File Uploads Shouldn’t Take Forever You just finished an important project in your home office after days of work. All of the files are organized and ready to upload to the company’s cloud server. It’s a big project with multiple moving pieces, and you’re glad to have it finished. You begin to upload the files right before lunch and then step away for a well-earned break. A little while later, you come back to your workstation to resume your day. Wait, why are the files still uploading? Only 5% have uploaded and the deadline is today. There must be some sort of glitch going on with the internet connection, right?
Unfortunately, it’s not a glitch – it’s slow upload speeds, and you could be waiting a while for your files to finish uploading because of them. Many internet providers prioritize just download speed because people have historically pulled more data down from the internet than they upload to it. Think about things
like streaming shows and movies, downloading video games, or loading a website to view. These activities all use download speed to work properly in a reasonable amount of time. However, increasing online activity and new types of technology have heightened the need for fast upload speeds. Now folks are using cloud-based collaboration software for work, like Microsoft Teams or Zoom for video calls and Google Drive or Drobox for online file sharing. And with many providers, upload speeds aren’t fast enough to handle all of that data being sent up to the internet. DirectLink doesn’t think that’s right, so we offer internet upload speeds that are up to 10 times faster than other providers in the area. At that rate, that important work file upload that took 2 hours could have been done in less than 15 minutes. Plus, with internet service from DirectLink, you won’t run into any caps or slowed speeds as a result of using

‘too much’ data like you might with other providers. You’re free to upload and download as much as you want without worrying about data overage fees or a slowed-down network. Even better, DirectLink’s unlimited data policy applies to all of their internet packages, not just the top-level speeds. Learn more about DirectLink’s quality, fast upload speeds and unlimited data at www.DirectLink.coop/Internet, or give your local Member Services Team a call at 503.845.2291 in Mt. I
’m not sure about you, but my summer seems to be busier than ever this year. After several years of limited events and activities, 2022 appears to be attempting to make up for all the things we missed, and then some. It makes me want to ask if we were always this busy before the pandemic? In our household, we recently added a puppy, celebrated the high school graduation of our daughter, are in the midst of planning for a fall wedding for my son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, and purchased an antique fire engine with my father. My grandfather was the first fire chief of the Summit Fire Department in Woodinville, Washington, from 1947 to 1973 — small world fact: Canby Fire Chief Jim Davis was also the fire chief for Woodinville at one time. My Father volunteered for Summit Fire Department from 1960 to 1964 and worked for Beaverton Fire Department/Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue from 1964 to 1999 Back in 1989, I had a summer job with TVFR during my college days painting fire hydrants — I know, super glamourous, very dangerous, but someone had to do it. I would frequently joke with my dad that we should buy a fire engine or truck. He’d always laugh and the discussion would go nowhere, until just a few weeks ago, when I came across an engine for sale in Weston, Oregon. The next thing I knew, we were making the four-hour drive to take a
look. After a bit of haggling, we found ourselves the proud owners of a 1947 Ford/Howard Cooper Fire Engine. With a top speed of 52 miles an hour, it took us more than six hours to drive it home, but we made it, safely. If you recently attended the Canby Independence Day Parade, you might have seen us driving it around. Fire Chief Jim Davis was kind enough to allow us to follow all the current Canby Fire District units. We had a ball. To see the reaction of both young and old really put a smile on our faces. I want to thank all the folks who sent us photos from that day. You helped us capture a truly magical day, especially the image above. Taken by one of our good friends, it pictures the unbridled enthusiasm of a 4-year-old boy named Dylan Vidourek. Seeing the joy that this vehicle created and the enthusiasm it generated feels amazing, and is just one more reason why I feel so connected to this great community of Canby.

Canby’s First Oktoberfest! FOB TO HOST FOBTOBERFEST IN WAIT PARK
TIME TIMEFOR FOR

HELLO, FRIENDS OF BEER!
O
BY HILARY BERG, STAFF WRITER
ktoberfest, the annual festival in Munich, Germany, remains one of the most popular European celebrations. Because of the many German immigrants who’ve moved to the U.S. over the centuries, Oktoberfest has become an American tradition, too. Just ask FOB Taproom owner Steve Puga. Since its opening, FOB Taproom has been an Oktoberfest mainstay. Clanging steins and polka music fill the air once a year at the Canby establishment, where special German beers are poured and adored. This year, Puga’s taking his FOBTOBERFEST on the road — actually just a block or two down the street — to Wait Park, where the City of Canby will join him in hosting the town’s first-ever and to-be-annual “FOBTOBERFEST,” Sept. 17, noon to 9 p.m. Teutonophiles and more casual fans of German beer and culture will be delighted in the offerings. Puga plans to pour more than a dozen rare beers, all imported from Deutschland, including a ceremonial wooden keg to be tapped at noon, kicking off the event in traditional style. Authentic food will be available, as well, starring German sausages crafted by Ebner’s Meats, scratch-made pretzels from B’s Bake Shoppe and more. Paired with lagers, witbiers, kölsch (and others) — plus non-alcoholic alternatives from many great vendors — the menu is simple but intentional. This celebration promises a bona fide experience but with a community atmosphere, by Canby, for Canby, and the surrounding neighbors. Don’t forget the music. No German-themed party is complete without polka. The Oompah Band and other such musical acts will pluck their guitars and tickle their accordions inside the gazebo. The chicken dance is required, as well as a hearty appetite for a memorable time at Canby’s first-ever Oktoberfest celebration: FOBTOBERFEST. Prost!

KING’S FARM TO TABLE CANBY MARKET
Canby’s Fresh and Gourmet Superette By Hilary Berg, Staff Writer

pen since 2021, King’s Farm to Table Canby Market represents decades of culinary mastery. In fact, chef/coowner Bill King has been in the business more than 50 years, with two cookbooks to his credit. In the early ’80s, he donned the executive chef toque at the Aurora Colony Inn, followed by the opening of a French-style brasserie in Portland. Next, a 25-year stint, starting in 1985, at McCormick & Schmick’s, the surf-and-turf giant that grew from six locations to 96. King, the former corporate executive chef and vice president of culinary operations, was a key player in the expansion before the outfit was sold to a Houston firm in 2011. Interestingly, his travels during that corporate stint continue to influence his culinary work, especially barbecue. King says he learned from pitmasters during his many trips. But it was at the

farmstand he opened in 2017 with his wife, Jennifer, where he created a following for his smoked meats. Located on Stafford Road, the farmstand was housed in a “shack” perfect for selling his barbecue, not to mention justpicked heirloom tomatoes, strawberries and more. In the Kings’ 2,500-square-foot garden, they cultivated the produce they sold.
Eventually, they looked for a brick-andmortar opportunity to continue selling farmstand-quality fruits and vegetables. In October 2021, the Kings landed in Canby in the heart of the charming city’s downtown. To the specialty produce, he added local gourmet products and beverages, as well as the main focal point: the deli case. Filled with housemade items, the case’s offerings range from old-fashioned meatloaf to mom’s Sunday supper lasagna, to more modern dishes such as tortellini in creamy alfredo sauce with spring vegetables. With six or eight different salads — typically 20 different products in the case at any given time — King’s Table is known for its chef-inspired delights, which brings us back to barbecue.
On weekends, May to October, patrons can devour what’s smokin’, such as Texas-style brisket, western North Carolinastyle pulled pork, baby-back ribs with a Tennessee sauce, whole roasted chickens and more. With such an experienced kitchen, King’s Farm to Table Canby Market has it covered, guaranteeing a truly delicious experience. The Canby Chamber of Commerce agrees, honoring the market with the 2022 Best New Business Award.

