History of Fencing THEThe DOCTOR Have you ever seen The Three Musketeers, The Mask of Zorro, or The Princess Bride? The three of these movies have one distinct feature in common: the sport called Fencing.

encing is a unique activity that is both sport and art form, much like dance. It developed out of swordsmanship training for military purposes in the mid-18th century and became a fashionable art for the aristocracy. It was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics, and is one of only five events that have been featured in every modern Olympic Games. Fencing is believed to have originated in Spain. Some of the most significant books on fencing were written by Spanish fencers, and in conquest Spanish forces carried fencing around the world. The mechanics of modern fencing developed in the 18th century in Italy, then were improved upon by the French school of fencing. The Spanish school of fencing had idled by then and was replaced by the Italian and French schools, but later rose to prominence again in the 19th century. These three schools remain the most influential around the world today. There are three forms of modern fencing: foil, the épée, and the sabre (also saber). Each form uses a different kind of weapon and has different rules, so the sport is divided into three different competitive scenes and most competitive fencers specialize in only one form.

The first official fencing competition was held in London in 1880, then in the summer of 1896 the foil and sabre events were included in the first Olympic Games, with épée being added in 1900. If you are interested in getting involved with fencing, or to find out more information about this one of a kind sport, visit Orion Fencing, located at 13504 NE 84th St. in Vancouver, or give them a call at 360-254-5999. Orion Fencing is a non-profit organization dedicated to the goal of bringing fencing to everyone in Southwest Washington. They strive to show that fencing is both accessible and enjoyable for all ages & abilities. They are open from 4pm – 9pm on weekdays, and 10am – 3pm on Saturdays. 
