High School Mock Interviews in May. One of the objectives of Rotary International is to serve others through their vocation by providing opportunities for young people to understand business and professions. The Canby High School Mock Interview program is a capstone experience of the Future Focus class which includes selfunderstanding, exploration of vocations, preparation of a resume, and preparation for a job interview. Students are Sophomore and Junior class members. Students prepare a letter to thank interviewers for their time and feedback. One student wrote in her letter, “What I found most interesting about the interview was how I could ask questions about the business while the interviewer asked me about myself.” Another wrote, “The interview was meaningful for me because I could see what is expected in an actual job interview.”
Rotary Literacy program. This year books were purchased and presented to students in Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grades at Lee and Trost Elementary Schools. Each of the nearly 450 books are presented to a student to encourage them to read and to share the love of reading for pleasure with their family and friends. Titles include “Green is a Chile Pepper”, “Eerie Elementary: The School is Alive”, and “Pete the Cat and the Cool Caterpillar”. Canby School District received a donation of $1500 in May for library books in the name of speakers at Rotary Club meetings and in the name of each of the club members. These funds will be used to purchase about 120 books to add to the library for all student to enjoy. The literacy of our students is very important to the future of our community and nation. Community service is central to the Rotary motto Service Above Self which mean unselfish volunteer service.
SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
There are two types of leaders in life.
Leaders who serve themselves and leaders who serve others. Last night I watched a group of 15 leaders who met to discuss Rotary scholarships for young people headed toward higher education. They had already invested many hours in a thorough and technology supported review process to fairly distribute over $48,000 in scholarships and they were making their final decisions to inspire life-long learners. I am so proud of Canby Rotary members who served to change lives in Canby in the last 12 months. We gathered 75 Canby community leaders to begin a conversation about the value of peace in our community. We hosted our first annual Daddy Daughter Dance for over 300 people in Canby and the smiles were heartmelting. We are purchasing 20 new generators and 10 new chainsaws plus an educational initiative to assist our community in emergency preparedness. Canby Rotary Ready will be a multi-year project that ensures we are ready for wildfire, ice, earthquake or whatever our community faces. If you are weary of watching a crumbling world, why not do something about it? Rotarians are leading the way in service today and tomorrow. Come and join the ten other new Canby Rotarians who joined our club this year! Got questions? We have answers. Be a Rotarian and Serve to Change lives,

DICK’S CANBY FORD
EVs & Custom Trucks By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto

ick’s Canby Ford has been rapidly growing and expanding! They’re delving deeper into the EV market, and have added a selection of custom up-fitted Rangers and F-150s to their inventory. Moreover, they are very excited to work with their new neighbors up the road—Dick’s Auto Group recently acquired the Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership in Wilsonville. Staying abreast of the market in these ever-changing times, Dick’s Canby Ford finds that many customers prefer to order their new vehicles. Citing less inventory to choose from (on a nation-wide basis), this process affords clients more flexibility to customize, and therefore get, a more optimal package to suit their needs. If you are ordering a new vehicle, however, you’ll need to plan ahead. Due to the current market conditions and depending on what you’ve ordered, it can take up to 8-10 weeks (longer for some models) before you can drive your new vehicle home. No worries, though—Dick’s Canby Ford has your back! They’re offering a $1000 incentive for all custom orders placed at their dealership—“that way you get the vehicle you want and you get to save a little money in the meantime,” General Manager, Shaun Weber, points out. EVs (electric vehicles) have been generating their share of high interest at Dick’s Canby Ford. The newly released Ford Lightning truck (ordered and coming your way) will be available at the dealership to test drive—pretty exciting, for sure! Another electric vehicle causing quite a stir is the Mustang Mach-E SUV. The popularity of this model has found it a bit scarce in 2022, so if you envision a Mach-E in your future, be sure to order ahead for 2023. Dick’s Canby Ford also offers factory-built up-fitted Ford Rangers and F-150s. These well-equipped, great looking, fully

CANBY SOFTBALL:
PLAY BALL By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
The signs that the Canby Cougar softball team could be special this year came early. And no, I’m not talking about the Cougs’ 10-0 dismantling of Ridgeview, the fifth- or sixth-best team in the state, in their second game of the season — though that was impressive. No, head coach Ty Kraft saw the signs years ago, when he was coaching many of the girls who are on the Canby High School team now to state championships with the Canby Rebels club team. Kraft, a former three-sport athlete at Canby High School and allstate first-teamer in football, coached the Rebels to three straight state championships from 2016 to 2018.