HISTORY
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
C
reated by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, Superman first appeared in 1938’s Action Comics #1, which sold for a staggering $3.25 million in 2021. Starring in 1939’s Superman #1, this was the first comic book ever devoted to a single character. Interestingly, Superman was first created as a homeless villain given temporary powers by a mad scientist, but thankfully Siegel and Schuster gave him a cape, spandex, a Midwestern childhood, and a cool alien backstory instead! Although earning moderate salaries, Siegel and Schuster unbelievably sold the rights and royalties to Superman for $130. When they asked for a raise, DC Comics falsely told Siegel, “Our company has very little to gain in a monetary sense from the syndication of this material.” After filing a lawsuit, they were fired in 1947. Siegel returned to DC in 1959 at standard pay and no byline (aka no credit), leaving again in 1965 and filing another lawsuit. When the Superman movie began production in the 70s, Siegel launched a successful PR campaign and secured $20,000 annual pensions for himself and Schuster, an amount that has increased over time. As of 2016, their estates have launched further copyright lawsuits for additional compensation. But let’s get to Superman’s backstory, if you don’t know it from the many comics and films… The planet Krypton is facing climate collapse and destruction, but the leaders won’t listen to Superman’s father, Jor-El, the planet’s best scientist. Fearing the worst, Jor-El and Lara put baby KalEl into a small spaceship and send him to Earth. Krypton explodes, orphaning Kal-El, and the planet’s remnants become kryptonite, Superman’s one vulnerability. And the red blanket Kal-El is wrapped in becomes his cape! His spaceship crashes in rural Smallville, Kansas, where he’s adopted by the Kents and leads a typical albeit concealed life as Clark Kent, a farmer’s son. But he can’t contain his powers for long, and he yearns for the excitement of the big city. Leaving behind

his parents and childhood love, Lana Lang, he moves to Metropolis to become a reporter for the Daily Planet, falling in love with Lois Lane, and sneaking off as Superman whenever danger calls. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about Superman’s most important moments in comic book history: The Death of Superman and Crisis on Infinite Earths. 1985’s Crisis was a meta-attempt to restart the continuity (or lack thereof) for Superman and all of DC Comics’ characters, whose backstories had gotten so tangled and contradicted that no one could keep them straight anymore. DC’s solution was to create the multiverse, where all the various versions of characters could live —Golden Age Superman, for instance, lives on Earth 2—and in this “event,” the big baddie, The Anti-Monitor, wants to destroy the multiverse. It’s mind-boggling, epic, emotional, staggeringly illustrated, and a surprisingly fun read that forever changed DC Comics. 1992’s The Death of Superman, a PR stunt cash grab and one of the worst comics ever written in my opinion, made $30 million the first day and sold 6 million copies. The unprecedented idea of Supes’ death shocked the world at the time, but for me it just lacks substance. Superman has survived just about everything, like Batman, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, interdimensional super gods, time travel, and flying through the sun. But Doomsday, a big brute, punches Superman to death for 160 pages! Thankfully, Superman is revived in the incredibly written and redeeming The Return of Superman by Dan Jurgens. If you read Death, make sure you read Return immediately after! One of the most iconic symbols and recognizable superheroes ever, Superman has forever changed pop culture since his inception 84 years ago! Spanning nearly a half century of films and tens of thousands of comic book pages, the Man of Steel continues to capture the hearts and minds of readers young and old. Watch a movie or pick up a comic book today to celebrate this pop icon!
Complain or do, which are you? There are two types of people in the world: Those
who complain and those who do. And the people complaining the most are always doing the least. Why is this? Do people win more because they complain less or vice versa? Is this relationship causative or correlative? Complaining produces three negative reactions that directly impair our decision-making, performance, and progress. First, complaining changes our mood because often, “saying is feeling,” and this, in turn, discourages effective action. Complaining can be contagious too, projecting on who we complain to, who then feel compelled to not only complain as well, but possibly even one-up our complaints. If we then respond with more of the same behavior, a negative feedback loop can develop. Second, complaining produces feelings of purposelessness and halts motivation. And third, complaining encourages us to perceive ourselves as victims of unavoidable and unchangeable circumstances. Thus, we shouldn’t be surprised that the less inclined someone is to make excuses, the more successful they generally are, and the people going nowhere almost always have a wheelbarrow of excuses to explain why. So, what should we do when we’re not getting the outcomes we want? We should use these experiences to get better, not bitter. Instead of complaining, we should hold ourselves exclusively accountable for the failures and then figure out why we’re floundering and how to change the behavior in the future. The crucial realization is this: every problem has a solution, even the ones we’ve failed to solve. The solutions may not be what we want, but they are solutions. No matter how difficult or daunting a situation is, there’s always a path forward. Whether we find and take it is on us.

