elicious and authentic New York style pizza made for pizza lovers, by pizza lovers!
Camas Slices, your new favorite pizzeria, brewery, and restaurant, is the brainchild of business partners John Strocko and Eric Duensing. These two gentlemen moved here from Washington D.C. with one purpose in mind: to bring the best, most authentic New York Style Pizza to the Northwest. Fortunately for us, they chose Camas as their new home! Although as a business they are new to us, having just opened in January of 2021, they are far from a fledgling enterprise. In fact, on the East Coast where they were initially established, they’ve been dominating the food truck industry since 2010! Under the moniker DC Slices, they’ve won numerous awards, including Top 10 Food Trucks in America in 2012 and the Number 1 Pizza Truck in America in 2017. With a sincere passion for pizza and a consistent desire to keep improving every day, they’ve conquered one coast and now seek to conquer ours! Eric, a founding owner, and John, who joined in 2014 and is now a managing partner, have the utmost respect for the craft, work daily to perfect their recipes, and provide the best dining experience possible. As a testament to their efforts, regulars consist of many transplant East Coasters who long for a taste of home! Hands down, you can’t beat their food, and their fun cityscape decor and superior service make it the ideal place to socialize as well. So let’s talk food. You haven’t lived until you’ve tried their fan-favorite Pickle Pizza, with Garlic Aioli, Honey Mustard,

Mozzarella, Dill, Red Onion, Bacon, Pickles. They serve their own superior versions of all the standards, but this one is something you simply must experience. Not in the mood for pizza? How about a baked Stromboli? It’s like the equivalent of what could be considered an Italian Burrito. Want something lighter? Try a fresh, house-made salad with arugula or a Kale Caesar. Or try a local favorite, their Kale Panzanella, an Italian bread salad consisting of Kale, Roasted Cannellini Beans, Kalamata Olives, House-toasted Croutons, Fresh Tomatoes, Ricotta Cheese, and House-Made Red Wine Vinaigrette. And we’ve only scratched the surface. If you believe there’s no pizza without liquor and beer, never fear! Not only do they serve beer, they craft and brew their own, and they put as much time and care into it as they do their food. Their Helluva Hefeweizen comes from a 400 year old recipe! Get it by the pie or by the slice! Or choose from their delicious food and drink alternatives which are so plentiful as to fill 3 more pages. Celebrate Camas, New York Style, at Camas Slices! Visit them at 339 NE Cedar St. in Camas, or call them at (360) 787-4992

