Letter From The Publisher

W

elcome to our August 2021 Issue of the Canby Community Advantage Magazine. I have been jokingly calling this the Grand Reopening of the Canby Issue when we were building it, and wow, what a publication to build! This issue is 80 pages of stories, events, articles and great offers all happening in and near Canby. This is our biggest publication in the history of our 21 years as a company, and we are truly humbled by the enthusiasm of the community and companies that help make this possible. Since this magazine is absolutely packed with so many fun summer things to do and see in and around town, let me give you a quick glimpse of just some of what you’ll find inside these pages. Let’s start with our front cover featuring the Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo. Summertime is just not complete without a day spent visiting the booths, eating the food, riding the rides, seeing all of the animals and watching rodeo riders show off their skills. We are very excited to have both of these events back on the calendar and featured in this publication! Another event back on the calendar this year is the ever popular “Slice Of Summer Concerts.” There will be two shows this year, both held at Wait Park, with some great Oregon talent to make you want to “rock n roll all night and party everyday!” Speaking of parties, the 27th annual Cutsforth’s Cruise In is happening again at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds near the end of the month. Over 60 acres of cars on display makes for a fun way to spend the day with friends and family. In addition to our regular features which include The Book Nook’s wonderful book reviews, the Rotary and Chamber pages, and legal industry tips from Reif And Hunsaker, we are proud to announce new partnerships with FOB Taproom and Art-O-Maddic! FOB Taproom will be producing an article each issue called “Tapped In,” which will focus on all things beer, beer and more beer. So if you are a beer lover, you may want to “Hop” on over and check them out. Art-O-Maddic, one of Canby’s newest stores, will also be contributing an ongoing article on some of the different artists whose work is on display at their wonderful new gallery. If you have not taken the time to visit them, please do so as quickly as you can! For this issue, we have included not one, but two historical articles for your reading pleasure. One highlights the History of Trains in Canby as an ironic celebration of the train which blocked downtown for over 4 hours last month. The second is the story of the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Memorial and the celebration of its 10th year in the city. We hope you find these articles both informative and entertaining. Also packed throughout this publication are great local deals and specials from some of Canby’s finest restaurants, retail shops, home improvement specialists and more. All in all this issue has been an absolute blast to put together, and we hope you enjoy reading it and using it as much as we loved creating it! Our next issue will be out at the end of September. Until then, enjoy the lazy days of summer. Sincerely,

Matthew Nelson, Publisher Canby Community Advantage Magazine PS: If you have a business that services residents in the local area and would like to partner with us to reach everyone in Canby and Aurora, please give me a call at 503-825-2111. 4 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

IN GOOD TASTE

FOB Taproom By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

I

f they gave awards for being the happiest about restaurants, bars and other businesses being fully reopened for indoor service, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better candidate for the top prize than Steve Puga, owner of FOB Taproom in Canby. Without a kitchen or even video lottery machines to fall back on, FOB (Friends Of Beer) had even fewer options than many other restaurants, pubs and other local watering holes that could offer take-out food and drinks while COVID-19 regulations forced them to keep their tables empty.

For months FOB was limited to simply offering to-go growlers before new guidelines opened up the possibilities of outdoor service. The taproom took full advantage of that in two ways: installing a roll-up door over a bar that opens two ways, and putting up a large tent in the parking lot that the City of Canby helped make possible. On the positive side, the outdoor bar was something that Steve has always wanted to do. “I was born and raised in Portland - don’t hold that against me,” he jokes. “But I wanted to have something like this, an outdoor, two-sided bar. And thankfully, we were able to get this done in the summertime and have this available for customers.” The months that FOB was limited to growler service only was a difficult time, he admits, not just financially, but emotionally as he watched his normally busy taproom sit empty and quiet,

day after day. But now Steve is all smiles again. “It’s all so much better now that we’re open,” he says. “I’m just happy to see our regulars coming back, enjoying things. And thankfully, a lot of new people who have moved into town are starting to find us. Seeing customers inside is a nice change.” Steve gives a lot of credit to FOB’s regular patrons for seeing them through, particularly the taproom’s Mug Club members. “Those guys really kept us alive through the whole Covid thing,” he says. “Every day I’m here, I thank them personally. I love this place, and if it wasn’t for them, we honestly wouldn’t be here. That’s not an exaggeration; it’s absolutely true. My wife and I tell them all the time, ‘If it wasn’t for you guys, we would have shut down long ago.’” The FOB is a true family-owned and run business. Steve and his son Mitch are intimately involved with all aspects of the taproom, including carefully curating the ever-changing menu of 35 craft beers, ciders, wines and other beverages offered on tap. “As a family-owned, independent business, we take a lot of pride in getting our hands on as many Northwest beers as we can,” Steve says. “At the same time, there are plenty of other beers out there that are delicious, and we always support the small companies and self-distributors. If there’s delicious beer out there, I don’t care what country it’s from or what part of the United States, we’re going to take a look at it. But we think very carefully about the different things that we bring in, and what would be fun for the community to try.” Another thing Steve has focused on since purchasing the bar in October of 2018 is improving on what was already one of its strong points: its laid-back, yet professional and inviting atmosphere. He has sought to capture the spirit of German pubs, which he frequented during his previous career in supply chain logistics that often took him overseas. “One thing that was really obvious about all the places I went to in Germany was that they were very open to all,” he recalls. “That’s what we’ve tried to create here. You can walk in whether you’re wearing a suit or a T-shirt and jeans. It’s very inviting to everybody. It’s super chill.” For the latest news about FOB Taproom events, as well as their current tap list, visit fobtaproom.com. FOB is located in the Canby Place shopping center, at 1109 SW 1st Ave.

Cutsforth’s Market Meats

WE’RE NOT A MEAT DEPARTMENT WE’RE A

MEAT MARKET

By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Jayme Romine

C

utsforth’s Market, Canby’s locally owned, independent grocery store, is known for many things, from their mouthwatering doughnuts to Elsie’s world-famous potato salad. But its roots are in meat, and that’s one thing that the store’s current meat and seafood manager, Bruce Hazel Jr., likes to keep in mind. “Cutsforth’s started as a meat market back in 1928, then evolved into a grocery store over time,” he says. “I like to tell people, ‘You know, we’re still a meat market. We’re not a meat department.’ Everybody has a meat department. I want to be their meat market, where they know they can go to get a good product for a good price, and special orders are always welcome.” For Bruce, who has been at Cutsforth’s for six years but in the business for over 40, this has led to some… shall we say, interesting requests over the years. “Oh, yes,” he says with a laugh. “People come to me all the time asking, ‘Can I get this; can I get that?’ A lot of times, it’s things like lamb kidney, pork liver, venison, but over the years, I have bought frog legs, alligator, boneless quail, squab and the list goes on.” That’s all part of being his customers’ local meat market! “I want to be that place where they know they can go to get what they need,” he explains. “I can’t carry everything, but I have the knowledge and the ability to source it for them when they need it.”

That expertise is something Bruce makes sure carries over throughout his team. “At other stores, you don’t get to talk to the meat cutter,” he says. “Everybody here is experienced. They’re knowledgeable about the product. They’re knowledgeable about how to cook the product. They know what they’re talking about, and people trust them. That’s what we’ve built over the years.” Even though he can help with interesting and unusual requests, Bruce knows that most of his customers come to him for their everyday staples, like ground beef, and he strives to make sure they carry only the best. “The big thing that we do is give them a good product for a good price,” he says. “Our ground beef is whole muscle meat, ground right here. I know exactly what goes into my ground beef, and we make it daily. Quality and freshness is so important.” Cutsforth’s also makes their own pork and chicken sausage (19 different varieties, no less!) and cuts their own steaks in-house. Bruce has also lent his unique touch to the seafood department, something he felt was a bit lacking when he first came to town. “I felt there was a lack of variety, and that was a place we could really excel by having fresh, fantastic seafood,” he explains. For those who may not have the time or know-how to make meals from scratch, Cutsforths carries a wide array of “valueadded” meals: oven-ready steak, chicken, pork and seafood dishes that are sure to impress. “That’s one thing that has really grown over the years,” Bruce says. “Customers are on the go 24-7, and they don’t always have time to make meals. So we offer a lot of prepared items that they can just throw on the grill or throw in the oven.” Those items, in particular, tend to get rave reviews. “They come back a week later and they’re like ‘That was the best ever,’” he says with a chuckle. “There’s nothing more satisfying than that, to help somebody out for a special occasion or any day of the week. That’s what we’re all about.” Cutsforth’s sources as much of their beef, chicken, pork, lamb and seafood from local producers as they can. For more information, visit cutsforths.com or call the Cutsforth’s Meat Shop at 503-266-5475.

beloved Canby tradition will drive on this summer, as the 27th annual rendition of the popular Cutsforth’s Cruise In has been confirmed for August 28th at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Events Center. The popular classic car showcase founded by the Cutsforth family and sponsored by Cutsforth’s Market has traditionally been held at Wait Park in downtown Canby for most of the event’s history. But the coronavirus pandemic forced last year’s move to the larger and more open spaces of the county fairgrounds, and Frank Cutsforth, owner of Cutsforth’s Market and founder/ organizer of the Cruise In, said he was grateful that the event was able to carry on. “We were one of the very few that had a major car show last year,” Frank says. “There were a few smaller ones but we were one of the only large ones in the state, and I think it was really beneficial to a lot of people.” Frank also believes that it was important to continue a local tradition that has been part of the fabric of the Canby community for more than a quartercentury, particularly during a year when so many other large events were wiped off the calendar. “We just wanted to keep it going,” he says. “There were so many people shuffling their feet to do something.” Organizers elected to keep the car show at the fairgrounds this year because of the f lexibility the larger venue was able to offer amid the ever-changing coronavirus guidelines. “The fairgrounds did a really good job of helping

us out, making sure we were compliant about everything. We decided to stay at the fairgrounds this year just because it gives us more options,” Frank explains. One change this year will be a return to the more traditional walk-through format, as opposed to last year’s drive-thru setup. “That’s what we’re hoping and planning for right now. It will be a walk-through unless something changes.” The event will be free for attendees, while those who want to showcase their rides will be asked to pay a nominal fee ($15 for early bird registration or $20 at the gate), with proceeds benefiting a local nonprofit. Despite last year’s significant modifications due to the continuing pandemic, the 2020 Cruise In was a runaway success, with more than 500 classic cars and other vehicles on display, and an estimated 2,000 or more in attendance. “We’re excited,” Frank says. “We have a lot of support. We’ve built these relationships over the years and it feels really good.” This year’s Cruise In will be much more like the event previous attendees have come to know and love, including burgers on the grill, live music and vendor booths. While many of the Cruise In’s longtime participants are individual collectors, its success has also been down to the buy-in from various car clubs and other groups that have joined the community over the years. “They’re kind of all in for us, because we’re all in for them,” says Frank. “Car guys have a camaraderie about them. You see them sitting outside our store or down at Gwynn’s Coffeehouse. They just like to see everybody.” It was the local community of hot rod enthusiasts that first encouraged Frank to start the Cruise in the first place. “I tell everybody, I’m really not a car expert at all,” he admits. “I’ve got my car and I love driving it, but I can’t change the oil in it, but we all get along together… I had no idea where we were going when we first started it. But people really liked this, and it’s just grown from there.” For more information, including to inquire about registering or sponsoring this year’s Cruise, visit cutsforthscruisein.com.

MEET OUR TEAM

My passion for interior design developed in my early childhood when my grandma would let me help her redecorate her home with her and when we would watch HGTV. I enjoyed the design process from start to finish and loved that you could be creative while helping people design their dream home. I had an eye for interior decorating, but as I grew older my interest advanced more towards the interior process of design. I enjoy helping clients remodel and space plan their homes into something they’re proud Faith Valdez of and a space that they never want to leave. I started attending Portland Community College in January 2020 and will graduate next month with my Associates of Applied Science in Interior Design. At McLarens Carpet One, I’m able to use the skills that I’ve gained through helping clients pick out furnishings for their home that can make a room look like a million bucks. Whether it’s new luxury vinyl planking throughout, or a whole kitchen remodel I’ve got you covered.

CLACKAMAS COUNTY FAIR AND RODEO

I

By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

n a lot of ways, the overall state of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center could be summed up in six words: “The fair is on for 2021!”

Actually, a lot of events are returning to the fairgrounds this year, along with a few new ones that relocated there for this year, including the Cutsforth’s Cruise-In Car Show and Junk Refunk Street Market. But the true marker of success for the area’s summer events calendar was always going to be the beloved County Fair Clackamas County’s largest annual event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the state. The Fair Board voted unanimously to move forward with the County Fair and Rodeo in June, based on the recommendation of Fairgrounds Executive Director Laurie Bothwell that the board move forward. “I’ve done a lot of fairs,” Bothwell said. “We have been through 100-degree weather that wasn’t budgeted or expected… And we have survived. I think we can survive this very easily. I think it would be a big mistake to not move forward with both the fair and rodeo. The phone is ringing off the hook for both.” This year’s fair will include the traditional talent show and other entertainment, with a larger and slightly modified carnival that may offer tickets based on a certain time window rather than number of rides. The Pioneer Village is also coming back, and will be bigger and better than ever. The level of excitement for this year’s fair, in and even outside the community, is unlike anything Bothwell and her team have seen. The Rodeo Board had also made the decision to move forward with the annual rodeo, citing the event’s importance to the community. The rodeo has become a beloved tradition in Clackamas County. Board member Todd Gary says, “It’s been a tradition for a long time, and there’ve been some really, really great people over the years who have poured so much into this rodeo. It’s almost unbelievable. And that’s really what’s at the heart of this event.” The fair is a cherished annual event dating back more than a century in Clackamas County, having been held annually since 1907 — with the only exceptions being cancellations in 1917-18 during World War I, 1942-45 during World War II, and 2020.

A slew of other events and attractions are also returning to the fairgrounds later this year. The Cutsforth’s Cruise-In, a popular grassroots showcase of hot rods, classic cars and other unique roadsters, will be back at the fairgrounds on August 28th. And the Clackamas County Scare Fair, a drivethru attraction that drew thousands to the fairgrounds during the pandemic last fall, will be returning through October. Last year, the first-of-its-kind attraction combined the talents of some of Oregon’s top haunted houses and production companies, including Fearlandia, Davis Graveyard, The Nightmare Factory and Creatures of the Night. It was a huge success and I’m sure we’re all thrilled to have it back again this year! The Country Christmas Bazaar will also be held late in the fall,

from November 8th through the 13th, followed by the Clackamas County Winter Fair, another holidaythemed, drive-thru attraction that debuted in 2020. This will be open from December 2nd through Christmas Eve. The Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo will be held August 17th-21st at the county fairgrounds in Canby. Tickets may be purchased online at clackamascountyfair.com. Ticket prices for the fair will be $10 for adult fair entrance, and $5 for children between the ages of 7-12 and seniors age 65-74. Children 6 and younger and seniors 75 and older get in free! Tickets for the rodeo are as follows: (Tues-Thurs) $10 general seating, $12 reserved, $13 grandstand, $20 bullpen; (Fri-Sat) $12 general, $13 reserved, $15 grandstand, $25 bullpen. CANBY ART SCENE

Art-O-Maddic Art Gallery & Creative Maker Space I

n crafting the vision and brand of Art-O-Maddic, downtown Canby’s new art gallery and creative makerspace, owner and operator Shelley Arndt turned to her favorite story, “Alice in Wonderland,” for inspiration and, in particular, the character of the Mad Hatter. “I’m a huge fan of the book, the whole story,” she admits. “I wanted something that would be fun and approachable, and I immediately thought of ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and how it still makes me feel like a kid.”

By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

And, much like the quick-change artist himself, Shelley and her husband, Eric Arndt, needed only a few weeks to transform ART-O-MADDIC OWNERS, SHELLEY AND ERIC ARNDT their space at the Graham Building into a vibrant and colorful gallery, masterfully showcasing more than 40 UPCOMING CLASSES local, regional and national artists. “We worked very hard,” Shelley says with a laugh. “It was 18-hour days for about two weeks leading up to the grand opening to the public on June 25.” Of course, that wound up being the same weekend the area was scorched by a heat wave of historic proportions — something the native Minnesotans had not bargained for, though they said they appreciated that it was a “dry heat.” The weather, fortunately, did not seem to put a damper on interest in the gallery’s work or upcoming classes. “Things have been going really well, even better than we expected,” Eric says. “We’ve had a wide variety of folks come in, and everybody has the common thread of appreciating that this space is here now. Every person who has come in here has found at least one thing that they absolutely love. It’s been very validating.” “We do hear it a lot, that people are very thankful that we’re here and that it’s incredible,” Shelley 34 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

agrees. “I feel that people have really embraced us. Everyone in this city has been amazing.” The gallery has taken shape so quickly it does almost make you think some Wonderland-style magic must be at work. The Arndts are longtime supporters of the arts, from music and theater to paintings and images that adorn their own walls, but even they did not imagine themselves owning and operating an art gallery in Canby, Oregon, before the idea hit them after a visit to Newport in February. “There just really wasn’t an outlet for artists in this area like we felt like there should be,” says Shelley. “So we came up with the idea, and the city was fully supportive, which is amazing. Everyone has been so supportive of this idea, and I think that’s the whole reason it moved so quickly.” One of the signatures of Art-O-Maddic is the Arndts’ personal touch in working with artists: sitting down with each one to hear their stories and share their own and asking them, “In a perfect world, how would you like to work with a gallery?” “We’re trying to create an artists’ sanctuary, a tribe of amazing, talented artists,” Shelley says. “But we’re also showing the community that these people are here and

