TASTE OF TOWN Nuevo Vallarta
alking through the doors at Nuevo Vallarta, located at the Canby Market Center you’ll feel like you’re on a vacation in Mexico! With friendly staff and delicious, fresh, flavorful food made with all the best ingredients, you won’t want to miss out. You will be greeted at your table by a smiling server, and in standard fashion you'll get a fresh basket of warm tortilla chips and their delicious house-made salsa. Nuevo Vallarta has classic dishes ranging from an assortment of nachos with your choice of meats, enchiladas, burritos, and much more! A great option is their mouthwatering chicken taquitos that are deep fried in a flour tortilla filled with fresh tasty chicken and melted cheese, topped with lettuce and garnished with sour cream and guacamole. For a more unique experience try the Caldo 7 Mares, a hot and rich soup made with crab legs, tiger shrimp, scallops, clams, fish, and vegetables. If you still have room after all that, then don’t miss out on the scrumptious desserts like the Flan, a vanilla custard with a sugar topping. Yum! If that is too rich, try the Sopapillas which are deep fried, crispy dessert tortilla chips topped with honey and cinnamon, or if you're celebrating an Autumn birthday, the Chimichanga De Manzana is perfect! It's an apple, cinnamon and spice-stuffed flour tortilla, lightly fried and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with strawberry sauce and whipped cream. For their thirsty patrons there is a wide selection of beer to choose from, and lots of specialty drinks and cocktails, 12 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

such as margaritas, of course! For those who are underage or choose not to imbibe, the non-alcoholic drink selection is excellent as well. Nuevo Vallarta is the place to go when you want delicious food and a nice atmosphere, even if you may be on a tight schedule. After visiting this restaurant, you will definitely want to come back for more food and fun with friends and family!

WHERE DECLARE THEIR UNDYING LOVE
BY TYLER FRANKE
F
all is in the air. And in Canby, no fall could be complete without a trip to the one and only Fir Point Farms.
Fir Point owners Jack and Jessica Romaine bought the farm in 2012. They were looking for a new adventure after 15 years of steadily building Country Grains, their Wilsonville-based scratch bakery and deli, into a thriving business. Jessica admits that back then, they really didn’t know that much about farming. “When we started, I didn't even really know what a Gravenstein apple was,” she said. “We had to go through the school of hard knocks. We learned a lot.”
16 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
With the farm, the Romaines have the ability to grow and source their own ingredients, including the hard red wheat they use in all their breads and, you know, the sweeter stuff. “We have thousands of beehives on our property, and that’s the honey we use,” she said. “It’s 100 percent raw, pure honey, so you’re getting the best of the best.” Although Fir Point is open year-round and participates in other seasonal celebrations and events throughout the year, Jessica admits that it's their annual Harvest Festival each October that the place is most known for.
days are behind them, an ever-popular beer garden. The Romaines like to add something new each year. This year, it’s a kids zone — featuring bouncy “horses,” John Deere trykes, cow roping and a hay pile roughly the size of an average single-family home — and pumpkin bowling. What is pumpkin bowling? I mean, basically, exactly what it sounds like. “It’s set up just like a bowling alley. The only difference is instead of a bowling ball, you roll a pumpkin.”
"The Harvest Festival, everybody looks forward to it," she says. “And it makes sense, it’s been around for so long. Fir Point was actually one of the first and only pumpkin patches in the area.” Every weekend in October, Fir Point becomes a sprawling fall wonderland for kids of all ages. All the classic activities are on display: pumpkin patch (with over 3,000 pumpkins to choose from), a 6-acre corn maze, cow train, hay rides, petting zoo, etc. Plus, a bunch of other stuff you may or may not have ever thought of: bouncy houses, paintball, the "nut house," gigantic slides, and one of the few bonafide nature trails in the local area. Their fresh baked apple cider doughnuts alone are worth the price of admission (which is free, but you get what I'm trying to say). They offer a local food court, serve the best ice cream in town and, for those whose cow train
Well, there is one other difference: The lanes are made of hay bales, which is unlike most bowling alleys I’ve visited. If you can’t tell, Jessica really likes the Harvest Festival “I love fall,” she says. “Fall’s my favorite time of year. It brings families together, it’s the start of the holidays for everybody.” Her favorite part? The people. “I love our customers. I love the happy faces. I love watching little ones pick up pumpkins bigger than themselves.” Fir Point Farms is located at 14601 Arndt Road in Aurora. Admission and parking are free; individual activities are $3-$5, but the best deal is to get an unlimited wristband for $15. For more information, visit firpointfarms.com.

