ho doesn’t enjoy a visit to the farmer’s market? Strolling between the booths on a beautiful Oregon summer morning, talking to local farmers and picking out fresh produce and other goodies to take home for dinner - it’s the makings of a perfect day! The downside is that everyone loves going, and our local farmer’s markets are often overrun. You can’t find parking, have to watch where you walk to avoid being trampled, and the best products are quickly sold out. Plus the markets are open for just a few hours once a week, and last only while the weather is decent. But what if I told you there was a place where you could get the same locally-grown fresh produce, along with friendly service, reasonable prices, and it was open year-round? Well, it’s your lucky day! Welcome to 185th Produce, conveniently located at the corner of 185th and TV Highway in Aloha.

gentleman who sincerely loves his role in supporting the community. He came to this business during the recession in 2008 when, like so many of us, he ended up unemployed and looking to reinvent himself. He opened his first produce stand in 2009 and found his new path! The 185th location has been open for nearly 5 years, and what a terrific location it is! Huge bins overflowing with colorful fruits and vegetables are immediately visible as you drive in, and what you see out front is just the tip of the iceberg. Inside is a veritable cornucopia of fresh produce, dairy, drinks, honey, and CBD products of all sorts! Their biggest sellers are their fantastic apple and pear varieties, all locally sourced from Yakima Valley, Hood River and Heritage Farms. They typically have 14-15 different kinds of apples to choose from. One variety that’s very difficult to find anywhere else (and should definitely be sampled) is the Cosmic Crisp. It’s a new hybrid developed at the University of Washington just 2 years ago, and can be compared to a Honey Crisp, except it’s far more durable. New, local, and delicious! They have a full range of other fruits and vegetables, providing most anything and everything you could possibly want or need.

It’s the best place to go for hard-to-find unique seasonal produce that may not be carried at general supermarkets. They also offer 23 taps of locally-sourced beverages, including beer, mead, cider, kombucha, and CBD soda. ttention all shoppers seeking items of whimsy; all collectors looking for things that are antique, unique, vintage, and fantastical - there’s a new mall on Main Street in downtown Tigard that is destined to become your favorite spot to spend an afternoon. Curious about the name? What a coincidence! It is, in fact, called Curiosities: A Vintage Mall.

It was just in 2019 that he moved the mall to the current location in Tigard, and Travis couldn’t be happier with the change. The new space is a big upgrade, giving them an extra 4,000 square feet of space, and they’ve also gained a dedicated parking lot. They’ve grown from featuring 20 vendors back in the earliest stages, to now hosting over 60 dealers (plus a huge waiting list of alternates looking to get in on the excitement when spaces become available). Travis absolutely loves what he does and it shows. As he explains it, they have an eclectic mix of dealers and products with “as broad a range as the decades they serve.” His vision was to provide a place where people can take a walk down memory lane, purchase nostalgic items they have a personal connection to, and present it all in a neat, clean, and bright environment.

Travis Diskin is the owner and founder of Curiosities. With a background in brand marketing, merchandising, and retail, he decided to quit a job in corporate America, and use his considerable accumulated knowledge to build something of his own; something that would incorporate both his expertise and his passion for vintage collectibles. He rented a small space in a mall (similar to the one he now runs) where he began selling vintage comics, toys, and action figures. Things went so well and he enjoyed the work so much, that when that mall closed, he made the decision to start one of his own. In 2013, he did just that, opening a smaller version of the mall on TV Highway in Beaverton. Business boomed there, but space was very limited and the city ultimately sold the property that the building was on for new construction.

That’s exactly what he has accomplished. He keeps a tight rein on his dealers, but they appreciate the structure and the booming business they do reflects it. Especially during COVID, Travis has found that what he does is “less about retail, and more about recreation.” People need that little escape and why not do it in a clean, safe environment where they can find fun trinkets and collectibles? Vintage items have the capacity to transport us to another time. An old record album, a classic movie poster, a toy that your grandparent played with growing up - these things put us in a different frame of mind. For those who lived during that time, it’s a journey of nostalgia. For those younger folks who were not there, it’s a connection to the past; to previous generations and the zeitgeists that defined the era. Either way, a day spent browsing a vintage mall is a day well spent, so come on in and support a fantastic local business. Refreshing Summer Drinks Hot summer weather means we need to stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water, of course, but when you want something more flavorful, try out some of these ideas to keep things interesting.

WATERMELON LEMONADE:

CUCUMBER MINT GLOW WATER

DOLE WHIP LEMONADE

Combine half watermelon juice and half lemonade. To make it even more fun, freeze watermelon chunks ahead of time to use in place of ice cubes. They won’t water down your drink, and you have a snack once they thaw!

In a pitcher, mix 3 cans of seltzer with slices of cucumber and lemon, then add 3 sprigs of mint. Stir/muddle to release more flavor. So refreshing!

In a blender combine 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup lemonade, and 1/2 cup coconut milk. Blend until smooth, then pour and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings
