Pioneer Chapel Performing Arts: World Class Events & Entertainment!

hen you become 135 years old some people think of retiring. If you are the Pioneer Chapel built in 1884, and her owner Marilyn Nash, you just paint, renovate and continue to invite people in to experience the grandeur of this historic place that is becoming the heartbeat of Canby Oregon.

Starlight, John Nilsen, Dean Mueller, Juli Amici, Julianne Johnson, Aaron Meyers and Tom Grant to name a few who will continue to play at this historic Chapel. And beginning in June the Pioneer Chapel will add outdoor concerts under their new and elegant event tent that will host artists like Norman Sylvester.

When Marilyn Nash, owner and now operator again, took back control of the Canby Pioneer Chapel in 2019 her vision was to create something that you could not experience anywhere else in the Northwest. People who have been introduced, or reintroduced, to this charming venue comment on its “breathtaking ambience” that is now host to world class entertainment, elegant teas and romantic weddings.

“We are so excited that Norman is playing on August 17th which we are calling ‘Jazz Fest’ with the hope that it will become a new tradition for our expanding concerts and events” as Marilyn explains her vision for the future. The expansive tent has already hosted a very successful Royal Tea on Mother’s Day while both the Canby and Wilsonville Chambers of Commerce helped kick off the elegant event tent adorned with five breathtaking chandeliers in recent ribbon cutting ceremonies.

“Michael Allen Harrison did such a wonderful job bringing in the best in entertainment and host to several weddings during his 24-month tenure, however when his performing schedule began taking him across the country and some international travel it was challenging his time commitment” said Marilyn who has already made impact since taking over again in January 2019. Each month you can now find Michael Allen Harrison playing his Wednesday Night Chill Series or enjoy monthly such performers as Tony

“We are also planning on the next generation of performers tapping into local talent such as ‘Those Willows’ with plans on making this a regular part of our line up in the near future”. Along with an infusion of new entertainment and other planned events such as the summer ending Floral Festival on August 31st, Marilyn has also brought on a Digital Marketer, Melissa Tarter, who has helped create the social media excitement fitting the energy that has become the Pioneer Chapel Performing Arts center. Another recent addition to the PCPA team is Marketing Consultant Mary Closson, Closson Communications, who is doing much needed network exposure and customer insight analysis. The Pioneer Chapel might be turning 135 this year, but the future has never looked brighter as the jewel of Canby Oregon continues to shine!

The trendy new activated charcoal craze may not be as effective as you think. No activated charcoal products have earned the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance. The Journal of the American Dental Association published a literature review that found no sufficient evidence to support the efficacy claims of charcoal products. ur town wasn’t always called Canby. In fact, it was originally known as Baker Prairie, named after Jim Baker, a colorful frontiersman known for his size and integrity (his nicknames included “Big Jim” and “Honest Jim”), as well as his love for the institution of marriage (it’s rumored he may have taken as many as 20 wives in his, no doubt, stress-free life). Through circumstances no one is really quite sure about anymore, the name Baker Prairie got dropped somehow, and “Canby” wound up on the paperwork that was filed with the town’s first plat in 1870. It was a nod to General Edward Canby, a much-revered Civil War hero who was stationed in Oregon and wellknown at the time, but who never actually set foot in the town that bears his name. Whatever the name, though, as long as there have

been people here, there have been schools. The first pioneer children in the Canby area began their education in one of two log schoolhouses. The locations are no longer certain (both burned over 150 years ago). But one is believed to have been located east of Canby, while the other was somewhere along the banks of the Molalla River. The town’s first frame schoolhouse was built in 1875 by William Knight, an influential Canby pioneer who had moved to the area with his father and brothers 12 years earlier as part of the Aurora Colony migration led by Dr. William Keil. William Knight was an early railroad agent, and also the owner/proprietor of Knight Mercantile, a downtown general store that served as the first meeting place of the Canby City Council after the town was incorporated in 1893.

Known as the “white school,” the little one-room schoolhouse was situated on land bequeathed by the Wait family in what is now a residential neighborhood on North Holly Street. Canby School District No. 86 was established on July 9, 1887, with the simple goal of giving every child the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential — a mission that continues to this day. The curriculum was centered on the three R’s: reading, writing and ’rithmatic. Say what you will about the current state of public transportation, but the school buses were even less reliable back then. In fact, they didn’t even exist. Instead, children walked to school (“uphill both ways,” probably), or were driven there by horse and buggy. Attendance was not mandatory, and would often plummet during planting and harvesting time, as children stayed home to help their families. This first “in-town” public school was a four-room, two-story building on the corner of North Grant and Fourth Avenue, on land originally owned by the Oregon & California Railroad Company but later