PAINTING PASSION
Happy Art Ceramic Studio by Courtney Smith | photos by Carly Carpenter
Are you looking for a hands-on, creativity-inspiring, family-friendly activity that everyone can enjoy this fall? Look no further than the Happy Art Ceramic Studio, located in the Wilsonville Town Center shopping complex. Owner Tracy Bischoff says the goal is “to give my customers a place to come in, relax, paint with their friends, family, or by themselves and feel free to create their style of art.” She recollects on her 25 year career in childcare, and her passion for all varieties of artistic creation: “I have always enjoyed art of all kinds, crafts, jewelry, gardening, quilts... however painting has always been therapeutic for me, and my daughter and I would always call it our Happy Place.” Ceramic painting is an art form that is especially close to Tracy’s heart: “My mother was an amazing artist, and I still have the ceramic nativity scene she painted the year I was born. I now sell the same set, which is a wonderful tribute to her and her legacy.” Tracy says that much consideration went into the decision to open a studio. The goal was to be accessible to as many customers as possible, and the prime location just off I5 allows them to serve customers all around the area, from Oregon City and Lake Oswego, to Newberg and Canby. “I have always loved the family feel I’ve gotten when in town,” Tracy says. “I felt a warm greeting from everyone who stepped into my studio as soon as it opened. Everyone was so excited to have a ceramic shop in the town. I have so many regular customers, of all ages, and several of them consider it their Happy Place now, which warms my heart beyond words.” Happy Art makes it a priority to give back to the community by sponsoring as many school events as they can. They offer a

Tracy Bischoff discount for all educational field trips such as Girl & Boy Scouts, homeschool groups, preschool and grade school field trips, etc. Every Tuesday and Thursday are senior discount days, and they have been part of the “Fun in the Park” event every August, where kids can paint for free. Happy Art Ceramics celebrated their 3rd anniversary in September. If you haven’t yet stopped in to indulge your creative side, now’s the time! No need for experience or to bring your own supplies; everything is provided and included in the price. The studio offers Walk-in painting anytime, as well as hosting events for birthday parties, baby and bridal showers, work and team-building events, children’s classes and summer camps, and more. They also feature several seasonal event nights throughout the year, such as “Harry Potter Night,” “Christmas Ornament Night,” “Daddy-Daughter Paint Night,” and adult oriented “Sip & Paint” nights. TIPS TO CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN By Courtney Smith elieve it or not, everyone can be an artist when it comes to pumpkin carving, but it is harder than it looks. Theses 11 tips will have your gourds looking and smelling good the entire trick-or-treating season.
B
4. Scoop out all the pulp (and then some).
1. Start with the right pumpkin.
5. Sketch out your design on paper first.
Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve.
You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine. Thin the inner wall of the “face” area to 1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.
2. Cut from the bottom, not the top.
Draw your art to size then tape it to the front of your pumpkin and use a fork or pencil to poke holes along the lines you want to carve.
3. If you do carve from the top, cut out the lid on an angle.
It’s easier to create features when the face is gazing up at you. It is suggested to use a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife for carving.
Cutting your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.
This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it, like it would with a straight upand-down cut. A boning knife should work well for this.
6. Try holding the pumpkin in your lap.
7. Start by making simple rough cuts.
If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later.
20 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
8. Use your scraps creatively.
Make a tongue, pipe, or hair accessories out of a discarded piece of pumpkin shell, for example.
9. Keep your pumpkin fresh.
Spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, you can revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.
10. Create a chimney.
First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns. Then make a small hole where the lid has blackened. Or, save yourself the stress and go with battery-operated votive instead.
11. Sprinkle cinnamon inside the lid. That way, when you light the candle, your jacko’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. Yum.

Chelsea’s Closet is not only a bright spot during this stressful time – it is a therapeutic, joyful activity, which helps heal both child and parent during the most difficult times. Watching their bright red mobile costume closet wheel down the hospital hall is energizing for patients, family, and staff alike… knowing that the dreary hospital stay is about to change. Chelsea’s Closet works to transform lives of children and families facing serious illness by including therapeutic dress-up and play with their hospital experience.
The Tigard-based not-for-profit organization offers hospitalized children and their siblings the chance to select a costume and accessories from its mobile costume closet. The program supports treatment and recovery by providing therapeutic play to more than 2,400 seriously ill children annually in local hospitals, serving all 36 counties in Oregon as well as Southwest Washington. “Because of my daughter’s illness, I know first-hand the horrors of watching a child go through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery only to see it dampen their spirits and change their body,” says Alison Hicks, Chelsea’s Closet Co-Founder and CEO. “Remembering that they are children before they are patients, Chelsea’s Closet empowers them to be anything they want to be transforming them with costumes, play, and imagination into the Superhero or Princess to combat their disease.” These children are fighters, but chemo and hospital stays can bring even the toughest kid down. But as Shannon puts it, “It took Danielle away from the reality of getting chemo pumped into her… It took her to a new place where she could be safe. It’s not just a costume, it’s life-changing.”

