Letter From The Publisher
W
elcome to our October 2021 issue of the Canby Community Advantage Magazine. There are many things going on around town this month. We expanded our magazine to 96 pages in order to fit everything in.
Here is a quick glimpse of what we have inside this issue:
Halloween, Halloween, Halloween. This issue is packed full of places to go, things to do, and ways to make sure your October is Scary Fun for the whole family. Once again we feature the Scare Fair going on at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, every weekend in October. We also interviewed the folks down in Hubbard at Milburn’s Haunted Manor. For those who love Halloween movies, be sure to check out our Freaky Flicks page for some great suggestions for movies with a scary twist. Our October recipe, Scarecrow Cookies, is fun for the whole family to enjoy making together. And we also have pumpkin carving tips too. In addition to our great regular features, we are pleased to introduce our newest additions to the publication. They include business spotlights on Retro Revival, King’s Farm To Table, and Cornerstone Wealth Management. We also have a new feature called “Meat The Veteran,’’ sponsored by Ebner’s Custom Meat, that will feature the story of a local area veteran. We are also excited to welcome Canby’s Snap Fitness, OVS, and Dragonfly Detailing to the magazine. As always, packed throughout this publication are great local deals and specials from some of Canby’s finest restaurants, retail shops, home improvement specialists, and more. Our next issue will be out at the end of November, just in time for the holiday season. Until then, we hope everyone has a safe and happy October and Halloween. Sincerely,

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Driven By Your Goals C
SNAP FITNESS
By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer ody Artino, new owner of Snap Fitness in Canby, is passionate about one thing: helping you reach your personal fitness and health goals. “That’s what originally got me into this business and what really drives me every day,” Cody explains. “Everyone’s goal is different. It could be to lose weight or to get stronger. I’ve had people come to me saying, ‘I want to lose 30 pounds,’ or ‘I want to be able to walk my daughter down the aisle.’ Whatever the case, every person who comes into the gym is there for some reason. And as a personal trainer, my goal is to help you better yourself.” Cody shares about one client, a cancer survivor, whose mobility was so limited when he first joined the gym that he couldn’t even complete the initial tour of the facility. “He could only walk about 25 feet at a time,” Cody recalls. Cody and Snap Fitness developed a plan with a few basic exercises that he could do at the gym and at home. “It’s incredible to see him now,” he says with a laugh. “He does laps through the gym and says he has more mobility than he’s had in years. We’ve been able to literally change his life for the better, and that’s the kind of stuff that really motivates you.” Cody practically grew up in the gym, spending time with his bodybuilder father. His first job was at Gold’s Gym and he became a certified personal trainer before he enlisted in the United States Navy and life took him elsewhere.
He had been a member of Snap Fitness for eight years when the opportunity to purchase the location arose. “To me, it really felt like the culmination of a life of fitness and something I really enjoy,” he says. “I took a leap of faith, and we’ve just been received so awesomely by Canby and our members. It feels so great when you have the support of the community behind you.” Cody’s philosophy of personal training is that the gym is the icing on the cake — not the starting point. “Really, the gym should be step 3 or 4,” he explains. “What a good personal trainer should do — and what we do — is sit down with you and work on your diet, your habits, your activity level and the things you do outside the gym. If you ignore that part of it, then any gains you do see from the gym are just going to be temporary.” That said, Snap Fitness is a full-service gym that offers access to a complete range of fitness machines, equipment and free weights. Uniquely, it’s open to members 24 hours a day, seven days a week — as are all 2,200plus Snap Fitness locations across the country. “That’s actually a really important and significant portion of our membership in Canby,” Cody says. “As Canby and the surrounding communities are growing and changing constantly, we have some of these large companies that operate 24/7 and have night and swing shifts. So we do see lots of members coming in after 10 p.m. or before 5 in the morning.” Canby Snap Fitness also offers classes, personal training and award-winning support for every stage of your fitness journey. Find them at 1109 SW 1st Ave., Suite C, visit snapfitness.com/canby or call 503-266-5515.

s nap f itness - for the feeling We are finally starting to get back to normal, so now is a good time to discuss the benefits of adding a stretch and balance routine to your workout! Research has shown that stretching can help improve flexibility and consequently the range of motion of your joints. Better Flexibility Can Improve your performance in physical activities; decrease your risk of injuries; help your joints move through their full range of motion; enable your muscles to work most effectively; and stretching also increases blood flow to the muscle. Stretching Essentials: Ensure you do it safely and effectively, proper technique is key. Stretching incorrectly can actually do more harm than good. Use these tips to keep stretching safe: Don’t consider stretching before a warmup. You may hurt yourself if you stretch cold muscles. Before stretching, warm up with light walking, jogging or biking at low intensity for five to 10 minutes. Even better, stretch after your workout when your muscles are warm. Consider skipping stretches before an intense activity, such as sprinting or track and field activities. Some research suggests that pre-event stretching may actually decrease performance. Research has also shown that stretching immediately before an event weakens hamstring strength. Also try performing a “dynamic warmup.” A dynamic warmup involves performing movements similar to those in your sport or physical activity at a low level, then gradually increasing the speed and intensity as you warm up. If you are unsure how to get started or just thrive in a group activity, you can always join us for our weekly Stretch and Balance classes.
Benefits of Heart Rate Training: At Snap Fitness we believe that all fitness is valid fitness! Not everyone is looking for the perfect athletic body or bodybuilder physique. For the majority of us, we work out because we want to feel better about ourselves and increase our overall health. That does not mean, however, that we can’t still be competitive and get rewarded. MyZone Heart Rate Training: Meet the World Health Organization guidelines for physical activity every month, by earning Myzone Effort Points (MEPs) for physical activity every time you wear your Myzone device. The WHO’s guidelines for physical activity are: At least 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity. Or at least 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week. Or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous intensity activity throughout the week. That equates to 1300 MEPs per month. That’s what gets you your status so you can rise through the ranks to Myzone Hall of Fame. That’s what makes the difference. Fitness Just Got Fairer Using a highly accurate heart rate tracker allows you to see exactly how efficiently you are working out and make changes on the fly to get the most out of every activity. Since all exercise should count, this system pairs with your phone and our in-club system so it is functional anywhere, anytime! Did you know if your heart rate is too low you are not increasing the strength of your heart? Conversely, working your heart too hard can result in the body burning muscle for energy, not to mention the stress can damage your heart. Heart rate training can improve your workouts by making you more efficient, and even better, with Myzone you will get rewarded for your efforts!

SEASONAL ATTRACTION
By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer
L
et’s face it, folks, 2021 has been a scary year! In the wake of 2020, I think perhaps we were all lulled into a false sense of security, assuming 2021 could only be better. And while it hasn’t necessarily been much worse (we have seen a slowdown in COVID-related death rates, after all!), it also hasn’t been much better. So how can we combat those gloomy clouds hovering above, threatening to rain all over what remains of 2021? Well one way is to embrace a little scariness just in time for the Halloween season, and head on over to Scare Fair: Harbinger of Souls, going on at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds this October! Partnering for the second year in a row with Portland’s own Creatures of the Night, Marketing Coordinator of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, Tyler Nizer, is proud to announce that this year you can fight COVID or seasonalrelated ennui by attending their fully immersive walk-through haunt! Last year these two organizations united to bring us the first drive-through haunt, and it was so successful that they are returning and revitalizing the event this year; and it will be bigger, badder, and better than ever! Plus now you get to walk through instead of drive for more up-close and personal scares! Creatures of the Night is an allvolunteer local organization of haunted entertainment consultants which has been in existence since 2013. They partner with local community organizations to raise funds and make entertainment to support local businesses and bring communities together. Artistic Director, David D. Jones, is incredibly enthusiastic about his work and, in particular, about bringing people together in a time when we have been so isolated. He is grateful for the partnership they’ve developed with the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, and he’s especially excited to bring the scares! According to their website: “Creatures of the Night connects

