I

f you’ve ever driven on Canyon Road, Tom’s Pancake House will certainly be a familiar name. Located right in the heart of Beaverton, if you’ve never eaten there, you’ve at least passed their sign. Perhaps you’ve even eyed it with a curious tilt of the head, your stomach grumbling in protest for not stopping. To be fair, from the street, Tom’s doesn’t necessarily demand your attention.

It has an old-timey, unassuming air about it that, if you weren’t aware of the reputation surrounding this Beaverton landmark, might make you assume the place’s best days were in the rearview window. I’m happy to say, however, that you would be wrong in that assessment - very wrong indeed!

his retirement was a voluntary decision, so he had plenty of time to find the right person to take over.

Greg had been in the restaurant industry his entire life but was looking for a place to call his own. When Tom met Greg, he knew he’d found his man. Warm and enthusiastic, intelligent and sincere; he was the perfect person to carry the torch Tom had lit. Greg’s brother, Paul, was also excited for the opportunity this presented, and stepped in as an investor to cement the deal. Greg moved his family up from Colorado, and has now called Beaverton home for 26 years.

Besides the legacy, what is it about Tom’s Pancake House that endears and endures? It’s simply timeless! The facade isn’t dated; it’s inviting, like a warm blanket. Greg knows not to fix what isn’t broken. He’s actually worked tirelessly to retain the spirit of Tom’s, while still updating things as necessary to maintain its viability. Crossing the threshold is crossing into a place where pretension, pomp and circumstance have no place. Tom’s is about delicious, hot comfort food, served with a smile. Period. It’s as simple, and complex, as that.

Established in 1966, Tom’s Pancake House is one of the oldest surviving restaurants in Beaverton. Brothers Greg and Paul White purchased the restaurant from the original owner, Tom Gutzler in 1995, and they still own and operate it to this day. Tom, apparently was quite a reverent man, salt of the earth, and not easily replaced. Over 30 years, he had built a solid reputation, strong ties with the community, and a legacy that commanded the highest respect. Fortunately, 4 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Everything is made from scratch daily. Fresh-squeezed orange juice is actually freshly squeezed; not purchased in cartons labeled “fresh-squeezed”. They buy real oranges, then cut and juice them daily on site. All you ham lovers out there: Tom’s only serves genuine Honey Baked Ham with all of their meals! Incidentally, Paul also happens to own Honey Baked Ham, so understanding good food obviously comes naturally to the White brothers!

Compotes are made fresh daily. Seasonal dishes are offered because Tom’s makes the most of fresh ingredients as they are available. They don’t cut corners and they don’t serve food out of cans or plastic packaging.

It’s a difficult task deciphering what makes their food so special, but it really just comes down to integrity.

Comfort food, by its very nature, lacks affectation.

You don’t walk into Tom’s expecting to order a $30 plate consisting of 3 artfully-seared brussel sprouts drizzled with Lemon Caper Butter Sauce. You go there for an $8 heaping plate of delicious, fluffy, freshly-made buttermilk cakes hot off the griddle. That’s not to say that Greg doesn’t update their menu with contemporary dishes. The menu is a dynamic thing, always changing with the public’s tastes, but at its core, the Tom’s menu honors the traditions that started it all, and relies on consistency.

Some local favorites are their Bacon & Cheese Omelette, Santa Fe Omelette, German Pancakes, Chocolate Chip Pancakes (with rich, decadent, 60% cacao chips), Raspberry Crepes, Monte Cristo Sandwich, Reuben (made with perfectlytrimmed corn beef and dry sauerkraut so as not to soggy-up the bread), Beef Stroganoff, and their amazing Cobb Salad.

Everything is fantastic, though, so there are no bad choices.

They have a vast menu catering to any and all tastes (and dietary restrictions). Our very own publisher Matt Nelson swears by their hot chocolate - says it takes him right back to his childhood, the best he’s had in years! Whether you’re coming for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Greg takes such great care with every last detail of every meal, you’re sure to be happy with anything you order.

Locally owned and operated for over 50 years, Tom’s Pancake House is a community favorite.

It’s the best family restaurant in the area; a place for friends, church groups, and civil groups to congregate. You can always count on Tom’s. Incidentally, Tom still lives in the area and still frequents the restaurant!

He and Greg are close friends and Tom couldn’t be happier that his legacy has been placed in such capable hands. Come on in and say hello to both of them today!

Jenny and Elia also started working in an administrative capacity running the office so that Juan and Martin could stay in the field.
