In addition, Webber Consulting will be on hand to wipe old hard drives, while the Canby Lions Club will be collecting eye glasses, cell phones, and hearing aids. The Canby Police Department will also have volunteers available to safely dispose of old prescriptions.

A

s most of us suspected, the wrath of 2020 was not bound by dates on the calendar.

Shortly after we entered the new year, Oregon was devastated by a particularly destructive ice storm, placing 9 Oregon counties in a state of emergency and leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without power. Many living in Canby and the surrounding areas were without electricity for a week or longer!

In response to the crisis, Arlene Anderson of Arlene’s Cuisine, motivated by nothing but her sincere desire to help the community, jumped to the rescue. Although Arlene herself was without power for 6 days, her generator kept her refrigerators cold and her gas stove allowed her to continue cooking. Arlene found herself in a position of being able to help in the one way she is especially suited for: by cooking meals for people who were unable to cook for themselves.

She contacted friends and neighbors in the area, who not only agreed to host but also helped spread the word, organize everything, and make it all happen. With help from her husband Kip, her employees, and several volunteers (including North Marion High student leaders who collected dessert and drink donations from other local businesses), she was able to serve over 500 meals over the course of 5 nights in 5 different neighborhoods, and all free to the community!

Arlene generously purchased all of the food supplies out of her own pocket (except for the donated desserts and drinks), cooked all of the food, and drove her mobile unit around

to serve the meals. Her kindness and generosity has not gone unnoticed; grateful people donated over $5000 to support her efforts, but of course Arlene kept none of that for herself. Some of it went towards the cost of the food and compensating her helpful employees, but the remaining $2400 was donated to the North Marion Service Integration Team, Love INC., and the Canby Center - all to continue helping the community!

Sarah Chapin grew up in Southern Oregon and is a single mom with three wonderful kids at home. She attended Portland State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history.

She then attended beauty school before landing in the real estate industry, attracted by the flexibility it offered to build her career while still investing in home and family.

Outside of work, her interests include the love of the outdoors, watching her kids play sports and spending time with family and friends.

Born and raised in Gresham, Nicole Delozier moved to Canby 20 years ago where she and her husband have raised their three boys. She has a background in construction project management.

She loves the construction side of home building — which she calls “sticks and bricks” — and which led to a marketing and sales position with Legend Homes and eventually her desire to pursue her real estate license.

Cindy McGraw

Nicole says her passion has led her to be involved with building or remodeling numerous houses. “Watching something go from ‘dirt’ to someone’s home is very fulfilling!”

Cindy McGraw grew up in Sunriver in a real estate family. She moved to the Willamette Valley to attend Linfield College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

She later attended Mt. Hood Community College and worked in health care before changing “hats” to real estate. Cindy and her husband have raised two kids and still reside in rural Canby. She enjoys spending time with her husband and family.

GUACAMOLE BOWL Cuisine

E

very restaurant has a signature dish that it’s most known for. The newly opened Guacamole Bowl Cuisine in Canby is unique, however, in offering its specialty to all guests - free of charge! “Our concept is to make fresh guacamole, complimentary for each table,” said owner and manager Francisco Javier Barajas.

Barajas was a partner in the previous restaurant that occupied this space, another Mexican eatery known as Los Dorados.

When he became sole

owner, he wanted to bring a new name and a concept that reminded him of his childhood, growing up in the Mexican state of Michoacán. “There were avocados everywhere,” he said with a laugh. “As far as the eye can see. All the land was covered with avocados. I even had a small avocado farm.”

He was also driven to feature the buttery Mexican fruit because of its health benefits, he said. “It’s very healthy,” explained Barajas, who also owns a small c h a i n of Me x ic a n grocery stores with locations in Wilsonville, Portland and Beaverton.

Barajas’ guacamole is made in the traditional style, featuring a unique blend of avocado, onion, cilantro and salt. It’s made and served tableside with chips and salsa.

The restaurant’s menu includes a wide variety of traditional favorites and unique recipes.

Their specialties include amazing fajitas, with your choice of meat marinated in their secret sauce, delivered sizzling hot over a bed of sautéed onions and green peppers.

style fajita, so you don’t have to be a carnivore to enjoy this awesome dish!