Standout pitcher Abigail Loomis made sure Newberg would have to work for their runs. After the Tigers got two runners on base with no outs in the second inning, Loomis struck out two batters and then set up an easy infield fly to preserve the shutout.
But even he might have been a little surprised when the Cougs won 13 of their first 15 games this season, including an astonishing 10-game win streak that wound through part of the brutally competitive Three Rivers League.
The Cougars took advantage of the silent Tiger bats, incrementally scooting away from their opponents one run at a time. Carroll increased the lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning with a grounder that brought Kaylee Allen home.
Don’t Be Upset
No recap of the 2022 Canby softball season would be complete without the Cougs’ stunning victory over the Newberg Tigers at home. The Tigers had lost only one game and were ranked No. 1 in the state. The Cougs, four games into what would eventually become a 10-game winning streak, were just starting to turn heads.
As Loomis continued to deal strikes that the Tigers couldn’t seem to touch, Carroll delivered the knockout shot of the day in the top of the seventh: a two-run homer that brought home Bree Marino and gave the Cougars a commanding 5-1 lead. Loomis finished the day with a strikeout to give Canby their biggest win of the year.
Rest In Peace
Canby had been no stranger to top-ranked opponents, having played three opponents ranked in the top 11 so far — No. 3 Bend, No. 8 McMinnville, and No. 11 South Medford — but a victory over Oregon’s top-ranked team would certainly be a feather in their cap.
Tragedy struck later in the season, as the Canby softball team, along with the greater athletic and school communities, mourned the loss of former first-team all-state infielder Alissa Netter, who died suddenly in late April 2022 at the age of 51.
The Cougars looked comfortable to start the game, as star junior Ava Carroll, one of the state’s best hitters, got to first base on a leadoff bunt to start the day. Just three pitches later, Natalie Just brought Carroll home with a double to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Netter, née Meeuwsen, led a talented Canby softball program that ran the Three Rivers League in the late 1980s, helping lay the groundwork for the Cougs’ state title run five years later — the first in any girls’ sport in school history. Netter later was a beloved secretary at Canby High School and a staunch supporter of Cougar athletics. Her own children — two sets of twins — went on to star in several sports.
Though Tiger Serayah Neiss finished the inning with three straight outs, a wild pitch allowed Just to scamper home. After one inning and five batters, the Cougars led 2-0 against the top-ranked team in the state.
Kraft and the Canby softball team honored Netter and her contributions to the community with a brief ceremony before the May 4 Lakeridge game, which the Cougars won in dramatic fashion (see below). “She was just a huge supporter of Canby athletics,” Kraft said. “We’ve been talking to the team about the type of player she was and how we can best represent and honor her. She was a fierce competitor in athletics and in life. She was not afraid of anything, but she was always a great person to work with.” The team honored Netter and her number — 12 — in other ways the rest of the season, including wearing stickers bearing the number on their batting helmets and celebrating base hits by holding up one finger on one hand and two on the other to form a 12.

