Treat To Eat And A Treat To Keep! That’s how Carla Mayes, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Beaverton Town Square, so aptly describes her business. If you haven’t had a chance to visit her store yet, do yourself a favor and get there soon. I promise this is going to be your new favorite dessert place! Not only do they serve a plethora of different cake flavors and sizes, but they also have a fairly extensive collection of gift items and party supplies, which truly makes this a one-stop shopping mecca for all things party related. There’s quite a story behind this amazing business and their unbelievable cakes. In 1997 two women, Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz, came together over their mutual love of baking and started making delicious cakes for friends and family. Their desserts were so delectable and in such high demand, however, that it soon became evident they were onto something unique. Their product proved to be irresistible and now, 23 years later, they have over 300 store locations across the country! The great thing about Nothing Bundt Cakes, though, is that it doesn’t feel like a chain. Stepping into the store, you’d swear it was a simple mom and pop type of place (albeit one with the highest of standards and the most impeccable of tastes). The atmosphere is clean but cozy, colorful but elegant, and welcoming but professional. And the cakes! So many options, and each one is to die for. You get to choose from ten different delicious Bundt flavors, including their rotating seasonal Featured Flavors, like Blueberry Bliss for summertime, and Pumpkin Spice in the fall. All of their cakes are made with the

finest ingredients, like real butter and eggs, and crowned with their signature cream cheese frosting. None of the artificial stuff here! Having sampled many of their flavors, I can honestly attest that each one is simply amazing. Good news, too, for those with certain dietary restrictions like Celiac - they always carry one flavor that’s gluten free. It also happens to be so fantastic and moist that you’d never know it wasn’t one of their standard recipes. Additionally, all cakes can be ordered with extra frosting or no frosting, so there are also options for customers who are lactose-intolerant. Depending on your occasion, they have all kinds of different sizes and designs to choose from. You can go big with their 10” cake (which can also be tiered for extra grandiosity) or small with their individual Bundtinis (the size of a small cupcake) and anything in between. They can customize and personalize for any occasion; birthdays, showers, weddings, graduations - they do them all. There are more than sixty unique designs themed

around holidays and celebrations throughout the year, so the sky’s the limit! Carla would like all of their patrons to rest assured that she and her staff are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of their customers. lthough walking around outside with masks on is par for the course these days, Halloween will probably need to be celebrated differently this year. Restrictions on social gatherings are likely to remain in place for several more months, and with many people reluctant to venture out or greet others at their front door, it’s time to get creative with your plans for this spooky holiday. Here are some ideas for unique and interesting ways to make this Halloween one of the best ones ever, while still observing all recommended guidelines and keeping your family safe. PUMPKINS ARE A MUST

If your local pumpkin patch is open, go pick out your pumpkins for this year, or get them from the grocery store. Carve your pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns or paint them with some scary designs. Don’t forget to roast those yummy pumpkin seeds when you’re done!

DECORATE YOUR HOUSE & YARD Find as many orange and black decorations as you can, or make some yourself and go to town like it’s creepy Christmas! For extra points, create some ambiance with scary music or sound effects.

DRESS UP

You may not be going out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still wear a costume. If you’re the competitive type, set up a Zoom party with your friends and take a vote or have a judge decide which costume is the best.

SUGAR-FREE GUM • Sugary gum is one of the worst kinds of treats for your child’s teeth. Instead, choose a sugar-free gum that’s been approved by the Amerian Dental Association (ADA). Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal or Halloween treat stimulates saliva production, which can help prevent cavities when combined with twice-annual dental visits and daily brushing and flossing. UNSWEETENED APPLESAUCE • Though unsweetened applesauce still contains natural sugars, applesauce offers your child the healthful addition of dietary fiber. Alongside promoting healthy digestion, dietary fiber helps maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Experts recommend that children aged one to three get about 19 grams of fiber daily, while children aged four to eight should consume 25 grams daily. A one-cup serving of unsweetened applesauce provides approximately 3 grams of dietary fiber. CHOCOLATE • Of all the conventional sweets that may make it into your child’s Halloween bounty, chocolate is usually a better option. Though chocolate does contain sugar, it is also believed to be more easily cleared out of the mouth than other sweets. Chocolate has a melting point between 93 and 96.8 degrees. In a human mouth of 98.6 degrees, chocolate melts and can wash off the teeth more quickly than hard or sticky candies. The best choice is chocolate that doesn’t include sticky additions, like caramel or nougat. hired Gene as his sales manager, and in just over a decade they transformed it into not only one of the top dealerships in the city, but one of the top 20 in the nation! Their highly successful partnership proved to be the key in unlocking many doors on their path. So in 1989 when Kuni put the Carr dealership up for sale, Wally brought Gene in with him as an equal partner and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1999, they split the company into Chevrolet and Subaru, leaving Subaru at the old location and moving Chevrolet to a newer location west of Murray. The Carr dealerships are still family-run to this day. Gene sadly passed back in 2011 and Wally has since retired, although he remains on the board as an active member. Their shares of the company were split up into quarters and are now owned by their four sons (2 on Wally’s side and 2 on Gene’s). Wally’s son Brad Preble is a co-owner and the current president, and it’s obvious in talking to him how much he values the legacy and familial heritage of the company. Under his direction, they’ve truly mastered that “big but small” ideal - big in that they are one of the most successful dealerships in the Northwest Region (number 1, 2, or 3 every year in the region and number 1 every year in Oregon), but small in that their focus stays rooted

in their family values and sense of community. From their annual employee and family picnics (where the owners and managers all serve the other employees) all the way down to their daily lunches (where everyone from the top executives in the company to the newest hire sit in the same room and mingle), their open door policies and family atmosphere are consistently practiced. In fact, the wall in their waiting area is literally covered with awards, including Top 100 Places To Work In Oregon, year after year, amongst many others. Their commitment to care and service extends to the rest of the community as well. Not only do they give us the best customer service of any dealership around, but Carr Chevrolet also donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to various charities and organizations in the community, including Providence Child Center, Beaverton High School, and numerous others. These people work in our community. They live in our community. They love our community.
