Pappy’s Greasy Spoon WHERE YOU’LL BE TREATED LIKE FAMILY! by Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

ike Merrill, aka “Pappy” of Pappy’s Greasy Spoon, is known for being quite the character. He’s one of those guys who is your best friend and your favorite cook, all rolled into one jolly person. Just ask any of his loyal patrons who have been regulars at Pappy’s for years, if not decades. Even during the state mandated shutdown of restaurants, Pappy’s customers were so dedicated in their support that they set up a makeshift dining area in the parking lot. They brought their own tables and chairs to keep within social distancing guidelines, but they simply couldn’t go without patronizing their favorite local eatery; quite the endorsement of both the restaurant and the man behind it! When he was younger, Mike used to travel around with his father and his favorite eating places were the

diners and “greasy spoons” they used to stop at along the way. As he got older his love of hearty comfort food and the nostalgic feel of old diners never faded, and he eventually decided he needed to open his own place where others could enjoy those things as well. Pappy’s Greasy Spoon originally opened in 2002 inside of Canby Bowl. The moniker, a combination of a nickname his oldest son had given him and his favorite kind of food joint, proved to be catchy. That, along with the delicious and generous portions they served, helped the business take off. In 2011 the bowling alley closed and Pappy’s moved to their current location on 2nd Avenue, inside Holly Mall. The feel of this location can be described as one hundred percent “Pappy.” Full of fun decorations and memorabilia, most of which have been brought in by various patrons over the years, the atmosphere reflects the local personality in a way that you wouldn’t see much of in a bigger city. Although Mike originally hails from New Hampshire, he moved to Canby in 1993; a place he said was “just like home but without the snow.” After living here for nearly 3 decades, he’s a now considered a “local” guy, and he feels deeply connected to the Canby community. He’s seen the town support him through some of his darkest times, and he’s been happy to support others in the community in turn.

So, what about the food? Pappy’s is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday, and it is THE place to go in Canby for fresh, home-made, delicious comfort food. Biscuits and gravy (a Pappy’s favorite and a secret recipe), chicken-fried steak, home-cooked potatoes, specialty sausages, home-made soups, real milkshakes; the list goes on and on. Breakfast is their most popular meal and is served all day, but they also have fantastic burgers, sandwiches and salads for lunch - all made with the highest quality meats from local distributors that he’s worked with for 18 years. His New England Clam Chowder is a special point of pride since he’s a born New Englander, though it’s clear that he takes a lot of pride in everything he serves. This isn’t just a job for Mike; it’s a true labor of love. You’ll notice on the menu that many of the dishes are named after people (Bob’s Best,

Smitty Smasher, Ozzie’s Obsession). This is because his regulars actually helped him build the menu. Frequent and repeatedly, requested meals were named after their originators and made their way onto the permanent menu. Many of those favorite older regulars are sadly no longer with us, Pappy says, but their memory lives on through their favorite dishes. If you aren’t yet one of Pappy’s regular customers, you need to stop in soon and find out what has inspired such longevity and loyalty from his patrons. With a no-nonsense approach to making great food and the longstanding tradition of treating his customers like family, you will definitely want to come back for more. At Pappy’s they’re still willing to go off-menu and customize any dish you want (provided they have the necessary ingredients), so even you could end up memorialized on the menu! Perhaps the best way to sum up Pappy’s Greasy Spoon overall is with Pappy’s own words; “If you’re buyin’, I’m fryin’!” ■

THE BOOK OF LOST FRIENDS by Lisa Wingate This Reconstruction era historical fiction novel was one of my favorite reads of 2020 so far. Inspired by newspaper clippings from the late 1800s of families searching for lost relatives, Lisa Wingate weaves a wonderful genealogical story that arcs from the Louisiana of 1875 to the Louisiana of 1987. This is a story of family, of loss, of redemption and ultimately of hope. TEEN

CINDERELLA IS DEAD by Kaylynn Bayron This is a good book to read because it has a very uplifting story about a young black woman who tries to save her kingdom. t Ebner’s Custom Meats in downtown Canby, they pride themselves on quality work and a superior product. And you don’t have to take my word for it; just stop by sometime. They’ll show you where the sausage gets made – literally. “It’s customer service, first and foremost,” said longtime employee Keith Kreutzer, when asked to describe Ebner’s business philosophy. “With the custom cutting, you know, we recognize that we’re directly responsible for providing meals for families. So we try to do the best job that we possibly can on that.” Like any butcher shop, Ebner’s is a source of locally raised natural meat and other products. The refrigerated display cases are lined with beef, pork, poultry, goat and lamb, and their custom cutting services are a vital part of the food chain for many local family farms who raise their own beef, pork and other animals, as well as hunters. But that’s not all they’re known for. Their sandwiches border on legendary, almost as much for their size as anything else. “They’re not for the faint of heart,” Kreutzer said with a laugh. “But that’s how it should be. A sandwich should be like this,” he added, holding up his hands about a foot apart, as if gripping a huge, invisible sandwich. “You should have to struggle to get it in your mouth.” They’re also known for their award-winning jerky, which has an entire case on one side of the shop dedicated to it. Every piece is sliced by hand and carefully smoked to perfection. It’s an intensive process, but it’s worth it. “It’s time-consuming, but when you do it right, it’s unbeatable,” Kreutzer said.

Ebner’s owner and founder Mike Ebner knows meat — he’s been in the business his entire life. His grandfather bought the Mt. Angel Meat Co. in 1940 and ran it for many years until his son (Mike’s father) took it over. Mike himself grew up in the business and learned every aspect of the industry, along with the joys of a tried and true family-run operation. He and his wife Amy purchased the meat shop in Canby (formerly known as Fisher’s Meats) in 2011 and quickly put their own spin on things. One thing they especially enjoy is bringing humor into their work. “We try to be a little playful with things,” Kreutzer says. “If you can’t show up and have a good time, is it even worth showing up?” This mentality can really be seen in the company’s alternate logo, which depicts mascots Patty (a purple cow), Hamlet (a yellow pig) and Scruffy (a green goat) from the rear, with blue ribbons tacked to their ample posteriors. The tagline reads, “Leaving the competition behind.” In recent years, Ebner’s has focused on “beefing” up its smoked meat services, which it offers for events, catering and deli sales. They have twin 27-foot-long, wood-fired barbecue pits, and another 16-footer, which produces fall-off-the-bone ribs, mouth-watering brisket, and just about anything else Mike can get his tongs and spatula on. “I think ‘doing things right’ would be a good way to sum it up,” Kreutzer said. “We’re just a small, family-run business, trying to be known as the best at what we do. And it’s a dying art! Exercise To Combat Stress

don’t know about you, but the last 4 months have done a number on my stress level. I’m a pretty calm person by nature, but I also like to be in control of things. Control? Yea, that went out the window in a hurry. With that, some crazy stress hit. As a fitness professional I know my best weapon against stress is exercise. And, I also know that sometimes stress can feel so overwhelming that being active sounds impossible. Because of that, I’d like to share a few tips to make sure that you get in some of that much-needed stress reducing exercise.

Schedule Physical Activity: It is easy to let the day get away from you and completely forget to make time to move. I highly recommend you schedule time for exercise, regardless of what you do. My schedule is different every day, so I have to look at my schedule for the week and plan when I will fit in my exercise. Some days it’s at lunchtime, other days it is first thing in the morning, and sometimes it may be at the end of my day. I have to do what works for my schedule, so that means planning ahead and putting it on the schedule. There is no “best time” to exercise. Just make it happen.

Don’t Let Stress Win: I know that if I get out for a run, a bike ride, or get in a workout of some kind my brain will start releasing some much-needed endorphins, the “feel-good” neurotransmitters produced during exercise. Let that thought help motivate you to get moving. Remember: exercise combats stress. Move more to stress less!

Find Joy In Movement: OK, I know that may sound strange, but if you find a form of exercise you enjoy, you will be more likely to do it and that will help lighten your stress load. Not sure what you enjoy? Try a variety of things. You may not enjoy it right away, but give it a chance. You’ll get there. You’ll find what you love – or at least something you don’t hate.

Just Do Something: Stress can lead to feelings of depression that can be overwhelming. I get that! Sometimes I can’t convince myself to do anything strenuous. When your stress level is too high, your body can react negatively to strenuous activity – treating it like additional stress. If that is the case, do something low-key, but physical. I will opt for something like an easy walk or doing some basic movements and stretching. There are no right or wrong exercises to do. Just do something that involves movement. Moving your body will help your mind.

If you haven’t been active lately, just the thought of exercise might be stressful initially. Start out slow and gradually increase your pace, time, resistance level, or distance. Expect exercise to challenge you. Your heart rate will increase and your breathing will be heavy. That’s supposed to happen. Embrace that. It’s all a part of improving your physical and mental health, and letting your body fight stress naturally.

Meet Kayla, one of our wonderful CSM instructors! She began playing violin and viola at the age of eight. She went on to play with the Portland Youth Philharmonic and has performed with several honors orchestras and choirs. She studied at George Fox University with a focus in Music and Psychology and believes that it was her performance opportunities there that opened doors to other aspects of music like songwriting, arranging, recording, and teaching. Since then, she has recorded 3 full-length albums and has toured with her band as well as recording with other up-and-coming Portland acts.

ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR 2020: TERESA SASSE Rotarian Teresa Sasse is a chocolatier and business owner of Puddin' River Chocolates and Confections in Canby. Teresa is an enthusiastic Rotarian who joined the club in April 2006. She is an active participant in the community through Canby Area Chamber of Commerce, Clackamas County 4-H swine project, Canby High School Booster Club, and Canby Rotary. She is a leader who brings dedication and hard work to her business and to everything she does in the community. Teresa is President of the Rotary Club of Canby in 2020-2021. She volunteers by leading the literacy program which provides funds for library books for Canby Public Schools, annual support for Canby Public Library, and the Reading Rotarian program in local elementary schools. She is the organizer of the annual "Nothing-But-Net" basketball tournament sponsor dinner and game day BBQ lunch. She works on the Kiwanis holiday food and toy collection, backpack buddies, Postal Carriers food drive, and Canby High School graduation party. She has demonstrated sustained commitment to her family, profession, and in our community. Teresa's outstanding record of service earned her the Rotarian of the Year award in 2020. CANBY ROTARY TAKES ACTION

Rotarians Are People of Action Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today's most pressing challenges. First Step Grants is a partnership with the Rotary Club of Canby and The First Step Grant Foundation. The program offers vocational grants of up to $3,000 to qualified applicants to be used for tuition payments or direct expenses relating from a short-term course of study, in some cases, payment for learning materials such as books and supplies may be considered. The goal of the First Step Grant program is to allow recipients to receive training and education that will result in a direct increase in their hourly pay after completing the vocational training or education. The most recent First Step Grants are helping a young woman qualify to apply to nursing school and a student pay tuition to become a farrier. The focus is to assist with acquiring skills that will result in a better paying job. Community service is central to the Rotary motto of Service Above Self which means unselfish volunteer service.

Rotarian Golfers Raise $1,000 to Help Kids Canby Rotarians and friends played golf on May 29 with a goal of having fun while raising at least $1,000 toward the effort to immunize children against the polio virus. The cost of a dose of the polio vaccine is about $1 delivered by volunteers. The fourteen golfers played and observed restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Canby Rotarians have raised more than $50,000 to eradicate polio since 1985. Rotarians and their worldwide partners have worked to eradicate the disease of polio since 1985. In fact, since starting this campaign, polio has decreased by 99.9 percent. Only three countries continue to record lowlevel transmission of the wild polio virus including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. Rotary's vision is â€œto immunize all of the world's children against polio".

“Where flowers bloom, so does hope,” a wise First Lady once said,

and that’s certainly true at Hulbert’s Flowers in the heart of Canby, where three generations of Hulberts have built a legacy that spans more than 72 years. Driven by their lifelong love of flowers, along with their desire to operate their own business and create a home for their children, Ralph and Mildred Hulbert — veteran laborers from the shipyards during World War II — purchased the tiny Canby Flower Shop in December of 1947. “They lived in the Hubbard area and owned a farm,” explained their granddaughter Jill Peters, who manages the shop today. “He liked being a farmer, but she would drive past this little building all the time, going to sell flowers up to market in Portland.” The shop was part of Canby founder Philander Lee’s original donation land claim, and at that time, was the only privately owned property alongside the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. The Hulberts were able to purchase the building for the tidy sum of $16,900 paid for over two years. It became Hulbert’s Flowers, and quickly began to grow in every way. It had to. While the tiny shop and apartment had provided plenty of room for the previous owner, the Hulberts were a growing family and necessitated the expansion of the building, including a showroom style shop. Two small greenhouses also came with the business, and they were soon full of fuchsias, Martha Washington geraniums and begonias the Hulberts grew for retail sale. They also raised cut flowers for their own use on the south end of the property. The shop continued to grow and prosper, with another expansion in 1960. In 1980 Ralph Hulbert sold the business to his daughter and son-in-law, Nola and Curt Hovland, who still own it to this day. Jill grew up with the family business, and said it has been interesting running a flower shop in a town known as “The Garden Spot.” She explains that in the past, some people were more reluctant to pay for blooms they could raise themselves, but that mentality has lessened as Canby has grown, yards have become smaller, and fewer people maintain gardens these days. Of course, the internet has made its mark on the flower business, and Hulbert’s has adapted with the times. They offer a full-service website, hulbertsflowers.net, with same-day local delivery included. The store strives to provide only the freshest quality flowers and plants, as well as a unique selection of gift items in a friendly, family atmosphere. They offer floral arrangements for all occasions and all phases of life, whether it be a wedding, new baby, a funeral, or just needing to brighten someone’s day. Ralph and Mildred Hulbert founded their shop on the basic principles of outstanding customer service, quality products, and unique distinctive floral designs — all with a “we can do it” attitude, and those values and lessons have been passed on to each generation, making for a true home-grown Canby legacy. ■ 38 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