ART & CULTURE
Sheryl Masek
Elements of Art written by Tyler Franke | photos by Aaron Hewitt
S
heryl Masek has been obsessed with color and design since she was a little girl. “If you want to go all the way back, I have always been into art and color,” she says. “Even in elementary school, I would take summer classes doing painting and all kinds of stuff like that.” Her love of art followed her as she grew up. “In high school, and then college, I took every single art class that I could feasibly fit into my schedule,” she says. Creative expression was the one constant for Sheryl, as she experimented with a wide variety of mediums, from paint to ceramics. But finding her niche as an artist, particularly commercially, was not easy. “It’s tough being an artist and making money,” she says with a laugh. “There’s a reason why the term ‘starving artist’ exists.” She spent 10-15 years as a veterinary technician and also owned a retail business in Canby for a number of years. Everything changed one day when she was browsing YouTube and found a series on fluid acrylic pouring. “I started watching it and it just fascinated me,” she said. “The thing I love about it is, you don’t have to have a formal education. You don’t have to know how to draw a perfect human figure. It’s very freeing. There’s no right or wrong.”
Fluid pouring is an abstract art technique that also involves some knowledge of chemistry and physics. In basic terms, it involves pouring a very liquified form of acrylic paint on a canvas or wood surface and letting the colors flow, move and settle organically. The artist also creates series of circular distortions in the paint, called “cells,” because that’s exactly what they look like. Over the past few years, Sheryl has developed her own paint recipe and several techniques to create unique “cells” that have become something of a calling card for her studio, Cerebral Artworks. “I try to make something that is pleasing to the eye, where it’s not just a hodgepodge of too many colors thrown on,” she said. “I try to add in some elements that kind of breaks up the color as well.” For more information, visit cerebralartworks.com.

WILLAMETTE VALLEY WINE TIME
Thinking Outside The Barrel

nspired by their love of wine and vineyards around the world, the passion of Carole and Karl Dinger created Terra Vina Vineyards, a small family-owned winery located on Parrett Mountain in the Chehalem Mountains. This winery doesn’t produce the average wine that can be bought in stores; each bottle is made with love and has a story tied to it. Terra Vina wines only makes 1200 – 1800 cases a year when bottled. The story began in 1985 when, after a tragic head on collision accident, the couple decided to quit their jobs and live life to the fullest. Carole and Karl booked their tickets to Italy, and happened to visit a trade show with home wine-making equipment. There they
Each year after that, the Dinger’s traveled all over Oregon to ‘you pick’ locations ranging from Sherwood, Eugene, Roseburg, and anywhere else they could find grapes for sale to make wines of different varieties. Their passion led them to create a wide variety of wines and then enter them into contests at the state fair. One year there was too much wine, so the family invited friends over for a party. At this time homemade wine had a bad reputation so the expectations were low, but much to everyone’s surprise it was thoroughly enjoyable and a tradition had begun. The following year, Karl and Carole were given the opportunity to do a custom crush which allowed them to produce their first commercial wine with a 2004 Vintage. Terra Vina Vineyards has a very unique harvest season. Most vineyards are known for harvesting earlier because it makes their product have higher acidity levels which ages longer. Terra Vina lets their grapes hang longer than most, and are one of the last vineyards to bring their grapes in. While most people start harvesting their vineyards in mid-September to the middle of October, Terra Vina grapes may be harvested as late as October 31st – only the rains would make them harvest early. “We don’t believe in aging wine; we believe in drinking wine” says Carole. They love fully mature fruit, with the flavor strong enough to come through. Terra Vina wines have a higher sugar content which translates into higher alcohol levels, but because of the care of their grapes, the fruit flavor is most prominent.
realized that whatever Italians grow, they produce, and as Italians they should be able to do it too! Both of their grandparents made wine, and they could too! It all started as a hobby to make their own wine, and from that became passion beyond what they could imagine. The first wine that Karl made was blackberry wine, knowing that the grapes they planted wouldn’t be ready until the following spring. The Dinger’s started to dabble with their neighbor’s left over grapes, creating a Dolcetto which is a dark fruity wine with low acidity. The neighbor was unable crush the grapes for them, so they had to go to plan B – having their young daughter Roxanne stomp the grapes in a new food grade trashcan. Now, several years later, Roxanne is helping her parents carry on the unique traditions of Terra Vina. Karl, a completely self-taught winemaker, loves and concentrates on the big reds; the Dinger’s first four wines were a Bordeaux blend, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Cabernet Franc. 26 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Terra Vina Vineyard holds events throughout the year, including monthly dinners in their field (prepared by Roxanne’s husband, chef Drew), special tasting events at the vineyard on the second Saturday of every month from June thru November, and the grounds are available to be rented too. This vineyard is known for welcoming everyone in with a family feel, and is open for every holiday except for the 4th of July. There are 2 tasting room locations: one at the vineyard about 15 minutes North West of Canby, and a formal tasting room in downtown McMinnville, which offers tastings, wine by the glass and small plates. The vineyard offers an amazing wine club package as well, and you can find more information on their website: terravinawines.com. If you’re new to drinking wine, there is no reason to be intimidated. According to Carole, “There are two types of wine, ones you like and ones you don’t like. I would suggest not judging it on the first taste, let your taste buds adjust and take in the flavors.” Inspired by the world, and created with love, Terra Vina is a winery that you won’t want to miss out on.