You also may be tempted by the Guacamole Bowl Special: your choice of roasted chicken or flame-broiled carne asada, plus prawns and mushrooms sautéed in a sauce of butter, garlic and mild spices.

For the indecisive diner, try the Tour De Mexico, a smorgasbord of favorites including carne asada, enchilada ranchera, chile relleno and taco ranchero. Entrees are served with Spanish rice, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and tortillas, so there’s no way you’ll leave hungry.

Though the Guacamole Bowl’s bar is closed for seating while the area is being remodeled, the restaurant still features a full complement of beverages and soft drinks, including homemade margaritas, mojitos and beer.

“I invite the people of Canby to come try our service,

and our food,” said Barajas, who boasts more than 20 years in the restaurant business. “I think you’ll love it. Our fresh guacamole can’t be beaten.”

THE SENIOR ONEONE-ACTS AT CHS

resh off their successful retelling of the holiday classic The Cinnamon Bear last December, Canby High School Theatre made a quick return to the (virtual) stage. A total of six one-act plays were presented in February, all directed by Canby High School seniors and starring CHS students. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the magic that they made:

ALIEN INVASION

Alien Invasion is a comedy that was written and directed by senior Eryn Thorsrud. It tells the story of three aliens who live together on Earth, though none are aware of the others’ extraterrestrial origins. Things take a turn for the worse when one character’s past comes back to haunt them all.

Eryn says the initial idea came from a writing prompt she came across on the internet, but the story “came to life” during early quarantine. “It was a very dark time and I wanted to channel some happiness,” she recalled. “I hope those who see my one-act are able to smile and laugh.” She also says her favorite part has been working with her cast, which includes Tanner Bedortha, Brynn Spoon, Audrina Brown, Judith Ruiz and Sheila Sterns.

ARTIFICIAL EMPATHY

Sticking with the sci-fi genre, Artificial Empathy is a one-act written by Hunter Miller, a drama student from Salem. The play observes a scientist, Dr. Lee (played in Canby’s version by Ainsley Beck), preparing to share her life’s work with the world. The play also follows inquisitive reporter Lilith (Carter Ward) and a robot called AVRI (Brian Tackman), whose sole purpose as an “Artificial Empathy Bot” is to provide mental health care to its clients.

Things go downhill when AVRI starts acting a little too much like a human.

“When I read this one-act for the first time, I was immediately enthralled by it,” director Meridian Lattig shares. “I enjoy opportunities to showcase work from my peers, and Hunter mixed elements of sci-fi and moral dilemma with so much flair. Artificial Empathy is a gift that keeps on giving.” The play is a collaboration between South Salem and Canby High Schools. Both Hunter Miller, who also serves as assistant director, and Brian Tackman are South Salem students.

PORTLAND BLOOD SLAM

If science fiction is not your thing, how about a slam poetry monologue in which the character describes their strange encounter with a mysterious and alluring fanged woman, who takes her through the “wild” side of Portland.

Such is the plot of Portland Blood Slam, directed by Cousteau Lattig.

As soon she read the monologue, Cousteau knew she had to produce it. “It’s the perfect mixture of comedy and grit,” she says. “Slam poetry is a format that I have always been interested in, so that definitely impacted my choice.

It also makes the one act very unique.”

Other productions include ¿Que Tú Qúe?, directed by Itavi Stearns; He Said She Said, directed by Elizabeth Hanthorn; and Sindication, directed by Katrina Garrett and Shelby Winkel. The Book Nook

T

he Book Nook has moved multiple times since it first opened in downtown Canby in 2017, but you could always find it somewhere in the Graham Building on the corner of Grant Street and Northwest 2nd. Until now, that is. You will now find Canby’s beloved independent bookseller across the street from its longtime home, in the corner of the Caldera building (formerly known as Parsons Canby Pharmacy).

“We’re really excited to be in this new space,” said Book Nook owner and operator Megan Waterman. “You’ve probably noticed the new windows and doors that have gone up on the Grant Street side. We are excited about that.”

The “new” doors and windows are actually more of a return to the original layout of the building, back when Parsons first opened back in 1954. In another sign of history repeating itself, The Book Nook’s display counters also came full circle with the move, as Waterman had originally acquired them from Parsons when the pharmacy closed.

“It’s exciting, but bittersweet,” Waterman said of the move. “Our former landlords had been incredibly supportive and encouraging from the very beginning of our journey, having been booksellers themselves in the past, and we were sad to leave them.”

