CELEBRATING 120 YEARS Decade of the Month: 1910-1919
A New Name In the early years of DirectLink, the cooperative operated as the Macksburg Mutual Telephone Association, named for the rural area just south of Canby where it all began. However, after agreeing to relocate switching equipment to Canby proper in 1905 and making the full move in 1907, members voted to change the name to Canby Exchange of Mutual Telephone Companies in 1911. This change reflected the multitude of smaller farmer lines that all made up the cooperative in Barlow, Canby, Central Point, Macksburg, Mundorf, Mill Creek, New Era, Oak Grove, Riverside, and Union Hall. The name was shortened in 1916 to Canby Cooperative Telephone Association.
Regulation Arrives At this point, telephone connectivity was booming – there were a multitude of other local cooperatives established in the early 20th century made up of rural party lines. With so many new service providers being established, regulation became necessary for what had become a public utility. The Railroad Commission regulatory agency was created in 1907 and soon extended to also include utilities and transportation regulation in 1911. Today, it is known as the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC), and it oversees electric utilities, natural gas, landline telephone service, internet, and some water companies.
Above: 1915 photo of a telephone installation
In 1918, the PUC ruled that each company needed to have Class of Service, meaning that telephone connections were required to have certain features and benefits for subscribers.
Mt. Angel Telephone Company During this decade, Mt. Angel Telephone Company (MATC) was born out of the need for a new provider in town, though it was still over a century away from joining forces with Canby. Residents that subscribed to one of the other two providers, Interurban Telephone Company and Marquam Mutual Telephone Associaton, couldn’t talk to each other if they weren’t on the same system. So, local dairy farmer Henry Berning convinced city leaders to start a new, independent telephone company. MATC was born March 26th, 1910. This goes to show that communications today wouldn’t have been possible without the early innovative thinking of local people working toward a common goal.

threats
That’s how many online threats were blocked by OMNI’s built-in security features in December. Security: one of the many reasons to love OMNI. To learn more about OMNI, call us, scan the QR code below, or go to DirectLink.coop/internet. Party lines were local telephone circuits that were shared by multiple subscribers. They were a much lower cost than an individual line, but there was a good chance of overhearing other people’s conversations. If you remember party lines, we’d love to hear your stories about them at DirectLink.coop/story.

A Big KISS for February PHOTO BY BARRY LEVINE
Junior high fascination begins life-long passion

I
wanted to start our Valentine’s issue off with a KISS. For those who know me, I’m a pretty big KISS fan and have been since I was 14. My KISS collection started by purchasing a record, two cassette tapes and an eight-track from the kid who’s locker was right next to mine in junior high. Little did I know how much this group would shape my life. In the ’80s, KISS had several videos released on MTV, and by then, they had removed their trademark makeup. But up to that point, I’d never heard songs by KISS when they still wore their makeup — for some reason, I thought they’d sound different. When I brought that first record home, I remember putting it on my parents’ record player and expecting demon screeching noises to come from the speakers. Instead, I heard good old-fashioned rock and roll. I was immediately hooked.
Over the next few years, I tried my best to find every record, cassette tape and CD that the band released — not an easy task as they have more than 30 albums. Some folks say KISS’s makeup was nothing but a gimmick to make them popular. But I disagree. Yes, it made them stand out and look different from everyone, but without songs that the public liked, nobody would have cared. This last December, KISS performed their final show in New York City — right where the band began back in 1973 That equals five decades of rocking and rolling all night, and partying everyday. Quite the accomplishment. Happy Valentine’s Day, Canby!

PAPPY’S GREASY SPOON
Time To Eat At Pappy’s A Canby tradition since 2002
M
By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
ike “Pappy” Merrill is known around town for being quite the character. He and his wife Lisa are just as woven into Canby’s fabric as the restaurant bearing his name. Just ask any of his regulars since he opened 22 years ago and they’ll tell you, “there’s no better place in town for a great home-cooked meal.” Pappy’s opened in 2002 inside of Canby Bowl. The restaurant’s name is a combination of a nickname (Pappy) Mike was given by his oldest son and the type of food joint which inspired him (greasy spoon). And it proved to be a catchy one! That, along with the delicious and generous portions he served helped the business take off. In 2011, the bowling alley closed and Pappy’s moved to their current location on 2nd Avenue, inside Holly Mall. The decor inside the restaurant can be described as 100% “Pappy.” Full to the brim with fun trinkets and memorabilia mostly given by patrons, the atmosphere reflects a certain “local” personality that’s not as common in bigger cities. Although Mike
8 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
originally hails from New Hampshire, he moved to Canby in 1993, a place he claimed was “just like home but without the snow.” After living here for three decades, he’s now considered a local and feels deeply connected to the Canby community. The town has supported him through some of his darkest times and he’s genuinely grateful, supporting the community in return. Of course, it all comes down to the food in the end, and that’s where Pappy’s really delivers! Open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Sunday, Pappy’s is THE place to go in Canby for delicious comfort food. Biscuits and gravy (a Pappy’s favorite and a secret recipe), chicken-fried steak, home-cooked potatoes, specialty sausages, homemade soups, real milkshakes — the list goes on. Breakfast is most popular and served all day, but they also have fantastic burgers, sandwiches and salads for lunch — all made with high-quality ingredients from local distributors for almost two decades. The New England clam chowder is a specialty (with Mike, of course, born in New England), but he takes pride in everything he serves. This is a true labor of love for Mike. Many dishes are named after people — Bob’s Best, the Smitty Smasher, Ozzie’s Obsession — because Pappy allows his regulars to help build the menu! These favorites were often requested and added to the permanent menu, named after their originator. For some who passed on, their memory is kept alive through food. If you aren’t yet one of Pappy’s regulars, you need to stop in and find out what has inspired such loyalty from his patrons. As Pappy himself is fond of saying, “If you’re buyin,’ I’m fryin’!” Support local businesses and find a new favorite “greasy spoon!” Pappy’s Greasy Spoon is located at 243 NW 2nd Avenue in Canby. Give them a call at (503)266-5452.

CONES
Frosty Fantasia Mix it up with custom soft-serve delights
W
By Angie Helvey, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
hen longtime residents Dori and Bill Leder made plans to open CONES in Canby, they were excited to introduce a new concept that had barely made its way to Oregon: custom soft serve featuring the Swirl Freeze Machine. The machine’s ability to smoothly combine real frozen fruit with ice cream is what initially impressed the couple, but the creative possibilities are endless. “People get a little crazy,” says Dori with a laugh. “It’s so fun, especially for the kids. They love making wacky combinations, like rainbow sherbet with Oreo.” CONES carries a selection of Umpqua ice cream flavors, any of which can be blended into soft serve with your choice of more than 30 mix-ins, including Pacific Northwest berries and a variety of cereal, cookies, candies, and sweet and salty snacks. Use your imagination, or if you’re looking for suggestions, choose from a menu of custom combos, such as the Mint Monster (vanilla ice cream with chocolate mint cookies, brownie bites, YORK Peppermint Pattie, Andes Chocolate Mint and chocolate hard shell) — or the Berry Cheesecake (vanilla ice cream with berries, cheesecake pieces and berry drizzle). Accessorize your creation with made-to-order waffle cones and waffle chips for dipping.

