“Pizza! Pizza!” the insight of how much Little Caesars Pizza gives back to our local community

L

ittle Caesars Pizza isn’t just a convenient place to pick up a quick and easy dinner, but a place that gives back to their community 365 days a year.

Little Caesars was founded in 1959 by Mike Ilitch and Marian Bayoff as a single, family-owned restaurant in Detroit, Michigan, where the headquarters remain today. According to the various local franchise owners of Washington county, “Little Caesars is the largest carryoutonly pizza chain in the United States and the third largest pizza chain in the world, with stores in each of the 50 states and 24 countries and territories around the world.” 10 • BEAVERTON COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

Locally, the Washington county franchise includes 5 different Little Caesars locations and employs over 100 people. On the local level, the giving happens on a daily basis. If a Hot- N- Ready pizza is not sold in 30 minutes, the staff members put it back into the walk-in so that it can be donated at the end of the day to local shelters and churches providing for those in need. They also work with and donate to local schools and libraries for all sorts of sporting and educational events. On a larger scale, Little Caesars operates a program called the Love Kitchen, which is a whole Little Caesars store on wheels. When a disaster strikes, the Love Kitchen will be there to help, doling out food to those in need. The Love Kitchen has two trucks in operation working 365 days a year traveling all over the United States. These restaurants on wheels have served more than three million people. “The Love Kitchen has been recognized for its charitable efforts as well, receiving The President’s Volunteer Action Award Citation from former Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The Reagan administration also awarded the Love Kitchen a Presidential Citation for Private Sector Initiatives. The Love Kitchen’s 30th anniversary was recognized when it was listed in the Congressional Record by U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller, on April 30, 2015.” The Love Truck has rolled into Portland twice so far,

and the owners and their team were able to serve over 1,100 pizzas to people that were in need. Little Caesars franchise owners donate the resources necessary to make each Love Kitchen serving a success. An estimated 50,000 franchisees, their employees, and corporate colleagues have volunteered over the years to support the program when the need arises in their local communities. Owning a Little Caesars franchise, like any other business venture, has it’s ups and downs, but it’s important to keep things in perspective. Becoming a franchisee, according

to one of the local Beaverton owners, “paves the way for people to be able to own and achieve their dreams without having to make mistakes of new business owners... Everything is laid out for you, and if you follow the guidelines, success is most likely certain.” This supportive business model allows enough security that it becomes easy to put aside the cost-profit mindset and focus on the things that really matter. At the end of the day, the Little Caesars family understands that positive change starts in your own backyard (or at least in your local community)!

TIPS TO CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN By Courtney Smith elieve it or not, everyone can be an artist when it comes to pumpkin carving, but it is harder than it looks. Theses 11 tips will have your gourds looking and smelling good the entire trick-or-treating season.

B

4. Scoop out all the pulp (and then some).

1. Start with the right pumpkin.

5. Sketch out your design on paper first.

Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve.

You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine. Thin the inner wall of the “face” area to 1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.

2. Cut from the bottom, not the top.

Draw your art to size then tape it to the front of your pumpkin and use a fork or pencil to poke holes along the lines you want to carve.

3. If you do carve from the top, cut out the lid on an angle.

It’s easier to create features when the face is gazing up at you. It is suggested to use a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife for carving.

Cutting your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.

This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it, like it would with a straight upand-down cut. A boning knife should work well for this.

6. Try holding the pumpkin in your lap.

7. Start by making simple rough cuts.

If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later.

8. Use your scraps creatively.

Make a tongue, pipe, or hair accessories out of a discarded piece of pumpkin shell, for example.

9. Keep your pumpkin fresh.

Spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, you can revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.

10. Create a chimney.

First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns. Then make a small hole where the lid has blackened. Or, save yourself the stress and go with battery-operated votive instead.

11. Sprinkle cinnamon inside the lid. That way, when you light the candle, your jacko’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. Yum.

Chelsea Hicks Foundation

Y

oung Danielle suffered with nausea, fever, and exhaustion due to LCH cancer. One thing, though, would always brighten her day: A costume from Chelsea’s Closet. Putting on a pair of wings, a princess dress, or a mermaid costume was some of the best medicine she could receive. “When you’re going through all this, you have no control over anything… so for Danielle to get to be somebody else helped her feel safe and comfortable and calm. Like she can get through it all,” says Shannon Baimbridge, Danielle’s mother. The unimaginable worry that comes with a child who is seriously ill, spending numerous hours in the hospital, is a reality for many parents. Chelsea’s Closet is not only a bright spot during this stressful time – it is a therapeutic, joyful activity, which helps heal both child and parent during the most difficult times. Watching their bright red mobile costume closet wheel down the hospital hall is energizing for patients, family, and staff alike… knowing that the dreary hospital stay is about to change. Chelsea’s Closet works to transform lives of children and families facing serious illness by including therapeutic dress-up and play with their hospital experience.