Canby Summertime Events Bigger and Better
By Tyler Francke & Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writers
Big Night Out Street Dance From Canby’s signature Independence Day Celebration and Parade to the jam-packed summer-ending bash that is Canby’s Big Weekend in August, no one does summer fun quite like Canby. City organizers and business leaders are ready to prove that again this year, as Canby’s Big Weekend is just around the corner—and it looks to be bigger and better than ever. It all starts with Canby’s annual Big Night Out Street Dance from 6 to 11 p.m., Friday, August 26, on North Grant and Second Avenue, organized by the City of Canby and Backstop Bar & Grill. The dance traditionally kicks off Canby’s Big Weekend—following the Clackamas County Fair and coinciding with the Swan Island Dahlia Festival, Cutsforth’s Cruise-In, Canby Dahlia Run and Basil & Art Festival—and bookends the summer events calendar. The event typically includes live music and dancing (obviously), food and drinks, activities for kids and teens, and other fun. The dance was started eight years ago by the Backstop and city officials, and has quickly grown into one of the community’s most popular and anticipated annual events. This year’s Big Night Out Street Dance will showcase the 10-piece band with the horn-driven sound of Return Flight, and the authentic country music stylings of headliner Kurt Van Meter. Vendors from local restaurants and watering holes such as the Backstop, Ebner’s Custom Meats, FOB Taproom, and Wayward Sandwiches will also be on hand, as will community organizations including the St. Patrick’s Knights of Columbus and La Luz del Mundo, who support the event. The event also features a cornhole tournament, bounce houses, an arcade game truck, and other yard games. “There will be all sorts of fun activities for the family,” says one of the event’s main organizers, Canby Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator, Tyler Nizer. “It’s a really cool event that showcases a lot of local businesses and community members. Come on out and dance the night away. The whole Big Weekend is just a great time to see all that Canby has to offer.” For more information about Big Night Out and how you can get involved, contact Tyler Nizer at NizerT@CanbyOregon.gov or 503-319-9229. 26 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Swan Island Dahlia Festival Swan Island Dahlias, the largest and leading dahlia grower in the entire country, is located right here in Canby. Established in 1927 and still owned and operated by the Gitts family, the farm boasts almost 50 acres of the most dazzling, varied, and unique dahlias you’ve ever seen, displaying 370+ varieties and roughly 10 new varieties each year. Prior to the pandemic, the farm hosted a 6 day dahlia festival every summer, split between 2 weekends. Since then, they have adapted to our advantage! Now Swan Island Dahlias is open to the public for 2 full months, from August 1st to September 30th! It’s FREE to attend, FREE to park, and if the stunning, world-class assortment of gorgeous f lowers isn’t enough to lure you in, then perhaps the adorable gift shop will. If not that, then the food (anywhere from 2 to 6 food trucks are on site at all times), the educational classes (art, health & beauty, f loral arranging, dahlia care, and more), or the entertainment (live music every Saturday and Sunday from 12-4pm) certainly will! This is truly the hidden gem of the Willamette Valley. You don’t want to miss it! Looking to find some beauty, peace and tranquility? A place to enjoy the company of friends and family; to eat some delicious food, drink, and live entertainment? Look no further than Swan Island Dahlias. Located at 995 NW 22nd Ave in Canby, and open 6 days a week from 9:00am - 5:30pm (closed Wednesdays) from August 1st through September 30th. Gift shop open year round! For more information about the Swan Island Dahlia Festival, email info@dahlias.com, call (503) 266-7711, or visit dahlias.com/ annualdahliafestival.aspx.
Cutsforth’s Cruise-In Saturday morning, Aug. 27, Canby’s favorite slice of Americana will be back where it belongs, as the beloved tradition of the Cutsforth’s Cruise-In returns to Wait Park and downtown Canby for its 28th edition, after two years at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Events Center. The car show, which started in the parking lot outside Cutsforth’s Market but grew into a major tri-county event in its many years at Wait Park, was moved to a drive-thru format at the fairgrounds in 2020 due to the pandemic. It was staged as a more traditional walk-thru event in 2021 but remained at the fairgrounds, which offered more space to spread out and socially distance than downtown Canby. Frank Cutsforth, Cruise-In founder and organizer and owner of Cutsforth’s Market, said city leaders requested that organizers consider bringing the event back to the park because of the positive impact it has on downtown businesses, and they quickly agreed. “Quite honestly, we were on the bubble about that already,” Frank says. “People really like the park setting, the quaintness of it. The fairgrounds did a great job for us and really helped us out in a tough spot. We probably wouldn’t have had a car
show the past couple of years if not for them. But we’ve always been a downtown business, so it’s really kind of a plus to me supporting those downtown businesses.” The Cruise-In, which also features live music, food and vendors, as well as dozens of sponsored awards, draws an estimated 600 to 800 classic cars and other vehicles, and 3,000 to 5,000 attendees. With the excitement surrounding the event’s triumphant return to Canby’s central park, Frank expects both of those numbers to be at the higher end of his estimates. The 28th annual Cutsforth’s Cruise-In will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 27. For information about the Cutforth’s Cruise-In or to register, visit cutsforthscruisein.com. CORNERSTONE WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Important Birthdays Over 50 By Matt Stutes, Certified Financial Planner
M
ost children stop being “and-a-half ” somewhere around age 12. Kids add “and-a-half” to make sure everyone knows they’re closer to the next age than the last. When you are older, “and-a-half” birthdays start making a comeback. In fact, starting at age 50, several birthdays and “half-birthdays” are critical to understand because they have implications regarding your retirement income. If you have one of these birthdays coming up, reach out today so we can help you organize all of these important dates.
50
NO. 1 & 2
59½
At age 59½, workers can start making withdrawals from qualified retirement plans without incurring a 10% federal income-tax penalty. This applies to workers who have contributed to IRAs and employer-sponsored plans, such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans (457 plans are never subject to the 10% penalty). Keep in mind that distributions from traditional IRAs, 401(k) plans, and other employersponsored retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income. NO. 3
At age 62, workers are first able to draw Social Security retirement benefits. However, if a person continues to work, those benefits will be reduced. The Social Security Administration will deduct $1 in benefits for each $2 an individual earns above an annual limit. In 2022, the income limit is $19,560. 30 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
NO. 4
At age 65, individuals can qualify for Medicare. The Social Security Administration recommends applying three months before reaching age 65. It’s important to note that if you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A (hospitalization) and Part B (medical insurance) without an additional application.
“knowing key birthdays can help you avoid penalties ”
At age 50, workers in certain qualified retirement plans can begin making annual catch-up contributions in addition to their normal contributions. Those who participate in 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans can contribute an additional $6,500 per year in 2022. Those who participate in Simple Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or Simple 401(k) plans can make a catch-up contribution of up to $3,000 in 2022. And those who participate in traditional, or Roth IRAs can set aside an additional $1,000 a year.
AGE 62
AGE 65
AGE 72
AGE 65 TO 67
NO. 5
Between ages 65 and 67, individuals become eligible to receive 100% of their Social Security benefit. The age varies, depending on birth year. Individuals born in 1955, for example, become eligible to receive 100% of their benefits when they reach age 66 years and 2 months. Those born in 1960 or later need to reach age 67 before they become eligible to receive full benefits.
In most circumstances, once you reach age 72, you must begin taking required minimum distributions from a traditional Individual Retirement Account and other defined contribution plans. You may continue to contribute to a traditional IRA past age 70½ as long as you meet the earned-income requirement. Understanding key birthdays may help you better prepare for certain retirement income and benefits. But perhaps more importantly, knowing key birthdays can help you avoid penalties that may be imposed if you miss the date. 1. If you reach the age of 50 before the end of the calendar year. 2. IRS.gov, 2022 3. SSA.gov, 2022 4. SSA.gov, 2022. Individuals can decline Part B coverage because it requires an additional premium payment. 5. SSA.gov, 2022

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
DAN REED
For the Love of Paint By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer
W
e’re all familiar with Dan Reed, the musician. Born and raised right here in Portland, Oregon, he’s our hometown hero who has been rocking and rolling across the globe with his band, the Dan Reed Network, since 1987. Incidentally, the Dan Reed Network is preparing now to unleash their exciting new album, Let’s Hear It For The King, to a fervent and anxious fanbase. But music alone does not define the man; Dan is a multifaceted artist expressing himself through a variety of creative endeavors. Most significantly, outside of his musical career, he has also become an avid and revered painter. He actually started painting back in college. He took some classes and produced some beautiful work, but when his musical career took off, painting naturally took a back seat. It wasn’t until years later, after Dan became disillusioned with the music industry and he put the band on hiatus, that he returned to the canvas. They were dark times. He had traveled the world in support of The Rolling Stones, he had reached the pinnacle of success, scaled the very heights of Mt. Olympus, but inside he was feeling empty, bereft of joy and inspiration. Painting allowed him the freedom he’d been missing in music. Without the strict “guidance” of labels and overeager A&R representatives making their demands, telling him what to play, how to play, and how to look, he was finally able to express himself more authentically. There were no rules, no borders; only the edges of the frame to restrict his flow. And it was transformative! Along with his spiritual journey (he spent years meditating and studying at a monastery), the demons
32 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
he was able to exorcise through the process of putting paint to canvas, helped him navigate those dark corridors and return to a path of wellness and light. Although he has returned to music, and the fans are all grateful, Dan hasn’t given up his “second love” this time around. Painting allows his creativity of expression to simply flow. They are all abstract pieces, informed by internal emotion and mood versus being representative, realistic compositions. They are fascinating to behold, full of depth and color, inviting thorough examination and discussion over the feelings they evoke. They are the kinds of paintings you can stare at for hours, continuously finding new and interesting patterns as they emerge. So there you have it. Dan Reed: accomplished musician and painter. Check out his work on Facebook at Dan_Reed_Art or on instagram: @Dan_Reed_Art.

