Why don’t some of my devices run quickly even though I have a high-speed Internet connection? Internet connections offered by DirectLink can be as fast as 1,000 Mbps (1 Gigabit), but ultimately depend on the member’s equipment capabilities. For example, if one tried to load a web page on an iPhone 6 while connected to their home WiFi, and then on an iPhone 11, the newer device will likely load much faster. Despite both being connected to the same high-speed Internet network, the newer iPhone has more advanced internal processing capabilities that allow it to run more smoothly and efficiently.

Here are some other reasons why you may not experience the fastest activity on your high-speed connection: • •

•

•

The old WiFi router or equipment in your home may not support Gigabit Internet speeds, thus limiting access to higher speeds. The device(s) is too far away from the WiFi access point for a strong signal. Larger homes, older homes, and some objects – like thick mirrors and microwaves – can decrease the signal strength as well. If this is your experience, consider a commercial-grade WiFi Home Networking solution from DirectLink starting at just $6 per month. Let us take care of your network and make sure that it’s optimized to provide the strongest, most consistent signal in every room of your home. The device(s) may have slowed down with age. Most Internet-connected devices, like smartphones, laptops, and tablets, undergo regular software updates that are meant to improve functionality. However, when these updates are applied to older devices, they can sometimes slow down the device because the older technology was not necessarily designed to be able to support hefty new updates. For example, computers purchased before the Windows 7 operating system will likely not be able to support current updates and will run more slowly. The device(s) need to be rebooted. Often a simple power cycle will remedy many issues related to lag or slow activities. Turn the device(s) off, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then power it back on.

What should I do if I experience any of the above? Conduct a wired speed test via SpeedTest.net (on a computer that is plugged directly into the wall via an Ethernet connection, for example) to see exactly what speeds your network delivers. Then, check your WiFi equipment if it is not leased from DirectLink to make sure it is not too old to support high speeds. Finally, look at the devices connected to the network and verify that they have the capability to perform tasks on a high-speed connection.

AurorA Colony Pub by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

Every small town has one: the local watering hole that reflects the charm and characteristics of the community around it. Sometimes, it’s the work of savvy proprietors, who are smart enough to do a little market research and tailor their establishments to the wants and needs of their desired customer base. But in some cases, like with the Aurora Colony Pub, it’s because the place has been around for longer than most of the town, and because the workers and the regulars have known each other so long that it can be hard to tell them apart. Janae Barton, a lifelong Canby resident who now owns the pub with her husband, Corey, worked as a bartender at the Aurora Colony Pub for five years. During that time she fell in love with the work and the sense of camaraderie shared among the bar’s regular patrons. Barton can’t talk about the pub for long without mentioning the catchphrase of a different (and fictional) community bar. “It’s wonderful,” she says of owning the bar. “It’s a small town. We’ve got good people and a loyal customer base. We have many, many people we know by name. It’s just like ‘Cheers,’” she adds with a laugh. Located exactly 25 miles from both Portland and Salem (traveling along Highway 99E, anyway), the Pub was originally called “The Halfway Tavern,” for that reason. But the building predates even the highway itself.

PHOTOS BY STACI FARRELL PHOTOGRAPHY

Built in the 1930s, the original structure had to be modified to accommodate the new right-of-way for Highway 99E when it was re-routed through Aurora. That is the reason for the odd, diagonal alignment of the west-facing exterior wall nearest to the highway that you’ve probably never noticed until right now. Over the years, it’s been home to a grocery store, then a barber shop, followed by a small tavern. The original meat locker still sits just off the middle of what is now the main bar seating area; except now it cools bottles and kegs of beer instead of slabs of beef. The pub is authentic with its sloping concrete floors, tin roof and old Americana pub atmosphere. Aurora is proud of its pioneer history, and the Colony Pub is no different. Antique farming implements and other historic artifacts line the walls, along with neon beer signs that definitely didn’t come over on the Oregon Trail. The patronage is a good mix of longtime customers and first-timers, as they see a lot of the antiquing crowd on

the weekends. The place is well-known for their food and daily specials (all-you-can-eat spaghetti on Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, chicken-fried steak on Wednesdays, chef’s special on Thursdays, clam chowder on Fridays and prime rib on Saturdays).

