Amy Jo was born in Washington and grew up in small town Alaska, so she was drawn to small town Camas. In 2013, she opened her store in downtown Camas and knew it would be a great addition. After traveling for many years with a family entertainment company, where she met her husband, “we chose the Vancouver area as a place to settle and raise our two daughters. That’s when I decided it was time to get back into the workforce.” She wasn’t ready to put her girls in daycare, so she searched for a business where her children would be close by. “I knew this was not only something that I could do but I would enjoy doing and helping other mothers like myself.” She has spent the last eight years juggling motherhood and building a successful company that sells an assortment of children’s clothing, toys, books, and equipment at reasonable prices, and ensuring an enjoyable and relaxing shopping experience for parents. “I still have a list of ideas I wrote down before I ever opened, and I look back on it now and laugh because I realize how silly some of them were.” But she knew she’d have to adapt to the market. These days, the store has adapted to selling online, too. “And now that we are online, many visitors are happy they can now order from home, knowing the quality of merchandise we carry.”

I had about a month to renovate, paint, fill up the store with beautiful and fun products, hire amazing ladies to help, plan a grand opening...and breathe. Well, we did it! I had amazing help from friends and family. At first, I was so nervous and worried that no one would show up to the event, but that quickly turned into a worry of whether I’d have enough product for everyone. I made mistakes, learned, and stumbled my way

SUMMER CINEMA
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986): PG-13
“Nobody leaves my cheese in the wind.” Hands down this is one of my all-time favorites which I constantly quote. It’s the story of a high school senior who takes a “skip day” for a grand adventure with his friend and girlfriend. Directed and written by John Hughes, and like all of his movies, it’s quirky, funny, colorful, cinematic, musical, philosophical, and honest. Matthew Broderick steals the show as he dances and sings and jokes across the screen; Alan Ruck, who plays his best friend, is a hilarious hypochondriac sidekick; and Mia Sara, who plays the girlfriend, is funny and incredibly sharp. And really, no character is wasted: the jealous sister, the goofy secretary, the oblivious parents, the high school students, the parking garage attendants. But let us not forget the petty and pointless Principal Ed Rooney, played by Jeffrey Jones, to whom the above quote belongs, who lights up every scene. It’s quintessentially 80s, larger-than-life, absurd, and it has the legendary 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider, which famously soars the Chicago streets when stolen by the parking garage attendants. A must-see for summer!
Disney-Pixar’s Luca (2021): G
“It’s just the greatest thing that humans ever made, the Vespa!” Like most new Disney-Pixar movies, Luca doesn’t disappoint. It’s utter eye candy, a gorgeous film to watch. Taking place in a fictional 1950s Italian Riviera, with director Enrico Casarosa drawing from his very own childhood, Luca feels like a summer period-piece: it’s classic, warm, relaxed, tropical, and yet somehow boundless, stretching like the blue-green sea. The movie is a coming-of-age story following the title character, Luca, a boy seamonster who wants nothing more than to visit and explore the human village of Portorosso. Luca and his best friend, Alberto, also a sea-monster, befriend a kind human named Giulia, and proceed to have that type of unforgettable summer you only experienced as a kid. Interestingly enough, like Brave and Frozen, there’s no love interest! But there is bromance, and it’s wonderful to watch. The Sandlot

I think everyone has heard the quote “you’re killing me, smalls,” but maybe you don’t know it’s from this movie! Probably one of the best kids’ baseball movies ever, The Sandlot is a time machine into the summer of 1962 and the simpler times of childhood: monster dogs, making new friends, pretty girls, and the sublime sound of a wooden bat cracking a baseball. The movie follows a new kid in town who joins a pickup baseball team who plays in the “sandlot,” and their mental state and inventory of baseballs is completely dependent on The Beast, a mysterious and terrifying monster dog who lives behind the fence. It’s one of those boys-will-be-boys movies: sun-kissed summer days, riding bikes in the streets, occasional swearing, pretty lifeguards, running from scary dogs, and mysterious neighbors behind fences. Better for slightly older kids due to language and The Beast, The Sandlot is a great movie for a lazy summer afternoon.
Grease
(1978): PG-13
“Tell me about it, stud.” Grease is iconic, pure and simple, and a movie musical that follows high school seniors in their final year before they graduate. Loaded with nostalgic 1950s Americana, there’s leather jackets, PINK!, blue jeans, bouffants and pompadours, dancing and rock and roll, smoking and fighting, high school cliques, and hot rods. After a crazy and unlikely summer fling between Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), they realize they go to the same school and now must reconcile how different they are. Not wholly dissimilar to Romeo and Juliet if you think about it, they’re driven apart by their friends and social roles, but like the doomed couple they just can’t stay apart. It’s funny, whimsical, spectacular, but also deals with the serious issues faced by teenagers: rebellion, love and romance, friendship, drugs and alcohol, violence and mortality. Not appropriate for small children, Grease is a classic nonetheless and a great summer flick!