Craving more of a classic treat? Indulge in double scoops of hard ice cream or a custom milkshake, sundae, float or banana split. Dairyfree vanilla ice cream and limited gluten-free ice cream and mix-ins are available. CONES has also partnered with another local small business, B’s Bake Shoppe, to offer delicious ice cream cakes perfect for any occasion. Open since June 2023, CONES loves getting to know regulars and connecting over frozen treats. “One of our custom creations, the Marionberry Delight, is something a customer made up,” shares Dori. “It’s Marionberry soft-serve and Biscoff cookies with a caramel drizzle, and it’s amazing.” Dori’s biggest goal was to create a place where friends and family could gather. Located in historic downtown in the old City Hall, the shop features some indoor seating and a charming patio. “It’s so fun to see groups of girlfriends who hang out on the patio or the grandpas taking their grandkids for ice cream.” Dori and Bill have six children themselves, all involved in the business in some way, whether working in the store, making ice cream cakes, crafting gluten-free recipes or helping to dream up new flavor pairings for custom creations and seasonal specials. Kids are special guests at CONES: there’s even a pretend ice cream stand just their size! “We’re pretty used to spilled ice cream,” says Dori with a laugh. “Parents worry, but we always joke that we’ve got ice cream insurance.” That includes the famous “waffle cone pants,” an optional plastic sleeve to keep your ice cream from dripping down your front side. At CONES, try your hand at dreaming up a personalized frozen creation. Visit on Milkshake Mondays for $2 off your shake, or check out Tropical Tuesdays for a refreshing reminder of the coming summer months. CONES is located at 150 N. Holly St., Canby. BEAUTY TIPS
DIVINE COMPLEXIONS
My Invisalign Experience
New Trays — Each week, I threw out my old trays and put in new ones. I took them out when I ate food — be sure not to leave them where a dog can reach them! The key here is to wear your trays. It won’t work if you don’t use them.
Transform your smile and self-confidence
I
f you don’t have time to read this article — spoiler alert — it’s worth it. I believe feeling “divine” includes your smile. Since COVID and the subsequent non-stop video chatting, I really got a sense for how much my teeth and bite have changed. Having now completed the Invisalign® treatment and seeing how beautiful my smile is now, I can say it was absolutely worth it. I can now smile confidently with no hesitation. What is Invisalign? — Invisalign is an alternative to metal braces. The retainer-like clear liners adjust your teeth over time. How Did I Get Started? — I knew I didn’t want traditional braces again but had heard of Invisalign. My teenage son has braces with Senestraro Family Orthodontics in Wilsonville and I’ve been so happy with my experience there, so I thought of them for a free consultation.
Follow-Ups — You’ll have a checkup every couple months to ensure your teeth are tracking right. They may make adjustments and send you home with new liners.
Christine Lewy Licensed Esthetician
What Does It Feel Like? — Better than I Divine Complexions thought they would. I did have a little lisp Spa Owner in the beginning, but, hey, it was worth it, Award-Winning and I figured out how to talk with them. West Coast Glo Skin Beauty I also liked how others couldn’t Makeup Artist really notice them. There NW YUMI are some liners that cause Lashes Educator more change than others and so when I put a new one in for a day my teeth would ache, but I also liked that I could take out the liner if I desired. Removal — The attachments were removed and I received a final retainer to wear at night so my teeth won’t move back.
The Consult — First, you meet with the doctor; they take some photos of your teeth and show you your bite. They even made this plaster 3-D model, so I could see it in real time! They explain the process, the time commitment and the price. Another spoiler alert: They agreed to give me a special discount for my Divine community, so don’t hesitate to email me for that promo. Application — Invisalign is not like traditional braces, but attachment pieces are applied to a few of your teeth for the Invisalign to work and stay put. You’ll get a number of trays and learn when to change them.
Results — Impressive. It’s wild to think how a plastic liner over time can create a perfect smile, but it does! I wore them for a year and a half, but in my mind, a year was going to go by regardless. So if you’ve been wondering about Invisalign, I say do it! I’m happy I did! I can take photos and videos confidently knowing my smile is perfect now. I can confidently recommend Senestraro Family Orthodonitcs, too. Thank you so much for helping me and my son get our perfect smiles!

AURORA COLONY PUB

ometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, just like the theme song from “Cheers.” Located in historic downtown Aurora directly off 99E, the Aurora Colony Pub combines scratch-made pub fare with a homey atmosphere where neighbors become friends and friends become family. Originally erected in the 1930s, The Colony’s building is reminiscent of old Americana, complete with the original tin roof, concrete floors and rustic decor. Local residents Janae and Corey Barton purchased the business in 2015 and worked to create a family-friendly destination as well as a local watering hole. “We have a dining room separate from the bar and free kid’s meals on Mondays,” says manager Shelby Brezai. “In the summer we open the patio and there are yard games like Connect Four, Jenga and Cornhole. It’s fun for the parents to come out and relax while the kids play.” The Colony has a tasty selection of homemade comfort food guaranteed to satisfy any appetite. The tantalizing bone-in

Daily specials are listed on the whiteboard when you walk in with fun weekly traditions like Taco Tuesday with four different kinds of tacos and a margarita special, prime rib on Saturdays, and all-you-can-eat spaghetti on Mondays. “The plates are giant,” Shelby says. “It’s rare that someone gets through one, but it does happen, and then we’ll give you a second plate and a box!” Friday’s clam chowder is a local favorite and they often have seafood specials that day like oysters and pan-fried razor clams. A kid’s menu is available in the dining room for the little ones. Don’t forget to finish off your meal with something sweet like an apple galette or chocolate lava cake. Breakfast is served on weekends starting at 9:00 am, so come in and kick off your Saturday with eggs benedict or a breakfast quesadilla paired with a bloody mary! The bar at The Colony boasts every amenity to relax and unwind including a popcorn machine, TVs, video poker, and sometimes live local bands. The experienced bartenders can make practically any drink you’re in the mood for, with an impressive selection of liquor and local beer and wine. “We love to support other local businesses whenever we can,” explains Shelby “so we’ve recently started carrying beers

n 2021, Kyle and I had outgrown our townhome and decided to embark on a journey to find the perfect home. We met Donna and Matt at a friend’s birthday party, and instantly connected, having similar values and interests. At the time, we lived in Sherwood and were looking at various Portland suburbs for a home. The real estate market was extremely competitive at the time due to low interest rates and inventory, but Donna was able to find a semi-custom new build before it hit the market. She coordinated a site visit of a similar home in the Portland Metro Area with the builder to ensure we’d be happy with the final product. Knowing time was of the essence to get an offer in, she connected us with a lender and quickly moved us through the process to lock our offer in. She went the extra mile throughout the building phase by attending design meetings with us, stopping by the lot to check on the builder’s progress and advocating for our wants every step of the way. We have lived here for more than two years and will be growing our family any day. There is nothing we

would change about the home! Canby has been an excellent fit for us. We walk the logging trail down by the river daily, and love the proximity to wine country and boat launches on the upper and lower Willamette River. Both of us have jobs taking us all over the Portland area and down to Corvallis, so Canby is a great central location, and we love the smaller town vibe.

Directions Preheat oven to 375ºF. Line sheet pan with parchment paper or silicone mat. Have your fortune strips ready to go. Using stand mixer, whip egg whites and sugar on high speed for about 2 minutes, until frothy. Whip in melted butter, vanilla, almond extract and water until incorporated. Add flour and mix until flour just disappears. With tablespoon measure, spoon batter onto parchment paper and spread out into even 3-inch circles. Only do 2 to 3 at a time as they set quickly and you won’t be able to fold more than that. Bake cookies 7 to 8 minutes, until edges brown slightly (see note). When each batch finishes baking, remove from oven and quickly flip circle over. Place note in center and fold cookie in half (a semicircle). Place semicircle onto edge of a cup, and quickly fold ends down to crimp into a fortune cookie shape. Place cookie in muffin tin to cool and hold its shape. Repeat with remaining batter and enjoy. Note: If you let them brown too much, they’ll snap when you shape them. If they don’t brown enough, they will tear. ALSO: Experiment with food coloring, using red for Valentine’s Day.