communities and families through a feeling of wonder and trepidation. Creatures’ highest priority is safety – of the physical surroundings and internal process – for the actors and our guests. In our method of storytelling, we believe it is the inner child that is on a journey of challenging and overcoming fears, both physical and internal. Every participant is always in control of the experience and their level of comfort.” This is where Creatures of the Night has separated themselves from the pack. Not only are they the first company to use 360 degree photography and Augmented Reality in their haunts, but they are also the first and only company in Oregon to provide customers with a customizable experience! They have incorporated an extra feature that is referred to as the Creature Candle. The candle can be adjusted by each group to align with their level of comfort, so if you like it really scary, you can turn the candle down low. If you prefer it less scary, you can turn it up brighter; the idea is that you are in control. In order to ensure that every visitor has the perfect experience for them, the candle will be available for purchase before you start your tour. This year, the theme of the tour is “Harbinger of Souls” and you will encounter several souls at the event, including: Mary (a young woman in a white dress who haunts the rivers and forests), Ole Clem (a riverboat captain), the Cultists (mysterious figures in robes), Mark Forth (a WWII deep sea diver who went missing somewhere along the Willamette and still haunts it to this day), the Pacific Northwest Lake Monster, and the Caretaker (your guide). The Willamette Valley has a long and dark history. Older fisherman have spoken of the strange and the bizarre; of robed
figures skulking about the land adjacent to the river; of large monstrosities with elongated necks piercing the water’s surface in search of food; of retrieved fishing nets full of repulsive and horrible treasures. Only a girl in a white dress holding a candle offers hope and possible sanctuary. Although it’s never been confirmed, this girl seems to guide those who are in danger or who are lost to safety. Trust her at your own peril! This event is one of remarkable, family-friendly fun and entertainment! Being customizable, the experience can be as scary or as light-hearted as you’d like for it to be, but what they will not sacrifice is anyone’s safety. That is the number one priority for both Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Creatures of the Night. That means masks are required, social distancing will be practiced, and hours will be limited, but you
can still expect tons of fun and an incredibly immersive experience! Groups will be limited to 4 (as David states, that’s not only the safest but also the best way to experience the tour) so plan accordingly. Hours of operation are FridaySaturday, 7-10pm starting October 1st and running through the end of the month. For the little ones, Haunts Junior is a more kid-friendly, Scooby-Doo type experience that will be open from 6-7pm on Saturdays. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for Haunt Junior and can be purchased online at: CCScareFair.com.

TASTE OF THE TOWN
GWYNN’S COFFEEHOUSE
Gwynn’s Coffeehouse: A Place To Gather By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Andrew Sambuceto
E
very small town needs a Gwynn’s Coffeehouse: a place to gather, meet friends old and new, maybe get a little work or homework done, and enjoy some good food and a steaming mug of the finest coffee around. It didn’t happen by accident. “It was literally written into our business plan,” says Mallory Gwynn, who owns and operates the downtown cafe with his wife, Sheri, and daughters. “We’ve always wanted it that way: to be that place where you come and be made to feel special.” Mallory and his family spent most of their lives preparing and training themselves to run a place like Gwynn’s without ever realizing they were doing so. He spent 20 years in the coffee roasting and grinding business, primarily with Boyd’s when it was still locally owned before finishing his career with K&F Coffee Roasters, which is the oldest family-run specialty coffee roaster in Portland now and the exclusive coffee supplier for Gwynn’s. Two of his daughters were also working as baristas when the idea that would eventually become Gwynn’s began to take shape. “My daughters were talking one day, and they came to me and said ‘Dad, we should start our own coffee place,’” he recalls. “I think they were thinking drive-thru, but

[Sheri and I] were always thinking sit-down, because we love our community and we wanted a place where everyone could come and be respected, be loved and have a conversation.” The philosophy was set in stone (well, wood, but you get the idea) with a gift that the Gwynns received shortly after opening: a large, handpainted sign that has become the cafe’s guiding motto, “Canby’s Living Room.” Of course, all the love and community support in the world will only take a restaurant so far if they can’t deliver the goods, and the Gwynns have worked hard to cultivate a menu that is unique, inventive and relentlessly delicious. As anyone who follows Gwynn’s on social media probably could have guessed, it all started with the soup. “I’ve got about 27 different soups in my repertoire, and we rotate them through based on how often people ask for them,” Mallory explains. “All of our soups are from scratch; I don’t cheat that system. And they’re all pretty good, but I make them, so I’m a little biased. Mallory posts videos on Facebook announcing the day’s soup and other specials the cafe is offering. He describes making each one almost as a therapeutic exercise. “It’s just nice to be able to stand in the kitchen, cut the vegetables and feel good about what you’re making,” he says. “The rest of the staff comes in later in the morning and they try to guess the soup by the fragrance. And sometimes they can smell it in the alley!” In addition to their soup, Gwynn’s is just as well-known for its breakfast and lunch sandwiches — all carefully constructed combinations that Mallory terms “layers of flavor.” They include an English muffin topped with fried egg, ham, smoked gouda and sliced pear; a roast beef roll piled high with cheddar, horseradish, marinated onions and sweet and spicy pickles; and their worldfamous grilled cheese, which features an irresistible blend of three cheeses with a creamy, chive spread served on rustic white bread. Gwynn’s may not have the space or equipment to smoke their own meats or bake their own bread — but they make just about
come second. “We’ve always felt that our Number 1 product at Gwynn’s is the Gwynns,” Mallory says. “My belief is that everything can be duplicated, but we can’t be duplicated. It’s our heart and our mind to love everybody who comes through that door and to make them feel very special while they’re here. And if we can do that and serve great food in the meantime, then we have our spot.” Gwynn’s prides itself on being a truly family-operated business, with both parents and three of their five daughters currently working in the shop. Although the oldest doesn’t work there officially, she helps when they need her. “Working with family can be a challenge sometimes,” Mallory admits. “But one thing we know: our staff is going to show up to work. Our daughters, Teran, Alyssa, Tori, Leona, and Madyson, are all hard workers, and they work right alongside us even when we were working 13-hour days. When we are tired, they are tired, but they stay with us.”
everything else in house, including all of their sauces and dressings. “The thing about our sandwiches is they’re not like anybody else’s sandwiches,” Mallory says. “And we’re not trying to be like anybody else. We want them to be unique, and we believe they are unique. We searched out the best products that we could find to build our sandwiches.” But as hard as they work to deliver exceptional food and beverages, in the Gwynns’ minds, those ultimately
Asked if any grand-Gwynns might join the staff someday, too, Mallory laughs. “We have our two grandsons who come in once in a while. They’re always eager to help Pa unload the groceries.” Gwynn’s is open 8am to 3pm Monday through Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturday. Call them at 503-263-0200 or find them on Facebook for more information, or better yet, stop by in person at 190 NW 2nd Avenue in downtown Canby.

NEW BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
King’s Farm To Table
CANBY MARKET By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
L
ooking for a dinner feast or party spread fit for a king? Look no further than King’s Farm To Table, the newest and most delicious addition to downtown Canby’s business community. King’s started as a micro-farm and farm stand located on Stafford Road in Wilsonville, but has reinvented itself in its new digs as a specialty grocery market and scratch deli offering chef-prepared, locally sourced and inventive foods – with a little something for everyone. “What I really hope that we’re able to do is be all things to all people,” explains head chef Bill King, who owns the store with his wife Jennifer. “I want to span the broad demographic of the folks who live in Canby. We want to do a lot of the down home, comfort food, but then on the flip side, have some things that are a little fancier, pretty interesting and more sophisticated.” The deli offers a wide variety of prepared foods, from familiar staples like meatloaf, fried chicken, potato salad and macaroni