Laurie passed away the following year, the Colony Pub hosted her celebration of life, and the place was packed with locals wanting to pay their last respects. “I never saw such a turnout,” recalls Jones. “We couldn’t fit everybody in.”

Barton’s sister, Stacey Larson, also works there and says that people come from all over for the New Englandstyle, homemade chowder (a closely guarded house recipe) and say it’s even better than Mo’s. “People rave about the food,” says Shelby Jones, another employee and Larson’s daughter. “It’s not just fried bar food, like what people might think. Everything’s made from scratch.”

Barton credits the Newcomers for the loyal customer base they built, and for a number of traditions she promises she will never change. That includes the annual Halloween bash, which includes live music and cash prizes for the best costumes. “It’s usually our biggest night,” says Larson. “People start talking about it months in advance.”

The bar boasts many patrons who have been coming there “forever,” Barton says, and can tell the property’s history better than anybody. They remember every owner and proprietor the place has had: Opal Gumaer (who still visits the premises in spirit sometimes, according to legend), Jimmy Berndt, the Crane family and the much-beloved Russ and Laurie Newcomer.

As you can probably tell, the Aurora Colony Pub is a family business in every sense of the word. “I couldn’t do it without my family,” Barton says. “The entire family helps. Even our mom comes in sometimes to bus tables and fill drinks.”

“They’re the most wonderful people in the world,” Barton says of the previous owners, who sold the Pub in 2016. “Everybody loves Russ and Laurie.” When

Moondoggies Overstock by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

C

anby’s newest store is now open at the former location of the Premier Pawn & Gun shop on Highway 99E, bringing a quality selection of overstock and liquidated items at close-out prices along with a capable presence on social media. Moondoggies Overstock & Liquidation held a short, soft opening before the holidays in December, then opened for good on Jan. 6. They offer a wide inventory of clothing, furniture, outdoor and home goods and other items, listed at well below retail prices. Their selections change frequently, which they hope encourages customers to check back frequently and see what’s new, according to Whitney Altman, one of the owners’ two daughters, who handle their social media accounts. “Being in a small town allows us the opportunity to really get to know our customers,” she said. “Our hope is that people want to come back just to say hi and see what we have this week. Nothing beats the looks on their faces when they see good, quality products at such a discounted price.” Moondoggies is — obviously — a family-owned business. Altman said the owners let her and her sister handle the socials because they “prefer the more traditional route of meeting people in person.” The business itself isn’t new for them, but having a storefront is. “We’ve been buying overstock items for about 10 years now and mainly selling online via eBay,” Altman said. “We moved to Canby last year and realized this would be the perfect town to open a storefront in. We haven’t had a store in the past, but are really enjoying it so far.” Altman said the store gets new inventory in almost weekly so regular customers will always be seeing new things. “If you don’t see what you’re looking for, let us know and we can keep an eye out for it,” she said. “We are here to help the people of Canby keep their shopping local!” Now, the burning question. Some of our, er, wiser and more experienced readers may have already figured this out, but I was clueless: Where does the name come from? “Gidget,” of course, the 1959 film that spawned the entire “beach party” movie genre and made surfing culture mainstream in the U.S. Moondoggie, played by hunky beefcake James Darren, was one of the main characters and Gidget’s love interest. “We heard the name while watching ‘Gidget’ about 25 years ago and liked it,” Altman explained. “Later down the road, when we were signing up for an account online, it just stuck with us and we’ve used it ever since!” Moondoggies is normally open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 to 5 on Saturday. If you’d like to know more or have questions, check them out on Facebook. 

AT H L E T E P R O F I L E

K’Den McMullin

by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

K’Den McMullin’s senior year at Canby High School, it’s safe to say, has not gone quite the way he had planned. It started off great. McMullin was selected by coaches and his fellow players to be one of the senior captains of the reinvigorated Canby Cougar football team. McMullin, a running back, said the community excitement surrounding the team and the morale among the players was at an all-time high under new head coach Jimmy Joyce and his staff. Then, disaster struck on homecoming night last October against visiting Lakeridge. It was a close game, and McMullin got the hand-off from quarterback Mikey Gibson on a critical fourth-down situation. It was his job to keep the drive alive, and he did. But the cost was pretty steep. “When I dove, I just felt this really sharp pain on the top of my foot,” he recalled. “I had gotten the first down, so I was feeling really good. My adrenaline was super-high. I thought I had gotten cleated or something I could just walk it off. But I couldn’t walk at all. I tried to get up and it wasn’t working.” He knew something was wrong, but he didn’t know how serious it was. He never suspected the truth: He had broken his foot. Sadly, his senior football season was over. “It was something I never imagined,” he admitted. “It

