Chimcare Chimney Service

Chimcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day. Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals. As they have grown, Chimcare has expanded with additional locations in order to service the greater Portland and Seattle areas. Their chimney professionals can service homes and businesses as far north as Everett, Washington and as far south as Salem.

Along with providing chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair services, the great team at Chimcare can also help transform your outdoor living space by constructing a beautiful outdoor fireplace for you to enjoy all year round. They are experts at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar. In 2005 Richard’s son Jesse took over the business. Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse remains committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer. Along with the current customer base, Jesse is working hard to expand Chimcare as his father had always dreamed. They are always looking to serve new customers who are searching for clean-cut service technicians with experience, quality workmanship, and a name that is trusted around the northwest. They are proud to carry on the Peralta family tradition of providing exemplary chimney care for you and your home. If you have any questions or want to inquire about their services, you can visit their website at https://www.chimcare.com, or call them at (800) 362-4840.

any of us living in the Pacific Northwest share a common passion: the love of the great outdoors! Lush greenery, majestic mountains, crystalline rivers; the gorgeous views, even from some of our homes, are truly awe-inspiring. Now imagine having the ability to enjoy those views yearround, not from the confines of your stuffy living room, but from your beautifully-designed, custom-built outdoor living space. Pioneer Patio Covers & Decks turns that dream into a reality! With almost 30 years of experience and expertise in the industry, owners Robert and Jennifer Holbrook are quite simply the best in the business. It’s a point of pride, having both been born and raised in Vancouver, that they can stand behind their products and craftsmanship while servicing friends and neighbors. Their impeccable reputation in the industry has been hard won, and is a reflection of their absolute commitment and dedication to excellence. Combining their strengths to form quite the dynamic duo, Jennifer comes from a business and marketing background while Robert grew up in construction. In fact, his father, Bob, co-owned and operated a local company, Spacemaster Construction, and that’s where Robert gained his passion for this kind of work. Robert went on to spend time in the Army and as a practical nurse, but nothing provided the level of gratification he received from working outdoors with

his hands. After purchasing their first new home, he built a deck, patio cover, and fence, and his neighbors were so impressed they hired him to do theirs. That planted the seed and word spread quickly. Pioneer Patio Covers & Decks was born! Now, all these years later, they couldn’t be happier with the business they’ve built. They can design and construct everything from the simplest of decks, to the most innovative, elaborate, and expansive deck and patio cover systems, transforming any outdoor space into a beautifully-integrated, comfortable, year-round sanctuary. These systems both match and enhance the look of your home, and add great value. In particular, their ACRYLITE® patio covers are boasted as the only system available which keeps the weather out while still allowing the light to pass through. Of course, no business can succeed without the support of a dedicated staff, and Robert and Jennifer are truly grateful for theirs. Their six craftsmen: Rikki, Charley, John, Patrick, Matt, and Sam are the gears that keep the machine rolling. These guys have been with them for an average of 15 years each—a true rarity in this business, and Robert and Jennifer recognize they couldn’t do it without them. Specializing in ACRYLITE® patio cover systems, custom patio covers and custom decks, they do the best work in town. Don’t go another season looking dejectedly out your living room windows! Call Pioneer Patio Covers & Decks today at 360-574-9085, and let them help you to create the outdoor living space you’ve always dreamed of! enis Kurudimov, owner of NW Breeze, has a simple mission: “We want to have people breathing healthier air,” he says. “Especially nowadays, with a lot of people working from home, the air quality in your home is more important than ever.” Denis and his team of HVAC specialists work with a lot of clients who are especially sensitive to allergens, dust, and other air quality issues. His results have even been endorsed by many of the Portland area’s top doctors. “We work with a lot of doctors and the best mold remediation company in the Northwest,” he says. “We’ve worked with some of the most sensitive people, and the immediate change we have seen it have on our customers is what has inspired us to keep doing this work.” Air duct cleaning is not always the easiest service to sell, he admits. For many homeowners, it’s one of those things that is out of sight, out of mind. “A lot of