That said, the Watermans are excited to be working with Caldera owner Daniel Godfrey and to be moving into a building that holds such a special place in the hearts of many longtime Canby residents. “We know there is a lot of nostalgia with this particular location and hope that we can honor that by keeping the space alive with gifts and books and community,” Waterman said.

The new space is about 500 square feet larger than the bookstore’s former location, and offers better visibility for a retail enterprise. In their old location they were regularly told that it was hard to find them, but that problem is no more. The Book Nook is now more visible than ever and they are ready to put their best foot forward for downtown Canby. “We believe in the vision of a healthy, vibrant, small-town downtown and want to be a part of making that vision a reality.”

The store has been able to expand many of its offerings with the larger space, including more new releases and local authors, as well as children’s items, board games, gifts, puzzles, stuffed animals, coloring books and even art supplies. “We’re all about celebrating story; that’s what we’ve always tried to do,” Waterman explained. “So you can read a story, or you can create a story. And we support local artists that tell their own stories in all kinds of different mediums. There’s just so much talent in this area, and we’re excited to showcase that.”

The Book Nook has also significantly expanded its children’s area with books for every reading level, as well as other educational and fun items for kids. They also offer a cozy, friendly shopping experience for those on the hunt for new books, used books, graphic novels, vintage books, audiobooks, gifts, games, puzzles, art supplies, stationery and more. BACKPACK BUDDIES - Helping feed the “food Insecure” within our community There is no possible excuse for children to go hungry in this country. Yet it happens --- every day, in every community --- and in our community. Hunger most often affects children from low-income families. The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on the American economy and the reality is that far more Americans, including children, are facing hunger and poverty today.

Backpack Buddies is a volunteer-run program that provides nutritious weekend food packages for students identified as living in “food insecure” homes. Imagine going home to an empty or sparsely filled cupboard.

Knowing you will have food to eat every day contributes to a child’s sense of security and stability.

Having nutritious food, contributes to healthier students who are more ready to learn.

Canby Rotarians raised funds to purchase food that is easily prepared by elementary, middle school, and

high school students. Food choices include fresh fruits, oatmeal, milk, soup, granola bars, and other nutritious and appealing food items.

The Canby Center and Canby School District work hand-in-hand to ensure that students have food for the weekends and are ready to learn Monday morning.

Canby Rotary Club members are partners of The Canby Center to pack the food for students in special bags that are delivered to local students through their school.

Programs like Backpack Buddies turn visions into actual actions. Steady progress to ensure no child is hungry is possible in Canby.

WHO ARE ROTARIANS?

Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world.

Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.

When wildfires raged east of Canby in September, local Rotarians took action to help emergency responders and neighbors who evacuated their homes and businesses which were threatened by the Beachie Creek, Riverside, and Eagle Creek wildfires.

The Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center became an evacuation and information center for those displaced by the wildfires.

Rotarians volunteered at the evacuation center to build temporary stock pens and to assist with the set-up of the camping area. Nearly 1700 animals were housed at the fairgrounds in the Ely Arena, Rosebrook Arena, and the rodeo grounds. Many areas sustained heavy use in a short period of time.

After people left the fairgrounds to return home, Rotarians worked with Canby Rodeo Association and Future Farmers of America members to disassemble the pens and clean-up.

During the evacuation a number of the panels used for the temporary stock pens were damaged. Canby Rotarians raised $2,000 to purchase 24 replacement panels and donated the new panels to the fairgrounds.

Building strong working relationships in the community means working together to make good things happen.

Rotary is an international service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non-political and non-religious organization open to all. There are more than 1.2 million members of Rotary Clubs in the world. There are 70 members of the Rotary Club of Canby.

Members of the Canby High School Interact Club, sponsored by Canby Rotary Club, include young women and young men who are as young as 14, sophomores through seniors, and with diverse interests and backgrounds. This community service-oriented club is an opportunity for students to plan and execute meaningful and interesting projects they design.