FALL HOME MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST 1. Care for trees and shrubs. If you have trees on your property, consider hiring an arborist to care for them — these pros can spot signs of poor health early on to prevent tree loss, and know how to prune properly to avoid falling limbs in winter storms. 2. Rake leaves. Leaves look beautiful blanketing the ground, but leaving too many leaves on a lawn over winter in a snowy area can inhibit spring growth. To make the job easier, choose a lightweight rake, wear gloves to protect your hands and use handheld “leaf scoops” to bag leaves quickly. 3. Clean gutters and downspouts. Once most of the leaves have fallen, clean out gutters and downspouts (hire a helper if you are not comfortable on a ladder). Clogged gutters during rainstorms can cause water to pool and damage your roof or siding. 4. Make exterior repairs. Take a walk around your property, looking for signs of damage to the roof, siding and foundation. If you spot anything that needs repair, schedule it before winter weather hits. 5. Seal gaps where critters could enter. Mice need only a tiny gap to be able to sneak into your house and raid your pantry — and with colder weather coming, all of the little critters out there will be looking for warm places to make a home. Fill small holes and cover any larger gaps securely with heavy-duty hardware cloth to keep the wildlife outdoors. 6. Check walkways, railings, stairs and the driveway for winter safety. When the landscape is covered in ice and snow, just walking from the driveway to the front door can be quite a challenge. Make navigating around your home safer by checking that all stairs are in good shape and have sturdy railings, and that the driveway is in good repair to make for easier shoveling.
7. Stock up on winter supplies. If you live in a region with cold, snowy winters, fall is the time to prepare. • Check the condition of snow shovels and ice scrapers; replace as needed • Pick up a bag of pet- and plant-safe ice melt, if needed • Restock emergency kits for car and home • If you use a snow blower, have it serviced and purchase fuel 8. Shut off exterior faucets and store hoses. Protect your pipes from freezing temperatures by shutting off water to exterior faucets before the weather dips below freezing. Drain hoses and store them indoors. 9. Add weatherstripping. Weatherstripping applied around the frames of windows and doors helps boost winter warmth and cut energy costs. Add door sweeps to the base of drafty doors to keep heat in and cold air out. 10. Check safety devices. • Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors; replace batteries as needed. • Check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher and replace if needed. • If you haven’t checked your home for radon, fall is a good time to do so — as the weather gets cooler and windows stay shut more often, radon is more likely to become trapped in your home. • Radon at high enough levels is extremely harmful, so if you find that your home has radon (a radon level of 4 or above is considered unacceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency), hire a contractor qualified to fix radon issues. 11. Remove window A/C units. If you use window air conditioning units in the summer, remove them before the weather turns cold. If you must leave window A/C units in, cover the entire exterior of the unit with an insulating wrap to keep cold air out.

12. Clean dryer vents. Lint buildup in dryer vents can make your dryer work less efficiently and even cause a fire — cool, dry fall weather increases static electricity, which can ignite lint that has built up, so now is a key time to get that lint out. You can hire a duct cleaning specialist to clean the vents for you, or clean the vent yourself. 13. Deep-clean the kitchen. Take a day to tackle some of the more labor-intensive cleaning tasks, and keep your kitchen working efficiently and looking great: • Degrease the range hood and filter • Clean the oven • Vacuum the refrigerator coils • Scrub tile grout • Clean light fixtures • Wash the walls and backsplash • Wash the garbage can and recycling bins • Clean small appliances 14. Conduct an energy audit. A trained auditor can assess your home’s current energy efficiency and give you a list of recommended improvements you can make, which may include upgrading to Energy Star appliances, adding insulation to the attic or beefing up weatherstripping. You can also find instructions for a do-it-yourself energy audit at Energy.gov. 15. Schedule a chimney cleaning and heating system maintenance. Making sure your chimney and furnace or boiler are cleaned, maintained and in working order before you need to turn on the heat is an important safety measure. And be sure to add a chimney cap if you don’t already have one — it will stop critters from crawling down your chimney!