” T A E M “MEAT THE BEAU BILLEAUDEAUX VETERAN FROZEN FRONTIER Proudly sponsored by
EBNER’S CUSTOM MEATS
In honor of their service
By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer United States Air Force Captain Beau Billeaudeaux was 6 years old the first time he tried to fly. The Louisiana native had awakened on Christmas morning to the perfect present: a pintsized replica of the World War II-era Curtiss P-40 Warhawk— complete with pedals and designed to be driven around. But that seemed a bit too pedestrian for young Beau.
“In my mind, it was a plane, and planes are meant for flying,” he recalls with a chuckle. So, that’s exactly what he did—or tried to do. “I always wanted to be a flier from very early on,” Beau says. “So when I got my little P-40, I put on a helmet and scarf and tried to take off and fly. Instead, I went right off the edge of the porch and broke my arm.” Sadly, Beau never joined the ranks of pilots due to poor eyesight. “I wanted my wings desperately,” he admits. “I always felt if you’re going to be an officer in the Air Force, and you want to be the best you can, you’ve got to have wings.” Yet, he still enjoyed a fruitful career with the Air Force and Reserve that spanned nearly 15 years. Beau joined the military in 1960 after earning a geology degree with a focus in petroleum engineering at the University of New Mexico. His commission with the ROTC enabled him to enter at the rank of second lieutenant.

Growing up deep in the heart of Acadiana, also known as Cajun Country, Beau learned to speak French before he learned English—a skill he hoped might help him secure a choice assignment in the military. “I was hoping for beautiful French women and wine,” he recalls with a laugh. “Instead, I got Eskimos and icebergs. They told me, ‘You’re going to northern Greenland.’” He was given a command at the top-secret Thule Air Base, which derives its name from a mythical island of ancient Greece whose name meant “farthest.” Surrounded by ice floes and fjords, the installation is the only place on Earth where four active icebergs come together. “It was four months of total daylight, four months of total darkness, and four months of half and half,” he says with a laugh. “We saw temperatures of 70 below zero. You’d spit and it would be frozen before it hit the ground.” Though remote, Thule would play a critical role in the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, one of the most significant military confrontations of the Cold War, and an episode Beau still remembers as one of the most dramatic of his career. “It was a frightening week; it really was,” he recalls. “This was before the days of satellites so we had this giant radar dish, this ballistic missile early warning system. I had 100 young men under me and I had to try to keep them calm. We came very close to catastrophic nuclear war, and we would have been the first to know about it.” Beau went on to serve assignments at Eglin and Tyndall Air Force bases in Florida and Selfridge Air Base in Michigan, before joining the Air Force Reserve in 1966 and retiring from military service altogether in 1973. “I never regretted a thing,” he says today. “I was so fond and proud of my service. There’s just something about being in the Air Force that was really neat.”

SUMMER EVENTS
Aurora Colony Days: Welcome Back! By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
I
t’s been 3 years since the last Aurora Colony Days. After a brutal 2019 winter and power outages, summer fires, COVID-19, then a long wet spring this year, Aurora is ready to celebrate the return of this event! On its 33rd anniversary, Aurora Colony Days commemorates the founding of Aurora way back in 1856 with food, music, fun, and community. Aurora City Councilor Tara Weidman tells me this is a volunteerrun event, sponsored by local businesses and the City of Aurora. She’s quick to say she’s “so grateful for the people helping with this event,” and without these volunteers organizing the event would be impossible. After a tumultuous last few years, she says Aurora Colony Days 2022 is about bringing people together in a “high quality, tight knit” celebration of music, food, and more. So what’s Aurora Colony Days all about? There are 3 days of events, running August 12-14, in the quaint community of Aurora. Friday August 12th, 4:30-10:30 PM, there’s the family-friendly Biergarten at the Old Aurora Colony Museum Courtyard, sponsored by the Aurora Colony Historical Society. This is a free event, and food and drinks will be available for purchase, including beer and root beer. You can also enjoy music from local musicians, Mae Day at 4:30 PM and Michele VanKleef at 7:30 PM. Saturday August 13th is the big day of events, including: Pancake Breakfast at the American Legion Hall, sponsored by the Aurora American Legion, 7-11 AM; Market in the Park, 8:30 AM-4:00 PM; Aurora Outdoor Antiques Market in downtown Aurora, 9 AM-4 PM; Aurora Colony Parade at 11 AM, starting north from Aurora City Park on Liberty Street, then south back to the park on Main Street NE; FREE ADMISSION to the Old Aurora Colony Museum, 11 AM-4 PM; Aurora Colony Car Show, Aurora City Park, 12-4 PM; Concert in the

Park with band Best Night Ever, Aurora City Park Amphitheater, 7-10 PM—a free event, food and drinks will be available for purchase. At the Market in the Park, enjoy such vendors as Amber’s Crafts & Dog Toys, Homemade From the Heart (fleece blankets), Black Sheep Hat Co., A Branch & Cord (macrame), Quilts For Empowerment, Lux Handcrafted Designs, Walter Barry Causey (art & paper goods). Local author Evan Chandler Ahrendt will also be reading and signing books. The music will be absolutely incredible, with an opening acapella band, followed by Portland’s hot 10-piece pop rock and funk band, Best Night Ever. But wait, there’s more! There will also be food throughout the entire day, including BBQ from Arlene Cuisine, Mexican from Lupita’s, and assorted roasted nuts from Pilgrim Nutz. Drinks will include: beer, cider, and mimosas from Pint Size Pub House; and flavored lemonade from Willamette Valley Berries. Among other treats, there will be strawberry shortcake with ice cream from Pitchpipers, flavored snow cones from Kona Ice, and assorted baked goods from Pastrysmith. And there will be the classic backyard game, cornhole, for kids and adults to play. There will also be a shuttle bus to keep you out of the heat, running every 12-15 minutes, around Aurora. Sunday August 13th will feature the Colony Classic Disc Golf Tournament, presented by Aurora Parks and Recreation, 12-4 PM, with plenty of cash and sponsor prizes. Players of all levels are welcome, Registration is $10 from 11-11:45 AM, and Shotgun starts at 12 PM. It’s been too long since we’ve celebrated this event. Come for the food, drinks, music and local vendors. Stay for the friends and community. DON’T MISS AURORA COLONY DAYS 2022!