The Benefits of Estate Planning Why should I do estate planning — I don’t have very much property?
P
By James M. Hunsaker
lanning your affairs in the event of your incapacity or death is one of the last things many people want to think about. It is also one of the easiest subjects on which to procrastinate. After all, for many, it is not a major concern — it can always be taken care of at a later date — until something unexpected happens and the lack of planning catches up with you. Planning for your incapacity and your estate involves more than simply deciding who receives your assets after you pass away. The following list discusses several of the ways planning for your incapacity and estate sooner rather than later benefits you and your family. NOMINATION OF GUARDIAN FOR CHILDREN: Even if you don’t think your estate will be especially large, preparing a will can still be valuable, both in practical terms and in granting you peace of mind. “Who will take care of your children if you cannot do so?” In your will, you can add a provision nominating guardians for your children if you and your spouse die while your children are still too young to take care of themselves. BLENDED FAMILIES: Setting up a comprehensive estate plan is a major benefit for families where each spouse brings in their own, non-joint children to the family. Unfortunately, blended families like these can be a powder keg for family conflict if a parent passes away without proper planning. You and your spouse can minimize this type of conflict by establishing exactly what will happen to your shared assets after you pass away. POWER OF ATTORNEY: “Who will pay your bills and handle your affairs if you are unable to do so?” A general durable power of attorney is a document that allows you to grant legal authority to another person (an “agent”) to perform tasks on your behalf. You are not giving up your own power to do these things. The “durable” power of attorney remains in effect even after
34 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
you have become incapacitated or incapable of making financial decisions. A power of attorney allows you to designate someone to take care of your affairs after you can no longer manage them yourself. Under a general power of attorney, your agent can do anything that you can do for yourself, including paying bills, writing checks, managing assets, and transacting with institutions and businesses for your benefit. ADVANCE DIRECTIVE: “Who will make medical decisions for you if you can’t?” The Oregon Advance Directive allows you to nominate people to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to make them yourself. It also allows you to provide guidance about your end-of-life decisions; specifically, life support and tube feeding. If you have not nominated a healthcare representative and your health fails to the point where one is necessary, a representative will be selected for you based on Oregon law. Estate planning can feel daunting and complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Many attorneys are happy to sit down with you to answer any questions, address any concerns and help you craft a comprehensive estate plan tailored appropriately to your specific needs and situation. The information provided in this article does not, and is not intended to, constitute legal advice; instead, all information and content in this article is for general informational purposes only.

VETERAN Ron Yarbrough ARMY VET TURNED CANBY DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF
By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
F
or people like retired Army veteran Ron Yarbrough, every day is a new opportunity to achieve greatness, and “going the extra mile” is simply a matter of standard procedure. Upon graduating high school and deciding to attend Lane Community College — with a goal of pursuing a degree in architecture — he received his draft notice. Not interested in the infantry units, he instead joined the Army Corps of Engineers where he learned he would become a firefighter. Basic Training was completed in Fort Lewis, Washington, followed by Advanced Individual Training School in Fort Rucker, Alabama. From there, he reported to Fort Hunter Liggett, California, where his unit provided structural support for the National Guard and Reserves in artillery training. Fires were a common occurrence, as were crashes on the nearby airfield, and they were tasked with managing both. From there, Ron went to Phu Loi Base in Vietnam — one of the largest Army airfields in the country at the time. There, he served on the crashand-rescue team, which also helped
troops in nearby Saigon, Bien Hoa and Tan Son Nhut. Arriving just after the Tet Offensive, tensions were high in the area, and bombing — and the resulting fires — were near constant.
Over the course of his yearlong deployment there, Ron gained so much experience that he quickly moved up the chain of command, becoming Sergeant and then Fire Chief. When he returned to the States, he was sent to Fort Stewart, Georgia, a training base for helicopter pilots. As Assistant Fire Chief, he was responsible for
managing Night Flight’s squad of 25 fire trucks to provide support to the numerous staging fields in the area. Ten months later, he was honorably discharged and moved back to Medford to get married. Although his dream of becoming an architect had never wavered, a series of circumstances led to Ron becoming a firefighter upon his return. In the ensuing years, Ron became the Deputy Fire Chief of Canby while pursuing drafting projects on the side. Never one to shy away from hard work, Ron would eventually retire from the fire department in 2005 and focus solely on his design company, Designs West, which he has managed to this day. He credits his time in the military with providing a career, instilling discipline and teaching him that “going the extra mile” is what it takes to make things happen. A man of vision and drive, Ron Yarbrough is the best among us. Next time you see him in town, please say hello and thank him for his service.

MEET THE ARTIST
CANDACE WILSON
Positivity Through Pottery Candace Wilson, woman at the wheel
I
By Kelly Romo, Contributing Writer
n a world that seems to be constantly bombarded with negativity, it’s refreshing to come across someone like Candace Wilson. Candace is a ceramic artist who has made it her mission to spread warmth and happiness through her unique designs. Her business, Little Bird Pottery, offers an extensive assortment of enchanting creations that will brighten your day. Born and raised in Aloha, Oregon, Candace Van Beveren Wilson was a creative spirit from the beginning. She graduated with a degree in Applied Design from Southern Oregon University and further extended her knowledge by studying Graphic Design at the University of Oregon. Her professional journey started as a graphic designer specializing in design and packaging. Candace’s affinity for ceramics began back in high school, and is attributed to her teacher, Judy Vogland, who introduced her to the potter’s wheel. Candace continued to explore ceramics in college, alongside painting and drawing. Her passion led her to further her studies in ceramics in Italy and at the School of Arts and Crafts. For Candace, ceramics were an inevitable choice as a medium of expression. Its versatility is astounding — from delicate pull knobs to intricate tile work and whimsical sculptures, it allows for boundless creativity. Furthermore, opening the kiln is always a moment of awe and wonder. The heat transformation imbues the clay with a life of its own, often revealing surprising and beautiful results that add an element of surprise to the pottery process. The unique blend of Candace’s design and ceramics experience equipped her with innovative techniques that she applied to clay. Her work in ceramics mirrors her graphic design experience, where

she incorporates words, textures, and images into her creations. She transforms her drawings and fonts into rubber stamps, which she then applies to wet clay to craft both usable and whimsical designs — whether wheel-thrown or slab-built. What sets Candace’s business, Little Bird Pottery, apart is Candace’s message on each of her products. She especially enjoys making garden stakes that feature animals like birds, squirrels, cats, and bunnies, all with an inspiring word on the bottom — words like empathy, kindness, peace, compassion, and healing. Her products remind us that there is still kindness and love in the world and that we should all strive to spread positivity wherever we go. Candace’s influence and dedication to her craft extends beyond her own studio. She is an active member of several art associations and galleries. She is a part of Local 14, an art group that has been promoting artists since 1967. Her work is also displayed in the Rain Spark Gallery in Lake Oswego, a cooperative gallery that champions a diverse range of artists and their unique crafts. With her commitment to the community, Candace also contributes to Valley Art in Forest Grove, Oregon’s oldest nonprofit art association. These affiliations serve as testament to her passion for ceramics and her desire to share the joy it brings with the wider community. Candace Wilson’s journey as a ceramic artist is an inspiring one. She has overcome obstacles and followed her passion to create a business that spreads inspiration and warmth wherever it goes. Little Bird Pottery is a testament to the fact that even small acts of kindness and love can make a difference in the world. We can all learn something from Candace’s message and strive to spread positivity in our own lives, one little bird at a time. If you’re captivated by Candace’s story and want to see more of her ceramic art, visit her website at www.littlebirdpottery. net. Those residing in or visiting Forest Grove can experience her stunning pieces in person at Valley Art, located at 2022 Main Street.