The Tigard-based not-for-profit organization offers hospitalized children and their siblings the chance to select a costume and accessories from its mobile costume closet. The program supports treatment and recovery by providing therapeutic play to more than 2,400 seriously ill children annually in local hospitals, serving all 36 counties in Oregon as well as Southwest Washington. “Because of my daughter’s illness, I know first-hand the horrors of watching a child go through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery only to see it dampen their spirits and change their body,” says Alison Hicks, Chelsea’s Closet Co-Founder and CEO. “Remembering that they are children before they are patients, Chelsea’s Closet empowers them to be anything they want to be transforming them with costumes, play, and imagination into the Superhero or Princess to combat their disease.” These children are fighters, but chemo and hospital stays can bring even the toughest kid down. But as Shannon puts it, “It took Danielle away from the reality of getting chemo pumped into her… It took her to a new place where she could be safe. It’s not just a costume, it’s life-changing.”

Travel Perspectives

Tryin’ to Reason with Hurricane Season is scheduled is not likely. Of course, if it is impacting your vacation….it is a major storm!

Cruise Line Responses The great thing about a ship is that it can sail much faster than a hurricane and the Caribbean is a big sea. A storm that is impacting the Bahamas will have no impact on Grand Cayman or Cozumel. The normal response of the cruise line is to change the itinerary to avoid a storm.

Passenger Preparations

Most people don’t like to be put in situations that they don’t have much control over. Having a hurricane impacting your travel is one of those situations where you don’t have control. The cruise lines and the airlines are trying to balance the needs of all their passengers and are often scrambling to do their best in an ever-changing situation. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to put yourself in the best possible position. s a travel specialist with over 40 cruises under my belt, one question comes up just about every fall, “Should I book a cruise duing hurricane season?” With compliments to Jimmy Buffett, should any of us try to reason with hurricane season? I know, rational thinking sounds like the correct approach, but if I am thinking about my family having to deal with a hurricane, emotional reactions and avoiding epic natural disasters are the order of the day! As with many things in life that are scary, the more you know about hurricanes, the more you can make informed travel decisions and keep anxiety levels at manageable levels.

A

When is Hurricane Season? Since most people are thinking about storms that impact the United States, I will focus on hurricanes that form in the Atlantic and impact the United States. Yes, we do have some storms in the Pacific that impact Mexico but these storms don’t tend to have the same impact as Atlantic storms. The Atlantic season is roughly from June 1st to November 30th. Yes, you can have storms early and late in the season but the distribution of storms is concentrated in the months of August, September and October. The National Hurricane Center has some great tools for educating yourself on hurricanes. They breakdown all kinds of storms including Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms, Minor Hurricanes and Major Hurricanes. When you start talking about storms that actually hit the United States, the odds of a hurricane occurring on the week your cruise

• Decide how much risk you can tolerate. If you are a person that has no interest in even thinking about dealing with a storm, pick itineraries that are outside the hurricane season. • Work with a travel professional. Wouldn’t it be great to have one person that you can count on to help you navigate flight changes, or hotel needs or discussions with the cruise lines. A travel professional can be making arrangements for you when you can’t make them for yourself. • Purchase Travel Protection and know what your plan covers. This is a must. Most people only think about Travel Protection being important if they have to cancel a trip for illness or a death in the family. Most good policies will also cover trip interruption or trip delays. Discuss these benefits with your travel professional. • Consider “Cancel For Any Reason” Travel Protection. Classic Travel Protection has very specific language about what the policy will and will not cover. With Cancel For Any Reason Coverage, you can decide this is not a trip for you and you will have coverage. Work with your Travel Professional to understand what the limits of your coverage is.

Expect the Unexpected I tell all my clients that the first thing they should pack for their trip is a good amount of patience. Life happens and every good plan tends to run into trouble now and then. Work with a professional, know your own risk tolerance, purchase travel protection just in case and odds are, you will make a life time of memories.

WE’RE YOUR VACATION SPECIALIST

Yes, your dream vacation starts here! With so many travel options, it can be overwhelming. I find amazing experiences that exceed your desires, not your budget. Let’s get started!