A Stunning Steal The Cougars came into the game badly needing a win, having suffered through their longest — and, to that point, only — losing streak of the season (three games), including a 10-0 drubbing at the hands of the new No. 1 team, Tigard. But both the Cougars and Pacers struggled to get things going on the field. Neither team was able to strangle away the lead for the first six innings. Canby managed to get runners on base — including stranding Loomis and Madi Bigej in the second inning — but were unable to drive them home. Meanwhile, the Pacers had the opposite problem: With Loomis dealing 15 strikeouts in the game, they weren’t getting on base at all. After the Cougars failed to score in the seventh, Loomis trotted back out into extra innings and continued right where she left off. The senior struck out the side with an immaculate inning; incredibly, all nine pitches Loomis threw in the eighth were strikes. In fact, Canby’s ace struck out eight of the last nine batters she faced. Bolstered by this incredible pitching, Kraft and his staff knew they could take risks. And when the cards were perfectly aligned, they took that chance. Carroll singled to begin the inning, then advanced to second on another single from Kenna Kraft. After the Pacers picked up their second out, Carroll made it to third thanks to a Loomis walk. With Kaylee Allen up to bat and two outs on the board, the coaches sent Carroll to steal home.
“When Coach told me to steal home, I felt excited and confident because I knew the decision would win the game,” Carroll said. “While running home, I was a little nervous but my confidence was through the roof.” Carroll sprinted home, passing the unaware Lakeridge catcher and winning the game for the Cougars. While not an officially recorded statistic, walk-off steals are known to be one of the rarest events in baseball or softball. Only 35 major league games have ended with a runner stealing home — and just two have occurred since 1980. With the playoffs just around the corner, the Canby Cougars have proven they can handle adversity and win in a variety of ways. Anything can happen as the Cougs continue to enjoy one of their best seasons in many years.

BBQ Tips:
Food, Fire, and Fun! By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
1. Know Your Grill
6. Raw vs. Cooked
You need to know your grill inside and out, because every grill is different. Read the manual! And take it slow and safe.
It’s important to keep raw and cooked food on separate plates. Unless you and your guests want salmonella. In my experience, ample counter or table space is key. And helpers too!
2. Fuel Unless you have a magic grill, it requires a fuel source. Make sure you’ve got a full tank of propane, a full bag of charcoal briquettes, or wood pellets, and extras won’t hurt either. Generally gas is fast and less flavorful, and charcoal is slow and more flavorful.
7. Heat Zones
3. Metal Utensils
8. Keep Water Away
This might be rather obvious, but plastic utensils will melt, so metal utensils are essential. This includes a grill brush for cleaning up afterward.
4. Oil the Grate Like frying pans, grills need oil to keep food from sticking. Before turning on the grill, oil up a paper towel with cooking oil and rub it on the grate. If the grill is already on (oops), you can use tongs to hold the paper towel.
5. Heat the Grill After starting your grill, you need to wait for the grill and grate to heat up for even cooking and to avoid chemical flavors in your food. For charcoal grills, wait a solid 10 minutes minimum for the lighter fluid to dissipate, and the charcoal needs to mostly be ashy gray.
80 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
Different food requires different temperatures, right? It’s ideal to have one section for searing (like steaks) and another section for low to medium heat (like chicken). But do your best to remember which is which! So you added too much lighter fluid a la Homer Simpson and you start to panic. Don’t add water! Cover the grill with the lid to cut off the air flow, which will usually kill the fire, or close the vents. On a gas grill, you can conveniently turn down the temperature and close the lid.
9. Quick Tips Burgers: flip once the blood pools on top, and flip only once! Chicken: use low heat, turning often. Pork and beef: use high heat to sear, flip 2-4 times, and let it rest. Veggies: wrap in foil! Flavor: dry rubs, wet rubs, sauces, meat seasoning, spices, use something and follow the directions on the label! Or look up one of thousands of recipes online.