SPREADING THE JOY OF MUSIC
On Parade By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
As the Canby Music float wound its way through the parade route in the triumphant return of Canby’s Independence Day Celebration this year, attendees were treated to the sight of a different Brian than they may have been anticipating—and a different side of the town’s mayor. While Canby Music owner and founder Brian Haines was leading the band on guitar, as expected, some of those in attendance may have been surprised to see Canby Mayor Brian Hodson on the float as well, playing the heck out of a custom drum kit. “I’ve known Brian for a long time, and I always knew that he played drums, but I had never actually seen him play,” Brian Haines says. “Finally, after all these years, I was able to talk him into joining us for a jam session.” He says he believes the special guest appearance is something Canby will remember for a long time. “To me, it really illustrates that in a place like Canby, the local politicians are just members of our community like everybody else,” he says. “They’re volunteers who are just trying to do what they can to make the community better.”
Hodson has played the drums for many years. Though his official duties don’t normally call for him to jump on the skins, it actually has happened before, including July 4th, 2017, when he played with the “Speed Humps,” a short-lived band of other community members. “He told me it was actually the first time he has played in four years,” Brian Haines says. “He did great.” Canby Music is located at 590 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. For more information, call 503-263-2263 or visit canbymusic.com.

Mid-Century Sofa Art ?
ith the advent of mass produced furniture which really took off in the ’50s and ’60s when Formica and plastics became readily available, furniture stores offered ready to buy versus made to order furniture. Often large “real” oil sofa paintings and triptychs were on sale as well to get original art into everyday living rooms at an affordable price. Furniture stores hired art studios to mass produce these original art pieces. Usually, the main artist created original paintings. Then, many copies of the original, each slightly different, was made by the studio’s stable of production artists. One of the most famous was Vanguard in California. Burr was the studio owner/artist but his paintings were
signed with many different names, such as Fleming. Often these studios would be contracted to sign with a unique signature requested by the designer, even though they all were probably painted by a varied stable of artists. We carry a wide variety of original art from triptychs to sofa art to a talented family member. We figured that with the limited wall space of the shop, we’d stock original art so, in mid-century fashion, you too can afford a piece of original art.

FIDO President and Community Impact Coordinator
SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE! “PETS ARE CRUCIAL TO THE WELL-BEING OF HOMEBOUND SENIORS. MEALS-ON-WHEELS CLIENTS REST AT EASE KNOWING THEY ARE RECEIVING NUTRITIOUS MEALS AND FIDO IS FEEDING THEIR PETS.”
- Meals-On-Wheels Nutrition Program Director
Ellison Team Homes is passionate about volunteering with FIDO (Friends Involved in Dog Outreach), which delivers pet food monthly to our own Canby Adult Center. They team with Meals-On-Wheels to distribute pet food to their recipients, who may be at risk of sacrificing their own nutrition to feed their pet companions. These donations help reduce the chances of having to relinquish pets— which is akin to losing a family member. A portion of every closed Ellison Team Homes real estate transaction is donated to FIDO. When you see us around town at community events we will also take donations for FIDO. After having worked with street youth for years and being partnered with seniors and veterans as clients, we see the value in having four-legged friends as family members. We do not believe people should have to give them up. FIDO is a 501c3 all volunteer nonprofit whose mission is specifically to keep owned pets in their homes by preventing shelter relinquishment — or worse. They support all in need with no restrictions including seniors through our AniMeals-On-Wheels local program.
Each office is independently owned and operated.
If you would like to donate, FIDO also partners with Eileen and her team at Nature’s Pet here in Canby. They have a barrel for collection of pet food/supplies, and can accept cash donations as well. To learn more about these programs, visit their website(s): fidoanimeals.org, canbyadultcenter.org, ccmow.org, canby.naturespetmarket.com As always, if you’re in need of a local Realtor® ... we’re here! CUTSFORTH’S OF CANBY
CUTSFORTH’S DELI
CUTTIN’ IT UP @ CUTSFORTH’S
The Deli That Elsie Built By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto Photography
W
hile every department of Canby’s own Cutsforth’s Market has its specialties and culture, there is perhaps no other area of the store that showcases the unique nature of this longtime family-owned and operated grocery store quite like the deli. It was started by “Canby’s Matriarch,” Elsie Cutsforth, at a time when delis were not a ubiquitous feature of grocery stores and quick stops. As manager Erica DiPari explains, Elsie adapted many of the deli’s recipes and methods from her own home kitchen—and that remains the case today. “We’ve added some new recipes over the years, but pretty much 90% are the same,” Erica says. “They’re still Elsie’s original from-scratch recipes. Nothing comes out of a box or a bag. That’s pretty neat for a deli nowadays.” Elsie Cutsforth started making potato salad in bulk in the 1960s for the Macksburg and Canby rod and gun clubs, and would also whip up large batches for baseball teams and catering events. Elsie’s Own Potato Salad was added to the menu of deli offerings in the ’90s and quickly became her most famous dish. People come from miles around for the signature side, Erica says—especially in the summertime. “July is our huge month for potato salad because of Independence Day,” Erica explains. “We sell 1,000 pounds just over those three days around the Fourth of July.” To say the recipe is closely guarded would be an understatement. The current keeper of the potato salad secret is Margarita Rodriguez, a 30year Cutsforth’s employee who originally learned it from Elsie herself. Though the store sells hundreds of pounds of the golden concoction through the dog days of summer, Erica’s team still makes it in “small” 30-pound batches—just like Elsie did. The deli offers a wide variety of other handmade salads and sides, premium deli meats and cheeses from Boar’s Head, hand-battered fried chicken and other hot à la carte items. The deli’s made-to-order sandwich and panini counter is one of downtown Canby’s busiest lunch spots, along with its expansive salad bar and selection of homemade soups— four offerings during the summer, double that in the winter months.

Too often overlooked is the grill, where customers can custom order a wide selection of quesadillas, gyros, burgers and burritos—including breakfast burritos or omelets during the morning rush. Elsie’s son, current Cutsforth’s Market owner Frank Cutsforth, initiated the ever-popular tradition of “Frank’s Friday ribs,” smoked in-house every week. “We’ve continued that ever since,” Erica says. “Our smoker is always full of racks of ribs on Fridays.” Erica and her team enjoy the busyness of the deli and the challenge of satisfying each customer’s unique needs. “We just like to make the customers happy,” she says. “Even when it’s busy, which it usually is, we always greet them with a smile, let them know we’ll be right with them. Sometimes people will have odd requests, and we try to fulfill those however we can.” The deli also offers full-service catering but requests 48 hours notice for large orders. “I always say, ‘We can help people from one person up to 500, or more!” Erica says. Cutsforth’s Market is located at 225 NE 2nd Avenue in Canby. For more information, visit cutsforths.com, call 503-266-2016 or check out the Cutsforth’s Market Facebook page.