what they can do. It’s amazing some of the talent that’s here, just in Canby. It’s astounding.” Virtually all of the 41 artists currently on display at Art-O-Maddic are local or regional creators in a wide variety of mediums, from paint to mixed media to photography to printmaking to sculpture, with a few national artists whose work the Arndts have supported for years. The artists’ backgrounds and experience are as diverse as the mediums and subject matters in which they work. “We have one individual who just started last year – she’s super talented – and Jac Genovese out of Newport, who’s been at it for 45 years,” Eric says. “And everything in between: hobbyists, professionals, part-timers and they’re all sharing the same wall space.” Art-O-Maddic is always looking for new artists to work with and is offering classes to new and aspiring artists in August and the coming year. COMMUNITY SOUNDS

Enjoy Concerts in Wait Park at Canby’s

Slice of Summer was one of the first live music events in Oregon to announce a come-back this year, actually making the decision to move forward with a scaled-down version of the beloved community concert series back in March, about 10 months after canceling 2020’s shows due to the onset of the pandemic.

By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

“I’m excited just to get back some normalcy,” said board chair Lisa Leir, who also administrates the community Facebook group Canby Now. “And seeing the community out enjoying a summer evening, chatting with neighbors, singing and dancing. I love it when people get up and dance.”

SLICE OF SUMMER S ummer fun in Canby is coming back this year, and a big part of that was the Canby Livability Coalition’s announcement that the popular Slice of Summer concert series will return to Wait Park in August. Slice of Summer will feature two concerts this year instead of the usual four. The first show, scheduled for August 15th, will feature legendary Oregon singer-songwriter Ellen Whyte. An Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductee, Whyte has earned multiple Grammy nominations for her astonishing vocals, percussive rhythm guitar and mastery of multiple genres, from blues to jazz to funk. The series will wrap up its 2021 season two weeks later, on August 29th, with the Jesse James Band. This rocking country music party band is led by Hubbard natives and brothers James Curtis and Jesse Slover, who have been playing together for 40 years.

Summer Concerts

A Canby tradition since 1985, the series ran out of gas in 2017 when the Canby Music Boosters (which had previously organized the concerts) was no longer able to run the event. Fortunately, the community decided that one summer without Slice was enough, and a new group of volunteers, led by Lisa, stepped forward to revive the series under the umbrella of the nonprofit Livability Coalition. The concerts feature local and regional acts and typically draw hundreds of music-lovers to downtown Canby, along with food trucks and shaved ice. Now, thanks to the coronavirus, another Slice-less summer is in the books, but Lisa says she believes the community is ready for a cautious return to tunes and boogy. “I think so, although I’ve been wrong before,” she

said with a laugh. “I think people just want their lives back. People are sick of staying home and just want to do things they used to do.” As one of the first music events in Oregon to confirm its return this year, finding talent was not a challenge, Lisa noted. “It wasn’t hard,” she said. “We let the bands that we canceled last year have first dibs, and they jumped at the offer. I’m just sorry we can’t have all four, but we felt that would be too much this year.” Slice of Summer concerts are free to the public, and it’s recommended that attendees bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on. Organizers hope to have food and drink vendors there, but those arrangements are still in the works. The series is sponsored by a number of local businesses and organizations, including DirectLink, Canby Kiwanis Club, Kahut Waste Services, Canby Lions Club,

Northlake Physical Therapy, Club Fit, Rotary Club of Canby, Freedman Orthodontics, Millar’s Point S Tire and Auto, The Davies Clinic, Canby Community Advantage Magazine, Roof Masters Inc. and Matt Olson, State Farm insurance agent. SUNDAY, AUGUST 8 CELEBRATES GLOBAL

Sleep Under The Stars Night Whether it’s in the backcountry or your own backyard, one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the outdoors is to spend a night under the stars. Gazing up at the night sky gives us a sense of peace and, at the same time, an overwhelming sense of awe. HOW TO OBSERVE #SleepUnderTheStarsNight Let’s do this! Make a day of it on August 8th. Set up camp in your backyard, pitch a tent on the patio, bring blankets to the rooftop, or lay your sleeping bags out on the back deck and turn your gaze upward. The celebration lands in the middle of the Perseid meteor showers! So, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, look northeast for the best view and count the shooting stars as you fall into a peaceful sleep. Make it an annual tradition and share your experiences using #SleepUnderTheStarsNight or #EBUnderTheStars on social media. GLOBAL SLEEP UNDER THE STARS DAY HISTORY Founded in 2020, Global Sleep Under The Stars is a unique way to encourage the world to experience the beauty of the outdoors under the same night sky. - BUILDING COMMUNITY TAKE ACTION

ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR: R AY KEEN

R

otarian Ray Keen is the Executive Director of the Canby Center in Canby, and he is a Certified Fund Raising Executive. Ray is an enthusiastic Rotarian who joined the club in July 2016. He is an active participant in the community as President of the Dr. Richard Davies First Responder Fund, member of the Canby Alliance Church, and Canby Rotary member. He is a leader who brings dedication and compassion to his work with The Canby Center and in the community.

Ray was President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Canby in 2020-2021. He was a leader in the club and the community during the challenges of a global pandemic, wildfire emergency, business closures, and

damaging ice storm. President Teresa Sasse described Ray’s commitment to service as exceptional because of his efforts on the School-At-Home student desk project. The community service project benefitted 100 local students who needed a place to work and to complete their studies at home. The heart of a servant and the faith of a humble man contribute to Ray’s action-oriented participation in providing food for those in need, raising funds to eradicate the polio virus, encouraging students to read, mentoring students who need help and encouragement, and brightening the lives of seniors during the holidays. Ray’s outstanding record of service earned him the Rotarian of the Year award in 2021. Thank you, Ray, for all that you do.