T
he evolutionary, genre-defying culinary extravaganza we are referring to as a “Sports Restaurant”! You read that correctly: Burgers & Beer Bar & Grill is not a sports bar in the traditional sense. General Manager Todd Hammel, working cooperatively with the owners, Karen and Dan Finley, has established something truly unique and special here. They have created a space that is steeped in all of the trappings of the quintessential brewpub— including 37 TVs, 24 taps, outdoor patio seating, Geeks Who Drink Trivia Nights, etc.—but they’ve added an extra layer of polish to the whole endeavor. They’ve elevated every aspect of the experience so that, ironically, it’s not just a place to meet for burgers and beers (and perhaps a game); it’s a place for the whole family to enjoy an afternoon or evening out under any circumstances!
Okay, pragmatically speaking, it may not be the best place to fashion a romantic evening, but that’s only to say that the atmosphere weighs heavier on the scale towards cheerful and upbeat versus intimate. It has been perhaps best described by some as a little touch of Vegas here in the Northwest. From the electric blue ambient lighting under the bar, to the circular banks of TVs suspended over the dining area, to the fire tables outside, there is an aura of grandeur here not unlike a restaurant you might find along the strip. Todd immediately asserts himself as the kind of person whose establishment you want to frequent. If you were looking for employment, he’s the person you would want to work for. Warm, friendly, and infinitely enthusiastic, he’s the ideal manager for a place such as this. At this point in his career, he comes by it naturally. Sandwiches are also extremely popular, and guests can’t get enough of their Reubens, or their Rachel’s Fried Chicken Sandwiches (served with sautéed mushrooms and onions, gouda, and spicy mayo on a brioche bun). All of their dishes though are delicious, fresh, homemade, and to-die-for! And they do offer alternatives for those with food sensitivities and preferences (gluten-free buns, vegetarian “meat” options, etc.). Origins
The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Washington State. However, not until 1972—58 years after Mother’s Day was made official by President Woodrow Wilson—did Father’s Day become a national holiday. The campaign to celebrate fathers didn’t have the same enthusiasm as celebrating mothers–maybe because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginian church sponsored the nation’s first event honoring fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. But it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year in Spokane, Washington, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish an official holiday for fathers. She went to the YMCA, local churches, business owners, and government officials to garner support for her idea, and she was successful! On June 19, 1910, Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day, and the holiday slowly spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to observe Father’s Day.
Controversy and Commercialism
Strangely, many fathers and men criticized the holiday! As one historian wrote, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental 16 To Advertise With Us, Call Brad 360.606.3412
attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products–often paid for by the father himself.” During the 1920s and 1930s, a protest movement formed to demand a single holiday instead, called Parents’ Day, in place of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Each Mother’s Day, pro-Parents’ Day groups protested in New York City’s Central Park. Parents’ Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere commented, “a public reminder that both parents should be loved and respected together.” The Great Depression, however, deflated these protest efforts, as retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men; promoting neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. At the breakout of WWII, advertisers argued that Father’s Day honored American troops and supported the war effort. After the war, Father’s Day was still not a federal holiday, but it became a national institution. In 1972, in the midst of his arduous presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon made Father’s Day an official national holiday. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. In other countries–especially in Europe and Latin America–fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19. In the United States and elsewhere, Father’s Day 2022 will occur on Sunday, June 19.