was tough on me. It hurt for a while. It was something I had never expected in a million years.” He was told his recovery and rehab would take four to six weeks. Not ideal, but OK, he thought. He would still have plenty of time to get in shape for what he was really looking forward to: Wrestling season. Then, he got more bad news. “We went in for just an ordinary check-up with a new surgeon, and he came in with news we weren’t expecting at all,” he said. “He said the bones were starting to shift in my foot because of the injury, and the only way to fix it was immediate surgery.” Expected recovery time for the surgery? Three months, which would have put him past wrestling season entirely. “We were shocked,” McMullin said. “It felt like more bad news on top of bad news. I was in a really tough place at the time.” As it turned out, and much to his delight, his recovery progressed a little faster than his doctors anticipated. “During the time that I had to be in the boot, I tried to stay pretty active,” McMullin recalled, elaborating that he did pull-ups, mobility exercises and stretches as much as he could. “I held onto that slim chance that maybe I could be back in time for districts.” Slim chance or not, that’s exactly what happened. He got clearance to get out of the walking boot in mid-January, with the Three Rivers League District championships still a few weeks away. “I started off just walking, as weird as that sounds,” McMullin said in describing how he eased back into the wrestling season.”I would walk really slowly and carefully, just trying to get the muscles and the bones back working

in the proper ways. I had to take it really slow.” When he did suit up for his first wrestling tournament on Jan. 23, his uniform included more than the usual singlet. His injured foot was wrapped and he wore three pairs of socks as extra cushion. “It was definitely not the most comfortable or ideal situation, but it seemed to work OK,” he said. “But I was pretty nervous, pretty scared about my foot. I didn’t think I was going to be able to wrestle the way I wanted to wrestle.” But mentality matters in sports, and especially in one-onone sports like wrestling, and McMullin was determined to push through the pain and give his senior wrestling

season all that he could. He won that first match back at Canby High School, and by the time districts rolled around, he was ranked second in his weight class. He battled through the lower rounds and made it to the finals against Cole Brink, a junior from — ironically — Lakeridge, and the No. 1 seed, with the district title on the line. “My big goal, from the year prior was to be a district champion,” McMullin said. “Even though I had a mishap — the injury — the goals remained the same. I was just glad I was there and able to wrestle.” Brink is a talented grappler, with a very strong upper body. It wasn’t by accident that he was ranked No. 1 in the 138-pound weight class going into districts. But McMullin had faced him twice before — and beaten him once — so he had some confidence going into the match. McMullin trailed Brink 4-0 late into the second period before he was able to turn a cradle into a pin with just a few seconds remaining. Once thought to have lost his wrestling season before it even began, K’Den McMullin was named Three Rivers League champion. “It was a surreal moment.,” McMullin said. “I honestly wasn’t expecting it.” McMullin went on to wrestle in the state championships at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. He planned to spend the spring season on the freestyle team for the West Linn Mat Club. After graduation, he hopes to attend Pacific University in Forest Grove and wrestle for the Boxers. 

Book Reviews BLINDSIGHT

DRAGON HOOPS

by Peter Watts

by Gene Luen Yang

Fans of ‘first contact’ books will love Blindsight by Peter Watts. I have read several books lately that spend too much time leading up to the first contact story arc but not this one. It dives in pretty quickly.

Gene Luen Yang, author of American Born Chinese, brings us an exciting new Graphic novel. Dragon Hoops follows the postseason hopes of the basketball team at the Oakland high school where Yang taught for 17 years. Gene loves comic book stories, full of action and the hero always wins. He doesn’t understand sports but at the high school where he now teaches, it’s all anyone can talk about. As Gene gets to know the young athletes of the school’s basketball team he realizes that their story is just as thrilling as anything he’s seen on a comic book page.

This story has biological and psychological themes that can really mess with your mind. I loved it! This book has human sociological twists, giving the characters intense internal struggle. What is an alien? How do we know if they mean us harm? Are members of the crew any more alien than the new visitor to the solar system? Read Blindsight and seek the answers!