people just leave it and never get it done,” he says. Plus, unfortunately it’s an industry that can be prone to scams. “It’s one of those jobs that’s something the homeowner can’t really see,” Denis says. “There are trust issues with that. That’s why we are as transparent as possible. We show exactly what we’re going to do, the tools that we use and how it all works.” The tools and process they use are actually pretty cool, so it’s really no surprise that they like to show them off. The process is called “negative air suction,” which essentially uses a giant vacuum cleaner, and they do mean giant. The vacuum itself is about half the size of a standard pickup truck or van! The hose attaches to the furnace duct. Once it’s turned on, it pulls an estimated 1,800 square feet of air every 60 seconds. Denis and his team then go to different registers and access points in the home to agitate the dust and debris, making sure it all gets sucked away and leaving behind nothing but a perfectly clean duct. Of course, some debris may be too large to be pulled out, even by their massive vacuum. That stuff gets cleaned out by hand. Denis says he has seen it all. “We’ve found everything from necklaces, bracelets, a Taco Bell cup from the 1980s, $1,000 in old hundreds and twenties in a glass jar,” he says. “Literally anything you can imagine that can fit in there, I’ve found it and pulled it out.” There’s also a lot of construction debris, typically, especially for newer homes or those that have been recently remodeled. “A lot of times, those vents are treated as garbage cans during construction,” he says.

NORTHWEST BREEZE DUCT CLEANING SERVICE

Denis has been in the business for about five years. It started when he was a teenager, working for another guy who was in the HVAC industry. “He taught me everything I know for air duct cleaning,” says Denis. The day after he turned 18, he walked down to City Hall and got a business license to start his own company. “I knew what I wanted to do,” he says. “I just thought I’d try going into business on my own and see how it goes. It’s been going pretty well. Especially the last two or three years, it’s really grown.” NW Breeze operates all over the Portland metro area, and even as far out as Corvallis, McMinnville, Salem, and Bend. Duct cleaning is recommended at least once every three to five years, depending on the type of HVAC system in your home and if anyone in your household is especially sensitive to air quality issues. Now that it’s summer and we’re all spending lots of time outdoors, it’s more important than ever to give your ducts a thorough cleaning and prepare for fall and winter! Let the amazing professionals at NW Breeze make your air clean again so you can breathe deeply and stay healthy. For more information about NW Breeze and the services they offer, give them a call at 503-925-3155 or visit nwbreezeor.com.

HISTORY

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

C

reated by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, Superman first appeared in 1938’s Action Comics #1, which sold for a staggering $3.25 million in 2021. Starring in 1939’s Superman #1, this was the first comic book ever devoted to a single character. Interestingly, Superman was first created as a homeless villain given temporary powers by a mad scientist, but thankfully Siegel and Schuster gave him a cape, spandex, a Midwestern childhood, and a cool alien backstory instead! Although earning moderate salaries, Siegel and Schuster unbelievably sold the rights and royalties to Superman for $130. When they asked for a raise, DC Comics falsely told Siegel, “Our company has very little to gain in a monetary sense from the syndication of this material.” After filing a lawsuit, they were fired in 1947. Siegel returned to DC in 1959 at standard pay and no byline (aka no credit), leaving again in 1965 and filing another lawsuit. When the Superman movie began production in the 70s, Siegel launched a successful PR campaign and secured $20,000 annual pensions for himself and Schuster, an amount that has increased over time. As of 2016, their estates have launched further copyright lawsuits for additional compensation. But let’s get to Superman’s backstory, if you don’t know it from the many comics and films… The planet Krypton is facing climate collapse and destruction, but the leaders won’t listen to Superman’s father, Jor-El, the planet’s best scientist. Fearing the worst, Jor-El and Lara put baby KalEl into a small spaceship and send him to Earth. Krypton explodes, orphaning Kal-El, and the planet’s remnants become kryptonite, Superman’s one vulnerability. And the red blanket Kal-El is wrapped in becomes his cape! His spaceship crashes in rural Smallville, Kansas, where he’s adopted by the Kents and leads a typical albeit concealed life as Clark Kent, a farmer’s son. But he can’t contain his powers for long, and he yearns for the excitement of the big city. Leaving behind