eet Dr. Scott Ferguson, the Canby Clinic’s newest naturopathic physician, who joined the practice on May 1.

Dr. Ferguson is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, who said he had “very early ambitions” to go into the medical field. He attended medical school at The National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, then completed his two-year residency in Australia. It was his abiding interest in the study of genetics that took him Down Under prior to medical school, and the experience exposed him to different philosophies of care and a deeper understanding of naturopathic and preventative medicine. “My ambition was to be a holistic pediatrician,” he said. “I wanted to focus on more preventative therapies such as diet and nutrition, and the more cutting-edge genetic treatments that were on the horizon.” During a medical career that has spanned more than 25 years, Dr. Ferguson has been active in private practice, education and consulting. He has published several books in the areas of natural medicine and diagnostic interpretation, and given lectures across the globe. One of his specialties is functional medicine, also known as integrative medicine. “It’s the best of both worlds.” he says. “Science and nature. That’s where I see the future of medicine going.” For much of the past two decades, he has been based in private practice in the Happy Valley area, but he moved to Sherwood last year. Before joining the Canby Clinic, Dr. Ferguson was working in laboratory medicine for a biopharmaceutical company with locations in Oregon (and around the world). The company specializes in manufacturing plasma-derived and recombinant therapeutic products, and has joined other leading companies in a global effort to develop “CoVIg-19,” a potential plasma-derived therapy for treating those with serious complications from the novel coronavirus. Dr. Ferguson was on a state task force that was leading Oregon’s effort in that regard, which was chiefly tasked with isolating antibodies from COVID-19 patients for further study.

“The primary focus is on isolating antibodies from convalescent plasma, from patients that have had exposure,” Dr. Ferguson explained. “That’s where a lot of the energy and focus is right now: trying to develop biological therapies, as opposed to, say, a vaccination that could take a year or more to properly isolate and test.” Dr. Ferguson said the state of primary care led him to return to a role where he was able to interact with patients more directly. Personal responsibility, prevention and empowerment are the cornerstones of his philosophy for care and healthy living. ongtime residents will know how rich and important the Canby area’s agricultural resources have been to its history and, well, growth. Even before settlers arrived on the scene, the area attracted nomadic peoples on their annual pilgrimages because of the bounty of wild berries. Other tribes settled down and farmed the rich soils that were deposited here by ancient tribes. Throughout its history, Canby has been associated with farming, so it’s little wonder that a top-notch farmers market has been considered essential by Canbyites. Though the Canby Farmers Market has been around for years, it has struggled at times to attract vendors and visitors alike. It wasn’t until this summer that the market appeared to have truly hit its stride, under the steady hand of Alexis Purcell, who is in her second year organizing

the downtown market. This year, the market expanded its footprint to two streets and has been setting new attendance records on almost a weekly basis. “Lots and lots of hard work,” Purcell said with a laugh, when asked what has helped the market grow and find its footing this year. “Just endless hours of work.” It has sometimes been a challenge, she admits, but it has been worth it to pull together the support of the community and other local community farmers markets that have banded together to help one another. “I really wanted to make it bigger and better,” she said. “Canby has such great potential with it being a smaller, farm-based community. We should have a really great farmers market. I’ve always just liked that picture of the local farmers bringing their produce to market each week and offering it to the locals.”