COMMUNITY
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
It’s Crab Knight Annual auction and dinner set for Feb. 24
T
By Kelly Romo, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Knights of Columbus
here is something about giving back to the community that brings people together. Every year, the Knights of Columbus hosts a fundraiser featuring delicious crab and an exciting auction and raffle. This event is more than just a night out with great food and fun activities — it helps to raise much-needed funds for the community. This year, the Charity Auction and Crab Dinner will be on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Canby Fairground’s main pavilion. The doors open at 4 p.m. for the silent auction, and dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. Check the website for the full schedule of events and to purchase tickets. The fundraiser supports high school scholarships, the Canby Food Bank, the Canby Utility’s Share the Warmth Program, Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies, Inc. and other organizations in need. This year, a special appeal is dedicated to Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies at 113 N. Elm St., Canby. Neuro,
42 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
as it’s affectionately known, specializes in assisting children facing developmental and behavioral challenges. Their comprehensive services include occupational, physical, mental health and speech therapies, catering to children from infancy to young adulthood. Attendees can expect to see various activities throughout the evening. There is a silent auction upstairs, a live auction paddle raiser for Neuro, and various games where attendees can participate for cash prizes. The event provides an exciting opportunity to win some prizes, all while giving back to the community in a significant way. If you want to contribute or get involved in the event, there are different ways to do so. You can participate in the silent auction, oral auction and raffles. There are great prizes available for the raffle tickets, including stays at luxury hotels on the Oregon Coast and in the Columbia River Gorge, $1,000 in cash, a $400 gift card to spend on anything at Cutsforth’s Marketplace, and a Phantom A8 Electric Scooter worth $450. Also, don’t forget to buy a dinner ticket and enjoy delicious, fresh crab while supporting a good cause. To preview the live and silent auction items prior to the event, please visit their website at canbykccharities.ejoinme.org/2024. Items are frequently added, so continue to check. They are always looking for additional live and silent auction items, so if you have an item or service you would like to donate, there is a button on the website. For 27 years, the Knights of Columbus Auction & Crab Dinner has brought the community together for a fun and meaningful night out. Over the years, the event has grown in popularity and sells out fast each year. The auction and crab dinner are open to the public, so anyone can attend the event and enjoy everything it has to offer. Dinner and raffle tickets may be purchased at the Canby Fairgrounds on Fridays and Saturdays, noon to 6 p.m., as well as Wednesdays, Feb. 7 and 14, noon to 6 p.m. Buy tickets online at canbykccharities.ejoinme.org/2024.

CELEBRATING Canby “Technique and ability alone do not get you to the top; it is the willpower that is most important.”
Dr. Ashley McFerron
Canby Eyecare Dr. Ashley McFerron, the owner of Canby Eyecare, purchased the practice from Dr. Donald Chase in 2011. She has been providing exceptional care for the Canby community ever since. Even from a young age, she wanted to make a career of helping others. Initially that led her toward a career in physical therapy, but she found the work unfulfilling. Switching lanes, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps to become an optometrist. Her practice offers comprehensive eye exams, quality lenses and frames and more. Of particular interest, Dr. McFerron specializes in cutting edge treatments for both Myopia Management and Tear Care for dry eyes. These are revolutionary treatments that Dr. McFerron claims are real “game changers” within the industry. Our eyes are one of our most cherished organs. Don’t settle for anything but the best care possible.

Donna Ellison is the independent owner and founder of Ellison Team Homes, a broker at Keller Williams Realty. Donna has been around real estate since childhood, as her father was a real estate agent. After becoming a job recruiter/ headhunter, she ultimately decided to pursue real estate due to her innate love of homes in the Portland Metro area. Donna took a break from real estate to focus on motherhood, returning 12 years ago when she started Ellison Team Homes. Since then, she’s been going strong, building her business and earning her stellar reputation in the industry. For Donna, community comes first, and her undying dedication and involvement with the local community sets her apart from the pack. Looking to buy or sell your home? Look no further than Ellison Team Homes.
In 2000, native Oregonian Mary Hanlon founded Hanlon Development, a real estate development firm designed to enhance communities by helping create high-quality, sustainable housing, and commercial and mixed-use projects. With 35-plus years’ experience, Mary earned a B.A. in political science, a B.A. in ethnic studies, (both at UC Berkeley) and a masters in urban and regional planning (UCLA). She has a sincere passion to strive towards strengthening local economies, bringing life back to neighborhoods and revitalizing historic downtowns. Hanlon Development recently won the DeMuro Restore Oregon Award. Her work can be seen in Canby. Her firm was responsible for the gorgeous construction/ renovation of The Canby Common (formerly the Canby City Block, which includes Canby’s Historic City Hall, the Old Police Station, the Canby Utility Building, and the Dahlia Apartment Complex).
Joan Monen is the owner of The Wild Hare Saloon & Café, a family-friendly restaurant and lively bar. She has been in hospitality for more than 40 years. She spent 12 years out of college working in a restaurant, learning every aspect of the business. In 2003, she and her husband jumped at the chance to remodel and rebrand an existing restaurant, and The Wild Hare Saloon & Cafe was born. Amazing food, a warm and friendly atmosphere, and top-quality service are all on the menu. Joan’s great enthusiasm for the work is contagious and her genuine affection for her staff is reflected in their loyalty. In 2015, they opened a location in Oregon City. Joan’s “other baby,” the annual Harefest, began as a class reunion with three bands playing in a parking lot. The event has grown into to a three-day music festival at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds & Event Center.

The History of Valentines
Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library or rental kiosk.
Valentine’s Day is a strange holiday. Its murky origins are based on the legend of the martyred St. Valentine, who supposedly married Christian couples secretly in the 3rd century, as well as the belief in medieval England and France that “love birds” paired in mid-February, as seen in the writing of Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare. Industrialization then brought mass-produced greeting cards, candy and the holiday hubbub we’ve come to expect. However you celebrate (or don’t), here are a few movies for couples, pals, gals and the whole family to warm your heart.
A League of Their Own (1992)
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
The Princess Bride (1987)
“There’s no crying in baseball!” Young men have been called to war during WWII and left baseball fields empty everywhere. In an attempt to save baseball from total financial ruin, an all-female professional baseball league is started in the Midwest by businessman Walter Harvey. Scouts are sent out across the country and find two women in, of all places, the Willamette Valley. Eventually a ragtag team is formed, coached by Team Manager Jerry Dugan, a drunk and former MLB player who’s embarrassed to even be there. Unsurprisingly, the team unites in the spirit of friendship, womanhood and feminism in an era steeped in patriarchy, even winning over Dugan. Starring a huge cast, including Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and many more. Rated PG for language and wartime stress.
“You ever take it off any sweet jumps?” Napoleon Dynamite’s iconic deadpan, off beat humor and ’80s style surprised us all in 2004. The movie takes place in rural Idaho, following awkward and eccentric 16 year-old Napoleon and his close friends, family and his quiet little life. Living with his older brother Kip and grandmother Carlinda, with his less-than-kind Uncle Rico visiting, we get to see Napoleon’s home and school life and hobbies, such as riding bikes, drawing cartoons and working on his dance routine for the school talent show. While seemingly simple and ordinary, it’s very much an understated slice-of-life story, with themes of friendship and love. Starring Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino and many more. Rated PG for thematic elements and language.
“Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Endlessly quotable, clever and hilarious, this movie is based on the 1973 book by William Goldman. This fantasy-comedy and fairy tale parody follows a sword-wielding farmhand named Westley who must rescue his true love, Princess Buttercup, from the evil Prince Humperdinck. Very much a parable, with The Grandpa reading and explaining the story to The Grandson, most characters are faced with questions of what it means to be a good friend, parent or partner. Westley navigates challenge after challenge of swords, fists and wits to prove his love and loyalty. Starring an iconic cast, including Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant and many more. Rated PG for scary scenes and violence.