Home Town Heros By Tyler Francke, Canby Now Podcast
hey are the stuff of legends. Their stories weave through the fabric of small town’s and their achievements on the field, the court, the track and beyond stand for eternity, looming larger than life. They are our sports heroes, and we in Canby have had more than our fair share. In this piece, we will look back on just a few of the many worthy athletes. Glendolene Vinyard No discussion of Canby’s hometown sports heroes would be complete without mention of Glendolene Vinyard, truly one of the most remarkable women this local chronicler has ever run across. Accolades came early to Glendolene, the only daughter of longtime Canby mayor Ray Vinyard and Canby Women’s Civic Club leader Hazel Phillips Vinyard. In 1916, at the tender age of 10 months, she 34 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
was named “Prettiest Baby” of the Clackamas County Fair. Later, working at Camp Onahlee in Molalla, she was asked to take over as the new archery instructor. Sure, she said. Just one little problem: She didn’t know the first thing about the sport. Not that it was really a problem for Glendolene. The 1933 Canby Union High School grad took all of two days to teach herself archery, and in no time, she was dusting all comers in competitions around the state. In 1938, she smashed the women’s national flight record with a 395 yard bomb at Sherwood field. It would become something of a habit for the “strong-armed girl from Canby,” as newspapers would take to calling her. Two years later, she stunned the crowds at the 61st Annual National Archery Tournament in Portland,
Glendolene Vinyard
with a 423-yard junket that no one — man or woman — could equal. “Glendolene’s arrow zoomed farther than that of any man who put his strength to the heavy bow in freestyle flight competition,” said Oregonian sports writer Pat Frizzell, “for the winning mark of M.B. Davis of Los Angeles in the masculine division was a mere 403 yard, 2 feet, 1 inch.”
She would eventually claim the world freestyle record with an even more astonishing mark of 455 yards, 8 inches. That’s over four and a half football fields! A few years later, she decided to try her hand at bowling, and would find a talent for that too, winning yet another championship in 1948. In 1960, she joined the Mazamas mountaineering club, earning her membership with a summit of the South Sister — despite having been recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She went on to participate in numerous events, and in 1970, led a mountaineering outing to the Ruby Mountains of Nevada. Larry Owings To understand the legend of Larry Owings, you must first understand the legend of Dan Gable. Dan Gable was — and is — a god among men in the world of amateur wrestling. He was, perhaps, the most superbly conditioned athlete the sport had ever seen. He was known to wake up in the middle of night, just to do push-ups while his opponents slept.
He was so well-known for his tirelessness that the Russians — whom he would face in an international career that included two world championships and a gold medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich — had a name for him: “The Machine.” His results were extraordinary. In his international career, undefeated. In the Olympics, he not only won every match, he did so without giving up a single point. In his high school career, undefeated. 64-0. In his first 117 college matches, undefeated, including two national championships. He lost only once, in the final match of his final season at Iowa State. Only one man who ever lived can say he beat Dan Gable, and that man is 1968 Canby Union High School grad Larry Owings. The two met in the finals of the 1970 NCAA wrestling championship. Owings was a sophomore at the University of Washington, who had dropped two weight classes (from 158 to 142) just to get a shot at the legend. It was a decision the Chicago Daily News writer Bill Jauss said made him “either the bravest or dumbest guy in amateur wrestling.” Owings may have been the only one in that crowd of 9,000 who thought he had a shot at taking down Gable. He may have been the only one in Gable’s 182 previous opponents who saw him as anything other than invincible. But he was right. Owings didn’t wipe the floor with Gable; that would have been impossible. But he squeaked out an early lead and manage to barely hang onto it through a close, hard-fought, furious match that exhausted both men. When the 13-11 decision was announced in Owings’ favor, the Northwestern University fieldhouse in Evanston, Ill., erupted in a standing ovation. It still stands as one of the most shocking upsets in sports history. Owings’ immediate reaction also no doubt described many of Gable’s fans: “When it was over, I looked at Dan, and he looked like he didn’t know what had happened.”