We’re just going to keep going strong, keep following the requirements and, hopefully, add in some fun things as we get further down the road a little bit.” The market has changed locations several times over the years, but appears to have found a permanent home on North Holly Street between 2nd and 4th avenues – next to Gwynn’s Coffeehouse and Wait Park. “I think it’s a good location,” she said. “We love Gwynn’s, love what they do for the community. And for families, you can grab coffee, check out the market and then

head to the park. It’s all right there. You can’t beat that.” The Canby Farmers Market features a rotating list of vendors offering a wide variety of locally grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, honey, jams and preserves, baked goods, crafts, art, jewelry and more. Food trucks, including Kona Ice, Killer Burger and Chop Chop Chicken Sundaes are among the regular attendees. Other local farms, food producers and vendors you are likely to spot there include Red Chair Farms, Dynamite Pico, Heaven Scent Nursery, The Clean Bee, Lux Sucre Desserts, Claudia’s Tamales, Beathan Farms, Parsons Farms, Over the Moon Farms, The Blue-Eyed Artist, Ava’s Eco Delivery Service and many others. THE HISTORY OF THE

t’s been the highlight of every August in Clackamas County for over a century! Well, every August except for this one. I’m talking, of course, about the Clackamas County Fair; the crown jewel of the area’s summer events calendar; a source of fun, nostalgia, fond memories, and perhaps even a regret or two the next time you step on the bathroom scale. Sadly, this will be a year without all of those things, but it’s also a wonderful time to look back on the legacy of this cherished event. Before there were the mind-and-tastebud-bending configurations of the fair food court, before the bright lights and screams of the midway, there was simply the Clackamas County Fair in its original form. In its earliest days it consisted of not much more than a few prize hogs, some vegetables and pies, and the chance to celebrate a summer of labor well spent.

Though the fair has been associated with the town of Canby seemingly since the beginning of time, residents may be surprised to learn that the first fair was actually held in Gladstone. The city’s Chautauqua Park had the honor of hosting the first-ever Clackamas County Fair on Oct. 10th, 11th and 12th in 1907. By all accounts, it was a smashing success. The board of directors engaged Nat Reiss and his touring one-ring circus to put on a show for the ages, one that included a mirror maze, a premature baby in an incubator (believe it or not, it was a common attraction in those days), and “many other things familiar to patrons of carnivals and street fairs,” according to The Oregonian. Nearly 5,000 people — described by reporters as “a merry, jostling crowd” — attended the first fair. Oregon City, Canby and other communities closed businesses early and crowded into whatever automobiles they could

find that were headed up to Gladstone. The produce, livestock and other exhibits that were submitted for judging drew rave reviews, with O.E. Freytag of Fern Ridge Farm earning the most bragging rights, as he took home no fewer than 34 blue ribbons for his vegetables. “It has been my good fortune,” said United States Senator Charles William Fulton in an address to county fairgoers, “to have visited nearly every section of the state during the last few months ... and it really does one’s heart good to see these splendid products of the soil. You have a fair here that a few years ago would have been considered great for the State Fair, and Clackamas County is certainly to be congratulated.” The Nat Reiss shows concluded with a slam-bang finish: their ever-popular Mardi Gras and Masque Carnival. The gates were open till dark to welcome all to a “confetti battle royal” and tour the blaze of lights along the midway.

It didn’t take long (less than two weeks, in fact) for the city of Canby to have designs on bringing the Clackamas County Fair into its borders. At a meeting of Canby citizens on October 22nd of that year, it was “decided to endeavor to have the permanent location of this exposition held at Canby.” According to newspapers of the day, it was further decided that “Canby could provide the accommodations needed and raise all funds necessary for the successful conduct of the fair, and committees were appointed to arrange the matter.” They already had a spot picked out: more than 40 acres were available on what is now 4th Avenue east of town, on land once owned by Supreme Court Justice Aaron E. Wait and still held by his descendants. It took almost a year for the Canby Development League and its 24 citizen members, led by R.S. Coe, to get things “arranged,” (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)

CLACKAMAS FAIR ... continued but they were ultimately successful in bringing the fair to its permanent home in 1908, in what would soon be forever established as the Clackamas County Fairgrounds.

The popularity of the fair has never waned, and in 2014 it was honored as a Oregon Heritage Tradition. The fairgrounds themselves have been continuously updated throughout the decades, and are a popular venue for hosting events year-round. As we wait patiently for the time to come when we can again enjoy this spectacular event, let’s hold on to the wonderful memories it has given us in the past, and be thankful for the tremendous impact it has had on our community for over 100 years.