and cheese, to more adventurous and exotic dishes like pork loin with apricot glaze, edamame salad with mint, and roast chicken with a basil-chili vinaigrette. “Really bouncing across the spectrum between your more traditional foods and a more contemporary and creative approach,” is how Bill sums it all up. A big focus at the new storefront will be King’s famous handcrafted barbecue, which samples the best regional techniques from across the United States. “Every day, we’ll have Texas brisket, western Carolina-style pulled pork, and Tennessee baby back ribs,” King says. “We’ll also be doing barbecue chicken with a rotating variety of seasonal fruit barbecue sauces and flavors.”
country market meets urban deli In addition to King’s chef-prepared dishes, the store features a wide variety of locally sourced, high quality products and grocery items, including craft jams, jellies and applesauce, gourmet meat sticks, hot sauce, pickles, canned produce, potato chips and other snacks, syrup, dried fruit and other condiments. “We try to keep most everything local,” Bill says. “We’re about 85 to 90% local, so that’s the first thing we need to check off. And then, it’s just really about quality. I mean, if I taste something and it’s delicious, then I want it in the store. I think that’s the simplest way to put it.” King’s Farm To Table partnered with more than a dozen local farms and producers when it was a simple farm stand on Stafford Road, and Bill says that will continue with the move into town. Some of the growers Bill has worked with include Martinez Family Farm and South Barlow Berries in Canby,
Blonde Girl Honey in Dayton, Boring Goats in (you guessed it) Boring, The Country Egg in Sandy, Howard Calcagno Farms in Aurora and Jack Siri Produce in Oregon City. While King’s upscale culinary offerings would not seem out of place on any street corner in metropolitan Seattle or downtown Portland, the decor and atmosphere at King’s Farm to Table offers a distinctly rural feel, with countrythemed art and farm-style furnishings and tables. “I kind of view this as countrystore-meets-urban-market,” Bill says. “We wanted to have a little bit of a country vibe here.” King’s Farm To Table offers a wide array of chef-prepared foods to go, along with a well-stocked marketplace of excellent foodstuffs. They do not offer dine-in service, however. Visit kingsfarmtotablecanbymarket.com for more information, or pay them a visit in the Holly Street Mall at 241 NW 2nd Avenue to see all of their amazing products for yourself!

MEET THE ATHLETE
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY ROTH HEATING & COOLING
JACOB STRAND By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
C
anby Cougar senior lineman and tight end Jacob Strand is destined to play Division I football, but to look at him, you might be surprised to learn he doesn’t already. With his 6-foot-5-inch, 270-pound frame, he already towers over many of the fellow high school student-athletes who have the misfortune of lining up across from him. And it’s not just size; Jacob exhibits a level of skill and athleticism in the trenches that Canby head football coach Joyce says is rarely seen in a high school player. “In my career, I’ve coached a number of lineman who went on to play in the PAC-12,” Joyce says. “And Jacob, far and away, is the only one I could say is a true PAC12 lineman while still in high school. The others developed into that, but Jacob’s there already.”
Joyce says he saw the player’s tremendous potential during his first year at the helm of the Cougars when Jacob was a sophomore, and his athleticism and ability were on full display even during the truncated football season this spring. 28 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Jacob (who was ranked the No. 1 offensive lineman in the state by Prep Redzone Oregon earlier this year, and has ranked highly in other outlets as well) will play his final season in Canby this fall. “We are just happy that he has another year under the lights at Cougar Stadium,” Joyce says. “It should be a fun time for Jacob, his teammates and the school.” As if that weren’t enough, Jacob is also one of at least a half-dozen student-athletes on the Canby Cougar football team with a perfect grade-point average of 4.0. “And he has the best mullet in the game of football,” Joyce joked. “He’s absolutely a tremendous athlete, just an unbelievable kid. We’re really excited about Jacob. I remember watching his highlight reel last season and just saying, ‘This kid can play at a very, very high level. And Oregon State recognized that really quick.” Jacob officially committed to play for the Beavs this summer, following a private workout that Oregon State University offensive line coach Jim Michalczik offered at the earliest possible opportunity. The NCAA lifted all Covid-19 recruiting restrictions on June 1st, and that was the same day that OSU invited Jacob out for the private workout. The offer came quickly, too. “It was a really great thrill to get a call from him and the O-line coach saying, ‘Hey, we gave him an offer right when we saw him because he was that impressive,” says Joyce. “I was in shock when I got the offer — truly life-changing,” Jacob recalled. “I was hoping all day that the time would come, and when it did, I was at a loss of words. My coach told me one day that I had the possibility to play football
“I’d like to thank my parents for pushing me every day to be the best man on and off the field.” in college. That statement has been my biggest motivation, pushing me through all the hard times.” Jacob’s recruitment from Canby High School, which Joyce and his coaching staff are working hard to put back on the radar of college recruiters after a few down seasons, was hailed as a “great find” by several scouts, according to The Oregonian’s Andrew Nemec.
Strand joins a stellar recruiting class for Oregon State, which already includes 247Sports four-star center Dylan Lopez and a pair of three-star cornerbacks: Carlos Mack and Skyler Thomas. Jacob’s final season at Canby High School kicked off September 3rd and will continue at least through October 29th, and hopefully much longer depending on how the Cougs fare in this year’s playoffs. I know all of us here in Canby will be rooting hard!
“First things first, I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity,” Jacob said in his June 29th announcement that he was committing to OSU over several other offers. “I’d like to thank my parents for pushing me every day to be the best man on and off the field. Thank you to all the coaches who have taught me in the past.”

f there’s one thing the team at Cornerstone Wealth Management here in Canby wants you to know, it’s that they are here for you, regardless of where you are in your financial journey or where you want to be headed. “Everyone has to start somewhere and at some point in time. Our team is ready to help at every stage,” says Matt Stutes, the firm’s CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and son of founder Chris Stutes. Chris began his financial career in 1992 after leaving his law practice in Louisiana. After starting his financial career at Edward Jones, he joined LPL Financial and founded Cornerstone Wealth Management in 2007, “I originally wanted to be an attorney because I wanted to help people,” Chris explains. “Being in the financial business for 29 years now, I have had the chance to help so many individuals plan for their future, reach their financial goals and have a successful retirement. It’s incredibly rewarding.”
“
The financial services industry has changed in many ways over the past 30 years, as have the global economy, stock market and many other factors that affect it. In the course of his career, Chris has found the best way to adapt to a rapidly changing and often unpredictable marketplace is a well-balanced team. “We came to the realization that the best way to serve a customer’s needs is together,” Chris says. “So at Cornerstone, we really operate as a robust team, with lots of resources behind the scenes. We work really well together and help each other’s clients with the different areas of specialization.” The team consists of the three advisors, licensed assistant, Jennifer Kraxberger and the marketing/administrative assistant, Lauren Stutes. All five team members work to support clients while managing day to day operations together.
We want to be a resource, a part of your team and a piece of the puzzle that helps you build your wealth.
Another key member of the team is financial advisor Mitch Magenheimer, who partnered with Chris in 2010. His specialties include helping clients reach their goals and plan for retirement. “I enjoy being able to simplify things for clients, taking things they may feel are complex and overwhelming and putting it into terms they can understand,” Mitch says. “A lot of it comes down to financial planning. There are a lot of services we can offer, from business planning, estate planning and planning for retirement, but most of it starts with a financial plan.” 30 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
The importance of a financial plan is a key reason that Chris encouraged Matt to get his financial planning certification when he joined the team in 2013. “You need a solid financial plan to identify and reach your goals,” Chris explains. “A lot of places say they do financial plans, but there’s something different about sitting down with a CFP® who has that training and experience.”
”
At Cornerstone, it ultimately comes down to building trusted relationships more than dollars and cents. “We want to be a resource, a part of your team and a piece of the puzzle that helps you build your financial future.” Chris, Mitch and Matt are available to help you today, reach out to get started on your financial journey.