A cannon for an arm wasn’t Baller’s only physical gift. He was also unusually tall, at 6-foot-6, and his size helped him get extra velocity on his fastball, in much the same way Hall of Famer Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson’s 6-foot-10 frame enabled him to throw in excess of 100 mph. “He is big, strong and has some meanness,” a minor league baseball exec would later say. “He has a chance to be a good power pitcher with his fastball and good, hard slider.” The Phillies, led enthusiastically by Harper, took Baller with their third pick in the 1979 MLB draft (98th overall). Baller played well in the Phillies’ farm system, even earning himself a spring training camp invite in 1981 after leading his league in strikeouts in AA ball. But he didn’t make it to the big club until Phillies’ management took an unusual approach to his development..
Jay Baller For a high school pitcher hoping to get a chance at the big leagues, throwing a no-hitter is a good way to catch a scout’s eye. But that wasn’t good enough for Jay Baller. He threw six. From the time he first stepped onto the pitcher’s mound at what we now call Wayne Oliver Field, Baller had his heart set on one thing: making it to the big leagues. “The fastball is the most effective pitch in baseball. That is the first thing I look for in a pitcher,” said Bill Harper, the Philadelphia Phillies scout who scouted Baller at Canby High. “In professional baseball, if you can throw hard, you can make it.” Baller could throw hard. In high school, his fastball was clocked at 90 mph, and a few years later, he’d be up to 95. This was at a time when the average major league heater was 86. 36 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Baller had always been a starting pitcher, but the Philadelphia bullpen desperately needed help, and the front office said he would have a faster ticket to the major leagues if he would agree to switch to a reliever. It worked. He made his Major League debut with the Phillies as a reliever on Sept. 19, 1982, throwing a scoreless, hitless inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over the next 10 years, Baller would spend time with the Cubs and Royals before returning to Philly. He would compile 117 strikeouts over 156 innings pitched, with six saves, but never stuck in a major league bullpen for a full season. But the big leagues aren’t everything. During the winters, he played in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, where he earned three Closer of the Year awards while setting an all-time league record with 56 saves that still remains intact. Exercising To Improve Function
W
hen thinking about reasons to exercise most of us think about weight loss, building muscle, and improving health. However, there is another reason for exercise that perhaps you haven’t thought about: Exercising for FUNCTION. Did you know that the right exercises will help improve how your body moves allowing you to feel less pain, perform everyday activities with ease, and continue to be active for life? Doing everyday things like walking, running, climbing up and down stairs, and maintaining balance is something most of us want to keep doing for life. Maintaining or re-establishing a working relationship between your ankles, knees, hips, and
pelvis is vital for these activities. One exercise that can improve the stability, strength, and function of those joints is the LUNGE. If you are unable to perform a lunge properly and without pain, you are likely on a path to injury. Lunges can be daunting if you are new to exercise or don’t feel you can do them safely or without pain. So, don’t start there. There are many different exercises that can help you start building stability and strength that will lead to the ability to do lunges and more importantly, improve how your body functions. THE BEST FEMALE HIGH SCHOOL TRAP SHOOTER IN THE COUNTRY
JUST MIGHT BE ISSABELLA
BERGE,
A PINT-SIZED SENIOR AT
CANBY HIGH SCHOOL BY TYLER FRANKE
T
he best female high school trap shooter in the country just might be Issabella Berge, a pint-sized senior at Canby High School.
In the words of her dad, Tryg Berge, also an assistant coach for the Canby High School Trap Shooting Team, “she’s 5-foot-nothing, 100 pounds soaking wet.” But she has a talent in the country’s fastest-growing high school sport that belies her small stature, and this summer, she proved it on the sport’s biggest stage. If you’re not familiar with trap shooting, imagine trying to hit a target approximately the size of a
hockey puck at 16 yards. Now, imagine that target is flying through the air at 40 mph in a random direction. That’s trap shooting. This past summer at the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship, held in July in Mason, Mich., Issabella stunned onlookers by scoring a perfect 100 in the qualifying round. How rare is that? Put it this way, says her dad: Out of 1,800 of the best high school trap shooters in the country, only Issabella and six other competitors — all boys — accomplished that feat. She actually hit 138 in a row before she finally missed one. Asked if he thought she might never miss again, head coach Chuck McClaugherty quips, “I hoped not.” Issabella remembers it well. Trap shooting is done in rounds of 25 birds at a time. In the first 25, she didn’t realize she was perfect until the last one. She was afraid the increased pressure might cause her to overthink the shot and miss, but she didn’t. Before that day, her previous best had been 49 out of 50, and in the back of her mind, she figured she would match that. She would have been happy going 49 for 50 in the national championship. But, she was still perfect after 50 targets had flown. “It was pretty nerve wracking,” she recalled. “After the first 50, we took a little break. I called my cousin, and I was freaking out.” Then, another 25 flew, and Issabella still had failed to miss a single one. “By the 75th bird, I was shaking,” she says. “I mean, you couldn’t tell. When I was out there, I had a straight face, furrowed brow, just in the zone. But, inside of me was screaming.” “I had so many emotions running through me,” Tryg Berge said. “Her mom and I were standing on the sidelines. When she got to 90, there’s just so much stress