HISTORY
By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
or the multitude of travelers crossing the Interstate Bridge between Oregon and Washington, Jantzen Beach is simply a vast spread of shopping centers, restaurants, and hotels clustered on Hayden Island as you zoom past. Many will have a vague notion of the area being associated with the Jantzen brand of swimwear, but with each passing year the memories of the iconic Jantzen Beach Amusement Park dwindle into obscurity. Back in the day, hailed as the “Coney Island of the West,” Hayden Island was once home to the largest amusement park in the nation—a massive park encompassing 123 acres that was patronized by over 30 million people during its 42 years of operation. It all began in 1927 when William A. Logus and Leo F. Smith purchased forty acres on Hayden Island from the Portland Electric Power Company. Shortly thereafter, Logus and Smith launched the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, named after Carl Jantzen of swimwear fame; along with a number of Jantzen executives and several prominent members of the community, Carl 10
VANCOUVER REGIONAL COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Jantzen underwrote the entire $500,000 project. Jantzen and his fellow investors envisioned the park as a showcase to promote swimming as a public activity, which later included the company’s sponsorship of national “Learn to Swim” weeks throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. With swimming as a primary focus of the park, four gigantic swimming pools were constructed as well as a natatorium (an indoor swimming facility). The Jantzen Beach Amusement Park officially opened on May 26, 1928. In addition to the swimming pools, the park also featured a number of popular rides including the Big Dipper Roller Coaster and a custom-made carousel. Constructed by C.W. Parker, the “American Amusement King,” the carousel was hand-crafted in 1921 and first operated at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. After surviving a fire, the carousel was later shipped to Portland where it became a highlight attraction at Jantzen Beach. Of the various rides created by Parker, only the carousel survives
today. It resides in the custodianship of Restore Oregon, an organization with plans to reassemble and install the carousel in a permanent new home that will “serve as a new attraction for our region.” On a spooky note, the carousel was for years the source of ghost stories. A number of youngsters, as well as maintenance workers, claimed to have witnessed ghostly children on or about the ride. The Big Dipper Roller Coaster, designed by Carl Phare, took center stage as the featured attraction of the park. The “Dipper,” a gigantic amusement construction, boasted to be the largest roller coaster west of Chicago, traveling 3800 feet per minute with 14 dips, 5 of them in excess of 35 feet, and the steepest dip which plunged riders 70 feet straight down. For the more faint of heart, the park offered a Kiddy Dipper roller coaster, and included arcade games and picnic grounds. One of the biggest draws of the park was the Golden Canopy Ballroom, which became Portland’s premier dancehall during the 1930s and ‘40s. In 1942, Clara Shepard of the Spectator newspaper wrote: “If a young man about town says dancin’ to a girl, he might as well say Jantzen Beach at the same time…for they are synonymous as far as she is concerned. The Golden Canopy Ballroom features the sweetest swing in the country every night of the park’s season, with a parade of big name dance bands moving across its board…” Shepard’s description was no exaggeration. World famous musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong performed at Jantzen Beach to the delight of thousands who flocked to the park for unforgettable nights of top shelf entertainment. By the late 1940s, however, Jantzen Beach was in decline. Vanport, a town created during World War I to house workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver (hence the name Vanport), was located at today’s Delta Park area and provided one of Jantzen Beach’s primary revenue sources. As the second largest city in Oregon at the time (by population), the residents of Vanport frequented Jantzen Beach for its wide variety of entertainment right in their own “backyard.” After the Vanport Flood of 1948, which effectively destroyed the majority of the town, and the
decline in population after the war, this important revenue stream dried up for the once thriving park. Changes in the society at large also contributed to the decline of Jantzen Beach. While television rose to prominence as America’s go-to entertainment, people frequently opted to stay home rather than venture out during their leisure time. When they did venture out, the boundless freedom of the automobile—now a staple of American society—offered endless opportunities for recreational activities. The allure of the traditional amusement park had lost its luster. In 1960, a fire broke out in the Tunnel of Love, resulting in its destruction as well as that of the Fun House and the Dutch Mill. In the face of incidents and declining attendance, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park closed its doors after Labor Day weekend in 1970. Following the closure of the amusement park, Jantzen Beach Center, a large shopping complex, eventually arose, and for some years housed the historic C.W. Parker carousel, which may operate again one day should Restore Oregon succeed in constructing a new home for it. The pumping system for the swimming pools of the old amusement park are still in use today, providing drinking water for residents of the Hayden Island area. And wooden remnants of the Big Dipper Roller Coaster live on at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on S.E. 28th St. in Portland, where they have been repurposed as tables, as well as the bar itself. So the next time you’re caught in traffic on I-5 near Jantzen Beach, allow yourself to daydream a little about the “Coney Island of the West,” that famous amusement park on the Columbia from days gone by that brought joy to millions, and memories to last a lifetime, for those fortunate enough to share in the experience.

Candy Hearts:
A History Of A Sweet Treat
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
N
ecco wafers, candy hearts, Sweethearts, conversation hearts. The candy goes by many names, with silly messages and a chalky consistency. The notorious candy hearts have a strange history that involves a pharmacy and America’s first candy machine. Our story begins in 1847, with a pharmacist named Oliver Chase, who invented a machine to produce lozenges. Back then, apothecary lozenges were popular for sore throats and other illnesses. But 175 years ago, the process to make a lozenge was labor-intensive: pulverizing medicine and sugar paste by hand with a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, then rolling and cutting out little discs. Considered the first candy machine, Oliver invented a lozenge cutter to simplify the process, and smartly shifted from making medicine to making candy, founding Chase and Company, which later became New England Confectionery Company, or Necco! Here’s where the story gets really interesting! Legend tells us that Union soldiers during the Civil War carried Necco wafers, known as “hub wafers,” and Oliver Chase might have been inspired by the love letters
these soldiers carried. Historians suggest instead that Daniel Chase, Oliver’s brother, was inspired by the growing popularity of Esther Howland’s Valentine Day cards which began selling in the mid-1800s. A third and more likely explanation is the oddly named cockle, a popular candy shaped like a scallop seashell which contained a “motto” printed on a thin roll of paper. Daniel cleverly improved upon this design to print the messages directly onto candy, by using a felt roller pad wetted with red vegetable coloring. However, Daniel’s “conversation candies” or “motto lozenges” weren’t heart-shaped until later in 1902. Up until that time, their candy was sold in a simple disc shape, but eventually were sold in shapes like baseballs, watches, and horseshoes. The candy hearts were hugely successful, and over the next 100 years other smaller companies began selling similar candies. In 1990, Necco acquired Stark Candy Company and became the “leading manufacturer in conversation hearts.” Today, the company claims to manufacture nearly 100,000 pounds of Sweethearts every day from midFebruary through January and approximately 8 billion candy hearts each year. But what is a candy heart exactly? Necco offers classic Sweethearts, as well as chocolate, sugar-free, “dazzled,” and “color your own” varieties. According to their website: “Manufacturers combine sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, f lavors, gums and colors into a mixing machine to create a dough, which then goes into a machine that presses it flat, stamps it with sayings and cuts it into hearts. After 30 minutes in a “drying tunnel,” the six different heart flavors are mixed together and packaged.” Surprisingly, they’re not made out of chalk! Daniel Chase’s original printed lozenges were larger and therefore included longer phrases, like “HOW LONG SHALL I HAVE TO WAIT? PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE.” There were also weddingthemed sayings, such as “MARRIED IN WHITE, YOU HAVE CHOSEN RIGHT.” Previous sayings like the timeless “FAX ME” and “GROOVY” have been discontinued. “BE MINE” and “KISS ME” you may be more familiar with. Whatever your feelings on candy hearts, they’re a fun and fascinating little piece of American history.