THE ART SCENE
ARTIST PROFILES
SHANE ANDERSON ▶ Shane Anderson is a Minnesota based Fine Artist and Public Artist. His art is colorful, vibrant, lively, and filled with interesting details. He takes bright colors and bold forms to create works of art that invite exploration and spark conversation. Shane’s murals can be found throughout the Midwest, as well as exotic locations like Kenya, Thailand, and the Virgin Islands. Shane’s introduction into the world of professional art started with St. Paul’s huge public art installation of the Peanuts statues. From 2001-2006 he designed and created 8 large statues which gave him the confidence and experience to take the leap to becoming a muralist. In 2007, Shane started displaying and selling his personal work, and since then has become a household name in the art scene. Shane’s art has been sold to national and international collectors, as well as being commissioned worldwide for murals by large corporations, small businesses, non-profits and private collectors. ◾
HEATHER ANDREWS ▶ I have always been fascinated by the natural world, from the soil and stones on which we walk, to the creepy crawly critters that roam the earth, on up to birds which soar through invisible currents of air. Ever since I was a child I would seek out these places, finding peace in the solitude and quiet which nature has to offer. Inspired by this love for the planet, I pursued an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry, which was shortly followed by a masters in entomology, earned from Virginia Tech. In addition to my interest in science, I’m also in love with various forms of artistic expression through visual art, as well as music. During my spare time I enjoy drawing fantastical creatures, which tend to emerge from the paper as though through their own power. Creating jewelry is yet another of my interests, and many of these items also reflect the natural world, being decorated with various flora and fauna. I have a line of jewelry made from beetle elytra, and also make jewelry from wire and beads. Playing the harp has allowed me to share my passion for music with people, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play for others, whether at local cafes in the Portland area, or for a party or wedding. Please feel free 38 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
to contact me about playing the harp for any occasion, if you are interested in certain items on my website, or if you have any pressing insect-related questions. Finally, I enjoy time spent outdoors experiencing the sights and smells of the mountains and oceans. There is something incredibly satisfying about being able to hike to the top of a mountain and gaze out at the surrounding peaks and valleys, or kayaking on a lake that’s as smooth and placid as a mirror. I find inspiration in such settings, both for my music and art, and also find these experiences to be rejuvenating, allowing me to feel whole and complete. I strongly encourage you to do the same, go out and find a beautiful, pristine place, and focus on deeply inhaling the clear air, listening to the birds and insects (or perhaps complete silence), and filling your eyes with the incredible sights. ◾

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Retro Revival Vintage Written By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer, Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
Vintage furniture, clothing, art, and home goods with a mid-century vibe
R
etro Revival is Canby’s very own amazing vintage retailer, located on the corner of Grant and Northwest Third in downtown. The store is a bit like life, at least as Forrest Gump described it, in that it’s a lot like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re going to get! The store’s inventory changes by the day and sometimes even by the hour, so it’s always fresh and new — and you can never predict what you might stumble upon. “I have all kinds of vintage goods, from the 1930s to the ’70s, though I’m creeping into the ’80s as time goes on,” owner Suzi Joy says with a laugh. Suzi has three rules when it comes to putting something on the shelf or the display floor: “I have three tenets: quirky, colorful and useful,” she says. “And if it hits two of those three, it’s pretty good. I only need two, but hey — if it’s got all three, that’s even better.” Of course, depending on your perspective, virtually anything can be quirky, colorful and useful, so there’s no end to what you can expect to find at Retro Revival: everything from furniture to vintage clothing to home decor, and collectibles to books to mixed media. It’s this latter category that really sets Retro Revival apart from many other vintage and antique stores. It’s there that Suzi invites customers to let their creative juices flow and imagine their own masterpieces, whether they be collage, assemblage or other forms of mixed media — or simply an accent to add to their latest quirky, colorful Retro find to make it even quirkier and more colorful. “It’s for the artists, and it’s really amazing how many artists are in this town,” Suzi explains. “But we wanted to offer something really different, something you can’t get at a Michael’s or a Joann’s
42 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
or Fred Meyer.” The mixed media offerings span an astonishing range of knickknacks and found objects, including piano keys, Scrabble tiles, vacuum tubes from antique radios, old letters, postcards, bookmarks and other paper goods known as “ephemera.” “Just a wide variety of things to play around with, things that are different, things that you might not normally find,” Suzi sums up. “Mixed media is becoming more popular as people are doing more home crafts. My vintage clothing has become more popular because more people are sewing their own clothes, so they’re able to alter them to fit a bit better.” Retro’s furniture and home decor is sturdy, unique and designed to add character and individuality to any home or personal space. Every piece has a story, Suzi says, and usually a long one at that. “I get this question a lot: ‘Are all the customers in your store over 40? Do you ever see the young kids?’” she says with a laugh. “I see the young kids in my store every day. They love the retro and vintage stuff. They’re looking for things that are unique and different, not mass-produced and disposable like so much of the stuff that’s getting made today.” Retro’s warm, friendly and knowledgeable staff puts their emphasis on customer experience over everything else. “We want you to feel a sense of adventure every time you walk into our store,” Suzi says. “And I try really hard to price my stuff to go home with people. I don’t want to own it forever. I’m not a museum. I want everyone to be able to find something they didn’t know they needed. I want everyday people to have nice things.” Retro Revival is located at 280 North Grant Street across from Wait Park. Call them at 503-468-7090 or visit online at retrorevivalvintage.com.

COVER FEATURE
THE BOOK NOOK
CANBY’S PLACE TO EXPLORE
The Book Nook By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto Photography
O
n the corner of Grant and Northwest 2nd Avenue in downtown Canby, a world of all things books, games and gifts can be found inside The Book Nook, Canby’s very own locally owned and operated bookstore! The store has gone through several moves and expansions since it opened four years ago, but its existence began as a literal “nook” - just a few shelves tucked into the corner of an existing business. The cash register was located in what owner Megan Waterman still laughingly refers to as “my Harry Potter closet under the stairs.” But if the shop started out as the Book 1 version of Harry — cute, small and full of potential — The Book Nook’s current digs in the Caldera building at 294 N.W. 2nd Avenue would more resemble Harry from Book 5, confidently training fellow wizards to confront the forces of evil from their secret base in the Room of Requirement. The Book Nook leveled up to the larger and more prominent space in February, moving from a suite at the Graham Building that is now occupied by Art-O-Maddic. “It was a weird time to grow into a larger space, but our customers have really rallied to keep us going and growing during this past year with the pandemic and shutdowns,” Megan says. “We live in a really amazing town of readers. You hear the ‘shop local, shop small’ mantra shouted everywhere, but Canby really practices that. We’re so blessed with all of our customers. She was delighted to be able to bring retail and shopping back to the building many residents still remember as the former Parsons pharmacy and gift shop. And that’s not all they’ve returned to the location; “We had actua l ly purchased some of the
44 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
old Parsons counters from the new building owners. So it was really fun to bring them home.” The location not only offered more room to expand the store’s new books, games, art supplies and children’s departments — it also featured two large windows to better show off products and the endlessly imaginative displays built by Book Nook employee Kayla DeShazer. “Everything that we hoped would happen with the move has happened,” Megan says. “We’ve been able to expand our new book offerings, and our gifts have really grown in the space. Customers tell us we’re just a lot more visible and easier to find. We’re not the bookstore hiding on the back of the building anymore.” The Book Nook has also greatly evolved from its early days of buying and selling used books. That’s still a part of its business (used books that are still in good shape can be traded in for store credit, which can then be used for up to 50% of the purchase price of another used book), but sales of new titles and authors across all genres have exploded in recent years. “Over the last few years, we’ve been ordering more and more new books for our customers,” Megan explains. “That part of the store has just grown and grown, which is really exciting.”
She estimates that the store carries over 8,000 new and used book titles — with the ability to have any book still in print shipped to the store for free. Their nerdy and literarythemed gifts, mugs and apparel have also been very popular, and the store offers art supplies and journals for folks interested in exploring and telling their own stories. Tabletop games are the most recent addition to their retail list, and they’re “just another way to experience a story,” says Megan. “The one thing that we always try to keep in mind as we add new things to the store is that there are all different ways to experience and celebrate stories.” For her, it all comes down to helping customers find the one thing they need — whether it’s the hot new title from a bestselling author or something one-of-a-kind, like a family Bible from the 1800s.
“We had a customer that was moving and just wanted it to go to a good home,” she recalls. “It was this huge, beautiful Bible with the big metal clasps. And it was lovely, but I didn’t know who I could sell it to. Well, the very next week, someone came in and just fell in love with it. She was restoring an old farmhouse and said it was just the piece she needed. It’s so fun to see the vintage pieces go from one home to another.” The Book Nook now hosts regular game nights where locals play Dungeons & Dragons and other games (see booknookcanby.com for details). The store is also pet-friendly and extremely active on social media. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok for fun posts, reading recommendations and other news.