12 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

his parents and childhood love, Lana Lang, he moves to Metropolis to become a reporter for the Daily Planet, falling in love with Lois Lane, and sneaking off as Superman whenever danger calls. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about Superman’s most important moments in comic book history: The Death of Superman and Crisis on Infinite Earths. 1985’s Crisis was a meta-attempt to restart the continuity (or lack thereof) for Superman and all of DC Comics’ characters, whose backstories had gotten so tangled and contradicted that no one could keep them straight anymore. DC’s solution was to create the multiverse, where all the various versions of characters could live —Golden Age Superman, for instance, lives on Earth 2—and in this “event,” the big baddie, The Anti-Monitor, wants to destroy the multiverse. It’s mind-boggling, epic, emotional, staggeringly illustrated, and a surprisingly fun read that forever changed DC Comics. 1992’s The Death of Superman, a PR stunt cash grab and one of the worst comics ever written in my opinion, made $30 million the first day and sold 6 million copies. The unprecedented idea of Supes’ death shocked the world at the time, but for me it just lacks substance. Superman has survived just about everything, like Batman, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, interdimensional super gods, time travel, and flying through the sun. But Doomsday, a big brute, punches Superman to death for 160 pages! Thankfully, Superman is revived in the incredibly written and redeeming The Return of Superman by Dan Jurgens. If you read Death, make sure you read Return immediately after! One of the most iconic symbols and recognizable superheroes ever, Superman has forever changed pop culture since his inception 84 years ago! Spanning nearly a half century of films and tens of thousands of comic book pages, the Man of Steel continues to capture the hearts and minds of readers young and old. Watch a movie or pick up a comic book today to celebrate this pop icon!

POP CULTURE

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

Christopher Reeve:

Superman I-IV (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987)

Started 44 years ago, Superman I and Superman II blew peoples’ minds! I think this franchise’s success greatly depends upon visionary director Richard Donner, who directed great movies like the Lethal Weapon series and cult classics The Goonies & The Lost Boys. These movies are action-packed, funny, and just solid entertainment (III & IV aren’t as great, but still good). The starstudded cast includes Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Ned Beatty (Otis), and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), among others. But let’s not forget Christopher Reeve, a Cornell and Juilliard School graduate, and classically trained actor. His simple spandex, dark slicked hair and curl were true to the comics, and his kind, sly, understated demeanor were fantastic—the Man of Steel was a true American hero. He played Clark Kent exactly as he should be—meek, bumbling, and clumsy, in the iconic thick black glasses. And that Clark Kent good-naturedness carries into his Superman, an altruistic and all-powerful alien who finds his humanity. Rated PG, watch these classics!

Brandon Routh:

Superman Returns (2006)

The black sheep of Superman movies, Bryan Singer directed and wrote the story, who also directed the hit or miss X-Men movies and the recently acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody. Although visually slick, the pacing is a bit slow, the story too focused on romance instead of action, and Brandon Routh’s Superman is a tad stoic. That said, it’s polished and watchable, but not my favorite. Co-starring Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), James Marsden (Richard White), and Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), and others. Rated PG-13, it’s a solid entry in the Superman cinematic universe.

14 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Henry Cavill:

Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)

Heir apparent to Christopher Reeve and bearing an incredible resemblance, Henry Cavill has 3 films under his belt as Superman and he’s fantastic! Cavill’s Superman is just as sly, kind, and softspoken as Reeve’s, but he’s much more ripped and modern in today’s superhero heyday. Ultimately, you just like Cavill and want to root for him. Directed by the polarizing, long-winded, but reliable Zack Snyder, the movies are visually spectacular, action-packed, funny, and really fun to watch. Man of Steel has a star-studded cast rivaling the original movies, including Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Russel Crowe (Jor-El), and more. BvS and Justice League are team-up movies but still Supermancentric and solid entertainment. Rated PG-13, give them a watch!

Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS Written By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

T

ransform that embarrassing, worn out, and outdated kitchen or bathroom into the beautiful, new, luxurious space you’ve always wanted, and with minimal demolition! Home renovations are never enjoyable. As a rule, they tend to be messy, costly, and incredibly disruptive, often spanning weeks if not months. That’s not the case, however, when you hire Granite Transformations! Their unique concept addresses these issues by preserving and utilizing the majority of your existing functional assets, and in essence, performing more of a “facelift” than a complete remodel. That equates to less mess, lower costs (40% less on average than a full remodel), and far less of a disruption to your daily life. And the results are astounding!