TOP PERFORMANCE AUTOMOTIVE
The Prices Bring You In But The Service Brings You Back! By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer | Photos By Shonda Feather

n the automotive service industry, it’s really all about integrity. There are dozens of service shops all over town. Some offer more services than others or have “special” pricing or “special” tools (alignment racks, etc.), but for most of us, the key deciding factor in choosing a service shop is trust. We need to trust the people doing the work. We need to know that we are getting exactly what we pay for, and that we are only paying for those services which are absolutely necessary. In short, we need a shop which is built on integrity, and that is exactly what has made Top Performance Automotive a local favorite for 17 years! Owner & operator Tony Martin has been in the industry for 35 years, and there’s very little that he hasn’t seen or done during that time. When he struck out on his own and founded Top Performance back in 2004, he had a clear vision for the kind of business he wanted to run; one built upon a foundation of integrity, honesty, and full transparency. In such a competitive industry, he understood that was the most basic and essential component, and, not surprisingly, the customers responded! Business was so good that in 2013 he outgrew his original location and built a brand new facility on 192nd Avenue, where he resides to this day. What began as a one-man operation out of his garage has now expanded to a facility which boasts 12 service bays and as many as 18 employees (slightly less right now due to COVID-19). They offer oil changes, brake services, complete transmission services, basic tuneups, diagnostics, and all general services. According to Tony, they basically cover everything bumper to bumper with the exception of tires and body work! And their prices are more than reasonable! They don’t guarantee to always be the cheapest place in town, but they are always competitive, fair, and honest. Really, you

don’t want to go to the cheapest place anyway; you want to go to the place that is the most reasonable based on the job. At Top Performance, they always tell you (and show you!) exactly what’s wrong, what it will take to fix it, and how much it will cost, period. No games, no hidden charges or fees. This is a major priority for Tony. He lives here in town and sees customers everywhere he goes. He has to be able to look them in the eye and know that he took care of them; that he did right by them. So that’s what he does. He treats his customers’ vehicles as if they were his own. Plain and simple. That kind of integrity is reflected by the crew he has working for him as well, most of whom have been with him for years—some since the very beginning. So next time you’re looking to get some work done on your vehicle, don’t overpay at the dealership. There is a shop right here in town that will take care of your vehicle exactly the way you want it handled: with fairness, kindness, transparency, and absolute integrity. That place is Top Performance Automotive! Top Performance Automotive is located at 2119 SE 192nd Avenue, in Camas. Call them at 360-833-2281 or visit topperformanceauto.com for more information.

Apollo Drain & Rooter — A Story of Family Story & Photos Provided By Apollo Drain & Rooter Service
W
ith nothing more than an old used van, a dream and a desire to do great work, a young and eager Scott Bird and his bride Jody, began a journey.
If someone were to ask Scott if he was raised on a farm, he could emphatically reply, “Yes!” He grew up in Mattawa, Washington where he worked with his dad, three brothers and three sisters. When he was 21, he went to his cousin’s wedding reception. There, catching his eye from the reception line was his future wife, Jody. Their world grew closer since it was Jody’s sister marrying one of Scott’s cousins. Scott attended Utah Technical College for two years and graduated with a degree in Heating & Air Conditioning. The trade which he would then work in back home in Mattawa. Being back home gave Scott the opportunity to reconnect with Jody and they married in June of 1983. After about a year of working in the Heating and Air Industry, Scott and Jody decided to return to his family farm. Scott worked with his dad on the farm during the day and drove a semi-truck at
night hauling hay cubes to Seattle. Jody went to work for an insurance company in Othello, Washington. Jody’s sister and a couple of Scott’s cousins had started a drain cleaning company in Tri-Cities, Spokane and Salem, Oregon. It was going so well that they talked Scott and Jody into leaving the farm and to start their own drain cleaning business in Portland, Oregon. The Apollo journey: Scott was told by the bank that they didn’t think it was a “good investment.” They were so wrong. After procuring a bank loan, they were able to start a business of their own. Apollo Drain & Rooter was on its way! Their tagline, “Big enough to do the job, but small enough to care” would carry them through many years of hard and difficult work. Using their own apartment as their headquarters and Jody navigating with the large and cumbersome Thomas Guide Map Book, they offered a flat rate of only $26.50, no matter how long it took or how challenging the job was. Over the years of juggling work, marriage and parenthood the Birds eventually grew to become a family of 5 with 3 energetic boys! In 1985 Scott and Jody were blessed with their first baby boy, Brandon. Brandon was continuously by Jody’s side as she answered phones, scheduled jobs and handled the paperwork. In 1988 he was followed by little brother Ryan, and in 1990 their son Derek completed their family and the nest was full. With discipline, hard work and a good sense of humor, the young family survived many ups and downs. Tough economic times challenged their survival in the industry, but they kept going. No matter what challenges they faced, they did so with strength and integrity, always willing to help out their fellow members of the community.