involved, I know I would miss 10 straight if it had been me.” A large crowd had gathered by then, including most of the spectators and many of the other competitors. They began counting down the final 10. 91...92...93...94...95...96...97...98... “She got to 99, and I’m thinking this has got to be the toughest bird she’s ever shot in her life,” Tryg said. “She calls ‘pull,’ and just crushed it. Everybody went crazy.” “It was hard to not cry,” McClaugherty said. “She always practices. She’s so dedicated to the sport. She’s always here, rain or shine, wind or snow or anything. To see all that come together for her, in front of such a huge crowd and on such a big pedestal, it was awesome.” For Issabella, it was a shining moment. She had proven herself in the heavily male-dominated sport. But, she admits, it was a little bittersweet. “On the one hand, it was amazing to have outshot all these boys, but I was really disappointed that I was one of the only girls there,” she says. She’s hoping that her example might inspire other girls to take up a sport that she’s found to be a great source of confidence, discipline and personal growth. “I would like more women and girls to get into it,” she said. “I’m hoping that by me doing so well, it can encourage more girls to get into it.” CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 39
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Dr. Alan Neal
M EM E TE
E
T
THE DOCTOR DOCTOR THE by Tyler Franke
Throw away that fear of going to the dentist office and get ready for a warm greeting from Dr. Alan Neal. Dr. Alan Neal has been helping perfect the smiles of Canby residents of all ages for about five years, but it wasn’t his first dentist gig.
that probably would have only been a short-term solution anyway, Dr. Neal suggested replacing his damaged teeth with implant dentures.
Originally from Astoria, Dr. Neal earned his undergraduate degree from Eastern Oregon University and attended dental school at the University of Pittsburgh. While there, he accepted a health profession scholarship with the U.S. Air Force.
“We had him back in here today, and he was smiling, had a little gleam in his eye,” Dr. Neal says. “He was talking about eating steak. He’s much happier now.”
His job would be to provide general dental care to airmen and to help prepare them for deployment. “It was just supposed to be for three years, but it turned into nine,” Dr. Neal says. “I was having a good time.” It often throws people for a loop when they find out he was in the Air Force, even when he tries to make it clear that his service was as a dentist. “I get asked a lot: ‘What did you fly?’” he says. One of Dr. Neal’s specialties is implants and braces. He has a real passion for turning things around for folks who don’t like their smile. He told the story of a patient who “hadn’t been smiling for a while.” Rather than costly reparative work
Dr. Neal also loves patients who have anxieties about seeing the dentist. “Give me someone who is really nervous,” he says. “I try to talk them through it. Sometimes, we’ll give them a little medication, but ultimately, I’m trying to get my patients to be able to cope with what’s bothering them. “A lot of my patients who are super nervous, they’ll end up falling asleep on me. I have that happen every week.”

Rotarians Are People of Action Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today's most pressing challenges. Canby Rotarians volunteered nearly 200 hours as Clackamas County Fair gate greeters and ticket takers during the fair's five days from August 13 through 17. This family-oriented recreational activity draws thousands of people each year to Canby, and Rotarians joined others to make it successful. The Cutsforth's Cruise-In Car Show on August 24 drew more than 650 vehicles entries to Wait Park and surrounding streets. Canby Rotarians volunteered about 120 hours and served 855 lunches of hamburgers or sausage dogs to the estimated 2500 people who attended the 25th annual event. Rotarians joined Cutsforth Thriftway, Canby Cruisers Car Club, the City of Canby, and other community groups in organizing and hosting the car show. Community service is central to the Rotary motto "Service Above Self" which means unselfish volunteer service.
Upcoming Projects: October, 24: World Polio Day Rotarians in Canby and around the world lead the effort to immunize children and educate adults about the dangerous polio virus.
December 1 - 15: Fighting Hunger Canby Rotary emergency food voucher fundraising. Vouchers are distributed though The Canby Center.
Club Officers December 10 - 20: Serving Families Rotarians are volunteer food collectors, sorters, and packers for the Canby Kiwanis Christmas food and toy drive.

Canby Rotary 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
Rotarian Tony Helbling
2019 marks the twentieth annual Canby Rotary 3-on-3 basketball tournament held in Wait Park on July 27. There were 106 teams who competed on a nearly perfect summer day. Among the participants were youth from Canby, Aurora, Molalla, Wilsonville, Silverton, Woodburn, and other nearby communities. Adult participants included several teams sponsored by Clarios (formerly Johnson Controls) of Canby.
Canby Rotarian Tony Helbling is an electrical utility construction manager who works for Wilson Construction Company. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
The Canby Rotary Club 3-on-3 basketball tournament was started in 1999 with a focus on the celebration of athleticism, fair play, and community involvement. The tournament continues today because of the support of teams, sponsors, and the financial support of community businesses and organizations.
Tony is a leader among leaders. His active participation in City of Canby, Canby Area Chamber of Commerce, and Canby Rotary leadership positions makes a difference by his strategic and pragmatic approach to problem solving.
The tournament serves youth in our area and raises money used to fund scholarships for local students and to support efforts of local food banks, The Canby Center, Clackamas County Junior Livestock Auction, The Canby Public Library teen room, Boy Scout service projects, Canby Kiwanis food and toy drive, Independence Day fireworks display, Slice of Summer performances in Wait Park, and disaster relief in the United States and around the world. We are grateful to the all of the 2019 financial sponsors including Tournament Sponsor Direct Link and Champion Sponsors; Clarios (Johnson Controls), Backstop Bar and Grill, Bill Reif RE/MAX Equity Group, Canby Car Wash and Auto Lube, Canby Ford, Clackamas Federal Credit Union, Cutsforth Marketplace, Roth Heating and Cooling, Kahut Waste Services, Millar's Point S Tire and Auto, and Willamette Valley Country Club.
Tony was President of the Rotary Club of Canby in 2016-2017. He volunteers by raising funds for Rotary Dollars emergency food assistance, as a Clackamas County fair gate greeter and ticket taker, The Reading Rotarians literacy project, Canby High School mock job interviews, and Junior Achievement business ethics course in local elementary school classes. He is the "operations" leader for the annual Canby Rotary 3-on-3 "Nothing-But-Net" basketball tournament. He is the kind of man who fosters team work. He has demonstrated sustained commitment to his family, profession, in our community, and as a steward of the larger world. Tony's distinguished record of professional and community service earned him the Rotarian of the Year award in 2019. Thank you, Tony, for all that you do.