Granite Transformations is a worldwide franchiser with some 240 franchises around the globe. They have been perfecting their methods of operation for more than 20 years. Local franchisee owner Dan Lappin purchased his location, which services Oregon and southwest Washington, 6 years ago. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision to invest and expand, he has relocated to a brand new and highly impressive showroom in Lake Oswego! It was Granite Transformations’ unique process that attracted Dan to the business. Most kitchens and bathrooms are functionally sound, but over the years have just become outdated. As a result, simply “transforming” them versus demolishing and 16 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

starting from scratch makes perfect sense. Granite Transformations’ proprietary makeover methods are highly efficient, and by using recycled materials whenever possible they’re also environmentally friendly. Countertops, cabinets, sinks, backsplashes; they do it all, and everything is engineered in the US and fabricated locally. They do these “makeovers” provided there are no structural changes needed to the building itself. They refresh, customize, and reconfigure cabinetry, countertops, and entire kitchens and bathrooms within your existing walls without extensive demolition. Dan explained, they are make-up artists, not plastic surgeons! If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen or bath, call Granite Transformations first! Let them schedule a free design session to show you the amazing transformations they can provide. Their products are top-notch, require little-to-no maintenance, and come with a lifetime, transferable warranty. Why would you even need to consider anyone else? Granite Transformations is located at 9 Centerpointe Dr. Suite B in Lake Oswego. Give them a call at 503-498-9389.

SWAN ISLAND DAHLIAS

Swan Island Dahlias: A Work of Heart “A beautiful garden is a work of heart” By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

I

t has become increasingly difficult over the past few years to find inspiration in the world, to find reasons to smile. We have sometimes felt overwhelmed, gotten caught up in the negatives, and neglected to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life. Quite literally, we have forgotten to stop and smell the flowers. In order to rectify that situation, though, we need look no further than our own backyards. Swan Island Dahlias, the largest and leading dahlia grower in the entire country, is located right here in Canby, and they want nothing more than to simply share the fruits of their labor with all of us and return that smile to our faces! Established in 1927—with acreage in Portland and on Swan Island, hence the name—the farm was relocated to Canby in 1953. It was purchased by the Gitts family in 1963, and since then has doubled in size and scope. Still owned and operated by the Gitts family to this day, during the blooming season the farm boasts almost 50 acres of the most dazzling, varied, and unique dahlias you’ve ever seen. With 370+ varieties on display, and on average roughly 10 new varieties introduced every year, there’s always something new and exciting to be found.

R12

COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

Gitts Family Prior to the pandemic, the farm hosted a six-day dahlia festival every summer, split between two weekends. Since then, they have adapted to our advantage. Now Swan Island Dahlias is open to the public for two full months, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30. It’s free to attend, free to park, and if the stunning, world-class assortment of gorgeous flowers isn’t enough to lure you, then perhaps the adorable gift shop will. If not that, then the food—anywhere from two to six food trucks are on site at all times, the educational classes (art, health and beauty, floral arranging, dahlia care, and more), or the entertainment (live music every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm) certainly will. This is truly the hidden gem of the Willamette Valley. You don’t want to miss it. Three generations have proudly run Swan Island Dahlias. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with Heather GittsSchloe, daughter of Nicholas and Linda Gitts (who currently run the farm) and granddaughter of Nick and Margaret Gitts, who initially purchased the farm back in 1963. Her passion and love for the farm was evident in every word she spoke. Some of us work to live, but clearly she and her family live to work (on this farm). The gratitude she expressed for being a part of something so sublime and so positive was inspiring, and her sincerest wish was only to share all of this with the community at large. Looking to find some beauty in this world again? Looking for some peace and tranquility? A place to enjoy the company of friends and family, to eat some delicious food, drink and live entertainment? Look no further than Swan Island Dahlias. Located at 995 NW 22nd Avenue in Canby, and open six days a week from 9am to 5:30pm (closed Wednesdays) from Aug. 1– Sept. 30. Gift shop open year round.

BEAU BILLEAUDEAUX FROZEN FRONTIER

By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer United States Air Force Captain Beau Billeaudeaux was 6 years old the first time he tried to fly. The Louisiana native had awakened on Christmas morning to the perfect present: a pintsized replica of the World War II-era Curtiss P-40 Warhawk— complete with pedals and designed to be driven around. But that seemed a bit too pedestrian for young Beau.

“In my mind, it was a plane, and planes are meant for flying,” he recalls with a chuckle. So, that’s exactly what he did—or tried to do. “I always wanted to be a flier from very early on,” Beau says. “So when I got my little P-40, I put on a helmet and scarf and tried to take off and fly. Instead, I went right off the edge of the porch and broke my arm.” Sadly, Beau never joined the ranks of pilots due to poor eyesight. “I wanted my wings desperately,” he admits. “I always felt if you’re going to be an officer in the Air Force, and you want to be the best you can, you’ve got to have wings.” Yet, he still enjoyed a fruitful career with the Air Force and Reserve that spanned nearly 15 years. Beau joined the military in 1960 after earning a geology degree with a focus in petroleum engineering at the University of New Mexico. His commission with the ROTC enabled him to enter at the rank of second lieutenant.