donated to the town. There’s still an elementary school there, named —appropriately enough — after William Knight. It employed three teachers, whose combined salaries totaled $125 a month, and served children in first through eighth grades. Evidently, early childhood education was somewhat lacking in those days. But the area was growing rapidly. A 1909 survey showed 206 school-age pupils in the district, and a merger with the Riverside and Mundorf school districts later that year certainly didn’t help matters. In 1911, Canby had its first high school class, and a real space problem on their hands. The old schoolhouse was sold, to a Joseph H. Sutherland for the grand sum of 405 bucks, and relocated to 390 NW Second Ave., where it served as a hotel for the next 50 years, ending its life as a nursing home in 1974. In its place was erected a brand-new, concrete institution, whose strikingly Gothic bell tower would earn it the nickname of the “Canby Castle.” The moniker stuck, even after the bell tower was taken down a few years later. “Large and roomy” was how the Canby Herald described the new building, which they claimed was twice as big as it appeared on the outside. They did, however, note its “peculiar construction.” It was the work of the Brass Construction Co. and cost the district $16,457. For that sum, the Castle came complete with nine classrooms, two recreation rooms, a large fuel room, a 300-seat auditorium and offices for the principal and an assistant. Despite the Herald’s impressive descriptions, it turned out that the Castle was pretty much exactly as big as it looked on the outside. Intended to serve grades 1 through 12, it was busting at the seams seven years after it opened, and talk was growing of a separate, “union” high school that would also serve Macksburg, Yost Corner, Marks Prairie, Union Hill, Meridian, Barlow, Lone Elder, Mundorf, Paradise Corner, New Era and others — 16 districts in all.

The first graduating class in 1927 had 29 students. Meanwhile, a 29-acre site in southwest Canby, donated by New Era farmer George H. Brown, was approved by voters in one of the most lopsided results in local elections history, with 450 ballots cast in favor and only 14 on the other side. Rivaling it, though, would be another one-sided result that same year, in which Aurora voters were asked if they should join the crowd in becoming part of the Canby Union High School District. “NO,” they overwhelmingly said, with 86 voting against, and only four in favor. According to a newspaper story from the time that I 100 percent believe, someone asked, “How did there come to be four votes in favor of the proposition? There were only three petitioners.” “That’s easy,” another replied. “One of the petitioners must have been a married man.” A 1940s boom in population led to the building of Knight Elementary in 1948, and Howard Eccles Elementary (named after the long-serving principal whose career spanned five decades) in 1956. Central Point School District merged with Canby in 1948, followed by Barlow in 1964. A middle school, later named Ackerman Junior High after longtime Grade School Superintendent Paul Ackerman, came on-line in 1969. Today, it’s known as the Ackerman Center and is no longer used as a middle school. The old Canby Castle, by then used for elementary school administration offices, special education classes and record storage, was destroyed by a devastating, three-alarm fire in 1974 — one that Superintendent Ackerman had attempted to fight with a handheld extinguisher before giving up and calling the fire department. Philander Lee Elementary School (three guesses who that’s named after) came along in 1975. Trost Elementary School, today the home of the district’s dual language immersion magnet program, opened for the 1993 school year. It was named after Cecile Trost, an education icon who had served Canby

schools for over 40 years. In 1994, a final unification was voted in by area residents, combining the Canby Elementary, Canby Union High, Carus and Ninety-One school districts. In naming the newly formed district, school board members gave careful consideration to a number of candidates, including South Clackamas, Barlow Trail, Baker Prairie, End of the Trail, Oregon Trail, 84 Square Mile, Red Hot Chili, CCube91 and the Tadbetter School District. The name they ultimately selected was the most obvious: Canby School District. In 2005, the district completed its growth, for now, with the opening of its newest school, Baker Prairie Middle. Long gone were the days that a new school could be had for 16 grand. CSD’s state-of-the-art middle school cost $29 million. Canby Rotary Literacy Program

Rotarian Frank Cutsforth

The Canby Rotary Club "Reading Rotarians" literacy program is a meaningful way to support youth in Kindergarten through third grade in the Canby School District. The more than 500 students in these classes at Lee and Trost Elementary Schools heard a book read aloud to them with time to interact with the Rotarians who spent a morning with the students. After the books were read, each student picked a new book to take home with them. The books were all donated by the Rotary Club and Canby and Canby Rotary Foundation to encourage a love of reading by the students.

Canby Rotarian Frank Cutsforth is a respected business owner who is well-known in the Canby area for his successful leadership of Cutsforth Thriftway and Cutsforth Properties. Family-owned Cutsforth Thriftway will celebrate 91 years in business in June 2019. Frank has been in the grocery business since he was a boy as family participation was, and still is, at the heart of this beloved store.

The Canby School District libraries received a $1500 donation from Canby Rotary Club and Foundation to purchase new library books for the 2019-2020 school year. The books will be labeled with a bookplate signed by club members and speakers at club meetings. The Reading Mentors program coordinated by The Canby Center for the Canby School District received a donation of more than 100 new books to use in the one-on-one program to encourage youth to read well to ensure they are literate and able to progress in skill. Literacy is an important like skill needed for each person to be self-sufficient and to developed into an informed and engaged citizen.

Frank is an inspirational community leader whose example of genuine caring has resulted in a better life for youth and families in Canby. He was President of the Rotary Club of Canby in 1994-1995. He is a current Board member of the Canby Rotary Foundation, organizer of the Canby Cruise-In each year in August, leads the "Rotary Bucks" campaign for people who need emergency help with food, is serving or has served on the Canby School Board, The Canby Education Foundation Board, The Canby Center Board, and the Suicide Prevention Task Force. Frank can be seen gathering food and toys for needy families at Christmas, helping with youth sports events, planting trees, or leading a parade of children to the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. He always seems to be having fun while making a difference. Frank's distinguished record of professional and community service earned him the Rotarian of the Year award in 2018.