OUR TEEN BOOK REVIEWER LUCAS DESHAZER SAYS:

“If you like graphic novels and sports you are in luck!”

DARE TO CARE: PET DRAGON by Mark Robertson and Sally Symes Our children’s story time recently read this book and it has quickly become one of our favorites! Fun and engaging artwork alongside a fun and silly guide on the proper way to care for your new pet Dragon.

HIS TORY

Canby Parks by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

This month’s article is about the history of Canby’s parks. They play a much more important role than you may realize. They are the places children play, yes, but one day those children grow up, and the lives they lead and the futures they build are shaped in no small part by the dreams that first began to take shape on the playgrounds of their youth. Wait is the city’s oldest park. Though it was not officially deeded to Canby until 1967, its history goes back much farther than that. The property that would one day become Wait Park was part of the original 1870 plat for the city of Canby, filed 150 years ago. At some point, the land became part of the 596 acres of prime farmland acquired by one of the most colorful and unique figures in the city’s early history — teacher, Oregon Trail pioneer, gold prospector, newspaper editor, attorney, politician, farmer, lawyer and State Supreme Court Justice Aaron Emmons Wait. He ultimately retired there to work his land until his eventual death on Dec. 12, 1898 at the age of 85. The land passed to his only surviving son, Charles Nicholas, more commonly known as C.N. Wait, and though Wait Park is named after the Judge, it’s really his son to whom we owe our thanks that the park ever became what it is today.

year. But, just before his death, he set into motion the first steps in securing the city’s first park. Wait Park was at that time occupied by several strange structures, including the “Band Hall.” Built in 1912, the Band Hall was located at the corner of what is now Wait Park. It was owned by the Canby School District and used for graduation, basketball games and gym classes, while the Canby American Legion Post 122 used the back half of the building. On June 5, 1939, C.N. Wait sent a quit claim deed to the city of Canby for seven lots in downtown Canby, with an option to purchase the remaining three lots in the block from George Cummings for a cool hundred bucks apiece. The deed was not without strings attached, however. To take title to the property, the city had to agree to pay back taxes on the Wait land, to the tune of $556. By the 1940s and ’50s, the property featured a roller skating rink and baseball diamond (which had lights and seats installed in 1953 just in time for the summer baseball and softball seasons). Wise car owners soon learned not to park around the perimeter when a game was in progress — or at least when a long-ball threat was at bat.

C.N. Wait was one of the city’s first mayors after Canby was incorporated in 1893, serving from 1900 to 1902. He was also the longtime city attorney and, of course, a judge. C.N. Wait resigned from his work with the city after a long career on July 7, 1938. He died the following PHOTO COURTESY OF CANBY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The park also boasted a Quonset hut, a former Army structure that was surplused after the Second War ended in 1945. It was used as a youth center, then later by Boy Scout Troop No. 258. With all this activity, it’s remarkable that the block did not officially become a city park until the late 1960s, and wasn’t formally dedicated or named until 1972.

The city had razed many of the old buildings to clear way for the park, and had acquired a few more lots to fill things out, including gifts from William and Eva Herman and the estate of Daisy Van de Moortele. It happened on a clear, beautiful July day, when over 150 people turned out to hear then-City Attorney Wade P. Bettis dedicate Wait Park “to all the people of Canby and those of the future — for your enjoyment.”

made the park usable again. A Lake Oswego unit of the Oregon Army National Guard helped scouts build the Boy Scout A-frame in 1972, which Troop 258 continues to use and maintain. Community Park also boasts picnic facilities, barbecue pits, playground equipment and a public fishing pond known to almost everybody as “the Canby pond.”

Some of those in attendance were from Canby’s earliest families — the Lees, Waits and Knights among them. The plat was unveiled by Portland resident Aaron E. Wait, son of C.N. and grandson of the Judge. Bettis introduced him to the crowd as the “son of the donors of the land on which you now stand.”

