A Vintage Mall

A

ttention all shoppers seeking items of whimsy; all collectors looking for things that are antique, unique, vintage, and fantastical - there’s a new mall on Main Street in downtown Tigard that is destined to become your favorite spot to spend an afternoon. Curious about the name? What a coincidence! It is, in fact, called Curiosities: A Vintage Mall.

It was just in 2019 that he moved the mall to the current location in Tigard, and Travis couldn’t be happier with the change. The new space is a big upgrade, giving them an extra 4,000 square feet of space, and they’ve also gained a dedicated parking lot. They’ve grown from featuring 20 vendors back in the earliest stages, to now hosting over 60 dealers (plus a huge waiting list of alternates looking to get in on the excitement when spaces become available).

Travis absolutely loves what he does and it shows. As he explains it, they have an eclectic mix of dealers and products with “as broad a range as the decades they serve.”

His vision was to provide a place where people can take a walk down memory lane, purchase nostalgic items they have a personal connection to, and present it all in a neat, clean, and bright environment.

Travis Diskin is the owner and founder of Curiosities. With a background in brand marketing, merchandising, and retail, he decided to quit a job in corporate America, and use his considerable accumulated knowledge to build something of his own; something that would incorporate both his expertise and his passion for vintage collectibles.

He rented a small space in a mall (similar to the one he now runs) where he began selling vintage comics, toys, and action figures. Things went so well and he enjoyed the work so much, that when that mall closed, he made the decision to start one of his own. In 2013, he did just that, opening a smaller version of the mall on TV Highway in Beaverton. Business boomed there, but space was very limited and the city ultimately sold the property that the building was on for new construction.

That’s exactly what he has accomplished. He keeps a tight rein on his dealers, but they appreciate the structure and the booming business they do reflects it. Especially during COVID, Travis has found that what he does is “less about retail, and more about recreation.” People need that little escape and why not do it in a clean, safe environment where they can find fun trinkets and collectibles?

Vintage items have the capacity to transport us to another time. An old record album, a classic movie poster, a toy that your grandparent played with growing up - these things put us in a different frame of mind.

For those who lived during that time, it’s a journey of nostalgia. For those younger folks who were not there, it’s a connection to the past; to previous generations and the zeitgeists that defined the era.

Either way, a day spent browsing a vintage mall is a day well spent, so come on in and support a fantastic local business. The selection is always changing, so visit regularly to make sure you don’t miss out on something awesome!