Groundbreaking was held in late July of that year, the Canby Tribune records, to begin construction on the fairgrounds’ buildings and a first-class race track. Arriving at the grounds on that Monday, July 20, the party halted under the cool shades of drooping firs and could not help but make remarks on the momentous occasion. “Judge Dimick, as did all the other speakers, advised the people of Canby to do all in their power to make the fair a success by talking and working for the enterprise in season and out of season,” the Tribune said. “He told the wonderful advantages to the county such an institution would be, and how it could be made a success or a failure.” A fair association operated the fair for some years until the county acquired responsibility, some 80 years ago. During the time the fair was privately run, many local citizens were instrumental in making the fair successful. Carl Joehnke, who served as secretary of the fair for years, and H.C. Kanne were two of the most prominent fair boosters.

Tucker Hunter by Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

anby High School alum Tucker Hunter has seen more than his share of success in the world of competitive cheer, including three ICU gold medals for Team USA, three NCAA national championships and several other world titles - and all before turning 30! But his career was raised to new heights this summer with a dazzling debut on America’s Got Talent that had celebrity judges Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Howie Mandel and even Simon Cowell, well, cheering. Tucker is the son of former Canby Cougar baseball coach Marty Hunter and former Canby cheer coach Kim Hunter, who passed away in 2015 from ovarian cancer. Tucker graduated from CHS in 2010 and then studied at Oklahoma State University, graduating in 2014. The AGT segment featured Tucker and his All Star Cheer team, the CA Wildcats based out of the Cheer Athletics gym in his new hometown of Plano, Texas. Tucker has been part of several highly successful competitive cheer teams at the Cheer America gym since moving to Texas four or five years ago. The teams form in the fall and

compete throughout the winter and spring, ultimately culminating with the national championships at Disney World in April, which was unfortunately canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Filmed in March, the America’s Got Talent audition was actually one of the last performances the Wildcats were able to put on, and (again because of Covid-19) it happened with no live audience besides host Terry Crews and the panel of celebrity judges. The Governor of California, where AGT is filmed, had just issued the order that week prohibiting gatherings of more than 100 people. “We didn’t know there wasn’t going to be an audience until we got there,” said Tucker. “It was not really what we were used to, because whenever you’re competing in a cheer competition, you’re used to there being a big crowd. And you can kind of rely on the crowd to let you know how your routine is going.” The routine - which the Wildcats had been perfecting since November, but tweaked slightly for AGT because of the smaller stage space and different personnel - wowed the judges, all four of whom voted them on to the next round. “It was very cool to hear all the positive comments they had,” the former Canby resident recalled. “Most people aren’t super familiar with All Star Cheerleading until you see it live, so I think they were kind of surprised. It was neat to get their feedback.”

They even got kind words from the notoriously prickly Simon Cowell. “Yeah — he was nice to us,” Tucker said with a laugh. “We didn’t get to watch any of the other auditions, so I’m not sure if he was rude to them, like I guess he’s more known for, but with us, he was very positive.”

or football. “There’s a lot more to cheerleading than most people assume,” he said. “When I say, ‘I do cheerleading,’ they assume I just stand on the sidelines and pump my arms. It was cool to show a different side of this thing that I’ve done for a large portion of my life.”

The Wildcats’ routine featured a dazzling array of acrobatics, flips, and cheerleaders being casually tossed to the height of the America’s Got Talent sign. It looks effortless, and it’s supposed to. “I think it’s pretty similar to gymnastics when you watch the Olympics,” Tucker said. “It looks so easy, but that’s because no one sees all the trial and error and the amount of repetition it takes to get it to that point.”

Tucker has heard from many of his former friends and neighbors in Canby since the AGT segment aired, and he said it has been cool to see how much excitement and interest it has generated. Though he could not disclose the happenings of future episodes, he did confirm that the Wildcats’ story is not done yet.

During the team’s interviews on the show, in which Tucker was among those prominently featured, the Wildcats drove home the message that cheerleading is a true sport on its own merits — not mere window dressing for more mainstream competitive sports like basketball

“I don’t know how much I’m allowed to share, but there are more rounds coming,” he said. “We have not gone back yet to film more, but hopefully we will soon. There’s been a bit of a delay because of everything that’s happening right now.” Whatever happens, though, it’s clear that Tucker and the Wildcats will certainly have all of Canby cheering them on to victory! ■