In August 1974, the City Council set aside funds for purchase of lands in the northeast sector of town for a future park site. Four years later, the city purchased the land for Maple Street park from Myrtle Marshall and Ada Erland, after Mayor Paul N. Roth broke the council’s tie vote to allow its acquisition. (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)

The iconic gazebo was added in 1984, a gift from the Canby Arts Association. Its use for the Slice of Summer concert series, and many other musical events throughout the year, recalls the earlier days of band concerts in the city’s first park. So what about Canby’s other parks? In 1956, the city acquired 8.5 acres along the Molalla River, south of Highway 99E, from Clackamas county. It would become what we now know as Canby Community Park, also known as River Park. It is on the L.D. Cross donation land claim, later owned by 1863 pioneer Joseph Knight. In May 1966, the city expanded the park by purchasing 6.34 acres from Ross Mitchell, after adding some land from the John I. Gale farm in 1959. After the destructive Columbus Day Storm of 1962, the Canby Jaycees cleared brush, downed trees, and CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 31

HISTORY OF CANBY PARKS, continued A Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant was obtained by Canby’s first city administrator, Harry A Wyman, to aid in development. Work was completed in May 1982 after completion of the baseball/softball complex, which was named Wyman Field. Maple Street Park is also home to tennis courts, covered picnic table area, playgrounds and — coming soon — the city’s first splash pad. Canby’s smallest park is one you might not have even known is a park. It’s known as Triangle Park, and sits at the intersection of N. Holly Street and Knights Bridge Road. It has no playgrounds, no ball fields, no benches or picnic areas, not even a drinking fountain. One thing it does have, though, is a very large and very strange rock.

Thompson originally found the “desert stone” in Mitchell, and he dedicated it to his mother, Laura, a civic leader who had been instrumental in the land becoming a community park in the first place. Laura Thompson, who was also an early member of the Canby School Board, was a longtime leader of the Canby Camp Fire Girls, a youth development organization similar to the Boy Scouts, emphasizing camping and other outdoors activities.

Thompson and the Camp Fire Girls had originally cleared the brush from the tiny Triangle Park, which had been a gift to the organization from C.N. Wait’s wife, Wilhelmina. The Camp Fire Girls built a fire pit and used the property for “council fires” and other gatherings starting in the 1930s and continuing for several decades. Triangle Park became city property PHOTO COURTESY OF CANBY HISTORICAL SOCIETY in the 1960s.

Commonly known as the “Hollow Rock,” the boulder comes from Mitchell, a tiny town nestled amongst the Painted Hills of central Oregon. It was brought to Canby and placed at Triangle park in 1970 by Neal Thompson.

You Are Not Too Old And It Is Not Too Late For Fitness! Dispelling myths regarding aging and fitness

At my age muscle loss is inevitable.

You’ve heard that muscle loss (sarcopenia) can occur at 3-5% per decade after age 30. That sounds pretty daunting, but the key word here in that statistic is can. Yes, muscle loss can occur, but it doesn’t have to! You can fight the effects of aging with exercise. Strength training can stop and even reverse muscle loss at any age.

I’m too old to do what I used to do, so what’s the point?

Perhaps you feel that because you can no longer do something you used to enjoy in the past, that you are too old for exercise or physical activity. Not true! While your physical activities may need to change due to injury, lack of conditioning, or some other reason – your body was made for movement. At any age and in any condition you can still move. Strategic movement will restore your body’s ability to function and you’ll find yourself moving better the more you move consistently and intentionally.

But, everything hurts at my age!

It is really easy to blame pain on your age. In fact, society actually encourages this myth. However, a large majority

of your aches and pains aren’t age related, they are due to lack of movement. It is easier to blame your age then to make changes in your physical activity, but even little changes will start reducing some of those pains and allow your body to start moving better. Of course, you can’t pick up where you left off 30 years ago. You’ll need to make some changes and ease back into fitness. A properly trained fitness professional can help you take steps to safely getting your body moving again.

A Personal Trainer can’t help me. They don’t understand people my age.

A true professional can work with a variety of ages and ability levels. Step one is taking some time to talk to a certified trainer. You might be surprised at what a fitness professional can do to keep you safe while helping you improve your health and fitness for life.

Annette’s current client base at The Fitness Studio consists of people from age 12 – 88. She can help you move forward to gaining strength, movement, flexibility, balance, and muscle mass at any age and at any level. Annette’s focus is on keeping people moving for life.