For a time, pastured poultry was included in the farm’s repertoire, but the Wilsons have since backed off that endeavor. Focusing on their flock of sheep (Border Leicester and Coopworth), Susie and Dan are set up to direct market everything the sheep produce. Grass-fed and raised without the use of hormones, growth enhancers or antibiotics, SuDan Farm proudly offers some of the best-quality lamb to be found. They also sell breed stock all across the U.S. and Canada. Susie grew up in eastern Iowa and remembers that she always wanted to have a farm from the time she was very young. eet SuDan Farm, “the rock stars of lamb!” A local direct marketing farm for grass-fed lamb for over 22 years, SuDan Farm cut meats can be found at the farmstead, the local farmers markets or on the menu at some of your favorite local restaurants. They sell wool products, breed sheep and also have eggs available. If you love lamb or haven’t tried it yet, but would like to, get in touch with SuDan Farm and they’ll fix you right up! Located just south of Canby in the Yoder area, the land for SuDan Farm was purchased in 1996 by Susie and Dan Wilson who immediately began pasturing sheep on the property. “We started the farm with a few sheep and the idea to do some direct marketing,” Susie explains. Beginning January 2000, they took some of their locally butchered lambs, a bag of wool and a spinning wheel to the year-round Farmers Market in Salem. Not long after, Lake Oswego started their own Farmers Market and Susie landed a spot at the market with the help of a coworker. “Everything just took off from there,” she recalls. At one point, SuDan Farm was participating in five markets a week. They sold lamb by the piece under their newly acquired

day having my own flock of sheep.” Around 1990, when she was in her 40s, Susie went to sheep shearing school at Oregon State. “I had no animals; I was single at the time and my flock of sheep was basically fleeces in black plastic bags in my spare bedroom,” she says. Susie had become a nurse in 1978 and in 1986 she went to an advanced nurse practitioner school to become neonatal qualified. During the week she worked at Emanuel Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland and on the weekends, she was out shearing sheep. “I always won the contest for the most unusual hobby,” she declares.
Dan grew up on a big ranch in northern California where they raised every kind of livestock and had many hundreds of sheep. “They had beef and dairy and pigs and hundreds and hundreds of ewes,” Susie relates. Dan hunted as well; he learned how to dress game and was very interested in that
process. Wanting to learn more, he took butchering classes while attending college at Oregon State. He joined the Marines during the Vietnam War and flew F-4s for four years. Susie confides, “He was at heart a farmer.” Today, SuDan Farm butchers lamb yearround, providing about 30 different cuts. Dan helps with the cutting every Monday at Century Oak Packing, filling orders and getting ready for Tuesday deliveries of fresh product to chefs, caterers and the like, such as OHSU and the Portland Greek Festival. Every Saturday throughout the year, the couple can be found at the Portland Farmers Market at PSU, “the biggest, baddest

GARY LISMAN
A Life Unscripted Self-proclaimed B-lister shares showbiz tales

h, the stories this man can tell! Gary Lisman is the warmest, kindest, most affable man you’ll ever meet. He is an upstanding citizen, a veteran, a man of many talents and someone who, once upon a time, worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. He is the kind of person you start up a casual conversation with at a party, and then never want to leave his side. So full of interesting, outrageous, and unexpected anecdotes, Gary has lived the kind of celebrity-adjacent lifestyle most of us can only dream of. Gary grew up in California. He joined the Navy in 1964 with aspirations of seeing the world. When the Navy ironically resolved to keep him in state and on the shore, he fulfilled his commitment, and then got out to pursue adventure along other avenues. A friend of his was exploring a career in the development of concert sound systems, and when Gary joined him, the two worked with bands such as The Doors, Cream, The Turtles and many more. Interested in pursuing a career in film production, Gary then moved to LA. He lived at the famed Gulls Way Estate in Malibu — where many films and TV shows were filmed — and it was there that he started regularly meeting and interacting with a variety of celebrities. As a result, he landed several minor roles in TV shows. Then, when he eventually landed a job with Lee Merrin & Associates, an agency representing authors for Simon & Schuster, things really got interesting. During that time, Gary worked closely and directly with some of the biggest stars in the

business: Joan Crawford (who was exactly as you might expect her to be), Clint Eastwood, both Bert and Burt Bacharach, Eugene Landy (a psychologist who would later be credited with breaking up the Beach Boys), George Burns (who was always friendly and never without a cigar), Burt Reynolds, Yul Brenner, Raquel Welch and Carol Burnett, just to name a few. We could literally fill every page of this magazine with the stories Gary has about each. Fascinating, illuminating, and often hilarious, these stories have to be heard to be believed. Living so close to the flame for so long, Gary eventually burned out and moved here to Oregon. Returning to his love of sound engineering, he found a job working for the Audio Group in Portland and for the next several years worked on background business music and in-store ads for most of the stores and restaurants around town. Even after retirement, Gary is still working in the industry. He has been in more than 15 movies and TV shows shot in Oregon and was a “featured background” actor in Alison Brie’s movie, “Somebody I Used to Know.” If you are a sucker for a great Hollywood story, no one has as many or tells them as well as Canby’s very own Gary Lisman.

ROTARY CLUB OF CANBY
Care to Dance Swing into family fun at annual event
R
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photos courtesy of Rotary Club of Canby
eturning again for 2024, the Daddy-Daughter Dance is an evening of music and magic for the young and young at heart. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, March 16, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Ackerman Center in Canby. The project’s leader, Matthew Nelson, says this special event is sponsored by Rotary Club of Canby for the families of the community. Last year’s event was sold out with more than 400 daddies and daughters in attendance. “The Daddy-Daughter Dance is really critical for relationships that are core in our community,” says Ray Keen, Canby Rotary’s immediate past president. “I think one thing that is really needed is the opportunity for fathers and daughters — and other meaningful relations — to come together and connect.” Many adults and
64 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
kids are finding themselves drowning in screen time, Keen says, whether that is a product of remote work, school or simply an increased desire for escapism. “Either we use that to disconnect or we use it to reset,” he says. “Or we feel like, ‘Hey, I need to stay informed about the next thing that’s happening.’ With all that taking place, I think our relationships can really be impacted. So it’s important that we find time to do things together that are relational beyond just sort of being in the same room together, by actually having a meaningful experience together.” The simple act of stepping outside one’s comfort zone can be very meaningful and significant to an impressionable child or loved one, Keen explains. Impressions such as: “I had so much fun, Daddy, can we do it again?” “My daughter said this was the most fun she has ever had with me.” “Thank you for providing a special evening for us.” “Many dads out there, like myself, are terrible dancers,” he says with a chuckle. “But I think that one of the best things that we can do with a young daughter is step into a space where I’m not an expert. I don’t have all this figured out. But I do know that I want to make a night that is special for her.” While Keen and the other organizers see the event as meaningful and important, they also expect it to be a ton of fun. The evening’s agenda includes: a DJ who will provide a mix of exciting music; face-painting; a balloon artist; a photographer; and snacks and refreshments such as a chocolate fountain with marshmallows. Canby Rotary members are excited about providing this fun, magical evening for daddies and their daughters, and this special time brings tears to the eyes of many of the adults. “Our desire is to see dads and daughters come together for what we think will be a really magical evening,” Keen says. “There will be special treats and magical surprises, so it should be a fantastic time.” The Canby Rotary Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held 6 to 9 p.m. on March 16 at the Ackerman Center, 350 S.E. 13th Avenue. Tickets are $45 per couple and $15 for an additional daughter. All are welcome. Tickets are available online at canbyrotary.com.

he Canby High School girls’ swim team is undefeated at 4-0 and off to another great start midway through this season. With four district dual meets remaining, senior Amanda Yancey has emerged as one of the best on a team of outstanding individual swimmers. The Cougars are coming off one of their best seasons last year as they set their sights on winning their third-straight district championship this year. Yancey has played a major part on these winning teams. She earns high praise from her coach for her hard work in the pool and in the classroom. That’s why Canby Community Advantage magazine is recognizing her as its star of the month for February in its Meet The Athlete series. “She’s one of our fastest four girls, one of our team captains,” Canby swim coach Eric Laitinen said. “She places well at our meets and often wins her events. She’s a good role model. “She gets almost all As. She’s a really good student and a really good person. She leads by example and does everything she can for the team.”