Members of the Rotary Club of Canby, chartered in 1979, include men and women from their 30s to their 80s in age. They are business owners, non-profit executives, government officials, medical professionals, and many executives in private and public positions. Rotarians represent a cross-section of the business and professional services of the community. February’s Ice Storm Dealt a Devastating Blow to Our Historic

MARK PRAIRIE SCHOOLHOUSE

I

n our February issue we detailed the history of the Mark Prairie Historical Site. Just after publication of that article, the historic ice storm that pummeled the Canby area also dealt a crippling blow to one of the area’s last remaining one-room schoolhouses, located on the former Mark Prairie homestead on South Mark Road near Canby.

On the night of Lincoln’s Birthday, Feb. 12, two large oak trees toppled over on the 120-year-old structure, causing massive damage. “We had some of the worstlooking damage I’ve seen anywhere in the county so far,” said Mark Prairie Historical Society president and family descendant Judi Aus. “The tree fell on the back part of the schoolhouse and caved in the roof. We had oak tree limbs and oak trees down everywhere.”

The trees fell on the back part of the property, a section of the building that is slightly newer than the original one-room schoolhouse. Originally used as a woodshed, it was eventually attached and turned into a kitchen.

A tree service assisted in the initial removal process of downed trees and limbs, while MPHS board members and other community volunteers helped recover historical artifacts. While some items were damaged beyond

repair, most were safely recovered, including a 40-foot canvas banner of uncertain origins, which contains the name of a number of local and historic businesses and is at least 70 years old.

In March, 19 volunteers from Mark Prairie Historical Society, the Rotary Club of Canby and the local community came together to remove all of the contents from the schoolhouse, including desks, tables and chairs, and take them to storage while the building is being repaired. “We’ve got a good team and we’re dividing up responsibilities,” Aus said. “The community is being so helpful, and I’m just so grateful for that. We’re so blessed in so many ways.”

The board has assembled a team to lead the repair and renovation of the historic structure, which includes Portland firms ARCIFORM and Froelich Engineers.

The work began with drawing up and implementing plans to brace the building to prevent further damage or collapse from the weakened structure.

They also did an initial review and brainstormed differing approaches to remove the collapsed section of the roof. Their next step will be to develop a demolition plan in accordance with MPHS historical guidelines and objectives.

“The board of directors is currently working with the insurance company and ARCIFORM to restore the building,” Aus said. “It takes a lot of conversation and studying of the insurance policy in order to know what is covered by insurance and what we will need to raise money for in order to cover costs.”

The restoration project will be funded through different avenues, including insurance, donated materials, volunteer work, and possibly grants. Some of the materials may be salvageable and will be used.

“Do I NeedAn Attorney?”

Going through a divorce can cause stress and anxiety.

One of the first questions someone considering divorce asks is: “Do I need an attorney?” While there is not a simple answer and often “it depends,” the safest route is to consult with an attorney. The following are several avenues available to the prospective Oregon divorcee.

DO IT YOURSELF DIVORCE: If you and your spouse agree on all issues arising regarding the dissolution of your marriage, you may be able to complete and file the necessary dissolution forms yourself. The Oregon Judicial Department maintains self-help forms online. However, using these forms comes with an entire series of pitfalls, including doing serious harm to your legal rights by waiving or agreeing to something that cannot be undone later. If you choose to go at it alone, it’s still worthwhile to hire an attorney to review your documents prior to filing anything with the court. A lawyer can confirm your interests are adequately protected, doublecheck forms to ensure the court will accept the filing and that the substance of your agreement is acceptable, and review your settlement to point out potential issues that might come up in the future.

UNCONTESTED DIVORCE: Despite the availability of self-help forms, many parties use an attorney to manage their uncontested divorce. Family law involves jumping through many hoops, and an attorney can prepare the required documents and file everything online. A divorce attorney can also ensure the general judgment dissolving your marriage properly recites any agreements between you and your spouse. Additionally, if you are having trouble communicating with your spouse, your attorney can communicate with them on your behalf.

Even if you believe you and your soon to be ex-spouse are in complete agreement regarding your divorce, that situation can change quickly and it’s helpful having someone in your corner to address things as they come up.

There are many trained mediators available throughout the state. Some mediators are retired judges who offer a valuable perspective on how courts may view your issues if you can’t settle and take things to trial. The mediator can help you reach an agreement on some or all your issues. During mediation, the parties are not required to reach an agreement and the mediator has no decision-making power over the divorce, so you cannot be “forced” into accepting an offer that you are uncomfortable with. If the mediation is not going well, either spouse may terminate it. Mediation may be conducted with or without attorneys present. People should also be aware that mediation rules may vary depending on the county your divorce is filed in.