Growing up deep in the heart of Acadiana, also known as Cajun Country, Beau learned to speak French before he learned English—a skill he hoped might help him secure a choice assignment in the military. “I was hoping for beautiful French women and wine,” he recalls with a laugh. “Instead, I got Eskimos and icebergs. They told me, ‘You’re going to northern Greenland.’” He was given a command at the top-secret Thule Air Base, which derives its name from a mythical island of ancient Greece whose name meant “farthest.” Surrounded by ice floes and fjords, the installation is the only place on Earth where four active icebergs come together. “It was four months of total daylight, four months of total darkness, and four months of half and half,” he says with a laugh. “We saw temperatures of 70 below zero. You’d spit and it would be frozen before it hit the ground.” Though remote, Thule would play a critical role in the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, one of the most significant military confrontations of the Cold War, and an episode Beau still remembers as one of the most dramatic of his career. “It was a frightening week; it really was,” he recalls. “This was before the days of satellites so we had this giant radar dish, this ballistic missile early warning system. I had 100 young men under me and I had to try to keep them calm. We came very close to catastrophic nuclear war, and we would have been the first to know about it.” Beau went on to serve assignments at Eglin and Tyndall Air Force bases in Florida and Selfridge Air Base in Michigan, before joining the Air Force Reserve in 1966 and retiring from military service altogether in 1973. “I never regretted a thing,” he says today. “I was so fond and proud of my service. There’s just something about being in the Air Force that was really neat.”

TOP PERFORMANCE AUTOMOTIVE

The Prices Bring You In But The Service Brings You Back! By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer | Photos By Shonda Feather

I

n the automotive service industry, it’s really all about integrity. There are dozens of service shops all over town. Some offer more services than others or have “special” pricing or “special” tools (alignment racks, etc.), but for most of us, the key deciding factor in choosing a service shop is trust. We need to trust the people doing the work. We need to know that we are getting exactly what we pay for, and that we are only paying for those services which are absolutely necessary. In short, we need a shop which is built on integrity, and that is exactly what has made Top Performance Automotive a local favorite for 17 years! Owner & operator Tony Martin has been in the industry for 35 years, and there’s very little that he hasn’t seen or done during that time. When he struck out on his own and founded Top Performance back in 2004, he had a clear vision for the kind of business he wanted to run; one built upon a foundation of integrity, honesty, and full transparency. In such a competitive industry, he understood that was the most basic and essential component, and, not surprisingly, the customers responded! Business was so good that in 2013 he outgrew his original location and built a brand new facility on 192nd Avenue, where he resides to this day. What began as a one-man operation out of his garage has now expanded to a facility which boasts 12 service bays and as many as 18 employees (slightly less right now due to COVID-19). They offer oil changes, brake services, complete transmission services, basic tuneups, diagnostics, and all general services. According to Tony, they basically cover everything bumper to bumper with the exception of tires and body work! And their prices are more than reasonable! They don’t guarantee to always be the cheapest place in town, but they are always competitive, fair, and honest. Really, you

20 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

don’t want to go to the cheapest place anyway; you want to go to the place that is the most reasonable based on the job. At Top Performance, they always tell you (and show you!) exactly what’s wrong, what it will take to fix it, and how much it will cost, period. No games, no hidden charges or fees. This is a major priority for Tony. He lives here in town and sees customers everywhere he goes. He has to be able to look them in the eye and know that he took care of them; that he did right by them. So that’s what he does. He treats his customers’ vehicles as if they were his own. Plain and simple. That kind of integrity is reflected by the crew he has working for him as well, most of whom have been with him for years—some since the very beginning. So next time you’re looking to get some work done on your vehicle, don’t overpay at the dealership. There is a shop right here in town that will take care of your vehicle exactly the way you want it handled: with fairness, kindness, transparency, and absolute integrity. That place is Top Performance Automotive! Top Performance Automotive is located at 2119 SE 192nd Avenue, in Camas. Call them at 360-833-2281 or visit topperformanceauto.com for more information.