THE CHAMBER CORNER
OCT-NOV 2019
Good day Canby, Business is booming here in Canby, and there are a lot of new developments in our Downtown. As Canby’s premier business advocacy organization, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t celebrate a couple of new developments happening in our downtown. We just helped cut the ribbon on Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Associates’ new building and we are looking forward to celebrating another couple of new downtown businesses that are expanding our choices when it comes to shopping and dining. Make sure to come down and support our newest downtown retailer Barn Door Boutique and Décor as we celebrate their Ribbon Cutting on October 17th. We will also be dedicating a ribbon cutting to Wayward Sandwiches on Halloween in the midst of all our downtown Trick or Treating festivities. The downtown is filling up fast with new options, new choices, new developments, and new events, and we can’t be happier with what this means for our community. We are, as always, here to support our local businesses and to improve the quality of living in our community through business advocacy and outreach, so if you are a local business owner looking to grow your business, in need of a local referral, or just wanting to know what’s going on around town, then look no further than the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce. We are here to serve. Enjoy the rest of your fall, Kyle Lang Executive Director Canby Area Chamber of Commerce www.canbyareachamber.com 503-266-4600

HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIPS 101 BY BARBARA GOSSACK
delays can potentially disrupt a trip, plan to arrive a day early, especially during the holiday season.
3. Bring all important essentials in your carry-on baggage
(travel information & documents, medication, basic toiletries, change of clothes) so you are prepared in the event of lost or delayed baggage. Bring snacks and an empty water bottle to fillup after you clear airport security.
4. Do not bring wrapped gifts in carry-on bags in case inspection is requested Remember to follow TSA guidelines for bringing liquids on board. Containers must be 3.4 oz or less and the total number of these items you have (liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes) must fit into 1-quart size Ziploc bag.
I
f you’ve been procrastinating, it’s time to look at your options and get busy making some decisions. It’s not too late! There is still time to book your holiday travel this year. Thinking of visiting relatives for Thanksgiving or spending Christmas in Mexico? We all know that traveling over the holidays can be busy, more expensive and stressful; but if you plan well, remember to be flexible, and have some patience during the process, it will all come together. Here are some tips on booking your holiday travel.
1. Choose your travel days wisely
During the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas many of us just can’t avoid the peak travel days, but if you can, try to avoid • the Wednesday before Thanksgiving • The Saturday before each holiday • The Sunday after each holiday These will typically be the busiest and most expensive days to travel. Some of the least expensive flights will be on the actual holiday or other week-days in between the holiday and weekends.
2. Search alternative airports and dates near your destination for fare and route comparisons.
Look for good connections, allowing extra connection time and avoiding airports most affected by winter weather. If you are booking a cruise vacation or other time sensitive trip where travel
5. Consider applying for TSA Precheck Save yourself a lot of time and security line headaches. You’ll get to skip the longest lines at security and keep your shoes on. TSA Precheck is worth the $85 fee and your application lasts for 5 years.
6. Work with a travel professional for complex itineraries
If you are limited on time and are looking at adding more travel components like hotels and car rentals; or are still trying to figure out a holiday cruise, tropical resort or other complex trip, consider enlisting the services of a Travel Consultant to help you navigate all of this and save yourself time and money. October 5, 8:00 am:
Garry Harrocks presents a Volunteer Talk on the Ford GT Mark IV. This race car is the culmination of an ego-driven act of revenge that changed the face of motorsports in the 1960s. Ford, looking for an image boost, entered into merger discussions with Enzo Ferrari only to be rebuffed at the last minute. After finally breaking through to win Le Mans in 1966, Ford unleashed the American designed and constructed Mark IV in 1967. While it only raced twice, it won both races convincingly.