WHEN YOU MAY NEED A DIVORCE ATTORNEY: Sometimes there no getting around the fact that you should hire an attorney to represent you throughout your divorce.

If your relationship involves abuse, if your spouse is being vindictive, lying, hiding assets, wasting assets, or if your divorce involves complicated financial or child-related issues you should make a point of speaking with an attorney regarding representation for your dissolution.

INGREDIENTS 10 hard boiled eggs Food colorings 1 tsp vinegar for each color you are using Water 1/2 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip DIRECTIONS 1. Remove the shells from the hard boiled eggs and slice each egg in half.

Remove the yolks and place in a bowl. Set aside.

2. Get enough glasses or mugs for the number of colors you want to use. Fill the mugs or glasses 2/3 of the way full with cold water. Add 3 drops of desired food coloring along with 1 tsp vinegar to each mug or cup.

3. Place egg whites in the mugs and allow to sit in the food coloring until desired color is reached.

4. Remove whites from dye and drain on a plate lined with a couple of paper towels.

5. Take the reserved yolks and mash them with a fork, then mix in the mayonnaise (you can also add salt and other seasonings at this point).

6. Pipe or spoon the yolk mix into the colored egg whites.

T

he story of Canby is a story about the railroad. It’s quite literally true that the town would not exist without it... at least, not in the way that we know it today.

Canby’s original downtown was platted on land owned

by Philander Lee and his family, but it was agents with the Oregon and California Railroad who first approached Lee in 1870 and encouraged him to sell, with the idea of completing the ambitious line connecting east Portland to San Francisco.

Lee agreed to sell 111 acres for a grand total of $2,960 to develop a 24-block city, and sold 300 more acres to the railroad. Famously, his one condition was that the streets of the new town be wide enough for two span of oxen and a wagon to make a full turn.

a circle. The diameter of that turn was 80 feet, which became the width of the city’s original streets, and the reason to this day that downtown Canby has among the most spacious and open streetscapes of any town in the Willamette Valley.

The first rails were laid just after the city plats were filed in August 1870, and in 1873, the railroad depot was built near what is now Northwest First and Grant.

Styled No. 11, it replaced the first depot, which was knocked down in a windstorm in 1871, the same year it had been constructed.

Albert H. Lee, Philander’s eighth child, was the first railroad agent. The first steam train chugged its way through Canby in 1871. Canby’s first post office was in the drug store across from the depot, and druggist Charles “Doc” Knight, who came in 1870 and also built the first hotel, served as the town’s first postmaster.

Canby’s celebration of the nation’s independence was particularly lively in 1915, as hundreds gathered at the Canby Depot in July of that year to wave as the Liberty Bell passed through town on its way to the PanamaPacific International World’s Fair in San Francisco.

“Citizens of Canby and vicinity to the number of several hundred gathered at the depot and along the tracks Thursday noon to get a glimpse of the famous old bell as it passed through on its way from Philadelphia to the Exposition at San Francisco,” newspapers recorded. “The special train bearing the historic relic arrived shortly after one o’clock and although it did not stop it slowed down sufficiently to permit one to obtain a fairly good view of the bell.”

Unfortunately, one of the bootlegger’s accomplices arrived before Sheriff Wilson and recognized the deputy in disguise. The unknown criminal grabbed two of the suitcases and disappeared through an opening in the roof before Garrett knew what was happening. He made his getaway into the dark and was never heard from again.

In the meantime, the bootlegger, knowing the jig was up, decided he might as well tip up the jug.

“Sheriff Wilson arrived soon after and armed with a search warrant,” the Herald reported. “Here he found (CONTINUES ON NEX T PAGE)

One of the most colorful episodes in town history occurred outside the depot in January 1918, when Clackamas County Deputy Dick Garrett was sent to be on the lookout for a reported shipment of bootlegged whiskey that was being disguised as luggage on a passenger train. Undercover to hide his status as a law enforcement officer, Garrett boarded the train and soon found what he was looking for.