ER ADICATING THE POLIO VIRUS: ONE PERSON AT A TIME

S

ome people in our community remember the fear for a family member or friend who caught the polio virus in the 1940s or 1950s. The illness could quickly end in death and many times resulted in serious illness or paralysis. After vaccines were developed, mass vaccination slowed the spread of polio

or poliomyelitis in the United States and other countries with access to the preventative treatment. There were more than 350,000 cases of polio worldwide in 1988 when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched. Since that year, two of the wild polio viruses have been eradicated. This year there have been eight recorded cases and no deaths reported in the world. The golf tournament to eradicate polio is a fun game with a serious purpose. Players “compete” for bragging rights and do good work to raise money to vaccinate children and fund community monitoring. This year the scramble-style golf game raised more than $2,000. These funds are the latest contribution to the more than $50,000 contributed by local Rotarians to the PolioPlus Fund of Rotary International. Rotary’s vision is “to immunize all of the world’s children against polio”.

SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT SERVE. My grandfather served during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge and my father served in the Vietnam War. SERVE. As the 42nd President of the Rotary Club of Canby I join 1.2 million Rotarians serving world-wide. During the pandemic Canby Rotary built 100 school desks for students learning at home, we shared over $36,000 in scholarships with local graduates, and we supported people serving wildfire evacuees. When a person serves, they yield their own wants and needs to those of another. SERVE. Our vision for Rotary in the year ahead is wrapped up in this single word. We are energized for three new service projects that will positively affect every neighbor in Canby. “Service above self” is more than our motto, it’s our way of life.

COMMUNITY INTEREST

Canby’s Own Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

he Vietnam Era Veterans’ Memorial in Canby represents many things: a community’s appreciation for the service members and veterans who have helped keep our country safe; a promise to protect oppressed people and fight for freedom and independence; and, above all, hope for a better tomorrow. For the late Michael Breshears, one of the driving forces behind the memorial, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this August, it represented something else: a chance for healing and reconciliation for so many Vietnam-era veterans — like himself — who were not given the heroes’ welcome they deserved.

When Breshears separated from the military in 1968, he was so disenfranchised that he actually threw away his Army uniform. “I was done with the military,” he told The Oregonian in 2011. “I was angry at the way we

were treated and we weren’t thanked for what we did when we returned.” His perspective changed in 1986, when he and his wife, Irene, saw a traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall monument in Washington, D.C. “I have no idea why seeing the wall was a turning point for me, but it was,” Michael Breshears recalled. “My anger at the military and the way I was treated stopped. After seeing the wall, I ended up joining and being active in several veterans’ organizations.” The Breshearses were so moved that they, along with a large group of other veterans, civic leaders and volunteers, worked for 12 years to fundraise, design and build another spectacular memorial here in Canby, alongside Highway 99E. “From individuals to businesses, everyone had a hand in making this happen,” Randy Carson, former Canby mayor, said. “It could not have happened if it weren’t for the dedication of countless people.” The committee raised more than $1 million in in-kind and monetary donations from countless businesses, organizations and individuals to make the ambitious project a reality. The land was donated to the city by The Holland Inc., which owns the neighboring Burgerville. Hundreds of letters and notes, phone calls and emails they received over the years inspired them to push forward, the Breshearses recall. “Even though it hasn’t been easy, we just kept going,” Irene said.

MICHAEL WANTED THE MEMORIAL TO BE

a place of peace & healing

“We once got to a point when we didn’t know how we were going to raise the last $40,000 to complete the project,” said Michael, adding that he’s thankful to the Canby Rotary Club and the Knights of Columbus for hosting fundraisers in February that brought in the last dollars for the bronze statue. The plaza’s most distinctive element is “Little Orphan Annie,” the 1970 Bell UH-1 “Huey” medevac helicopter that hovers over the memorial, as if about to continue its life-saving work of airlifting wounded service members to hospitals. The Huey, which is believed to be (theoretically, at least) still in working order, was personally delivered across the country to Canby by members of the Ohio National Guard. The plaza, which is also a Blue Star Memorial, is also dominated by the bronze statue known as “A Hero’s Prayer,” which depicts a wounded soldier being carried by another soldier, with a Vietnamese girl holding the wounded soldier’s hand.

hearken back to the Southeast Asian country, including palm trees and bamboo. Michael said he wanted the memorial to be a place of peace and healing, a place to remember the men and women who served their country in all wars. “This is a humanitarian memorial, not a war memorial,” he stated. “It’s about hope. The people in the bronze statue will be looking up at the helicopter that is coming to help them or they could be looking up at the sky in prayer.” The site is overseen and maintained by the nonprofit Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial committee, with the support of the Canby/Aurora VFW Post 6057 and other local veterans’ groups. Volunteers will be at the memorial from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 to celebrate and acknowledge the 10-year anniversary of the site’s dedication in 2011.

The wounded soldier represents Army Spc. Warren E. Newton, of Canby, who was only 18 when he went missing in action on Jan. 9, 1968. The soldier carrying Newton represents Marine Pfc. Gary W. Martini, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing two other Marines during a firefight that killed him on April 21, 1967. Other elements (like the bell) celebrate Vietnamese culture. The plaza is in the shape of the Asian character “Shou,” which means “long life” or “longevity.” The plants surrounding the memorial also CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 53

How about secondary living space as kids move back home or we take in other family members? Many have realized that working remotely, they can live in different locations now, not necessarily where their “job” is located and are looking for warmer climates, or perhaps moving closer to other family members! Regardless of which scenario above you might find yourself in, we are here to help you! We all know through personal experience and years of helping others buy and sell that this process can be extremely stressful and our objective is to help ease and manage that stress for you utilizing our knowledge and long standing, developed resources to create a seamless and manageable transaction!