MEET THE DOC TOR

David Dewar by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

he fact that David Dewar became a chiropractor specializing in sports medicine would probably not surprise anyone who knew him as a student at Canby High School. He was always an athlete, running cross-country under longtime Canby High teacher and coach Tom Millbrooke. He also ran track in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meter events. “I always enjoyed cross-country more,” says Dewar. “Because you just have to get nervous for one race, instead of three. Plus, in cross-country, you get to run a course and not just run in circles.” He qualified for the state championships his junior and senior year in track and earned a scholarship to run at George Fox University, then known as George Fox College. It was with the Bruins that he first encountered and came to appreciate the value of chiropractic care through interactions with the team doctor, Dean Clark, D.C. He learned the success of manual medicine firsthand. “I had always run injury free,” Dewar says. “But in college, we started stepping up so many more miles, and I developed a stress fracture and shin splints. That was my first experience with the chiropractic model in sports.” He was so intrigued by the practice, he decided to pursue it as a potential career after initially entertaining thoughts of being an athletic trainer. “It was great because he could work with his hands,” Dewar says of Dr. Clark. “He didn’t just write a prescription to go down to the local pharmacy to get some painkiller.” His philosophy of continuing to look to and learn from other medical experts has continued, even as he became a licensed chiropractor. “I always look to other specialists as I develop my own treatment philosophy,” he says. “As well as learning from others, I love to share my own knowledge and experience.” Dewar says his motivation is to help people get back to their favorite activities, whether professional, recreational, or on the job, and help them reach their full potential. As a chiropractor, he spends a lot of time doing manual adjustments, of course. He works not only with the spine, but with feet, ankles, shoulders, elbows and hands as well. “My primary concern is function and how muscles work,” he says. “Muscles and bones work together, and function is really important. Function can determine the type of injury you get. It’s fun because it’s like a puzzle I get to figure out.” He deals with a lot of typical chiropractic work, such as low back pain and headaches, but likes to focus on functional issues like imbalances and specializes in enhanced muscle integrative

technique, which works on muscles that have been shut down because of injury. He says one of his biggest client bases is sprained ankles, something almost everyone experiences at some point in their life. When you sprain an ankle your brain sends signals to avoid putting weight on the injured ankle, and tries to avoid your body being put in a painful, unstable position. Dewar says that can lead to overcompensation on the part of the uninjured ankle and can even lead to the brain “shutting down” particular muscles so they don’t work well anymore. “The holy grail of any therapy, whether it’s physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, etc., is to get the muscles to fire correctly and to restore balance so you can begin that restoration process,” Dewar says. “It’s almost like hitting the reset button on your computer.” His enthusiasm and experience in sports medicine and his care for high-performance athletes has led to his being involved in many events, including the International World Games, the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships and the IAAF World Indoor Championships, the USA Track and Field Indoor and Outdoor Nationals, as well as the 2016 USA Olympic Trials for Track and Field at Hayward Field in Eugene. Locally, he has lent his skills to the Canby Rodeo, the Canby Dahlia Run, the Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament, providing sideline attention at Canby Cougar football games, and he continues to work closely with Molalla High School and George Fox University athletic training. Dewar Chiropractic is located at 332 NW 1st Avenue in downtown Canby, in the renovated former location of Puddin’ River Chocolates. “To clean the place up, we had to eat a lot of chocolate when we moved in,” Dewar jokes. “The family helped with that.” Dewar Chiropractic offers a full range of services in addition to chiropractic care, including acupuncture and massage therapy. The Reality of the Current Real Estate Market

irst, take a deep breath…..remember, COVID-19 is nothing we can personally control! However, there are still many things we can take charge of right now to help alleviate the stress and fear some might be feeling. This is obviously a situation many of us have never experienced or lived through but there is some insight in looking at history! The long term impact of this pandemic is currently not yet known but here are some suggestions that might help you come out on the other side in a better position with regard to the housing market! Remember we don’t know how long this virus will last or the direct impact to our individual, unique world as we know it which means that we don’t know how long we will need to adapt to the current turmoil until we can get back to what will likely be a ‘new” normal. Our original format for this article changed as our local and world markets morphed into something alien in front of our eyes and overnight! People shuttering their stores, being laid off, schools being delayed for undefined periods of time and the list goes on! So, our thoughts turned to “how can we help” our customers and the industry in which we, ourselves, make a living! The three of us agreed that the key was “education”! We want to share with you some of what we learned and we feel will be helpful as you navigate the months ahead! Most of us suddenly have more time on our hands than we know what to do with! Take this opportunity to address issues you have been putting off on your house. If finances allow, hire out projects that you have been putting off (lots of contractors or sub-contractors that were “too” busy are now available to pick up these smaller side jobs) or if you are a DIY person, get them done. There are a large number of projects that require little to no money but do require “elbow grease”. Put on the grubby clothes and grab your ladder and go clean your windows, clean your gutters, treat your roof for moss, buy a couple gallons of paint and paint a room that has been in need or the weather side of your exterior siding! This helps get those “to do” items off your list and keeps your house in better condition! Many of these things can