Here’s how the Canby Herald recorded the incident: “Sure enough, there was a trunk, and Holy Moses, there was another one, and then some suitcases,” the newspaper said. “Dick began to swell and gnash his teeth … and sailing forth he found the owner of the booze, who was about half tanked, and it was an easy matter for Dick to CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 53

The next day, Brown pleaded guilty to having 200 quarts of whiskey in his possession and was fined $400 and 200 days in jail. He was saved by his wife, who went to Oregon City and paid the fine (given the tongue lashing he no doubt received, he might have rather stayed in jail).

In 1933, the depot was the site of a protest by several hundred members of the “Hunger Army,” a group organized by the Unemployed Party, also known as the Communists, whose socialist ideas became popular with many out-of-work souls during the worst part of the Great Depression. “Armed with streaming banners approved by an organization known as the Communists, the hungry marchers arrived in Canby and took lunch on the depot grounds between the railroad track and Main Street,” a newspaper recorded. “The marchers are orderly American citizens and were treated as such.”

For many years, the workhorse on the Canby branch of the Southern Pacific railroad was a steam-powered locomotive known as the No. 5021. Built in the mid1920s, the 5021 provided passenger and freight service and ran the rails from east to west — always stopping at the Canby Depot along the way. It remained in operation until 1955.

The Canby Depot served the community well for over a century, as it grew from a small farming town into a thriving, active city of more than 10,000 souls. The

station served passengers as well as freight, and even handled telegraph service. Mail came and went by steam and later diesel train, under contract. Thousands of carloads of potatoes, grain and other agricultural products from local farms went out by rail before and after World War I, when the three large commission offices operated here.

Its stationeers included Archie Markee, who served as stationmaster for 35 years until his retirement in 1958, and Herman Bergman, longtime Southern Pacific Railroad employee who turned out the lights when the Canby Depot closed in 1975. Both were known for their many contributions to the community in which they chose to live and work.

By the late 1970s, the then-107-year-old structure had been decommissioned and was on the verge of being torn down. Fortunately, starting in 1978, a grassroots movement had started in Canby to have the depot (the oldest still standing in the entire state of Oregon) designated a historic structure and turned into a museum. The movement included members of the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations, with assistance and support from the Canby City Council and Clackamas County.

A Save The Depot Committee, headed by local historian Myra Weston, was formed to raise money to move and restore the historical building. The effort received more than $20,000 in private contributions, along with donated materials and services, and a $20,000 Community Development Block Grant. It took five years, but the group eventually raised enough to remove, renovate and relocate the aging structure three-quarters of a mile down Northwest 1st Avenue to its new home near the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, a journey that took almost an hour.

The rechristened Canby Depot Museum, home to the Canby Historical Society, was dedicated in October 1986, with Bergman serving as master of ceremonies and Markee (who, by then, was 98 years old) in attendance.

W

ith a global pandemic and economic downturn, destructive wildfires and a historic ice storm to cap it all off, the past 12 months were not what anyone expected. The Canby Center did not expect it either, but they were (more or less) ready for it. “The Canby Center was made for years like 2020,” Executive Director Ray Keen said in the local nonprofit’s recently released annual report. “Birthed by five churches amid the financial crisis of 2008, a deepening well of compassion led people in the pews to stand up and take a cup of water to their thirsty neighbors.”

The Canby Center saw demand for its weekly food program more than quadruple last year, from 392 families served in March 2020 to 1,792 only 2 months later in May. Cumulative numbers for the year show an even more astonishing picture.

The Canby Center redistributed 284,000 pounds of food in 2019, and 889,000 pounds in 2020 - a 213% increase.

“We were serving an average of 60 families a week before Covid-19,” Keen said. “After, our numbers skyrocketed to an average of 250 families a week. Despite the uncertainties all around us, we were able to keep meeting real needs in our community, sometimes at a moment’s notice. Our goal in everything was to keep volunteers and members safe while continuing to deliver the care and support needed like never before.”

Keen estimated the nearly 1 million pounds of food the Center offered to needy local families last year was valued at $1.5 million, all provided thanks to the generosity of countless food manufacturers, wholesalers and retail stores. The Center’s program included a record 11,396 weekly distributions, which helped more than 1,000 people throughout the year. “This massive undertaking was supported by local churches and other organizations who helped us secure the equipment needed to redistribute this food,” Keen said. “When God’s generosity defines a community like it does Canby, there is no disease, division, or wildfire that can hold it back.”