LEGAL MATTERS

REIF & HUNSAKER, P.C.

CONSIDER ATIONS REGARDING

Do-It-Yourself Legal Forms & Services I

t is no secret that legal services can be expensive. It is perfectly understandable that some consider saving the expense and time by tackling their legal issue by themselves. In 2021, there are many avenues available to the cost-conscious. These include form packets, online form databases, and specialty websites like LegalZoom® or RocketLawyer®, all which purport to address your issue at rates far below those charged by an attorney. At first glance, using these resources may seem like a viable alternative to the expense and time of hiring an attorney. However, going at it alone risks numerous pitfalls, many of which can go completely unnoticed for years, or even worse, remain unspotted until after your death. The following are a few notable areas where issues can arise from the use of these forms and services.

ESTATE PLANNING

shortcomings may not become apparent until you’ve had a disagreement & try to enforce the terms

The main concern with using DIY methods to draft estate planning documents is the possibility (even likelihood) that mistakes will result. Further, due to estate planning’s specific nature, you may never know the results of your DIY work – but your family will. Mistakes can result in the wrong people receiving your property, the wrong person administering your estate, arguments about your intent and desires, and avoidable taxes being paid. An especially important aspect to the estate planning process is discussing your specific desires regarding your specific estate. 60 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

REAL PROPERTY TRANSACTIONS Oregon has several specific types of deeds, and all of them are intended to do different things. When dealing with property deeds, one size definitely does not fit all. Oregon deeds differ in how they approach: (i) whether you “guaranty” that your are transferring a certain type of ownership; (ii) whether you own a certain percentage of the property; (iii) who gets your property interest if you die; and (iv) exactly which property you are transferring. The use of incorrect “warranties” and incorrect “legal descriptions” can create significant problems in the future and be expensive to “fix.”

CONTRACT DRAFTING Form contracts seem like they are easy to complete but forms are, by their nature, sufficiently general so that they cover a wide variety of circumstances. Because of their generality, they may not properly cover the specific terms of your transaction. Much like estate planning, these shortcomings may not become apparent until you’ve had a disagreement with the other party and try to enforce the terms of your contract. The common thread throughout this is that it is very difficult to know what you don’t know, especially when working in an unfamiliar area. Online forms or other types of DIY legal assistance can seem an attractive, low-cost alternative to paying an attorney. But by saving yourself money in the short term, you could be creating an issue that will cost far more for an attorney to unwind years down the road. Don’t risk DIY legal forms and services. Come see an attorney who cares about your specific legal matter and has the experience to provide proper advice.

CANBY INVENTOR SPOTLIGHT

TATE KOENIG &

The Cheese Chopper A By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

fter raising hundreds of thousands on Kickstarter and Indiegogo to bring to life his innovative new kitchen device for slicing, grating and storing bricks of cheese, Canby-area entrepreneur Tate Koenig went swimming with the sharks. Koenig appeared on ABC’s hit reality show “Shark Tank” back in April. I guess you could say he’s trying to make America “grate” again! Like every great inventor, Koenig was inspired to create the Cheese Chopper to solve a problem he personally faced: enjoying cheese by the “loaf,” without messing with knives or risking the ends going bad before you finish the block. The Cheese Chopper solves all of these problems, serving as a storage vessel for big blocks of cheese, along with a manual conveyor belt and three attachments for slicing or grating, all without the fear of cut fingers or messy cleanup. A Ninety-One School and Canby High grad who went on to study business at Oregon State University, Koenig says he began toying with prototypes for the Cheese Chopper three years ago, after a friend of his badly cut her finger while slicing up a brick of cheddar. “We went looking online because we said, ‘There’s got to be something out there. There’s got to be a better way to cut cheese,” says Koenig (who also goes by the nickname “Mr. Cheese” after his favorite food and playing into his fondness for groan-worthy dad jokes). “But we searched and searched, and there was nothing available. There was nothing out there on the market.”

After 36 prototypes, Koenig finally settled on an effective and marketable design - a product that not only worked the way he wanted to, but was also easy and even fun to use. In April 2020, he launched his crowdfunding campaigns with the hope of raising $15,000, but the response was cheddar than he would have ever brielieved. Both campaigns attracted thousands of backers and raised a combined total of more than $210,000. It was near the end of the campaign that Koenig got an email from the producers at “Shark Tank,” who were so impressed by the product (and his trademark “That’s What Cheese Said” shirt) that they invited him out to film even though the audition period for the show’s 12th season had already closed. Koenig describes the whirlwind experience as fun, exciting, and intense. Because of Covid-19 protocols, he had to test negative for the coronavirus over two weeks, then quarantine for an additional nine days once he arrived. As for enforcement, apparently, ABC takes Covid seriously enough to make Dr. Fauci look lax: “They said, ‘No hard feelings, but we’ve got cameras. If you step in the hallway, we just hand you a plane ticket home.’ And I’m a pretty active person. I struggle to sit still at all, let alone in a hotel room for nine days” Koenig recalls with a laugh. “Then, from there, they take you down and throw you right into the Tank. It was very unique, to say the least.” Though Koenig did not end up getting an offer from the Sharks, the primetime exposure has certainly been good for business. “People love it,” he says of his customers. “The one complaint we get is, ‘Dude, I’m eating so much more cheese now.’” Koenig is also working on new creations, including his latest, the Pizza Pack: a Tupperware-like system for storing pizza by the slice without trying to figure out how to fit the box in your fridge. If you’d like to order the Cheese Chopper or one of his clever t-shirts, please visit cheesechopper.com. You can also follow him on Instagram (@tatekoenig) to stay updated on all of his projects.

RECIPE

Refreshing Summer Drinks Hot summer weather means we need to stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water, of course, but when you want something more flavorful, try out some of these ideas to keep things interesting.