LION’S HEART FARM
Igniting Hearts
Farm Festival By Olive Gallagher, Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
M
ark your calendars now for a not-to-miss day of summer fun for families and folks of all ages! On Saturday, August 27, from 12 PM - 8 PM, Scot Lemons and his unstoppable wife, Joanne EngermanLemons, owners of Lions Heart Farm, will be hosting the fantastic Igniting Hearts Farm Festival on their beautiful property in Aurora. The couple acquired the 15acre property in 2014, and as the name suggests, represents much more than meets the eye. The property’s name itself is derived from roots and philosophy embedded in Native American culture. The infrastructure is currently in the infancy stages of being rebuilt as a working farm, dedicated to the dream of growing plant food, lives, and community, in union with Mother Earth, with a special focus on rare and unusual plants such as heirloom seeds of the black Hopi popcorn. Along with the extensive gardens, chickens populate the farm and play the essential role of egg-laying along with green waste consumption. The entire project is designed as a walking, edible, earth-connecting experience. Free parking will be available as well as ADA assistance for anyone needing extra help. The cost is $20 per person and tickets are available for purchase on Eventbrite. Proceeds from the event will be directed towards the Lions “Heart” of the farm’s purpose and existence, building four off-grid tiny homes to house veterans who need temporary housing while they heal and get back on their feet. There will be live music in three segments, including local talents Ray and Rebecca Hardiman. The day will start off by playing favorites from the past ranging from jazz and rock to more modern tunes. Later in the day, music of the future will be played as well featuring moments devoted to Native

American drumming. From 1:30 3:30 PM, selections from the past will feature artists like Aretha Franklin and Carol King along with many other “you’re so vain,” old-time rock and roll tunes. Then from 3:30 - 6:00 PM, sacred healing music will take people from the present and into the future with an open mic during the opening act. The event will also offer a wide range of activities for the children, including face painting, henna tattoos, and a nature-based scavenger hunt. Cool “misting” stations will be stationed throughout the area to provide relief from the heat if needed from the late-summer weather. Food trucks will be serving up all kinds of yummy goodies, and there will be a drinks booth serving wine and beer. Plan to leave room for soft-serve ice cream from a station offering delicious treats sure to please any sweet tooth. Additionally, the day will feature a special bar offering Joanne’s “Special Corn from the Garden.” To commemorate the day’s festivities for all visitors, there will be a Sunflower Photo opportunity where participants can take their own photos or have help from a volunteer. It will be one of many great opportunities to capture all the special moments to remember this day. In addition, visitors can enjoy demonstrations of health and wellness practices, along with the chance to purchase an array of local-area artisanal products for sale. This is an event you won’t want to miss! Lions Heart Farm is located at 21210 Boones Ferry Rd. NE in Aurora. Christopher Reeve:
Superman I-IV (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987)
Started 44 years ago, Superman I and Superman II blew peoples’ minds! I think this franchise’s success greatly depends upon visionary director Richard Donner, who directed great movies like the Lethal Weapon series and cult classics The Goonies & The Lost Boys. These movies are action-packed, funny, and just solid entertainment (III & IV aren’t as great, but still good). The starstudded cast includes Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Ned Beatty (Otis), and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), among others. But let’s not forget Christopher Reeve, a Cornell and Juilliard School graduate, and classically trained actor. His simple spandex, dark slicked hair and curl were true to the comics, and his kind, sly, understated demeanor were fantastic—the Man of Steel was a true American hero. He played Clark Kent exactly as he should be—meek, bumbling, and clumsy, in the iconic thick black glasses. And that Clark Kent good-naturedness carries into his Superman, an altruistic and all-powerful alien who finds his humanity. Rated PG, watch these classics! 64 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Brandon Routh:
Superman Returns (2006)
The black sheep of Superman movies, Bryan Singer directed and wrote the story, who also directed the hit or miss X-Men movies and the recently acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody. Although visually slick, the pacing is a bit slow, the story too focused on romance instead of action, and Brandon Routh’s Superman is a tad stoic. That said, it’s polished and watchable, but not my favorite. Co-starring Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), James Marsden (Richard White), and Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), and others. Rated PG-13, it’s a solid entry in the Superman cinematic universe.
Henry Cavill:
Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)
Heir apparent to Christopher Reeve and bearing an incredible resemblance, Henry Cavill has 3 films under his belt as Superman and he’s fantastic! Cavill’s Superman is just as sly, kind, and softspoken as Reeve’s, but he’s much more ripped and modern in today’s superhero heyday. Ultimately, you just like Cavill and want to root for him. Directed by the polarizing, long-winded, but reliable Zack Snyder, the movies are visually spectacular, action-packed, funny, and really fun to watch. Man of Steel has a star-studded cast rivaling the original movies, including Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Russel Crowe (Jor-El), and more. BvS and Justice League are team-up movies but still Supermancentric and solid entertainment. Rated PG-13, give them a watch!
Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

THE CANBY CENTER’S ANNUAL BACKBACK DISTRIBUTION
THE CANBY CENTER’S
Backpack Distribution By Olive Gallagher, Contributing Writer
D
id you ever wonder who invented the backpack? Apparently, more than 5,000 years ago, a lone traveler named Otiz the Iceman crossed the Alps with a woodframed backpack made of skins. The backpack evolved through the ages until 1886, when Colonel Henry Clay Merriam of the Seventh Infantry, a Civil War veteran, patented a military knapsack with a complicated frame, straps and buckles. Then in 1922, The Trapper Nelson backpack came along, borrowed from a Native American design that resembled a messenger bag with shoulder straps, then it was followed by a version designed by two men in the hiking industry, Lloyd Nelson and Gerry Cunningham, who created bags with lightweight materials, straps, and zippers.

Today, The Canby Center is once again bringing their fun-filled annual Backpack Distribution to the Canby community on Saturday, August 27th from 11 AM-2 PM, located at 681 2nd Avenue in Canby. It’s a not-to-be-missed special day—last year more than 600 people came out to enjoy the festivities—and this year will include free food ranging from BBQ to sno-cones and a bouncy house for the kiddies. There will also be booths featuring other Canby organizations serving the community. The Canby Center is all about building relationships and serving the community. Founded as a faith-based non-profit in 2008, The Canby Center provides invaluable services to the general community ranging from life-skills classes to laundry facilities to community lunches served every Monday through Thursday. They also offer a remarkable, nocost membership program in which members support one another to overcome economic challenges, strengthen relationships, and learn new skills to move forward. To qualify, members must live in the area and: 1) Agree to volunteer at

the center one hour a month; 2) Attend a budgeting-basics finance class; and 3) Connect with one of the center’s trained coaches to clarify hopes and dreams. Membership at The Canby Center allows families and individuals to engage in this shared community, where they can access weekly food and clothing and find encouragement from those on a similar growth journey. The window to donate supplies for the August 27th Backpack Distribution starts on July 11th and ends on August 1st. Supplies are needed for children in grades K-12 and include the basics like paper, pencils, pens, and crayons. What items are particularly needed are supplies for the older kids, such as 3-hole paper, 3-ring binders, spiral notebooks, highlighters, pocket folders and dividers, and colored pencils. And then most importantly, brand new backpacks are needed to hold all the supplies kids need each day. Big ones, small ones, stuffed full of things or not, just as long as they’re brand new! That’s what makes The Canby Center’s Backpack Distribution so unique and special. As Christina Ramirez explained, “Getting to go back to school after COVID was incredibly special for the kids. And watching a child’s face light up when they get to pick out the exact new backpack they want is incredibly rewarding.” For more information about this wonderful event or how to donate supplies, call Christina Ramirez at 503-263-1130, or make a donation online with the memo “Back to School” at thecanbycenter.org/donate.