PITCH IT GLAMPING

Glamorous Camping Comes to You By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer

W

hat on earth is “glamping?” And what’s this “Pitch It” part? Mash up an outdoor camping event with a glamorous tent pitched in your own backyard and voila! Pitch It Glamping is a mobile company that brings a unique event experience right to your door. Whatever special occasion you’re looking to celebrate, check out Pitch It Glamping, they may have the perfect answer to suit your needs. Theresa Lind, owner and sole operator of Pitch It Glamping, cites the “bubble” protocol in place during the height of COVID as the springboard for her business concept. Having perused a little social media and employed a little research, Theresa realized that a mobile glamping service could be a welcome addition to the area. Other glamping companies in the region require a trip to a designated location site, whereas Pitch It Glamping comes to you. “I love camping and being outdoors. I liked the concept and wanted to be able to give residents in the Pacific Northwest the ability to gather safely and share special moments with family and friends that were in their ‘bubble,’” Theresa relates. Imagine, something so fun just “springing” out of COVID-19! Jumping at the chance to be the first mobile glamping service in the area, Theresa began putting her business together in July of 2021, choosing the name Pitch It Glamping, and seeking guidance from her business advisor, friends, and various contacts in the glamping world. “The glamping community is very uplifting and full of positive people who love the outdoors and sharing it with others,” says Theresa. Having lived in the East Vancouver/Camas area for the last 22 years, Theresa has raised her family here and put her roots down. She loves the outdoor community and the opportunities “to get outside” yearround, thanks to the Pacific Northwest’s accommodating climate. In turn, this enables Pitch It Glamping to operate its services in all seasons all year long. The most popular and requested setups are the couple’s tents and the kids’ sleepover tents.

24 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Theresa’s personal favorite is the picnic tent. “I am in love with our ground tables made just for glamping picnics.” She muses about how much fun it is sitting on the ground picnicking, whether it’s at the park or in your own backyard. “Having a low table to eat at brings a special and unique feeling with the cushions and the rugs,” she adds. These tables can be dressed up or down to compliment either a casual meal or a more elegant and romantic one. Additional setups are available for kids’ birthdays, teen sleepovers, graduation parties, movie nights, game/gaming nights, babymoons (couple’s time before a baby is born), baby/bridal showers, and honeymoons. With Pitch It Glamping you get a customized outdoor glamping experience brought to you. In general, the service operates within 30 miles of the Camas area. Requests beyond the 30 mile radius are also welcome, with considerations for additional mileage and adjusted time frames. Tents, as well as all interior décor, are set up and broken down for you, and all

equipment and linens are disinfected and sanitized between each rental to help safe-guard your family and friends while enjoying your special event. Competitive pricing is offered on the various tent setups and packages, as well as seasonal specials, referral discounts, and multinight discounts. Following events, Pitch It Glamping reaches out to clients for feedback, asking for recommendations for improvements or suggestions for additional services to offer. One service they’ll be introducing hopefully this fall is an indoor “tiny tent” glamping party package, specifically geared for children’s parties. (Please note: presently Pitch It Glamping holds a license to operate only in Washington State. Plans to add Oregon are slated for 2023.) An active participant in the community, Theresa’s making a name for her business and building a solid reputation through community outdoor events, selective local advertising, and “word of mouth” referrals. She takes time to volunteer with several

local organizations and participates with the local Business Commerce. She is always looking for opportunities to help the community, and she encourages local nonprofit groups and other organizations to contact Pitch It Glamping for their support. Pitch It Glamping has taken on a mission of demonstrating to their customers that getting outside yearround is “a great way to make memories and experience the Pacific Northwest.” Their “outdoorsy” culture embraces family, friends, fun, relaxation, and sustainability. With a goal “to be the premier mobile glamping service” of the area, I’d say they’re well on their way! A special “shout-out” to all Avid Outdoor Enthusiasts—now’s the time to plan ahead and schedule your Fall and Winter events. Mention this ad for a 30% discount. ALSO, be sure to check out Pitch It Glamping August 6th at the First Annual Paper Maker 4 Mile Obstacle Course Run, Lacamas Lake, 3344 NE Everett St. in Camas. As one of the featured vendors, Pitch It Glamping will have a full tent setup on display for viewing. Visit the Pitch It Glamping website, pitchitglamping.com, for all things “glamping,” the Frequently Asked Questions page, and Prices for an easy way to book your event! By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer t’s a good bet that Cannon Beach may be one of your favorite coastal destinations. After all, this charming beach community is a short scenic drive from the city, the perfect place to stroll the beach, shop, or enjoy an ice cream cone while people-watching on Main Street. FAMILY PROMISE OF CLARK COUNTY

Share the Promise By Olive Gallagher, Contributing Writer

hile the issue of homelessness in this country has been painfully challenging for many years, Family Promise of Clark County provides holistic care to a portion of the population known as the “hidden homeless” – families with children who are home-insecure or challenged with losing their current housing. Over 30 years ago, Karen Olson saw space in her church, so many home-insecure families with children in her community, and thought “how can we help?” She ended up creating the first interfaith hospitality network that partners with local faith communities to support families with children.