WATERMELON LEMONADE:

CUCUMBER MINT GLOW WATER

DOLE WHIP LEMONADE

Combine half watermelon juice and half lemonade. To make it even more fun, freeze watermelon chunks ahead of time to use in place of ice cubes. They won’t water down your drink, and you have a snack once they thaw!

In a pitcher, mix 3 cans of seltzer with slices of cucumber and lemon, then add 3 sprigs of mint. Stir/muddle to release more flavor. So refreshing!

In a blender combine 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup lemonade, and 1/2 cup coconut milk. Blend until smooth, then pour and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings *recipes reprinted from delish.com

CANBY HISTORY

THE HISTORY OF TRAINS IN CANBY

Congress that promoted the construction of a “transcontinental railroad” across the United States. Several companies were selected to lay rails along various routes, with the Willamette River crossings controlled by an outfit known as the Oregon and California Railroad, more commonly known as the O&C line.

By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

Trains, and the railroad on which they run, are such a part of life in Canby that many residents take them for granted. For others, they can be a source of frustration — particularly when a loud horn interrupts a pleasant conversation at Gwynn’s Coffeehouse or a train blocks access to downtown Canby for any extended amount of time. But there’s actually a lot of interesting history behind how the railroad came to be here and why the trains do what they do.

O&C was owned by the notorious rogue Ben Holladay, which he had created out of the ashes of the illegally incorporated

The first rails were laid in Canby just after the city plats were filed in August 1870, and in 1873 the railroad depot was built near what is now Northwest First and Grant. Styled No. 11, it replaced the first depot, which was knocked down in a windstorm in 1871, the same year it had been constructed. But the story actually starts a decade or more earlier, with the passage of the Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862, a series of acts of

Oregon Central Railroad of Salem. Born in 1819 to William Holladay, a wagon guide in Bourbon County, Kentucky, he learned the freight business at a young age and left home in his late teens for Santa Fe, in what was then Mexico.

Holladay made a fortune in stagecoach routes, particularly To get a supply of Blue Bags with for the postal service, and garnered the nickname “The Box 184 Aurora 97002 meowvillage.rescue@gmail.com An allmeowvillage.org volunteer PO 501(c)3 non-profit based in Aurora, Oregon theBags Meow To get a supply of Blue with Village account label An all volunteer 501(c)3 non-profit based in Aurora, Oregon the Meow Village account label Our mission is to rescue feral and abandoned cats in need. It’s difficult to overstate just how important the railroad was to the early economic and cultural development of the town. As the agricultural industry grew in the Canby area, the tracks were soon lined with warehouses, including one owned by William H. Bair, who ran a wholesale produce and meat business that was so successful he virtually ran most of the local trade and government in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Locally grown products included grain, hay, potatoes, dairy products, turkeys, flax, prunes, rhubarb, asparagus, berries, nuts, livestock, lumber, bulbs, fresh flowers and nursery stock. The depot sent trains loaded with these goods to destinations throughout the United States.

“Citizens of Canby and vicinity to the number of several hundred gathered at the depot and along the tracks Thursday noon to get a glimpse of the famous old bell as it passed through on its way from Philadelphia to the Exposition at San Francisco,” newspapers recorded. “The special train bearing the historic relic arrived shortly after one o’clock and although it did not stop it slowed down sufficiently to permit one to obtain a fairly good view of the bell.” One of the most colorful episodes in town history occurred on the Canby railroad in January 1918, when Clackamas County Deputy Dick Garrett was sent to be on the lookout for a reported shipment of bootlegged whiskey that was being disguised as luggage on a passenger train. Undercover to hide his status as a law enforcement officer, Garrett boarded the train and soon found what he was looking for. Here’s how the Canby Herald recorded the incident: “Sure enough, there was a trunk, and Holy Moses, there was another one, and then some suitcases,” the newspaper said. “Dick began to swell and gnash his teeth... and sailing forth he found the owner of the booze, who was about half tanked, and it was an easy matter for Dick to keep in touch till the Sheriff could be notified.” (CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE)

In 1913, the Canby Depot added a “second spur,” as P.E.&E. opened the new Molalla-Canby line in a move that was breathlessly covered by the local Willamette Valley Irrigator: “Some may say we attach undue importance to the Molalla line, as we are on the wrong end of it to deserve any benefit,” the paper editorialized in September 1913. “We are on the receiving end — considering what that means. All the traffic to and from Molalla must pass through our doors. “Everyone from the Molalla country who passes through Canby in the future must stay here for an hour or so both going and coming — isn’t that worth something? Then also, it has often been proven that if you make it easier for people to get to any place, more of them will come.” Canby’s celebration of the nation’s independence was particularly lively in 1915, as hundreds gathered at the Canby Depot in July of that year to wave as the Liberty Bell passed through town on its way to the Panama-Pacific International World’s Fair in San Francisco. THE HISTORY OF CANBY TRAINS ... continued

Unfortunately, one of the bootlegger’s accomplices arrived before Sheriff Wilson and recognized the deputy in disguise. The unknown criminal grabbed two of the suitcases and disappeared through an opening in the roof before Garrett knew what was happening. He made his getaway into the dark and was never heard from again. In the meantime, the bootlegger, knowing the jig was up, decided he might as well tip up the jug. “Sheriff Wilson arrived soon after and armed with a search warrant,” the Herald reported. “Here he found the man who gave his name as Brown with the finest bunch of California joy water that some of our sports say that ever came to Canby, all laid out on the floor.” The next day, Brown pleaded guilty to having 200 quarts of whiskey in his possession and was fined $400 and 200 days in jail. He was saved by his wife, who went to Oregon City and paid the fine (given the tongue lashing he no doubt received, he might have rather stayed in jail). The Canby Depot served the community well for over a century, as it grew from a small farming town into a thriving, active city of more than 10,000 souls. The station served passengers as well as freight, and even handled telegraph service. Mail came and went by steam and later diesel train, under contract. Thousands of carloads of potatoes, grain and other agricultural products from local farms went out by rail before and after World War I, when the three large commission offices operated here.