Though its focus was on the basic necessity of food distribution for much of the year, the Center also provided the community with additional resources to assist with other challenges being faced.

These included 942 hours of one-on-one reading with emerging learners through its Reading Mentors program, providing quality clothing to 1,798 people and making free meals available for pick-up four days a week, even during the wildfire crisis.

The challenging year also underscored the importance of community partnerships for The Canby Center. Thanks to the support of the Rotary Club of Canby and Canby School District, the Center was able to provide school supplies to 281 low-income students and 100 desks for students learning at home.

The Center handed out nearly $180,000 in federal CARES Act funding passed through by the City of Canby, which went toward rent and utility payments of local residents and families financially impacted by Covid-19. And a $10,000 grant from Clackamas County helped offset the costs of installing a walk-in refrigerator that was donated to the Center in the spring. The new cooler allowed the Center to accept donations of refrigerated food items for the first time and serve up to 200 additional families each week.

MEET THE ATHLETE

I

n the shortened high school football season that many feared would never happen in the first place, senior Cougar standout Chance Miller is determined to make it count. Through the Cougars’ first two games, the dynamic Miller was third in the state in receiving yards and fourth in touchdowns.

And he scored in other ways as well: In both contests, he was the first to put Cougar points on the board, taking a kick return 90 yards back for a score in the season opener, and a punt return almost that far just a couple of minutes into the first quarter of game 2. “Chance Miller has taken his game to an even higher level - which is scary,” Coach Jimmy Joyce said at the time. “Two weeks, two special teams touchdowns.”

While his speed and agility are obvious, his stamina and conditioning are perhaps even more impressive. Though it’s not uncommon for high school football stars to play roles on both offense and defense, Miller also plays both sides of special teams, even serving as the Cougars’ kicker.

“He never comes off the field,” Joyce said. “He is, by far, one of the most dynamic athletes in the state.”

Miller is known not only for how difficult he is to catch, but how hard he is to bring down once you do, often breaking several tackles on the way to big gains. He chalks that up to the mindset of how he approaches each play.

“I just tell myself, ‘I’m not going to go down,’” he said.

“And if I do go down, it’s going to take five or six people.

You just have to have that mindset, that if I’m going to go down, it’s going to take more than one person.”

Known for being a human highlight reel on the gridiron, it may surprise readers to learn that Miller’s first love was a very different sport. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, he grew up with a passion for bicycle motocross, better known as BMX. “My parents owned up a BMX bike shop up there in Alaska,” he recalled. “So, as a kid, I was out there at, like, 3 years old, riding the track.”

When his family moved to Albany, Oregon, he began

dabbling in more traditional sports - especially soccer.

“But when we moved to Canby, it was all football,” he said with a laugh. “And I’m pretty fast, so a couple of the [football] coaches came and talked to me. And I’ve just loved football ever since.”

Miller was obviously born with athletic talent, but he’s honed his natural gifts through years of disciplined conditioning and exercise, something he continued during the coronavirus hiatus, which lasted more than a year for traditional fall sports like football.

“Wake up in the morning, work out, go train for the military, schooling, and then practice again and homework all night,” he said, describing his routine. “Scheduling, time management, writing stuff down and just really having something to look forward to.”

Miller is obviously looking forward to showcasing his skills for the rest of the shortened football season, and also plans to participate in basketball and track and field later this year. He’s also excited about what is coming after high school, having verbally committed to join the

United States Air Force, attend the Air Force Academy and play for their Division I football team, the Falcons.

“They called and offered right after my junior year,” Miller said. “And with everything that’s been going on, it all came pretty fast. It’s just seemed like a great opportunity to go play at the Air Force and to serve.”

Miller could certainly do worse than joining the Falcons, who are known for their premiere offense, the distinctive lightning bolts on their helmets and for their players excelling in academics as well as athletics.

In his junior year, Miller not only reeled in 59 catches and piled up 1,127 receiving and rushing yards, with nine touchdowns (top 10 in the state in all three categories), he also maintained a 3.8 GPA. “The Air Force Academy offers unbelievable personnel opportunities outside of playing Division I football,” Coach Joyce said. “As I told Chance, the Pac-12 and SEC recruit the best football players in the country. The service academies recruit great football players who are also the best people in the country, and that’s Chance.” ◾