A three-year state meet qualifier, Yancey often finds herself at the winning end of her best event, the 100-yard breaststroke. While breaststroke is her forte, she also competes in the 200-yard individual medley (which includes the fly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle), the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Her goal is to finish first in all four of her events at the district championship meet and then advance to the state finals in each event as well. In individual events, her personal best time in the 100 breaststroke is 1:11 and in the 200 IM it’s 2:17. “It’s super, super hard but it’s also very rewarding,” Yancey said about training to swim competitively. “You get to challenge yourself and try to be the best person that you can become. You race against other people but you’re also racing yourself and your previous best times. “You’re just competing to become the best version of yourself. It’s an amazing sport. It teaches you a lot of hard work and endurance and a lot of valuable skills in life.”
Yancey earned a varsity letter all four years at Canby High. Had COVID not interfered with one of her seasons, Laitinen said, she’d have qualified for the state meet four times instead of three. In 30 years at Canby, Laitinen has coached a lot of excellent swimmers, including one who qualified for the Olympic trials for three years. He said that Yancey may not be Olympic caliber, but she was a major player last year on what was probably his best Canby team. Even when she’s not swimming for Canby High, Yancey spends most of her time in the pool at the Canby Swim Center, teaching kids how to swim or working part time as a lifeguard. She also trains and competes for the Canby club team. After graduation from high school, Yancey wants to go to college and pursue a nursing degree.

PRESERVING THE PAST
Heart of Mark Prairie Work turns to interior of old schoolhouse
I
By Peggy Sigler, Mark Prairie Schoolhouse
n 2021, two ice-laden oak trees crashed onto the 1879 Mark Prairie Schoolhouse. The roof was crushed, with rafters stabbing down to the old-growth, rain-soaked Douglas fir floors. Walls tilted and boards dangled from the high ceiling. Original student desks and textbooks, along with artifacts and ephemera of the Mark Family, the rural community and decades of 4-H clubs were quickly removed from the site and safely stored by volunteers. Emerick Construction rebuilt the roof, straightened walls and replaced the cupola on top. The old school now wears a new coat of paint. The exterior is nearly done. This year, work turns to the heart of the Schoolhouse, the interior. Rough framing, plumbing and electrical are in as the building is brought up to current codes. Tongue-and-groove paneling, locally milled to match the original, Refurbished 1950s Gibson oven range will again clad the walls and ceilings. Vintage lighting, salvaged appliances and fixtures and gently refurbished fir floors will bring the past to life, whispering of days when 60 students filled the room. When done, Mark Prairie’s collections will be moved back on-site, telling stories of generations past for generations to come. The building will again open as a community center and event venue, as it has since 1946 when the school consolidated with Canby schools and the Mark family gave the site to the surrounding community. With insurance, grants, donations and thousands of volunteer hours, the Historical Society has made huge strides.

The Society is proud to have received grants to assist with the disaster recovery and restoration from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Clackamas County Cultural Coalition, Direct Link, Oregon Historic Trails Fund, Helen E. Austin Pioneer Fund, the Kinsman, Lee H. & Marion B. Thompson, Oregon Community, Roundhouse and Ford Family foundations. The Oregon Heritage Commission recently awarded MPHS $20,000 for interior work in one of 33 grants statewide. Canby Rotary gave $4,000 and will donate labor to rebuild the vestibule and porch. Volunteer Restoration Project Manager Peggy Sigler estimates $100,000 is needed to complete the project to county code requirements; volunteers continue to fundraise and write grant requests. As Mark Prairie looks to the future, MPHS invites you to help finish this last leg of the journey. Donations are still needed to complete this project, along with volunteers to help with projects small and large, on-site or remote, tools in-hand or at a computer. They urge you to step up. “And guess what?” says MPHS President Judi Aus, “We’re on the lookout for an inaugural site manager — could it be you?” To donate, volunteer and become a member, please visit markprairiehistoricalsociety.org. The Mark Prairie Schoolhouse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and located at 7528 S Mark Road, Canby.

CORNERSTONE WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Employer-sponsored retirement plans
For employer retirement plans — 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and others — the same timeline applies as per IRAs: You must begin withdrawing from the plan by April 1 following the year in which you turn 73. However, if you are still working past 73 and you own 5% or less of a company, you may be able to delay RMDs until you retire. Additionally, depending on your circumstances, you may receive a lump-sum distribution from 401(k), profit-sharing, and stock-purchase plans if completed in a one-year period. For tax purposes, RMDs from qualified retirement accounts are taxed as ordinary income.
Optimizing Required Minimum Distributions Calculating your distribution
The institution where your retirement is kept typically determines the RMD amount using the formula: Total balance as of December 31 divided by your life expectancy = distribution amount. However, there is some leeway here that may provide you with more beneficial tax consequences: You can either take your initial RMD in the year when you turn 73 or up until April 1 of the following year.
R

equired minimum distributions take on added urgency as you approach (and reach) age 73, with specific rules and tax implications. Seventy-three is an important age milestone for those in or near retirement, as it marks the time when required minimum distributions (RMDs) begin to be withdrawn annually from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and employersponsored retirement plans (previously, the threshold was 72). The milestone carries with it tax consequences that are not fixed. Rather, there are a few rules to consider that can help you optimize the impact on your bottom-line.
If you delay your RMD until the following year, you must take two RMDs that year — which may increase your tax consequences. You can take your RMD as a series of withdrawals rather than one lump payment, which may help you with monthly cash flow. Update your beneficiary/beneficiaries as to your distributions. For IRAs, account holders can designate anyone as a beneficiary; for employer-sponsored plans, they must designate their spouse as a beneficiary unless the spouse specifically waives the right.
Seek help: Tax consequences for RMDs can be significant and seeking the support of a financial professional can be prudent, to ensure that the results align with your goals. IRAs You must begin withdrawing from a traditional IRA by April 1 following the year in which you turn 73. The amount is based on your age with one exception: If you’re married and your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you, the RMD amount is based on your joint life expectancy. If your distribution is less than the required minimum, you will be penalized 25% of the difference. NOTE: Roth IRAs do not require an RMD.

THE CANBY CENTER
Beyond the Bell
After school program continues to grow

hat rarified child asks for more schoolwork at the end of the day? It’s hard to imagine that kids with kinetic energy would agree to spend more time studying, but that’s a weekly occurrence at The Canby Center After-School Tutoring Program, where the prevailing philosophy is that learning should always be fun. “My personal belief,” says Brooke Spencer, Elementary Programs Coordinator, “is that when learning is fun for kids, they are going to want to stick with it, even when it gets a little less fun at times.” The Tutoring Program, which takes place at The Canby Center, is expanding quickly. At the start of the school year last year they had three students, and this year they have 13. They still look to match students with tutors, and with the new building expansion, there’s even more potential for giving students the support they need to achieve better grades. But surely there is more to it than fun. Besides facilitating the educational support students need, there’s the relationship connection. Students get to be with the same caring adult once a week, says Spencer, and that kind of
78 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
attention can be life changing. Indeed, a significant number of tutors are retired teachers, and many have experience working with children in education. Is the Canby community of the giving nature, when it comes to kids and education? Speaking about the people who volunteer to mentor kids, Spencer says, “I have lived in Canby a couple years, and I am always shocked by the generosity and friendliness of the community. In addition to the tutors, some 50 reading mentors volunteer to read with students in our various grade schools.” The collective impact on the community has to be big. Some students come in with homework to do, and some work on fundamental skills. The kids might arrive at their first few sessions a bit nervous and reserved, but soon enough they are jumping into the word game or the math problem that their tutor has prepared for their educational journey. Which is great, because asking kids to do more work is a hard sell. We can all relate to being reluctant learners. It takes a little shift in attitude, says Spencer. “If they walk in excited to be here, that’s a huge success.” “Personal love for learning, confidence in communication, reading with rapport,” says Tom Randall, when he thinks about what he hopes to achieve with his students. “As a retired teacher, my heart for student’s lives and my availability made for the win-win decision to tutor.” Vince Caporale says, “I realized during my time in the classroom that many students fall through the cracks and need one on one attention. Add to that the COVID issue, and I didn’t need much convincing.” As for the kids, if you ask them what they like about their tutoring sessions at The Canby Center After-School Tutoring Program, they’re likely to say the reading and the snacks, the math and the treats, or the free books — which is to say, pretty much everything. “I want to help my students gain skills and confidence in reading, which will hopefully result in a love for it,” says retired teacher Jo Ann Jamison, who also states, “A child must learn to read before they read to learn.”