36 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

be a “family affair” and teaching moments followed by a nice home cooked meal for dinner! Purge your home! People are still buying items off swap pages, Facebook postings and places like Offer Up. Take this time to go through the myriad of “things” you have collected in your home and either sell or take to a donation site. Things that are broken…start a dump run (can be as little at $25/ load). Even if you aren’t thinking of selling your home in the recovery, cleaning, purging and organizing your belongings can give a sense of control and relief with pride of accomplishment at the outcome! Re-evaluate your budget and household expenses. We all know most of us will be feeling some type of financial impact from this current crisis. It is a good time to sit down with the household occupants and go over the bills and determine what we can live without! Being proactive from a financial standpoint will help ease stress should this pandemic cause a more prolonger recovery in jobs and the overall economy! First and foremost, reach out to any lender to which you owe money and find out what your “options” are! Are they willing to defer payments on your mortgage, credit cards and/or car payment? It doesn’t hurt to ask and you may find that there are options! This takes time to make all the calls and get the answers….don’t give

up, be persistent and have a pen and paper handy so you can take notes on each lender you call! We would highly suggest the priority, if you own your home, is keeping your mortgage paid! FHA, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are offering some options and they can be found simply by Googling the key words above. Private lenders are in a different boat and without some backing from our Government, it will be more difficult for them to accommodate lack of mortgage payments from the general home owner public! However, it is worth the phone call to find out! Please keep in mind, before you make a decision on anything that is offered to you, UNDERSTAND fully what the options are! A 12 month forebearance is very different from 90 days of deferred payments! Once you get some answers, re-create a budget! This will help you see the cash flow required to continue to run your household! Finally, if you have been laid off or had to “close” your store as a non-essential business, if you don’t qualify for unemployment, you may need to go out and find a “temporary” job! Remember this is exactly that “temporary” so you don’t have to love it, just love it enough to keep bills paid and food on the table until the economy gets turned around! If you are a small business owner that did have to “close” shop, check out the SBA options as there are grants that were just instituted….again this will take time and perseverance to get answers but it will be worth the work you put into it if it allows you to sustain your business through the downturn! If you are thinking of selling at the outcome of this chaos, there are areas that continue to stay somewhat protected from any type of market downturn! If we look to history to help give us any clues, the Great Depression, according to Tucker Merrihew with TTM Development Company, showed a 7-11% real estate market reduction in the year following the Great Depression. He indicated you could likely expect 10% drop in home values coming out of this with some areas protected more than others and

ROTARIANS ARE PEOPLE OF ACTION Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today's most pressing challenges. Canby Rotarians are pleased with the community response to its first Daddy-Daughter Dance. Many community partners stepped-up to donate services, food, decorations, and promotion of the event. Financial sponsors including Diamond Sponsor Advantage Mortgage (Derek Hill), Gold Sponsor Wilson Construction, Silver Sponsor Columbia Bank, Bronze Sponsor Puddin' River Chocolates (Teresa Sasse), and Canby Rotary Foundation committed to support the Daddy-Daughter Dance early and eagerly. Unfortunately, the event had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 gathering restrictions. We hope to reschedule "A Magical Evening" later in 2020. Community service is central to the Rotary motto "Service Above Self" which means unselfish volunteer service.

UPCOMING PROJECTS: MAY 9: Fighting Hunger Rotarians sort and pack food for the Postal Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive at The Canby Center.

MAY 29: Eradicating Disease Golf tournament to eradicate polio by educating people and raising funds for vaccines.