In the program, each church takes turns providing services for one week per quarter each year. Today, the national organization is based in New Jersey with over 200 Family Promise affiliates across forty-three states. Each affiliate is a 501-3C with a board of directors. Family Promise of Clark County was incorporated in 2016 and opened its doors in 2019. David Cole, their current Executive Director, joined them in June 2020. Operating with just four staff members and over 500 volunteers, Family Promise of Clark County works directly with families with 30 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

children to help them graduate into independent living. Struggling family members seeking assistance are too often separated when entering shelter programs, as men and boys are not allowed. What sets Family Promise of Clark County apart is their belief, as David Cole emphasized, “that families should be together during times of crisis.” Family Promise leverages facilities, as well as volunteers, to offer programs in their day center for essentials needed by families trying to get on their feet. Basic things we take for granted like a mailing address. Simple indeed, and yet you can’t get a job, go to school, or get car insurance without one. Each family is also provided with a caseworker and access to facilities including showers, a laundry room, and a kitchen to prepare meals. In addition, Family Promise of Clark County partners with multiple community partners to provide mental health care services, access to health care, job training, educational support, and any additional services needed to advance the family toward having their own home. The program has succeeded tremendously, graduating 85% of its families to safe, affordable, long-term housing. To date, 100% of those families have maintained that housing. In 2021, the organization expanded to offer diversion and prevention services. In some cases, Family Promise succeeds in helping families bypass the waiting list and receive the guidance needed, for example, by assisting folks with tenant/landlord mediation, thus eliminating their need to enter the program. These additional programs have resulted in more families being served in 2021 than during the past two years and are on pace to serve even more families in 2022. After receiving a grant in response to COVID-19 from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Family Promise opened a learning center with volunteer tutors that serves over 30 homeless students each year from school districts throughout Clark County. “The program,” Cole continued, “has been instrumental in improving academic performance in every child in the program.” To learn more, volunteer, or support Family Promise of Clark County, visit familypromiseofclarkco.org.

hen it comes to a seemingly simple product like a garage door, most of us don’t give it much thought until something goes wrong. When you’re unable to open the garage door and drive off to where you need to go; when you’ve returned home with a load of groceries in the car to a garage door that won’t open; or needing to escape the rain or snow. Suddenly you realize how essential and reassuring it is to have a company to call upon for assistance, even after hours, to get things running smoothly again and get you back on track. Ponderosa Garage Doors, servicing the Portland Metro area and all of Clark County, Washington, is just the company for whenever help is needed—whether with a full installation, replacement, or repair of anything from your garage door opener to the entire system. Ponderosa Garage Doors, a value-based, elite home-industry service company, will not only supply, replace, or repair all of your garage door needs, but they will do it with a staff of prompt, professional, and courteous office staff and technicians who know their products backwards and forwards. Ken Fielding founded Ponderosa Garage Door in 1995 when he moved his young family from Utah to the Pacific Northwest. Today, he operates the business he has built with his wife, Kris, and two of his five children, Teal and Brock, and other key team members. While Teal handles the technical aspects of installation and services in the field, Brock spends his time alongside Ken and Kris inside the offices managing

the “mechanics of running a business,” and functioning as the Financial and Marketing Manager. The Fielding family has striven over the years to build a good name, and goodwill and integrity are the core values that infuse every business decision they make. For them, creating long-standing relationships with their customers— many of whom live anywhere from Longview to Wilsonville and Hillsboro to Washougal—is at the heart of every decision that they make and everything they do. They instill these philosophies into their team members through weekly team trainings and meetings. As Brock stated, “My dad did the hard part before my brother and I came aboard in 2020. Today, in 2022, I like to think of us as a 27 year-old start-up! We never take for granted the clients that we currently have or the ones who will join us tomorrow.”