ollege H.U.N.K.S. Hauling Junk and Moving Happy Valley, which provides stress-free solutions for moving and junk-hauling needs, is the east-side franchise that opened up in September of 2021. With their home office located in Oregon City, this College H.U.N.K.S. franchise services the east-side of the Portland-Metro area. “It’s pretty much in the name,” franchise owner Scott Lane says of his business’s range of services. “When people sell their houses, one of two things happen. They either need to move everything, or they move what they want out and the rest is junk. We take care of both: your stuff and your junk.” While the “H.U.N.K.S.” part of their name may lead some to speculate that it’s a description of their employees, it is in fact an acronym for “Honest Uniformed Nice Knowledgeable Service.” The College H.U.N.K.S. mission aims to go above and beyond what you would normally expect from your typical moving and junk removal company, and works to provide exceptional service that leaves clients feeling satisfied and taken care of. We just want to provide the best service for our clients.” The real estate market is red-hot right now, with many folks looking to sell their houses and seek opportunities elsewhere, with many more eyeing a new home in the Beaver State. “We’re slammed right now,” Scott admits with a laugh. “There’s a lot of demand. And a lot of people turn to us because we have so many really great partners in the area, from Realtors to property managers to long-term care facilities.” The Happy Valley College H.U.N.K.S. franchise currently has about nine employees and is always looking for new team members (one need not be in college or college-age to apply.) DAN REED NETWORK
Let’s Hear It For The Dan Reed Network By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
T
he portrait of the man, Dan Reed, is that of an artist; of a soul with profound depth, spirituality, and steadfast integrity. Looking back on a professional musical career which spans almost 4 decades, one might consider such attributes to be among his greatest strengths,
particularly in an industry which doesn’t always champion such things. Unfortunately, such attributes could also perhaps be considered his greatest obstacles to reaching the greater success he and his “Network” so genuinely deserved. As the reunited Dan Reed Network prepares to unleash their newest album (their 11th) to an eager public, I had the unique opportunity to speak with the man behind the curtain. It all began from a very young age for Dan, and rock and roll was the name of the game. Bands like Cheap Trick, Kiss, Triumph, and Rush were all the rage, and they sparked in him an early fascination with music. Like so many of us, he started playing an instrument in school: the trumpet, and it didn’t provide him with much in the way of inspiration. It wasn’t until he heard Van Halen’s “Running with the Devil” on the radio that he ditched the trumpet and picked up the guitar. And so began his journey to rock stardom. In 1987, after getting signed to Polygram, the Dan Reed Network (also consisting of Dan Pred on drums, Brion James on guitar, Melvin Brannon on bass, and Blake Sakamoto on keyboards) released their first self-titled album Dan Reed Network to wide critical acclaim. Their first single, “Ritual,” was a huge hit which reached #38 on the Billboard Top 100. They had the looks, they had the sound—a unique blend of rock riffage, heavy funk grooves, and pop sensibility—they had it all! Two more albums followed, Slam in ‘89, and The Heat in ‘91. The writing on each progressive album was stronger, the production more accurate in capturing the magic of their live 86 · FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION, CALL 503.825.2111
sound. The band was growing in popularity in Europe, but here in the states things were coming apart at the seams. There were a multitude of factors, but mainly it came down to their label struggling to properly promote the band. Essentially, the Dan Reed Network was ahead of their time. They effortlessly
blended multiple genres of music into an infectious and often majestic tapestry of sound, but it was ultimately too difficult to categorize for mass consumption. Dan became disillusioned with the industry and put the band on hiatus. He refused to surrender his integrity and refused to “sell out,” and so the band lay dormant for almost 20 years. In 2012, they came together for a one-time-only New Year’s Eve show, but that led to further shows and even some new recordings. Now, as we edge out from under the grasp of the pandemic, we are about to receive the newest product of the band’s labor. It’s the first album they’ve ever written together as a band, with every member contributing (including newest member, Rob Daiker on keyboards), and they are ecstatic to share the results. The album is called Let’s Hear it for the King, and if the first couple of singles, “Starlight” and “Pretty Karma” are any indication, it’s going to be a scorcher. “Starlight” is especially catchy with great hooks, poignant timely lyrics, and a rollercoaster of a video! The Dan Reed Network is reunited and reinvigorated, back in the saddle, and prepared to give fans a fresh dose of what only they can produce: the tastiest grooves, smoothest licks, and the sweetest melodies to ever come out of Portland. And this time it’s on their own terms. Long-term fans: let’s drop in the new disc, crank it to 11, and “We’ll cruise together”! Dan Reed Network’s latest album Let’s Hear It For The King has a release date of Friday June 17th. Pre-order the album from danreednetwork.tmstor.es/