As the Bird boys grew into men, they fully immersed themselves into the family business, which has become one of the fastest growing, full-service plumbing companies in Oregon and Washington. The company of two people has grown to over 50 employees! In 2014 the family became the first in this area to invest in the latest technology of plumbing called Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP). It is their dedication to a growing industry that instilled in them the desire to share this with an area where it is so desperately needed. CIPP, a trenchless lateral drain line repair, is the perfect answer to the root intrusion problem that is so prevalent in the Pacific Northwest. Old pipes are not getting any younger and degradation is a serious problem. Luckily, Apollo is a leader in the installation of LMK’s CIPP technology. After 37 years of successful plumbing and drain business, the Bird family are proud to announce they have added Heating and Cooling Services. This is exciting news, and the company looks forward to working with the community to keep everyone warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
THEN NOW
The Bird’s high standards and love of the work are a testament to their trade. They have great appreciation for the community and their continued support because they would not be where they are today without them.

service to others that inspired him as he got older.
Yet David’s life story explains it all. Escaping the violence in Nicaragua in the 1980s as a one year-old with his parents and two older siblings, he began his new life in a rough section of Miami-Dade County, Florida. In this new place he observed and experienced the violence around him, while his family endured financial hardship and struggled to learn a new language. And yet upon David’s recollection, it’s quite simple: He was blessed to have parents that grounded him with their example of Christian faith and hard work, which embedded values in his character at an early age that have served him through his life.
After basic training in Georgia, he shipped off to Iraq in 2003. As he succinctly told me, “The dream had become a reality.” He also shared his belief that his healing process from experiencing the horrors of war began on Day 1. He recounted his visceral memory of arriving in Iraq and his internal message to himself as they landed. “What I’m about to see is not normal. Please, God, help ground me. The smell, the heat, the chaos - it felt like hell on Earth.”
ergeant First Class David Rocha is the last person to describe himself as a hero. In fact, no one was more surprised when his Unit Battalion Commander recommended him as a subject deserving to be interviewed. That attitude, in a lovely and ironic way, proves the point. A real hero doesn’t see themselves as one. They serve, teach and train, as well as help, support and serve others as a way of life which ref lects their personal philosophy and values.
He recalled a key moment when he was eight years-old. A local group had donated an old rusty Subaru station wagon to his family who had decided to leave Florida and relocate to Indiana. The only immediate challenge to the long journey was that the car had no reverse. However, instead of complaining that the car didn’t work, David saw it as a valuable lesson in life: “We can’t go backwards.” Given those circumstances, it was no surprise when the car broke down in Charleston, West Virginia. David remembers being homeless and spending several nights in the car, parked in a snowpacked Kroger parking lot. It was then that another pivotal moment occurred. The local Salvation Army folks checked in on the family and arranged for them to stay in a housing center where they could find shelter and warmth. Those are David’s first memories of Christmas, and an example of the kind support and

On Mother’s Day in 2001, he went to the local recruiting office and started on the path to enlistment that was completed by July. When asked where he wanted to serve, he joined the Infantry, nervous but unafraid because of his deep faith. And then 9/11 happened.
But he acknowledges that he somehow carried a deep understanding and definition of his job in the military from the beginning. He defines it as being in the business of building other people. “Training others to replace him.” It was that sense of service to others, selflessness, the passing of knowledge and perspective, that has distinguished David’s service then and now. He returned home from war aware that “life is very fragile,” and that when you’re in a moment of do or die, “the only thing that matters is the person to your right and to your left.” It’s this sense of brotherhood that continues to sustain him, and he speaks gratefully of a circle of childhood friends who also served in different branches that still get together often to talk and support one another. In life and even in combat, there’s always a mentor to inspire and guide us. And his definition of “citizen” remains intact: service. As a husband, a father, and a Senior NonCommissioned Officer, David continues to appreciate and value the lessons he’s learned over the years and remains dedicated to helping others. David lives in Camas, WA.