Look to the October skies ... If you live in the northern hemisphere, you’ll be rewarded for keeping your eyes to the skies in October, as the Draconid Meteor Shower can be seen. It contains a single comet that is visible exclusively in the northern hemisphere between October 6th and 10th. An even more impressive meteor shower that is visible in both hemispheres is the Orionid meteor shower, which runs from October 2nd until early November. It is named after Orion as it is usually visible in the same part of the sky as the constellation. At the peak of the meteor shower, as many as 20 meteors are visible every hour Reprinted courtesy of NationaldaysCalendar.com

NATIONAL SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DAY!
Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day is observed annually on the third Wednesday in October. The Chamber of Commerce’s primary objective is strengthening local businesses of all sizes. The best way to honor this organization is to use the services of local chamber businesses. The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce was established in 1911, and it has had a hand in many developments that make Canby what it is today. Many of our local leaders cut their teeth on volunteer leadership by serving on the Canby Area Chamber’s Board of Directors. How to Carve the Perfect Pumpkin
By Donovan Darling, Active Media Contributing Writer
Everyone can be an artist at pumpkin carving because it’s actually easier than it looks. These 10 terrifying tips will have your gory gourds looking great for the entire spooky season. 1. START WITH THE PERFECT PUMPKIN Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve. Wash it with warm soapy water to prevent mold and dry it off with a paper towel. 2. CUT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP For the lid, instead of cutting the top, cut the bottom. Cutting your lid from the bottom helps prevent the sides from caving in later. This also keeps moisture inside the pumpkin longer. 3. SCOOP OUT ALL THE PULP (strings and seeds) in a spiral motion until the pumpkin is clean inside, not one scoop at a time, and everything will come out in one drop. You can use the special “claw” that comes with a pumpkin carving kit, an ice cream scoop, or a large wooden spoon. 4. YOU CAN USE PREMADE DESIGNS from a pumpkin carving kit, from the internet, or design one yourself. For your own design, sketch it out on paper first and trace the sketch with a thick marker. Whichever design you choose, use masking tape to tape the design to the front of your pumpkin. Poke holes along the lines of your design with the poker from a pumpkin carving kit, or a pencil will also work.
5. WHEN YOU’RE READY TO CARVE, put the pumpkin in your lap with a towel (or wear pants you don’t mind getting dirty). Carving is easier when the pumpkin “face” is close to you, and this can reduce neck or back strain instead of leaning over the dining table. A sharp medium serrated knife is best for cutting medium to large features, and an X-Acto knife or small knife from a pumpkin carving kit is best for carving the small details. 6. WITH YOUR SMALL KNIFE, start by cutting the small details first so the pumpkin is more intact; if you cut the large features first you can accidentally break it. After the small details are cut, cut out the large features with your medium serrated knife. When everything is roughly cut out, you can use the small knife to clean up the edges of your design. You can also use the discarded pieces creatively! The pulp can make a great tongue, vomit, or messy hair. Smaller pieces can be used for spikes, eyebrows, or teeth. Be creative!
8. CREATE A CHIMNEY You can use a real candle such as a votive, or you can skip this step and use an electric candle. For a real flame, light the candle on the bottom lid and place the pumpkin over it. After a few minutes the “ceiling” will have blackened. Cut around this blackened spot to make a small hole to vent the candle heat. 9. SPRINKLE CINNAMON INSIDE Cinnamon will prevent fungus, and when you light the candle your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. 10. ROAST THE PUMPKIN SEEDS! After removing the pulp, wash the seeds in a colander and dry between a towel. In a large bowl, toss the seeds with olive oil, salt, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper, or season to your liking. Spread the seeds evenly on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes, tossing the seeds every 5 minutes for even browning. When the seeds are golden brown and radiate a cozy nut aroma, they’re done! Pumpkin seeds are a great source of fiber, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and iron.
7. KEEP YOUR PUMPKIN FRESH! Rub vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin Enjoy your jack-o’-lantern for the whole haunted holiday! still shrivels a few days later, you can revive it by soaking it face down in cold water for up to eight hours.

A
t Cutsforth’s Market, you can find fresh produce, locally sourced meat and fresh-caught seafood, handcrafted coffee, an astonishing array of wine and beer, floral arrangements, gifts, a hot deli and, of course, all of your general grocery needs. But for my money, nothing beats the Cutsforth’s Bakery in the morning, with its ovens overflowing with the aromas of freshbaked bread, cakes, cookies and doughnuts.
This is Bakery Manager April Rhodes’ domain, one she’s rightfully earned after 45 years of experience in the baking business, starting out as a humble pie-maker and working her way up. She says she’s stayed in the business as long as she has because it’s been a fun and rewarding career. “It’s like quick art,” she explains. “You get your creativity out, you clean it up, and you get to see people smile when they bite into your food. Plus, I’m from a large family. Being a cookie maker in a big family can be pretty important.” Cutsforth’s Bakery’s recipe for success includes a generous helping of triedand-true, made-from-scratch standards - with a healthy sprinkle of new flavors and formulas when the mood strikes. “As a customer, I like to try something new,” April says. “So you have your staples, but then we ask, ‘What could we do that’s a little different?’” So of course they employ the same strategy with the one item that the bakery is probably best-known for; “Ah yes, the doughnuts,” she says with a chuckle. “We would be in trouble without them. If we ever had a day without doughnuts, we would definitely hear about it from the customers.” 60 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Much more work goes into the hundreds of fresh, delicious doughnuts the bakery produces every day than you’d realize. “It’s very labor intensive,” April explains. “Our glazes are made from scratch, and the doughnuts are all cut by hand. We’ve got a crew that comes in at 9 every night and they work until 5 in the morning... And [the doughnuts] can be a little touchy. They can be affected by the weather, the humidity. So if you ever come in and notice maybe the bars are a little smaller than usual — that’s how you know they’re handcrafted.” Cutsforth’s doughnuts have been consistently rated the best in town in poll after poll. And like their other baked goods, the crew makes a wide variety of classics, with some rotating seasonal selections and the odd experiment every now and then. That includes the fall favorite apple and pumpkin spice doughnuts, the Bigfoot doughnuts and hubcap-sized “Texas doughnuts” — which are as much fun to look at as they are to eat. “We have a lot of scratch formulas, but I like that we have the freedom to play around, try new things and tweak things here and there,” she says. “We even get recipes from customers sometimes that really take off.” Cutsforth’s bakery also offers a wide variety of custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and other events. Most of their formulas are from scratch, including a carrot cake recipe inherited from Elsie Cutsforth herself. “Cupcakes seem to be the latest, biggest craze for weddings,” April says. “We’ve had about two years of cupcake crazy. And we have a really big selection of gourmet cupcakes.” The biggest thing to remember about large or custom orders is to call early, or better yet, come in person to ensure your cake looks exactly as you expect. To reach the Cutsforth’s Bakery, visit the store at 225 NE 2nd Avenue in downtown Canby or call 503-266-2016.