HISTORY
CANBY’S POLICE HISTORY
THE BEAT GOES ON By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
One of the first appointments made by the Canby City Council immediately following the city’s incorporation was to name a Police Chief — though the department certainly had humble beginnings. Indeed, the city struggled mightily in its early years to keep a Police Chief on the payroll, though this was likely due in no small part to the thinness of the municipal balance sheet: The city’s first top cops were compensated a paltry $1 a month. When lighting new street lamps and repairing sidewalks became part of the job in 1895, the salary rose to $4 per month, and turnover decreased. Hey — whatever works. A hundred years or so ago, it was common for the Canby Police Chief to wear multiple hats. C.E. Bowman, who was Chief from 1907 to 1909, was also the city’s Water Superintendent. For his troubles in both posts, he earned $68 a month and was “to be available for duty at any hour of day, or night or Sundays,” according to a newspaper article. Canby’s unusually wide downtown streets were famously designed to be roomy enough for a wagon and full team of oxen to turn around in — something town founder Philander Lee and his son Albert ensured by laying out the city’s first 24 blocks using their own team of oxen in 1870.

But a generation later, the city and its budding police force would grapple with a new scourge which Philander had never contemplated: the automobile. By 1915, speeding had become a big problem in Canby — though the limit in those days was a near-glacial 10 miles per hour — and Police Chief Sisser was called to appear before the City Council that June and hammer out a solution. Evidently, speed limit signs were a new idea back then, and the Chief was given the authority to “erect several notices at various approaches to the city warning speeders of the rate they would be allowed to make while in the city limits,” according to a newspaper article. “Mr. Sisser said he had already warned a number of local persons who have been observed frequently to have exceeded the limit,” the Herald recorded. “The council instructed him to nab anybody, local or foreign, whom he caught exceeding the rate of 10 miles per hour within the city limits and see that they get their desserts.”

The salary for Canby Police Chief soared to a flush $180 a year in 1916, though it’s unclear if this was due to a flood of revenue pouring in from speeders blazing through town at 15 or 20 miles an hour. The raise apparently did little to buoy the spirits of a notoriously prickly Police Chief, L.H. Bowman, who chillingly posted the following notice to pet owners in 1918.
“During the vacation months, the officer has been using the soft pedal and it seems that people have been taking advantage of his good nature,”the Herald recorded of the meeting. “But in the future, it is announced, any infraction of the ordinance will draw one of these little cards for the first offense, and for the second offense it will be different.” A tragedy was miraculously avoided in February 1928, when Salem resident Mel Kloster, who had been visiting relatives in Barlow, started to drive toward Canby one morning, blissfully unaware of the fact that his 2-year-old had hitched a ride. Clinging to his car’s running board, the youngster held on for nearly a mile before dropping to the street, where a motorist coming the opposite way saw him and picked him up. The child was dropped off at a doctor’s office in Aurora, where his mother soon found him after a brief, frantic search. “The infant, it is said, was cut and bruised considerably,” newspapers reported, “but more frightened than injured.” “To all owners of dogs in the city of Canby, please take notice: No dogs are allowed to run at large in the city, and this is to notify you that dogs found running loose will be taken up by me and killed. If you want to keep a dog, keep him under chain, or on your own premises. This notice is final.” Yikes! During Prohibition, a Canby man by the name of A. Collins was stopped in town for reckless driving — though his troubles were just beginning. After the constable placed him in jail on February 10, 1921, Sheriff William J. Wilson and his deputies raided the man’s home to find five gallons of illegal moonshine, 40 gallons of mash, and a quantity of other kinds of liquor.