CANBY ROTARY TAKES ACTION Canby Rotarians believe in working together with other community organizations to serve families in our area. Backpack Buddies is a volunteer-run program that provides nutritious weekend food packages for students in need. Students are usually receiving free or reduced-price school lunches during each week. The Canby Center and Canby School District work hand-in-hand to ensure that students have food for the weekends and are ready to learn Monday morning. Canby Rotary and the Rotary sponsored Canby High School Interact Club are partners of The Canby Center to pack the food for students in special bags that are delivered to local schools on four Fridays in February and March. Canby Rotarians raise funds to purchase food that is easily prepared by elementary, middle school, and high school students. Food choices include fresh fruits, oatmeal, milk, soup, granola bars, and other nutritious food items. About 200 students receive a bag of food at no cost to them or their family for each of the weeks that school is in session during the year. The cost of providing the food packages is about $4 per student each weekend. In 2019, The Canby Center and its community partners prepared more than 8500 food packs or bags during the school year at a cost of about $25,500. This effort would not be possible for the many churches, businesses, and community organizations who are partners. The Rotary Club of Canby has made a commitment to developing and supporting programs that deliver results over the past 40 years. Rotarians are proud of working together in our community and around the world.

ROTARY READING ROTARIANS March is Rotary Literacy Month, and the members of the Rotary Club of Canby spend time in Canby School District classrooms reading to students and encouraging them to develop a love of reading that will last for their lifetime. Canby Rotary purchased a new book for each of the more than 500 student in Kindergarten through third grade in 91 School and Carus Elementary School. Working with the District librarian and teachers in each school, a day was selected for Rotarians to bring this literacy program to the students in their classroom. After reading to students in each classroom, the students pick a book from a diverse selection of titles to take with them as their own. Interest in and skill at reading is a basic need for the future success of every child in our community. Canby Rotarians support the Reading Mentors program in the Canby School District by donating a selection of new books to The Canby Center for use by volunteers who read with a student one hour each week to inspire learning and improve their reading skill. The volunteers, including Rotarians, who are Reading Mentors, model a love of reading with the hope that this will support student's academic success.

APRIL-MAY 2020

Dear Canby Community, We appreciate the opportunity to speak to the Canby community we are afforded by Canby Advantage Magazine. Considering recent events, we wanted to write to simply remind the community what the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce does. We support local business. That’s it. We support local business no matter the conditions we find ourselves in, and we will continue to do so through the immediate crisis and the extended period of rebuilding to follow. Now is a time to be agile, nimble, responsive. That’s true of our local businesses and that is true of us, the customer, as well. It is important moving forward that we respond to change, that we change ourselves as consumers in order to ensure the economic stability of our community. Do business in a new way. Try a new way of engaging with a local company. Support the 260+ businesses of the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce. They represent over 7,000 jobs in our community. Businesses will be changing the way they interact with their customers, and we must be prepared to support them through this transitional period. The Canby Area Chamber is hopeful that through our support, and the support of the broader community, that we can help retain our vibrant local economy and all the people who make it happen. Be well. Be strong. Be loyal. And…Keep it Canby. Sincerely, Kyle Lang Executive Director Canby Area Chamber of Commerce www.CanbyAreaChamber.com 503-266-4600

WHY CHOOSE SUPERTREES® BOTANICALS

Manufactured in Canby, Oregon. Available For Sale At Canby Clinic. HEMP OIL

• At Canby Clinic, we typically recommend that patients use the CBD oil orally at bedtime to help with sleep, or as needed for mood support. • It is in a lipid base of MCT oil for fast absorption. • Because it is a full spectrum oil, you can rest assured it is giving you the complete benefit of the whole plant.

• A local company based out of Canby, Oregon. • Their hemp is grown without the use of pesticides. • Supercritical CO2 is the extraction method used to extract the oil. • They use full spectrum oil so you get the benefits of the whole plant. • The extraction, bottling, and packaging is done in their licensed food processing facility. • Their products are tested by third party labs to verify CBD potency is accurate.

HEMP BALM • We typically recommend that patients use the balm topically as needed to help in reducing the stiffness and pain in joints and sore muscles. • We also recommend using hemp balm for dry and chapped hands. • The other ingredients in the SuperTrees® Hemp Balm have been researched and shown to reduce inflammation of various skin conditions as well.