Disease prevention and treatment is one of the six focus areas of Rotary International. The Polio eradication project was started in 1988 to eliminate the devastating consequences of polio in the world. Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio for about 35 years. The goal is to rid the world of this disease is within reach. Since 1988 a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9% from a high of350,000 cases in 125 countries What is polio? Polio, or poliomyelitis is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infection disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. Once exposed it can attack the nervous system. Polio remains endemic, or regularly occurring, only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. There has been one case of polio in Afghanistan and seven cases of polio in Pakistan in 2022.
The average cost to fully protect a child against polio is $3. The Canby Rotary Golf Tournament raised enough money this year to provide more than 300 with protection against polio. Members are making a difference and having fun doing it!

SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Greetings! It is my privilege to serve this next year as president of the Rotary Club of Canby The Rotary Club of Canby has been connecting people with a passion for service since 1979. Our local club is part of a global network of 1.2 million friends, leaders, and problem solvers who come together to make positive change in our communities and around the world. We love Canby and are passionate about developing future leaders. We want our community to be safe, so we are beginning a new disaster preparedness initiative called, “Canby Rotary Ready”, gifting vital equipment like chainsaws and generators to the city and helping our neighbors prepare for wildfires, ice storms, or earthquakes. We have also partnered with other clubs in Oregon and Washington to raise over $140,000 for Ukrainian refugee relief. Club members both support and participate in international service projects promoting clean water, maternal and child health, literacy, economic development, peace and conflict resolution, and environmental sustainability. You will probably see our members around Canby this summer in their distinctive blue and gold “Rotarians at Work” t-shirts serving at community events like the Nothing But Net 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament July 30th, taking tickets at The Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo August 16-20, and flipping burgers at the Cutsforth Cruise In at Wait Park August 27th. If you see one of us, be sure to stop and say “hi”! Rotarians are people of action with a heart for service. We also manage to have a great time doing it! If Rotary sounds like something that might interest you, think about bringing your talent and passion to our team. Imagine what we could do together!

ince coming to town, Dick’s Canby Ford has seen substantial growth and significant increase in business and sales. Custom orders are strong, and remain the best way to make a purchase—you get the vehicle you want, you get it how you want it, and you get it at a reasonable price. And what’s more, Dick’s Canby Ford is still offering a $1000 incentive on all custom orders placed through their dealership! Dick’s Canby Ford is for sure “making some noise,” says General Manager, Shaun Weber. Poised for great achievement, they are out-performing and exceeding all expectations, and they attribute that success to you—the community. Extending his personal “thanks,” Shaun adds, “I feel like we’ve been really embraced by the community and I appreciate that.” So you’re all invited to stop by Dick’s Canby Ford and meet General Sales Manager, Ryan Lawson. “They’ll love him!” Shaun declares. Ryan’s totally approachable, and if you don’t beat him to it, he’ll be the first to make the introduction. So grab a coffee, introduce yourself, shoot the breeze, and just get to know him. Ryan’s an avid outdoorsman who drives his own Ford truck. He likes the coast, loves fishing, crabbing, clamming, and hunting. And he works a lot too! “It seems like he’s always here,” Shaun says, “getting to know everybody, getting to know the community. He’s been fantastic.” And while you’re there, check out the All-Electric F-150 Lightning. Take it for a test drive, and let the Sales Department know if it’s the right vehicle for you and if you’d like to place an order. Also, the Bronco Sport has been an “amazing” top-seller. “We can hardly keep them in stock, they’ve been selling so fast,” Shaun admits. Other

car news reports that the Ford Explorer will be getting a redesign and will be out soon. The Ford F-150 pickup has been, and still is, the most popular vehicle in the Ford line-up to date. The up-fitted Rocky Ridge truck and the Black Widow SCA Performance truck are still on the roster and impressive—which one is right is up to you to decide. Furthermore, be sure to visit the Dick’s Canby Ford website to view all current Ford promotions, specials, and available inventory. Word of caution—this website is truly an adventure unto itself—it’s so impressive and comprehensive you might not surface for days! One final note: Dick’s Canby Ford will be the lead sponsor for the Canby Rodeo, August 16-20. Dick’s Canby Ford is located at 24315 South Highway 99 East in Canby. CANBY BASEBALL:
ONE FOR THE AGES By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
Canby High School’s 2022 baseball season may have been the school’s last at the 6A classification for the next four years or more—OSAA officials decreed that Canby would play at 5A for most sports and activities starting in 2022-23— but its players and coaches made sure it was one they, and the entire community, would never forget. From the very beginning, history seemed to be on the Cougars’ side. Their first-round home playoff game against the 19th-seeded Bend Lava Bears took place on May 23—exactly 17 years to the day since the team’s last playoff victory, a 2005 first-round triumph over South Eugene. It would be a tight, low-scoring affair, something that had become a Canby specialty during the regular season, where the Cougs had won 12 of 16 games that were decided by two runs or less. “Our theme has kind of been…we get low numbers offensively, but we find a way to pitch well and play good D,” coach J.J. Stolsig said during the team’s playoff run. Canby ace Joe Brauckmiller was dominant for the Cougs that day, allowing only a single hit and run en route to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory. “He was really competitive and threw a lot of strikes,” Stolsig said of his star hurler after the game. “And that’s what he’s done all year. He’s been really good all year every time he goes out there.”
78 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
Thus began one of the most remarkable runs in Oregon high school baseball history, in which the underdog Cougars faced three straight higherseeded opponents on their home fields—and won them all. “We went into the playoffs with the mindset that everything starts over,” said senior designated hitter Clayton Langdale, the hero of the quarterfinals matchup at Mountainside. “Record doesn’t matter. Seeding doesn’t matter. It’s a whole new season.” The second round matchup would take the Cougars far from Canby, all the way down to South Medford to face the third-ranked Panthers, whom many had pegged for a deep playoff run. Instead, Canby toppled South Med in a commanding performance that was less close than its final score of 4-2 might suggest. Then came Mountainside, a grueling duel between two outstanding pitchers: Canby senior Jason Noffsinger and the Mavericks’ Austin Wolfe. The game went six innings without a single run scored, until Langdale stepped to the plate at the top of the seventh and belted a solo home run that finally shattered the 0-0 stalemate. That set up the Cougars’ first visit to the state semifinals in more than 25 years, a showdown with the perennial powerhouse Clackamas Cavaliers, winners of 26 out of 30 regular season games. The last thing anyone expected from the grind-it-out, workaday Cougars was a high-scoring barn burner, but that’s exactly what they provided, shocking the Cavs 14-9 on their home turf. It was the most the Cougars had put on the board in a single game all season. “You don’t really expect the boat race, the highscoring game in the semifinals,” Stolsig said afterward. “They just hit the heck out of the ball and kept finding ways to fight for each other.”
That, in a nutshell, was the story of this remarkable Canby team. Led by a core of 11 seniors who had played together for years, the Cougs showcased strong chemistry and an intense love of the game that was often a joy to behold. Canby’s trip to the state finals was only the second in the town’s history, the first having occurred exactly 62 years earlier, June 4, 1960, and a loss to the Seagulls of Seaside High School. Sadly, both runs ended in disappointment, as Canby was defeated by West Linn 14-0 for the Lions’ first state title in four decades. But a victory of another sort had played out in the stands of Volcanoes Stadium, which was packed with thousands of Cougar fans, and in the greater Canby community. “You brought a lot of hope to a lot of people,” Stolsig told his team in their final huddle of the season. “You brought this community together. Did you see them out there tonight? That was because of you.” Stolsig became visibly emotional talking with reporters about his 11 seniors after the game— virtually all of whom also played football, basketball, and other sports in their Canby careers.
“These guys, 11 seniors, they really care about each other, and that’s what allowed us to go on this run, was love,” he said, eyes wet and voice choked with emotion. “These guys have changed the trajectory of the program from their freshman year until now. There’s been a lot of good moments with these guys, and they battled until the end.”