transitioned to a staff position at the Joint Operations Center. He’s often away ten days at a time.
H
eroes come in all shapes and colors. Some stand out performing courageous acts. Others, like Matthew and Amber Erwin, live lives of quiet service and commitment to others. The couple was genuinely surprised to be singled out, as they think their choices were obvious and simple. They met in 2004 after joining the Guard in the same month and same year. Amber had just left active Army service stateside and joined the Guard to head overseas to Iraq. Matthew had always been in the Guard and was traveling to Iraq in the same unit, where they were both stationed at Camp Anaconda near Balad, working different shifts in different jobs. It was only at the end of their deployment that Amber and Matthew met and it was love at second sight. They were married after six months, and today, after twenty years of service, the couple has two children–a daughter and a son– and continue to serve in the Guard. They’ve found, as career soldiers, that one of the biggest challenges they’ve faced has been maintaining their commitments while raising children alone without local family support. For example, when they returned home from Iraq, Matthew was poised to start his accounting internship when he learned he was being deployed again. Amber called the state of Ohio and convinced them to take her instead, so that he could complete his studies and graduate on time. Amber was gone another year and hasn’t regretted it a single second. Since they don’t serve weekends together, over the years they’ve learned to manage separations and to rely on friends to cover for them on weekends of active duty. Amber, the nurturer, works in a training center and serves away at least one weekend a month. Matthew, who excels in organization, has just

When asked why they chose military service, they both cited the incredible opportunities that this life offers: educational support; the chance to grow and mature; and acquire a solid sense of values and integrity with purpose. Most of all, today they appreciate the chance to help others by providing examples of leadership to young people entering the service. When asked if they’ve seen a shift in young people joining today versus when they signed up, they both agreed young soldiers coming in exhibit an extreme lack of discipline, but they see this as an opportunity to contribute more and make a difference. As for their young family, when asked if they’d want their children to enter the service, they both agreed affirmatively. Amber stated emphatically, “Everyone at some point in their life should have to work in a restaurant, in retail, and in the military.” Matthew added with some emotion, “Last night, an incident occurred that makes the point. We’d come home with the children and found our neighbor outside, distressed. Apparently, their dog was missing.” Without any complaint or request from Amber or Matthew, both children got on their bikes and headed out into the neighborhood. Happily, the children found the dog, safe and sound, several blocks away. How do you teach service? Dedication? Caring for others? Empathy? Clearly, through quiet steady service, Amber & Matthew Erwin have continued to set an exceptional example of all of those qualities to anyone fortunate enough to know and work with them. An example of quiet leadership of which we can all be proud. Thank you for your service.

I
n the automotive service industry, it’s really all about integrity. There are dozens of service shops all over town. Some offer more services than others or have “special” pricing or “special” tools (alignment racks, etc.), but for most of us, the key deciding factor in choosing a service shop is trust. We need to trust the people doing the work. We need to know that we are getting exactly what we pay for, and that we are only paying for those services which are absolutely necessary. In short, we need a shop which is built on integrity, and that is exactly what has made Top Performance Automotive a local favorite for 17 years! Owner & operator Tony Martin has been in the industry for 35 years, and there’s very little that he hasn’t seen or done during that time. When he struck out on his own and founded Top Performance back in 2004, he had a clear vision for the kind of business he wanted to run; one built upon a foundation of integrity, honesty, and full transparency. In such a competitive industry, he understood that was the most basic and essential component, and, not surprisingly, the customers responded! Business was so good that in 2013 he outgrew his original location and built a brand new facility on 192nd Avenue, where he resides to this day. What began as a one-man operation out of his garage has now expanded to a facility which boasts 12 service bays and as many as 18 employees (slightly less right now due to COVID-19). They offer oil changes, brake services, complete transmission services, basic tuneups, diagnostics, and all general services. According to Tony, they basically cover everything bumper to bumper with the exception of tires and body work! And their prices are more than reasonable! They don’t guarantee to always be the cheapest place in town, but they are always competitive, fair, and honest. Really, you

don’t want to go to the cheapest place anyway; you want to go to the place that is the most reasonable based on the job. At Top Performance, they always tell you (and show you!) exactly what’s wrong, what it will take to fix it, and how much it will cost, period. No games, no hidden charges or fees.