T
he CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) concept was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the area-wide threat of a major disaster in California. Further, it confirmed the need for training civilians to meet their immediate needs. CERT became a national program in 1993. There are now CERT programs in all 50 states, including many tribal nations and U.S. territories. Each is unique to its community and all are essential to building a culture of preparedness. There are more than 2,700 local CERT programs nationwide and more than 600,000 people have trained since CERT became a national program. CERT volunteers come from neighborhoods, workplaces or other community organizations. Members join because they want to learn how to better prepare for hazards that threaten their homes and communities. They want to protect their families, themselves and their communities. As a CERT volunteer, you will become an active participant in learning about

hazards and preparing for them. After training, you may be called upon to support emergency services following a disaster. So, who is the ideal CERT volunteer? You! Anyone can be a part of a CERT program. Everyone, regardless of age or abilities, has the capacity to contribute to a CERT program. Scouts, high school students, young adults, moms and dads, and senior citizens — people of all ages and backgrounds are found in CERT programs around the country. A key factor for CERT members is the ability to spontaneously organize and activate themselves in the event of a major disaster. If there is a significant earthquake, phones and other communications channels may be interrupted. CERT members will know where to go, how to organize their efforts, and will get to work without any specific order being issued. CERT members’ responsibility is to themselves, then their family and, finally, their community. Join Canby Fire District’s CERT. Fill out an application today if you’re interested in being part of the CERT group. Please visit www.canbyfire.org or call 503-266-5851 to learn more.

CANBY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Blooming Romance Mapping love and flowers in Canby Story and Photos by Dawn Eleen, Canby Historical Society
F
ebruary is the month of romance, flowers and love. Did you know that the Depot Museum houses our National Bouquet? This original U.S. Flower Map was created and copyrighted in 1911 by six Canby men, led by A.W. Butterfield, the president and originator of the newly incorporated U.S. Flower Map Company of Canby. The flowers representing each state were chosen by school children’s votes, the state legislator or popular community suggestion. The legend accompanying the map is broken down by state and notes the method of selection. Butterfield spent roughly two years researching and identifying the appropriate flower for each of the 46 states and three territories, then commissioned Ohio artist N.B. Crabbe to draw the map. Some 10,000 copies, measuring 27 by 37 inches,
82 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
were lithographed on a satin-finished muslin fabric by the Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia. Butterfield lived in Canby for a few years before moving to Corvallis, where he passed away in 1926. Canby’s first city council, founded in 1893, was a diverse group. Orman Roscoe Mack, vice president of the Flower Map Company, was a member. Born in 1869, his surname was appropriated by a pioneer family, the Macksburgs. J.E. Sutherland, a logger who served on the council until leaving Canby in 1927, was the secretary. And John Eid, first a hardware business owner, went on to serve the city as treasurer and was president of the Canby Union Bank, founded in 1932. The remaining members of council included: H.K. Stogsdill, who owned the house at 486 NW Second Avenue (long known as the home of Adam and Ida Knight); and W.H. Bair, whose
1912 home on Third Avenue remains a Canby landmark. Stogsdill was a leading commission merchant and twice the mayor of Canby. The asking price for the original map was a mere $2.50. Though picturesque and patriotic, map sales did not meet expectations. The bulk of the maps found their way into wooden crates, stored away in the attic of the W.H. Bair warehouse. Weeks before the death of Roscoe Mack (the lone survivor of the original corporation), a tenant vacating the warehouse discovered heavy wooden crates bearing Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Co. shipping labels, and the long forgotten flower maps resurfaced. In 1965, William Earl Mack, the sole heir of his father’s estate, gave full title and the remaining maps to Bill and Myra Weston, owners of the Canby Herald, for distribution within the Canby community. The Westons later decided William’s wishes would be best served by gifting the maps to the newly formed Canby Historical Society in 1968, and the “National Bouquet” map found its permanent home in the Depot Museum, where it is a beautiful and treasured exhibit. In 2011, the Canby Historical Society ran a very successful fundraising campaign “100 Years for 100 Dollars.” Thirteen years later, you can still purchase one of these antique maps
2, 1965. They visited Oregon on vacation shortly after their marriage and couldn’t believe how green, alive and warm it was compared to Chicago winters. Unbeknownst to Lilli, Josef made a blind bid on a farm outside Canby. Six months later, they were notified that they now owned the property. So they moved, with two children in tow, to Oregon, with no farming experience but with plenty of energy, ideas, dreams and pure faith. There were many struggles inherent in the farming business in semi-rural Oregon, but they planted grapes in 1978 before the world had heard of the Willamette Valley. The winery received a notice from the county that it was illegal to make their wine, but by 1983, they produced their first “legal” vintage. They had persevered and the winery lived on.

from the Historical Society for $100.00. Owing to the campaign, concurrent exposure and expired copyrights, you can also find copies of the map online. Copy or original, the map is a unique and beautiful piece of historic art that would grace any home or office. A little challenge for you or a homework project for the kids: Which states were still territories? What state is missing from the map? Are all the flowers represented on the map still the official flowers for each state? If not, what states have changed and what is their official flower today? Instilling this piece of Canby history in our local youth would be a fun and fulfilling way to keep the story of the U.S. Flower map alive. More romantic still is a love story that took place in Canby — the story of Josef and Lilli Fleischmann of St. Josef’s Winery. Josef and Lilli were German immigrants. They met in the German American Club in Chicago. There, Lilli saw a good dancer in fancy attire who seemed a bit slick. Josef saw a young beautiful lady. Their first date was at a drive-in movie, but Josef was with someone else, and Lilli was the third wheel. Fortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for his official date that night, and three weeks later, Josef and Lilli shared their first kiss and exchanged “I love yous.” They dreamed of an American life: a nice house, fancy car, parties and a family. Josef moved from Chicago to New York for a business venture; Lilli missed him. As the adage goes, “absence makes the heart fonder,” and they married on Jan.
Lilli and Josef Fleischmann
The Fleischmanns also owned the Fleischmann’s Bakery on First Street, now Rounder’s Bar, but the winery remained the overriding focus of their lives. Daughter Tara left her life in Seattle to run the winery in 2004, and son Kirk is the vineyard and farm manager. Josef and Lilli were married for 58 years, building a family, a business and making an enduring contribution to the Willamette Valley. Josef passed away on June 12, 2023, but their love and their legacy will live on. We honor the Fleischmanns and their true love. May we all be so blessed! READ MORE AT CITYHANDSHAKE.COM 83