BOREDOM BUSTERS FOR A SUNNY SUMMER! By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer • Illustration by Upklyak
K
ids and adults alike CAN’T WAIT for summer to roll around every year. But without fail and after a few weeks, the phrases “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do!” are inevitable. Here are some fun things to do to BUST that summer boredom before it starts! CLIMB A TREE
This might sound weird, but there’s no better way to feel like a kid or literally get into nature. Read a book or see how high you can climb!
PHOTOGRAPH
With modern cameras, almost anyone can take great photos. Look up a photo challenge or list of practice shots, and get out there. It’s actually quite fun!
TAKE A HIKE
Just getting outside in the fresh air is a great way to enjoy summer. Long or short, flat or steep, woods or beach, it doesn’t matter. Bring some snacks and drinks!
MOVIE NIGHT
Just the family, or invite friends over. Pop some popcorn, bust out the candy and soda. For a real adventure, rent an outdoor projector and watch outside on a white sheet or blank wall.

PLAY A SPORT
Go to a local state or national park, the beach, or even your backyard! If you’re not a big camper (me neither), roast some marshmallows and hotdogs in a fire pit instead. A favorite of mine and actually very easy. You just need a blender, popsicle mold and sticks, frozen fruit and juice, yogurt, and honey or agave nectar. And it’s a healthy and fun way to eat fruit.
SWIM
When it’s finally warm enough to swim in the PNW, find a creek, river, lake, or local beach. If you don’t love swimming, at least get your feet wet, collect rocks or shells, or watch the wildlife.
No, not biking. Upcycling is where you take free old junk and make it into art or something useful, like a bathtub becoming a planter box. The possibilities are endless. Look online! Anything from yard games like croquet or cornhole, to golf and tennis, sports are great for exercise, endorphins, and vitamin D. And an easy way to socialize and get outside.
PICNIC
Super easy, this just involves a basket or tote bag, snacks, drinks, and a blanket in your backyard or local park. Bring charcuterie (like quality salami and prosciutto), rare cheeses, fresh fruit, and cold drinks.

CANBY GOES TO PERU By Olive Gallagher, Contributing Writer
T
he extraordinary opportunity to travel is a privilege few would refuse, and for students at Canby High School, getting the chance to travel to Peru proved to be an unforgettable experience. This trip was organized and made possible by the efforts of Canby residents and high school teachers, Suzy Dalrymple, Jay Mull, and Linda Newhouse, along with Mrs. Debby Haring and Mrs. Heather Johnson, who helped the students in their efforts to raise money through the Canby Booster Club. This trip should’ve happened in 2020 but was postponed due to COVID, which led to a few graduates going on the trip. These adventurous trips are open to any student from freshmen to seniors, and this trip to Peru involved sixteen students and seven adults, including Mrs. Haring, Mr. Mull, a science teacher, and two Spanish teachers, Suzy Dalrymple and Linda Newhouse. Given that the major itinerary was done by Mr. Mull and Ms. Dalrymple, the adventure included Spanish immersion for the students. According to Jay, the trip was “beautiful, amazing and life affirming…you’re in awe a good deal of the time because you can’t believe you’re really there seeing the sights before your eyes!” The total cost was $3700 per student and $4200 per adult, with many students earning funds by volunteering at Canby Booster Club booths located at the MODA Center and Providence Park. Lasting twelve days, with ten days in country, their schedule included the following highlights: Day One. Arrival in Lima at 1 A.M. on June 21st on a cool evening, marking the beginning of Peru’s winter. Day Two. After sightseeing in the city, the group took a short flight to Cuzco, a city located at 12,000 ft. and former capital of the Inca Empire. This day signaled the start of the Festival of the Sun, a week-long celebration filled with dancing and festivities. Day Three to Six. The group took a two-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, a small town where they caught a train to Machu

Picchu. They then stayed for three days in a nearby small village, making side trips and hikes to unforgettable places including Intipunku and Agua Calientes with breathtaking waterfalls and hot springs. Day Six. The group headed back to Cuzco where they toured the Sacred Valley, feeding llamas, alpacas, and meeting a fourmonth old condor, Veronica, named after one of the nearby mountains. They also visited with natives who were dyeing yarn with berries and roots and looming blankets, caps, gloves and shawls. The group experimented with foods such as cuy, guinea pig, a delicacy only eaten during the festival. Day Seven and Eight. After a long eight-hour bus ride, the group arrived in Puno, home to Lake Titicaca, the world’s 2nd largest lake (and the highest) stretching from Peru to Bolivia. The group explored the lake and visited Uros, a village of native people who still live on hand-built floating grass islands. Each island takes about eighteen months to construct and they last about forty-five years. The natives live in groups of five to six houses for twenty people and share one cooking area on each island. The group also hiked Taquile Island with its unique culture where inhabitants wear different colored hats to indicate either their marital or leadership status. Day Nine. The group made a long bus ride to Chivay, a place inhabited with wild vicunas and Chilean flamingos. At 16,000 ft, this was the highest point on the trip and challenged the hardiest person not to faint. Day Ten. The group experienced a thrill of a lifetime after traveling to Colca Canyon, where they were able to watch massive Andean condors flying overhead. Day Eleven. Before flying back to Lima, the group made their last stop, Arequipa, where three volcanoes (one active) can be viewed, and visited a museum displaying artifacts and info on the human sacrifices made over centuries to appease the volcanoes. Debby and Jay acknowledged the most valuable takeaway was not only the educational and life experience, but also the opportunity for students to build confidence, while also recognizing and appreciating what we take for granted. The next scheduled trip to a yet-to-bet determined destination is on the drawing boards for Summer 2024. For more details, please fasten your seat belts and email Jay Mull at mullj@canby.k12.or.us

HISTORY
By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer t’s a good bet that Cannon Beach may be one of your favorite coastal destinations. After all, this charming beach community is a short scenic drive from the city, the perfect place to stroll the beach, shop, or enjoy an ice cream cone while people-watching on Main Street. Have you ever wondered though, about the origins of this cherished beach community? Archaeological records indicate the Cannon Beach area was inhabited by early ancestors of the indigenous Tillamook people as early as the 15th century.