cutsforth’s A Canby Tradition For Over 93 Years
A Canby Tradition For Over 93 Years Written by Robert Ecker
1928
… Calvin Coolidge was the U.S. President, and pro business. Penicillin was discovered. The Iron Lung was invented. The iconic Boston Garden arena opened. And in Canby, Oregon… where approximately 800 people lived, on Friday March 9th, 1928, Frank Thomas Cutsforth opened a meat market on First Street. Today, Cutsforth Market celebrates over 93 years of providing people in and around the Canby area with quality meats, local produce, dry goods, a homemade bakery a wide selection of deli food, and so much more. Four generations of Cutsforths have worked for the family business. While Frank T. was the first generation, Frank David Front Counter 1930 Cutsforth is the third generation, and currently the store’s President and one of the owners. Frank D. recounts the story of why his granddad opened the meat market in Canby. “Frank T. was a meat cutter with his brother in Gervais. Wanting to be independent from his brother, he moved to Canby and started his meat shop.” There were more changes to come.
62 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Cutsforth Family Frank D. says that meat lockers were added in the 1930s. “There were no refrigerators in the homes. It was a rural town. Many raised their own beef, pork and chicken.” Residents would bring in their own beef, pork and game, cut it, and store it in the Cutsforth meat lockers, along with their vegetables and fruit too. Customers would come in one or more times each week, and pick up their food as they needed. Tanner Cutsforth, son of Frank D. and one of the fourth generation family members to work at Cutsforth Market, tells of 1952 how hard running a meat locker was back then. Ice was delivered, via truck, in 300lb blocks. This was used not only to keep everything cool, but was also used to sell 25lb blocks of ice to customers. The Cutsforth meat lockers were used through the mid-1950s.
At the age of 12, Frank T’s son Glenn, the second generation, began working alongside his father. While learning the trade, Glenn married Elsie Egli in 1937. Elsie joined the family business originally as a meat cutter. Glenn and Elsie bought the business from Frank T. in 1947, and Cutsforth Meat Market became one of Canby’s very first grocery stores. Frank D. remembers his mom, Elsie, as an “exceptional visionary. She could always see stuff happening moving forward. The trend then was to add dry goods. Elsie said that ‘it grew and grew and grew. Then, all of a sudden, you have a supermarket!’” In 1960, Cutsforth Market moved to Second Avenue (Holly Mall). Cutsforth Market added groceries, such as dairy, baked goods, canned foods, and other dry goods. Tanner believes that his grandma Elsie was “the workhorse…the heart and soul of Cutsforth Market.” He added that his granddad Glenn loved interacting with customers and staff as he could “entertain.” Glenn and Elsie’s son Frank D. began working in the business in 1957. Five years later, he became the Produce Manager. Increasing to 20,000 square feet, the store moved to the current location in 1974. Cutsforth was one of the first grocery stores in Oregon to have its own bakery in 1986. By 1980, Frank D., the third generation Cutsforth Thriftway employee, became the Cutsforth Thriftway owner. Frank D. would be joined by five other co-owners… his five children. Brooks, the oldest, manages the Cutsforth Properties. The second oldest, Christian, owns a wholesale pottery business in Portland. Kelsey Cordill (Cutsforth) is the CFO of Cutsforth. Joel assists with store operations and “does a very good job” of managing the craft beers and wine bar, according to Frank D. Joel coordinates special tastings
1974 with local breweries and wineries for Cutsforth customers. Tanner is the youngest of the five. He handles the marketing, updates the website, tackles the remodeling including woodworking around the store, signage, etc. Why has Cutsforth Thriftway Market been so successful for so long? Frank D. replied, “We’ve been here 93 years… and keep working at it.” I recently stumbled upon this sign that read… “Wonderful PEOPLE...Friendly SERVICE… SMALL Town Charm.” Where do you think that I found this statement that harkens back to how a number of stores operated decades ago…? I located these wise words on the Cutsforth Market Facebook page. How appropriate. 93 years, and still going strong!

27TH CUTSFORTH’S CRUISE IN 2021
P
eople who love cars and trucks came from near and far to spend time at a cruise-in on August 28 at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center in Canby. Not just a few cars and trucks, but more than 550 with their proud owners parked in rows where only the week before had stood carnival rides, food booths, and exhibits. Canby Rotarian and Past Club President Frank Cutsforth assembled a team of car club members, local business owners, community organizations, and Canby Rotarians to provide a fun day for families and car lovers. It was very successful as it has been for 27 years. This well-attended event was successful despite the complications of meeting pandemic requirements because of cooperation, a can-do attitude, and good leadership. Among the volunteers were 30 Canby Rotarians who did announcing, award presentations, event photography, publicity,
traffic control, and cooked and sold food at the event. The popular Zenner sausage dog and hamburger food booth was successful because of the support of many of those at the event willing to wait in line for lunch to support the projects of Canby Rotary. The cruise-in is more than a display of interesting cars and trucks. It is a place to make memories, share friendship, socialize with people who share common interests, and a family-friendly event near the end of summer. The more serious purposes of promoting interest in and preservation of classic automobiles and promoting Canby as a place to live and work are also important. We are looking forward to the 2022 Cutsforth’s Cruise In.

From The President Afghan refugees are suffering fear, loss, and grief that accompany conflict… deeply entrenched ideologies are colliding in communities of mothers and children. For some, peace is elusive. We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary provides training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. While 16 million volunteer hours and 1.2 million Rotarians may not sound grassroots, I can assure you that the majority of Rotary’s peacemaking work is grassroots in nature: some of it reaching to countries like Afghanistan.

Conflict has no part in Canby’s future. If you’ve been frustrated by the political/ideological whiplash in our own community, there is hope. In October 2021 we will gather Canby’s leaders for a Canby Community Summit. This first-of-its-kind gathering of community leaders for an evening of collaborative conversation will strengthen mutual respect and teamwork among Canby’s civic, educational, business, nonprofit and spiritual leaders. anby Rotary strongly supports economic and community development projects because a strong community is more sustainable and livable for all its residents. Canby is fortunate to be the site of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center because it brings many people, businesses, and organizations to our community who spend money at locally and expose visitors to the community. The big news is the Clackamas County Fair returned in August with all of its activities and excitement. Canby Rotarians and their family members were volunteer greeters at the blue gate entrance. The 36 volunteers donated more than 150 hours of service welcoming visitors to the fair over the five days it was open. The successful Clackamas County Junior Livestock Auction was strongly supported by Canby Rotary. Canby Rotarian Chris Nichols was part of the group that planned, organized, and conducted the market animal auction that included cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats on the closing day of the fair. Youth participants from 4-H and Future Farmers of America had the chance to raise, show, and sell their animals for a real life educational experience. The auction

is the feature event of a several month process involving local youth, family members, adult leaders, and community mentors. Canby Rotary was an auction buyer and contributor to add-on funds to encourage the future of agri-business in Clackamas County. The well-known, world class Clackamas County Rodeo was another successful part of the fair. Rotarian and former Club President Gary Linton is a member of the Canby Rodeo Committee who donated many hours to planning and hosting the rodeo this year. Rodeo has a deep connection to our county and to the rural areas of our nation. County fairs, rodeos, and many other community events rely on volunteers and financial sponsors. Did you know that maintaining your home is one of the best things you can do to preserve or improve the value of your home when you are ready to sell? Putting off cleaning your roof, keeping your gutters clean and free of debris, repairing a leak under the sink, deciding to paint the exterior “next year,” pruning and keeping up with landscape, fixing the foundation vent that the neighborhood cats have been coming and going from, among many other tasks, can actually cost you money on the sale of your property. Items that are simple “elbow grease” tasks, if let go, can lead to costly repairs. During the home inspection period, when you are selling your home, these are items that translate to “dollars out of your pocket” when it comes time to close on the sale of your home! As well, homes that are maintained, tend to leave better first impressions on a buyer! If you are unsure of what needs to be done to maintain your home, feel free to reach out to any of us! We have resources available and can provide you with names and numbers if there are tasks that you want to hire out or don’t feel comfortable doing. Our goal when listing a home is to be proactive before your home hits the market, and in turn, keep you from spending extra dollars during the home inspection period or giving up dollars at close. We have provided below a simple Fall home maintenance checklist! Start with just a few items a weekend and you can be finished with your quarterly maintenance before the wet weather sets in!
FALL CHECKLIST EXTERIORS
Drain, clean, and store your outdoor equipment. At the end of the season, don’t forget to drain your lawn equipment. Gas goes through a chemical change which can lead to gum and other harmful deposits that can damage your equipment. Treating your lawn with fertilizer in the autumn will trigger renewed growth of both blades and roots, so your lawn will be thick and healthy again before winter’s colder temperatures set in. Planting next year’s spring bulbs while the soil is cool will provide beautiful blooms next spring. For best results, plant them in an area that gets full sun. Gutters, gutters, and more gutters! We all have them, we all dislike them. We can all agree that this is one job you can’t afford to dismiss. Get those gutters inspected and cleaned out. While you’re up there, it is a great time to check those shingles and skylights. Even a visual check can go a long way. Be prepared for ice. Have Ice Melt and a shovel handy in the front of your garage. Nothing is worse than waking up to a snowed-in car and not being prepared.
INTERIORS
Take a moment and really look at your windows and exterior doors. Make sure windows are sealed tightly and no air is coming through. A good way to check the seal of your exterior doors is to place a piece of paper in the door and close it. You should not be able to move the paper easily. If you can, it is time to replace your weather stripping. While you are checking your windows, give them all a good clean inside and out. During the darker months, this really helps the natural light shine through. Ready the water heater by draining it fully and clearing out any debris that have settled in the tank. This is also a great time to look over your supply lines and pressure relief valve for proper function. Check your furnace for filter replacements and care of the overall system. If you have not had it serviced recently, this would be a good time to take care of it before the whole city turns cold and everyone is needing the local HVAC to assist their failing heat system.