Following Lent was August Rothenberg, a respected and straightlaced cop in his mid-60s who also served as a City Councilman. It was during his tenure in February 1936 that Canby — by a razor-thin, 19-vote margin — approved a plan to build a city hall, with room for a police station and fire vehicles, and funding provided through the Works Progress Administration.
(CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE)
Collins was charged with possession of intoxicating liquor, as was his partner, A. Silva, whom The Oregonian described only as “a blind man.” Though Prohibition-era moonshine is often associated with causing blindness, this is largely an old wives’ tale. A seriously screwed-up batch of shine could cause blindness — as could consuming any liquid containing dangerous quantities of methanol — but the worst after-effects of moonshine were more likely to be regret and a seriously bad hangover. At any rate, we can only speculate as to the cause of Silva’s blindness in 1921. Continuing the rich tradition of chiefs who made a habit of wearing multiple hats, Police Chief Louis Lent became Canby’s top cop in 1924 while continuing to serve as Superintendent of Light and Water. Lent must not have minded the heavy workload; he remained a city employee for 23 more years. A marked change from the intense Bowman, Lent was known for being a good-natured sort, especially when it came to traffic matters. His leniency didn’t always sit well with the City Council, who called him out on the matter in September 1931 and instructed him to begin using printed cards to warn offending motorists of their traffic infractions — a precursor to the dreaded speeding ticket of modern day. HISTORY: CANBY POLICE ... continued
The old city hall, police, and fire stations are still standing today, of course, and form the heart of the historic Canby Civic Block in downtown Canby. One of the most colorful episodes of Chief Rothenberg’s career also occurred in 1936, when the city’s then-Fire Chief, Fred Larson, was called on the carpet of a Canby City Council meeting to answer for a multitude of issues. According to one Councilor, a Mr. Hornig, Larson was said to be “in the habit of becoming intoxicated from time to time,” and he demanded that the Fire Chief step down. “Asked to speak for himself, Larson said he had never been drunk at any time when driving the hose truck, or any other time in recent years,” the Herald recorded. “He said he would not promise not to take a drink of liquor if he felt so disposed.” But Chief Rothenberg pushed back hard, claiming he “could furnish positive proof that Larson was drunk Sunday night, and was not in fit condition to drive the fire truck if he had been called upon to answer a fire alarm.” Fire Chief Larson informed the council he was ready to tender his resignation at any time, and in fact, they “may consider that my resignation is on the table right now.” The resignation was not accepted, however, with the council evidently feeling like the tongue lashing was sufficient. Instead, it was Rothenberg who would soon step down as Chief of Police on July 21, 1939, due to failing health. He died four days later at the age of 70.

After years of employing part-time Chiefs who held multiple responsibilities in local government, the city went in the other direction in 1952, declining to replace the retiring James F. Hudson and going four years without any Police Chief at all. Instead, the city’s small force of two to three officers reported directly to the City Council. Lloyd D. Younce was re-appointed Chief of Police with a salary of $325 a month in July 1956. He had served before as Chief and Patrolman before changing careers briefly to sell automobiles for Eversole Motors. In 1970, a young officer by the name of Gerald “Jerry” Giger joined the force, marking the start of a long and momentous period for the Canby Police Department. His grandfather, Jacob A. Giger, was a City Councilman in the 1930s and the first to drive a motorized delivery wagon in Canby. After 10 years on the streets, Giger was sworn in as Chief of Police on October 1, 1980, where he would spend 21 years as the longest-tenured chief in Canby history. As if that weren’t enough, he joined the ranks of the neighboring Molalla Police Department, where he served another To get a supply of Blue Bags with decade as Chief. the Meow Village account label