Community member support makes this possible! Take advantage of marketing your local business while helping the CHS Theatre troupe reach their fundraising goal. Ad space for “Into the Woods” programs is available from now through Feb. 15. Two types of sponsorships are offered — business or personal. Ads are divided into tiers beginning at $25 for a quarter page, $50 for a half page, with a full page running $100, $250 or $500 (based on additional advertising and perks). Ads are in full color and businesses can use the space for a logo or a graphic, business card or coupon, or let the Theatre Boosters create something for you! Perks accompanying ads may include social media shout-outs on Facebook and Instagram, lobby signage, free tickets and a “thank you” during the pre-show announcements. Local businesses can take advantage of this opportunity to connect with the community and show their support for CHS Theatre. In turn, audiences will be inclined to reciprocate by supporting the local advertised businesses. Your sponsorship and audience participation will be well-received and serve as an inspiration to these young and talented individuals. If you happen to miss the Feb. 15 deadline for placing an ad, but still wish to contribute, donations are always welcome through Canby High School’s main office, 503-263-7200, or by contacting Rachael Keen through the CHS Theatre Boosters at canbyhstheatre@gmail.com. Rachael, who’s in charge of fundraising, has an active history as a booster parent and even directed a production once. “She gets other parents involved and makes the boosters a really robust group,” says Sullivan. “Into the Woods,” Canby High School’s spring production, is directed by Sullivan Mackintosh with music direction by Hannah Healey (who also teaches at Baker

Sullivan concludes, “Ultimately the surviving characters learn that though they grieve their losses and regret their mistakes, they are not alone — and that by telling their stories and carefully considering the lessons of the past, they can create a better future and become a stronger community.” This beautifully-told story is creative
and imaginative and serves to bring home the example that our choices and actions affect not only ourselves, but others as well. “It’s a lesson for students to be thinking about as they grow towards young adulthood,” Sullivan relates. “In addition to that, the music is just absolutely wonderful!” “We hope to get a lot of people out to see this show,” Sullivan comments. “It’s very impressive!” Filling the 725-seat auditorium may be a fairy tale in its own right, but these drama students are artists who care about producing quality performances. Highly motivated to present the best show possible, they are committed to “giving their all” for any number of occupied seats in the audience. Please join in for any of the six performances of “Into the Woods” at Canby High School Richard R. Brown Fine Arts Center Auditorium. The musical production runs from Feb. 29–March 2. The History of Chocolate Ancient, delicious and divine
By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
W
hen we hear the word chocolate, most of us picture a bar, ice cream, baked goods, or a confection of some type. Typically, we think of eating chocolate, not drinking it, and a sweet taste is usually associated with it rather than a savory one. However, for approximately ninety percent of chocolate’s extensive history, it was primarily a beverage, and sugar didn’t figure into the equation at all. While the terminology can be a bit puzzling, most contemporary experts refer to “cacao” as the plant or its beans prior to processing, while the term “chocolate” refers to a product made from the beans. “Cocoa” is the term for chocolate in powdered form, though across the Atlantic, the British frequently use the word “cacao.” “Chocolate” has been traced by etymologists back to the Aztec word “xocoatl,” which described a bitter beverage brewed from cacao beans. The Latin name for the cacao tree, Theobroma cacao, translates to “food of the gods.” Historians today estimate that chocolate has been around for at least 2000 years, but recent research suggests it may be even older. Although it’s difficult to establish an exact date for the 86 TO ADVERTISE WITH US, CALL 503.825.2111
origin of chocolate, it’s evident that it was valued from the very beginning. For many centuries in pre-modern Latin America, cacao beans were actually used as currency. A single bean could buy one tamale, while 100 beans could be traded for a good turkey hen, as noted in a 16th-century Aztec document. Both the Mayans and Aztecs considered the cacao bean magical and sometimes divine. It was commonly a part of sacred rituals of birth, death, and marriage. It wasn’t until Europeans discovered the Americas and became familiar with the native cuisine that chocolate made its entrance on the world stage. According to legend, the Aztec king Montezuma welcomed the Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes with a feast that included drinking chocolate. Although chocolate didn’t initially agree with the European palate, once it was mixed with honey or sugar, it rapidly grew in popularity throughout Spain. By the 17th century, Europeans had embraced chocolate as a glamorous drink, reputed to possess medicinal, nutritious, and even aphrodisiac properties (rumors suggest that Casanova was a big fan of chocolate). But it remained primarily a drink of the upper class until the invention of the steam engine revolutionized chocolate production, resulting in chocolate becoming available in mass quantities to society at large. It was in 1828 that a Dutch chemist devised a method
to create powdered chocolate by filtering out approximately half the natural fat (cacao butter) from chocolate liquor, pulverizing what remained and introducing a mixture of alkaline salts to negate the bitter taste. This product, known as “Dutch cocoa,” eventually led to the development of solid chocolate. Joseph Fry, in 1847, is credited with the creation of the world’s first chocolate bar. Fry discovered that by adding melted cacao butter back into Dutch cocoa, the result was a moldable chocolate paste. Within twenty years of Fry’s discovery, the now famous company Cadbury was selling boxes of chocolate candy in Britain. Soon thereafter, another recognizable name, Nestle, pioneered the creation of milk chocolate in Switzerland. During the Revolutionary War in America, chocolate was so valued that it was included in soldiers’ rations in lieu of wages. Most of us today wouldn’t likely settle for payment in chocolate over dollars, but that doesn’t mean the humble cacao bean isn’t a potent force in the economy. In the U.S. alone, chocolate
is a four billion dollar industry, and the average American consumes at least half a pound per month. In recent times, a chocolate revolution has swept across the globe, marked by
a burgeoning interest in highquality, artisanal chocolates and sustainable, efficient cacao farming and harvesting techniques. Due to this shift in consumer tastes, large corporations like Hershey’s have
developed artisanal chocolate lines by acquiring smaller premium chocolate producers, and independent chocolatiers have proliferated as well. Here in the Pacific Northwest, artisanal chocolate has exploded in recent years. One such example is Canby’s Puddin’ River Chocolates & Confections, the pride and joy of Owner and Founder Teresa Sasse. It began in 2003 when she left the deli and catering industry to explore new avenues of creativity. Chocolate offered endless possibilities, and so began a love affair which would provide an outlet to feed her passion. And while she finds great joy in producing some of the best chocolates you’ll find anywhere in the world, it’s not just about that. Teresa is exceedingly passionate too about the history of chocolate; where the cocoa beans are sourced from and who the farmers are who harvest them. Puddin’ River’s chocolate is a unique one-of-a-kind blend, composed of
several different types, all from reputable sources in Europe, and all devoid of harmful additives found in so many domestic brands. Every product she offers is a perfected recipe resulting from years of passionate trial and error, research and love. Taste is subjective. We all have favorite desserts, and it’s easy to argue the merits of one brand or type over another. But in the case of Puddin’ River, there’s no argument: it’s simply the best. So the next time your sweet tooth has a hankering for chocolate, know that this
wonderful treat has a history stretching back to indigenous peoples of South and Central America, and that the tasty chocolate morsels available in your local supermarket are the result of centuries of trial, error, and innovation. And if you wish to sample the cutting edge creations of local chocolatiers, be sure to visit some of the artisanal producers featured above, or the myriad of other producers in our country’s continually evolving chocolate landscape.

n the month of February, all MWNW stores will be asking for donations to support the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas County. This nonprofit has served seniors of Clackamas County for 50 years and counting! Why is this nonprofit so important? Their services provide critical support to at-risk seniors and adults with disabilities who are in danger of abuse, neglect and exploitation. The highly skilled and professional staff protect the seniors’ finances, oversee bill-paying needs, and when necessary, find them a safe, clean place to live. Their staff then continue to regularly check on each client for as long as they are needed. On average, their staff serves 750 new clients annually. 75 percent of their clients are women and 70 percent are at or below the federal poverty level. Seniors above 85 years old are the fastest
growing population and are also the most in need of services. It is estimated that 1 in 6 seniors will be a victim of financial exploitation and 1 in 10 will be abused or neglected. Please help us raise funds by donating online or visiting one of our local stores.