illiam Andrew Trumm, better known to all as “Bill,” was born February 12th, 1920 in Shaw, Oregon. At age 101, he may be the oldest World War II veteran still living in the state, but on top of that, he is without a doubt one of our most remarkable local residents. Bill served as an aviation machinist in the United States Navy for four years, from 1941 to 1945, stationed on the strategically significant island of Guadalcanal at Henderson Field — an airstrip that would prove crucial to the Allies’ eventual victory. Originally built by the Japanese Empire, Henderson was one of the Allied Forces’ first major victories in the Pacific theater, and the Japanese fought fiercely in several attempts to regain it. It was the site of three major land battles, seven large naval battles and near-daily aerial battles, finally culminating in the decisive Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November, 1942, which marked the last Japanese attempt to bomb Henderson Field or land enough ground troops to reclaim it. Much later, Bill recalled how everyone on base would sprint for the foxholes during air raids by the Japanese. Conditions there were dark, cold and miserable, and yet... “There were no atheists in those foxholes,” he said with a laugh. Bill worked hard to connect with the natives while he was there. One man was so taken with his commando knife that he offered to trade his sister in marriage for it. Bill carefully explained that he needed to keep his knife, but he thanked the man for his interest. Bill returned home after the war ended and married his high school sweetheart, Mary “Marie” Nelke on November 28th, 1945 at St. Joseph Church in Salem. The Trumms built their first house together on Wallace Road in south Salem, and in 1955 they brought home the first of their three girls, Diane Stetzel of Salem. Their other 2 daughters - Karen Hunt of Canby and Susan Trumm of Medford - came home soon after, all adopted through Catholic charities. Bill tried his hand at farming but spent most of his career as a claims investigator for the SAIF Corporation, a large provider of worker’s compensation insurance. He retired in 1977
and moved from his farm in Oregon City to Canby. His lifelong passion for flying led him to join the Experimental Aircraft Association, an international organization of aviation enthusiasts with more than 200,000 members worldwide. He was a recreational pilot and built five airplanes for his own personal use. When his daughter Karen took him to get his driver’s license renewed at age 92, she joked that it meant he had to live at least another eight years until the license expired. He did just that, celebrating his 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and community members at a party in the Antonia Ballroom above the Backstop Bar & Grill in February of 2020. The celebration was followed by sorrow, however, when his beloved wife Marie passed away on July 4th, 2020, just a few months before the couple would have celebrated their 75th anniversary. It was clear that she and Bill had an amazing life together. Three years ago, Bill experienced a leg amputation resulting from a circulatory problem. He surprised everyone by successfully learning to walk on a prosthetic — despite the conventional medical wisdom that said he was too old. He continues to walk a few times a week with the help of his physical therapist, Donna Parry. Bill is a beloved member of the Canby community and a proud World War II veteran. Thank you for your service Bill!

LEGAL MATTERS
REIF & HUNSAKER, P.C.
The Current Status Of Landlord Tenant Law O
n August 26th, the United States Supreme Court overturned the federal eviction moratorium (announced by the Center for Disease Control CDC), meaning that there are no additional eviction restrictions on the federal level as a result of Coronavirus.
However, there are still a few issues existing on the state level. First, as the result of “emergency orders” from the governor, Oregon’s traditional 72-hour notice to terminate a tenancy for nonpayment of rent is currently a 10-day (240-hour) notice. Don’t forget, these notices, if served by mail, must include 3-days for mailing, and the date of issuance does not apply . . . so a three-day notice becomes a seven-day notice and a 10-day notice becomes a 14-day notice.
So, bearing in mind those exceptions, we are back to “normal” for landlord-tenant matters. EXCEPT – just before Coronavirus hit the US, Oregon Senate Bill 608 was passed, making major changes to Landlord-Tenant law OREGON SENATE BILL 608 which will remain in effect regardless of Coronavirus. The most egregious of these is the elimination of a landlord’s right to terminate month-to-month rentals after the first year of occupancy.
... made major changes to LandlordTenant law, which will remain in effect regardless of Coronavirus.
Second, there is an automatic 60-day stay of any eviction case issued by the court if the tenant has applied for any rental assistance and informs the landlord in any manner that they have applied. If a tenant does apply for rent assistance, the eviction is “paused” so that the tenant’s application has time to process. If the tenant receives the assistance, the case should be dismissed, as the landlord has been paid. If the tenant does not receive the assistance, the case may move forward, with the landlord claiming possession of the dwelling for nonpayment.
Third, as it stands currently, a landlord may not issue an eviction notice for “unauthorized occupants,” meaning that, subject to health and safety standards, a tenant may allow people not on the lease to live in the rental unit free from repercussions. The landlord may make 78 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
the guests sign a temporary occupancy agreement but may not remove them until March of 2022.
SB 608 states that once a tenant has been in a dwelling for a year, whether on a month-to-month tenancy, or a fixed term, the landlord may not terminate “without cause,” subject to a few exceptions. In other words, even if the lease has ended, the landlord may not make the tenant move out simply for that reason.
The landlord may still evict for other breaches of the tenancy, such as nonpayment of rent, or smoking in a nonsmoking unit, but the end of a rental period no longer terminates a tenancy. There are five exceptions to this: 1) the landlord intends to demolish the unit; 2) the landlord is going to perform extensive repairs that would make the dwelling unsafe; 3) the unit will be converted to a use that is not residential; 4) the landlord has sold the dwelling to a buyer who intends to occupy it as their primary residence; or 5) the landlord, or a member of their immediate family, intends to move into the unit as their primary residence. CANBY HISTORY
IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
The park preserves 567 acres including the confluence of the Willamette, Molalla and Pudding rivers, which provides an important habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, deer, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. One of the largest great blue heron rookeries in the Willamette Valley is located at Molalla River State Park. The area also offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, picnicking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing and, of course, a ride on one of the last ferries still operating in the state of Oregon.
Molalla River State Park
But how did the park come to be? It all began in May of 1971, when the Oregon Highway Commission purchased the initial 440-acre tract for the tidy sum of $260,000. Plans for the development of the park came together slowly, even as the state gradually added to its investment along the Willamette and Molalla rivers. The Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department hosted a public workshop to “gather citizens’ views on how best to develop a Molalla River State Park” at Canby High School in 1976. The project by then had grown to 534 acres of undeveloped land.

anby is known for its system of quaint community parks, from the stately Wait Park downtown (named after early resident and first-ever chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, Aaron Wait) to bustling Maple Street Park, which stays busy with everything from softball tournaments to the city’s new splash pad. But the community’s largest park isn’t owned or operated by the city at all; it’s the sprawling Molalla River State Park, which is located just north of town near the Canby Ferry, and surrounded by some of the finest farmland in the Pacific Northwest.
But plans for the park and nature preserve were nearly derailed just a few years later by a little-remembered episode that is stunning to review in hindsight. In 1979, the newly formed Metropolitan Service District (a precursor to the regional government entity now known as Metro) proposed siting a landfill on the 364-acre Mira Monte farm located within