Its stationeers included Archie Markee, who served as stationmaster for 35 years until his retirement in 1958, and Herman Bergman, longtime Southern Pacific Railroad employee who turned out the lights when the Canby Depot closed in 1975. Both were known for their many contributions to the community in which they chose to live and work. By the late 1970s, the then-107-year-old structure had been decommissioned and was on the verge of being torn down. Fortunately, starting in 1978, a grassroots movement had started in Canby to have the depot designated a historic structure and turned into a museum. A Save the Depot Committee, headed by local historian Myra Weston, was formed to raise money to move and restore the historical building. The effort received more than $20,000 in private contributions, along with donated materials and services, and a $20,000 Community Development Block Grant. The group also used materials from a 1907 warehouse addition to repair and restore the tattered depot. It took five years, but the group eventually raised enough to remove, renovate and relocate the aging structure three-quarters of a mile down Northwest 1st Avenue to its new home near the Clackamas County Fairgrounds — a journey that took almost an hour. The rechristened Canby Depot Museum was dedicated in October 1986, with Bergman serving as master of ceremonies and Markee (who, by then, was 98 years old) in attendance. As for trains stopping on the tracks in modern day... well, as recently as 2009 Oregon had laws on the books that prohibited trains from blocking road crossings for more than 10 minutes, except in cases of equipment failure or breakdown. But when the state attempted to enforce the rule on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company, the company sued and won. The judge, current Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, found that Oregon’s attempt to regulate railroads in this way was preempted by federal law. Numerous, similar regulations in other states have also been struck down over the years. So for now, we will just have to be patient when the trains block the roads, until the laws can be changed on a federal level.

ARTS & CULTURE

Jeff Jurrens By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer

J

eff spends his days painting in a studio on a Chehalem Mountain ridge in Cornelius, which he shares with his wife Toni, who does ceramics work. Interestingly, it took two hairpin career changes to get there. The original plan was to play the piano, so he got formal training in composition at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Then, he spent the next 30 years as a firefighter before retiring as a Hillsboro fire marshal in 2005. Then came the Rothko. For a full half hour in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, he stood in front of a painting by the legendary painter, “transfixed.” Toni suggested that if he loved it so much he should paint himself. He’s been doing so for ten years - all the while listening to music, his first love. The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity: How do you get your ideas or inspiration for a piece? “I think a lot about color, shapes, and the sequence of making a piece. Concepts just assemble in my head. Occasionally I have a complete vision & some of my best stuff comes then. Generally, it’s an interactive process. Accidents are the path to original work. In other words, I paint over stuff a lot. What I don’t do is paint ideas or messages or intend meaning. I do it to please myself.” Describe the process of making a painting, from start to finish. “In the beginning, I just bought paint and

started doing something. It was the way I learned what I could do. Nowadays I have some concept either hazy or formed, colors being the first concern. As I’ve gained more control over what I want, I take more time, work in layers and try to discipline myself to not work too fast. Paintings now take a week or more.” Do you listen to music while painting? “I can’t paint without it. All kinds. From Debussy to Miles Davis, lots of R&B, ambient, Afro-pop, Brazilian and Jon Hassell. I have no doubt it influences the work in some way but it’s subconscious, if it does.” And you share the space with Toni? “Toni started doing hand-built ceramics in high school and always wanted to get back to it. She makes dinnerware, vases, nameplates/signs and is looking for new niches to work. Toni still has a full-time job but will retire in a couple years, and her business plan for Crusty Eye Ranch Studios is our future.” How may people see and buy your work? “People can contact us through the website at www.jeffjurrens.com, and I’m also on Instagram @jeff.jurrens.”

MEET THE ATHLETE

ALLISON BASSETT By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

A

llison Bassett’s senior year at Canby High School was not what she would have ever expected, but it was absolutely one she will never forget. After a year of contending with the coronavirus pandemic and other challenges, the 2021 graduate capped her final year in public education in the best possible way: by helping lead the Canby Cougar girls golf team to a Three Rivers League conference title.

In the midst of a difficult year, the golf team patched together a storybook season: winning their first match after only one week of practice (“It was at that moment I realized what my team could do,” Allison recalls, “and what I could do.”) and ending the season victorious in four of their last five. “I credit the success to my team’s determination with the sport even throughout the pandemic,” she says. “After such a challenging period of time, winning the Three Rivers League title for golf was such a rewarding feeling. COVID-19 has presented many obstacles, so for our team to come out and win the title was very inspiring.” The road to the championship was certainly no cakewalk, though, as the competition included district powerhouse West Linn. “They have won many titles in the past years, so to end that streak was remarkable,” Allison says. “I felt that my hard work and dedication had finally paid off once I held the trophy in my hands.” And by that, she means years of hard work and dedication. Allison practically grew up on the links and started golfing almost as soon as she could hold a club. “I have been golfing since I was about 5 years old,” she says. “My dad loves the sport, and he introduced me to golf.

“I turned my confusion and frustration into motivation.” I started at a young age with a golf coach who, to this day, still coaches me occasionally.” Still, the sport didn’t really become a priority for her until her sophomore year of high school... just in time for the pandemic to shut most athletic activities down. The following year, COVID-19 again cut her junior campaign short after only two weeks of practice, but she made the most of the lockdown. “With the season ending abruptly, I turned my confusion and frustration into motivation,” she recalls. “I used the extra time to play as many rounds of golf as I could. As I kept seeing my score improve, it motivated me.”

Bassett is also a part-time employee at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City, which afforded her plenty of opportunities to play a few rounds. Her involvement in Canby High’s Concert Choir and the Cantalinas were also a great outlet for dealing with the frustrations of the pandemic. Bassett will continue her education at Oregon State University this fall. She plans to study marketing at the OSU College of Business. “I do not have any current plans to continue my golf career,” she admits, “but am keeping my options open in case the opportunity arises!”