MOLALLA RIVER STATE PARK IS SURROUNDED BY SOME OF THE FINEST FARMLAND IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.
the park lands. At the time, only two dumps accepted household garbage from the tri-county area, which generated a staggering 750,000 tons annually, and both were expected to be full within a few years. Mira Monte quickly became district officials’ leading candidate, though the proposal was ferociously opposed by local residents. “We are shocked that farmland now in production on the Pudding River flood plain would even be considered for landfill use,” biologist Bob Harris told Metro directors in June of that year. He said the proposed dump would be an environmental disaster, attracting seagulls and other birds that could pose a hazard for air traffic at the Aurora State Airport, polluting the nearby rivers and threatening the aforementioned blue heron rookery. Harris and other landfill opponents presented a petition signed by more than 1,000 Clackamas County residents insisting that Metro directors consider another site, but then-Portland City Commissioner Connie McCready pushed back hard against the protests. “Everybody wants garbage picked up, but nobody wants it dumped in their backyard,” McCready told The Oregonian.
With catastrophe averted, developers refocused their efforts on turning the area into a non-garbage-based attraction. The park became a popular stop for canoeists in the 1980s, as demonstrated by this feature in The Oregonian in 1984, which described the Pudding River as a “rich, brown stream that writhes slowly through a forested mini-wilderness thick with bird and animal life” and claimed it was named “for a tasty dish of blood pudding, not its color.” Increased use brought some hazards, however. In 1985, a canoeist who had camped out at Molalla River State Park the previous night drowned after going over Willamette Falls in Oregon City. Her partner, Bruce Herring, survived the incident and said they had been ill-informed about the area’s travails in planning their weekend river trip, telling newspapers “we had no idea we were paddling toward any kind of falls.” Picnickers and bird watchers were also soon frequenting the area, noting that blue herons, wandering deer, water animals and all varieties of fish are (CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE)
A former attorney and two-term member of the Oregon House of Representatives, McCready went on to serve a partial term as mayor of Portland when Neil Goldschmidt resigned later that year to accept an appointment as U.S. Secretary of Transportation in the Carter Administration. She served a short but eventful stint as mayor, during which the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens occured, blanketing the city in ash and eventually prompting McCready to threaten businesses with fines if they failed to remove the ash from their parking lots. These feuds with business owners and workers likely contributed to her defeat by Frank Ivancie in the 1980 election. One would think McCready’s frustrations over a disaster from the north depositing tons of unwanted material in her city would help her understand why Canbyites objected to a mountain of Portland-area garbage being, in her words, “dumped in their backyard,” but that was not the case. Still, the plans were eventually trashed when the Clackamas County Landfill Citing Advisory recommended against it. “Further consideration of the proposed Mira Monte Landfill site should be abandoned,” the 10-member committee of county officials wrote in its report, citing 23 reasons including the rookery and the danger it could present for the Aurora airport two miles away. Leaders eventually pivoted to developing the Clackamas Transfer and Recycling Center in Oregon City, which today is known as Metro South. CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 89
THE HISTORY OF MOLALLA RIVER STATE PARK ... continued
a common sight. The park’s ponds and marshy areas are also good places to see arrowhead, or wapato, a once-common aquatic plant with an edible root that Native Americans harvested. Wapato became a diet staple of Lewis and Clark during their travels in Oregon. In 1991, the park became a hotbed for sailplane enthusiasts, a type of unpowered aircraft that uses naturally occurring currents to glide through the air, even hosting contests where the best pilots competed to see who could stay aloft the longest or land the closest to the designated area. Its wide-open fields also attracted kite and remote-controlled plane flyers. War came to Molalla River State Park in 1996, though the battles were not over landfill siting this time. Instead, the Northwest Civil War Council began using the park to stage multiple-day encampments and reenactments of battles between Union and Confederate forces, featuring authentic reproductions of military uniforms and other costumes of the period. Sadly, that tradition ended in 2001 due to poor attendance. But the following year about 90 eighth-graders from Rosemont Ridge Middle School in West Linn invaded the area to pitch tents, cook over open fires and prepare for a mock battle as part of their own Civil War reenactment organized by the 79th New York State Militia, a Clackamas County-based reenactment group. In 2008, a hiker plunged an estimated 60 feet after falling off a cliff at the park. Miraculously, 24-year-old West Linn resident Nathan Steward survived the fall, using his cellphone to call 911 and initiate his own rescue after regaining consciousness. Stewart’s ribs, hip and knee were hurt, and
Life Flight carried him to OHSU in Portland. Our final story from the history of Molalla River State Park comes from 2018, when it was the hiding place in the popular annual Rose Festival Treasure Hunt — a beloved tradition from the 1980s that organizers brought back in 2014. The treasure, always a medallion encased in lucite, is hidden on public property somewhere in Multnomah, Clackamas, Clark, Washington or Yamhill counties. The lucky finders also receive a cash prize and one-night stay for two at Spirit Mountain Casino. Of course, longtime treasure hunters know the real prize is the adventure and glory of solving the complicated clues that usually require knowledge of local history and geography, and which are published by The Oregonian each day until the treasure is found. In 2018, treasure hunters Laura Hall and Jey Biddulph solved the complex series of 13 infuriatingly dense clues leading to a pile of wood chips and other debris in Molalla River State Park. To be fair, though, the pair had a bit of a head start in getting into the puzzle makers’ headspace, being puzzle makers themselves. Hall and Biddulph are co-founders of Meridian Adventure Co., a narrative escape room outfit based in Portland. With grassy fields, hiking trails, an off-leash pet exercise area, and convenient river access for boating and fishing, Molalla River State Park is a treasure in our very own backyard! Although we’re all glad to have our trash picked up, I think we can also agree that we’re immensely grateful to have this gorgeous landscape preserved in all of its natural glory.

ARTS & CULTURE
THE ARTWORK OF
JR Slattum By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer
S
ome have suggested that art is a window into the soul. Local artist and philosopher J.R. Slattum would argue that art is not a window; it’s not merely a reflection of what resides in the mind of the artist. Instead, it’s a doorway, one which accesses not only the mind of the artist but also the universal mind. Once opened, the artist is free to enter, explore, and bring back souvenirs; universal nuggets of wisdom which, with a proper commitment to the creative process, can be expressed and related to others in a visual form. J.R.’s art is just that - a visual representation of his ongoing journeys within. As quoted from his bio page, “The mind is a universe. Ideas are alive. These [referring to his paintings] are the travels.” J.R. is one of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. Incredibly thoughtful, introspective, and intellectual, he’s the kind of person whose mind never rests. You can tell that he is always thinking, contemplating some deep spiritual or philosophical conundrum, trying to work something out. But as it is in life, so it is in art. That’s his process. He told me he spends upwards of 200 hours planning a piece. It starts with a session (or multiple sessions) of doodling, streamof-consciousness type drawing, letting the doodles go where they want to go. He “listens” and pays attention without forcing it until something begins to crystalize. Inevitably, an image appears, something channeled through his subconscious, something that inspires him conceptually, and then it’s just a matter of discovering how best to represent the idea on canvas. His work is rich in tone, vibrant in color, and fascinating in concept. The pieces are not overly complex or detailed in their presentation, but they are all the more striking in their simplicity. There is warmth and depth in the imagery that stops you in your tracks. You can’t help but get sucked into his alternate universe; a universe which is simultaneously alien and all too familiar to our own. As he explains so eloquently, J.R.’s pieces are “visual philosophy,” and thankfully he has invited us all along for the journey. This is something J.R. was born to do. As a child, he loved drawing and wanted nothing more than to be an artist when he grew up. As it tends to happen with so many of us, however, he “learned”

to be more pragmatic with age, and eventually abandoned art altogether. Dark times followed. It wasn’t until he had a near-death experience of sorts that he came to realize that art was his true calling. He reprioritized and made a commitment, and he turned the darkest period of his life, what could have potentially been his end, into a triumphant return to bliss. And he made it a career in the process! Beautiful, bold, and profound, the work of J.R. Slattum sweeps you off your feet to worlds far away… but closer than you might think. Find his work online at JRSLATTUM.com or on Instagram, or come out to Portland Saturday Market and meet the man himself. Let him take you on a journey of the senses and perhaps even into the realm of self-discovery!
